Borneo's Pygmy Elephants, Under the Risk of Extinction - Logging and palm oil industry
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Cow with her calf

This is a dwarf among elephants: the pygmy elephant of Borneo is one meter (3 feet) shorter than its mainland Asian elephant counterparts and remarkably tame and passive. Now, these gentle creatures are menaced by the shrinking and fragmentation of their habitat, the forests.

A new research made by the World Wide Fund for Nature has found there are probably no more than 1,000 left, much less than the previous estimate of 1,600 individuals.

Today these elephants survive only in the northeastern part of Borneo Island, in the Malaysian state of Sabah and satellite tracking revealed that the remaining herds prefer jungles on flat lowlands and in river valleys, the same areas hinted by loggers and oil palm plantations. Human activity pushed elephants to unsuitable swamp areas and restricted their ranges to narrow corridors.

"About 40 % of forest cover in the Malaysian state
of Sabah, where most Pygmy elephants live, has been lost to logging, plantations and human settlement over the last four decades," said the Gland, Switzerland-based WWF.

"The areas that these elephants need to survive are the same forests where the most intensive logging in Sabah has taken place because flat lands and valleys incur the lowest costs when extracting timber," said Raymond Alfred, head of WWF-Malaysia's Borneo Species Program.

Malaysian officials accused Western activists of attempting to undermine the palm oil industry by pointing that forest clearing in Malaysia and Indonesia is a menace to wildlife and they claim that most palm oil plantations are found where forests were cleared long ago for crops like rubber.

"The conversion of forests to plantations remains the biggest threat to Sabah's elephants, because no plantation can provide the types and amounts of food necessary to sustain breeding populations of elephants," WWF researchers signaled.
"Sabah has lost 40 % of its forests due to human settlement and plantation creation in the last 40 years".

The research revealed that some of the elephants were foraging five times more than normally due to the human impact. A herd of up to 45 elephants normally moves up to 1.2 miles (2 km) a day. But now they can move 3.9 miles (6.4 km) in just one day.

The loss of habitat makes them more prone to contact with people and their crops, triggering conflict with humans which end with the capture or poisoning of these little Dumbos.

"Until recently, it was believed Borneo pygmy elephants were descendants of a domesticated herd abandoned on the island by the Sultan of Sulu in the 17th century," WWF said.

Comparison between the African, Asian and pygmy elephants

But a 2003 DNA analysis revealed they were a distinct subspecies of Asian elephants, isolated from the mainland populations 300,000 years ago, a fact that triggered a new effort to conserve them.

The pygmy elephant is not included in the World Conservation Union's Red List of Threatened Species, which classifies about 40,000 species according to their risk of extinction, even if in 1996 the Asian elephant was declared "endangered."
"An initiative aimed at conserving 240,000 square kilometers (92,650 square miles) of rain forest straddling the border between Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia should ensure that most herds will have a home in the long term." said Alfred.
"Currently, it isn't possible to say we are in a position to control the species. For now, giving them more space is the most important thing," said Ajay Desai, a species specialist with the conservation union.

This subspecies differs from other Asian elephants by being more rotund, having straighter tusks, a longer tail, a shorter trunk and bigger ears.

Still, these pygmy elephants can ingest up to 150 kilograms (330 pounds) of vegetation daily, from palms to grasses and wild bananas. One of their delicacies is the large thorny durian fruit, which smells the worst in the world. These elephants often roll the entire fruit in mud so they can swallow it with spikes and all. This way the seeds pass unaffected through the elephant's gut and the animal further disperses the tree. This is just one of the elephant's ecological roles.

How to Treat Shyness - The disease that's eating you alive
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

You're at a party…she's looking at you. Oh, man, she's perfect! Do it right now. But, no, I need another drink. Ups, you have a pimple behind the ear... And you don’t wear the best shirt... And till you think more, that ugly toad has already picked up the chick and left the party with her.

If it’s of any comfort to you, then know that 40 % of the guys and girls are affected by this…‘issue’. And if you don’t work it out, unhappiness could be your life sentence. The good news is that shyness can be overcome by slowly engaging in new social situations, as it seems to be not very hardwired in our brains.

"I had lots of friends, but I had no dates," said Bernardo Carducci, the director of the Indiana University Southeast Shyness Research Institute, one of the world's foremost experts in shyness, recalling his own battle with shyness when he was young. "Despite beliefs to the contrary, shyness is not completely hardwired. This is because shyness requires a sense of self â€" which develops only after about 18 months of age. It involves feelings of excessive self-consciousness, negative self-evaluation and
negative self-preoccupation," explained Carducci.

"Shy people operate as if thy have a mirror in front of them all the time," he told LiveScience. Still, heredity interferes with this: roughly, 15 % of the individuals are born with an "inhibited temperament".

"And if one identical twin is shy, the other also is likely to be shy. This does not mean that shyness is predetermined by inheritance, or that it cannot be overcome, but simply that some people are born more susceptible to becoming shy than are others," said Jonathan Cheek, a psychologist at Wellesley College in Massachusetts. "In a nutshell, shy people want to be outgoing and friendly, but can't seem to figure out how to do it," said Carducci.

Shy people are hard to "warm up" in new social situations, mainly because they are too self-conscious. "They'll go to a social function, but if they're not comfortable within 10 minutes, they'll turn and they'll run," Carducci said. These people can look deceptively social and friendly in their "limited comfort zone", but they tend to repeat over and over again the same actions inside the same limited group, avoiding exposure to new social situations. "However, that shyness is not related to self-esteem." said Carducci.

These people can be extremely confident in some aspects of their lives, like profession: they can make presentations in front of an audience of hundreds, but a small private conversation with a newly encountered person can turn them extremely anxious.

Experts come with solutions. "One is through relaxation training. People might try imagining themselves in different social situations while taking slow, deep breaths to keep calm," said Cheek. "They can also work to slowly expand their comfort zone," said Carducci.

Volunteering can be a good anti-shyness method. "When you volunteer, [people] don't really care your level of skill; they're just after your time, so there's no critical self-evaluation," he explained.

Shyness must also be controlled step-by-step. For instance, "if a shy man wants to ask a woman he sees at work out on a date, his first goal might be to have a brief conversation with her about some work-related topic. Before doing so, he should practice the conversation with a friend or a counselor. Then the second time the shy guy speaks to the woman, he could talk about something a bit more personal, until eventually, he feels comfortable asking her out on a date," said Cheek.

Shy people do not understand in most cases "they need not take all the responsibility for any failure they might encounter. Sometimes another person is unresponsive for reasons that have nothing to do with the shy person." said Cheek.

In the end, not all the boys or girls are single and available. Likely, the best aren’t.

The Breed of Double-Nosed Dogs - In the Andes
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor -Softpedia

You may have read about animals and humans with two heads or more than four legs. But all these occurrences were determined by developmental impairments, and if those individuals survived, they usually were either sterile or had normal offspring.

But what about when such an oddity is genetic? And can be transmitted from generation to generation? This is the case of the Andean double
nosed dogs. "This breed could be used for sniffing out mines or narcotics because they have an enhanced sense of smell.", said explorer Colonel John Blashford-Snell, chairman of the Scientific Exploration Society, who encountered this rare breed of Double-Nosed Andean tiger hound on a recent trip to Bolivia.

He first met a Double-Nosed Andean tiger hound called Bella in 2005 in the area near Ojaki. "While we were there, sitting by the fire one night, I saw an extraordinary-looking dog that appeared to have two noses. I was sober at the time, and then I remembered the story that the legendary explorer Colonel Percy Fawcett came back with in 1913 of seeing such strange dogs in the Amazon jungle. Nobody believed him, they laughed him out of court.", Blashford-Snell told Radio 4.

On a second trip in the area, who lasted from May to July 2007, the explorer found Xingu, the son of the double nosed bitch called Bella. Xingu had just had a litter of puppies with a normal one nosed bitch, but both double-nosed pups from the litter died three days after birth, while the two normal nosed offspring survived.

A veterinary expert from the expeditionary group investigated Xingu to see if it possessed a cleft palate, but the dog had a normal fused palate.

"There is a chance that these dogs came from a breed with double noses that's known in Spain as Pachon Navarro, which were hunting dogs at the time of the Conquistadors. I think it's highly likely some of these were taken to South America and they continued to breed. They're good hunting dogs." said Blashford-Snell.

"Xingu was quite an aggressive little chap who stood about 16 inches (40 cm) in height and loved salt biscuits but wasn't a terribly handsome dog. Other dogs snarl at Xingu, because they can sense he's different. He's the smallest dog there but he sees the other dogs off. He's very intelligent and with a wonderful sense of smell, as you might think. The Bolivian Army came and took DNA samples because they're interested in the breed. He's not the only dog like this, there are others in the area.", he added.

Top 10 Secrets of the Lucky People - According to psychologists you should be lucky, too
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Everybody says that health is the most important thing. But a little bit of luck could do more. Many victims of earthquakes or airplane crashes can be very healthy, indeed…

Psychologists say that a certain type of behavior favors luck. Others say that luck is by the side of those who take their chances. The next tips are given by psychologists:

1. Imagine that luck is on your side. You have to behave in such a manner as if you expected only good things to happen to you every day, not just from time to time. Optimism is the key.

"If you're convinced that you're a lucky person, you will have a behavior which will determine those around you to be more receptive with your person," said Martin Seligman, Psychology Professor at the University of Pennsylvania.

2. Try to control your negative emotions. Shyness, fury and resentments turn people against us. How to oppress them? First, look for the cause of those emotions, in order to stop
them before they control you. If you succeed, you'll have a better opinion about yourself, you'll be more optimistic and more extroverted.

Change the way you see difficult colleagues: "X is very good at her job, even if she is short-tempered."

3. Stay open for new opportunities. We don't know what will happen, but we can improve our chance by training, putting more trust in people and in the fact that good things will happen to us due to this.

For instance, some do not share their ideas with their workmates fearing that their ideas will be stolen. But if you keep amazing ideas just for yourself, they won't be good for anybody. It is honest people that are actually appreciated.

4. Manage expectations. Set clear and realistic goals with your colleagues and clients, but be prepared: these can change. If demands overwhelm you and timescales become unrealistic, deal with the situation. Communicate your worries to your team.

5. Do not believe the world is yours. You won't be luckier if you stay home. If you're invited to certain events, enjoy the moments. Exploiting them, you can improve your luck. Be always ready, be prepared to make mistakes.

We will gain more by learning than if we stay isolated or we are not interested in what's going around.

6. Find an escape. Go to the movies or gym, retreat to the country; shifting your focus brings mental and physical relief. You'll come back with a fresh perspective, ready to tackle your problems.

7. Take charge. Worrying can keep you alert, but wallowing is pointless. Accept what you can't do and get on with what you are capable of. Don't panic when everything seems to have gone wrong. Talk to people. Sharing your concerns with colleagues who've been through the same experiences will offer you insight and coping strategies, decreasing anxiety.

8. Do not envy the others. Those that obsessively compare their life with the others end up being unhappy. For instance, if you're obsessed with the fact that somebody was promoted at the office, you will feel like a loser.

Nothing guarantees that the person is happy. In most cases, promotions bring about more headaches. What's ideal for others is not necessarily for you, too. Just focus on your own goals and desires.

9. The more people you know, the more pleasant and prone to luck you are. Why? Because if we interact with powerful people they can share some information and introduce you to important persons.

Many feel it is complicated to make friendships with such people and prefer staying home and party with close friends. It is actually much easier to keep in touch with such people, through e-mails or postcards sent on certain occasions.

The more people you know, the more opportunities you will have.

10. See the good part of the things. To be lucky, you should look at the past from a positive angle and at the present with optimism. People that pretend they're lucky remember more often the good experiences in their life than the bad ones.

If something bad happens to them, they compare it with their worst situation from which they managed to come out winning.

Why Do Women Have Three Times More Headaches Than Men Do? - The CSD, not a brain blood vessel
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Yeah, the same excuse, she's got a head ache... which will disappear anyway after she has sex... but not with you ...Anyhow, she is three times more likely than you to have a migraine (but you're xxx times more likely to desire sex...). About 18-25 % of the women experience severe headaches, often accompanied by nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and aura, being one of the most common disabling conditions affecting women around the globe.

But why are women much more exposed to this? An UCLA team believes that women could have a faster trigger than men for turning
on the brain waves causing the migraines. In this case, a new target for migraine treatment should be taken into consideration.

The UCLA team employed a mouse model to find a big difference between males and females concerning the cortical spreading depression (CSD), which seems to be the main factor provoking migraines. Memantine, a drug that blocks CSD waves, has been found to be effective against migraines.

"Migraines were once thought to be caused primarily by constriction and dilation of blood vessels. Now, thanks to various neuroimaging techniques, it has been shown that migraines may begin as a problem of brain excitability. Patients with migraines show cortical spreading depression, which is characterized by dramatic waves of activity that spread across the surface of the brain. CSD may in turn trigger not only the pain of migraine but the visual symptoms, nausea, dizziness and difficulty concentrating so common in migraine patients." said co-author Dr. Andrew Charles, director of the Headache Research and Treatment Program in the UCLA Department of Neurology.

Imaging techniques enabled the researchers to visualize the start and spread of CSD in anesthetized male and female mice. Female mice have a much lower threshold for CSD compared to males, thus they got migraines much easier than the males do. "The results were very clear. The strength of the stimulus required to trigger CSD in males was up to two or three times higher than that required to trigger the response in females. A variety of factors may reduce the CSD threshold in both sexes, making them more susceptible to migraines â€" these include genes, hormones and environmental triggers such as stress, diet, changes in sleep patterns and a host of others." said Charles.

"While it is known that migraines in females fluctuate with the menstrual cycle and are more frequent during the menstrual period, the study results appear to be independent of a specific phase of the cycle. We didn't monitor the estrous cycle in the female mice, so it's likely we sampled from different estrous phases in different animals. Yet we still found a consistent difference in the CSD threshold between males and females. Our results suggest that the female brain has an intrinsic excitability that predisposes them to migraine that may not be simply linked to a specific phase of the menstrual cycle.", he added.

"These results are exciting, because they may represent a model for understanding the mechanisms underlying the increased prevalence of migraine in women. In addition, they add to growing evidence that CSD is a key target for the development of new migraine treatments."

The same team showed that memantine (commercialized as Namenda) â€" currently employed against Alzheimer’s disease â€" hampers CSD and seems to be very effective in the case of some chronic migraine.

From 54 subjects who received memantine for at least two months, about 36 reported a significant decrease in the estimated headache frequency. Other medications didn’t work in their case.

And a Man sat alone, drenched deep in sadness. And all the animals drew near to him and said, "We do not like to see you so sad. Ask us for whatever you wish and you shall have it." The Man said, "I want to have good sight." The vulture replied, "You shall have mine." The Man said, "I want to be strong." The jaguar said, "You shall be strong like me." Then the Man said, "I long to know the secrets of the earth." The serpent replied, "I will show them to you." And so it went with all the animals. And when the Man had all the gifts that they could give, he left. Then the owl said to the other animals, "Now the Man knows much, he'll be able to do many things. Suddenly I am afraid." The deer said, "The Man has all that he needs. Now his sadness will stop." But the owl replied, "No. I saw a hole in the Man, deep like a hunger he will never fill. It is what makes him sad and what makes him want. He will go on taking and taking, until one day the World will say, 'I am no more and I have nothing left to give.'"

Meet the New Tallest Living Human on the Planet: 2.57m (8ft 5in)! - The Ukrainian Leonid Stadnyk
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Stadnyk with his mother

Bye bye, Bao! The previous holder of the title "The tallest living man", a Chinese citizen of Mongolian ethnic root, Bao Xishun, with his 2.36m (7ft 9in) height, is a dwarf compared to the new record holder.

The Ukrainian man Leonid Stadnyk, 37, has been recognized as the world's tallest living person by the Guinness Book of Records. Stadnyk was measured to have 2.57m (8ft 5in) in height. The difference in height between him and the
Chinese is quite notable: 22cm (8in)!

Stadnyk is a former veterinarian from Podolyantsi (central Ukraine). He started to grow rapidly at the age of 14, when a brain operation reportedly turned on his pituitary gland. Bao had just overtaken in 2006 a Tunisian man, Radhouane Charbib, but with just 2mm difference. The Ukrainian has claimed the title for the world's tallest man before, but his record was not checked as he rejected several times to be measured by the Guinness Book of Records.

His parents are quite short: his father is 1.73m (5ft 8in) tall and his mother 1.52m (5ft). He grew in a tiny village 209km (130 miles) west of the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, and as a child, Stadnyk was rather short.

His teenage brain operation was meant to relieve hydrocephalus, an overaccumulation of liquid in the brain, and following that, he experienced the growth spurt. When he took his vet license and started working at a clinic an hour away, Stadnyk was already 2.03m (6ft 8in) tall.

Stadnyk with the president of Ukraine, Iuscenko

His bike remained too small for him and he had to start taking the bus. After a while, he was too tall for the bus, and he had to go to work using the family's horse-drawn cart. Stadnyk had to give up his job six years ago, after his feet were frostbitten due to the fact that he did not have proper shoes for his size 64 feet.

Now his occupation is farming (livestock and vegetables) on the family farm in Podolyantsi. Still, Stadnyk is 15cm (6in) shorter than the tallest man ever: Robert Wadlow from Illinois (US), which was 2.72m (8ft 11in) tall when he died, in 1940.

The Phalic Shrine: Thai Temple of the Penises - In Bangkok
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Lingams

There are many kinds of tourists going to Thailand. Some go for the sunny beaches, others for the culture of the country... Did you believe the latter? Hmm, let's face it, old jerks and pedophiles, you go there for the (ow, I was going to say ‘f**king’) sexual tourism...

But amongst the shrines dotting the landscape around Bangkok, there is one of the less known tourist attractions in Thailand: behind the Nai Lert Park Hotel (formerly The Hilton), the strange Chao Mae Tuptim ("Pomegranate" or "Blood Orange") Shrine is located.

Thailand is a predominantly Buddhist country, with Buddhist temples and Buddha images, but there are also numerous small and large spirit houses and shrines to Hindu Gods and animist deities.

Lingams

The traditional offerings in a Hindu shrine are white jasmine flowers, incense sticks and both pink and white lotus flowers. But if you look closely (or not quite), some of the offerings in the Chao Mae Tuptim Shrine, dedicated to fertility and good luck, do not match this reality. In fact, you could say that sexual tourism has adopted here another dimension: while stepping through this shrine, you will have the feeling of walking through a forest of giant penises.

This is the lingams’ (phallus symbols) shrine. There is a countless number of lingams in the Chao Mae Tuptim Shrine, some a few meters long. Many of the wooden lingams are very brightly colored, predominantly in red.

"The most powerful sexual rite, of re-integration, requires intercourse with the female partner when she is menstruating, and her 'red' sexual energy is at its peak. For these reasons, the representations in the art of the female counterpart, or initiator, are usually colored red," explains Philip Rawson, an expert of erotic imagery of Tantric beliefs within Hinduism and Buddhism, in his book "Tantra: The Indian Cult of Ecstasy".

There are also other types of offerings in the shrine

The story says that a woman came to this shrine praying to become pregnant. It seems that her wish was accomplished and after the baby was born, she turned back with an offering of an oversized penis.

The news quickly spread about the fertility shrine and many people began coming here with their own offerings of giant penises.

The shrine is not found in any touristic ad or catalogue, as most likely, the 'exhibits' are not openly acceptable for the Thai society.

Jokes and Humor / Miss Beatrice
August 10, 2007, 09:51:01 PM
Miss Beatrice, the church organist, was in her eighties and had never been married. She was admired for her sweetness and kindness to all. One afternoon the pastor came to call on her and she showed him into her quaint sitting room. She invited him to have a seat while she prepared tea. As he sat facing her old Hammond organ, the young minister noticed a cut-glass bowl sitting on top of it. The bowl was filled with water, and in the water floated, of all things, a condom! When she returned with tea and scones, they began to chat. The pastor tried to stifle his curiosity about the bowl of water and its strange floater, but soon it got the better of him and  he could no longer resist. "Miss Beatrice", he said, "I wonder if you would tell me about this?" pointing to the bowl. "Oh, yes," she replied, "Isn't it wonderful? I was walking through the Park a few months ago and I found this little package on the ground. The directions said to place it on the organ, keep it wet and that it would prevent the spread of disease. Do you know I haven't had the flu all winter."

Facts and Trivia / What's the 'Radiocarbon Dating'?

What's the 'Radiocarbon Dating'? - Radioactive carbon isotopes used for estimating the age
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

This is the most widely employed method of absolute dating: the radioactive isotope of the carbon, 14C. In the '40s, William Libby discovered that, with the passing of time, the 14C present in all dead organisms breaks down at a rhythm that can be measured. This finding found immediate applications in the newly born modern archeology.

The experts could date bones, wood, coal and other organic remains up to 50,000 years old, with an error edge of 80 years. But the radiocarbon method cannot
date metal, stone or fossils in which organic matter has been replaced by minerals.

The element carbon has three isotopes: 12C, 13C and 14C. Opposite to the first two, 14C is radioactive and thus unstable. This means that it will break down, emanating very weak radiations. During photosynthesis, plants absorb from the air carbon dioxide, which enters in the composition of the organic chemicals resulted through the process. These biochemicals will form plant tissues that will feed plant-eating animals.

While plants and animals are alive, the proportion of the C14 in their tissue is the same with that from the atmosphere, extremely low. But when they die, concentration is constantly decreasing, due to the radioactive break down, which occurs at a known pace (50 % in 5,730 years). This allows estimating the time occurred from the death of the organism.

14C would have long ago disappeared from Earth in the absence of unremitting cosmic ray impacts on nitrogen in the Earth's atmosphere, which break down nitrogen to 14C.

The dating offered by the radioactive carbon is not extremely precise in years, because the level of atmospheric 14C has not been constant in time.

The concentrations of 14C can also be changed by variations in the cosmic ray intensity or Earth's magnetosphere induced by solar storms. There are also huge stores of carbon in organic matter, the ocean, ocean sediments, and sedimentary rocks. Climate changes can sometimes impair the carbon flow between these deposits and the atmosphere.

Human activities, and especially atomic bomb tests have multiplied the amount of 14C found in the atmosphere. Large quantities of CO2 from ancient fuels (which are depleted of 14C) decreased the percentage of 14C in the atmosphere.

Give the Piss-Screen a Chance and It Might Save Your Life - Playing a pissing game determines whether you're drunk or sober
By: Alex Vochin, Technology Editor - Softpedia

A player exercising his skills in front of the Piss-Screen

Drinking and driving is one of the most important causes of car accidents around the world, the consequences of this type of reckless behavior being often quite tragic. However, even if a real solution to this problem is nowhere in sight, a team from the Frankfurt division of SAATCHI & SAATCHI has come up with a very innovative and interesting way of trying to convince people to take a cab home rather than drive while intoxicated, namely the Piss-Screen.

Developed at the request of the Frankfurt Taxi Service, the Piss-Screen is a system that allows the person using the toilet to play a driving game. It features a pressure-sensitive inlay set within urinals, which allows users to play while they pee, the game itself being displayed on a special screen set above each of the urinals. The game starts as soon as somebody starts using the respective urinal and the player is actually capable of controlling the car's movements whilst relieving himself by simply peeing in the direction in which the car should move.

According to the team that developed this interesting system, the overall design of the driving game resembles quite a lot that of the famous "Need for Speed" franchise, requiring relatively quick reactions. Quite obviously, as the level of alcohol in the body rises, the response speed seriously diminishes, thus proving the player that he's not just "tipsy" but seriously intoxicated.

Various screenshots of the Piss-Screen in action

Regardless of how well the driver managed to steer his ... "vehicle", the game inevitably ends with a shocking crash-sequence, leaving the viewer with little doubt as to the repercussions of driving while drunk. Then, the player is strongly advised to leave his car be and call the Taxi service.

This very interesting anti-drinking and driving system is already at work in several bars around Frankfurt and should you want to find out more about it, as well as view a few very interesting clips regarding the way it's supposed to work and how it was manufactured, take a look at the Piss-Screen webpage.

We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there. That's why we thought it would be a good idea to create an email address for you to help us a little in finding gadgets we missed. Interesting links are bound to be posted with recognition going mainly to those who submit.

New Anti Drunk-Driving Car - Nissan technology
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Like always on Saturday night, you're dead drunk and since you’re such a brave person, you will prove that you can drive home safely on your own (by the way, who would dare try to face your punches and curses just to grab your keys?).

Well, Nissan has found a solution to your problem now. If not for the sake of the others’ safety, at least at for the sake of you keeping your driving license. An array of technologies will detect a driver's state of sobriety. They gauge alcohol expelled by the body and a driver's level of drowsiness, assessing driving behavior for signs of inattentiveness. The Nissan Fuga (Infiniti M45) model will incorporate such capabilities.

If the driver is detected as drunk, the system activates a set of preventive measures including the immobilization of the vehicle.

The system contains:

1. A hi-sensitivity alcohol odor sensor incorporated into the transmission shift knob, which can track down the presence of alcohol in the perspiration of the driver's palm as he/she tries to start driving. When the alcohol-amount detected bypasses a threshold, the system automatically blocks the transmission, immobilizing the car. A "drunk driving" voice alert is turned on through the car navigation system.

2. Other alcohol odor sensors are located into the driver's and passenger seats, assessing the alcohol vapors in the air inside the vehicle cabin. When alcohol is found, the system turns on a voice alert and a message alert on the navigation system monitor.

3. A camera fixed on the instrument cluster facing the driver supervises the driver's face, assessing his/her state of consciousness based on the blinking. When signs of drowsiness are detected, the voice and message alert are activated. Moreover, a seat-belt mechanism tightens around the driver to gain his/her immediate attention.

4. Constant monitoring of the driving behavior (sensing if the vehicle is veering out of its driving lane), the system detects signs of inattentiveness in the driver. In the case of such behavior, voice, message and seat-belt alert mechanism are activated.

Nissan has already developed some initiatives for the prevention of drunk driving, like the introduction in June of its "drunk driving" message alert on its navigation system. In July, the company started to test a new on-board breathalyzer system, which immobilizes the car if the driver's breath shows the presence of alcohol over a specified threshold.

Women Prefer Effeminate Men As Husbands - And healthier too
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

We have already understood that a head-shaved tattooed muscle-packed ‘macho’ does not make the ideal husband. But women clearly know it.

A new research has shown that women ‘detect’ the good husband in males with effeminate faces. 400 British subjects, men and women, were put to score digitally altered pictures of male faces presented without any hair, ears, neck, shoulder or clothing visible and transformed to look more masculine or more feminine.

The same male face in two variants, one more masculine and the other more feminine, were presented side by side and the subjects had to select the face they believed showed more particular features like dominance, ambition, wealth, faithfulness, commitment, parenting ability and warmth.

More macho traits (like a square jaw, larger nose and smaller eyes), were scored as more dominant, less faithful, worse parents and having colder, distant personalities than those with more feminine traits (like fuller lips, wide eyes and thinner, more curved eyebrows). "This research shows a high amount of agreement between women about what they see, personality wise, when asked to 'judge a book by its cover'," said lead author Lynda Boothroyd of Durham University in the United Kingdom.

"They may well use that impression of someone to decide whether or not to engage with that person. That decision-making process all depends on what a woman is looking for in a relationship at that time of her life.", added Boothroyd.

more feminine (top left), more masculine (top right), less healthy (bottom left) and more healthy (bottom right)

Another recent study discovered that women who were in the fertile period of their menstrual cycle were attracted by men with a more masculine look when it came to ‘one night stands’; but by more effeminate men when the same women-volunteers were not in the fertile period.

The healthy appearance of the faces in the new research was also a crucial factor in attractiveness. Healthier complexions scored more in the category of desirable personality characteristics. "Our results contradict claims that machismo denotes fitness and disease immunity. Masculinity may buy you dominance but not necessarily tip-top physical condition. Instead, women see a healthy guy as the source of wealth, and fit for family life." said David Perrett of the University of St Andrews in Scotland.

30 Things You Did Not Know about Mosquitoes - Insects from hell
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

These are the strangest females invented by nature. But they do not ruin the life of their own males but ours. Mosquitoes are insects of the Order Diptera (thus related with the flies, even "mosquito" is a Spanish word meaning "little fly"), suborder Nematocera ("with thin antennae") and belong to the Culicidae family.

1. Mosquitoes came into being during the Jurassic Epoch, over 175 million years ago, so dinosaurs did experience the 'mosquito nightmare'...

2. There are over 3,000 varieties of mosquitoes, from the Arctic tundra to the tropical rain forests, and from the sea level to the height of Himalaya. In fact, all that mosquitoes require to remain active are temperatures over 55 ºF (12.7 ºC). Thus, they are practically anywhere, even in the desert oases, even if the highest diversity of species is encountered in wet and warm areas.

3. Most are active at dawn and dusk, sheltering during the day in dense vegetation, houses, farms but for many tropical species they are midday food.

4. Mosquitoes vary in their size: they reach 1.6-12.5 mm (0.5 inch). Fossil mosquitoes were even 5 cm (2 inch) long.

5. Mosquitoes do not bite, they suck. 1,200,000 mosquitoes would be necessary to completely drain the average human of blood. Well, unless you die before, but of irritation.

6. An experiment in the Canadian tundra found that people who bared arms, legs and torsos reported approximately 9,000 bites per minute from swarming, newly hatched mosquitoes. In two hours, an individual could lose 50 % of his blood.

7. Only the female bites and she does this on humans but also on other vertebrates, from elephants to mice and turtles, sucking their blood. This food is necessary for the development of the ovaries and maturing of the eggs. Some species can develop without the female ingesting previously blood, but when the opportunity appears, they will do it (like in some Culex).

A sole blood droplet ensures the growth of hundreds of mosquito eggs.

8. The males do not bite; they eat just plant juices and nectar.

9. The sting of the mosquito may look simple but on microscope it is extremely complicated; it is formed of 6 pieces: two tubes, a salivary one and a feeding one, surrounded by two sharp mandibles and two scalpels with saw-like teeth. All 6 pieces are wrapped in a sheath that protects them on all their length. The sting is implanted into the skin for a few mm till it reaches a minute blood vessel.

10. Mosquitoes possess olfactive and thermic organs onto their hairy pair of antennae and the three pairs of legs that head them to the their victim based on their expelled carbon dioxide, warmth and sweat.

11. Eyes occupy most of a mosquito`s head. These compound-lensed organs deliver infrared images of heat emanated from a body.

12. Male mosquito "ears" have as many sensory cells as
human ears, they help males identify and pursue the females. When a mosquito tracks down the whine of the opposite sex, it begins to synchronize its own pitch to fit that of the potential mate. Males can "relate" to girl frequencies in a second or two. Females take several times longer to synchronize.

13. Mosquitoes can mate in midair, often in just 15 seconds from approaching to fare-thee-well.

14. Mosquitoes can smell their dinner from up to 50 meters (166 ft). Mosquitoes can travel 40 miles (64 km) looking for a meal.

15. To detect you, mosquitoes use the carbon dioxide you exhale. People with high concentrations of steroids or cholesterol on their skin surface attract mosquitoes and this is a genetic trait.

Mosquitoes are also attracted by uric acid present in the sweat and movement. Practicing sports in a mosquito-infested area is a bad idea as increased exhaled carbon dioxide (due to panting) and uric acid (due to sweating) turns you into a mosquitoes' magnet.

16. The blood has the ability to clot, so, through the salivary tube, the mosquito female pumps anti-clotting chemicals that keep the blood fluid, so she can suck it easily. The saliva that remains inside the skin is extremely irritating for the victim, causing an unbearable itch.

17. Do not scratch the bitten place. The best solution is alcohol, which eases the pain.

18. The greatest problem of the mosquito bite is not the itch, but the parasites that mosquitoes, mostly in tropics, can transmit through their saliva. Anopheles mosquitoes transmit malaria, a blood parasite that kills up to 3 million people annually (over one million just in Africa) and infects 300 million people each year on the tropics.

The Aedes mosquitoes are vectors for many viruses like those of the yellow fever, hepatitis or encephalitis. Dengue and West Nile viruses are also transmitted by mosquitoes.
In fact, mosquitoes are considered the animals responsible for the highest number of human deaths worldwide annually. But remember: they do not transmit HIV, as the virus would die in the mosquito`s digestive system.

19. Mosquitoes can fly between the rain droplets and with 1.5-2.5 km (0.9-1.6 mi)/h at most 5 minutes at once with a wing rhythm of 250 beats/seconds! This rhythm determines their buzz and they would like not to generate it; otherwise their presence would be undetectable till they bite.

20. Their step on the victim is so smooth that it cannot be detected. They can even step on spider webs without the spider to feel anything!...

21. They have the rare ability of walking on the water. Only a type of water bug is known to do this (except mosquitoes).

22. In temperate zones, adult females winter in various sheltered places and when the winter is gone, they start feeding with blood and another mosquito generation is on the way.

23. Mosquitoes larvae are aquatic and as little as the water from garbage cans, old tiles, barrels, washbasins, wet basements, bathrooms, kitchens, balconies is enough to ensure their development, and combating the mosquito population in an area can result a tough task. As the larvae breathe oxygen from the air, they are not affected by the water quality.

24. The mosquito eggs are very resistant to drought and cold, being able to resist till five years in cold and dry ground till the next warm rain and in a week, the larvae go out from the eggs.

25. There are other insects from Nematocera that look like mosquitoes, are found also around waters and are completely harmless, as their females do not suck blood and they ingest just plant sap, like midges from Chironomidae, Tipulidae (crane flies) while other diptera that do not look quite like a mosquito, from Simuliidae (black flies), Ceratopogonidae (biting midges), Glossinidae (tsetse flies) families (only some examples) but DO bite for blood and transmit extremely severe parasites, like sleeping sickness and worms that provoke river blindness, filariasis or elephantiasis.

26. The world`s largest statue of a mosquito is a local attraction in Komarno, Manitoba, the Mosquito Capital of Canada. ("Komarno" means in Ukrainian "mosquito"). The steel statue was made in 1984 and has a wingspan of 15 feet (5 m).

27. In 1998, researchers discovered a new mosquito species in the London Underground, evolved from ancestors that flew in when the tunnels were dug 100 years ago. Once bird feeders, they now enjoy a menu of rats, mice and human blood. They do not interbreed with their aboveground counterparts. Their DNA actually varies from one subway line to another.

28. Central America`s so-called Mosquito Coast (a thin strip of land along the Caribbean in Honduras and Nicaragua) is not named after the insect, but after the indigenous Miskito Indians.

29. In Abuja, Nigeria, in 2000 the world`s biggest mosquito net was unveiled, as part of a national campaign against malaria and other insect-borne diseases. Two hundred children fit under it.

30. The best mosquito repellent is DEET, but other solutions are lemon eucalyptus oil (traded as Repel) and soybean oil, citronella, cedar, peppermint, lemongrass and geranium.

Mosquito traps can also offer protection. They emit mosquitoes attracting factors, like carbon dioxide, heat, moisture and others, trapping or destroying mosquitoes. When located in good breeding spots, they can knock mosquito populations down.

This Man Has Not Been Sleeping for 34 Years! - Following a fever bout!
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

From the employer’s perpective, this is the ideal employee: the one who never sleeps. Eventually, he doesn’t even pee or poop. Well, Thai Ngoc, a 64-year-old Vietnamese man, does pee and poop, but does not sleep. He is famous for being awake for 33 years or 11,700 nights, as informed by the Vietnamese news organization Thanh Nien.

At the moment, Ngoc does not display any apparent health effect (of course, except for the fact that he cannot sleep). The most amazing
fact is that the man's brain seems not to be affected by his condition, and the individual is mentally normal and carries 100kg of pig feed down a 4km road. "I don't know whether the insomnia has impacted my health or not. But I'm still healthy and can farm normally like others," said Ngoc.

"My husband used to sleep well, but these days, even liquor cannot put him down. When Ngoc went to Da Nang for a medical examination, doctors gave him a clean bill of health, except a minor decline in liver function." explained his wife.

Ngoc currently has his 5ha farm at the foot of a mountain and he is busy farming and taking care of pigs and chickens all day long. He lives with his six children at their house in Que Trung. The sleepless nights allow Ngoc to do extra farm work or guard his farm at night against thieves. "I used three months of sleepless nights to dig two large ponds to raise fish.", said Ngoc.

His condition installed following a bout of fever experienced by Ngoc in 1973. Still, in April, 2007, Ngoc reported that he was starting to feel grumpy due to the lack of sleep. This condition is extremely odd as animal experiments showed that they die sooner of sleep deprivation than they do from lack of food, as sleep is an imperative metabolic need.

During sleep, the body enters in a predominantly anabolic phase, when it develops, grows, heals and builds muscle; the immune system is at its peak (that's why, when we’re ill, we wake up without the cold). While sleeping, many organs, and especially the brain, re-fuel (in the case of the brain with glucose).

Now, many substances (including hormones) reach the peak of their secretion, the nervous synapses are rebuilt, and the long-term memories are strengthened. The growth hormone (somatotrope) acts only during the night, determining the growth of young people. Only during the sleep do the tissues assimilate proteins and fat (so, avoid eating fat-rich food before a good night’s sleep!).

Petition Letter

August 1, 2007

Her Excellency Gloria Macapagal Arroyo

President, Republic of the Philippines

Dear Madam President:

First and foremost allow us to commend you for the recent economic achievements of our country under your administration i.e., the spectacular 6.9% growth rate during 1st Quarter of 2007 which is highest in 17 years, the stock market reaching an all-time high, the peso at 7-year high against the US dollar and the multitude of incoming projects you have mentioned recently in your State of the Nation Address (SONA).

We credit you for those achievements, for your sincerity to exert more efforts to guide our country to progress, to marginalize poverty and provide a better nation to every Filipino.

We are one with you in that cause and we will certainly give our support. We will not allow anyone to stand on the way of your programs.  We will serve as catalysts to your initiatives.  More importantly, we will continue to strive on our jobs in order to provide our nation the much-needed dollar inflow that keeps our country afloat.

We are writing to you to raise one of our concerns that affect the interest of more than 8 million OFWs at the expense of helping our country secure an abundant supply of dollar and improve its balance of payments.

We refer to the rather fast-paced appreciation of the peso which significantly hurt OFWs earnings.

Below are the predicaments posing us serious concern:

§         The climb of the peso from 56 to 45 versus US dollar has caused substantial decrease in our peso-equivalent earnings which can be translated much like to a 20% reduction on salaries.  This reduction certainly hurt our family’s budget and the over-all spending power of OFWs;

§         The extent of this reduction on OFWs spending power caused by decreased remittances is magnified even more by the consequent rising of prices of commodities which ironically should have decreased, if not stabilized due to the strengthening of the peso.  Now, not only our families suffer from decreased budget but also from increased prices;

§         Survey says that the increase in total OFW remittances yearly is due to more and better job offers, better salary packages as a result of increased demand for Filipino workers in foreign countries.  We say, partly it is true but a big chunk of that increase is mainly because we have chosen to cut our personal expenses abroad and employ belt-tightening measures in order to send more dollars so that our remittance can cope up with the lower exchange rate;

§         A lot of us now are becoming constrained to give up our jobs and get back to our country because of the declining peso-equivalent of our remittances.  We are concerned that the prospect of massive flight of OFW back home isn’t sustainable in the long run considering our vast number against the small number of jobs generated yearly.  According to World Bank, nearly half of the country’s population still lives on $2 a day.  We don’t want to put our families back into that category by joining into the millions of job hunters for a meager number of low-paying jobs.

§         In short note, our life abroad and the life of our families back home gets harder with the continuing rise of the peso.  Our families have to manage smaller budget against increased prices and we have to work longer hours and cut expenses to be able to remit more dollars.  Our common goal for a shorter timeline of working away from loved ones has no doubt been lengthened.  With the peso hovering around P44-P45 a dollar, it will now take us longer to achieve our plans of saving to build livelihood, if not impossible.

We are aware that your administration is looking into some measures to control the pace of peso appreciation but we are dismayed not to hear of any measures specifically designed to directly benefit us.  What your administration has only done so far was to circulate news of possible relief in the way of offering investment instruments and some news about putting up an OFW bank or other financial institutions that will service OFWs.

Sadly, all of them have been like old songs played by new singers.  Not one of them even comes close to the relief offered to the exporters of goods where your administration through DBP will put up $1Billion stabilization fund.  Besides, those proposed institutions (OFW Bank, Mutual Fund) if only to be run by the hungry capitalists of our society and not by OFWs, appears more as just another machinery designed to squeeze more dollars out of us rather than as instruments to help improve our earning power.

This is no doubt an uncertain time for the rest of 8 million OFWs and the multitude of our families depending on us for support.  Thus, we humbly appeal to you, Your Excellency Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, for a relief to stabilize our earnings.

Our families have enough to suffer from us being detached from them.  From the fear of letting time and distance tear us apart.  From the fear of us coming home one day defeated.  Do not allow those sufferings be compounded by fear of us losing what we have sacrificed for because our dollar earnings is being dwarfed by an unjustifiably fast-paced and unrestrained peso appreciation.

Madam President, it is our strong belief that your administration can do something to help us.  In this light we are respectfully submitting the following proposal for your sincere consideration:

Establishment of a “Special Exchange Rate” exclusively for OFWs

We ask for a fixed 10% premium above the exchange rate prevailing in the market or a flat rate of fifty (50) Pesos to one dollar to be given to legitimate OFW.  This premium or flat rate shall be automatically lifted once the Peso reaches to P50-a-dollar.

As to where the government will source the funds, we propose the following:

§         The government to put up a stabilization fund similar to that conceived for the exporter of goods.  After all, we are exporters of labor that brings significant benefits to the economy and unlike exporter of goods; the government spends only very minimal cost on us, if at all.  If government can shell out some funds to benefit exporter of goods, surely they can do the same for more than 8 million OFWs and nearly 25 million family members (voters!) back home (from a ratio of 3 family members to 1 OFW).

§         The government can also enter into a collective “Forward Contract or Currency Options” with financial institutions in order to shield future dollar remittances against sudden unfavorable peso appreciation while taking advantage of exchange rate movement that favors OFWs.

As to how the government will implement this special rate, we are willing to sit into a committee to draft the implementing guidelines or provide inputs in any means we can.  We believe such is a secondary issue and it won’t take bright minds to formulate controls like imposing a monthly limit of convertible foreign currency (which could be the registered monthly salary of OFW or any reasonable amount that an appropriate committee may formulate; example, average family expenses, etc).

We fully understand that this proposition for special rate may entail costs to the government, which could be material.  But it is our position that these costs surely pales in comparison to the benefits we have hauled to the government in the past and the benefits it will get from us in the future.

We also believe that with political will, the issue of mechanics and implementation can be properly addressed by an appropriate committee assembled for such purpose.

Madam President, when you said with courage and conviction in your recent SONA: “From where I sit, I can tell you: a President can always be as strong as she wants to be.”.  We believed you.  We had faith in you.

Please don’t fail that faith.

Yours faithfully,

OFW Task Force “Special Exchange Rate”

Will We Be Extinct in 12 Million Years? - The theory of the wrong dorsal Milky Way
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

The route of the Solar System in the Milky Way

There are immediate dangers menacing the human civilization, like terrorism and climate change. We may struggle to fight these issues which are in the end caused by the human race. But what can we do against the Universe?

In May 2007, a team led by Mikhail Medvedev at the University of Kansas emitted a novel theory aimed to explain the periodicity
of mass extinctions on Earth, which occur about once every 62 million years. "The motion of the solar system exposes Earth to an onslaught of cosmic rays on a schedule that is synchronized to the mass extinctions.", signaled Adrian Melott, professor of physics and astronomy at KU.

The Milky Way galaxy appears to have a good side and a bad side. The bad aspect of the Milky Way would be its dorsal side. The team says that the leading, dorsal side of the Milky Way emits a shock wave as the galaxy travels through the universe. When the solar system periodically reaches the proximities of the dorsal boundary of the galaxy, about once every 64 million years, it is exposed (and Earth with it) to a huge amount of high-energy radiation induced by the galactic shock wave.

In other words, this periodic irradiation at each 64 million years wipes out many life forms on Earth. The team also informed when we're due for another trip to the wrong side. "We've just passed the mid-plane of the galaxy. We're on the way up and we'll reach a peak in about 10 or 12 million years. That's when the radiation should start getting bad again -- if our idea is right. As for the next die-off, there is plenty of time to prepare," said Melott.

"From what I gathered, the cosmic radiation received at the northernmost point of our oscillation would not be outright deadly. Level of CR would only be a few times higher than normal. What he seems to indicate to me is that over millions of years this is a long term stress on the biosphere which may make other events like volcanic eruptions and asteroid impacts all the more catastrophic." said Medvedev.

"There are some hints that there were episodes of increased diversification following the extinction episodes. Maybe these can be attributed to "good" mutations (thus supporting the CR hypothesis), though other explanations are equally possible." he added.

Plastic Drink Bottles Cause Sexual Issues in Women - From sterility to cancer
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

We live in an era of plastic. All around you is plastic. I bet not 5 minutes go by without you touching something made of plastic. Even your food and drink come wrapped in plastic.

Now a panel of 38 researchers said that Bisphenol A â€" a main ingredient in hard plastics and one of the most common chemicals around us â€" is probably causing reproductive disorders in people. Bisphenol A (BPA) is used in the synthesis of polycarbonate plastic and several types of resins. Polycarbonate plastics are commonly employed in a variety of products including food and drink containers, CDs, DVDs, electrical and electronic equipment, automobiles, sports safety equipment. Resins are utilized as a protective lining in metal food and drink containers
and water supply pipes.

The team reviewed 700 researches just to reach the conclusion that people are regularly exposed to bisphenol A (BPA) levels which are much higher than those found to harm lab animals.

A NIH research has shown that newborn mice exposed to BPA experience uterine damage, connected in women to reproductive diseases and cancers. BPA could imitate the natural female sex hormone, estradiol.

Humans can be directly exposed to BPA through food or drink that has been in contact with material containing BPA. The chemical industry reacted by rejecting the conclusions reached by these studies, claiming that these studies are influenced by ideological conflicts of interest and cited governmental sources sustaining that BPA is safe.

"Two government scientific committees in Europe and Japan recently decided there was insufficient evidence to restrict the compound. Europe's food safety agency decided in January that the data were inconclusive, largely because of metabolic differences between mice and humans, and because it is uncertain that the amounts people are exposed to pose a health threat." reported Los Angeles Times.

"There is essentially no difference in the way that rat or mouse cells respond to BPA and the way that humans respond to it. Though the amount in humans may seem like an incredibly small amount, it causes effects in human cells at the part-per-trillion level," replicated Frederick vorn Saal University of Missouri-Columbia reproductive toxicologist.

"BPA caused reproductive tract damage similar to the anti-miscarriage drug DES (diethylstilbestrol), a synthetic estrogen that was prescribed to pregnant women from the 1940s until the late 1970s. The drug led to "DES daughters," who were born with reproductive defects that caused infertility and cancers." said lead author of the uterine damage study Retha Newbold, of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.

A NIH panel will meet next week to decide if BPA will be included in the category of reproductive toxins. In March, the Los Angeles Times reported that the panel's preliminary BPA report was "written by a consulting firm with financial ties to the chemical industry that has since been fired."

Man Carries the Amputated Arm of His Twin Transplanted on His Chest - The brother got an extralong finger in exchange
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor  - Softpedia

To 'sculpture' your own body usually means going to gym and model your muscles. But for others the meaning may go beyond your imagination.

Ryan and Dave from Phoenix, Arizona, are surely the most unique twins in the world. They do not only share the same DNA, but their bodies also. Literally. After getting tired of piercing, tattoos and implants about three years ago, they went experimenting much 'heavier' surgical modifications.

Ryan carries Dave's entire right arm (both brothers are left handed) amputated at the shoulder and surgically reattached behind his right pectoral muscle.

Dave studied two and a half years in pre-med at Queens University in Kingston and with the help of two practitioners and two assistants he met there and online the brothers accomplished the procedure. It was obvious that no clinic would have done
this.

The surgery was made under local anesthesia, as the brothers did not have the facilities for safe administration of general anesthesia. Using an Ace bandage, the blood was slowly squeezed out of Dave's arm. The arm was tourniquetted as high up on the shoulder as it could be and lidocaine was injected into the exsanguinated veins.

An amputation knife cut the skin and muscles and a bone saw finished the job. Bleeders were ligated and the wound was cleaned up. The arm removal procedure took place in about 40 minutes.

Meanwhile, the other practitioner and his assistant prepared Ryan. Veins and arteries were modeled for the future arm to have a blood supply. Some of the subcutaneous tissue was peeled up to merge as smoothly as possible.

The healing went very well, in a month the transplant and Dave's stump were OK. As the brothers are monozygotic twins (they have the same DNA), there were no rejection problems.

This does not stop here. Ryan carries also an "alien" finger. A center joint of one of Dave's fingers was removed, along with the skin and about one inch (2.5 cm) of overhanging tendon. Ryan's finger was split to the end of the first joint and the extra joint was inserted. Ryan even has feeling in the tip of that finger, as the nerves resulted to be compatible.

When Dave's finger tip was put back on, the lack of tendon made it lose mobility and the finger tends to bang, that's why Dave carries it bandaged. In fact, he's planning to remove the finger altogether, to the wrist.

"That will let us shift the little finger over without much apparent scarring giving us a very realistic three fingered hand." said Dave.

Surprisingly, the brothers have very regular jobs.

"We make a great living in the traditional world. I'm not going to say the name of our company, but to suffice it to say that we're the sixth largest producer of adult entertainment software in North America. The Ferrari Dino 246 that Ryan is leaning on right now is a $50,000 car. That may not seem like a lot of money, but we paid it off in one day. Not all "freaks" are punk kids." Dave told BME.

And for the future?

"We've got some genital work planned that's pretty exciting," said Dave.

The Thunder-Stun KP-002 Taser-Gun

The Thunder-Stun Sends Up to 750,000 Volts Through an Assailant's Body - Plus, it sports a built-in flashlight
By: Alex Vochin, Technology Editor - Softpedia

We live in a very dangerous world, so it's not such a bad idea to have a self-defense device available at hand at all-times. And while some people opt for the "heavy artillery" (namely firearms), most users go for less-lethal devices, as mace sprays and stun guns, which can incapacitate an opponent without actually taking his life, much like the Thunder-Stun you're about to see as follows, a stun-gun which can bring around 750,000 Volts of leverage
to any confrontation.

The device works in a pretty simple manner, really. Thus, it incorporates a battery, as well as a discharge system that delivers between 200,000 and 750,000 Volts, depending on the model. Moreover, it's quite non-lethal, as the manufacturers inform us that its effect is strictly temporary and that it doesn't leave any psychological or physical damage.

The device is quite effective upon the possible aggressors. Thus, it works even through thick layers of clothing and might have various effects depending on the exposure period. Thus, if the assailant comes in contact with the Thunder-Stun for around 0.5 seconds, he/she will experience some pain, muscular contraction and shock. An 1-2 seconds exposure will result in muscle contraction and dazed mental state, while a 2-5 seconds shock will cause loss of balance and muscle control, as well as total mental confusion and disorientation.

The device also provides an enhanced level of security for the user, as it sports a system that prevents accidental discharges. Moreover, it is extremely portable, since it measures around 14 cm x 6 cm x 2.8 cm, at a weight of around 160 grams, and, as a bonus, it comes with a built-in flashlight, so the users will be able to find their way across the dark and dangerous alleys they're cruising in search of a victim for their Thunder-Stun.

The device is not even that expensive, as it is available at various retailers across the US for under $20, which is quite a small price to pay for one's own safety.
