Bible Study / Memorare
November 26, 2012, 12:47:19 AM
a priest had advised me to pray this, eight times a day, especially during desperate times.

(i think lorenz had already posted this somewhere, but let me post this again anyway.)

this is the prayer that i feel had bestowed on me and my family untold graces, like being snatched from the jaws of despair.

Memorare

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession, was left unaided.

Inspired with this confidence, I fly to you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother.  To you I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful.

O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in your mercy, hear and answer me.  Amen.

Ten.

Write without pay until somebody offers pay.  If nobody offers within three years, the candidate may look upon this circumstance with the most implicit confidence as the sign that sawing wood is what he was intended for.

Nine.

The time to begin writing an article is when you have finished it to your satisfaction.  By that time you begin to clearly and logically perceive what it is that you really want to say.
#27404
Eight.

Use plain, simple language, short words and brief sentences. That is the way to write English--it is the modern way and the best way. Stick to it; don't let fluff and flowers and verbosity creep in.
#27405
Seven.

Damnation (if you will allow the expression), get up and take a turn around the block and let the sentiment blow off you.  Sentiment is for girls... There is one thing I can't stand and won't stand, from many people.  That is, sham sentimentality.
#27406
Six.

Use good grammar.
#27407
Five.

Substitute damn every time you're inclined to write very; your editor will delete it and the writing will be just as it should be.
#27408
Four.

You need not expect to get your book right the first time.  Go to work and revamp or rewrite it.  God only exhibits his thunder and lightning at intervals, and so they always command attention.  These are God's adjectives.  You thunder and lightning too much; the reader ceases to get under the bed, by and by.
#27409
Three.

As to the Adjective: when in doubt, strike it out.
#27410
Two.

Use the right word, not its second cousin.
#27411
One.

Get your facts first, and then you can distort them as much as you please.

Mark Twain's Top Ten Writing Tips
"Don't let fluff and flowers and verbosity creep in"

By Richard Nordquist, About.com Guide

Mark Twain (aka Samuel Clemens)

Widely regarded as the greatest American writer of his time, Mark Twain was often asked for advice on the art and craft of writing. Sometimes the famous humorist would respond seriously, and sometimes not. Here, in remarks drawn from his letters, essays, novels, and speeches, are ten of Twain's most memorable observations on the writer's craft.

The name "Diwali" or "Divali" is a contraction of "Deepavali", which translates into "row of lamps".  Diwali involves the lighting of small clay lamps filled with oil to signify the triumph of good over evil. These lamps are kept on during the night and one's house is cleaned, both done in order to make the goddess Lakshmi feel welcome. (wikipedia)

whoever is the news reporter/writer here, i wonder if he would write this way if it were his next of kin who's the subject of this tragic tale.  the same can be asked of the newspaper publisher.  our media practitioners truly have a long way to go when it comes to respecting other people's privacy and grief.  except their own.
#27435
this particular news report only adds to the salacious details imagined about the tragedy.  wa gyoy bag-o when compared to the previous one (http://tubagbohol.mikeligalig.com/index.php?topic=59592.0#.ULMOi2cqDrc), gawas sa first paragraph.  it's a poor attempt at keeping the public interested.

Legacy

Hus was a key contributor to Protestantism, whose teachings had a strong influence on the states of Europe and on Martin Luther himself. The Hussite Wars resulted in the Basel Compacts which allowed for a reformed church in the Kingdom of Bohemiaâ€"almost a century before such developments would take place in the Lutheran Reformation. The Unitas Fratrum (or Moravian Church) considers itself a spiritual heir to many of Hus' followers.[8] Hus' extensive writings earn him a prominent place in Czech literary history. He is also responsible for introducing the use of diacritics (especially the háček) into Czech spelling in order to represent each sound by a single symbol. Today, the Jan Hus Memorial can be seen at the Prague Old Town Square (Czech StaromÄ›stské námÄ›stí).

In New York City, a church in Brooklyn (located at 153 Ocean Avenue), and a church and a theatre in Manhattan (located at 351 East 74th Street) are named for Hus: respectively the John Hus Moravian Church, the Jan Hus Presbyterian Church and the Jan Hus Playhouse. Although the Manhattan's church and theatre share a single building and management, the Playhouse's productions are usually non-religious or non-denominational.

A statue to Jan Hus was erected in the Union Cemetery in Bohemia, New York (on Long Island) by Czech immigrants to the New York area in 1893. The statue was the first memorial in the United States to honour a foreign-born person. (wikipedia)

Jan Hus Day

Jan Hus Day (Den upálení mistra Jana Husa) on 6 July, the anniversary of the martyrdom of Jan Hus, is a public holiday in the Czech Republic. Hus is also commemorated as a martyr in the Calendar of Saints of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America on that day. (wikipedia)

Czech Republic: 6 July is a public holiday in the Czech republic, commemorating the execution of Jan Hus.

United States: Hus is honored with a feast day on the liturgical calendar of the Episcopal Church (USA) on 6 July. (wikipedia)

Aftermath

Responding with horror to the execution of Hus, the people of Bohemia moved even more rapidly away from Papal teachings, spurring an announced crusade against them. Pope Martin IV issued a Papal bull that all supporters of reformers like Hus and Wycliffe be slaughtered. The crusaders lost, as did the second and third crusades that followed. A century later, as much as ninety percent of the Czech Crown lands still followed Hussite teachings. (wikipedia)

it was during the time of the so-called antipope john xxiii (of the western schism period).  john xxiii (aka baldassarre cossa) became pope a day after he was ordained priest and had the full support of the medicis.  it was his practice of having his officials sell indulgences that huss and his followers like jerome were up against.

Boxing and Boxers / Re: Boxer Hector 'Macho' Camacho dies
November 25, 2012, 02:59:41 AM
De La Hoya knew the importance of beating up and knocking down Camacho in their 1997 bout:

“Listen, Chavez … and Felix Trinidad couldn't knock him out or drop him,” De La Hoya said afterward. “At least I dropped him.”

Camacho’s love of the sport was evident both in his desire to entertain beyond fisticuffs and instances such as his 1995 fight in the Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles.

There, recalled promoter Don Chargin, main-event fighter Camacho showing up with his hands wrapped, in a robe and colorful trunks to sit alongside off-night fighters and managers in complimentary seats to watch preliminary matches 90 minutes before his own bout against Tony Rodriguez.

“He just wanted to be with people,” Caplan said.

Camacho’s son, Hector Camacho Jr., is a middleweight boxer with a 54-5-1 record who most recently fought in July.

When Camacho suffered his first loss in a 1991 World Boxing Organization lightweight title bout against Greg Haugen at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, his personable nature shined.

“You’d think the guy would be devastated, but 15 minutes after the loss, he was back in press row for the second fight of the HBO doubleheader, shaking everyone’s hands,” Caplan said. “Just a happy-go-lucky guy who loved people.”

The flash wasn’t a mask to toughness. He was never knocked out.

Camacho’s grit was unmistakable to anyone who observed his 1992 beating in front of a sold-out Las Vegas fight crowd at the hands of Chavez Sr., Mexico’s greatest fighter who was at his peak when he pummeled Camacho with body shots en route to a unanimous decision.

Hector "Macho" Camacho, Oscar De La Hoya
( Los Angeles Times / November 20, 2012 )
Hector "Macho" Camacho poses with Oscar De La Hoya De La Hoya's in East L.A. gym.

“When he was young, you couldn’t hit him, that’s why he won his first 50 fights,” veteran boxing publicist Bill Caplan said.

The success emboldened his flair for flamboyance, as former Times boxing writer Richard Hoffer captured in a 1985 story:

“His style of dress … is outlandish enough to make Liberace look reserved. He wears enough jewelry to make Mr. T look like a man who only dabbles in accessories. It must be great fun to watch Camacho walk through a metal detector.”

Boxing and Boxers / Re: Boxer Hector 'Macho' Camacho dies

Camacho’s theatrics were combined with an admirable desire to take on the best opponents possible. He faced the likes of Freddie Roach, Cornelius Boza Edwards, Rafael “Bazooka” Limon, Felix Trinidad, Roberto Duran and Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. His overall record was 79-6-3.

Camacho was born in Bayamon on May 24, 1962, and moved to New York City with his family. His career launched after he admitted to stealing cars in Spanish Harlem as a youth, with one transgression forcing him to jail in Rikers Island, N.Y. There, he boxed other inmates and was so good, one asked a question that stuck with him: “What are you doing here?”

November 25, 2012, 02:38:35 AM
The late Times columnist Jim Murray assessed the crowd-pleasing disparity between De La Hoya and Camacho like this:

“Oscar was winning a gold medal for his country, Macho was stealing one for himself. Oscar plays golf, Macho plays craps. He was a hyperactive child, and he's a hyperactive adult.

“He has a positive flair for rubbing people the wrong way, doing exactly what nobody wants. For instance, in his last fight, he committed the unpardonable sin of beating up Sugar Ray Leonard, no less. That's about as endearing to the public as burning the flag.”

Camacho, known for wearing outlandish trunks ranging from a leopard loin cloth to others adorned with lights or tassels, well understood the importance of selling a fight and employing some mental warfare.

Before fighting Mancini, he said, “I never did nothing to the character. How can he dislike a good-looking guy like me? It's jealousy. He can't even be in the same room with me because he knows he can't beat me mouth-to-mouth.”

Hector “Macho” Camacho, a former three-division boxing champion who had 88 professional fights against a who’s who of legendary opponents stretching from Ray Mancini (whom he defeated in 1989) to Oscar De La Hoya (who beat him by decision in 1997), has died. He was 50.

Camacho was pronounced dead Saturday after being shot in the head four days earlier while seated in a car outside a bar in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. Camacho’s condition deteriorated before his family opted to take him off life support.

Another man in the car, who had nine bags of cocaine in his possession, was also shot and immediately declared dead, according to the Associated Press.

3 Simple Tips to Keep Your Kidneys (and Arteries) Clean

by Health Tips

Kidneys play a key role in cleansing your body, including your arteries. If your kidneys are backed up or clogged, they aren’t able to clean out your blood as well as they should, which can lead to aging in your arteries. Follow these easy tips to help keep your kidneys working at their optimal levels.

Drink water. Dehydration can increase your risk of kidney problems by 20%. An easy way to incorporate more water into your day is to carry a BPA-free water bottle with you as much as possible--in your car, at your desk and even when you’re eating a meal.

Try yogurt or milk. Keep your blood pressure in check with 2 cups of yogurt and one glass of milk per day. The calcium in yogurt and milk can lower your risk of blood pressure surges by 25%.

Reduce salt. Diets high in salt increase the risk of kidney stone, since extra salt in your diet pushes calcium into your kidneys, rather than into your bones, where it’s supposed to be. Try eating less processed food and substituting dried herbs as a food topping rather than table salt.

The two animals together: They have now been handed over to the RSPCA for re-homing

As they should have been: The two dogs, pictured when their hair was short

The court was told the animals were found living in the ‘most appalling and unimaginable' conditions.

Paul Watson, defending, said Kinghorn had health problems, including visual impairment caused by dense cataracts and had no-one to help her look after the animals.

He said: 'This is not a case of deliberate cruelty, but one of neglect.

'She didn't know where to turn for assistance.'

Kinghorn was also ordered to pay £250 towards the RSPCA costs and the magistrates ordered the transfer of all of her animals to the charity.

An RSPCA officer said: 'I can only describe them as dog-like, because there were no discernible points of the mouth, nose, or eyes through the mass or fur and dreadlocks'

Kinghorn was also given an eight-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, and a two-month curfew order, which involves her having to stay at home between 7pm and 7am and be electronically tagged.

She was previously banned from owning cats for five years in 2003.

She admitted causing unnecessary suffering to the three shih-tzus and the German Shepherd between October last year and April this year.

She also admitted four charges of failing to ensure the welfare of the four dogs and 12 cats in her care.

Bedlington Magistrates Court heard how the three shih-tzus had been neglected for five or six months, and that an elderly German Shepherd dog also found at Kinghorn's home had to be put down as it was in such poor health.

RSPCA Inspector Trevor Walker said: 'I have worked for the RSPCA for more than 15 years and during that time I have witnessed some pretty horrific things.

'However, I can honestly say that I've never seen such a deeply depressing sight as these three shih-tzu dogs.

'I can only describe them as dog-like, because there were no discernible points of the mouth, nose, or eyes through the mass or fur and dreadlocks.'

Kinghorn, 63, was yesterday handed a lifetime disqualification from keeping animals.

Squalid: The animals were kept in appalling conditions and were left ungroomed

They were forced to drag themselves along the floor using their front legs due to the mass of hair.

An RSPCA officer finally rescued the dogs from Kinghorn's filth-laden home in Linton Colliery, Northumberland.

An experienced vet and expert dog groomer said their overgrown and unkempt coats were in the worst condition of neglect she had ever seen.

Cruel dog owner is banned from keeping animals for life after letting shih-tzus' coats grow so long they couldn't see or walk

Dogs were rescued by RSPCA after six months of neglect

Inspector: 'I've never seen such a deeply depressing sight as these dogs'

A woman has been banned from keeping animals for life after her dogs' coats were left in such an appalling condition, they could hardly walk or see.

Pauline Kinghorn's three shih-tzus were barely recognisable as dogs, as their fur was so long and matted with food and faeces.

nakasuway na ko ani, with 2 kittens and 1 dog.  lalis una sa vet, who insisted.

bali ang buko-buko sa usa sa kittens nga akong napunitan.  ingon ang vet nga mo-suffer lang ang kitten.  but the kitten was so alive and frisky!  di lang gyod makatindog on all fours.  nagsaguyod lang.  tubag ko nga di ba diay siya makaimbento ug morag brace sa lawas sa kitten?  uh-huh.  nag-emote na lang ko.  pagkagabii, apologetic intawon kaayo ang iyang email nako.  i miss that vet nga romanian.  he's one of the best vets i've encountered.

as for the dog, wa ko mouli sa balay pagkagabii.  didto ko sa akong amiga, gasige ug emote.  aw, sige na lang kun tawgon kog abno.

mao gani link lang akong gibutang to give you an option to open or not.. it was gruesome Ma'am Isles.. :'( :'( :'(

purya mga tawhana.  after these dogs served them; ka way puangod.  mao nga tuo gyod ko nga ang ubang tawo, batasan ug hayop kuno, pero sayop na.  ang ubang hayop, batasan ug tawo.

kapila ra man unta pag-put down na lang painlessly kun lisod na gyod, like having a professional veterinarian do it with anesthesia.  just let them sleep painlessly, never to wake up again.

:'(:'(:'( i've seen only one pure husky so far.  a very impressive dog.  ibog kaayo ko.  (but as usual, my preference is always our own neglected askals.)

that husky won the dog contest i attended two years ago, somewhere outside our country.  a taiwanese couple owned him.  lupig pay anak nga spoiled ang treatment.  nag-hire sila ug filipina yaya for the dog, way lain trabaho, makigduwa lang sa iro.  problema, di siya pakatulgon ug hapon kay magsige rag duwa.  kuhiton man siya sa husky kun makatulog siya, hahaha.

sorry, i did not go to that link.  i'm too heartbroken now.  i must have been a dog in a previous incarnation.
