mao gayud. ang tawo mo praise sa usang tawo for a day (when his stomach is full), but when he starves, the same man who praised you will stone you, condemn you.

Couple of days before they welcomed him on Palm Sunday. So quick to condemn.

agreed. its his money. and he comes from a wealthy family (haciendero family; presidential as well). what he does with his own money should be none of our concern. do other people pay for his food? do they pay his rent? do they pay for his medical expenses? did they send him to school and educate him? then why should he care what others think of what car he drives.

pettiness is such an ugliness. jealousy, especially, is more disgusting than the taste of coffee without sugar and cream.

i work with a friend who drives a Porsche 911 Carrera Turbo. It's worth is $95k+.
I asked him what motivated him to buy a Porsche. Apparently when he was
younger, he had a friend whose father drove an 1980's carrera. vintage beauty.
when he was finished with medical school and was working,
was able to afford his own 911 carrera.

sometimes, seeing expensive cars motivates people. it shouldn't bee seen as a negative.

cheers.

For me, theres something bland about a third-hand Porsche a president buys.
The thing is, in all modesty, Facebook developer and multi billionaire who slaves himself lives in a rented two storey house in CA. He only has a Honda Acura to ply the wides streets of America, regardless of his wealth.
For a president whose working day starts at 10 and ends at 6, he needs no fast car.
For need of a horsepower maybe, (he's definitely not working like a horse and his power slowly erodes daily) PNoy needs that Porsche, but hes got to buy the NLEX or the whole Carmona circuit for his playground to let him unleash the car's brute power.
Manila's traffic is outrageously damned, gas rates are murderous and a third hand Porsche may well be more than its published buying rate considering storage and shipping costs to the Philippines.
For every Filipino who gawk at the car as it zooms even without the "kwangkwang" preceding it is just another poor insult to the country's Filipinos. I mean, real Filipinos.

however, my friend, one has the right to enjoy the fruits of his work. one has the right to enjoy the blessings God pours on a person through hard work, passionate yearnings, and honest living.

one should not envy or take everything to heart. just because a person drives an expensive car does not mean that it was meant as an insult to one who is poor. dili pood maayo mo think ana.

i for one know of a person who gives and donates to christian / poor charities and also enjoys the fruits of his work.
he drives a mercedes GL series, is a general surgeon in the hospital that i used to do rounds in. but every year, this man
goes back to the philippines and leads free medical missions. because this man gives openly to those who are in need,
because of his hard work (studying over 12 years to earn his M.D, and then specializing) he is able to afford that car,
his house, his lifestyle (Through God's Grace and Blessings). He sacrificed to study, he sacrificed to earn his MD.
And yet, he selflessly gives back to those who normally could not afford his service. Freely. Openly.
God Blesses him abundantly in return for this selfless act.

you enjoy the fruits of your bounty that God gives you. if others envy you for it, that is their own thinking that is misleaded.
not everything should be construed as an insult to the poor. It is God who pours blessings on a person through one's
honest, hard, work. If a man tithes 10% to the church and in return of his faith, is blessed abundantly by God,
should the poor also envy that man's rich bounty? no. of course not. envying , in itself, is a sin.

peace.

blessings of the maids.  that's plural.  gesundheit!  i'd like to believe that you know how to get your own towels now. ;D

bitaw, the rain is a source of joy for children.  i never listened to my mother when she reminded me not to get wet in the rain.  i found excuses to get wet (like pretending to slip in a puddle) just so she would have no more reason to keep me away from playing in the rain and loving its feel on my face.

these days?  ugh.  not anymore.  it would mean bad colds.  worse, it would make me look like a miscast character in a romantic novella, running in the rain in slo-mo, with a lion running after me.

hehehe. oh yes. i can still remember our yayas: yaya arsing (from inabanga; she still works for us in Valencia. Loyal kaayo), yaya inday, yaya rohelia, ug si nanay millie (my father's aunt who took care of me when both my parents were abroad). my father and mother sent all of our yayas to school (high school and college), most of them are now teachers in bohol. so it paid off. my father is a firm believer of the power of education and self-sustenance; a conservative value he was raised with and imbued with by his late father, my grand father, Mr. Rustico A. Lucino.

when i visited philippines this summer, i saw yaya inday (who is now a teacher in Valencia Central Elementary; a head teacher there); she also happens to be my mother's 1st degree cousin. when i went to valencia, i was so happy to see that yaya arsing was the one of the caretakers caring for my lolo ciano. and she has not changed much. aside from her grey hairs; she used to have jet black hair (from my childhood memory). she still labas the clothes in the morning, and makes the best (da best of da best) pinakbet. just the way they make it her hometown of Inabanga. every morning she dresses in white and attends the 6 am morning mass at Valencia's St. Nino Parish Church.

One day, i woke up at 5 am, got ready to attend mass. as i drove my isuzu crosswind to church, i saw yaya arsing walking on the ways towards church. with her white gown and a white sash over her head. very beautiful faith. i went to church and found a seat in the back (the whole church was filled in the morning; hehehe) and saw that yaya arsing had sat down in the front.

i was able to treat her reactive arthritis. i recently just introduced her to a prednisone regimen and warned her of eating too much baka for fear of uric acid buildup for her gout. so i had to make sure to introduce her to colchicine/allopurinol. she is so short now. i remember as i was giving her instructions for the medication, she was looking intently into my eyes. listening every word i told her. i could not help but think of the time when i was a little child. about 4 years old. when i was alone and missing my parents, it was my yaya arsing who used to pikpik and sing me to sleep and would use a paypay so that i could sleep fast. she used to sing me old lullabies to sleep.

i had to stop myself from crying when i saw how old she had gotten. and how sickly she has been. she used to care for me when i was just a baby. even before i was born, my parents had already employed her in our house. now here i was, 25 years old and a medical intern--the one caring for the one who knew me even before i knew how to talk and walk.

it was touching.

before i left for home, she said to me, "Maluuy ang Ginoo nimo, Ondoy...buotan ka kaayo...always be good, ondoy bran bran."

i do miss her. yaya arsing... :)

In Southern Bohol, Eastern Bohol, it is common to call the boy "ONDOY".

I notice that in Tagbilaran, parents call their young sons "DONG" , or "DODONG"

In Valencia, Garcia-Hernandez, Jagna, and even Guindulman, the parents call a young boy as "ONDOY"

One thing that I find uniquely Bolanon is the term, "Jati-Jati'An". A saying that is quite common in Southern Bohol. [Valencia, Dimiao, Garcia-Hernandez]

In Valencia, it is common for the people to also add "AN" or "LA" after a statement.

Eg.,

Boy: Ma, puydi mo adto ta sa Tagbilaran?
Mom: Ngano man doy?
Boy: Naa man gud koy barkada sa Tamblot, Ma.
Mom: Unsa? Jawaang bataa ka! Nag barkada-barkada na diay ka? Sabah diha!
Boy: Di' lagi, Ma, amigo-amiga ra lagi mi.
Mom: Layas! Adto sa simbahan LA!

Putol Diretso Sa O-ten, Wa Nay Kaso-kaso
by Mike Ligalig (as published by the Bohol Standard newspaper

“Truth is indeed stranger than fiction.”

Ambot ngano. Wala man ma-update ang website sa gobyerno.

Matod pa sa usa ka Justice sa Supreme Court, “there should be a special place in hell for all child molesters.”

Botbot! Unsa goy human rights? Tuo man mo anang human rights.

LOL. can't get rid of the native 'accent' eh?

I always laugh when i see the expression of my American friends when I'm hanging out with them.
We'll be in a friend's house hanging out and my parents will call me and I'll start speaking in Bisaya (with full Bol-anon accent).
My friends will all stop and stare/listen to what I'm saying and afterwards ask/comment, "Dude, what did you just say?"

hehehe. I love being able to sound American one minute and then switch to 'Bolanon' style the next.

One is reminded of Solomon, whom God gave a wise and an understanding heart, and riches, and wealth, and honor--and 700 wives and 300 concubines.

8)

Indeed. Solomon the Wise, Solomon the Magnificent. But you see, the reasons why God gave him all the riches is because when God asked Solomon what he wanted and wished for, Solomon asked to know more of God, to be closer to God and to know "His Ways".

Because Solomon did not ask for riches, for wealth, for honor, God rewarded with him a bountiful life. The riches of the world ; the flood gates of Heaven poured on him, Solomon, all that one could ask for in life.

And so it is so that no king in Judea would be as great and wise as Solomon. Before and After.

It is a lesson. Ask for God's knowledge and wisdom, and all the riches of the world will come after.

Matthew 6:33, "Seek ye the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added unto you..."

lol, oh Gec, indeed. Tho i had a classmate, Earl, a Tagalog, who told me that I was not a 'true Filipino' because I could not speak Tagalog.
Besides, why should I learn their 'funny language' when one is already fluent in Bisaya. I communicate with Tagalogs in English. I communicate with Visayans in Bisaya.

Tagalog, in my view, is so feminine sounding (no offense to the Tagalog speakers out there, just my view). Bisaya is much more nobler/ masculine-sounding language. I will continue to learn all the different dialects of the Visayan Language Family: Cebuano, Hiligaynon, Waray-Waray.

when i first entered St. Aloysius School, i was introduced to the class as " lorenzo from the philippines ".

during recess, a group of filipino kids came to introduce themselves to me. shocking. they talked, but i could not understand for the life of me-- their 'funny language'. it was only later that i found out that they were tagalogs. lol. i spoke to them back in binisayang bol-anon, "hoy di jud ko kasabot ninjo."

they looked at me and said, "ano sabihin mo? hindi kita intindihan."

lol.

lol. talk about a cultural experience; more of culture shock considering i came from a rather homogenous society such as the philippines.

a fellow classmate of mine , dan, who also recently immigrated to america that year (his family came from davao; so we both talked in bisaya to each other..lol...since most of the filipino kids in school were tagalogs; hence we couldn't communicate to them in their "funny language") :)

dan and i befriended nigerians and african immigrants in our class. i remember so clearly what dan said to me, regarding our new african friends.

The wellspring of all wisdom and understanding--Is The Lord.

1  My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee;
2 So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding;
3 Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding;
4 If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures;
5 Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.
6 For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.

ah, but this is better:

20 Whence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of understanding?
21 Seeing it is hid from the eyes of all living, and kept close from the fowls of the air.
22 Destruction and death say, We have heard the fame thereof with our ears.
23 God understandeth the way thereof, and he knoweth the place thereof.
24 For he looketh to the ends of the earth, and seeth under the whole heaven;
25 To make the weight for the winds; and he weigheth the waters by measure.
26 When he made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder:
27 Then did he see it, and declare it; he prepared it, yea, and searched it out.
28 And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.

they are a fringe group; more cultist than mainstream christian ideology. indeed, it is a shame that there are those who would take advantage of a national tragedy , as in the Arizona Shootings, and use it for political, or in this case, religious attention.

Bohol Chronicle: The ambush of two members of the Uy family of Baclayon town, known wealthy copra buyers, may not only be plain robbery.

This was the observation of PNP Prov'l Director Constantino Barot Jr. who immediately headed Task Force Uy to hunt the perpetrators who shot dead Conchita Realista Uy, 69 while seriously wounding her brother, Angelito, 66 while both were on board their multicab cruising the highway in barangay Canapnapan, Corella town last Thursday morning.

The PNP director said that the manner the suspects chased the victims whose multicab already fell on a canal could prove something beyond the motive of robbery. In fact, some paper bills amounting to P31,000 were found in the exit route of the suspects.

Robbers normally declare a hold-up, Barot said.

However, in the case of the Uys, the suspects never declared a hold-up but just kept on firing, aiming at the seat of Angelita, based on the traces of bullets in the vehicle.

"We are in doubt that robbery was the main motive," the PNP director theorized.

Police Inspector Miguel Jimenez from PNP Corella said the Uys who are engaged in copra buying were heading to Corella town when two unknown suspects on board a black and white XRM motorcycle tried to overtake the multicab driven by Angelito.

Sensing the danger, Angelito sped up the vehicle. However, the back rider of the motorcycle started to fire shots aiming to the victims until a bullet hit one of the tires.

The Uys moved farther ahead until the other tire was again hit which caused the vehicle to skid towards a canal.

In its initial investigation, the police noted that the suspects went past the victims' vehicle and turned back for a clean shot on Angelita, causing her instantaneous death.

A 23-year old helper of the Uys who was at the back of the vehicle managed to jump from the multicab and sought refuge in a nearby house.

The suspects, after hitting the victims, took the brown shoulder bag containing an undetermined amount of cash and immediately escaped heading towards Sikatuna town, police investigators said.

Responding police personnel recovered paper bills in the two brown shoulder bags amounting to P31,560 left by the suspects as they hurriedly left the crime scene.

The Uys were rushed to the Ramiro Hospital where Conchita was confirmed dead while her brother was attended to by physicians. Angelito was transferred to another hospital where he has been pronounced out of danger. (Anthony Aniscal)

As is well-known, what set the stage for all semantic considerations in the Middle Ages was Aristotle's "semantic triangle", the conception sketched at the beginning of his On Interpretation, according to which words immediately signify the concepts of the mind and it is by the mediation of these concepts that they signify the things. Aquinas comments on the relevant passage as follows:

Therefore 'passions of the soul' must be understood here as conceptions of the intellect, and names, verbs, and speech signify these conceptions of the intellect immediately according to the teaching of Aristotle. They cannot immediately signify things, as is clear from the mode of signifying, for the name 'man' signifies human nature in abstraction from singulars; hence it is impossible that it immediately signify a singular man. The Platonists for this reason held that it signified the separated idea of man. But because in Aristotle's teaching man in the abstract does not really subsist, but is only in the mind, it was necessary for Aristotle to say that vocal sounds signify the conceptions of the intellect immediately and things by means of them.[7]

So signification is dependent on acts of human thought: by our words we signify whatever we can think of, whether it actually exists or not. For there is no doubt that we can think of something that does not exist, whence, on this conception, it follows that our words also can signify something that does not exist. Thus it is no wonder that at another place Aquinas writes as follows:

In response we have to say that there is a three-fold diversity between things signified by names. For some are in total, complete being outside the soul; and such are complete beings, as a man or a stone. Some have nothing outside the soul, as dreams or the imagination of a chimera. And some have some foundation in the reality outside the soul, but their formal account [ratio] is completed by the operation of the soul, as is clear in the case of universals. For humanity is something in reality, but there it is not universal, for there is no some humanity outside the soul common to many, but as it is conceived by the intellect, by the intellect's operation a further concept [intentio] is adjoined to it, on account of which it is called a species.[8]

The First Way: Argument from Motion

   1.

Our senses prove that some things are in motion.
   2.

Things move when potential motion becomes actual motion.
   3.

Only an actual motion can convert a potential motion into an actual motion.
   4.

Nothing can be at once in both actuality and potentiality in the same respect (i.e., if both actual and potential, it is actual in one respect and potential in another).
   5.

      Therefore nothing can move itself.
   6.

Therefore each thing in motion is moved by something else.
   7.

The sequence of motion cannot extend ad infinitum.
   8.

Therefore it is necessary to arrive at a first mover, put in motion by no other; and this everyone understands to be God.

The Second Way: Argument from Efficient Causes

   1.

We perceive a series of efficient causes of things in the world.
   2.

      Nothing exists prior to itself.
   3.

Therefore nothing is the efficient cause of itself.
   4.

If a previous efficient cause does not exist, neither does the thing that results.
   5.

Therefore if the first thing in a series does not exist, nothing in the series exists.
   6.

The series of efficient causes cannot extend ad infinitum into the past, for then there would be no things existing now.
   7.

Therefore it is necessary to admit a first efficient cause, to which everyone gives the name of God.

The Third Way: Argument from Possibility and Necessity (Reductio argument)

   1.

We find in nature things that are possible to be and not to be, that come into being and go out of being i.e., contingent beings.
   2.

Assume that every being is a contingent being.
   3.

For each contingent being, there is a time it does not exist.
   4.

Therefore it is impossible for these always to exist.
   5.

Therefore there could have been a time when no things existed.
   6.

Therefore at that time there would have been nothing to bring the currently existing contingent beings into existence.
   7.

Therefore, nothing would be in existence now.
   8.

We have reached an absurd result from assuming that every being is a contingent being.
   9.

Therefore not every being is a contingent being.
  10.

Therefore some being exists of its own necessity, and does not receive its existence from another being, but rather causes them. This all men speak of as God.

The Fourth Way: Argument from Gradation of Being

   1.

There is a gradation to be found in things: some are better or worse than others.
   2.

Predications of degree require reference to the “uttermost” case (e.g., a thing is said to be hotter according as it more nearly resembles that which is hottest).
   3.

The maximum in any genus is the cause of all in that genus.
   4.

Therefore there must also be something which is to all beings the cause of their being, goodness, and every other perfection; and this we call God.

The Fifth Way: Argument from Design

   1.

We see that natural bodies work toward some goal, and do not do so by chance.
   2.

      Most natural things lack knowledge.
   3.

But as an arrow reaches its target because it is directed by an archer, what lacks intelligence achieves goals by being directed by something intelligence.
   4. Therefore some intelligent being exists by whom all natural things are directed to their end; and this being we call God.

A time to weep, and a time to laugh;

Niño for the officiating priest (Fr. Kiernan) to bless.  After the mass, we had lunch and a little festivity.  It was nice!

I am ashamed to accept that it was then that learned what is the "Pit" in the Pit Senyor!

large corporations such as marlboro even fund 'anti-smoking' commercials. hypocrisy eh? lol.

Nong, great article. The gene that is altered , Delta-P53 Gene, is also a tumor suppressor gene. Smoking destroys these tumor suppressor genes, hence, in cases of long-term smokers, their lung cancer development is due to the destruction of their P-53 tumor suppressor genes.

With the destruction of the body's P53 tumor suppressor genes, tumors / cancers can develop in the breast, lungs, pancreas, colon, liver, etc. Global effect.
