Ilang naabtan si Amarillo nga wa mag-uniporme ingon man way exemption sa Comelec hinungdan nga ilang gidakop.

Siya niingon nga maayong tawo si Amarillo ug kaila ang iyang mga sakop.

Ilang naabtan si Amarillo nga nagguroy pa sa iyang kanding nga napalit sa live stock sa merkado.

Philippines says 'no' to short cops
(AFP) â€" 4 hours ago

MANILA â€" Short people hoping to join the long arm of the law in the Philippines will be left disappointed after President Benigno Aquino vetoed a bill removing height requirements for police on Monday.

Parliament had passed a bill repealing minimum height requirements for the police, fire service and jail guards, but the president felt that some jobs required people of a certain stature, his spokeswoman Abigail Valte said.

"If you need to rescue someone from a burning house... or secure detainees, then you would need certain physical attributes. That is the nature of these jobs and it is not discrimination," she told reporters.

The minimum height of five feet, four inches (1.63 metres) for men and five feet, two inches (1.57 metres) for women applying for these jobs, would still apply, Valte said.

She said the police and other agencies already granted height requirement waivers for certain applicants so short people still could get in if they have special qualifications.

In 1927, Josephine brought Nancy, Rose and later Vincent to America aboard the SS Conte Biancamano.

The Lampertis opted to settle in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn, the neighborhood where Nancy found work as a seamstress at a time when wages were just $10 a week.

She met her husband, Louis Lamperti, in 1940. He was a carpenter by trade.

In 1945, the couple said their “I do’s” in Our Lady of Guadalupe R.C. Church, Brooklyn.

In time, Nancy and Louis relocated to Staten Island and moved into a small bungalow apartment off Sand Lane in South Beach.

They became the parents of twin daughters, Dolores and Lucille, and later settled in another South Beach home, where they raised their family, who also included a son, Louis Jr. who was born nine years later.

Louis, our source, reveals that his mom’s day usually begins around 5 a.m. â€" with her often still insisting on making the coffee â€" and the beds.

Hooray for Nancy Lamperti, who should be applauded on this Easter Sunday, on the occasion of her 101st birthday.

Born Annunziata Ranieri on March 30, 1912, in the town of Oppido Mamertina, in the Province of Reggio Calabria, Italy, to Josephine and Rocco Ranieri, Nancy was one of three children.

Her brother was Vincent and her sister Rose. Interestingly, Nancy (Annunziata), was named after the Feast of the Annunciation.

According to Nancy’s son, Louis Lamperti Jr., his mom was forced to curtail her education, and picked olives in the mountains of her town in order to help support her family.

Bible Study / A wakeup call
April 01, 2013, 05:48:07 AM
Daily Scripture (March 31, 2013)
http://www.passionist.org/reflection/daily

Easter is a wakeup call - to a beautiful day and a wonderful way of life.   I often reflect on the Easter experience.  One thing that I find intriguing is that Jesus' disciples, who were in hiding...totally disappointed...totally lost...suddenly changed. Not just one of them, but all of them. When they had an experience of the risen Lord, they came out of hiding, and looking back, finally understood what Jesus was all about.

The resurrected Christ was not the same as he was before. He could appear and disappear, he could change his looks so he wouldn't be recognized, yet he could eat and be touched.  The followers of Jesus recognized him, believed in him and changed. They went from a group of frightened and scattered followers to a group of excited men and women, anxious to share their joy, their insights, and their love. That is the miracle of Easter.

In today's Gospel, John talks about the "other disciple" who ran to the empty tomb with Peter and upon entering it, "...he saw and believed."  Some scholars believe that this unnamed disciple could be you or me.

Many years ago, I experienced the Risen Lord in a most profound and powerful way.  For me, Good Friday was the end of my long and painful journey into alcoholism.   In the depths of my hopelessness and despair, I cried out for help ...and instantly, Jesus heard this cry...the cry of the poor...and I was immediately touched by the Risen Lord.  I became that "other disciple."  My life began to change at that moment and has continued to change even as I write this reflection.  What began as a feeling that my life was "falling apart" evolved into a realization that it was actually "falling into place."  I began the process of becoming the person that God created me to be.  The past thirty years have been an exciting journey, one filled with peace and gratitude and a joyful willingness to pass on to others what was freely given to me.

Today is the day of Easter joy. Yet, even as we celebrate, we are painfully aware that for many people it is still Good Friday.  Every day it seems there is something to remind us of the poverty, injustice, and violence of our world.

My true faith journey began in a cemetery. Not in a stable. Not at the river Jordan. Not in an upper room. The first resurrection appearances happened in a cemetery garden.  Cemeteries are holy ground. Easter places.  And Easter tells us that Jesus' tomb is empty and so is his cross. He is not there. He has gone ahead of us. He is among us...HAPPY EASTER !!!

Caught in dynastic pincers

Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said, “It should be clear what political dynasty means … Not all dynasties are bad; not all dynasties are good.”

He stopped short of declaring in what category the Aquino dynasty belonged (from the late Sen. Benigno Aquino Jr., former President Cory Aquino and down to the incumbent President). He defended the inclusion of dynastic heirs in the Team PNoy senatorial lineup, saying they had “proven themselves” in public service.

Mr. Aquino is fielding his own cousin, Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV, who is totally inexperienced in public service, and other relatives of dynastic politicians, as follows:

Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano, son of a former senator and brother of incumbent Sen. Pia Cayetano; Sen. Aquilino Pimentel III, son of former Sen. Aquilino Pimentel Jr.; Aurora Rep. Juan Edgardo Angara, son of incumbent Sen. Edgardo Angara; and former Las Piñas Rep. Cynthia Villar, wife of Sen. Manuel Villar.

As a plague on both houses, the opposition United Nationalist Alliance, is fielding candidates who are members of family dynasties: Rep. Jack Enrile, son of Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile; Rep. JV Ejercito, son of former President Joseph Estrada; and Nancy Binay, daughter of Vice President Jejomar Binay.

Whichever ticket wins control of the Senate, there is no escape from the dynastic families. We are caught in their pincers.

Constitutional prescription

While it did not identify which candidates should be elected, the pastoral letter was clearly telling the people that the dynasties were wrong and “will not help our country.” The bishops called on their constituency to make a conscience vote.

In issuing the pastoral letter, it was clear that the bishops were aware that the odds were stacked against them. President Aquino has refused to certify as urgent the passage of the antidynasty bills that have been pending in Congress for the past 25 years.

One of the pending bills is House Bill No. 3413 introduced by Representatives Teddy A. Casiño, Neri Javier Colmenares, Rafael Mariano, Luzviminda Ilagan, Antonio Tinio, Emerenciana de Jesus and Raymond Palatino.

It says “the extended family… has found its pernicious effects in the public arena which has become the exclusive domain of influential families and clans. Such families have become so well-entrenched in Philippine politics they have monopolized political power and public resources at all levels of government.”

The bill cites Article II, Section 26 of the Constitution which states, “The state shall guarantee equal access to public service and prohibits political dynasties as may be defined by law.”

As a means to give force and effect to the social justice provisions of the Constitution, which provides for the diffusion of economic and political influence, the bill says “it is necessary  that the political arena  be leveled by opening public office to persons who are equally qualified to aspire on even terms with those from politically dominant families.”

In response to the CBCP statement, Malacañang blurred the issue by saying a distinction should be made between “good” and “bad” political dynasties.
#27325
The CBCP letter said:

“Political authority exists for the common good. It is not to be exercised for the sake of private and family interests or simply for the interests of a political party. When political authority is exercised merely for these narrow interests, it betrays the reason for its existence. Moreover, such situation breeds corruption and inhibits general access to political power which is a fundamental mark of democracy.

“Therefore, we denounce the continued existence of family political dynasties and the continuing delay of passing a law to implement the constitutional provision banning political dynasties.”

The letter said lawmakers had to define the mandate of the Constitution for an  enabling law that would ban such dynasties, a condition that “breeds corruption and ineptitude.”

If Congress is unwilling to  act on such a law, the Church would back the holding of peoples’ initiative provided for in the Constitution that would push for an enabling  law against  political dynasties, it said.
Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma  told reporters that  since the May elections were fast approaching, a law against dynasties was  too late.

“It will be up to the electorate to vote or not for members of dynasties,” he said. “We raised the issue so that people will think about it, and what we also want to show is that we are one with them and understand their longing, hopes and dreams.”

In six weeks, we will know if Filipino voters will repudiate the election of members of political dynasties to senatorial and congressional offices and more than 17,000 provincial and municipal posts all over the country.

In a pastoral letter issued on Jan. 29, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Philippines (CBCP) for the first time in its long history of interventions in Philippine politics denounced political dynastiesâ€"those powerful and influential families that have ruled the country since the inception of democracy in 1935 under the Commonwealth government.

The Catholic hierarchy lambasted the spread of political dynasties as one of a  “long litany of storms” that visited the country in recent memory.
The pastoral letter came two weeks before the official start of the campaign for the May 13 midterm elections, highlighting political dynasties as a central issue in the balloting, even more important than the reproductive health law  being pushed by President Aquino that has divided deeply the Church and the Philippine state.

The statement was overarching and spared no partisan political group, and with it, the Church put its influence over its lay constituency on the line in this predominantly Roman Catholic country.

According to an Inquirer report, a tally by the nongovernment Center for People Empowerment in Governance put at 178 the number of “dominant political dynasties” in the Philippines.

Of the total, 100 dynastiesâ€"or 56 percentâ€"are “old elites,” with the rest being the so-called “new elites” which emerged out of the 1986 Edsa People Power Revolution that toppled the Marcos dictatorship.

These data alone indicate the tenacity and deep-seated roots of the dynastic tradition in Philippine politics.

Of the 80 provinces, 94 percent have political dynasties, the center reported.

But in a 2012 interview, Pope Francis (then Cardinal Bergoglio) said that he favoured maintaining priestly celibacy. He said: “In Western Catholicism, some organizations are pushing for more discussion about the issue. For now, the discipline of celibacy stands firm. Some say, with a certain pragmatism, that we are losing manpower. If, hypothetically, Western Catholicism were to review the issue of celibacy, I think it would do so for cultural reasons (as in the East), not so much as a universal option.

“For the moment, I am in favor of maintaining celibacy, with all its pros and cons, because we have ten centuries of good experiences rather than failures. What happens is that the scandals have an immediate impact. Tradition has weight and validity. Catholic ministers chose celibacy little by little. Up until 1100, some chose it and some did not. After, the East followed the tradition of non-celibacy as personal choice, while the West went the opposite way. It is a matter of discipline, not of faith. It can change. Personally, it never crossed my mind to marry. But there are cases. Look at the case of the Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo. He’s a brilliant guy. But as a bishop, he had a fall and resigned from the diocese. This decision was honest. Sometimes we see priests fall into this.”

Catholic peers and MPs have written to Pope Francis asking him to consider permitting bishops in the United Kingdom to ordain married men as priests.

The parliamentarians, led by Rob Flello MP and Lord Alton of Liverpool argue in their letter that it is anomalous that married Anglican priests can be received into the Catholic Church and ordained as Catholic priests but married Catholic men cannot do the same.

The 21 parliamentarians from all political parties suggest that “if the celibacy rule were relaxed, there would be many others who would seek ordination bringing great gifts to the priesthood.”

The signatories also reiterate that celibacy should be retained for bishops in order to indicate the “continuing high regard we have for those who are able to live a genuinely celibate life.”

Mr. Henry Earl of Lexington, Kentucky, likes to drink. He likes to drink in public, and apparently he is also fond of getting arrested for public intoxication. Henry is perhaps the only person on Earth with his own Wikipedia page dedicated simply to his love of getting arrested for drinking in public, and with good reason; if anyone in history, let alone anyone currently living, has been arrested even half as many times a Henry, we’d love to hear about it.

Here’s all you need to know about Henry (aside from the above mugshot collage): in 2008, it was reported that he had been arrested for the 1000th time since 1992. The judge in the case heard about it, and handed down a thousand-day jail sentence, apparently just to be a smart-ass. It may very well have been his thousandth arrest since 1992â€"but whoever was doing the reporting failed to mention whether he had been arrested before 1992.

Website The Smoking Gun discovered that he had beenâ€"a lot. Beginning in 1970. And they discovered that, in fact, his 1000th arrest had occurred in 2002, six full years earlierâ€"and that his current count was somewhere over 1,300.

Henry has currently spent roughly twice as much of his life in jail as he has out of it; as of this writing, his last arrest was a few months ago. We suppose there’s something to be said for sticking with what you know. -- http://listverse.com/

Bible Study / Re: Iraqi Catholics celebrate Easter

Iraqi officials have made efforts to secure churches since the violence of 2010.

High blast walls topped with netting and barbed wire surrounded the St. Joseph Church in Baghdad in the middle-class district of Karradeh. Blue-khaki clad Iraqi police guarded roads surrounding the church and checked papers of passers-by as worshipers filtered inside.

Four Iraqi Christian volunteers, two men and two women, stood at the church entrance to double-check who was coming in.

White-robed church volunteers marched down the church aisle behind Father Sirop, who chanted and waved thickly-scented incense that wafted through the building. The white-painted interior was adorned with three ornate chandeliers and a series of simple paintings illustrating the life of Christ.

Worshipers stood for lengthy passages of Sirop's mass, at one point bursting into applause when he told them, "Celebrate! You are Christians!"

Since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion, Iraqi Christians have suffered repeated attacks by Islamic militants. Hundreds of thousands have left the country, with church officials estimating their communities have at least halved.

The worst attack was at Baghdad's soaring Our Lady of Salvation church in October 2010. It killed more than 50 worshipers and wounded scores more.
More broadly, decades of immigration have shrunken the size of Christian communities throughout the Middle East, with most leaving for better opportunities and to join families abroad.

Other Christians in the region no longer feel comfortable among majority-Muslim communities that many believe have become more outwardly pious and politically Islamist over the decades.

They included Iraqi Christian worshiper Yousef's son, who moved to live with relatives in Arizona last year. Yousef said she was arranging for her other daughter and son to immigrate.

"There's still fear here, and there's no stability in this country," she said.

At the St. Joseph Chaldean Church in Baghdad, some 200 worshipers stood and sat during parts of the Easter mass led by Father Saad Sirop.

"We pray for love and peace to spread through the world," said worshiper Fatin Yousef, 49. Like most worshippers she arrived have dressed immaculately for mass, her hair tumbling in salon-created curls, wearing a tidy black skirt, low-heeled pumps and a striped shirt. "We hope Pope Francis will help make it better for Christians in Iraq."

There are an estimated 400,000 to 600,000 Christians in Iraq, with most belonging to ancient eastern churches. There has been no census in Iraq for 16 years, making precise figures difficult to obtain.

An estimated two-thirds of Iraq's Christians are Catholics of the Chaldean church and the smaller Assyrian Catholic church. Worshipers of both churches chant in versions of ancient Aramaic, the language that Jesus spoke, although the dialects would be mutually unintelligible.

BAGHDAD (AP) â€" Iraq's Catholic Christians flocked to churches to celebrate Easter Sunday, praying, singing and rejoicing in the resurrection of Christ behind high blast walls and tight security cordons.

It was the first Easter since the election of Pope Francis in Rome, and worshipers said they hoped their new spiritual leader would help strengthen their tiny community that has shrunk under the joint pressures of militant attacks and economic hardships.

Tacitus was the Roman equivalent of The History Channel and National Geographic all rolled into one brainy, cynical guy. Over a stupefying number of books, his Annals describe life under Tiberius, Nero and other lunatics, while also dealing with day-to-day existence in Rome. Significantly, that includes the period surrounding the Great Fire. For those of you who hate clicking on links, the important bit goes:

“Nero fastened the guilt and inflicted the most exquisite tortures on a class hated for their abominations, called Christians by the populace. Christus, from whom the name had its origin, suffered the extreme penalty during the reign of Tiberius at the hands of one of our procurators, Pontius Pilatus.”

That’s the first reliable account of the crucifixion in history. Although he doesn’t cite his source, Tacitus had access to a heck-load of official documents and almost always noted when he was using hearsay. Since everyone but the most-insane of scholars accept this passage as genuine, it establishes the crucifixion as a historical eventâ€"one widely known even by A.D. 64. Furthermore, recently physical evidence was found proving the existence and presence of Pilate just where the Gospels say he was. -- http://listverse.com/

John Goddard - The Modern Age Indiana Jones

At the age of 15 John Goddard overheard one of his parents' friends talking about how he regretted all of the things that he wanted to do but had never actually gotten around to doing. John told himself at that moment that he didn't want to live a life full of regrets, so he sat down to write a list of 127 things that he wanted to do in life.

These included reading the works of Shakespeare, climbing the world's tallest peaks, running a 5-minute mile, and many more. Today, Goddard is famous for having checked most of the items off of his life list, and living an incredibly adventurous life in the process.

Here are some of the 127 items on John Goddard's life list:

Dad beats toddler for dirtying his car

This video of a young girl being viciously beaten by her father just because she dirtied his car has sparked outcry and raised a debate as to whether a child deserved to be punished so harshly.

According to online news reports, the incident -- which took place in China -- started because the girl had messed up the interior of her father's car.

He can be seen repeatedly hitting her in the video while inspecting his car. He also pushed her to the ground while grabbing her head.

However, the child nevertheless runs back to her father each time.

One netizen commented, "The way she keeps running back to her dad and reaching for his hand is heartbreaking. He's all she's got out there in the big world and he beats her away every time."

Some have also criticised those who were seen standing by and doing nothing to stop the beating, including the one who recorded this clip. -- http://www.asiaone.com/

TWO people in China have died after being infected with H7N9 avian influenza - a sub-type that had not previously been transmitted to humans - the government said.

An 87-year-old man in Shanghai fell ill on February 19 and died on March 4, while a man aged 27 in the city got sick on February 27 and died on March 10, the National Health and Family Planning Commission said on its website.

A 35-year-old woman in the eastern province of Anhui became ill on March 9 and was in critical condition, it said.

All three initially suffered fever and coughs but later developed severe pneumonia and problems with breathing, according to the announcement.

The three cases were confirmed on Saturday to be infections with the H7N9 sub-strain after the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Preservation had separated it from body samples the day before, the commission said.

The route of infection remained unknown although nothing unusual was detected among 88 people close to the victims, the commission said.

The H7N9 strain had not been transmitted to humans before, it added.

In a separate release, the commission said there were currently no vaccines against H7N9.

It also explained that the delay in announcing the results was because it took time to determine the cause of the illnesses.

China is considered one of the nations most at risk from bird flu because it has the world's biggest poultry population and many chickens in rural areas are kept close to humans.

China has in the past been accused of covering up the extent of bird flu outbreaks, exacerbating fears when new cases are reported.

The World Health Organisation says more than 360 confirmed human deaths from the H5N1 strain of avian influenza have been reported to it globally from 2003 until March 12 this year.

It says other sub-types have infected humans, including H7N7 and H9N2, and some of these infections led to deaths.
