Oral Sex Can Transmit HIV! - Through tonsils
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor

Oral sex is regarded as safe, both against unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases; moreover the unbearable condom is no longer necessary. But after researchers have recently discovered that the human papillomavirus (HPV), a germ that causes cervical (uterine) and throat cancer, can be transmitted through oral cancer, the real bomb has come right now: HIV, the dreadful plague of the 21st century, can use the same entrance to the human
body.

The deadly virus can be transmitted through the tonsils. The discovery could also have an impact on preventing HIV from being transmitted from infected mothers to their children through breastfeeding.

A team led by Niki Moutsopoulos at the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research in Bethesda, Maryland, US, investigated gum tissues taken from eight patients.

By employing specially designed antibody molecules, the team identified the level of several proteins within these mouth tissues. About 12% of the tonsil cells were positive for the protein CD4, located on the surface of immune cells that are particularly vulnerable to HIV infection, while less than 4% of the gum cells displayed this protein.

Genetic analysis showed that the CXCR4 gene, encoding a protein that determines vulnerability to HIV in immune cells, was 11 times more active in the tonsils than in the gum samples. Tonsils were much more susceptible to HIV infection than other mouth areas, like the cheek lining and mouth floor.

"The new findings provide biological data to complement clinical and epidemiological evidence suggesting that HIV can â€" in exceptional cases â€" spread through oral sex. It's a further piece of the jigsaw puzzle," John Greenspan, director of the AIDS Research Institute at the University of California in San Francisco, US told New Scientist.

HIV transmission by oral sex seems to be less likely than in the case of vaginal sex. Experts give a chance of 1 infection for 2,500 oral sex exposures, while 1 out of 200-1000 vaginal sex contacts can result in infection.

Still, researchers point to the use of condoms for safe oral sex and a tonsillectomy (tonsils removal) would significantly minimize the risk.

"I think that would be a stretch. We can't go taking out every tissue that HIV could pass through. If future studies bear out a link between tonsils and HIV transmission, there could be implications for blocking the spread of the virus from mother to child in parts of the world where infant formula and antiretroviral drugs are in short supply. "said Moutsopoulos.

"Some scientists have started investigating whether probiotic treatments â€" which promote the growth of healthful bacteria â€" might reduce the transmission of HIV to very young children through the oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract." said Greenspan.

"The tonsils â€" which were removed routinely up until the late twentieth century â€" are now seen as a first line of defense in the immune system, alerting the body to potentially dangerous foreign particles," warns Mousopolous.

CRAWFISH (Takla)

Crawfish (Procambarus clarkii), also called crayfish, crawdads, and mud bugs, are freshwater crustaceans found on every continent except for Africa. In appearance they greatly resemble the lobster, but are much smaller. Crawfish range in size between 3 to 10 inches depending on the species and the location. They grow throughout a series of molts by which they shed their exoskeleton and produce a new one. A crawfish nearly doubles its size with each molt.

Crawfish are an excellent source of protein, and the fat content of washed tailmeat is low, only about 1 percent.

Why Do We Feel Guilty? - To promote prosocial behaviors...
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

"So I'm never gonna dance again/Guilty feet have got no rhythm". Researchers say guilt is crucial in regulating social behavior (but when it comes to George Michael, we cannot see how…). The feeling of worry leads the way to redemption.

Psychologists still consider that the role of this complex emotion is debatable. This auto-punitive feeling could prevent you from repeating the same transgressive behavior, the "withdrawal motivation." Some say that guilt makes people behave in line with the moral
standards of their community, the "approach motivation."

A new research made by New York University psychologists tried to combine the two hypotheses. Guilt could be initially linked with withdrawal motivation, which then turns into approach-motivated behavior when the right opportunity is given.

The team made the tests in the context of decreasing racial prejudice. The scientists presented the subjects with images of White, Black, or Asian faces, while their brain activity was assessed by EEG. The team then relayed randomized scores to the subjects, to see if they responded positively or negatively to the White, Black and Asian faces.

Subjects receiving results showing they had reacted negatively toward Black faces experienced significantly higher guilt, anxiety and sadness. But the guilt feeling was dominant over other sentiments, as revealed by the EEG, showing significant decrease in left-sided frontal asymmetry (linked to approach motivation) following feedback.

Thus, the subjects initially experienced the punitive withdrawal motivation.

During another test, the subjects had to read a variety of magazine headlines. Amongst the headlines, there were three titles connected to prejudice reduction ("Improving your interracial interactions," 10 ways to reduce prejudice in everyday life," and "Ways to eliminate your own racism in the new millennium").

The subjects were told they responded negatively toward black faces and they experienced activity changes in the left-sided frontal cortex while reading those articles, pointing towards approach motivation. Thus, when given the opportunity for reparation, guilt made people act in prejudice-reducing behavior.

Emotions have been regarded as relatively fixed and basic, while the new research reveals them as dynamic and engaged in regulating behavior. And overall, the role of guilt seems to promote prosocial behavioral shifts.

New Hope for Hermaphrodites - More findings on the genetics and phisiology of the sex development
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

There are increasingly more cases in which the inner sexual feelings do not march the external sex. And it's not merely about homosexuals. There are also numerous cases of ambiguous genitalia in humans, about 1: 4500 births.

"It is usually the first question new parents are asked â€" is it a boy or a girl? But when it is not possible to determine a baby's sex it is upsetting for families and raises questions about whether to assign a gender immediately or wait until a child gets older. These conditions are common, almost always traumatic for the families involved and require significant healthcare resources through
corrective surgery, hormone therapy, psychological support and other related treatments." said Professor Peter Koopman, from University of Queensland's Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB), who has recently received the GlaxoSmithKline Australia Award for Research Excellence that offers hope to children born with sexually ambiguous genitalia and other sexual development issues.

In 1990, Cambridge's Peter Goodfellow found SRY, a gene located on the Y chromosome responsible for triggering the male development. Any mutation on it was found to induce female development. When researchers inserted SRY into a XX female fetus mouse, the offspring was born male.

Following the discovery of SRY, Koopman has been working to understand the complex developmental networks within the gonads that trigger cells to turn into sperm or eggs. When these signals go out of control, it appears that testicular cancer develops.

"My work is essentially a study of how testes or ovaries develop in the embryo. The genetic controls that underpin development are complex and the pathway often breaks down, which can result in a broad spectrum of intersex conditions including a child of uncertain sex," said Koopman.

Tracking down the genes involved in this process and assessing how they work is crucial in understanding the emergence of these sexual abnormalities. Koopman's team is searching for other genes important for male/female sex determination and testis/ovaries development.

"A major motivator for me is to be involved in work that makes a real difference to people's lives. Research is a painstaking process but the belief that my work will benefit people is what keeps me so passionate about it."

It is increasingly clear that human sex is not determined by sex chromosomes (X and Y) but by genes placed on those chromosomes. A team led by Eric Vilain, a geneticist at the University of California, Los Angeles, showed that SRY does not trigger male development directly, but by blocking an "antitestis" gene. In fact, males with SRY but XX chromosomes range in traits from normal males to an ambiguous mix.

Test-tube investigations showed that SRY can stop gene transcription, working through interference. In 1994, Vilain's team succeeded in genetically modifying a male mouse while the gene was missing.

It appears that sex develops due to a fragile balance between about (till now discovered) 50 promale, antimale, and profemale genes, like DAX1 or WNT 4 (on the X chromosome). Over-expression of DAX1 develops an XY individual into a female. Vilain's team and Koopman's are collaborating to investigate expression patterns of the sex-specific genes in transsexual people.

A Woman's Promiscuity Determines the Sperm's Speed and Power - The human species amongst primates
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Humans, like animals, experience a fierce competition for sex. And this competition does not stop with mating, as a woman can be promiscuous. That's how sperm competition emerges. A new research has tried to see how sperm speed connects to the species’ sexual behavior, while placing us amongst other primates.

The team led by Jaclyn Nascimento at the University of California in San Diego, US, investigated sperm samples from humans, gorillas, chimpanzees and rhesus macaques.

Chimp and macaque sperm samples were obtained by employing artificial vaginas, while the gorillas were trained to donate sperm (with the help of an investigator) in exchange for candy. The team focused on specific sperm within the diluted samples, recording the sperm activity on film.

A specially developed sophisticated computer software measured the speed of a given sperm by tracking its head. The sperm samples from two males counted for a travel speed of about 0.2 km/hour, the same value found by previous researches.

The sperm from chimpanzees and macaques had a speed of 0.7 km/h. Chimps and macaques live in groups where males form coalitions, that's why any male can mate with any female, and vice versa. A chimp female can have multiple sex partners in one hour, thus the sperm competition is much stronger in this case.

"The first ones to make it to the egg succeed," said Nascimento.

But in the case of the gorillas, the sperm speed was of just 0.1 km/h. Gorillas live in a groups formed by one male, several females, and their offspring. Females have just one sex partner at a given time. "You are the best by default," said Nascimento.

Moreover, the team assessed the force developed by the sperm. The laser technology called "optical tweezers" held the sperm in place by employing light. Sperm had to develop enough force to break this resistance field for going forward.

The chimp and macaque sperm also appeared to be more powerful, at about 50 piconewtons, while human sperm developed just about 5 piconewtons, and gorillas some lousy 2 piconewtons.

The speed and power developed by the sperm is due to inner cell structures that power the movement of their tails. These structures' activity can be influenced in humans by some chemicals, like caffeine and anti-impotence drugs.

More Frequent Ejaculation, Less Cancer! - Prostate cancer impeded by frequent ejaculation
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Do you think that by employing the Daoist techniques of impeding ejaculation you will impress a new sex partner? Well, actually, you will get a nice prostate cancer later!

This is the result of a large epidemiological research made on 30,000 American subjects by Dr. Michael Leitzman, a cancer researcher at the
National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland: men who ejaculate more often have a decreased risk of developing prostate cancer later in life.

Previously, there was a suggested connection between an intenser sexual activity and higher incidents of prostate cancer in previous studies, as the male hormone testosterone, which promotes a more vigorous sex life was known to enhance cancer cell growth.

But Leitzmann discovered that men who ejaculated 13 to 20 times monthly presented a 14% lower risk of prostate cancer than men who ejaculated on average, between 4 and 7 times monthly for most of their adult life. Those ejaculating over 21 times a month presented a 33% decreased risk of developing prostate cancer than the baseline group.

The subjects were mostly white males, and Leitzmann said ‘the finding warrant further investigation’.

Those with a history of high ejaculation frequency over their lifetime were physically fit but also had a richer history of a sexually transmitted diseases, prostatitis and vasectomy. These men were also more likely not to be engaged in a long-term relationship (divorced or separated), consume more total calories, fish, alcohol and food supplements.

Researchers made corrections to their study in connection to the age, race, family history of prostate cancer, vasectomy, body mass at age 21, height, smoking years, type 2 diabetes, physical activity and calorie, fructose, vitamin E, zinc, meat, fish and alcohol intake.

A mean ejaculation frequency of 21 or more times monthly at 40-49, or over 13 per month during a lifetime was connected to a low risk of prostate cancer. This link was not connected to age, family history, sexual transmitted disease, smoking, or diet.

The researchers suspect that frequent ejaculations may damp into the prostatic fluid carcinogenic chemicals, like xenobiotics and others. Frequent ejaculation could also decrease the development of intraluminal prostatic crystalloids, linked by many researchers to prostate tumors.

The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned to their first ministry, to reopen a church in suburban Brooklyn, arrived in early October excited about their opportunities When they saw their church, it was very run down and needed much work. They set a
goal to have everything done in time to have their first service on Christmas Eve. They worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls, painting, etc, and on December 18were ahead of schedule and just about finished.

In December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church. His heart sank when he saw that the roof hadleaked, causing a large area of plaster about20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front
wall of thesanctuary just behind the pulpit, beginning about head high.T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, and not knowing what else to do but postpone the Christmas Eve service, headed home.

On the way he noticed that a local business was having a flea market type sale for charity so he stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross embroidered right in the center. It was just the right size to cover up the hole in the front wall. He bought it and headed back to the church. By this time it had started to snow.

An older woman running from the opposite direction was trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor invited her to wait in the
warm church for the next bus 45 minutes later. She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. Then he noticed the woman walking down the center aisle. Her face was like a sheet.. "Pastor,"she asked, "where did you
get that tablecloth?" The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria
The woman could hardly believe it as the pastor told how he had just gotten the Tablecloth.

The woman explained that before the war she and her husband were well-to-do people in Austria . When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. Her husband was going to follow her the next week. He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her husband or her home again. The pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;but she made the pastor keep it for the church. The pastor insisted on driving her
home, that was the least he could do. She lived on the other side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn for the day for a house cleaning job.

What a wonderful service they had on Christmas Eve! The church was almost full. The music and the spirit were great. At the end of the service, the pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door and many said that they would return. One older man, whom the pastor recognized from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he wasn't leaving. The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on the front wall because it was identical to one that his wife had made years ago when they lived in Austria before the war and how could there be two tablecloths so much alike. H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home again all the 35 years in between.

The pastor asked him if he would allow him to take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten Island and to the same house where the pastor had taken the woman three days earlier. He helped the man climb the three flights of stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on the door and he saw the greatest Christmas reunion he could ever imagine.

Uribe at his peak

The Fattest Man on the Planet: 560 kg (1,244 pounds)!
- From Mexico
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Guinness World Records is going to register him. Mexican Manuel Uribe had reached 560 kilos (1,244 pounds) weight but has already lost 200 kilos (444 pounds) because of the Zone diet. Uribe wants to also break the record for drastic slimming.

"I'm happy to be included in the Guinness World Records as the fattest man on the planet. I'm also happy that I have managed slimming 200 kg", said Uribe, now aged 42.

He lives in Monterrey (northern Mexico). It is reported that
Guinness authorities have informed him that he will be on the 2008 edition of the Records Book and on the 2009 one for the most incredible weight loss in a year (200 kilograms). He celebrated the event, managing to go out of the house aboard a trailer. Guinness offered him for his weight performance a glass plaque.

His photograph is included in the 2008 Guinness Book of Records alongside a description of the treatment he has had and offers of surgery he has received so far.

Uribe has been suffering from obesity for 20 years. At 20 years, he was working in US and weighed 130 kg (289 pounds) at a height of 1.95 m. He looked for medical help in 2006, when he reached 560 kilograms. Uribe appeared then on a TV channel asking to be helped to escape excess weight that kept him captive in the house for almost 20 years.

For the moment, Uribe cannot move by himself and lives immobilized on bed, his mother taking care of him. At 362 kg (800 lbs), Uribe is still morbidly obese but in March 2007 he set a goal: to slim till 120 kg (254 pounds).

Uribe's weight history:

1966 - Birth weight 6lbs (2.7 kg)
1984 - (18) 121 kg (19 stone)

Xia Aifeng combing her hair

The Longest Human Hair: 2.42 m (8 ft)!
- A Chinese woman
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

One important physical difference between humans and apes concerns human hair's ability to grow ceaselessly. And people make great fuss about their head adornment, as hair can be a sign of good health. Sometimes, this can turn a little bit ridiculous, like in this case: the hair is longer than the owner.

Xia Aifeng, 36, a Chinese woman from Shangrao, in eastern China’s Jiangxi province, has not cut her hair for 16 years, since she was 20. Her hair has grown to 2.42 meters (8 ft) long,
while she is just 1.6 m tall!

Xia washes her tresses once a week, a process which takes 90 minutes. The genetics of this woman is amazing, as hair has a three-stage development: growth (anagen), degeneration (catagen) and rest (telogen).

There are about 100,000 to 150,000 hair follicles on the scalp.

The anagen phase leads to the rapid multiplication of cells from the follicle's base (bulb), resulting in the continuous growth of hair fiber. When anagen ends, the hair-producing cells starts dying, entering the catagen phase, which lasts for a few weeks. After that, the telogen installs, when the follicle is metabolically inert and it can last for several weeks to even months. After that, the follicle enters another cycle: a new anagen and a new hair fiber start growing. The new fiber pushes out the old fiber which then falls out, often while brushing your hair.

As the cycles of the different follicles do not coincide, different parts of the body produce hairs of different lengths, depending on the various anagen time periods.

Scalp follicles can stay in anagen for many years, producing fibers over one meter in length, while the body hair remains in anagen only weeks or months, generating shorter hair. Xia's anagen could be really long...

Technology / How to Recover Unreadable CDs/DVDs?
July 21, 2007, 01:10:51 AM

This is what a CD that's been left in the microwave oven for 10 seconds looks like, so dont' try this at home if you plan on using the disk again.

How to Recover Unreadable CDs/DVDs: Just Boil Them! - Boiling a disc in water makes it readable again
By: Lucian Dorneanu, Science Editor - Softpedia

Did it ever happen to you to buy a new CD or DVD only to find out that the optical drive doesn't recognize it? There's a good way of making it readable again and it doesn't involve rocket science. It just requires a good hot bath.

Not for you, for the disk. Boiling disks in water for
a short time can recover even the most stubborn of them and can save you from pulling out some hairs from not being able to play the coolest game in the world that you just purchased.

One of the reasons why a brand new disk can become unrecognizable for the drive is the exposure to condensation, a phenomenon that occurs within the plastic wrapped subscription, as water molecules trapped in the air turn liquid when the temperature drops, for example during shipping.

The thin layer of plastic covering all discs, meant to protect the readable surface, can expand and contract in the optical drives, where the temperature is much higher than in the room or on a store shelf. The simplest way to eliminate water from the disk is to boil it.

Now don't go boil them like you were making soup, you just need enough water in a ball to cover the disk, then place the ball WITHOUT THE DISK in the microwave oven for about 60 seconds. If you put the actual disk in the oven, you won't get a readable disk back, you will only get to see a fireworks display and will be stuck with a probably useless appliance.

After you take the ball out of the oven, put the disk inside for 30 to 40 seconds that take it out using a tool, not your fingers, to grab it by the inner orifice and then dry it off with a paper towel gently.

The reason this process works is because the small elastomeric film on the disk is forced to expand, thus fixing all minor twists caused by shipping and removing the particles or debris from the surface in the hot water.

Now that you know a new use for your microwave, get ready for an instant RPG soup...

Inspiration & Hope / The Emperor's Seed
July 20, 2007, 11:35:11 PM
T H E   E M P E R O R'S   S E E D

An emperor in the Far East was growing old and knew it was time to choose his successor. Instead of choosing one of his assistants or his children, he decided something different.

He called young people in the kingdom together one day. He said, "It is time for me to step down and choose the next emperor. I have decided to choose one of you."

The kids were shocked! But the emperor continued. "I am going to give each one of you a seed today, one very special seed. I want you to plant the seed, water it and come back here one year from today with what you have grown from this one seed. I will then judge the plants that you bring, and the one I choose will be the next emperor!"

One boy named Ling was there that day and he, like the others, received a seed. He went home and excitedly told his mother the story. She helped him get a pot and planting soil, and he planted the seed and watered it carefully.

Every day he would water it and watch to see if it had grown. After about 3 weeks, some of the other youths began to talk about their seeds and the plants that were beginning to grow. Ling kept checking his seed, but nothing ever grew. 3 weeks, 4 weeks, 5 weeks went by. Still nothing.

By now, others were talking about their plants but Ling didn't have a plant, and he felt like a failure. 6 months went by; still nothing in Ling's pot. He just knew he had killed his seed. Everyone else had trees and tall plants, but he had nothing. Ling didn't say anything to his friends. He just kept waiting for his seed to grow. A year finally went by and all the youths of the kingdom brought their plants to the emperor for inspection.

Ling told his mother that he wasn't going to take an empty pot but his Mother said he must be honest about what happened. Ling felt sick to his stomach, but he knew his Mother was right.

He took his empty pot to the palace. When Ling arrived, he was amazed at the variety of plants grown by the other youths. They were beautiful, in all shapes and sizes. Ling put his empty pot on the floor and many of the other kinds laughed at him. A few felt sorry for him and just said,

"Hey nice try."

When the emperor arrived, he surveyed the room and greeted the young people. Ling just tried to hide in the back. "My, what great plants, trees and flowers you have grown," said the emperor. "Today, one of you will be appointed the next emperor!"

All of a sudden, the emperor spotted Ling at the back of the room with his empty pot. He ordered his guards to bring him to the front. Ling was terrified. "The emperor knows I'm a failure! Maybe he will have me killed!"

When Ling got to the front, the Emperor asked his name. "My name is Ling," he replied. All the kids were laughing and making fun of him. The emperor asked everyone to quiet down.

He looked at Ling, and then announced to the crowd, "Behold your new emperor! His name is Ling!" Ling couldn't believe it. Ling couldn't even grow his seed. How could he be the new emperor?

Then the emperor said, "One year ago today, I gave everyone here a seed. I told you to take the seed, plant it, water it, and bring it back to me today. But I gave you all boiled seeds, which would not grow. All of you, except Ling, have brought me trees and plants and flowers. When you found that the seed would not grow, you substituted another seed for the one I gave you.

Ling was the only one with the courage and honesty to bring me a pot with my seed in it. Therefore, he is the one who will be the new emperor!"

If you plant honesty, you will reap trust.

If you plant goodness, you will reap friends.

If you plant humility, you will reap greatness.

If you plant perseverance, you will reap victory.

If you plant consideration, you will reap harmony.

If you plant hard work, you will reap success.

If you plant forgiveness, you will reap reconciliation.

If you plant openness, you will reap intimacy.

If you plant patience, you will reap improvements.

If you plant faith, you will reap miracles.

But:

If you plant dishonesty, you will reap distrust.

If you plant selfishness, you will reap loneliness.

If you plant pride, you will reap destruction.

If you plant envy, you will reap trouble.

If you plant laziness, you will reap stagnation.

If you plant bitterness, you will reap isolation.

If you plant greed, you will reap loss.

If you plant gossip, you will reap enemies.

If you plant worries, you will reap wrinkles.

If you plant sin, you will reap guilt.

So be careful what you plant now, it will determine what you will reap tomorrow.

The seeds you now scatter will make life worse or better your life or the ones who will come after. Yes, someday, you will enjoy the fruits, or you will pay for the choices you plant today.

Dear Husband,

I'm writing you this letter to tell you that I'm leaving you for good. I've been a good woman to you for seven years and I have nothing to show for it. These last two weeks have been hell. Your boss called to tell me that you had quit your job today and that was the last straw.

Last week, you came home and didn't notice that I had gotten my hair and nails done, cooked your favorite meal and even wore a brand new negligee. You came home and ate in 2 minutes, and went straight to sleep after watching the game.

You don't tell me you love me anymore, you don't touch me or anything. Either you're cheating or you don't love me anymore, whatever the case is, I'm gone

Signed,

Your Ex-Wife

P.S. If you're trying to find me, don't. Your BROTHER and I are moving away to Cornwall together! Have a great life!

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Dear Ex-Wife,

Nothing has made my day more than receiving your letter. It's true that you and I have been married for seven years, although a good woman is a far cry from what you've been.

I watch sports so much to try to drown out your constant nagging. Too bad that doesn't work. I did notice when you cut off all of your hair last week, the first thing that came to mind was, "You look just like a man!" My mother raised me to not say anything, if you can't say anything nice. When you cooked my favorite meal, you must have gotten me confused with my brother, because I stopped eating pork seven years ago.

I went to sleep on you when you had on that new negligee because the price tag was still on it. I prayed that it was a coincidence that my brother had just borrowed fifty quid from me that morning and your negligee was Ã,£49.99. After all of this, I still loved you and felt that we could work it out.

So when I discovered that I had hit the lotto for ten million dollars, I quit my job and bought us two tickets to Jamaica . But when I got home you were gone.

Everything happens for a reason. I hope you have the fulfilling life you always wanted. My lawyer said with your letter that you wrote, you won't get a penny from me. So take care.

Signed,

Your Ex-Husband, Rich As Hell and Free!

P.S. I don't know if I ever told you this but Carl, my brother, was born Carla...I hope that's not a problem.

A Child Born Already Drunk! - It happened in Poland
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Lack of maternal instinct or severe alcoholism? Polish police announced on Friday that a baby came into the world under the influence of alcohol as his mother was drunk while giving birth!

Doctors took the decision of checking his blood-alcohol level when they saw the mother’s condition. What they saw left them speechless. Tests made 12 hours after the boy's birth uncovered a level of 1.2 grammes of alcohol per 1,000 grammes of blood. Translated to an adult drinker, this would mean a bottle of wine or two
liters of beer.

To understand the alcohol level in the baby's blood, just learn that blood-alcohol limit for drivers in Poland is 0.2 grammes, six times less than that found in the children's blood. The boy had five pounds, seven ounces (2.45 kg) at birth and was drunk before he was even born.

The baby entered in intensive care on Friday, and even if his condition was stable, he could have remained with long lasting brain damage. The 34-year-old mother fled the hospital in Zabrze (in south Poland) after the birth on Tuesday but she was arrested next day, when tests found no traces of alcohol in her blood.

"The woman is already the mother of five children. Their grandparents have custody because she has (already) been deprived of her parental rights," said police spokesperson Marek Wypych.

Studies have revealed not only that the brains of alcoholic individuals are smaller than those of non-alcoholic ones, due to their heavy alcohol intake, but also that their children have smaller brains.

Parents' alcoholism renders their children more prone to alcoholism than the children of non-alcoholic individuals. Besides the adverse genetics, the first children experience harmful biological and psychological factors like poor diets (from the mother’s womb and after, since alcoholic parents usually disregard food), unstable parental relationships, and alcohol exposure before birth.

What Is the Persistent Sexual Arousal Syndrome? - Woman's priapism
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Persistent Sexual Arousal Syndrome (PSAS) represents a spontaneous and persistent genital arousal (accompanied also by breast congestion), with or without orgasm or genital engorgement/swelling/lubrication, but not linked to a higher sex drive (patients are annoyed by this arousal) and which generally is unwanted and intrusive. It has nothing to do with hypersexuality (nymphomania). Those experiencing this rare condition frequently report shame or embarrassment.

The physical arousal can be very intense and persistent, for days or weeks at a time. Orgasm can sometimes induce temporary relief, but no mater how much sex intercourse/masturbation is practiced, after several hours the symptoms come back. Clearly, sex does not help in this case; not even 300 spontaneous orgasms/day in a reported case. Anyhow, a partner coping with such sexual demands is impossible to be found, not to mention men can feel dominated by such women.
The syndrome can appear on "spot" areas, like deep in the vagina, or in the clitoris area.

They can impair a subject's activity, impeding him/her to concentrate on daily tasks. Some situations, like riding in an automobile or train, mobile phone vibrations, and even bath use can exacerbate the syndrome, turning it unbearable. And everything starts strong sexual urges.

"Sitting is unbearable, sometimes causing pressure to orgasm. Standing is the only time I feel nothing. Sitting in a car is torture. The opening of the vagina is just as sensitive and a mere touch will bring me to orgasm. My husband is very sympathetic and relieves the terrible pressure anytime I ask. Those close to me that I've told about this at first think it's funny and then realize that indeed it is not."

"I was constantly feeling overwhelming sensations of sexual arousal, which were purely physical and not accompanied by romantic or sexual fantasies. Basically I felt the need to have repeated orgasms which was never relieved by normal orgasmic experience." These are testimonies of PSAS patients.

The partner can feel helplessness and confusion, uncertainty in providing relief, feelings of inadequacy, isolation and lack of support from family and peers, frustration and anger. The patient can experience shame and isolation, feelings of helplessness, vulnerability and sadness, being awakened in the morning by hot flashes, and a feeling of a lack of normalcy.

You can imagine the impairment in social life and keeping a job. Nobody holds an employee that goes so often to the bathroom.

For the moment, doctors can only guess an impairment in sensory nerves as the main case, as the diseases tend to prevail in post-menopausal women in their 40s and 50s, or those who followed hormonal treatment; still, there have also been signaled cases of women in their 30s. Others say it could be linked to the brain's limbic system, the center of pleasure and sex physiology. A brain tumor in an area receiving signals from the genitalia area has been recorded in a case. Ovary tumors have been also reported.

Some drugs like trazodone induce PSAS as a side effect. Sometimes, PSAS starts after stopping SSRIs (a class of antidepressants) or cholesterol-lowering treatments. One patient developed PSAS following surgery for urethral prolapse. Some cases are provoked by a pelvic arterial-venous malformation with arterial branches to the penis or clitoris; surgery is effective in this case.

Symptoms can be decreased with antidepressants, antiandrogenic agents and anaesthetising gels; medical treatment of irritating neurologic lesions, psychotherapy also helps.

THE STORY

When I got home that night as my wife served dinner, I held her hand and  said, I've got something to tell you. She sat down and ate quietly. Again I observed the hurt in her eyes. Suddenly I didn't know how to open my mouth. But I had to let her know   what I was thinking.  "I want a divorce!" I raised the topic calmly.

She didn't seem to be annoyed by my words, instead she asked me softly,   "Why"? I avoided her question. This made her angry. She threw away the chopsticks and shouted at me   you are not a man! That night, we didn't talk to each other. She was weeping. I knew she wanted to find out what had happened to our marriage. But I  could hardly give her a satisfactory answer, she had lost my heart to a  lovely girl called Dew.

I didn't love her anymore..I just pitied her! With a deep sense of guilt, I drafted a divorce agreement which stated  that she could own our house, our car, and 30% stake of my company.   She glanced at it and then tore it into pieces. The woman who had spent  ten years of her life with me had become a stranger. I felt sorry for  her wasted time, resources and energy but I could not take back what I  had said for I loved Dew so dearly.

Finally she cried loudly in front of me, which was what I had expected  to see. To me her cry was actually a kind of release. The idea of  divorce which had obsessed me for several weeks seemed to be firmer and  clearer now. The next day, I came back home very late and found her writing something  at the table. I didn't have supper but went straight to sleep and fell  asleep very fast because I was tired after an eventful day with Dew.

When I woke up, she was still there at the table writing. I just did not  care so I turned over and was asleep again. In the morning she presented her divorce conditions: she didn't want  anything from me, but needed a month's notice before the divorce. She requested that in that one month we both struggle to live as normal a  life as possible. Her reasons were simple: our son had his exams in a  months time and she didn't want to disrupt him with our brokenmarriage. This was agreeable to me.. But she had something more, she asked me to  recall how I had carried her into out bridal room on our wedding day.  She requested that everyday for the month's duration I carry her out of  our bedroom to the front door ever morning. I thought she was going  crazy. Just to make our last days together bearable I accepted her odd  request. I told Dew about my wife s divorce conditions. She laughed loudly and  thought it was absurd. No matter what tricks she applies, she has to  face the divorce, she said scornfully.

My wife and I hadn't had any body contact since my divorce intentionwas  explicitly expressed. So when I carried her out on the first day, we  both appeared clumsy. Our son clapped behind us, daddy is holding mummy  in his arms. His words brought me a sense of pain. From the bedroom to  the sitting room, then to the door, I walked over ten meters with herin  my arms. She closed her eyes and said softly, don't tell our son about  the divorce. I nodded, feeling somewhat upset. I put her down outside  the door. She went to wait for the bus to work. I drove alone to the  office.

On the second day, both of us acted much more easily. She leaned on my  chest.. I could smell the fragrance of her blouse. I realized that I  hadn't looked at this woman carefully for a long time. I realised she  was not young any more. There were fine wrinkles on her face, her hair  was graying! Our marriage had taken its toll on her. For a minute I  wondered what I had done to her.
On the fourth day, when I lifted her up, I felt a sense of intimacy returning. This was the woman who had given ten years of her life tome. On the fifth and sixth day, I realized that our sense of intimacy was growing again. I didn't tell Dew about this. It became easier to carry her as the month slipped by. Perhaps the everyday work-out made me  stronger.

She was choosing what to wear one morning. She tried on quite a few  dresses but could not find a suitable one. Then she sighed, all my  dresses have grown bigger. I suddenly realized that she had grown so  thin, that was the reason why I could carry her more easily.  Suddenly it hit me, .. she had buried so much pain and bitterness inher  heart. Subconsciously I reached out and touched her head.

Our son came in at the moment and said, Dad, it's time to carry mum out.  To him, seeing his father carrying his mother out had become an  essential part of his life. My wife gestured to our son to come closer  and hugged him tightly. I turned my face away because I was afraid I  might change my mind at this last minute. I then held her in my arms,  walking from the bedroom, through the sitting room, to the hallway. Her  hand surrounded my neck softly and naturally. I held her body tightly,  it was just like our wedding day. But her much lighter weight made me  sad. On the last day, when I held her in my arms I could hardly move a  step. Our son had gone to school. I held her tightly and said, I hadn't noticed that our life lacked intimacy. I drove to office.... jumped out of the car swiftly without locking the door. I was afraid any delay would make me change my mind... I walked  upstairs. Dew opened the door and I said to her, Sorry, Dew, I do not  want the divorce anymore. She looked at me, astonished. Then touched my forehead. Do you have a  fever? She said. I moved her hand off my head. Sorry, Dew, I said, I  won't divorce. My marriage life was boring probably because she and I  didn't value the details of our lives, not because we didn't love each  other any more. Now I realise that since I carried her into my home on  our wedding day I am supposed to hold her until death do us apart. Dew seemed to suddenly wake up. She gave me a loud slap and thenslammed  the door and burst into tears. I walked downstairs and drove away.

At the floral shop on the way, I ordered a bouquet of flowers for my wife. The salesgirl asked me what to write on the card. I smiled and wrote, I'll carry you out every morning until death do us apart.

The small details of your lives are what really matter in a relationship. It is not the mansion, the car, property , the money in the bank, blah..blah.. blah. These create an environment conducive for  happiness but cannot give happiness in themselves. So find time to be  your spouse's friend and do those little things for each other that  build intimacy. Do have a real happy marriage! If you don't share this, nothing will happen to you, but if you do, you just might save a marriage.

An artist's rendering of the tower proposed for 11th Avenue and A Street, in San Diego, Ca.

The Building That Looks Like a Penis - At least according to some city residents
By Lucian Dorneanu, Science Editor - Softpedia

Erecting record-breaking buildings seems to have become a fierce competition in the last decades. Owning it is a matter of great pride, not only for the builders â€" which gain a lot of fame and also a lot of money â€" but also for the hosting country, which will benefit from having one of the most important tourist attractions in the world.

Some of the buildings out there are really strange and usually produce amazement and admiration towards the designer. Well, this one
did exactly the opposite, and has managed to give birth to many controversies, because of its revolutionary design.

A new building about to be erected in San Diego has city residents protesting against it even though it is only a project, for now. The problem is the fact that there's too much "erection" involved in the project, since the building looks like a penis.

At least that's what many citizens think, despite the good intentions of the designers, who wanted to introduce a new organic approach to the 40-story-high residential building.

"If it looks like a phallic symbol, someone has a strange perception," says Sandor Shapery, the San Diego-based developer behind the design. "You can find sex anywhere if you want to...There's just some sick people out there."

Pugh + Scarpa's architect Gwynne Pugh seems to agree, at least in part, with the allegations, as he was hired by a downtown redevelopment agency to analyze the new building designs. "With its rounded forms and swelling of the uppermost floors...this building structure is very phallic," he says.

The poor architects are puzzled by the negative reaction, since they only wanted to design a building which would meet the highest energy conservation standards, like recycling water from the cooling system for use in the swimming pool, laundry, and irrigation.

Some modifications are now planned before the next review, but some people seem to always find a phallic symbol, in just about anything they see. Probably the best comment comes from a reader, who says: "The only thing it's missing is a giant fountain on the roof."

Why Do Muscles Get Tired? - From glycogen to lactic acid
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

The strong and prolonged contraction of a muscle during exercising causes sooner or later muscle fatigue. Researches showed that the fatigue increases while the glycogen stored in the muscles decreases.

The glycogen is a glucose polymer, like an animal starch. When the muscle needs glucose to burn, the glycogen cuts off from its large
macromolecule small molecules of glucose. The glucose is burned with oxygen brought by the blood through the red cells and thus water, carbon dioxide and the energy required by the muscle for producing the contraction result. This is the aerobic respiration (with oxygen, hence the name of aerobic gymnastics).

When there is no glucose (or glycogen) the muscles have problems in executing the work they have to do. Sometimes, after a prolonged muscular activity, the glycogen shortage is also completed by a fatigue of the neuro-muscular plaque, the place where electric impulses transmitted through the nerves are delivered to the muscle. In this case, the efficiency of the muscular contraction decreases.

But in the case of well-fed sportsmen or workers, usually the fatigue is the result of an oxygen shortage. This is especially the case with the bodybuilders. The blood flow to the muscles already does not compensate the oxygen required for extremely intense glucose burnings. In this case, the muscle is forced to appeal to a second type of respiration, called anaerobic, which takes place in the absence of oxygen. This is a reminder that all oxygen-employing organisms once were anaerobic, like many bacteria.

In this case, the burning products are lactic acid, carbon dioxide and energy (but in a smaller amounts than in the case of aerobic respiration). Beside the fact that this respiration is less effective, it also leads to the accumulation of lactic acid, a toxic compound for the muscle cell that blocks its activity.

The lactic acid causes the muscular fever, the intense muscle pain after a hard training. It takes a few days to get out of the muscle and after the effort is gone, the organism can further burn with oxygen the lactic acid to water and carbon dioxide. But remember: lactic acid is also a factor that triggers the muscle's growth (with all the accompanying blood vessels). So that next time a much harder training is required to get again muscle fever.

How Does Snoring Affect Our Sex Life? - And how is it classified?
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Snoring can be fun. But only in the movies and in cartoons. In real life, it can ruin lives and destroy marriages/relationships. That's why it’s no wonder why many researches have focused on this issue.

A recent study, commissioned by the hotel chain Travelodge, revealed that about 75 % of the British adults are snorers, and 33 % snore so badly that they disturb the sleep of their partner.

The research was made on a poll of 1,788 adult subjects, and revealed that 21% considered that snoring made them feel less sexual attractive in the bedroom. 10 % stated that the embarrassment of snoring had impeded them to sleep with a new partner. 20 % of the subjects said that snoring had a negative effect on their relationship.

"Modern lifestyles can be blamed for this increase in snoring, with boozing and unhealthy eating to blame. Our research shows that although snoring is often made fun of, it's a real problem that can have important effects on our wellbeing and lifestyle. Apart from lack of sleep and tiredness, snoring can cause intimacy issues and put an unnecessary strain on relationships. But there are a number of things people can do to prevent and/or reduce snoring." said Chris Idzikowski, a sleep expert from Edinburgh Sleep Center.

Most often, snoring can be caused by decreased airflow to the nasal passages, so sleeping with your head raised off the mattress, or on your side or stomach can help. Starfish and soldier sleeping positions (on the back, with the arms pinned to your sides or around the pillow) turn people more prone to snoring.

Losing weight, and stopping alcohol consumption can also decrease snoring in some cases.

The survey even made a classification of 5 types of snorers:

• The Snorter, 18% of the cases, is characterized by a specific rapid blowing of air through the nostrils and mouth, like the sound of a snorting horse.
• The Snorchestra, 12% of the subjects emit long, low snores that gradually climb into a deafening crescendo.
• The McEnroe type, 10% of the snorers, is characterized by violent grunting sounds, like the noise emitted by tennis stars when hitting the ball.
• The Walrus, 8% of the snorers, will emit continuous groaning noises during sleep.
• The Old Banger, 5% of the cases, emits noises similar to a broken car with a spluttering engine.

Models in Condom Fashion Show in Beijing

The Condom Fashion - In Beijing
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

It's quite easy to tell apart Japanese and Chinese tourists: hairstyle and clothing. Still, Chinese designers are keen on proving us that they are creative, going to the limit of fashion (and somehow of the good taste). They decked out models in condom couture at the Fourth China Reproductive Health New Technologies and Products Expo, sponsored by China's largest condom manufacturer, Guilin Latex Factory.

The bright colors this week on the Beijing catwalk did not focus on the fashion show but rather on the idea of safe sex. The fashion show comes to promote prophylactic use of condoms in the fight against HIV/AIDS and timed to World Population Day, organized yearly by the UN Population Fund. China faces a traditional taboo about sex talks, translated to scarce sex education, and to sexual ignorance that speeds AIDS and leads to a booming population, being also reflected in the great number of teen pregnancies and aborts.

Condoms of all shapes, colors and sizes were combined to make tight-fitting wedding gowns, scaly-looking evening dresses, outrageous bikinis, hats, lollipops and other garments made entirely of condoms, inflated or otherwise, reported Reuters on Thursday.
Visitors were also able to see condom-made craftwork, like Chinese knots, wind-bells, lanterns and decorations. "The popularity of condoms is not high, although relevant authorities have been committed in promoting HIV/AIDS prevention." said Tao Ran, director of the Guilin Latex Factory.

By 2033, the Chinese population is expected to increase by 200 million, from 1.3 billion to 1.5 billion, according to data from China's State Population and Family Planning Commission.

China introduced the strict one-child policy in the late 1970s under which families with more than one child received penalties (except the minority groups). "One (child) is not enough â€" two are better," visitor Song Weiliang told Reuters.

China originally stigmatized AIDS as a Western disease, restricted to gays, sex workers and drug users, which officially, did not even existed in communist China, signaled Reuters. But now, the disease is spreading quickly into the mainstream population.

Mike about the above failure to vote, the information was well disseminated. However, most of our OFWs could not go out of their job and vote. The facility is there, but work related constraints prevented them. Moreover, facilities of the embassy are limited like in one city, there is only one voting center and some people need to travel for a long distance. Should it be by other means like voting through cell phone or internet, I am pretty sure the numbers would have reached at 90%.

Once again, one of the reasons why the absentee voting was only 3% success because some OFWs have no guts to tell their bosses "I will be absent tomorrow to Vote".... it is due to fear of being fired... sobra ra ta ka bootan to the extent that one of our basic rights as citizens are being sacrificed....
ok raman na absentee voting if naay free transportation...
