Christine said she had apprehensions in reporting to authorities what was done to her since she was afraid that her mother would kill her.

When she could no longer bear the pain inflicted by her own mother, Christine sought the help of their barangay captain, Amancia Quinain.

In her affidavit, Quinain said she was having breakfast when Christine went to her house.

“I was shocked upon noticing Christine. She got inside the house, sobbing helplessly and blood was dripping from her lips and arms. Bruises were inflicted to different parts of her body,” she said.

Her 40-year-old mother Lucy (not her real name) was arrested by policemen last Wednesday.

When brought before the Cebu Provincial Prosecutors’ Office, Lucy chose not to undergo preliminary investigation which could have given her a chance to submit a counter-affidavit and refute the allegations.

This prompted Cebu Assistant Provincial Prosecutor Petronio Elesterio to elevate to the trial court the charges for violating Republic Act 9208 or the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act of 2003 and Republic Act 7610 or the Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act.

Lucy will face trial before the Regional Trial Court in Bogo City.

For P200 to P500, 13-year-old Christine (not her real name)  was forced by her mother to have sex with male customers in her native place in Tabogon town, north Cebu.

In the privacy of their home, her mother purportedly watched Christine who was helplessly exploited by a customer.

Her mother, at one time, held Christine at knifepoint as she was being sexually abused.

Christine had no other options but to give herself to customers otherwise her mother would kill her.

In one instance, she said her mother slit her arm with a scissor, beat her with a piece of wood, punched her mouth and kicked her whenever she refuses to accept customers.

“Gidagmalan ko ni mama kay dili man ko magpagamit sa tawo nga mipalit nako. (My mother inflicted physical harm on me because I refused to have sex or perform lewd acts with a male customer),” Christine said in her sworn statement a copy of which was obtained by Cebu Daily News.

Last February 4, her mother personally saw a customer performing lewd acts on her. Christine said her mother received P500 for the “service”.

The girl said she was again used by another man last February 18. Christine said she tried to escape but her mother held her legs, got a knife and threatened to kill her. She said she saw her mother receive P200 from the man.

MANILA, Philippinesâ€"UNA senatorial candidate Jack Enrile on Monday strongly condemned the NPA ambush in Misamis Oriental which resulted in the wounding of Gingoog City Mayor Ruth de Lara Guingona, wife of former Vice President Teofisto Guingona, Jr.

“The ambush of the party of Mayor Guingona is highly condemnable as she was just performing her duty of visiting her constituents on the occasion of their town fiesta,” said Enrile.

“Even though the NPA has apologized for the deed, the apology cannot remove the black mark it has stained further on the rebel movement which claims to fight for the people,” he added.

Enrile said that the ambush, in which two civilian bodyguards of the mayor were killed, is doubly condemnable because she is the wife of former Vice President Guingona, a respected former senator and leader of the people.

“The NPA attack was also an insult against the former vice president who is loved by the people for his courageous stand for human rights and civil liberty.”

Enrile added that the NPA should immediately cease its practice of demanding “revolutionary taxes” from candidates and businessmen “if it wants to show that it is fighting for the rights of the people.  People have the right to free and orderly elections.

The NPA would do well to respect this right instead of tampering with it. Otherwise, it will be shown as really against the exercise of democratic rights by the people.”

Prosecutors say there is no way of knowing how much money Ozarowski pocketed in the alleged scam, because so many of the donations were in cash.

There was $317 in the collection jar when she was arrested soliciting donations outside a supermarket on Easter, and investigators say there were at least two dozen jars in restaurants, pizzerias and stores across Long Island that Ozarowski collected from regularly over the past year.

More than 60 potential victims have called prosecutors since the arrest, along with dozens of cancer patients who have called just to vent their outrage.

"It wasn't just about the money," said Elizabeth Patricola, owner of "Paws N Claws" pet grooming, and a breast cancer survivor who befriended the young woman after she and her grandmother came to her shop in March 2012. "It was about the principle and the caring, the faith that we have in people. Everyone came together as a community to help. It broke my heart."

Ozarowski told various versions of having either ovarian cancer, stomach cancer, bone cancer and brain cancer, prosecutors said. Patricola, who has been cancer free for four years, became suspicious when the young woman explained not losing her hair after chemotherapy because of "special vitamins."

"I'm so mad and I'm so sad at the same time," said Denise Bambola, a next-door neighbor in the Selden community where Ozarowski grew up. "I held her. I let her call me mama. I took care of her. She hurt me deeply."

By FRANK ELTMAN | Associated Press â€" 1 hr 16 mins ago

MILLER PLACE, N.Y. (AP) â€" Those who took one look at Brittany Ozarowski had no doubt she was battling cancer. Her face was drawn and gaunt. She weighed a mere 80 pounds, hobbled gingerly on a cane, and complained of the toll chemotherapy and radiation treatments were taking on her fragile body.

Neighbors and friends wanted to help so much they gladly put donation jars on store counters, pulled cash out of their own pockets and organized fundraisers â€" including a dinner dance and a dog-washing event â€" that together raised tens of thousands of dollars. Ozarowski also had a website showing her in a wheelchair next to the plea: "Help Save My Life."

But then people began to wonder: Why didn't she lose her hair after chemotherapy? Why didn't she show up for a free exam at a neurologist? Why did she hang up when a man who ran a cancer charity offered $10,000 in treatments paid directly to a hospital?

The explanation from prosecutors hit this middle-class Long Island suburban community like a punch in the gut: The 21-year-old Ozarowski wasn't battling cancer at all, they say, but was scamming people out of their money to feed a growing addiction to heroin.

"There was no cancer, no chemotherapy or radiation," Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota said. "All there was was heroin and more heroin."

“Philippine Pride in Paris,” reported one dispatch about the  opening of the grand exhibit “Philippines: Archipel des Échanges (Philippines: Archipelago of Exchange)” last April 8 at the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris.

The exhibition is reportedly the most substantial and exhaustive exhibition of Philippine pre-Hispanic artifacts in recent memory. The fact that it is being held at the prestigious Musée du Quai Branly should buttress its significance.

But the wife of one high Philippine government functionary apparently didn’t know the importance of the event so that she came late and made a dramatic entrance while all of the dignitaries, such as French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault, were already seated.

Worse, she insisted on being seated next to her husband so that a chair had to be vacated for her.

During the viewing, the woman made crass remarks about the Philippine artifacts on exhibit. Pointing to the bulul and other Cordillera articles, she exclaimed: “Bakit dinala pa ito rito eh ang dami nito sa atin!” (Why should these be exhibited? These are common back home!).

As they say, you can take the person out of Culi-culi, but you cannot take Culi-culi out of the person.

Not that Filipinos got the best of French hospitality. An officer of one of the Philippine cultural institutions that helped mount the exhibit said  they didn’t even get to see it at the opening. “We were corralled by French security in the lobby and not allowed to enter. Can you believe that?”

“The opening of the exhibit was the worst zoo I have ever been to,” the officer added. “It had no redeeming factor.” -- http://lifestyle.inquirer.net/

If he does resign, Brillantes hopes that President Noynoy Aquino would appoint him ambassador somewhere in Eastern Europe. The wish only bolsters inklings of an exit scenario. Should the PCOS fail, Brillantes would be far from the line of fire: out of sight, out of mind.

Brillantes says that a European ambassadorship really was his preferred reward for lawyering for Aquino to the Presidency in 2010. Just that, the aged Comelec chief suddenly retired then. This further reveals a casual attitude towards laws and rules. An ambassador can be appointed only if there is a vacancy. First in line are career diplomats, over political appointees. And by rule, no one above 70 like Brillantes is ever posted â€" unless the appointer is callous.
#26029
Brillantes says that without the human-readable source code, the PCOS will revert to the binary code, which is solely computer-readable. Apart from this being inconsistent with the law and contract, it will not make for credible balloting. Sure, the PCOS can run on the binary code, but will the count be accurate? Will anybody ever know if it isn’t?

To verify the correctness of the PCOS count, the law also requires a random manual audit of at least one PCOS precinct per congressional district. But this too the Comelec has muddled. The Comelec will select the precincts to be audited a week before Election Day, eliminating the element of surprise in randomizing.
#26030
Of late Brillantes nervously has been claiming that all’s set for Election Day â€" all except, well, for the all-important PCOS “source code.” The source code is the set of human-readable commands that will enable the PCOS to recognize genuine ballots, count the votes, and transmit the tallies. Not only does the law require the Comelec to show it to political parties and computer experts at least six months before Election Day. It is also a must for credibility of the results. But here Brillantes is, barely three weeks from the May 13 balloting, still with no source code in hand.

At this point, Brillantes already is in breach of the automation law. PCOS supplier Smartmatic of Venezuela, meanwhile, is in breach of its P9-billion contract with the Comelec. No source code is forthcoming, for Smartmatic does not have it either. The real software owner is Dominion of Canada, which merely licensed Smartmatic in 2009 to lease it to the Comelec for P7.2 billion in the 2010 presidential election. Back then, although required by law and contract, Smartmatic also didn’t submit any source code. This became known only in 2012, when Smartmatic and Dominion sued each other in the US over, among others, profits from the plum Comelec deal. By then Brillantes already had bought, for another P1.8 billion, 82,000 erstwhile leased PCOS units. Brillantes couldn’t take to task his Comelec predecessors of 2010 for signing up the Venezuelan impostor, for he too is already in too deep with it. The automation law states that whoever the voting machine supplier is should also be the software owner-developer. Past and present Comelec bosses ignored the proviso.
#26031
The setbacks at the SC truly were offending for Brillantes. More so since, there already have been two others since the start of the year. First, the SC stopped the Comelec from tearing down the oversized, misplaced senatorial endorsement posters at the Bacolod City Catholic cathedral. Then it overturned the Comelec’s unseating of a Cavite town mayor. And latest, the rebuke on the Comelec in the party-lists and campaign airtime. Four successive defeats indeed can discomfit even veteran lawyers, more so one as thin-skinned as the Comelec head.

The PCOS skeptics have good reason to conjecture an escape plan, though. Only weeks ago the PCOS, whose multibillion-peso purchase by the Comelec Brillantes so avidly has been justifying, had failed its latest of many test runs. Of 20 units scattered nationwide, some wouldn’t take in ballots or count the votes; others wouldn’t start at all. Embarrassed, Brillantes, who earlier dared the critics to observe the test runs, refused to divulge the accuracy grade. It could only have been below the 99.995-percent requirement of the Automated Election System Act of 2008, the doubters sneered.
#26032
GOTCHA By Jarius Bondoc (The Philippine Star) | Updated April 22, 2013 - 12:00am

The top defender and the critics of the PCOS were equally aghast, though for different reasons, with the Supreme Court ruling last week. The SC had barred the Comelec from curbing campaign advertising airtime. Seeing it to be overstepping the Comelec’s job, chairman Sixto Brillantes right away offered to resign. Suspicious, the poll watchdog Kontra Daya asked what Brillantes’s real motive was to want to leave. Was he in fact evading a looming failure of Election 2013 due to the PCOS (precinct count optical scanners)?

Other opponents of the PCOS voting machines were as leery of Brillantes’s overture to step down. Two weeks earlier the Automated Election Systems (AES) Watch, of university profs and info-technologists, pondered too if he was looking for an exit scenario. The SC had said then that any group, even if not penurious or marginalized, could join the party-list balloting. Brillantes moaned that the ruling sets back his electoral reforms. But he was a lawyer of 50 years, used to court victories and defeats. So the AES Watch saw in his public carping the makings of a handy excuse from potential collapse of the PCOS.

The peso declined 0.2 percent to 41.127 per dollar as of 10:25 a.m. in Manila, according to Tullett Prebon Plc. One-month implied volatility, a measure of expected moves in the exchange rate used to price options, was little changed at 4.72 percent.

The yield on 3.875 percent bond due November 2019 fell eight basis points, or 0.08 percentage point, to 2.73 percent, according to Tradition Financial Services. The rate is at the lowest since the notes were first sold in November.

Bangko Sentral is always ready to intervene to keep the foreign-exchange market orderly, Assistant Governor Cyd Amador told reporters on April 19. The monetary authority may deploy prudential measures more actively to augment traditional monetary policy and prevent asset bubbles from forming, Deputy Governor Nestor Espenilla said separately on April 19.

The Philippine peso fell, halting a three-day advance, while government bonds and stocks rose on speculation the central bank will cut the interest rate on its special deposit accounts for a third time this year.

Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, which meets April 25 to review policy, reduced the rate it pays on 1.9 trillion pesos ($46 billion) in its special accounts by about half a percentage point each in January and March. The central bank isn’t ruling out a further cut in the so-called SDA rate and is “always thinking of additional measures” to manage liquidity, Felipe Medalla, a member of the authority’s Monetary Board, said on April 18. The Philippine Stock Exchange Index rose above 7,000 for the first time.

“The consensus is for the BSP to cut the SDA rate by another 50 basis points at this week’s meeting to bring down its cost,” said Ricky Cebrero, head of Treasury at Philippine National Bank in Manila. The rate is currently at 2.5 percent.

AFTER MERKEL

Von der Leyen quickly made it clear she was not going to be a token mum in the cabinet - Merkel and then-Education Minister Annette Schavan had no children.

In a bid to counter Germany's low birth rate, she co-opted an SPD proposal to introduce paid parental leave for working parents, a move which angered party conservatives.

She has tried to change German attitudes towards children, clouded as they are by the Nazi campaign to encourage procreation.

"In the United States people would say 'Oh, seven children, you are so blessed," von der Leyen told Reuters in 2005. But in Germany the reaction was: "Seven children and a job - how are you going to manage that?"

How does she manage it?

Good planning is the key, she says. Unlike many other German politicians, she is rarely seen socializing in Berlin, preferring instead to spend weekends at home in Lower Saxony with her family.

She doesn't have a flat in the German capital, instead sleeping in a small ministry room with a bed and shower.

MOTHER OF SEVEN

A mother of seven who was born in Brussels and lived in Britain and the United States, von der Leyen grew up surrounded by politics. Her father, Ernst Albrecht, was a CDU state premier for Lower Saxony from 1976 to 1990.

She is a rarity in German politics in that she came to the game late, when she was 42, following a career in medicine.

Von der Leyen speaks fluent English and French. She studied at the London School of Economics from 1977 to 1980, but used the pseudonym "Rose Ladson" due to concerns she might be targeted, as the daughter of a prominent politician, by left-wing guerrillas who were active in West Germany at the time.

She graduated from medical school in 1987 and worked as a physician until 1992. While raising her fast-growing family, she lived in California from 1992 to 1996 while her husband Heiko taught at Stanford University. She met him at a university choir in Goettingen.

Von der Leyen is resented by some for seeming too perfect. She was once hoisted out of a barrel on German entertainment TV by Hugh Jackman and kissed by George Clooney after handing him an award for promoting peace.

She is admired by others for her ability to juggle a demanding career and family, while skillfully representing Germany on her frequent trips abroad.

"Von der Leyen can go to Harvard or the Sorbonne and give big speeches in English and French," said Markus Kerber, managing director of the BDI industry association, who knows her well. "For me she represents a new generation of Germans who can communicate internationally."

In 2003 she was elected to the Lower Saxony state assembly and in 2005 Merkel picked her as her family minister.

Most believe that von der Leyen, who regularly polls among the most popular politicians in Germany, remains too important to Merkel and the party to dump, especially with the election looming. The showdown may burnish von der Leyen's image among some voters, even if it has infuriated conservatives in the ruling Christian Democrats (CDU).

Just one year ago, Merkel summarily fired her Environment Minister Norbert Roettgen after he bungled an important regional election. Over the past decade, she has found ways to neutralize other potential rivals, from former CDU parliamentary leader Friedrich Merz to state premiers Roland Koch, Guenther Oettinger and Christian Wulff.

Von der Leyen, a trained gynaecologist, has a history of pushing her party towards the political centre even if it means poaching ideas from the left-leaning Social Democrats (SPD).

Her popularity stems from her engaging speaking style, down-to-earth manner and the determined way in which she's pushed her issues, notably a drive to create more childcare facilities in a country of stay-at-home mothers.

Still, her threat last week to break ranks and back an opposition bill to establish quotas for women on company boards was seen as an act of betrayal in some conservative circles.

BERLIN (Reuters) - The political wilderness in Germany is filled with once-powerful conservative party barons, overly confident men who dared to challenge Angela Merkel and lost.

But never before has the German chancellor had to contend with another woman, a popular member of her own cabinet, standing up to her in public in the way Labour Minister Ursula von der Leyen did last week.

The 54-year-old von der Leyen forced Merkel to retreat on, of all things, women's rights in a riveting public showdown just five months before an election.

"It's like von der Leyen threw a stick of dynamite into the coalition," said Gero Neugebauer, political scientist at Berlin's Free University. "You have to go back to the 1970s to find a minister who stood up to a chancellor. She made Merkel look weak."

Political analysts, conservative party members and German voters are now watching to see if there will be any fallout.

TG Guingona blasts NPA for 'ambush' on his mom
ABS-CBNnews.com
Posted at 04/21/2013 4:10 PM | Updated as of 04/21/2013 4:22 PM

MANILA â€" Senator Teofisto “TG” Guingona III condemned the acts of the New People’s Army (NPA) on Saturday night that left her mother, Gingoog City Mayor Ruth de Lara Guingona, injured.

In an interview with ANC on Sunday afternoon, Guingona said: “No one but the President has the right to execute laws. It is not the NPA. We only have one government in this country.”

His mother sustained gunshot wounds in a firefight between police and members of the NPA past 11 p.m. on Saturday night.

She was on her way home from a barangay fiesta in Alagatan in Misamis Oriental, when around 50 men blocked her convoy upon reaching Sitio Dumayokod.

A firefight ensued between the members of the NPA and Guingona’s six police escorts, which lasted for about 10 minutes.

Her driver and bodyguard died from the incident.

A certain Ka Oris of the Communist Party of the Philippines-NPA-New Democratic Front in Central Mindanao claimed responsibility for the incident. He said, however, that they were just conducting a checkpoint and it was the police who first fired on them.

The senator said it’s ironic that the victims are the ones following the law. “No one has the right to usurp the law of the land,” he saidm adding authorities are now undergoing hot pursuit operations against the NPA members.

The senator said his mother is not in a life-threatening condition and that "she is stable, but in pain.”

“She has several shrapnel wounds in her legs and arms. She also has fractures bones in hips and arms,” Sen. Guingona said.

He said his mother will have to undergo an operation, which could be done in Cagayan de Oro where she was brought on Sunday morning.

TO OUR GOOD AND LOYAL SUBJECTS:

After pondering deeply the general trends of the world and the actual conditions obtaining in Our Empire today, We have decided to effect a settlement of the present situation by resorting to an extraordinary measure.

We have ordered Our Government to communicate to the Governments of the United States, Great Britain, China and the Soviet Union that Our Empire accepts the provisions of their Joint Declaration.

To strive for the common prosperity and happiness of all nations as well as the security and well-being of Our subjects is the solemn obligation which has been handed down by Our Imperial Ancestors and which lies close to Our heart.

Indeed, We declared war on America and Britain out of Our sincere desire to ensure Japan's self-preservation and the stabilization of East Asia, it being far from Our thought either to infringe upon the sovereignty of other nations or to embark upon territorial aggrandizement.

But now the war has lasted for nearly four years. Despite the best that has been done by everyone â€" the gallant fighting of the military and naval forces, the diligence and assiduity of Our servants of the State, and the devoted service of Our one hundred million people â€" the war situation has developed not necessarily to Japan's advantage, while the general trends of the world have all turned against her interest.

Moreover, the enemy has begun to employ a new and most cruel bomb, the power of which to do damage is, indeed, incalculable, taking the toll of many innocent lives. Should We continue to fight, not only would it result in an ultimate collapse and obliteration of the Japanese nation, but also it would lead to the total extinction of human civilization.

Such being the case, how are We to save the millions of Our subjects, or to atone Ourselves before the hallowed spirits of Our Imperial Ancestors? This is the reason why We have ordered the acceptance of the provisions of the Joint Declaration of the Powers.

We cannot but express the deepest sense of regret to Our Allied nations of East Asia, who have consistently cooperated with the Empire towards the emancipation of East Asia.

The thought of those officers and men as well as others who have fallen in the fields of battle, those who died at their posts of duty, or those who met with untimely death and all their bereaved families, pains Our heart night and day.

The welfare of the wounded and the war-sufferers, and of those who have lost their homes and livelihood, are the objects of Our profound solicitude.

The hardships and sufferings to which Our nation is to be subjected hereafter will be certainly great. We are keenly aware of the inmost feelings of all of you, Our subjects.

However, it is according to the dictates of time and fate that We have resolved to pave the way for a grand peace for all the generations to come by enduring the unendurable and suffering what is unsufferable.

Having been able to safeguard and maintain the structure of the Imperial State, We are always with you, Our good and loyal subjects, relying upon your sincerity and integrity.

Beware most strictly of any outbursts of emotion which may engender needless complications, or any fraternal contention and strike which may create confusion, lead you astray and cause you to lose the confidence of the world.

Let the entire nation continue as one family from generation to generation, ever firm in its faith in the imperishability of its sacred land, and mindful of its heavy burden of responsibility, and of the long road before it.

Unite your total strength, to be devoted to construction for the future. Cultivate the ways of rectitude, foster nobility of spirit, and work with resolution â€" so that you may enhance the innate glory of the Imperial State and keep pace with the progress of the world.

The rescript was translated to English by Tadaichi Hirakawa and was broadcast to overseas Allies at the same time.

The main subject of the speech was to announce the surrender of Japan, that Hirohito "ordered Our Government to communicate to the Governments of the United States, Great Britain, China and the Soviet Union that Our Empire accepts the provisions of their Joint Declaration."

In the speech, Hirohito notes that the war is "Our sincere desire to ensure Japan's self-preservation and the stabilization of East Asia […]", but "the war situation has developed not necessarily to Japan's advantage".

He then cites "Moreover, the enemy has begun to employ a new and most cruel bomb, the power of which to do damage is, indeed, incalculable, taking the toll of many innocent lives"; the remark is interpreted to refer to the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki that occurred days before the speech.

He, however, never mentioned the Soviet invasion that had begun a few days before the speech. Finally, and most famously, he says: "However, it is according to the dictates of time and fate that We have resolved to pave the way for a grand peace for all the generations to come by enduring the unendurable and suffering what is unsufferable."

The speech was not broadcast directly, but was replayed from a phonograph recording made in the Tokyo Imperial Palace on either August 13 or 14, 1945. Many elements of the Japanese military were extremely opposed to the idea that Hirohito was going to end the war, as they believed that this was dishonourable. Consequently, as many as one thousand officers attempted to raid the Imperial palace on the evening of August 14, to destroy the recording. The recording was successfully smuggled out of the palace in a laundry basket of women's underwear and broadcast the following day, although another attempt was made to stop it from being played at the radio station.

To ease the anticipated confusion, at the conclusion of the speech a radio announcer clarified that the Emperor's message did mean that Japan was surrendering. According to French journalist Robert Guillain, who was living in Tokyo at the time, upon the announcement's conclusion, most Japanese retreated into their homes or places of business for several hours to quietly absorb and contemplate the significance of the announcement.

Gyokuon-hōsō
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gyokuon-hōsō, lit. "Jewel Voice Broadcast", was the radio broadcast in which Japanese emperor Hirohito read out the Imperial Rescript on the Termination of the War, announcing to the Japanese people that the Japanese Government had accepted the Potsdam Declaration demanding the unconditional surrender of the Japanese military at the end of World War II. This speech was broadcast at noon Japan standard time on August 15, 1945 after the Battle of Okinawa, the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the declaration of war against Japan by the Soviet Union.

Hirohito's speech marked what was probably the first time in history that an Emperor of Japan had spoken (albeit via a phonograph record) to the common people. The speech was delivered in the formal, Classical Japanese that few ordinary people could easily understand. Additionally, the speech made no direct reference to a surrender of Japan, instead stating that he had instructed his government to accept the terms of the Potsdam Declaration fully. This created confusion in the minds of many listeners who were not sure if Japan had surrendered or if Hirohito was exhorting them to resist the enemy invasion. The poor audio quality of the radio broadcast, as well as the formal courtly language in which the speech was composed, only compounded the confusion.

MANILA: A top Philippine newspaper yesterday was taken in by a spoof cover of Time magazine depicting President Benigno Aquino with his mouth agape, running the picture on its front page. “We stand corrected. It was an honest mistake,” said a short statement issued by the Inquirer’s editor-in-chief Letty Jimenez-Magsanoc. She did not say who gave the paper the picture, which had the Filipino leader saying in its caption: “I’m just the face of the whole country.”

The picture however remained on the paper’s website yesterday afternoon. Time named Aquino on its annual list of the “100 Most Influential People in the World.” But he was not among the seven on the list who graced the covers of the magazine’s US and global editions, according to the magazine’s website.

The Spin Busters, a satirical website that focuses on local press issues, was the first to call out the fake cover, though the error was also pointed out by readers in the comments section of the paper’s website. “It’s a faux Time cover not even his mother probably would have loved,” Spin Busters said, while calling for the sacking of newspaper staff behind the mistake. Aquino spokesman Ricky Carandang told AFP he did not wish to comment.

The trash slide in Rodriguez was not the first time that a garbage avalanche cost the lives of several people. In the Philippines, trash picking in dump sites is largely unregulated and local officials allow shanties to be set up even in high-risk trash slide areas.

The most devastating trash slide in the country occurred in July 2000 in the Payatas dump site in suburban Quezon City just several kilometres away from Manila. Some 200 people died when a mound of refuse, several dozen metres high, came crashing on informal settlers.
#26094
Edward Gonzales, head of the MMDA rescue team, was quoted in report by radio station dzBB as saying that rescue teams are carefully removing the debris by hand to prevent another landside from occurring.

The dump site is located close to a quarry site and investigators are trying to determine if ground movement near the mountain of trash was the cause of the avalanche.
#26095
Rescue workers of the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) rushed to the site but authorities ordered operations halted until daybreak for fear that hasty recovery efforts could compromise the safety of the rescuers and trigger another landslide.

According to the NDRRMC, the rescue and recovery operations resumed at 5am on Saturday, several hours after the mishap. As of 5pm the same day, there have been no reports of any victims rescued or recovered from the trash slide.

Manila: Rescue operations to find four people buried in an evening trash avalanche in a municipality east of the capital continued on Saturday even as hopes of finding survivors grow dimmer by the hour.

A mound of trash at a private sanitary landfill of by Swims International in San Isidro village, Rodriguez town in Rizal province, came crashing on Friday evening, burying four employees under tonnes of garbage. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) identified the victims as Gary Balahibo, Pablito Esto, Eddie Malano and Rovidico Olod. They were working at the dump site around 8.30pm on Friday when the mishap occurred.
