Most of my Chinese friends in the Philippines trace their ancestry to Fujian, specifically the southern part of the province. Interestingly, forebears of a good number of them come from the island(s) of Quemoy (presently transcribed as Kinmen), which is administered by ROC. I am told that some of them carry 3 passports: Philippine, PRC and ROC.

History / Mary Leakey
February 06, 2013, 11:38:57 AM

Mary Leakey (6 February 1913 â€" 9 December 1996) was a British archaeologist and anthropologist, who discovered the first fossilized Proconsul skull, an extinct ape now believed to be ancestral to humans, and also discovered the robust Zinjanthropus skull at Olduvai Gorge. For much of her career she worked together with her husband, Louis Leakey, in Olduvai Gorge, uncovering the tools and fossils of ancient hominines. She developed a system for classifying the stone tools found at Olduvai. She also discovered the Laetoli footprints. In 1960 she became director of excavation at Olduvai and subsequently took it over, building her own staff. After the death of her husband she became a leading palaeoanthropologist, helping to establish the Leakey tradition by training her son, Richard, in the field. --Wiki

Stop making fun of Vice President Jejomar Binay’s skin color.

This is the appeal of the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA), as it takes offense against administration coalition Team PNoy’s statement about color branding.

“When you say black, are you referring to the Vice President’s skin color?” UNA secretary-general Toby Tiangco said after Liberal Party (LP) said 2013 polls will be between “black and white.”

In a statement, Tiangco said LP acting president Joseph Emilio Abaya’s declaration may be seen as a subtle reference to the Vice President’s dark complexion.

“It’s okay for us because we don’t have fair skin colors if they are now basing it on the color of the skin because the Vice President is dark that’s why it’s a battle between black and white,” Tiangco said.

“But we again appeal to the leadership of LP to go beyond the innuendoes about skin color and to stop pitting the Vice President against the President,” he said.

But Tiangco, also a campaign manager for UNA, said the administration party should decide whether it wants to refer to its coalition as the “white” party or the “yellow” party.

“The Liberal Party is apparently confused as to its color branding simply because of the confusing multi-color mix of senatorial bets in the LP coalition ticket,” he said.

Binay is one of the leaders of UNA after forming agreeing his party Partido Demokratiko Pilipino (PDP)-Laban to coalesce with former President Joseph “Erap” Estrada’s Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino.

UNA is the only coalition who managed to field in a complete ticket that will clash against President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III’s bets for the senatorial elections this coming May.

RENO, Nev. (AP) â€" Stewie the Cat, the longest domestic cat in the world at more than 4 feet long from nose to tail, has died.

Stewie was surrounded by family when he succumbed to a yearlong battle with cancer Monday evening at his Reno home, owner Robin Hendrickson said Tuesday. He was 8.

Guinness World Records declared Stewie the record-holder in August 2010, measuring 48.5 inches from the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail.

Hundreds of fans flooded Stewie's Facebook site with memories and condolences Tuesday. The Maine Coon cat was a certified therapy animal that frequently visited a Reno senior center and helped promote animal welfare awareness with the Nevada Humane Society.

"Stewie was always very social and loved meeting new people," Hendrickson said. "He has touched many lives, and for that I am grateful."

Stewie's full name was Mymains Stewart Gilligan. Hendrickson bought him from a breeder in Hermiston, Oregon, in 2005. Last month, he attended the International Cat Show in Portland, Oregon.

"He did really well at the show, even though he wasn't feeling totally perfect," said Stewie's breeder, Valerie Horton, who also serves as the show's entry clerk. "He loved being there because he loved the public. He always did."

Horton said Maine Coons are the largest domestic breed of cats. She's been raising them since 1980.

"It's the luck of the draw," Horton said. "We mostly breed for type and temperament, and then hope for the size. Stewie's father came from some very large cats."

Guinness World Records officials did not immediately respond to inquiries about a successor to Stewie's record. The previous record-holder, Leo, a 48-inch-long Maine Coon owned by Frieda Ireland of Chicago, died several years ago.

Stewie was diagnosed in early 2012 with Lymphosarcoma, a malignant disease of the lymphoid tissues. He responded successfully to chemotherapy and was declared cancer-free, but the remission period was brief, and a vet recently found another, more aggressive tumor on his kidneys, Hendrickson said.

"I knew that although we could fight it, the end was near and so I wanted to simply make him comfortable and let him enjoy the time he did have," she said.

Why couples record sex videos
ABS-CBNnews.com

MANILA, Philippines â€" Contrary to what most people think, the act of recording sex videos is not a sign of mental illness, according to a relationship expert.

In an interview on the ABS-CBN morning show “Umagang Kay Ganda” on Wednesday, Dr. Margie Holmes said recording a sex video is a decision and can be controlled.

“I think kailangan i-klaro natin na ‘di ito sakit. Maraming nagsasabi na sakit ito pero hindi, kasi you can help it. Kasi ‘pag sakit ito, hindi mo mapigil ang sarili mo eh, gagawin mo nang gagawin,” Holmes explained.

She said, however, that this does not make the act less harmful.

“Hindi ito sakit pero napakasama,” she said, adding, “Hindi mo iniisip ang mangyayari sa babaeng nilalagay mo sa video. Hindi mo iniisip ‘yung magulang niya, magulang mo, sarili mo lang lagi.”

So why do couples record their sexual acts?

According to Holmes, it is usually the men who bring this up. She said they tend to do it as they look for a “remembrance” of their intimate moments, to feel that they are “macho”, or out of curiosity.

“Kadalasan ang lalaki ang humihiling. Siguro they feel they have nothing to lose,” Holmes said as their partners, more often than not, end up getting pregnant and humiliated after the video is leaked online.

Girls, on the other hand, are often carried away by their emotions and “love” for their partners.

“Ang mga babae, bakit sila pumapayag? Una, in love sila eh. ‘Yun ‘yun eh. At hindi ko ine-encourage ito, kasi kahit in love ka, nag-iisip ka pa rin,” Holmes said. “At saka ‘yung idea noon na ‘kung mahal mo ako, gagawin mo ito, magse-sex tayo o ise-sex video mo ako.”

Holmes advised couples to get to know each other first and be careful not to get carried away by their emotions as they may regret their actions later.

“Protektahan ang sarili,” she said. “Sa babae ‘yun at sa lalaki.”

Last week, the chief of the Public Attorney’s Office gave the same advice to couples following the arrest of a Manila City Hall employee who was accused of uploading a photo of himself and his former girlfriend having sex.

“Kaya ang aming advice, huwag na ninyong i-document ‘yan. Kumuha na lang kayo ng picture na may damit kaysa naman ‘yung private affair. Sa inyo na lang ‘yun, huwag na ninyong i-document,” PAO chief Atty. Persida Rueda-Acosta said.

Those who document their sexual activities and make them public may face imprisonment and a fine for violating Republic Act 9995 or the Anti-Voyeurism Law.

A number of celebrities have become victims of sex video scandals leaked on the Internet, including Janelle Manahan, Katrina Halili and Hayden Kho. -- Posted at 01/16/2013 4:55 PM

In the winter of 1647-48, an Iroquois village in the wilds along the Mohawk River, west of what is now Albany, N.Y., was the setting for one of the most remarkable events of the period. In a clearing amidst the snowy forest, a ragtag posse of Dutch colonists dragged the fugitive Harmen Meyndertsz van den Bogaert from a burning longhouse. The Indians could have only watched in despair as van den Bogaert battled with his captors while their precious supplies went up in flames, the smoke reeking of burnt meat, singed wampum shells, and scorched peltries.

Van den Bogaert’s tale continued beyond the burning barn, and by the time it was over, the New Netherland court at Manhattan Island referred to his demise as “sad and miserable.” How van den Bogaert, who’d risen early in life to become a respected surgeon, commissary of stores for Fort Orange, groundbreaking explorer of the Iroquois hinterlands, and married father of four, came to such an ignominious downfall involved, to one degree or another, sodomy, slavery, jail breaks, exorcism ceremonies, cannibalism, barroom brawls, a Jesuit martyr, privateering, a long-anonymous chronicle of the wilderness frontier, and one pet bear not for sale at any price. All in all, the surgeon’s life remains a strange and illuminating early colonial case study.

In 1647, when Manhattan was a Dutch colony called New Amsterdam, a married barber-surgeon, commissary of stores, and respected explorer named Harmen Meyndertsz van den Bogaert was caught in flagrante with another manâ€"a black slave. Sodomy was a capital offense according the strict Calvinist faith practiced by the Dutch at the time. Pursued by the authorities, Van den Bogaert broke out of custody in Fort Orange and fled with his lover to an Iroquois village, but was tracked down. In the ensuing struggle to capture him, a shoot-out occurred and a longhouse was set on fire. He was literally dragged away by the posse and returned to Fort Orange. He got out a second time, but drowned in the second escape attempt, possibly making him the first victim of homophobia in North America. -- http://listverse.com/

MANILA -- Senator Ramon "Bong" Revilla Jr. thinks that it's "too early" to decide whether or not he will run for president in the 2016 national elections.

Analysts say that the next presidential race will be a three-corner fight between Revilla, Vice President Jejomar Binay and Interior and Local Government Secretary Manuel Roxas II.

"It's an honor to be fielded against Vice President Binay and Secretary Mar Roxas but it's too early to call…I do believe in destiny. Kung dadating iyan, dadating iyan pero kailangang paghandaan," Revilla said during the press conference of Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats Tuesday.

Revilla was promoted as chairman of the political party, while Leyte Representative Ferdinand Martin Romualdez took the senator's post as party president.

Last week, House Minority Leader Danilo Suarez said Revilla could likely be the presidential candidate of Lakas-CMD in 2016.

"'Pag nagdesisyon ako, ibig sabihin, handa ako," Revilla said.

But the senator said he would prefer focusing on the upcoming local elections in May, where some of his relatives are running, before he prepares for the 2016 presidential elections.

"One election at a time. Local muna tayo. Malayo pa yan," he told reporters.

Revilla's term as senator will end in 2016. In 2004, he ran and won the second highest number of votes. In 2010, he gathered the highest votes from the electorate.

He served as vice governor and governor of the province of Cavite before he occupied a national post. (Kathrina Alarez/Sunnex) -- http://www.sunstar.com.ph/

February 05, 2013, 04:01:57 PM

Mount Erebus is Antarctica’s second largest volcano and has been observed to be continually active since 1972. Atop the mountain are a number of ice towers formed as a result of steam emissions from volcanic activity. Many of the ice towers constantly emit steam giving them the appearance of chimneys jutting out of the icy volcano’s frozen sides. In addition to these chimney-like pillars the volcanic mountain is home to a variety of ice caves, formed naturally in a number of ways, all resulting in glowing blue, eerily cavernous subterranean chambers. -- http://listverse.com/

It was then, however, that Lorsoungnern began to utter sounds and attempt to sit up. The escorts rushed into the morgue, one of them rolling her over and pushing down on her back in an effort to help her bleed out quicker. Another attempted to strangle her, but was stopped. She laid there gasping for breath as one of the men who had a part in her crime was executed and died instantly. Still, after this time, she continued to breathe and was ordered to be tied back on to the cross. The escorts became covered in her blood as they tried to hoist her back into position. Finally, fifteen more bullets were put into her body and she was mercifully pronounced dead. The reasons for her unenviable death are as follows: she was not tied tightly enough to the cross, and could therefore wriggle out of position, and her heart happened to be on the right side of her body instead of the left. -- http://listverse.com/

Shortly after the shots were fired, a doctor approached the woman and checked for vital signs, none of which were found. Lorsoungnern was, by this point, bleeding profusely as they untied her body and laid her face down on the floor where she jerked and twitched slightly. Her chest had burst open from the bullets. Her body was moved to the morgue and placed upon a bed as they readied the next person for execution.

On the day of her death, January 13th, 1979, Lorsoungnern succumbed to repeated fainting spells, and had trouble standing under her own power. The escorts had to keep reviving her with smelling salts as they approached the execution room while she continued to maintain her innocence in the boy’s murder. “I didn’t do it, I didn’t kill the boy,” she begged. “Please don’t kill me, I didn’t kill him.” Her desperate words fell upon deaf ears as the escorts finally managed to lead the woman to the cross and began to secure her to it. At last, the gun was loaded and the executioner took aim. A moment later ten bullets were consecutively fired into the screen.

Weird and Extreme / Re: Ginggaew Lorsoungnern
February 05, 2013, 03:49:01 PM
For her role in the boy’s murder, Lorsoungnern was sentenced to death by shooting, an execution in which the condemned was tied to a wooden cross, with their hands bound in a praying position and their bodies facing a wall. Behind them, a screen was set up in which a target was drawn, indicating where the heart was. The executioner remained behind this screen, unable to see the prisoner’s body, and operated a mounted automatic rifle which would deliver fifteen or so bullets to the vicinity of the heart. The sheer amount of bullets striking such a vital region would typically ensure that death came instantly, provided the target did not struggle too much.

Weird and Extreme / Ginggaew Lorsoungnern
February 05, 2013, 03:48:31 PM

A mouthful, and certainly difficult to type, Ginggaew Lorsoungnern was a former domestic for a Bangkok family. Using her familiarity and the trust established with the family that once employed her, she picked up their six year old boy from school and personally delivered him to a Thai kidnap gang, who then demanded a ransom from the child’s parents. The parents complied, following the plan to hurl the money out of a moving train and close to a designated flag. Unfortunately, because the delivery occurred at night, the parents were unable to properly see the flag and missed the exact spot. Assuming the ransom was denied, the infuriated kidnappers proceeded to stab the young boy to death, at which point it’s alleged that Lorsoungnern flung her body over the boy’s and attempted to shield him. This act, assuming it happened at all, failed to save the boy who was then dumped into a grave. Another sad discovery came later, when the coroner found soil in the child’s lungs, indicating that he was still alive at the time of his burial.

I know that it was painful especially to the female student from USJR, but the damage has already been done and all we can do is to help her to recover from the traumatic parts of her life destroyed by a certain uploader with unknown specific reasons as of this moment. To the cybercitizens who wants to watch the video more (or those who wants to watch the video for the first time), I am asking you to stop from watching the viral video that tarnished a person because for every watching a scandalous video, it is like that you tarnish his/her dignity in an indirect manner.

Agoi, mosamot ka-curious ang cybercitizens ani... :P

7. Give thoughtful gifts. Most people stick to the same general gift themes on Valentine’s Day: flowers, chocolates, cards, maybe a piece of jewelry. Can you think of something different that might mean a whole lot more â€" and maybe even cost a whole lot less? This past "10 Tips" column about how to avoid overspending during the holiday season includes a tip about making your own gifts. Such gifts could include cakes, cookies or gift certificates for your services. The gift certificate idea might be just the ticket for you if you’re short on cash but high on love this Valentine’s Day. You could offer to run errands for your loved one, make a nice dinner, clean the house, repair the car or give a massage.

Good idea. Wa juy mobalibad og masahe... 8)

Bullied Boy Kills Tormentor with One Punch â€" QCPD
Manila Bulletin â€" 13 hours ago

QUEZON CITY, Philippines - A 13-year-old boy was picked up by village watchmen here on Sunday after he allegedly killed with one punch an older boy who had been bullying him, police said yesterday.

Inspector Elmer Monsalve, chief of the homicide investigation section of the Quezon City Police District (QCPD), said "Arnie" (not his real name) was questioned over the death of 14-year-old David hours after the two of them figured in a fight.

Investigators learned from witnesses that Arnie was being picked on by the older boy until he got fed up and struck back by delivering a strong blow on David's back.

The fight between the two out-of-school youth broke out around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday at a compound on Visayas Avenue-Extension in Barangay Pasong Tamo, Q.C., said Monsalve.

Later that afternoon, David started vomiting at home prompting his parents to take him to the Bernardino General Hospital. It was there where David died.

In the evening, barangay public safety officers (BPSOs) took Arnie to police stationed at Camp Karingal to give his statement to probers.

On Monday, it was learned that Arnie had been turned over to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) on account of his being a minor.
