The Numptia is a wonder of the open seas. It offers a spectacular variety of large exterior deck areas, which offer guests the perfect platform for relaxing in peace and quiet or entertaining on a grand scale. The owner’s meticulous attention to detail is reflected in a truly fantastic, dedicated spa deck, complete with beauty salon, massage room, sauna, Turkish bath and a fully equipped gymnasium. The Numptia accommodates 12 guests in six spacious guest cabins (full beam master suite, VIP suite, three queen-size double guest cabins and one twin guest cabin). All decks can be accessed via an expansive circular staircase and a glass elevator which links four decks through the heart of the yacht. Designed with charter and private cruising in mind, all guest areas enjoy state-of-the-art audio visual facilities including full Kaleidescape on-demand entertainment systems. Fully prepared for a summer of cruising, this brand new yacht has touch and go helicopter capability and carries a comprehensive inventory of water-sports equipment.

Despite the fact that Numptia is privately owned, the yacht can be leased for charter through Burgess for about $646 000 per week, and also is available for sale for an undisclosed price, according to rumors, it’s about 85 million dollars. So…enjoy the photos, I guess.

Science and Research / Name-letter effect
April 09, 2013, 07:36:37 PM
People tend to prefer the letters that appear in their namesâ€"particularly their initialsâ€"and this preference is called the “name-letter effect.” This may not be all that surprising, given how often we write and read the letters in our names; where the name-letter effect gets interesting, however, is how this shows up subconsciously in the strangest places. Controversial studies have suggested that there appear to be significant correlations between the letters in peoples’ names and certain life choices they make and successes (or failures) they experience.

For instance, a series of studies done at SUNY Buffalo found that people are more likely to live in cities and/or states with names that resemble their own, find jobs and careers that linguistically resemble their names, and perhaps even find mates that fit the same criteria. It’s also possible that the name-letter effect can have negative effects; Two professors, one from UC San Diego and the other from Yale, conducted studies that examined, among other things, whether baseball players with a first or last name that starts with K (the statistical symbol for a strikeout) were more likely to strike out than their peers. The report claims that “We found that our own-name liking sabotages success for people whose initials match negative performance labels.”

It should be noted that these studies are considered by many to be of dubious (at best) legitimacy and that the results may in fact be due to statistical artifacts (errors). -- http://listverse.com/

They may not sound familiar, but the gurgling and lip-smacking noises made by gelada baboons could shed light on the origins of human speech, researchers say.

Thore Bergman, assistant professor at the University of Michigan and head author of a study that looked at the primates, told Yahoo News in an email that geladas made perfect subjects. He wrote, “I knew that geladas had several features that made them interesting research subjectsâ€"including large, complex social groups and a diverse repertoire of sounds.”

In fact, only gelada baboons, found in Ethiopia, have been found to make these specific kinds of vocalizations.
Researchers tracked dozens of these baboons in Ethiopia’s Simien Mountains National Park, where they recorded their voices on Palm Pilots.

The findings, published in Current Biology and surfaced by BBC News, assert that the vocalizations share similarities with human ancestors’ early speech.

“The finding supports the hypothesis that others had previously proposedâ€"that lip-smacking may be a potential precursor to speech because it shows that primates can indeed vocalize while lip-smacking to produce complex sounds," Bergman told Yahoo News.

Bergman further explained to the BBC that the next step is to study the purpose of the sounds, which he believes the gelada use to bond with each otherâ€"sort of baboon-style small talk.

But other industry averages have lost altitude year over year; the number of denied boardings rose to 0.97 per 1,000 passengers from 0.78, and customer complaints climbed to 1.43 from 1.19 per 1,000 passengers. “While some things are getting better complaints are getting worse,” says Headley, “There’s a notably higher increase in volume.”

Blame the same industry belt-tightening and consolidation for more of that, he says; altered flight schedules and confusion among airline employees tend to cause overbooked flights and upset passengers.

Overall the airlines have significantly improved their performance since recording a worst-ever year in terms of quality back in 2007. But far too often, passengers still aren’t enjoying their flight, Headley says. “People are still disgruntled.”
#26923
Industry-wide, the domestic airlines improved their performance in two of the four analyzed categories from the year previous: On-time arrivals increased to 81.8% from 80%, and mishandled bags fell to 3.07 from 3.35.

Headley says that airlines are posting more on-time arrivals and fewer mishandled bags as a result of reductions in seat capacity and fewer flights in the air. “When the system gets taxed by volume, things start to fracture and they go bad,” he says. “But the system is a little simpler now.”
#26924
Hawaiian Airlines boasted the best on-time performance of all the airlines in the report, at 93.4 percent; ExpressJet and American Airlines had the worst, at 76.9%. JetBlue had the least number of denied boardings, with just 0.01 per 1,000 passengers; SkyWest had the most, with 2.32 per 1,000.

Virgin America had the fewest mishandled bags, with 0.87 per 1,000 passengers; American Eagle had the most, with 5.80 per 1,000. And Southwest Airlines led the pack in terms of fewest customer complaints, just 0.25 per 1,000 passengers, while United had the most, 4.24 per 1,000.
#26925
The second-ranked airline in terms of overall quality was low-cost airline Jet Blue, which posted better-than-average performance in on-time arrivals, mishandled bags and customer complaints. AirTran Airways came in third place, followed by Delta Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines.

The last place finisher, fourteenth-ranked United Airlines, came in well below average in all four measured criteria; 77.4 percent on-time arrivals, 1.83 denied boardings per 1,000 passengers, 3.87 mishandled bags per 1,000 passengers, and 4.24 customer complaints per 1,000 passengers.
#26926
Virgin America posts strong numbers in most of the AQR’s criteria: The airline had 83.5 percent of all flights arrive on time in 2012, compared with the industry average of 81.8%; it mishandled 0.87 bags per 1,000 passengers, well below the average of 3.07; and  it denied boarding to 0.07 ticketed passengers per 1,000, significantly below the average of 0.97.

Only the airline’s number of customer complaints â€"1.5 per 1,000 passengers â€" came in slightly high, just above the industry average of 1.43 per 1,000.
#26927
The Airline Quality Rating report is the premier statistical study of major airline performance in the United States and has been conducted annually since 1991. It’s authored by Dr. Dean Headley, a professor at Wichita State University, and Dr. Brent Bowen, a professor at Purdue University.

The study looks at data that the airlines are mandated by law to report to the U.S. Department of Transportation over the last twelve months, focusing on four criteria: On-time arrivals, denied boardings, mishandled bags, and customer complaints. The final overall ranking is calculated as a weighted average of all four scores.

irgin America is the highest-quality major airline in the United States, according to the 2013 Airline Quality Rating report, an annual study of airline performance. The lowest-rated? United Airlines.

The privately owned airline â€" founded by billionaire entrepreneur Richard Branson â€" has only been operating in the U.S. since 2007, but after just five years in the air it leads the way in timely arrivals, baggage handling and customer service. This is the first time it’s been included in the AQR ratings.

Weird and Extreme / The Basel Rooster
April 09, 2013, 05:51:06 PM

We in the 21st century aren’t exactly unused to stupid, time-wasting lawsuits. But at least our judges have a tendency to slap them down with enough regularity to stop us losing all faith in the system. The same can’t be said for their medieval counterparts. In 1474, a Swiss rooster was discovered to have laid an eggâ€"something roosters typically lack the, uh, equipment to do. Rather than dismiss it as an obvious case of mistaken identity, the townsfolk had the rooster arrested and put on trial for demonic possession.

Yeah: a real trial, in a real court, with real judges. People at the time believed a possessed rooster could give birth to a Basiliskâ€"a monster so evil it got a whole Harry Potter book devoted to it. Faced with this imminent danger, the judges sentenced the rooster to be burnt at the stakeâ€"a feat so uniquely stupid they felt compelled to repeat it 300 years later. -- http://listverse.com/

"North Korea should stop behaving in this way and make the right choice for the future of the Korean nation."

South Korean firms have invested an estimated $500m (£327m) in the site since it opened in 2004. The complex generates about $96m for the North Korean economy every year.

About 475 South Korean workers and factory managers remain in Kaesong, with 77 expected to return across the border on Tuesday.

The warning to foreign residents in the South comes a week after North Korea told overseas embassies in Pyongyang that they should consider evacuating staff, warning their safety could not be guaranteed if war breaks out. No embassies are thought to have acted on the advice.

The prime minister, Shinzo Abe, said his government would take "every possible measure to protect the lives and safety of the Japanese people".

The closure of Kaesong, the last symbol of rapprochement between the two Koreas, marks a serious deterioration in cross-border ties. The move is also a sign of how far the North's leader, Kim Jong-un, may be prepared to go to foment crisis on the peninsula, given that a prolonged closure would deprive his regime of an important source of hard currency.

South Korea's president, Park Geun-hye, described the suspension as "very disappointing" and said investors would now shun the North.

"Investment is all about being able to anticipate results and trust and when you have the North breaking international regulations and promises like this and suspending Kaesong while the world is watching, no country in the world will invest in the North," Park told a cabinet meeting.
#26946
Amid the bluster of recent weeks â€" during which the North has threatened to launch a nuclear attack on the US â€" the regime appears to have made good on its threat to withdraw its workers from the Kaesong industrial complex.

None of the 53,000 North Korean workers at the site, located just north of the border, arrived for work on Tuesday morning â€" a day after Pyongyang accused the South of turning the jointly run zone into "a hotbed of war".

The suspension of all operations at the site momentarily shifted attention from North Korea's east coast where, according to reports, preparations were being made to test launch at least one medium-range missile, possibly as early as Wednesday.

In response, Japan deployed PAC-3 missile interceptors in Tokyo on Tuesday. Japan has said it will shoot down North Korean missiles in the highly unlikely event that they fly towards its territory.

Regime says visitors might get hurt if war starts, while workers boycott joint factories and missile test talk heightens.

Justin McCurry in Seoul
guardian.co.uk, Tuesday 9 April 2013 08.05 BST

As the world waits to see if North Korea launches a ballistic missile, the regime has attempted to raise tensions further, warning foreigners living in South Korea to make evacuation plans because the peninsula is on the brink of war.

"We do not wish harm on foreigners in South Korea should there be a war," the official KCNA news agency quoted an official from a North Korean organisation calling itself Korea Asia-Pacific Peace Committee as saying.

The KCNA report did not offer details and there are reportedly no signs of a military buildup near the border dividing the Korean peninsula, located less than 40 miles from the South Korean capital, Seoul.

Analysts noted that Pyongyang had issued similar threats in the past, adding that this latest warning is designed to elicit aid and political concessions from Seoul and Washington.

History / The origin of toasting
April 09, 2013, 04:11:30 PM
Toasting Began In Ancient Greece

When we make a toast at dinner parties today, most of us really have no idea where this tradition began, or for what reason. In ancient Greece, as it turns out, a dinner host would always take the first sip of wine to assure guests that the wine was not poisonedâ€"hence the phrase “drinking to one’s health.”

The tradition of toasting continued in ancient Rome, but with an addition that gave the custom it’s current name: Romans would drop a piece of toasted bread into each wine glass, so as to temper undesirable tastes or excessive acidity. So today we might make a toast to happiness, but back in ancient times it was a matter of life and death! -- http://listverse.com/

What dose is used?

The appropriate dose of biotin depends on several factors such as the user’s age, health, and several other conditions. At this time there is not enough scientific information to determine an appropriate range of doses for biotin. Keep in mind that natural products are not always necessarily safe and dosages can be important. Be sure to follow relevant directions on product labels and consult your pharmacist or physician or other healthcare professional before using.

There is no recommended dietary allowance (RDA) established for biotin. The adequate intakes (AI) for biotin are 7 mcg for infants 0-12 months, 8 mcg for children 1-3 years, 12 mcg for children 4-8 years, 20 mcg for children 9-13 years, 25 mcg for adolescents 14-18 years, 30 mcg for adults over 18 years and pregnant women, and 35 mcg for breast-feeding women.

8)
#26965
Are there interactions with medications?

It is not known if this product interacts with any medicines.

Before taking this product, talk with your health professional if you take any medications.

Are there interactions with herbs and supplements?

There are no known interactions with herbs and supplements.

Are there interactions with foods?

Egg whites

Raw egg white contains a substance that binds biotin in the intestine and keeps it from being absorbed. Eating 2 or more uncooked egg whites daily for several months has caused biotin deficiency that is serious enough to produce symptoms.
#26966
Are there safety concerns?

Biotin is LIKELY SAFE for most people when taken appropriately and by mouth. Biotin is well tolerated when used at recommended dosages.

Special precautions & warnings:

Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Biotin is POSSIBLY SAFE when used in recommended amounts during pregnancy and breast-feeding.

Kidney dialysis: People receiving kidney dialysis may need extra biotin. Check with your health care provider.
#26967
How does it work?

Biotin is an important component of enzymes in the body that break down certain substances like fats, carbohydrates, and others.

There isn’t a good laboratory test for detecting biotin deficiency, so this condition is usually identified by its symptoms, which include thinning of the hair (frequently with loss of hair color) and red scaly rash around the eyes, nose, and mouth. Nervous system symptoms include depression, exhaustion, hallucinations, and tingling of the arms and legs. There is some evidence that diabetes could result in biotin deficiency.
#26968
How effective is it?

Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database rates effectiveness based on scientific evidence according to the following scale: Effective, Likely Effective, Possibly Effective, Possibly Ineffective, Likely Ineffective, Ineffective, and Insufficient Evidence to Rate.

The effectiveness ratings for BIOTIN are as follows:

Likely effective for...

Treating and preventing biotin deficiency. Symptoms of deficiency include thinning of the hair (often with loss of hair color), and red scaly rash around the eyes, nose, and mouth. Other symptoms include depression, listlessness, hallucinations, and tingling in the arms and legs. There is some evidence that cigarette smoking may cause mild biotin deficiency.

Possibly ineffective for...

Skin rash in infants (seborrheic dermatitis).

Insufficient evidence to rate effectiveness for...

Hair loss. There is some preliminary evidence that hair loss can be reduced when biotin is taken by mouth in combination with zinc while a cream containing the chemical compound clobetasol propionate (Olux, Temovate) is applied to the skin.

Diabetes. Biotin alone doesn’t seem to affect blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes. However, there is some evidence that a combination of biotin and chromium (Diachrome, Nutrition 21) might lower blood sugar in people with diabetes, whose diabetes is poorly controlled by prescription medicines.

Diabetic nerve pain. There is some evidence that biotin can reduce nerve pain in people with diabetes.

Brittle fingernails and toenails. Biotin might increase the thickness of fingernails and toenails in people with brittle nails.

Other conditions.

More evidence is needed to rate biotin for these uses.

Biotin

What is it?

Biotin is a vitamin that is found in small amounts in numerous foods.

Biotin is used for preventing and treating biotin deficiency associated with pregnancy, long-term tube feeding, malnutrition, and rapid weight loss. It is also used orally for hair loss, brittle nails, skin rash in infants (seborrheic dermatitis), diabetes, and mild depression.

6th Plague. Boils. Certain types of flies that bite can leave behind boils. The bites get infected, they turn in to boils.

7th Plague. Fire and Hail. Ash in the air causes a mixture of ash and water. The ash, very high in the air, causes the water to freeze so when it falls it is hail and not rain. The fire? I saw this amazing picture in Nat. Geo. of a volcanic eruption. There was red lightning. It was amazing to see bright red lightning. Why is it red? Chemicals in the ash makes red lightning. So fire in the sky, and hail.

8th Plague. Locusts. Locusts come about when the ground is very damp. They bury their eggs in the sand about 4-6 inches. After record amount of hail the ground would be very wet allowing the locusts to form.

9th Plague. Darkness. Ash in the air. After an eruption in 1815 there was darkness for 600 kilometers. After Krakatoa it was dark for even farther for days.

10th Plague. Death of First born. In Egypt the first born was king. They would be the one to lead the family after the father died. When food was scarce the first born ate first and some times was the only one to eat. After locusts ate every thing there was only grain locked in vaults. The hail got it wet, locust feces, it made it moldy. And so when only the first born ate, they were the only ones killed by moldy grain.

History / The Science Behind The 10 Plagues Of Egypt
April 09, 2013, 09:46:02 AM
http://www.abovetopsecret.com/

The Plagues happened at the same time as a massive volcano eruption. The volcano Santorini sent ash in to the air effecting the surrounding area. The ash is found in Cairo and the Nile River, proven by testing the composition of the ash. This volcanic eruption happened between 1500-1650BC while the Plagues happened between 1400-1550BC. So it fits there.

1st Plague. River ran red LIKE blood. But there is a common algae plume called the Red Tide. This makes the river, or any water, look red like blood. Why did this happen? The ash changes the PH level of the river allowing the algae to bloom.

2nd Plague. Frogs. The algae is killing fish. Fish eat frog eggs. No fish, record number of frogs. Frogs can't live in polluted water and so leave the river.

3rd and 4th Plague. Lice and flies. The translation can actually be lice, fleas, gnats, or midges. But you have riverfull of dead fish, and now dead frogs. This brings the insects of the 3rd and 4th Plague.

5th Plague. Pestilence. Flies, dead frogs, dead fish, easy enough, no?

"I'm sorry"

My fiancé and I are fortunate enough that we don't fight (too) often, and when we do' it's usually hunger-induced. However, when I am driven to the point of crazy and my low blood sugar turns into an assassination of his character, I need to remember to leave the room, take a few deep breaths - or sips of wine - and apologize. When an irrational fight arises out of a silly situation, the best thing to do is to apologize before it escalates into something bigger, and a lot meaner. He's not always the enemy. Sometimes hormones, or even lack of calories are the culprits.

"Good morning. Let's get frisky!"

Perhaps you shouldn't use that quote verbatim, but let him know that if he wants to be intimate with you, he needs to set the stage in the morning. According to Sharyn Wolf, LCSW, marriage counselor and author of How to Stay Lovers for Life, you've got to "stroke the mind before you stroke the behind." If you want to have sex that night, foreplay begins that morning, so send him suggestive texts throughout the day. He'll get the idea.

"I'm listening"

Men communicate differently than women, tending toward reticence when they're upset. When this happens, don't badger him, but do let him know that you're there for him, and when he does begin to talk through his issues, don't interrupt him or offer any unsolicited opinions. Let him feel safe and unjudged. According to Mindfulness and Acceptance: Expanding the Cognitive-Behavioral Tradition, couples that really hear each other are happier in their relationships, and experience lower levels of depression and anxiety.

"I'm on your side"

"Find a way to let your partner know, on a daily basis, that you're in his corner," says Dr. Shannon Kolakowski, psychologist and author of the forthcoming book, When Depression Hurts Your Relationship. "You might show your loyalty by standing up for your guy when he feels the world is against him. Let him know you support what he's passionate about. Show him that you value what he values. This adds a sense of teamwork, security, and intimacy to your relationship."

"I trust you"

You've probably got this one covered, but communicating it is all in the timing. "The best time to share your feelings with your guy is just before or during sex," says Georgianna Donadio, PhD, relationship expert and author of Changing Behavior: Immediately Transform Your Relationships with Easy to Learn Proven Communication Skills. "At that time, levels of oxytocin, a hormone that enhances feelings of trust, love and intimacy, are elevated, making it the very best moment to love talk with your partner. It's also the ideal time to let him know what you want from him in the relationship, as he will be the most receptive and open."

"Thank you"

It's easy to overlook the small gestures, like when he swaps out his toothbrush head for yours or straightens up the apartment even if you're not having friends over. Instead of issuing a passive aggressive, "it's about time!" thank him. "Catch him doing something right every day," says says Lisa L. Payne, life transitions coach and author of What If They Knew: Secrets of an Impressive Woman. "Whether it's that he made your coffee just the way you like it, or holds the door for you, tell him how much you appreciate his efforts and, above all, be specific about what he did and how it made you feel. That way, he'll know exactly what he's done well, and he'll do it more often."

"You look handsome"

It may sound obvious, but men enjoy a good ego-stroking, especially when they're not trying to impress. "Whenever my fiancé groggily tells me I look nice in the morning, before I head out the door for work, it makes me feel unstoppable for the rest of the day," says New Yorker Charles C., 30. "It's one thing to hear it if we're going out to a nice place, but when she tells me I look dapper when I'm on my way to the office, it gives me a renewed confidence."

Science and Research / Red Tide
April 09, 2013, 09:17:35 AM
The Red Tide is a terrifying phenomenon that haunts the Earth’s coastlines. At certain times of year, the waters may turn a rust color as thousands of tiny seaweeds known as (Algera pelagius) multiply after mysterious influxes of nutrients, often in combination with temperature changes. The algae is rapidly absorbed by shellfish, and is extremely neurotoxic. The highly lethal bloom may rapidly paralysis limbs, and even worse, it anesthetizes the respiratory pathways upon exposure through contaminated shellfish. The Red Tide is considered to be the basis of the Biblical Plague where the waters turned to blood, and was noted to have caused the death of one of Captain George Vancouver’s crew upon the navigation of Western Canada. States and provinces have been closed to harvesting as a result of “paralytic shellfish poisoning” threats. In addition to human victims, entire beaches have been covered dead seabirds and ducks that were exposed to the toxic algae. -- http://listverse.com/

If I may throw in my two cents and offer my humble opinion, I personally don’t find this one of Picasso’s better works. I am a huge fan of Picasso, I’ve made that clear on this blog several times (don’t like the man, love the art). And when you look at the entirety of Picasso’s prolific work, especially his earlier pieces and the Blue Period, his depth, his range, etc, you are reminded, lest you forget, of what the man was truly capable of. In contrast, this painting looks weak. Garish and tacky. It looks like he’s putting one over on us and laughing his ass off. It also mocks and demeans and objectifies his muse, and that’s not cool in my book. But again, just my ever-so-humble opinion. Ok, I’ll shut up now.

Two of Picasso's lovers, Marie-Thérèse Walter and Jacqueline Roque (who became his wife) killed themselves. Marie-Thérèse hanged herself four years after his death. Roque shot herself in 1986, 13 years after Picasso died.

from Misfortunes of a Mistress â€" Marie-Thérèse Walter and “Le Reve”, http://artmodel.wordpress.com/

So what’s the big deal about Le Reve anyway? Well, here on Museworthy, the big deal is that the model for the painting was Picasso’s long-suffering mistress Marie-Thérèse Walter. Picasso met the pretty young blond in 1927 at the Galeries Lafayette in Paris. She was 18 years old. Picasso was 45, and still married to his wife Olga Khokhlova. Immediately, Picasso became infatuated, and he and Marie-Thérèse began a secret affair. Soon, she would become arguably Picasso’s most famous muse.

Le Reve, or “The Dream”, is said to have been painted in just one afternoon. With simplistic lines and brash colors, the painting is representative of how Picasso saw Marie-Thérèse; as an object of sex. Not an equal, not a life partner, not a wife, not even as a friend, but a plaything, a source of sexual arousal and gratification for the middle-aged artist. Picasso is hardly subtle about it either. Look closely at Marie-Thérèse’s face in the painting. What do you see there in the split at the top? Looks like a penis, right? Picasso’s penis! Classy touch there, Pablo. Ok, you’re horny for the girl. We get it! And notice that it’s she who’s doing the “dreaming”, apparently of Picasso and his member. Give me a break.

One of the new products of Philam Life is Money Tree, “a one-payment life insurance and investment plan whose various funds have yielded returns of eight percent to 15 percent per annum.”

Mendoza said this plan gives policyholders the opportunity to invest in high-performing funds that take advantage of the country’s booming economy. It also offers life insurance protection to secure the family’s future.

Another product, Family Secure, “is a high-value insurance plan that can be converted into a retirement fund as the insured person gets older.”

The firm’s Wealth Management Forum held at the Cebu City Sports Club was part of the company’s initiative to boost financial literacy in the country.

Mendoza pointed out that there are two things people should consider in growing their money through investments. One is to invest with a long-term mindset and second, is to invest only with a stable and solid institution that has a track record of fulfilling promises.

He said a key toward real wealth management and making intelligent investment decisions is education. A successful investor must have a combination of attitude, industry knowledge and an investor’s mindset, as well as access to appropriate financial instruments.

“As interest rates continue to decline, you should take time to look for investment instruments that would keep at par with your expectations,” said Enriquez. “You need to match investments with your goals.”

Mendoza said it is never too late and there is no wrong time to invest long-term, amid fears of market fluctuations.

Enriquez said the stock market’s record-breaking performance, almost hitting the 7,000 level shortly after the investment grade status was announced, is already a clear sign that the country is experiencing sustainable growth.

“For those who want to take advantage of the booming economy, now is the best time to invest. The party has just started,” he said.

He cited time and savings deposits, which are currently earning low annual interest rates at 2.75 percent or 0.375 percent, respectively, or even less.

During his talk, Philam Life president and chief executive officer Rex Mendoza said deposits are good for short-term needs but when one’s goal is long-term, other instruments may be considered.

Philam Life, for one, is promising returns of at least eight percent in an insurance and investment plan.

Government officials expect similar upgrades by two other ratings agencies: Moody’s Investors Service and Standard & Poor’s Ratings Service.

Enriquez pointed out that the investment grade status also means lower interest rates.

But, while this presents opportunities, in that it boosts lending and helps companies who want to restructure their loans, Enriquez warned that the upgrade could also have a negative impact on individual investors who rely exclusively on interest to grow their investments.

He said most Filipinos have placed their hard-earned money in low-yielding accounts, which are simply eroded by inflation.

RATHER than let money sleep, top officials of an insurance firm said now is “the best time” to place money in various investment instruments, given the country’s positive economic performance and outlook.

A recent upgrade from Fitch Ratings supports the country’s claim of a sustainable growth, said Rolan Enriquez, Philam Life director of agencies for Central and East Visayas and Mindanao, in a forum last Friday.

An investment-grade status, similar to what Fitch has given the Philippines, is confirmation that the country is financially sound and capable of paying back its debts.

DHA can only be found in oily fish like salmon, albacore tuna, lake trout and catfish. The American Heart Association recommends eating fish at least twice a week, or you can take fish oil or vegetarian-friendly algae supplements. You should be getting between 1,100 and 2,000 milligrams a day of Omega-3s, of which DHA should account for ten percent. Researchers have suggested that in the U.S., the average person would need to eat four times more fish to reach the advised amounts. So if you really want to sharpen your mind, start with your diet. --by Christie Wilcox

Taking a 1.16-gram-per-day DHA supplement for six months (equivalent to two or three weekly servings of oily fish) improved memory as well as the reaction times in the group as a whole, but men and women received different benefits. In women, episodic memory received the biggest boost, with DHA increasing accuracy and the number of pictures or words they could remember. In men, it was the working memory that improved most. Men that received DHA completed the working memory task a whopping 20 percent faster than the men in the placebo group.

This is the first randomized, placebo-controlled trial using DHA on younger adults, and the results are impressive. As the authors explain, these memory-related tests are the building blocks of more-complex cognitive behaviors that are common in everyday life. Thus, this study shows that DHA is important for brains of all ages, not just the youngest and oldest among us.
