Music and Video / Journey's New Lead Singer is Filipino
December 28, 2007, 12:02:51 PM

Arnel Pineda

Journey's new lead singer is Filipino

By DAVID DIZON
abs-cbnNEWS.com

Here's one for the books. Popular American rock band Journey, who popularized the radio hits "Open Arms" and "Faithfully", has a new lead singer and he's proudly Filipino.

Arnel Pineda, lead singer of local band The Zoo, was chosen by Journey guitarist Neal Schon, keyboardist Jonathan Cain, bassist Ross Valory and drummer Deen Castronovo to replace Journey vocalist Jeff Scott Soto who left the band last June.

In a statement, Pineda said joining the legendary rock band after years of covering their radio hits is a dream come true. “It’s so exciting to sing with one of the best bands in the world. It’ll be a lot of hard work on my part and I’m actually looking forward to the scrutiny I’ll get from the hardcore Journey fans," he said.

He also said he is not out to emulate Journey's most famous lead singer Steve Perry. "I know they’ll expect me to sound exactly like ‘the voice’ (Steve Perry), but that will never happen. I know there's only one Steve Perry in this world," Pineda said.

Pineda's success is no accident. He joined his first band at age 15 and has been singing professionally for the past 25 years. His phenomenal voice also won him the Best Vocalist award at the World Band Explosion in 1987 -- a feat that he repeated the following year.

Pineda has been a veteran of several bands and is a regular in clubs in Makati, Olongapo and Quezon City. His latest band, The Zoo, released its first album "Zoology" under MCA Universal Records last September.

It is Pineda's stint in The Zoo that got him noticed by Journey axeman Schon.

Schon said he was looking for a replacement singer on popular video-sharing site YouTube.com when he discovered videos of Pineda and The Zoo covering Journey songs.

“I was frustrated about not having a singer. So I went on YouTube for a couple of days and just sat on it for hours. I was starting to think I was never going to find anybody. But then I found The Zoo and I watched a bunch of different video clips that they had posted," Schon revealed.

After watching the videos of Pineda covering Open Arms, Faithfully and Don't Stop Believing, Schon said he had to walk away from the computer to let what he heard sink in "because it sounded too good to be true."

"I thought, ‘He can’t be that good.’ But he is that good, he’s the real deal and so tremendously talented. Arnel doesn’t sound synthetic and he’s not emulating anyone. I tried to get a hold of him through YouTube and I finally heard from him that night, but it took some convincing to get him to believe that it really was me and not an imposter," he added.

Pineda, who hails from Quezon City, said a friend told him about Schon's message but he had initially dismissed it, thinking it was a hoax. He said he was persuaded to e-mail back Schon who then asked the Filipino singer to go to the United States for an audition.

Accompanied by Zoo manager Bert de Leon, Pineda left for the US last August to audition for the famed rock band. Four months later, Journey revealed that they had accepted the Filipino as their new lead singer.

“Arnel brings a soulful and passionate voice to Journey,” says keyboardist Cain. “His personality is very well-suited to our music. He’s a sincere, authentic person with a great smile and a big heart. I think fans are really going to love him. With Arnel’s soaring tenor, Journey returns to our heritage sound.”

Schon agrees. “We feel reborn. I think there’s a lot of chemistry between the five of us. At first we were going to go into the studio and just write four songs, but now it’s escalated to a lot of great new and diverse material. The stuff sounds tremendous. Everyone’s so stoked about it. We feel very fortunate to have found Arnel.”

De Leon revealed that Pineda is back in the Philippines and spending the holidays with his family.

"He was away for two months and got back last Sunday (December 23). A press conference is in the works early next year," he told abs-cbnNEWS.com.

Before the holiday break, band members did several test recordings for a new album with legendary producer Kevin Shirley.

In his blog, Shirley said he had just mixed seven "oustanding" new Journey songs with Pineda on vocals. "For the record, I think Arnel is 'the business!' The guy can really sing! He handles the ballads with SO much heart, and belts the rockers as hard, and melodically, as anyone I have heard. The songs are sensational - wonderfully crafted and deep, and so focused, you may wonder where they all came from. And I'm being serious," he reveals.

The new Journey album is scheduled for release next year.

Talent will out

Pineda's story echoes other similar finds of local and foreign talent hitting it big because of YouTube.

Just this month, ABS-CBN talent Charice Pempengco was invited to sing at the Ellen Degeneres Show after the popular comedian saw Pempengco's videos in YouTube. Pempengco's rendition of the diva-making Dreamgirls song "And I am Telling You I'm Not Going" so wowed the studio audience that they gave the 15-year-old a standing ovation.

Another unlikely success story made possible by YouTube is the dancing inmates of the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center. Their dance video of Michael Jackson “Thriller” has been downloaded at least nine million times and was identified as one of the 10 most popular viral videos of the year, according to Time magazine.

Other dance numbers performed by the 1,500 inmates include the songs "I Will Follow You" from the movie Sister Act, Queen's "Radio Gaga" and the Algorithm march.

Some foreign talents that hit it big through YouTube include Dutch vocalist/songwriter Esmée Denters and alternative artist Terra Naomi.

De Leon says that aside from a video-sharing site, YouTube could be viewed as an online talent search of both famous and unheard of artists. "It's like an international talent search done online," he explains.

And, in the case of Arnel Pineda, the time for his talent to shine has come.

'Enteng Kabisote 4'; 'Sakal, Sakali Saklolo' lead 2007 MMFF

The tried and tested Christmas fantasy film genre so far rules the box-office at the 2007 Metro Manila Film Festival. Actor and TV host Vic Sotto is back on the big screen as Enteng Kabisote, the mortal hero defending the land of fairies in the successful film franchise of the same name.

Radio dzMM’s Laila Chikadora reported that three days into the film festival, OctoArts Films' "Enteng Kabisote 4: Okay Ka, Fairy Ko (The Beginning of the Legend)" holds the top spot closely followed by the romantic drama-comedy from ABS-CBN's Star Cinema, "Sakal, Sakali, Saklolo", starring Judy Ann Santos and real-and-reel life love Ryan Agoncillo.

Fantasy films during the Yuletide filmfest are traditionally big hits, especially since the family-friendly themes capture the market composed of parents and their children. Watching fantasy films at Christmas time has become part of the season's celebration for Filipino families.

Among the hits in the past MMFF include heroic fantasy features like the "Enteng Kabisote" series, "Mulawin", "Exodus", "Agimat", and superhero flicks like "Lastikman", "Fantastic Man" and "Gagamboy."

Since 2006 however, the romantic drama-comedy has given the fantasy genre formidable competition. 2006's "Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo" was both a critical and commercial hit.

That success prompted the sequel "Sakal, Sakali, Saklolo" starring the original cast from the first film. Like its predecessor the sequel also enjoys praise from critics and box-office appeal.

A source quoted by Chikadora said that "Sakal, Sakali, Saklolo" is raking in box-office receipts in the provinces.

Nine films are competing in this year's festival. The other seven films are Maverick Films’ “Katas Ng Saudi"; Regal Films’ “Bahay Kubo” and “Desperadas"; Imus Productions’ “Resiklo";  MaQ Productions’ “Shake, Rattle & Roll 9”;  MP Productions’ “Anak Ng Kumander"; and an independent film production “Banal.”

BACK HOME. Eight Filipino sailors led by Capt. Restituto Bulilan (second from left), who were part of the crew of a Japanese tanker that was hijacked by pirates off the coast of Somalia in East Africa arrive in Manila after being held hostage for six weeks. PHILIPPINE DAILY INQUIRER/ROGER MARGALLO

8 RP seamen home after 45 days with pirates

By Tina Santos
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 08:51pm (Mla time) 12/23/2007

THIS COULD be the happiest Christmas for eight of the nine Filipino seamen who were taken hostage by pirates in Somalia two months ago.

Led by Capt. Restituto Bulilan, the seamen returned home via Cathay Pacific flight CX919 at around 4:40 p.m. Saturday.

"Very stressful" was how Bulilan described their 45-day ordeal in the hands of the pirates.

Bulilan narrated that the pirates boarded their vessel around 2 a.m. on Oct. 29, held them at gunpoint and took them to Somalia to Jaira in the Middle East.

"It was very stressful, there were so many problems, every day there were problems," Bulilan said of their captivity.

One didn't come home
He said he and his crew were mauled, hit by guns and not allowed to talk.

Those taken hostage, besides Bulilan, were Melchor Cayabyab, chief mate; Loreto Quiles, second mate; Raymundo Panaligan, third mate; Mario Ocenar, chief engineer; Adelino Amparo, first engineer: Carlito Lotoc, second engineer; Laureano Villanueva, buson; and Ismael Perez, chief cook.

Quiles was not in the group that returned home. It was not immediately clear why he was not in the group.

Speaking on behalf of the seven seamen who returned home with him, Bulilan said they were grateful to the officials of the Philippine Embassy for "doing everything to take them home."

No ransom paid?
"Ang alam ko wala [What I know was there was none]," he said when asked if a ransom was paid for their release.

"As far as I'm concerned, it was the owner of the ship who facilitated the release," Bulilan said, adding that they also learned that a US Navy ship had helped.

The nine Filipinos were part of the crew of a Japanese tanker that was hijacked by pirates on dangerous waters off the coast of Somalia in East Africa.

The 6,253-ton tanker was carrying crew members from Burma, the Philippines and South Korea and up to 40,000 tons of highly explosive benzene.

$1M ransom demand
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs had said the pirates threatened to kill the crew if a $1 million ransom was not paid.

Officials at the Department of Foreign Affairs said they had no information on whether or not money changed hands to obtain the release of the Filipino sailors.

LOBOC CRUISE. In order to iron out kinks for the operation of the P14 million new Loboc Cruise docking port/terminal, the Provincial Tourism Council chaired by Peter Dejaresco and BM Corazon Galbreath met boat operators, tour operators together with Loboc Mayor Leon Calipusan at the Loboc Tourism Complex last Monday. Rep. Eladio Jala joined the meeting to assure that the bailey bridge reinforcement work will be fast tracked in time for the visit of guests from the ASEAN Summit in Cebu City on Dec 10-14.

The badly needed reinforcement work at the existing bailey bridge that connects to the newly completed Loboc Tourism Complex will commence shortly, according to Rep. Eladio Jala yesterday.

The solon worked double time to follow up the release of the budget for the reinforcement work since tourist buses can not ferry their passengers to the complex where the P12 million docking port is located.

Jala said that the P8-million allotment was hand carried yesterday from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Manila central offices by OIC District Engr, Ramie Doroy of the Bohol 2nd Engineering.

The solon said that since he wants the bridge to be 100% safe for tourists, he ordered District Engr. Arames Torrefranca of DPWH District III to expedite the work since he wants the bridge ready for use when some delegates from the ASEAN Summit will sample the

famous Loboc River Cruise using the new docking port/terminal, right across the centuries old Loboc Church.
He said that DPWH-3 will compile and write the materials required for the reinforcement on the website starting tomorrow to award the project which has to be done before December 10 or barely two weeks from today

Jala's action came as an offshoot of the request of tourism industry players when he attended the meeting convened by the Provincial Tourism Council (PTC) at the Loboc Tourism complex last Monday.

The meeting presided by PTC chairpersons Peter Dejaresco and Prov'l. Board Member Corazon Galbreath gathered the Loboc floating restaurant operators to thresh out concerns regarding their eventual transfer to the new docking port terminal.

Loboc Mayor Leon Calipusan who hosted the meeting said the operators have agreed that starting on Friday (Dec. 1), tourists will disembark at the new docking port.

However, their embarkation will still be at their respective docking areas.

The next phase of their transfer will be on January 15 when both embarkation and disembarkation will already be at the new docking port.

Then final phase will be the total transfer, which will include their respective kitchens, targeted by April next year.

During the meeting, the problem on congestion during noontime trips was lengthily discussed since an ordinance regulating the number of boats to cruise upstream to Busai Falls has not been implemented.

Mayor Calipusan showed a list of violations monitored daily. However, no sanctions were made to the violators.

PTC Chair Dejaresco asked that said ordinance be strictly imposed before any accident might happen due to the congestion of boats near Busai Falls.

Calipusan vowed to conduct another meeting with the boat operators tomorrow. This time, he will ask the owners to sign an agreement that violation to the "upstream limit" will mean revocation of their permits.

In attendance during the PTC meeting were Nonette Bolo, president of the Bohol Federation of Travel & Tours Operators (BOFETTO), Loboc Kag. Raymund Cal, president of the Loboc Boat Operators, RG Ong, Lito Responte of the PTC together with Prov'l Tourism Officer Baby Balio and Jo Remolador

Ruffa: This film is really for me

By Marinel Cruz
Inquirer

MANILA, Philippines - Only three months ago, she was reported to be patching things up with Turkish husband Yilmaz Bektas, with whom she had a prolonged and very public spat earlier this year.

Now Ruffa Gutierrez seems to have turned cold again, referring to Yilmaz as just “the father of my kids.”

She said this was because she recently received an e-mail from him, asking to be called exactly that. “Gusto ko naman s’yang pagbigyan,” the actress told entertainment writers on Tuesday. “I don’t want him to think I’m using him to promote my new film. We had an agreement that I should no longer mention his name in any of my interviews.”

The gathering was for Ruffa’s comeback movie titled “Desperadas,” Regal Entertainment’s entry to the Metro Manila Film Festival next month. The Joel Lamangan film also features Rufa Mae Quinto, Iza Calzado and Marian Rivera.

However, Ruffa said Yilmazâ€"father of Lorin, 4, and Venice, 3â€"was welcome to celebrate Christmas with them here. He is currently based in Turkey. Ruffa explained, “The girls still need his guidance as their father. [And] I can’t go to Istanbul just yet [on account of my] contracts here.”

Immediately after the holidays, Ruffa will start work on “My Monster Mom,” where she co-stars with her real-life mother Annabelle Rama. Ruffa was last seen on the big screen in the dramatic film “Halik” (1998), opposite Christopher de Leon.

Ruffa said “Desperadas” was hatched during her birthday party last year. The plan was for her to share stellar billing with Gretchen Barretto, Dawn Zulueta and Pops Fernandez.

“I’m sure you all know what happened. Had the movie pushed through with the original cast, baka hindi kami umabot sa film fest,” Ruffa added. “I think this movie is really for me … not so much for my three friends, [though] I’d still like to work with them one day.”

Among your co-stars, who is the closest to you?

[It’s like] I found three new sisters. Nobody gave me problems. Walang nagtaray sa akin.

I’ve been friends with Rufa Mae for a long time. We first worked together in my movie “Pinakamagandang Hayop sa Balat ng Lupa.” Extra pa lang s’ya du’n. I admire her because she really paid her dues as an actress.

Iza is one of the most kind-hearted persons I know. She insists on calling me ate, even though I don’t look like an ate.

Marian is misunderstood. Many people say she’s become conceited. I think she’s just tired because she’s very busy. She was never masungit to me. The other night she came up to me and hugged me.

Iza has a steady boyfriend. Would you say that the rest of you girls are desperate for love?
I was desperately in need of love when I was in Istanbul because I missed my family. If you ask me now … I’d say no because Lorin and Venice are here to fill that need in my heart.

I don’t think desperada is a negative word. I think every one has become desperate at one point in life. The most important thing is that you learn from experience. So I can say that, yes, I’ve been desperate [but] survivor na ako ngayon.

You’re the only ABS-CBN talent in the main cast. Are you allowed to promote this movie on GMA 7?

I have an exclusive contract with ABS-CBN. Even if I want to promote on GMAâ€"you know I don’t want to get involved in the network warsâ€"I have to honor my contract. I have to follow whatever the bosses say.

How similar is your character to your real self?

We both love to shop for clothes. As a mother, we’re similar in the sense that we’re both strict. Kapag babae ang anak, mas iniingatan. I totally understand how my mom felt about me when I was a teenager.

There is a scene in the movie when your character’s daughter asks about the birds and the bees. Are you yourself prepared for when Lorin tells you she has a crush on someone?

I guess it will depend on how old she is [when that happens]. I hope she doesn’t ask when she’s just 5; I might faint. When she’s 15, I can be frank with her. These things are learned in school nowadays, anyway.

Wasn’t your mom supposed to be in this movie?

Yes. But Regal couldn’t afford her rate. Tita Nova Villa replaced her. What you don’t know about my mom is that nagpe-presyo na rin ’yan. We will do a commercial next year at parang gusto pa yata akong tanggalan ng sweldo.

2 ESTUDYANTENG DINUKOT, NAKATAKAS SA KIDNAPPER

(Vladi Eduarte)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Friends and Comrades of Tubag Bohol,

In behalf of Hajjii (a.k.a. Ghost, Wolf, Lycan), I'd like to apologize for what had happened in the Balut poem written by Sigbin II. I have asked Sigbin's permission that I will delete the entire Balut thread and comments.

I have read and reviewed all the posts and comments and I felt that Hajji's comments were inappropriate and uncalled for. I have consulted this issue with the International Moderators and the feeling is the same.

Personally I am grateful for Hajji's contributions to our website, however, this does not mean that we will be tolerating hurting and offensive comments personally directed to any of our compatriots in Bohol.

Accompanying my public apology is an announcement that Hajji is now banned in Tubag Bohol. His account remains. However, he could no longer post or reply to any topics. The ban is good for 120 days starting today. The duration of the ban may be extended until he issues a public apology to Asianfairy.

Hajji's ban is partial. The previous ban that I implemented was lifetime and it was a total ban in which I removed the account of one of our members. We all know the reasons and the events behind that ban.

I am posting this message in public so that all may know that Tubag Bohol is not just a website where people can write whatever they want, but a website, a real community that considers everyone as an integral part of one big happy family, a loving and caring family where respect, responsibility, honor, dignity, and decency abound.

This disciplinary action, like a father or a mother imposing it on her son or daughter, must be construed as a corrective measure so all may enjoy a peaceful and harmonious relationships in Tubag Bohol.

With sadness in my heart and mind,
Mike Ligalig

Tama lang siguro ang discilinary acton ni Mike which is a partial ban of the forum kay irst offense pa man, piro kung maotro guihapun or masundan pag lain bahala na si admin, although bag o lang ko sa forum like TB kinahanglan siguro nga aduna tay gamay nga disiplina ug kortisiya sa atong buhi-an nga estorya, depende sa thread. As to the case of Hajjii it was sad to know that those things happened inside the TB house. Merry X'mas everyone!

Ferdie Lintuan

Davao radioman slain in Christmas Eve murder

Motorcycle-riding assassins shot dead a radio commentator of Manila Broadcasting Corporation Monday, a day before Christmas.

Ferdie "Batman" Lintuan, a blocktimer for dxGO, was driving a green Volkswagen car from the radio station in Davao City when two men onboard a motorcycle approached and shot him.

Lucio Ceniza, who was with Lintuan at the time of the murder, said the victim died after sustaining two gunshot wounds to the head. Police said the incident occurred at 9:50 a.m.

“Palabas na kami ng station noon. Pagdating naming sa labas bigla na lang siyang pinagbabaril (We were on our way out of the station. When we got out, he was suddenly gunned down),” Ceniza told abs-cbnNEWS.com.

Ceniza said he was beside Lintuan when the attack took place. He said the shooting happened so fast that he failed to notice the attacker.

“Nagpatay-patayan na lang ako, nasa front passenger seat ako. May tama rin ng bala ang bintanang katabi ko (I pretended to be dead. I was at the front passenger seat. The car window beside me was also hit),” he said.

Raul Atopuesto of dxGO said Lintuan was a hardhitting commentator who tackled different topics in his radio show. He said dxGO management officials were unaware if Lintuan received death threats before the incident.

Colleagues and Cotabato local officials condemned the killing, prompting the police to create a task force to solve the murder.

Lintuan was known for his hard hitting commentaries through his radio program “Ligas Paka.”

Some of his colleagues believe that the murder is connected to Lintuan’s work as a journalist.

Police authorities, meanwhile, have formed a task force to investigate the murder.

Malacañang denounces killing
Malacañang, meanwhile, ordered an immediate investigation on the murder of Lintuan.

“We are asking the police and the National Bureau of Investigation to investigate this. The government will not allow this criminal act to go unpunished,” said Secretary Jesus Dureza, presidential adviser on the peace process.

He added that the government will provide assistance to Lintuan’s grieving family.

Dureza said Lintuan was a survivor by an attack of the New People’s Army years ago which killed radio announcer Leo Palo.

The International Federation of Journalists-National Union of Journalists of the Philippines Safety Office has recorded 90 cases of murders of journalists in the Philippines in the past 20 years. Three perpetrators have been convicted while only eight cases remain active.

"The performance of the Philippine police, courts and judicial system must dramatically improve if fear-mongering and violence against journalists is to subside," said IFJ's Asia Pacific Director, Jacqueline Park.

"These latest arrests and charges underline why it is so important that police continue to investigate crimes against journalists in order to ensure that attackers are brought to justice and no longer pose a threat to the media and to all of society." Close this ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines -- Convicted child rapist and former Zamboanga del Norte congressman Romeo Jalosjos said Sunday he would file illegal detention charges against the policemen who re-arrested him at dawn on the same day.

Jalosjos, in an interview with the Philippine Daily Inquirer, complained he was a victim of “warrant-less” arrest.

His 80-year old mother, Angelina, who was with him while he was having a medical check-up, appealed to President Macapagal-Arroyo to do something to free her son.

“My son is free yet some people in the government want him in jail,” Angelina said.

Jalosjos, relying on a photocopied certificate of discharge he obtained from officials of the New Bilibid Prisons in Muntinlupa City, walked out the prison compound Saturday night and flew to his hometown in Dapitan, Zamboanga del Norte. He was re-arrested early Sunday morning and brought to Zamboanga City, where he was expected to be detained at the Zamboanga penal colony.

Jalosjos was sentenced to two life imprisonment terms for the rape of an 11-year-old girl over a decade ago. His sentence was commuted by President Macapagal-Arroyo to 16 years. This was further cut by the Bureau of Corrections to 13 years based on “good conduct” exhibited inside Bilibid.

He was given a certificate of discharge on Dec. 16, 2007, after which he stepped out of the prison compound to join his family for breakfast at a suburban home. He, however, returned to Bilibid upon learning that Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez was suspending his release because he was supposed to be freed in 2009, when he shall turn 70, and not last Dec. 16.

President Arroyo has issued an administrative order allowing the release of pardoned prisoners, when they turn 70, after undergoing the process fo

When does Christmas begin?
December 22, 2007 03:56:00
Philippine Daily Inquirer

The Inquirer quoted Fr. Genaro Diwa in a front-page story on Dec. 15: “We are the only country celebrating Christmas nine days earlier than the rest of the Universal Church.” This is not so. The Philippines begins the celebration of Christmas, with the rest of the Catholic Church, on the night of Dec. 24. My source for this is the same Father Diwa, compiler of “Ordo 2008,” the official liturgical guide of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines’ (CBCP’s) Episcopal Commission on Liturgy.

The “Ordo” states: “the Aguinaldo Masses in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary” are “to be celebrated on the nine days before Christmas for the perseverance of the nation in faith.” The texts for these Masses, as given in the CBCP-approved “Supplement to the Roman Sacramentary” are those of the Advent Masses for these days. The only difference, allowed by the indult from Rome, is that the “Gloria” is sung and the priest wears white vestments.

Here in Bacolod City, Bishop Vicente M. Navarra has made it clear that only Masses celebrated early in the morning carry the privileges attached to the Misa de Gallo [Christmas season dawn Mass].

The Church’s Christmas season ends in the Philippines, as everywhere else, with the Feast of the Lord’s Baptism, usually the second Sunday of January.

Secret Santa rides again in Kansas City By MARIA SUDEKUM FISHER, Associated Press Writer
1 hour, 2 minutes ago

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Susan Dahl had spent four months homeless in Colorado and just been on a harrowing 10-hour bus trip through sleet and snow. Hungry and broke, all she wanted to do was get back to family in Minnesota.

That's when a tall man in a red coat and red hat sat next to her at the downtown bus station, talked to her quietly and then slipped her $100 on that recent December afternoon.

The man was doing the work of Larry Stewart, Kansas City's original Secret Santa who anonymously wandered city streets doling out $100 bills to anyone who looked like they needed it. Stewart died of cancer at age 58 earlier this year, but his legacy lives on.

"He said `Here's a $100 bill ... and this is in memory of Larry Stewart,'" said Dahl, 56.

During about a quarter century, Stewart quietly gave out more than $1.3 million to people in laundromats, diners, bus stations, shelters and thrift stores, saying it was his way of giving back at Christmas for all the wealth and generosity he had received in his lifetime.

For years, Stewart did not want his name known or want thanks or applause, but last December he acknowledged who he was and used his last few months while battling cancer to press his message of kindness toward others. He even trained some friends in the ways of Secret Santa.

This Christmas, a friend who told Stewart in the hospital that he would carry on for him is out on the streets, handing out $100 bills, each one stamped with "Larry Stewart, Secret Santa."

Between Kansas City and several other cities this Christmas, the new Secret Santa will give away $75,000 of his own money, mostly in $100 bills.

"I didn't want to be a Secret Santa," said the man, a business consultant who lives in the Kansas City area. "I wanted to give Larry money. But last year, he said I had to hand it out myself. So I did, and I got hooked."

This new Secret Santa talks about Larry Stewart to just about everyone he encounters. "Have you ever heard of a man named Larry Stewart?" he asks before handing out $100 or more.

Depending on who he's talking to, the new Secret Santa might say Stewart was a man who believed in making people happy by giving them money they didn't have to ask for, apply for or wait in line for.

"There was this fella named Larry Stewart," he tells a man in the bus station. "He was an old friend of mine. He was called Secret Santa, and every year he would find a few people who might need a little money and he would ask that you pass on the kindness."

People respond differently to the gesture. Some cry. Some scream. A rare few even say "No thanks."

Others take the money and offer their own gifts. like Robert Young, who was homeless and had only 20 cents in his pocket. When Secret Santa gave him $200, Young, 50, took out an old notebook and ripped out a song he had written.

"It's yours now," he told Secret Santa, who thanked Young, and carefully tucked the pages into his pocket.

The new Secret Santa has also started a Web site, and is trying to recruit other Secret Santas across the country. "Larry's dream was for a Secret Santa in every city," Kansas City's Santa said.

There are now a couple apprentices, with more candidates turning up all the time. But, he says, you don't have to be willing to hand out money to be a Secret Santa.

"Anyone can be a Secret Santa," he says. "You don't have to give away $100. You can give away kindnes. Help someone."

Sana Maging Masaya ang Pasko Natin

By Manny Pacquiao
PhilBoxing.com
Thu, 20 Dec 2007

I want to spend christmas with my family in the US and we're going places where my kids will enjoy.

My fight in March is not an easy fight, so I will need to take serious training, so that people will be impressed with my performance.

Kapag nanalo ako sa March, I will have more big fights coming up.

Saka lagi ko sinasabi, we have an unfinished business na dapat tapusin.

Hanggang sa muling 'Kumbinasyon. Mabuhay!

Loboc - Bohol / The Loboc Children's Choir
December 21, 2007, 02:20:56 AM

The Loboc Children's Choir

The Loboc Children’s Choir (LCC) was founded in 1980. It is composed of schoolchildren ages nine to thirteen from the town of Loboc. From an ordinary school choir established for school and community affairs, it has blossomed into one of the most outstanding choirs in the Philippines today.

The LCC is a three-time National Champion of the National Music Competitions for Young Artists (NAMCYA) - Children’s Choir Category, the most prestigious music competitions in the Philippines, for 2001, 1995, and 1993.

The Choir has held concerts all over the country as well as in other parts of the world. In July 2004, the group was especially invited by World Vision Korea to represent the Philippines in the World Vision 2004 International Children’s Choir Festival held in Korea. The Choir successfully held concerts in Seoul, Ansung, and Incheon and performed along side children’s choirs from Australia, the U.S.A., Hong Kong, and Korea. With the theme “Imagine a World Where Children Are Safe”, the children of Loboc joined about 600 other children sing a rousing finale that brought forth their message of peace, hope, brotherhood, and love.

One of its memorable projects for 2003 was its partnership with the Metropolitan Museum of Manila, the leading art museum in the Philippines, which launched an exhibit on the arts and culture of Bohol. The Choir, under the auspices of the Met and of its leaders led by Trustee Bea Zobel Jr. and Executive Director Ino Manalo, regaled the exhibit launch with a special concert, which was followed by a Christmas Concert tour in major business establishments in Makati and Ayala Alabang. This climaxed with a command performance for Her Majesty Queen Sofia of Spain in a cultural exchange visit to the Philippines. Another memorable project was the highly acclaimed back-to-back concert with the University of the Philippines Singing Ambassadors (UPSA), winner of the prestigious Gran Premio Citta di Arezzo in 2001 during the 49th Concorso Polifonico Internazionale Guido d’Arezzo in Arezzo, Italy. The concert, aptly entitled “An Evening of Heaven’s Music”, was held in line with the Heritage Conservation Program in the Province of Bohol.

In 2000, it represented the country during the International Children's Culture and Arts Festival in Tianjin, China, and held concerts in Beijing and Hong Kong. In 1996, in a concert dubbed, "On Angels' Wings: From Bohol to the World", the choir toured key cities in the United States. It has performed with the World Youth Orchestra during its concerts in Bohol and Cebu in 1999, and the University of Santo Tomas Symphony Orchestra. And as a 'cultural treasure' of the Province, the group often sings for visiting dignitaries, and local and foreign tourists.

A major highlight of the choir's past activities is its 1st European Concert Tour in September to November of 2003. The group represented the Philippines in the 6th International Folksongs Festival "Europe and Its Songs" held in Barcelona, Spain. In this international competition, LCC bagged the Gold Medal (First Prize) of the Youth Category, and was awarded the Festival Cup or the Grand Prize for garnering the highest point average of 97.5, besting the other 12 choirs from all over the world. The Choir also held very successful concerts in The Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Austria, Hungary, CzechRepublic, Germany, and Switzerland. Its concert repertoire is a combination of classical, folk, modern and children's songs.

However, the Loboc Children's Choir is not only heard in concert halls or auditoriums, but in prisons, hospitals, orphanages, and homes for the aged as well, where its music of hope, love, and joy also find its meaning. It continues to take active part in school, town, and provincial activities.

Magandang Pasko at Manigong bagong Taon sa Inyong Lahat from Dexter Zafra Webmaster @ Ex-designz.net

Have a safe Holiday!

Ang Pasko ay sumapit
Tayo ay mangagsi-awit
Ng magagandang himig
Dahil sa ang Diyos ay pag-ibig
Nang si Kristo ay isilang
May tatlong haring nagsidalaw
At ang bawat isa
Ay nagsipaghandog ng tanging alay

Bagong taon ay magbagong-buhay
Nang lumigaya ang ating bayan
Tayo'y magsikap upang makamtan
Natin ang kasaganaan

Tayo'y mangagsi-awit
Habang ang mundo'y tahimik
Ang araw ay sumapit
Ng Sanggol na dulot ng langit
Tayo ay magmahalan
Ating sundin ang gintong aral
At magbuhat ngayon
Kahit hindi Pasko ay magbigayan

Christmas in Brussels for Pinoys

By RAQUEL BERNAL-CRISOSTOMO
ABS-CBN Europe News Desk

Filipinos in Belgium were all treated to an early Christmas celebration with PASKO SA BRUSSELS as the Philippine Embassy in Brussels spearheaded the Filipino way of welcoming the Christmas season.

In her opening speech, Ambassador Cristina Ortega welcomed all the Filipinos and guests to the most awaited and happiest event in the Philippines.

"Pasko sa Brussels is a celebration of Christmas tradition. With the celebration, we hope to share with everyone here in Belgium the Filipino way of welcoming Christmas season.", she said.

Filipinos, unlike their western and European counterparts, don’t celebrate Halloween and Thanksgiving so they treat Christmas as the biggest holiday of the year.

Like the usual celebration in the Philippines where the aroma of bibingka (baked rice cake) and puto bumbong (steamed rice cake) fill the air, the presence of lechon (roast pork), dinuguan (blood stew), puto’t bibingka, barbecue and pansit (rice noodles) likewise made the celebration of Pasko sa Brussels more splendid.

Members of Diplomatic corps and guests were serenaded with Filipino Christmas carols and were entertained with popular folk dances.

Ambassador Jacques Vermeulen, director for South-East Asia of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belgium acknowledged the warm reception extended by all Filipinos to those who attended the event.

"The 2nd edition of Pasko sa Brussels is a big success, lots of people, nice stands. And we Belgians are very happy to celebrate the large and appreciated Filipino community in Belgium this festival, Christmas," he said during an interview with Balitang Europe.

Even the handicrafts and accessories made in the Philippines were simply adored by Belgians.

On the other hand, though some consider Christmas celebration in the Philippines as the best, Maricar Macapagal, an OFW , admitted that Pasko sa Brussels somehow satisfies their "homesickness".

"Although, di ito katulad ng feeling ng Pasko sa Pilipinas, maganda na rin kasi first time na makikita mo uli yung mga Pilipino din dito sa Brussels plus yung mga pagkain na di naming natitikman everyday (although it’s not really like Christmas in the Philippines, it’s also beautiful because it’s the first time one sees in Brussels food that you don’t taste everyday)," she said gleamingly.

They are thankful that with this event, Filipinos were able to spend time with their families and friends which is the real meaning of Christmas.

PACQUIAO-MARQUEZ TICKETS WILL GO ON SALE FRIDAY

By Dong Secuya

Wed, 19 Dec 2007

MANILA -- Top Rank president Bob Arum spoke briefly to PhilBoxing.com and informed that tickets for the Pacquiao-Marquez rematch set on March 15 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas will go on sale this Friday, Dec. 22.

Ticket prices are pegged at $600, $400, $300, $200 and $100.

Arum is in the Philippines to attend the 29th birthday celebration of Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao last Monday and to iron out any remaining hitches for the highly anticipated battle between the two pound-for-pound super featherweights.

Arum will be leaving tonight on a Philippine Airlines flight for Las Vegas.

Pacquiao's close friend and confidant Rex 'Wakee' Salud, who was with Arum, also disclosed that co-promoters Top Rank and Golden Boy are aiming to surpass the 350,000 PPV buys mark that a Pacquiao fight normally does. For this reason, they wanted Manny Pacquiao to be in the U.S. by January 15 to begin his training at Freddie Roach's Wildcard gym and to make some promotional tours for the fight.

Philippine Daily News / Jalosjos Back in Bilibid Prison

'Freed' Jalosjos back in Bilibid

Convicted child rapist Romeo Jalosjos said Monday that he was indeed freed from the New Bilibid Prisons (NBP). He also said that he has papers to support this.

The former Zamboanga del Norte congressman told The Philippine Star newspaper that, "Around 4:30 a.m. Sunday, my family picked me up at my quarters. We attended Mass at the Ina ng Awa Parish, which is also inside the compound."

He said that after the Mass, he and his family went home to have breakfast. He slept after that. "But prison officials called me up at 11 a.m. and requested me to come back because the Department of Justice (DOJ) reportedly still wanted to conduct a review of my status."

At a tennis court outside the main prison facility but within the NBP complex in Muntinlupa City, Jalosjos showed media his release order and maintained that his status as an inmate should be reviewed.

Jalosjos has a home on M. Araullo Street in Katarungan Village. NBP officials said the village is part of the prison's reservation area but the properties there are privately owned. It was learned that it is a housing project for members of the judiciary and DOJ personnel, including all its bureaus.

Jalosjos said that he was just cooperating when he showed up again at the NBP premises, and was giving way to the request of the DOJ for a review of his sentence.

He also said he is confident about the computation of his sentence made by former Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) chief Vicente Vinarao and his successor, Ricardo Dapat.

"In my case, there is no need for a recommendation or a request from any other office. Director Dapat had just implemented what was needed to be implemented. I had to be released. He is just doing his job otherwise, he can be charged with arbitrary detention," Jalosjos said.

Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez, however, said, "The release was premature because it was not approved by the DOJ. Political consideration here is something that you cannot ignore."

Gonzalez said President Arroyo was "very upset" when she heard that Jalosjos was being released Sunday.

"The President was upset because she felt that her policy of 70 was being ignored," he said.

DOJ review on

The DOJ said it is reviewing papers related to the release of Jalosjos to make sure that he has already served the correct length of time at the NBP.

The review came after the President commuted Jalosjos's two life terms and the credits given for his good conduct in prison.

According to ABS-CBN News correspondent Marieton Pacheco, the DOJ specifically wanted to make certain that no extra credit was given to Jalosjos for his good conduct while in detention.

Gonzalez explained that aside from the commutaion of the life terms to 16 years, Vinarao also deducted 15 days per month from Jalosjos's remaining sentence as credit for good conduct. This resulted in a much shorter sentence.

However, the DOJ wanted to make sure that the said credits are within the law and that there is no other reason behind the expedition of Jalosjos's release.

Gonzalez also said that the President was upset by the issue because instructions were given that Administrative Order 155 should apply when the commutation was granted.

AO 155 requires detainees to be at least 70 years old before being eligible for executive clemency.

This means Jalosjos could only be released in 2010 when he turns 70, or April 2009 at the earliest if the DOJ's computation will be followed, minus the strict adherence to the order.

Former state prosecutor Eric Mallonga, however, said Jalosjos could only be released after six more years, even with the President's commutation.

Mallonga added that the remaining period of Jalosjos's stay in prison is not important anymore. He said that the issue is whether or not the convicted child rapist has undergone rehabilitation.

Justice department officials are currently investigating NBP personnel who leaked the draft release order of the former congressman. Gonzalez said the leak was the reason behind the confusion on Jalosjos's supposed release Sunday.

Ready to defend release order

Meanwhile, Jalosjos said he is prepared to fight any order that would extend his sentence.

In an interview with ABS-CBN News correspondent Jorge Cariño at a tennis court outside the prison Monday, Jalosjos showed a stamp mark on his arm indicating that he is already considered an NBP "visitor."

He said that he "almost went crazy" when the BuCor told him to return Sunday because of the mistake.

Jalosjos said that instead of debating with the BuCor regarding the order, he will wait for the DOJ to conclude its review.

"Having good faith in them and knowing there's just a little confusion, convinced that my release was proper, I decided to go back. After all my things are here, I never left. But as far as we are concerned and my lawyers are concerned, I am a free man," he said.

Jalosjos said that his sentence was shortened because he is already classified as a "colonist."

As a colonist, under BuCor classification rules, five days would be deducted from the sentence every month, aside from the 15 days credited as "good conduct time allowance."

He said that if his release would be blocked to lengthen his stay in prison, he would be forced to contest it in court.

"Now, if they insist they will hold me, then I'm deprived of justice and it's up to me to go to the Supreme Court or any court," the former Zamboanga del Norte representative said.

Jalosjos said he believes that the issue will not reach the courts anymore and that he would be fully freed within three days.

While the discussion on the Jalosjos release order went on, several senators also joined in the debate.

"Ang nangyayari nga diyan dahil pinauna mo nga ang dating presidente, lahat ngayon niyang manghihingi ng pardon. Sasabihin bakit siya binigyan, ako hindi? (Just because a former president was first released, everyone now wants to ask for pardon. They would say 'he's been released, why not me?')" said Sen. Richard Gordon, referring to the pardon granted to former president Joseph Estrada, who was convicted of plunder in September.

"Ang kaso ng tatay ko political in nature, hindi naman nanggahasa ang tatay ko 'no? (My father's case was political in nature. He was not a rapist, right?)" said Sen. Jinggoy Estrada, the former president's son.

This x'mas song was sung by our very own Jose Mari Chan.

Christmas in our Hearts
Jose Mari Chan

Whenever I see girls and boys
Selling lanterns on the streets,
I remember the Child
In the manger as He sleeps.

Wherever there are people
Giving gifts, exchanging cards,
I believe that Christmas
Is truly in their hearts.

Let's light our Christmas trees
For a bright tomorrow
Where nations are at peace
And all are one in God

Let's sing Merry Christmas
And a happy holiday,
This season may we never forget
The love we have for Jesus
Let Him be the One to guide us
As another new year starts
And may the spirit of Christmas
Be always in our hearts.

In every prayer and every song
The community unites,
Celebrating the birth
Of our Savior, Jesus Christ

Let love, like that starlight
On that first Christmas morn,
Lead us back to the manger
Where Christ the Child was born

So, come let us rejoice
Come and sing a Christmas carol
With one big joyful voice
Proclaim the name of the Lord!

Dan Fogelberg dies of cancer at 56

Reuters

LOS ANGELES - Singer-songwriter Dan Fogelberg, famed for the soaring vocals and elegant instrumentation of tunes such as "Longer" and "A Love Like This," died on Sunday, three years after being diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer. He was 56.

"He fought a brave battle with cancer and died peacefully at home in Maine with his wife Jean at his side," said a posting on his Web site (http://www.danfogelberg.com).

"His strength, dignity and grace in the face of the daunting challenges of this disease were an inspiration to all who knew him."

Fogelberg, a native of Peoria, Illinois, broke into the music industry in the early 1970s, at a time when it was embracing introspective songwriting, or "soft rock," by such acts as the Eagles and America.

Fogelberg, who distinguished himself with his angelic vocals and lyrics that celebrated beauty and romance, hit his commercial and creative peak in 1981 with "The Innocent Age," which yielded three top-10 singles, "Hard to Say," "Same Old Lang Syne" and "Leader of the Band."

His most recent release, "Full Circle," came out in 2003. The following year, he revealed that he had been diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer, and urged men over the age of 50 to get tested for the disease.

New Miss Belgium gets Flemish tongues wagging Mon Dec 17, 7:07 AM ET

BRUSSELS (AFP) - Belgium's political tensions entered the glamour stakes after it was revealed that the new Miss Belgium does not speak Dutch.

Alizee Poulicek, who comes from the country's French-speaking region, was booed by some of the 4,000 audience when she admitted that she could not understand a question put to her in Dutch at the contest on Saturday night in the main Flemish city of Antwerp.

Poulicek, a 20-year-old language student, speaks French, Czech and English, but Flemish tabloid daily Het Laatste Niuews headlined its Monday edition with: "Miss Belgium does not speak Dutch".

The paper underlined that the "community crisis in our country" -- where there is no government six months after general elections amid bickering between leaders of the main French and Flemish parties -- "has insinuated itself into even the lightest sector."

Poulicek's victory "is not going down well," the daily said.

She said she had been taking Dutch lessons before the contest and has pledged to improve her standard in one of Belgium's three official languages, along with French and German.

The incident did not hurt her image with television viewers who voted for her, but Flemish journalists assailed her with questions at a press conference, highlighting her deficiencies in their tongue.

The Flemish community accounts for 60 percent of Belgium's 10.5 million people. A further 3.5 million live in Wallonia and one million in the largely Francophone, but officially bilingual Brussels.
