Berenice Abbott’s Minimalist Black-and-White Science Imagery, 1958-1960
By: Maria Popova
http://www.brainpickings.org/

Photographer Berenice Abbott (1898-1991) might be best-remembered for her striking black-and-white prints of New York’s changing face in the 1930s, but she was also intensely interested in science and in making the abstract elegance and beauty of science visible and concrete. In 1939, she began experimenting with scientific imagery and capturing the whimsy of physics, mathematics and chemistry in her minimalist yet dramatic black-and-white photos. Documenting Science collects the best of that work, which culminated with the Physical Science Study Project at MIT in 1958.

Kepler's research was slow to gain widespread traction during his lifetime, but it later served as a key influence on the English mathematician Sir Isaac Newton (1643-1727) and his law of gravitational force. Additionally, Kepler did important work in the fields of optics, including demonstrating how the human eye works, and math. He died on November 15, 1630, in Regensberg, Germany. As for Kepler's calculation about the universe's birthday, scientists in the 20th century developed the Big Bang theory, which showed that his calculations were off by about 13.7 billion years. -- http://www.history.com/
#25836
In 1600, Kepler went to Prague to work for Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe, the imperial mathematician to Rudolf II, emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. Kepler's main project was to investigate the orbit of Mars. When Brahe died the following year, Kepler took over his job and inherited Brahe's extensive collection of astronomy data, which had been painstakingly observed by the naked eye. Over the next decade, Kepler learned about the work of Italian physicist and astronomer Galileo Galilei (1564-1642), who had invented a telescope with which he discovered lunar mountains and craters, the largest four satellites of Jupiter and the phases of Venus, among other things. Kepler corresponded with Galileo and eventually obtained a telescope of his own and improved upon the design. In 1609, Kepler published the first two of his three laws of planetary motion, which held that planets move around the sun in ellipses, not circles (as had been widely believed up to that time), and that planets speed up as they approach the sun and slow down as they move away. In 1619, he produced his third law, which used mathematic principles to relate the time a planet takes to orbit the sun to the average distance of the planet from the sun.

On this day in 4977 B.C., the universe is created, according to German mathematician and astronomer Johannes Kepler, considered a founder of modern science. Kepler is best known for his theories explaining the motion of planets.

Kepler was born on December 27, 1571, in Weil der Stadt, Germany. As a university student, he studied the Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus' theories of planetary ordering. Copernicus (1473-1543) believed that the sun, not the earth, was the center of the solar system, a theory that contradicted the prevailing view of the era that the sun revolved around the earth.

After Magellan's death, the survivors, in two ships, sailed on to the Moluccas and loaded the hulls with spice. One ship attempted, unsuccessfully, to return across the Pacific. The other ship, the Victoria, continued west under the command of the Basque navigator Juan Sebastian de Elcano. The vessel sailed across the Indian Ocean, rounded the Cape of Good Hope, and arrived at Seville on September 9, 1522, becoming the first ship to circumnavigate the globe. -- http://www.history.com/
#25839
On October 21, he finally discovered the strait he had been seeking. The Strait of Magellan, as it became known, is located near the tip of South America, separating Tierra del Fuego and the continental mainland. Only three ships entered the passage; one had been wrecked and another deserted. It took 38 days to navigate the treacherous strait, and when ocean was sighted at the other end Magellan wept with joy. He was the first European explorer to reach the Pacific Ocean from the Atlantic. His fleet accomplished the westward crossing of the ocean in 99 days, crossing waters so strangely calm that the ocean was named "Pacific," from the Latin word pacificus, meaning "tranquil." By the end, the men were out of food and chewed the leather parts of their gear to keep themselves alive. On March 6, 1521, the expedition landed at the island of Guam. Ten days later, they reached the Philippines--they were only about 400 miles from the Spice Islands.
#25840
Magellan sailed to West Africa and then to Brazil, where he searched the South American coast for a strait that would take him to the Pacific. He searched the Rio de la Plata, a large estuary south of Brazil, for a way through; failing, he continued south along the coast of Patagonia. At the end of March 1520, the expedition set up winter quarter at Port St. Julian. On Easter day at midnight, the Spanish captains mutinied against their Portuguese captain, but Magellan crushed the revolt, executing one of the captains and leaving another ashore when his ship left St. Julian in August.
#25841
To King Charles, Magellan proposed sailing west, finding a strait through the Americas, and then continuing west to the Moluccas, which would prove that the Spice Islands lay west of the demarcation line and thus in the Spanish sphere. Magellan knew that the world was round but underestimated its size, thinking that the Moluccas must be situated just west of the American continent, not on the other side of a great uncharted ocean. The king accepted the plan, and on September 20, 1519, Magellan set sail from Spain in command of five ships and 270 men.
#25842
In 1494, Portugal and Spain, at the prompting of Pope Alexander VI, settled disputes over newly discovered lands in America and elsewhere by dividing the world into two spheres of influence. A line of demarcation was agreed to in the Atlantic Ocean--all new discoveries west of the line were to be Spanish, and all to the east Portuguese. Thus, South and Central America became dominated by the Spanish, with the exception of Brazil, which was discovered by the Portuguese explorer Pedro Alvares Cabral in 1500 and was somewhat east of the demarcation line. Other Portuguese discoveries in the early 16th century, such as the Moluccas Islands--the Spice Islands of Indonesia--made the Spanish jealous.
#25843
Magellan, a Portuguese noble, fought for his country against the Muslim domination of the Indian Ocean and Morocco. He participated in a number of key battles and in 1514 asked Portugal's King Manuel for an increase in his pension. The king refused, having heard unfounded rumors of improper conduct on Magellan's part after a siege in Morocco. In 1516, Magellan again made the request and the king again refused, so Magellan went to Spain in 1517 to offer his services to King Charles I, later Holy Roman Emperor Charles V.
#25844
After traveling three-quarters of the way around the globe, Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan is killed during a tribal skirmish on Mactan Island in the Philippines. Earlier in the month, his ships had dropped anchor at the Philippine island of Cebu, and Magellan met with the local chief, who after converting to Christianity persuaded the Europeans to assist him in conquering a rival tribe on the neighboring island of Mactan. In the subsequent fighting, Magellan was hit by a poisoned arrow and left to die by his retreating comrades.

No one disputes that Zigler, who was in his 60s, died of natural causes, but Simpson said his department is looking into charging Chase with financial fraud.

"The investigation is ongoing," Simpson said. "We're talking with a local prosecutor and hopefully we can get some charges soon."

Simpson said police were called after Zigler's family members hadn't heard from him "for a long period of time." -- http://www.huffingtonpost.com/

Chase insisted to Michigan Live that, while she did cash Zigler's Social Security checks after he died, she kept him around, not for his money, but for the pleasure of his company.

Chase and police also disagree on the nature of the pair's relationship. The cops say the two were boyfriend and girlfriend, but Chase insists they weren't

"It's not that I'm heartless. It's just that after so many bad things happen to you, I don't know," Chase told Michigan Live while wiping away tears. "I didn't want to be alone. He was the only guy who was ever nice to me."

Chase says Zigler died a few months ago, but Jackson Police spokesperson Chris Simpson told The Huffington Post that Zigler likely passed away around Christmas time in 2010.

Linda Chase Allegedly Kept Mummified Boyfriend, Charles Zigler In Michigan House For Years
By Simon McCormack
Posted: 07/11/2012 9:05 am Updated: 07/11/2012 9:11 am

Charles William Zigler's mummified remains were found in the living room of the Michigan home that he shared with a longtime companion.

Did this woman really love her mummy or was she just interested in cashing his Social Security checks?

That question is one of many surrounding an investigation launched by Jackson, Mich. police after they discovered Charles Williams Zigler's mummified remains inside the house of his alleged girlfriend, Linda Chase, 72, on July 6.

Whether solo or in group, spelunking in Sagada can be arranged with Sagada Genuine Guide Association (SAGGA) or Sagada Environmental Guides Association (SEGA). Rates are pretty standard, with the general rule that the more people there are in a group, the cheaper it will be. If you’re flying solo, Juarez recommends joining a group to save on cost.

Finally, to raise the comfort level of your spelunking adventure, be sure to wear appropriate clothing: preferably tight-fitting top and walking shorts with inner leggings to protect you from scrape and cuts specially if you are doing the cave connection. Juarez adds, “As much as possible, keep your hands free from unnecessary stuff. And do not rely on your guide's lamp alone, bring your own headlight or backup flashlight.” All that and you’re ready to have fun! No previous spelunking experience required.

Now whichever cave you prefer to explore, it’s a must that you hire a guide. Angel Juarez, founder of award-wining blog, www.lakwatsero.com, and who’s gone to Sagada several times, shares that the guide to guest ratio for Lumiang-Sumaguing cave connection is one guide for a maximum of three guests. For Sumaguing, it’s one guide to a maximum of four visitors.

If spelunking in the Big Cave leaves you wanting to explore more caves, the Lumiang-Lapitan-Sumaguing cave connection or the more daring reverse should be on your spelunking itinerary. Prepare to be challenged as this difficult route will likely take three to four hours, depending on how you’re able to weave through the tight tunnels and caverns. And how long you stop for pictures. (Just remember to waterproof your gadgets.)

Spelunking or caving in Sagada can be done in the prominent Sumaguing-Lapitan-Lumiang-Loko-ong (Crystal) cave system near the town proper.

For spelunking newbies, opt to go to Sumaguing cave or Big Cave. It takes about two hours to explore and most of the notable formations are found here.

There are ropes to hold on to in some parts of the cave while spelunking
You start with a 30-minute hike from the town hall into the cave entrance. From there, you trek down a slippery trail and immerse waist-deep into underground streams and cold natural pools. By then, you can ooh and aah over the stalactites and stalagmites that have been nicknamed according to what they look likeâ€"Mickey Mouse, King and Queen’s curtains, and Dancing Hall, among others.

Spelunking, we will go!

While spending your days hiking to the nearby rice terraces, having coffee and lemon pie for hours, trawling the Saturday morning street market, or just enjoying the slow pace of small town life, is a respectable way to spend your vacation in Sagada, spelunking is what put this mountain town on the tourism map.

Adventurous types who have no problems finding themselves in small, confined spaces and who are eager to bring home tales of their bold cave exploits (or at least how they almost slipped in one of the trails) should definitely sign up for spelunking.

Twelve to 15 hours by bus from Manila, Sagada is one of the municipalities of the Mountain Province that possess many hidden wonders. Particularly in its caves. Aside from giving visitors a taste of rural life, with little access to modern conveniences, amidst rice terraces, valleys, mountains, waterfalls, and the occasional hanging coffins, many will attest, that essential to the Sagada experience is going spelunking.

"Up to this very day, no positive result yet. They remain to be fugitive and it causes so much frustration on our part," reports quoted De Lima saying.

Asia | Middle East / Bangladesh Toll Approaches 260
April 26, 2013, 07:09:40 AM
April 25, 2013

The death toll from the collapse of a building in Bangladesh that housed garment factories has climbed close to 260 as the search for survivors goes on.

Rescue crews are working non-stop. They say they can hear the cries of those still trapped in the rubble. More than 3,000 people were in the building outside Dhaka when it collapsed Wednesday. More than 1,000 were injured. Authorities do not know how many people are missing.

Police say the owner of the building and factory managers ignored official warnings for people to evacuate the building after inspectors found cracks in it Tuesday. The owner is on the run and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina promises he will be caught and punished.

More than a thousand textile workers fought with police Thursday as they protested the accident and Bangladesh's poor factory safety standards. Some of the protesters also blame European and American companies and their demand for low-cost goods from the garment manufacturers. A fire at another garment factory in November in Bangladesh killed more than 100 workers.

While that newfound empathy may be positive, there still remains some amount of controversy with the efficacy of food budget challenges, especially those in the U.S. At least according to TIME, despite the awareness these events can raise, they do little to actually change public perceptions about poverty and how large a role the government should play in alleviating it.

The Pew Research Center reports that 71 percent of Americans think that the poor already rely too heavily on assistance, and more than half believe the country should forgo increased assistance if it would increase the deficit. But at the same time, one in five Americans had trouble putting food on their own tables in 2011. In this country, even when the struggle is our own, there's still an over-riding belief that hunger and strife are caused mostly by laziness.

America's conflict with poverty aside, global impoverishment and hunger remains a catastrophic issue. Whether at home or abroad, raising money and inciting compassion are always helpfulâ€"they may not be solutions in and of themselves, but they're a step in what can only be a better direction.

The Live Below the Line Challenge began as a small project in Australia several years ago, but has since grown into an international effort to help alleviate global poverty.

The $1.50 maximum may seem overly-strict, but it's designed to give entrants an experiential glimpse into what it's like to be limited by a lack of means and opportunity.

That being said, there really is no comparison between living an impoverished life and experiencing a tightly-controlled food budget for five days. But challenges like these work to at least introduce participants to the basic limitations that poverty imposesâ€"the first and foremost being an utter lack of choice.

Similar challenges have taken hold in the U.S., like the SNAP Challenge, where participants agree to live on $4 a dayâ€"the average allowance of a food stamp recipient. In the past, a  handful of city mayors including Newark’s Cory Booker have taken on the challenge, along with several of the country’s governors.

Their experiences generally echo one of frustration that the food stamp allowance is too meager to consistently keep them from going hungry.

Fame and frugality are concepts not often associated with one another. Celebrities aren’t only known for their wild spending habits, they’re often applauded for them. But now, one Oscar-winning star is taking the challenge to live on less in order to raise money for and awareness of global poverty.

Ben Affleck has signed on to take the Live Below the Line Challenge, a five-day event where participants agree to spend a maximum of $1.50 a day on food and hydration. They also solicit donations which are then funneled to one of a handful of poverty-focused charities.

This year's challenge will run from April 29-May 3.

Affleck's five days will be dedicated to raising money for his own Eastern Congo Initiative, a U.S.-based nonprofit that provides economic and social development opportunities for the people of that African region.
