Theft, robbery top crimes in Bohol

March 31, 2013 10:41 am

TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol, March 30 — Theft and robbery cases consistently topped the crime statistics in the city prompting the authorities to call for a multi-sectoral approach to maintain peace and order in the province.

In just a month, the Bohol Police Provincial Office (BPPO) recorded a crime volume of 177 of which 51.4 percent or 51 incidents were theft.

The higher incidence of theft and robbery compared to other crimes like in the nationwide trend had been linked to social problems (like poverty and drugs), which are now given attention by the different government agencies.

The total crime volume, however, was lower than the 272 recorded in the same period last year.

Theft, which also topped last year’s crime statistics, reached 139 in February last year; followed by robbery with 49 incidents but dropped to 36 incidents in the same period this year or 36.28 percent of the total volume.

Cases of physical injuries also dropped to 16 or 16.13 percent as against the 21 recorded in February last year.

Fourth on the list of crimes, carnapping increased to 10 cases this year from eight cases recorded last year of an appreciation of 10.8 percent to the total crime volume.

Homicide also increased from seven incidents in February last year to nine at the same period this year.

Murder, on the 6th spot, decreased from six incidents in February last year to five this time.

Index crimes decreased from 235 in February 2012 to 127 this year; while non-index crimes increased from 37 to 50 incidents.

In behalf of Police Provincial Director Constantino Barot Jr., Police Chief Inspector George Caña—operations division chief of BPPO—reported this to the Provincial Peace and Order Council (PPOC) meeting on March 13 in the town of Trinidad.

Caña attributed the 35-percent reduction in the crime volume to the Comelec checkpoints jointly undertaken with the local police and increased police visibility in time of the upcoming elections.

However, Caña noted the consistent increase of non-index crimes from 29 cases in December last year to 34 in January and 50 in February.

Governor Edgar Chatto and Barot had earlier explained that increase of index crimes indicated more proactive accomplishment wherein the cops go out of the police station and pursue criminals before crimes happen.

In the drive against illegal drugs in February, the police conducted two operations which resulted to the arrest of two suspects and filing of two cases in court. During the operations, authorities confiscated a total of one gram of shabu and other illegal drug paraphernalia.

In the campaign against private armed groups and loose firearms, the BPPO reported 36 operations conducted last month resulting to the arrest of 11 persons and filing of nine cases in court. In the operations, authorities seized a total of 41 firearms—23 high-powered and 18 low-powered.

The accomplishment included the arrest of two armed men in Barangay Alegria, Catigbian who were among the six suspects in the bombing of the tower base of NGCP in the past year.

Also in the month of February, the police served 31 warrants of arrest where seven of them voluntarily surrendered.

The police also considered among the top accomplishment, the re-arrest of Exequiel Aniscal—an escapee of Bohol District Jail—in an operation in Misamis Oriental.(PNA)
