Mourning the Victims of the Sandy Hook Shooting Around the World

By Nick Carbone
Dec. 17, 2012
http://newsfeed.time.com/

Though Friday’s tragic murder of 20 schoolchildren and seven adults happened in a small town in Connecticut, people across the globe were saddened by the unthinkable violence. Vigils and tributes were set up in churches and schools, on beaches and in sports arenas around the world.

looks like an agnostic hesitates while an atheist is sure.  the problem with the latter is that one is sure only of one's denial (that there is no god).  blazes.  the fact that one denies the existence of someone could only start from the premise that there is someone that one should deny.  how credible, then, is that denial?  what a trap.

i went out feeling stupid, lighted a cigarette, and wondered what hit me.

i promised myself right there and then never to go back to that clinic.  in case they try to follow up my spiritual treatment (whew!) with a call, having given my personal details for their record, i promised too that that would be the time when i'll tell them to back off or i'll write to newspapers about their operating on government time and government money to recruit adherents to their religion whose name i missed.

that's why i never want to discuss religion with anyone of a different faith.  it is an endless and ultimately useless discussion, convincing no one, much less me.
#26216
not wanting to insult them with their good intentions but bad means (ugh, they weren't paid by the government to spread their new-found fundamentalist faith), i agreed.  prayer from any christian faith is as good as my catholic prayers anyway.  but i looked out the window and saw a chapel right beside that clinic.  i came to the wrong building then, i thought to myself.

they charged me a good amount (for the prayers?), i insisted on a receipt, and was told by the receptionist that if only i could stay longer because they knew that my soul needed to be saved urgently.
#26217
about 10 years ago, i went to a public health office because i was told that the doctors there were the only practitioners of acupuncture in that locality.  i told them what it was in me that i wanted to be treated with acupuncture (cigarette smoking).  served me right...

all at once, they (there were three of them) hovered around me with the admonition that i smoked because the devil was at work in the core of my being.  i needed praying over and not acupuncture, they said.
#26218
i don't bother.  a dyed-in-the-wool oneness pentecostal won't listen anyway.  one thing with religion-- and i believe these times are for living the faith instead of basic evangelization-- is that one uses one's doctrinal knowledge of one's faith to defend that faith, not to be convinced of what a believer of another faith is saying.  i might as well talk to my cat.

The United States’ lax gun laws indisputably, beyond a shadow of a doubt, lead to more gun deaths. The statistics comparing the U.S. to other Western nations with tighter gun laws are staggering: the number of Americans who die in gun accidents in a given year is routinely many times higher than the total gun deaths in the U.K. In Britain in 2008, there were 39 gun murders; in the U.S. in 2009, there were 9,146â€"that’s right, even adjusted for our larger population, the American rate is 47 times higher. Japan’s recent gun bans have virtually eliminated gun murder in their country. In our country, the states with the strictest gun laws have the lowest rates of gun crime. (from Why the South Loves Guns, by David Sessions Dec 16, 2012, http://www.thedailybeast.com/)
#26268
some background:

There is no official definition of a "mass shooting," but FBI classifications describe the term as any incident in which a perpetrator kills four or more people, not including him or herself. Under that definition, 19 mass shootings have taken place since April 16, 2007, the date of the Virginia Tech massacre. That's a rate of more than one every four months -- only considering these most brutal examples. Other devastating shootings go largely unnoticed on the national stage. (from Mass Shootings: After 19 In Five Years, Many Thoughts And Prayers, No Real Answers, by Nick Wing and Katy Hall, http://www.huffingtonpost.com/)

Question and Answer / Re: will money make you happy?
December 16, 2012, 04:39:32 PM
my answer to the question is a qualified yes.

having money makes some aspects of our lives easier.  it is what money allows us to do, not money per se, that should make us happy.  even this begs for qualification.  it is what money allows us to do, positively, that should make us happy.

meanwhile, quarrels over money matters between a couple are the easiest of problems.  infidelity and ailments that no money can cure are way worse.

Health and Food / Re: Coffee as anti-oral cancer
December 14, 2012, 07:56:33 PM
Hildebrand says coffee is thought to contain other health-promoting substances besides caffeine.

“Two compounds for example have been studied for their anti-cancer properties and they have been found to possibly prevent cell replication and...prevent proliferation,” Hildebrand said.

Oral and pharyngeal cancer, although rare in the United States, are among the top 10 cancers worldwide.  Study leader Janet Hildebrand says it would be interesting to find out whether coffee consumption leads to a better outcome among people who have already been diagnosed with the diseases.

The study describing how coffee consumption can reduce the risk of oral / pharyngeal cancer is published in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

Health and Food / Re: Coffee as anti-oral cancer
December 14, 2012, 07:55:02 PM
In the study, there were 868 deaths among the participants, some of whom smoked.  So, according to study leader Janet Hildebrand, it appeared coffee did not have a protective effect.

Hildebrand, an epidemiologist and population expert with the American Cancer Society, says there was a proportionally higher risk of cancer among those who drank less of the hot beverage, compared to the cancer risk of those who consumed the most coffee each day.

“So it went down a little bit with each cup.  And the lowest risk found was with four, five, six cups per day,” Hildebrand said.

Investigators found only a slight health benefit in drinking two decaffeinated cups of coffee, but no advantage was found among tea drinkers, although tea, particularly green tea, is known to have other health benefits.

Coffee is one of the most popular beverages around the world.  Now comes word from a very large study of Americans that the stimulating drink might play a role in reducing the risk of oral/pharyngeal cancer, a particularly deadly form of the disease.

One of the many questions put to the 970,000 American men and women taking part in the 30-year-old Cancer Prevention Study involved their coffee-drinking habits.  The researchers -- population study experts with the American Cancer Society -- say the study has found that participants who drank about four cups of coffee per day reduced their risk of oral/pharyngeal cancer by 49 percent, compared to those who drank little or no coffee per day.

Oral cancer and cancer of the pharynx, or upper part of the throat, are especially aggressive forms of the disease that are very hard to treat.

The list below highlights the major signs to look out for to avoid becoming a victim of domestic violence. The common theme to look for is emotional abuse, as that typically precedes physical abuse. Beware if your mate:

Constantly uses misogynistic terms for the women -- ex-girlfriends, ex-wives, female relatives -- in his life.

Jealousy, put-downs and possessiveness make this list.

Forget about the Lifetime movies you’ve seen. Contrary to popular belief, a man doesn’t typically change from Prince Charming into a violent brute overnight. There are usually red flags early on in a romantic relationship that indicate that a man (or a woman) has an abusive personality type.
