A Filipino family was killed when a fire gutted their home in Union City, New Jersey last week, ABS-CBN North America News Bureau reported Sunday.
Bureau chief Ging Reyes identified the fatalities as Eduardo Aguas, his wife Digna, daughter Emily and mother-in-law Flotilda Tullao.
The lone survivor was as Aguas's 21-year-old son, EJ, who was able to jump out of a window at the height of the blaze Wednesday.
Arson investigators said the fire probably started at the basement. The blaze quickly spread to the rest of the house.
Three of the fatalities, they said, died at the second floor while Aguas was still able to exit the house. He, however, he died at the backyard.
The Filipino community in Union City will offer a memorial Mass for the victims on Monday.
The online edition of the Star Ledger newspaper in New Jersey quoted relatives as saying that Aguas and his family immigrated to the United States in the 1980s.
Antonio, Aguas's sibling, said his brother came first in 1985 and landed briefly in San Francisco before settling in New Jersey and sending for his wife and son.
