My Christmas Wish

My Christmas wish this year is a simple one. I'm not asking for any presents, nothing fancy, as much as I like to look at expensive things, all these are just mere visuals. These are not important to me, merely material that are of no value. What is of value to me, always has been, and always will be, is the unity of my family. Their health, and the sense of togetherness.

Tho I cannot be home this Winter Christmas, as much as it pains me so, I wish that all of my family enjoy each other's warmth, presence, and a healthy and merry, Christmas Feast. Because that is the importance of Christmas; the celebration of Christ's Birth, and in thus completing the Holy Family: Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Thus, a family together in Christmas Even/Morning is the manifestation of that physical togetherness, that Christ Jesus himself was part of with his earthly mother and earthly step-father.

My Christmas Wish is that God Most Merciful showers His Graces on my beloved family and friends this Christmas. From the crowns of their heads, to the soles of their feet, to the inner beatings of their hearts and minds, may His presence permeate and perculate in them. And I know that my family celebrating Christmas : my Mother, my Father, brothers, sister, uncles, aunt, cousins, family friends; I will be with them in spirit.

That is my Christmas Wish. A million embraces, a million kisses goes out to My Familia!~

Love,
Bran.

Christmas Cleaning.

I figured since I can't be home for Christmas, I'll just make a Christmas Dinner here in my apartment. I'll invite some colleagues from work over and we can have our own little Christmas Celebration. This reminds me of a saying that an acquaintance told me, "You have to make the best of every and any situation." That saying holds true.

Perhaps, next Christmas I will be scheduled off so I can attend it and celebrate it at home.

Life is filled with unexpected hurdles, in this case, my being on-call the entire week.   :o
But, that is life. I just hope my parents can visit me in spring and especially my Mommy can cook my favorite: Bico Cake!

Ah, pohon pohon.

Yesterday, as I was coming back from Church, which is actually only a couple of blocks away from my apartment, I saw this woman who was limping towards my direction. I'm assuming it was a mini stroke. When passing her, I blurted out, 'Good Morning!'. At that moment, that lady replied, 'Good Morning!', with a smile that covered cheek to cheek. She had the brightest blue eyes I've ever seen.

How inspiring! I guess, happiness is a mentality, a point of view and the acceptance of that particular viewpoint. It is one's ability to work within the frame of the situation, for the personal betterment. I was so touched by her quick reply, and her bright blue eyes.

Excitement and joy are filling the air;
The lights add special decor.
We're shopping for Christmas gifts everywhere,
But are gifts what Christmas is for?
The wreaths and the trees and the parties
Aren't what we need to convey;
It's the birth of our Savior, Jesus,
The real reason for this holiday.

Under the tree the gifts enthrall,
But the nicest present of them all
Is filling our thoughts with those who care,
Wanting our Christmas joy to share.
To you, whom we're often thinking of,
We send our holiday joy and love.

There is something sweet in knowing that Christmas is on the way. Tho I cannot be home for Christmas, I am going to spend it with friends and celebrate Christmas Eve Mass and Christmas Morning Mass.

The moral of the story is that life is filled with unexpected hurdles. But in the end, the priority is and will always be-- GOD First, everything else second.

It is hard being a medical intern at times. When i the hospital floor we are expected to show no emotionality and attachment to patients, and are 'expected' to be professionally neutral.

How can one expect to stay neutral when a patient is crying in front of you after hearing her long-time husband has passed on the operating table?

I guess it is new to me, being a freshman intern. Identifying these problems with patients, analyzing their whole bodies and mental status, the plethora of possible cases that comes at you, the stressful hours, it seems like an eternity of information. Day and night we are expected to diagnose, prognose, establish action plan for the patient. Two things come to mind when doing this: Pathology, Pharmacology.
What is the disease affecting the patient, and what drugs can we give to treat the disease.

How ironic. That as a medical provider, one cannot help himself from getting sick. Due to the hours at work, exposure to sick patients, the medical doctor, the medical intern cannot help but get sick himself. Oh the irony of the situation: one who is expected to treat the patient does not have enough time to treat himself because of the hours of work.

In my view, medical providers should take emphasis on their own health and well being. We are no different to the patients we treat, still susceptible to the diseases we adrently study, treat, and defeat (sometimes loose the battle to). It is hard sometimes because while one works at a patient, studies hours, in the attempt to treat a patient, one can get sick himself. Afterall, even a Doctor, Medical Intern can die. It is just hard sometimes in this profession because we think we are immune to some disease/ailments just because we know it from top to bottom, how to treat it etc. I guess, there is nothing wrong in 'taking it easy' from time to time.

I love nurses.

During my first night of being on call, I was admitting patients on floor 2EAST, presenting 3 patients to the on-call Resident Physician that night. And one patient on the 3rd floor, a man who was admitted for hep-C induced cirrhosis as well as abdominal discomfort and in his own words, "I'm just not feeling so good, doc.." After taking his vitals, and finishing a thorough H&P, I was ready to present to the physician. But before doing so, I was taken to the side by Julie, the staff RN assigned to care for Mr. E.S that evening. She was a bit more cautious, as a veteran RN, and told me to make sure to ask the MD to order glycosylated hemoglobin on the patient.

As I talked to the patient, i noticed that he was a bit odd, showing some kind of oddity in mental status. I assumed an underlying psychotic behavior , but could not put my finger on what it was.

Then after talking to Julie, she was showing me where the water fountain/coffee machine was at (and i verily much needed caffeine at the time, lol) she also told me that Mr. E.S also was bipolar. Bingo! Truly, I admire and respect nurses for their quickness in diagnosing. I do learn alot just from talking to them and asking questions. One thing that I will implement early in my medical career is respect, and collboration with nurses. I believe that in order to become an effective physician, one needs to establish a healthy, working, mutually-beneficial relationship with the nurses.

Nurses Rock!!

I don't know if this applies to all Bol-anons, but I have noticed this from talking to my mother (a pure blooded Valenciana) and my auntie (also a pure blooded Valenciana), they end a sentence or a remark with "AN" or "LA".

Per se,

Mom: Doy, ning adto sija ning palit ug kandila, ngano, naay ka i hisgut para nija AN?

I think it is pretty much common , or at least generalized that Bol-anons are perhaps one of the most conservative and religious amongst many Filipino groups. Rarely does one get the chance to see and hear this than going to Bohol and talking to the elderly.

Older Bolanons end a sentence or a conversation with , "Pohon lagi, maluuy ang Ginoo," or , "Pohon pohon."

I have never heard this spoken so vividly and redundantly anywhere else besides in Bohol. Bohol and Bolanons, are probably one of the most conservative groups of people in the Philippines.

Water is composed of 2 elements: Hydrogen , Oxygen.

For these two molecules to be emulsified together to create water, there was a great Force to have catalyzed the event. The there were additions of Chlorine and Sodium and other elements.
Can we definitely prove that this all happened by mere chance? Absolutely not.

It was planned out.

December 19, 2010, 09:33:15 AM
In my view, the Bolanon dialect is filled with so many lexicons that distinguishes it from the larger Cebuano Dialect, to which Bol-anon is part of. There are distinct colloquialisms in Bohol, one that comes to mind is, "Ijara-Ijara" or "Ijara".

When I study this word, I can see the root word, "Ija", which trasliterally means "His/ Hers". "Ra" merely functions to emphasize the severe importance of the root.

However, when used in a sentence, or in a remark, "Ijara" is supposed emphasize some kind of disgust.

Per se, a man and woman go out on a date. The man buys 2 hotdogs, but instead of giving his date one hotdog, he consumes both of them in front of the woman. The woman, in disgust, exclaims, "IJARA!"

:)

Do you have any other examples of Uniquely Bol-anon phrases / diction?

Indeed it is.

My xgf sent me this poem many, many years ago.

It is the only letter of hers that I did not include in the pyre. It is so eerily cold, so soul penetrating, so deep in its message that I could not burn it as I did with her other letters. I read it from time to time, to remember the deepness of her Love for me, and of my past failings.

That I let such a flower slip by my fingers. It encourages me, motivates me to be a better person, and to never hurt another woman as I did her...

It was my pride, my stupid pride, that made me walk away from her, while she was crying tears of flood. I could have embraced her one more time, I could have ushered words to comfort her, but I did not. My pride in needing to show her that I was 'final' prevented my giving of compassion. The memory of her face, her voice calling out to me, and her hand outstretched to me still haunts me from time to time.

I do not want to repeat such an event, ever again. It was my past failure. And I hope she has forgiven me.

Poems and Poets / The Calling, Oh Its Constancy..
December 19, 2010, 06:02:45 AM
Once in time, with a glistening gleam, did my heart trust.
And to know that trusting the heart is but a foolish facade.
For the heart changes at a whim.
My heart. Your heart. Their heart. His heart. Her heart.

But, there is One Heart that is not fickle and baseless.
The Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ.

And I shall entrust to HIM all that I yearn for,
all that I shall want, all that I shall want in Life.

And it is with a prudent, fearless decision, that I will consider a Life in His Service
No longer shall I fear this thought, this constant pull
For it has been a constant force in my mind.

"Be a Priest"
When I wake up.

"Be a Priest"
When I work.

"Be a Priest"
When I talk amongst friends, amongst family, amongst loved ones.

'Be a Priest"
At the moment I lay down to sleep.

For years, have I feared this revelation,
only to put it to the side, thinking that as time passes,
so shall this 'silly' notion subside.

Yet it has not.
Why ?
It has grown all the more loud.
Even as I am in the hospital floor,
on call, post call, admission duties, write ups.

How shall I even consider?
Does it not get in the way of plans?
Yet...this notion has been in my mind even before my 'plans' came about.

So I shall continue to discern.
Continue to pray if this calling is truly the Way.

And I shall Pray.
Every Day.
To Lead me Home.

Poems and Poets / When Love Dies, The Flowers Fade
December 19, 2010, 05:50:22 AM
by: Neil Harding McAlister

Our passion once lit up the nights
As brilliant as the Northern Lights;
But just as evanescent, it would seem.
Cold reason told us, run in fear;
But love’s strange brightness drew us near,
Like moths into its hypnotizing beam.
Now cheerless luminescence creeps;
The light is there without the heat;
And what remains is just a frigid gleam.
Do you know where the feeling goes
As over us life’s seasons flow?
The love we shared and used to know
Has vanished like the melting snow --
A winter’s dream.

A sweet and fragile fantasy,
A sand castle beside the sea,
How can love stand against a rising tide?
The lover who was part of you,
Who bared his bleeding heart to you,
Is by the rushing waters washed aside.
The flood has doused affection’s fires,
Extinguishing our hearts’ desires,
And snuffing out our hopes and dreams besides.
With changing fortune’s ebb and flow
We watch love’s seasons come and go;
Bright promises we treasured so
Drowned in emotion’s undertow;
Our vows belied.

I know that when the passion dies
A mouthful of well-meaning lies
Is kinder, when the truth gets in the way.
A mournful chorus gathers ‘round
To serenade us with the sound
Of silence, when there’s nothing left to say.
You kill me with an empty kiss
To tell me I’ll get over this
And learn to love again another day.
But hearts are not like weathervanes
That veer with changing joy and pain.

December 19, 2010, 12:06:11 AM
Matthew 2: 1-12

2:1 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men [1] from the east came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose [2] and have come to worship him.” 3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; 4 and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. 5 They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:

6 “‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for from you shall come a ruler
who will shepherd my people Israel.’”

7 Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.” 9 After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11 And going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. 12 And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.

Bible Study / The Angel Appears to Joseph
December 18, 2010, 11:54:12 PM

18 This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. 19 Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.

20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, [Jesus is the Greek form of Joshua, which means the LORD saves.] because he will save his people from their sins."

22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel"[Isaiah 7:14]â€"which means, "God with us."
24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. 25 But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

legem dedisti vertice
in maiestate gloriae.

Gaude, gaude Emmanuel
Nascetur pro te, Israel.

Veni, O Iesse virgula,
ex hostis tuos ungula,
de spectu tuos tartari
educ et antro barathri.

Gaude, gaude Emmanuel
Nascetur pro te, Israel.

Veni, Clavis Davidica,
regna reclude caelica,
fac iter tutum superum,
et claude vias inferum.

Gaude, gaude Emmanuel
Nascetur pro te Israel.

Veni, veni O Oriens,
solare nos adveniens,
noctis depelle nebulas,
dirasque mortis tenebras.

Gaude, gaude Emmanuel
Nascetur pro te Israel.

Veni, veni, Rex Gentium,
veni, Redemptor omnium,
ut salvas tuos famulos
peccati sibi conscios.

Gaude, gaude Emmanuel
Nascetur pro te Israel.

Spirituality, for me, is important. It is the bond between man and his faith in God, it resonates that said relationship.

Immaculate Mary,
your praises we sing.
You reign now in Heaven
with Jesus our King.
Ave, Ave, Ave, Maria! Ave, Ave, Ave, Maria!

In Heaven the blessed
your glory proclaim;
On earth we your children
invoke your sweet name.
Ave, Ave, Ave, Maria! Ave, Ave, Ave, Maria!

We pray for our Mother,
the Church upon earth,
And bless, Holy Mary,
the land of our birth.
Ave, Ave, Ave, Maria! Ave, Ave, Ave, Maria!

We pray you, O Mother,
may God's will be done
We pray for His glory,
may his Kingdom come.
Ave, Ave, Ave, Maria! Ave, Ave, Ave, Maria!

Submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.
