Suspect used aliases to lure victims
CEBU CITY, Philippines â€" Like his favorite disc jockey “Inday Misyel†of Energy FM, Julius Cotton, the “textmate†accused of murdering factory worker Emily Nuñeza, used several voices and aliases to victimize his targets.
One of the witnesses, who requested anonymity, told Cebu Daily News that Coton used the aliases Michael, Reggie and Jerome when calling the “Hi Pangga,†an on-air dating program at Energy FM, in order to lure his victims.
The witness said Coton, a native of Aurora, Zambonga del Sur who temporarily resided in Barangay (village) Cabangcalan, would receive phone calls even at dawn.
Coton would then leave the house in the morning and return at night.
The witness said Coton may have victimized several women already since he has so many cell phones even if he had no job.
After being arrested, Coton admitted to Mandaue City police that he raped Nuñeza before choking her to death with a nylon rope.
Nuñeza’s remains were found at the Mandaue North Reclamation Area on January 23.
Coton was arrested in a dawn raid in his friend’s home in Sitio (district) Aroma, Barangay (village) Subangdaku on February 2.
Despite his admission, only murder charges will be filed against Coton, according to Inspector George Aniñon, homicide section chief of the Mandaue City Police Office (MCPO).
Aniñon said medico-legal experts who conducted an autopsy of the victim could not prove that she was raped since her remains were in an advanced state of decomposition.
As such, Aniñon said they could not file rape charges against Coton even with his verbal admission given during the police interrogation.
However, he said they received a call from a maid who claimed that she was nearly raped by the suspect.
He said if they can secure the testimony of the maid, along with the suspect's admission which they expect he will recant, they can file rape charges against Coton.
Aniñon said Coton may be using one modus operandi against his victims.
“He (Coton) will trick the victim to exchanging mobile phones so that he can sell the victim's mobile phone. If he likes the victim, he will also rape her. In this case, Coton liked the victim,†Aniñon said in Cebuano.
Despite being convinced that Coton committed the crimes on his own, Aniñon said they will look for additional evidence as ordered by Senior Superintendent Orlando Ualat, Mandaue City Police chief, to determine if he had any accomplices.
The police said Tuesday the delays in the filing of charges against Coton, who is detained at the Mandaue police precinct in Subangdaku, Mandaue City, was due to the unavailability of the witnesses in filing the affidavits.
Aniñon said they will call on the witnesses to file their affidavits after office hours and may be able to file the case on Wednesday.
Aside from the maid, he said they are waiting for other witnesses to come forward. /With reports from Chris Ligan, Jhunnex Napallacan and Jully Venus Cuizon
