RP swim team's gold medalists all going to Olympics

By Musong R. Castillo
Inquirer
Last updated 09:25pm (Mla time) 12/17/2007

BANGKOK, Thailand--The key to success, it seems, does not lie in preparations made at home.

Swimming, the biggest contributor to the Philippines' meager gold medal cache, drew its strength from tankers who trained in the United States.

Together, they put away all the RP team's gold medals in the pool at the just-concluded 24th Southeast Asian Games in faraway Nakhon Ratchasima province.

Eight of the paltry 41 golds won by the country in the 11-nation, biennial conclave came from the sport, with Miguel Molina winning three titles and sharing in the victory of a relay quartet.

Molina, the 23-year-old who holds a degree in human relations from the University of California at Berkeley, has trained in the US ever since the Philippine Amateur Swimming Association plucked him from age-group competitions early in his career.

He became the saving grace for the battered RP delegation at the Games by winning the Most Valuable Player (male) award, the third such time the prestigious citation has been bestowed on a Filipino.

The two others who won the plum were also swimmers--Eric Buhain in 1991 and Akiko Thomson in 1989.

"We make sure that they (RP swimmers) become good enough to be offered scholarships in the US, so they can train there," Mark Joseph, also a former national swimmer and now president of the Pasa, said.

"With that, we know that they are in good hands. We simply don't have the technology that they have there [in the US]," added Joseph, also the deputy secretary-general of the Philippine Olympic Committee.

Asked why only the Fil-Americans in the team shone for the Philippines, Joseph said his charges were all pure Filipinos.

He said the gold medalists were "100 percent Filipinos who just happened to be born somewhere else and then trained in the US because that is the Mecca of swimming."

"I trained in the US, so did Ral [Rosario] and Eric [Buhain], but we were never called Fil-Ams," Joseph explained.

Singapore, which pipped the Philippines for fifth overall and sealed the worst RP finish ever in the games, also trains its finest swimmers abroad.

"What we have achieved--a big number of silver and bronze medals--tells us that they (opponents) prepared better than we did," Philippine Sports Commissioner chair William "Butch" Ramirez said.

Not only did Molina--who was born in Japan to Filipino parents-- Ryan Arabejo, JB Walsh and Daniel Coakley win gold medals in the SEAG, they are now all going to the Olympics in Beijing next year.

"We know that we can compete in the world level," said Joseph. "What we really need is to fund these people because their scholarships don't cover their travel expenses."

Joseph said that he had written the PSC at least three times to fund Molina's training for the Beijing Olympics, which costs about $3,000 (about P123,000) a month.

Molina has left school and now needs to enter a personal training program under renowned swim coach Dave Salo.

The Pasa president is hopeful that someone from the private sector would step forward and foot Molina's bill.

Coakley, the 6-foot-1, 17-year-old great grandson of two-time Olympic bronze medalist Teofilo Yldefonso, was the fastest man in the pool after shattering the SEAG's 50-meter freestyle mark.

He plans to move out of Hawaii to train and study, along with Arabejo, at Bolles school and be under the guidance of Sergio Lopez, the former Olympic gold medalist from Spain.

Sports and Fitness / Bob Arum Warns Pacquiao
December 17, 2007, 09:36:37 PM
By Ronnie Nathanielsz
PhilBoxing.com

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is in the country for the 29th birthday bash of Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao in General Santos City on Monday but more importantly to plan his future and to warn him against taking his March 15 rematch with WBC super featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez for granted.

In a conversation with Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today at the Makati Shangri-la Hotel coffee shop Arum noted that while Pacquiao dropped Marquez three times in the first round of the 2004 bout and the Mexican’s “legs were wobbly in the second, Marquez won 90 percent of the remaining rounds and that tells you something.”

Arum said “it wasn’t a situation where Manny rallied in the end to get the draw. Manny had the guy out and couldn’t finish him off and down the stretch Marquez won every round.” Arum emphasized that Pacquiao must realize “it’s a real tough fight.”

The Top Rank promoter who recently celebrated his 76th birthday insisted that Pacquiao “has to train really hard and fight to the end because Marquez is still a great fighter and you can’t take him for granted.” Winning is clearly important for Pacquiao’s future, according to Arum.

Plans call for Pacquiao to fight for the WBC lightweight title of David Diaz in Macau in July and a possible blockbuster fight against Britain’s Ricky Hatton in Dubai in November. Arum said one of his friends was opening a sprawling Atlantis Hotel in Dubai which would be much bigger than the one in the Bahamas in November and “wants to kick it off with a fight” which would feature Pacquiao vs Hatton if the Filipino gets by Marquez and Diaz.

Arum noted that “at best Manny has three years left and I can make him a lot of money but he has got to realize he’s a fighter first and quit all this nonsense with the movies” and other things, referring to an article he read on the plane about a movie star linked to Pacquiao.

Arum will hold a news conference in Manila on Wednesday and plans a face-to-face event with Marquez in Los Angeles in January because “to have one now in the US doesn’t make any sense with Christmas coming.” Arum said one of the reasons he came to the Philippines is to “sit down and have a heart to heart talk with him” because of promotional concerns. He said that while they “do very well with his (Pacquiao’s) fights, you make money and ticket sales are good its not growing like it should” which is because they cannot promote Pacquiao’s fights if he “comes to the US the week of the fight and he has to finish up his training which leaves no time to promote the fight.”

Arum wants Pacquiao to be at Freddie Roach’s gym at least six to eight weeks before the Marquez fight because he could “get him on TV programs without interfering with his training and I can have magazine interviews and I can break him out to the general public. Otherwise, we are just fooling ourselves.”

Roach also arrived in Manila and quickly took a connecting flight to Pacquiao’s hometown.

SOLIS SHUTS DOWN BATAWANG'S DREAM

By Dong Secuya
PhilBoxing.com
Sun, 16 Dec 2007

GUADALAJARA, MEXICO -- Guadalajara's own son and hero, Ulises 'Archie' Solis, amidst the wild cheering of thousands of his compatriots inside the Auditorio Benito Juarez here, brought the fight to Bert Batawang of the Philippines from the outset and totally dominated and dismatled Batawang before the referee stopped the contest at 2:33 in the 9th round.

Solis (26-1-2 20KOs), successfully defended his IBF light flyweight title for the 6th time and fulfilled his promise to have his second Filipino victim in Batawang (50-7-0, 34KOs).

Solis climbed the ring tonight the bigger and quicker fighter over Batawang who got lost in Solis' speed and counterpunching abilities that made Batawang tentative all night long.

All three judges, David Robertson, Rafael Lopez Santos and Dr. Oldemar Soto had identical scores of 80-72, giving all rounds to Solis, after the 8th round. PhilBoxing.com also had it 80-72 for Solis after 8th round.

Batawang made the fight interesting in the first half of the 4th round when he hit Solis with some good shots in the head and the body as he continued to chase Solis who seemed to be hurt. Solis however recovered in time to return the compliment to Batawang in the second half of the 4th round to steal Batawang's best round in the night.

From the 5th round onwards, it was all Solis' show as he tagged Batawang with jabs and combinations and crisp counters every time Batawang attempted to throw some punches which is far and in between. Batawang was cut in the right eyebrow by a legimate punch in the 8th round before the referee mercifully stopped the contest in the 9th round as Solis chased Batawang who appeared to be defenseless.

Batawang would later say after the fight that he was hit by Solis with a hard left over his right rib cage in the 5th round that practically immobilized him in the remainder of the contest.

As far as 36-year-old's Batawang's future is concerned, Samson Gello-ani, Batawang's manager, said that he would have Bert take a long rest and probably give him a one local fight before assessing Batawang's future.

Team Batawang will leave Guadalajara for Los Angeles Sunday afternoon before returning to the Philippines on Dec. 18.
