Bohol to try solar energy

While Bohol is in dire need of island-based power producer, it attempts to go renewable energy (RE) when ceremonial project launching of the 27-megawatt solar farm will take place in barangay San Vicente, Dagohoy in the morning on September 27, 2022.

The project is known as the Dagohoy Solar Power Project (DSPP) introduced by Petrogreen Energy Corporation (PDEC), the renewable energy holding unit of publicly listed and Yuchengco Group of Companies (YGC) affiliate PetroEnergy Resources Corporation (PERC), according to its website.

Governor Aris Aumentado, other provincial and national officials, Dagohoy Mayor Hermie Relampagos are expected to grace the project launching, Capitol source said.

"Bohol is gearing up for renewable energy in order to become an environmentally-friendly province, and projects like the Dagohoy solar power facility gives us a chance to achieve Green Bohol," Aumentado said during the meeting with the company's bigwigs held in Capitol recently.

PetroGreen, earlier, proposed 25MW solar electric supply but increased it to 27MW, which the Sangguniang Panlalawigan chaired by Vice-Gov. Victor Balite approved.

There have been attempts to put up big solar farms in some northern towns in the province but did not pursue them for some red tape and tricky land conversion, reliable report said.

The more, the merrier
The province recently has been swamped with offerings for power generation proposals.

The governor bared that San Miguel Corporation thru its vice-president Mathias Reyes, who paid him a courtesy visit at the Capitol, presented its plan to set up solar power.

"Kini usa ka tulo ka megawatts nga solar power nga moserbisyo sa mga kooperatiba, eskwelahan ug LGUs—ang ika-110 nga investor nga gustong mosulod. Ang mas daghang mamumuhunan, mas maayo," he said.

The governor said that just recently a delegation of Turkish company, Karpowership, offered to supply electricity by way of powerships.

Powership is a floating power plant with multi-fuel flexibility, using the Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) or Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). The said gas is cheaper in global market and potential to reduce power rates, the governor said.

"Ug maka-operate dayon sulod sa 30 ngadto sa 90 ka adlaw tungod kay anaa na sila mga powership na andam mo biyahe kung kinahanglanon sa Bohol," he said.

The governor was informed that the company has already operating in 20 countries, like South Africa, Cuba and Brazil. Former Turkish Ambassador Dr. Sander Gurbuz is the ehad of the delegation along with David Clark (Karadeniz Holding), Michelle Victoriano (Northstar Shipping and Marine Services), Gerard Rabonza (Manila Integrated Cargo Terminal Inc.), Atty. Sheryll Dungca (Geo-Pacific Offshore Services Inc), and Irma Villanueva.

Another offering is from Alcantara group who met with the governor and other officials. The company made power presentation of their project.

Alcantara offered to build a 92.5MW diesel plant in barangay Imelda, Ubay town.

The governor was told that Alcantara would only operate its diesel plant when needed under an agreement.

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), earlier, announced that its multi-billion project for power connection via undersea from Cebu to Maribojoc town will be finished by the end of the 2023. The project is expected to supply some 200 MW to Bohol.

Bohol is very much dependent on Bohol-Leyte interconnection for 100MW geothermal power supply from Leyte. The project was the brainchild of Aumentado's father, the late Gov. Erico Boyles Aumentado.

When blackout or brownout occurs, the Bohol Diesel Power Plant that produces some 16MW and 25MW Power barge 104 moored in Ubay port operate which make the cost of electricity rise.

The three hydro plants in the province ---- Hanopol, Balilihan; Sevilla town; and Loboc town ---- cannot operate yet for the estimated next three years after super typhoon 'Odette' destroyed them, BOHECO said.

4th Scout Ranger Battalion to bolster anti-insurgency campaign in Samar

Around 400 soldiers who are part of the 4th Scout Ranger Battalion arrived at the Calbayog City Port in Samar on December 11, 2022 to bolster the 8th Infantry Division's (8ID) anti-insurgency campaign in Eastern Visayas.

8ID Commander Maj. Gen. Camilo Z. Ligayo led the welcome ceremony for the battalion led by Lt. Col. Ricarte Dayata. "Remain alert and vigilant as you join our fight against the communist terrorists here in Eastern Visayas. I trust that everyone remains mission-oriented and always respects human rights, adhere to the international humanitarian law and the rule of law as you proceed to your area of operations," he remarked.

The 4th Scout Ranger Battalion—which earlier helped in the anti-insurgency campaign in the Caraga region in northeastern Mindanao—will be deployed to Northern Samar where four CTG fronts are still active. Prior to their Eastern Visayas deployment, the Scout Rangers underwent battalion retraining in Australia to bolster their air-to-ground combat and small-unit operation capabilities.

Baclayon ancient uplifted marine
terraces in Bohol geoparks bid list

CORTES, Bohol, Dec 6 2022 (PIA) –One need not go far to see a 'marvel' caused by the earth's movements through the eons, a few steps off the eastern highway a few blocks before the ancient church in Baclayon is a proof that Bohol indeed rose from under the sea.

Here, a diligent observer would see giant-steps-like gradation of the landscape, one that forms  terraces, clearly recognizable on aerial view.

This is what studying geologists call as Baclayon Uplifted marine Terraces, or Baclayon Ancient Uplifted Marine Terraces.

Caused by drastic environmental changes like melting glaciers during the Pleistocene period and the fluctuating levels of seawater plus local tectonic and environmental conditions, these forces have contributed to an uplift that left three land terraces that is visibly exposed in Baclayon, Dauis and some areas.

Part of the natural geological formations that could help boost Bohol's aspirations to be enrolled into the United Nations Educational, Scientific, Cultural Organization (UNESCO) global geoparks, the Baclayon Uplifted Marine Terraces were formed much older than the uplifted coastlines of the areas in Maribojoc and Loon.

Formed during the Pliocene-Pleistocene time, which is about 5 million years to 11,000 years ago, the Baclayon Uplifted Marine Terraces is what geologists termed as half-Horst structure where an upthrown block lying between two steep-angled fault blocks are pushed up by vertical tectonic movements, producing three levels of uplift spanning roughly two million years.

The subsequent vertical tectonic movements have resulted in landforms manifested in terraces that rise from 20 to 40 to 60 feet above the mean sea level, as is visible in Poblacion, Baclayon stretching towards Montana.

The same uplift can also be documented in Dauis, in the cliff behind the catholic cemetery and rising up to barangay Mayacabac to parts of Catarman.

In the vicinity of Baclayon, there are morphologically three terraces with elevations of 20 meters, 40 meters and 60 meters above sea levels, published a study, suggesting the intensive tectonic uplift of the island as seen in this site.

In dating the uplift, geologists used Uranium-Thorium isotope analysis and this indicated that the first terrace at 20 meters above sea level emerged between 129,000 years ago, and the third terrace which is at 60 meters high emerged  about 310,000 years ago.   

A rather graphic representation of the global footprint during the ice age, the terraced marine structure true enough, have indications of being long underwater with the presence of large and petrified fragments of giant bivalve sea shells and gastropods as collected by geologists Gero Hillmer and Joachim Scholz (Hillmer and Scholz) as published in 1986.

In Bohol, the bid for declaration as among the 177 UNESCO Global Geoparks in 46 countries could be the Philippines first entry.
UNESCO has opened up the geoparks for unified geographical areas where sites and landscapes of international geological significance are studied and managed with a holistic concept of protection, education and sustainable development.

A UNESCO Global Geopark uses its geological heritage, in connection with all other aspects of the area's natural and cultural heritage, to enhance awareness and understanding of key issues facing society, such as using our earth's resources sustainably, mitigating the effects of climate change and reducing natural disasters-related risks."

Along with Baclayon Uplifted Marine Terraces are the Chocolate Hills, Alicia Schist, The Alicia Panoramic Park, Loon Uplifted Marine Terraces and Coral Garden, Maribojoc Uplifted Marine Terrace, Hinagdanan Cave, Cagongcagong Cave System including Princess Manan-aw Cave, Batongay Cave System in Trinidad, Lamanoc Island in Anda, Canawa Cold Spring in Candijay, Can-umangtad Falls, Danajon Double Barrier Reef, Anda Cave Pools, Inabanga Fault Scarp, Cadapdapan Rice Terraces, Baclayon Church, Dauis Church and Eskaya Indigenous Cultural Community. Vallacar Transit Inc. would like to clarify to our beloved riding public that the picture that is circulating the social media recently, where several passengers were seated on the roof of a yellow bus at the Libertad Public Market, was not a Ceres bus. It is not the practice of VTI Management to put the lives of the general riding public at risk.

We are compliant with the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board's (LTFRB) policies. For several years, VTI had partnered with the modernization program of the agency. These programs were implemented to further improve the service that we are providing, as far as the reliability of said service, safety, and comfort of the riding public.

This incident is in clear violation of the franchise that has been granted by the agency, and we do not condone this type of blatant use of the bus's signature colors. Hailed as China's most beautiful countryside, Huangling celebrated the
country's Dragon Boat Festival with a series of unique Huizhou traditional
performances to honor the region's culture, history and folk customs.

To present a comprehensive, unique Dragon Boat Festival experience to visitors,
the people of Huangling organized events such as drawing the character wang (or
"king") on children's foreheads with realgar wine to exorcise evil spirits,
sewing silk scent bags filled with garlic and mugwort to repel diseases, and
performing the ancient Hui-style tiao zhong kui dance for good blessings.

The Dragon Boat Festival, or Duanwu Festival, came about as a way to
commemorate the life and death of poet Qu Yuan (340-278 BC), a loyal minister
in the ancient state of Chu who committed ritual suicide in protest of the
corruption of the era. The festival falls on the fifth day of the fifth month
on the lunar calendar.

The Dragon Boat Festival is also called the 'Health Festival' in Huizhou region
because locals would incorporate rituals to drive away the plagues and diseases
that normally arrive with the humid summer weather. Every local household
places mugwort on their door and hang strings of garlic under their roof while
sprinkling realgar wine in damp corners to kill germs; it's an ancient
tradition that is meant to bring about health and prosperity.

The locals would also burn strong-scented pine cones and sweet gum fruits
picked from the mountains to repel mosquitoes and bugs.

In most places across China, zongzi, or sticky rice wrapped in bamboo leaves,
is the staple dish for the holiday. But in Huangling, locals get together with
family members to prepare qigao, an airy and fluffy steamed rice cake served
with savory toppings like shrimp, pork and bean curd sheets.

"The town's rich history and cultural heritage are treasures passed on from one
generation to another; to visitors from urban areas they are reminiscent of a
bygone era," said Cao Jinzhong, executive vice president of Wuyuan Rural
Culture Development Co., Ltd.

platform for tillage that can extend agricultural ICT fostered in Japan
globally.

2. Nationwide deployment of ICT for livestock through collaboration with
ZEN-NOH and NTT DOCOMO
ZEN-NOH and Farmnote have concluded a capital/business tie-up for joint
development and dissemination of system platforms and sensor devices to improve
the incomes of farm producers through the use of ICT. A business partnership
was also concluded recently with NTT DOCOMO, which will assist the efforts of
ZEN-NOH and Farmnote by promoting sales.

3. Further R&D on AI and IoT applications in agriculture
Farmnote will be further promoting Farmnote Lab, its existing organization for
researching AI and IoT applications in agriculture, extending "Farmnote

China 2016 Asian International Stamp Exhibition was held from December 2 to
December 6 in Nanning. The Exhibition was sponsored by Inter-Asia Philatelic
Federation (FIAP) and recognized by International Philatelic Federation (FIP).
Established by the FIAP, the exhibition is a regional stamp exhibition which is
aimed to boost the development of world philately. It is the forth time that
the exhibition is held in China since its establishment in 1977.

   The Stamp Exhibition was a comprehensive Asian International stamp
exhibition. There were 13 competitive classes, including FIAP Championship
class, Traditional Philately, Postal History, Postal Stationery, Aerophilately,
Astrophilately, Thematic, Maximaphily, Revenue, Youth, Philatelic literature,
One-frame and Modern Philately. The exhibits were from 22 members of FIAP,
namely Australia, Bahrain, Bengal, China, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Macao,
India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, New Zealand,
Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, Thailand, and United
Arab Emirates. A total of 1300 frames and 51 literature documents were
exhibited.

   In addition, about 50 albums of stamps from 26 countries and regions
appeared on the official stamp exhibition organized by Universal Postal Union
(UPU). The exhibits were classical stamp albums from various countries around
the world. The personal collections of the presidents of the FIP and FIAP were
also exhibited in the event.

   There were five theme days in this years' exhibition, namely Opening Day,
Nanning Day, Youth Day, Chinese Zodiac Day and the Closing Day. On each theme
day, some renowned stamp designers arrived at the venue and met with philately
fans. December 3 was Nanning Day. On that day, the organizers held a "Nanning
City Creativity Exhibition". Through three modules of "Nanning Memories",
"Nanning Culture Creativity" and "Nanning Impression", the organizers tried to
demonstrate fast-changing city landscape and cultural vitality of Nanning.
Moreover, scarce stamp exhibition, Chinese Zodiac Stamp culture exhibition and
national thematic post office culture exhibition were also part of the event.

   In addition, an international philately seminar organized by the UPU and the
State Postal Bureau of the People's Republic of China was held during the
event. The organizers also held activities like the fourth lottery-drawing
session of the 2016 China postal cards and the awarding ceremony of the youth
postal card designing competition.

   Nanning is a city with profound philatelic culture. It is among the first
few cities that started early research on philately. The philately association
of Nanning was established in 1983. Until 2015, there are 200 substratum
philatelic organizations and 15,000 members in the association. Philately has
become a hobby of many Nanning citizens. The Stamp Exhibition held in Nanning
is a good opportunity to enhance the understanding from different countries and
nations. It also serves to propagate philatelic culture and enhance economic as
well as cultural communication among Asian countries.

"Delegates from Belt and Road countries signed a declaration in northwest
China's Dunhuang City to further cultural exchange as the Silk Road
International Cultural Expo concluded on Wednesday.

In the Dunhuang Declaration, cultural diversity, equality and inclusiveness are
stressed. The signatories agreed to protect historical and cultural heritage,
strengthen cultural dialogue at all levels, and promote cultural trade and
industry cooperation.

According to the organizing committee, 89 agreements relating to cultural
industries with a total value of 108 billion yuan (16 billion U.S. dollars)
were signed during the two-day expo.

Chinese Culture Minister Luo Shugang said the Dunhuang Declaration marked the
establishment of a new cultural exchange mechanism within the framework of the
Belt and Road Initiative.

In addition, Gansu Province, which administers Dunhuang, signed cooperation
agreements with a European Parliament cultural commission on the Belt and Road,
and the government of Tajikistan.

"Delegations from 85 countries, five international organizations and 66 overseas
institutions will attend the Silk Road International Cultural Expo in northwest
China's Dunhuang City, Gansu Province from Tuesday.

According to deputy director of the expo Liang Yanshun, a summit conference,
five sub-forums and five special forums will be held during the two days of the
event to come up with constructive suggestions on cultural exchange and
intergovernmental cooperation.

An exhibition of some 8,000 exhibits will be devoted to the cultural
achievements of more than 60 countries along the Belt and Road. The expo is the
only international cultural festival specifically for Belt and Road countries.

Gansu Province plans to sign 10 agreements with participating countries and
international organizations, along with about 90 cultural cooperation
agreements worth over 100 billion yuan (15 billion U.S. dollars).

China has elevated its relations with Saudi Arabia to a comprehensive strategic partnership during President Xi Jinping's visit to the Middle Eastern country this week, according to the Chinese foreign ministry.

Late singer Jovit Baldivino's TikTok video of him singing at an event has gone viral. The singer was seen delivering a powerful performance, but at the end of the video, he appears to be out of breath.

"Doctor's advice not to sing while recuperating. Knowing "Bundoy" (Jovit), he gave in to clamor of the crowd. He sang 3 signature songs including Faithfully by Journey. He was gasping for breath on the 3rd song," his Family said in a statement.

The singer was found to have a blood clot in his brain and was comatose for five days before passing away on Friday, December 9.

SNAPSHOTS | Blue Eagles Return to their Nest for the AdZU Grand Alumni Homecoming 2022

For more than two years, the yearly return of the Eagles to their roost has been barred by the pandemic. Yet, despite the hardships, the losses, and the seemingly insurmountable challenges, the blue flame of animo remained alive and well within every Atenean.

And so this year's Grand Alumni Homecoming is unlike any other! There is a different air about it – a more hopeful energy hovers above the crowds and a more palpable sensation of joy.

Our honored Jubilarians and alumni greeted the day with a special Eucharistic celebration at the University Sacred Heart Chapel – a perfect prelude to this grand three-day event. University President Fr Karel S San Juan SJ, led the Mass and was co-presided by former University President Fr William H Kreutz, University Chaplain Fr Francisco D Parilla, and Fr Elmer Sumile.

The mass was followed by an awarding ceremony wherein plaques, medallions, and certificates were presented to the Jubilarians from various alumni batches.

Then, it was off to the streets! The Grand Alumni Homecoming Parade took off in earnest. Clad in their batch shirts, their own lively gimmicks, and their best smiles, our celebrants displayed to all how infectious the energy of the Ateneo is!

And finally, everyone assembled at the AdZU Back Field to begin the day's highlight. A message from the University President, Fr Karel S San Juan, SJ greeted our alumni and roused their spirits for the night's festivities. Despite the unexpected rain, it was a bonanza of youthful performances, 80's and 90's nostalgia, and jolly feasting together with friends, teachers, and classmates – truly a loud and extravagant grand celebration unique to the Ateneo.

This is a night where our alumni and our Jubilarians are on the spotlight. We honor them and express our undying gratitude for keeping their faith and loyalty to our alma mater throughout the years.

The AdZU Community is delighted to have you back Blue Eagles! We hope to see you again on the next grand homecoming event.

In celebration of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between France and the Philippines, the Cultural Center of the Philippines holds "Songs From the Heart", a night of Choral Music featuring the Loboc Children's Choir and the Little Singers of Paris (Les Petits Chanteurs á la Croix de Bois).

Held on Friday, December 2, 2022,  This event was a collaboration with the National Commission for Culture and Arts, the French Embassy of Manila, the Provincial Government of Bohol, the Municipality of Loboc, and the Archdiocese of Tagbilaran, to celebrate the conciliatory relationship of the Philippines and France. Angelic voices filled the interior of San Pedro Apostol Parish Church in Loboc as the two renowned choral groups gave out song performances in Bisaya, Tagalog, English, and in French. The Loboc Children's Choir performed first, with six performances, followed by the Little Singers of Paris, with nine. Both groups performed together at the last part of the program to symbolize the unity and friendship between the two countries that signed the Treaty of Amity in Paris in 1947.

Chief of staff Mariquit Oppus represented Governor Erico Aristotle Aumentado at the event, and gave a welcome message, emphasizing the importance of music as a unifying language among different cultures.

"We are different, but we speak the same language and that is music. This event is not just a celebration of music, but a festival of shared connections between the Philippines and France," Oppus said.

Along with Opus was Loboc Vice Mayor Engr. Helen Alaba thanked the CCP for choosing Loboc as the venue for the event.

Other attendees were CCP President and Miss Universe 1973 Margarita Moran-Floirendo, and outgoing NCCA Chairperson Rene Escalante who thanked PGBh for their cooperation in organizing the event.

The "Songs From the Heart" event is the first of four performances by the Little Singers of Paris, who are also performing in Manila and Ilocos Norte this month.

In 1546, St. Francis Xavier, after strenuous and successful missionary activities in India, set out to the lands and islands to the east of India such as Singapore, Philippines, Malacca and Indonesia.

In February 1546, the boat in which the saint sailed was caught in a storm in Eastern Indonesia.

In an attempt to calm the tempest, he leaned out of the boat and dipped his crucifix in the raging waves prayerfully and the sea became calm miraculously. But the cross slipped from his grip and fell down into the deep sea.

He reached the shores of Seram island the next morning. On the shore, he saw a crab crawling towards him from the sea, carrying, clutched between its claws, the crucifix he lost in the sea.

The saint knelt down, praised the Lord and recovered the cross from the crab. He thanked the Lord, kissed the cross and blessed the crab.

Popular belief is that the crab developed the mark of the cross on its shell miraculously as the saint blessed it with the sign of the cross.

Crabs bearing the cross mark which are found even today in the sea, are believed to be the descendants of the crab that was blessed by the saint for retrieving his cross from the sea.

This incident was depicted on the altar at the ceremony for canonization of the saint in 1622.

These special species of crabs bearing the sign of the cross are described as living miracles of the saint and have been powerful instruments to strengthen the faith of many.

St. Francis Xavier was one of the founding fathers of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits).

He was transformed by the words of Jesus, repeated by St. Ignatius Loyola, "Will a person gain anything if he wins the whole world but loses his life?" {Matthew 16: 26, Mark 8: 36}.

St. Francis Xavier is the patron saint of missions, missionaries and sailors. He was called to eternal rest on 2nd December, 1552.

The blessed body of this great saint still remains miraculously without decomposition in the Basilica of Bom Jesus at Goa, India.

His liturgical feast day is celebrated on the 3rd of December every year.

INCIDENT REPORT: The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) responded to a maritime incident involving a distressed motorbanca in the vicinity waters off Zamboanga del Norte at around 03:00 a.m. on 02 December 2022.

Based on the investigation, the motorbanca with nine crew, including the boat captain, encountered bad weather and rough sea condition while en route to Dipolog City from Hasiman Tanjung, Jolo, Sulu.

They accidentally hit a hard object that damaged the wooden hull, causing the seawater to enter the motorbanca.

Eventually, the half-submerged motorbanca drifted towards the vicinity waters off Liloy, Zamboanga Del Norte.

At around 03:40 a.m., the PCG was able to communicate with the crew and identified their location which was between the vicinity waters off Liloy and Dipolog City, Zamboanga Del Norte.

Consequently, the PCG coordinated with MV Empress Amy to conduct SAR operation.

At around 11:40 a.m., MV Empress Amy sighted the distressed motorbanca, rescued all crew, and brought them to the nearest shoreline.

MV Empress Amy also towed the distressed motorbanca to Lamao Port.

The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) personnel examined all crew and confirmed they were all in good physical condition:

1. Henry Burong, 35 - Brgy Manicahan, Zamboanga City

2. Deigo Burong, 35 - Brgy Arena Blanco, Zamboanga City

3. Surafi Anapi, 43 - Brgy Tigtabon, Zamboanga City

4. Benjar Luntian, 42 - Brgy Sinunuc, Zamboanga City

5. Isa Musa, 42 - Brgy Recodo, Zamboanga City

6. Aldamer Alih, 30 - Brgy Ayala, Zamboanga City

7. Boy Saguile, 27 - Brgy Sta Catalina, Zamboanga City

8. Bader Barahim, 43 - Brgy Patalon, Zamboanga City

9. Magno Dalawis, 52 - Brgy Taluksangay, Zamboanga City

At around 04:32 p.m., the rescued crew were allowed to return to their respective residences.
