MANILA – Senator Teofisto “TG” Guingona III condemned the acts of the New People’s Army (NPA) on Saturday night that left her mother, Gingoog City Mayor Ruth de Lara Guingona, injured.

In an interview with ANC on Sunday afternoon, Guingona said: “No one but the President has the right to execute laws. It is not the NPA. We only have one government in this country.”

His mother sustained gunshot wounds in a firefight between police and members of the NPA past 11 p.m. on Saturday night.

She was on her way home from a barangay fiesta in Alagatan in Misamis Oriental, when around 50 men blocked her convoy upon reaching Sitio Dumayokod.

A firefight ensued between the members of the NPA and Guingona’s six police escorts, which lasted for about 10 minutes.

Her driver and bodyguard died from the incident.

A certain Ka Oris of the Communist Party of the Philippines-NPA-New Democratic Front in Central Mindanao claimed responsibility for the incident. He said, however, that they were just conducting a checkpoint and it was the police who first fired on them.

The senator said it’s ironic that the victims are the ones following the law. “No one has the right to usurp the law of the land,” he saidm adding authorities are now undergoing hot pursuit operations against the NPA members.

The senator said his mother is not in a life-threatening condition and that "she is stable, but in pain.”

“She has several shrapnel wounds in her legs and arms. She also has fractures bones in hips and arms,” Sen. Guingona said.

He said his mother will have to undergo an operation, which could be done in Cagayan de Oro where she was brought on Sunday morning.
