there is one book that talks about real love 1 Corinthians 13:4-8

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.

A funny thing about this :)

The revolution agains the french started in my city (Mostoles) and now we celebrate the independency day in 2nd may every year in spain because of that.

But the funny thing is my city was officially at war with all France till 1997 I think, because the mayor that started the revolution rejected to sign the peace by that time.

200.000 people in a city with no army "at war" against France lol :D

Ricardo,

The capitulation of Spain during the late 18th century was impeccable to both sides. The French Army overwhelmed the Spanish Military, which was severely undermanned.

Spain, which relied on its age-old alliance with the former Absolutist Capet Dynasty of France (the guillotined Louis XVI was the last Capetian King) secured the age-old Spanish-French border across the Pyranees. However, the French Revolution changed everything.

Spain, for the first time in its history was invaded by its old friend and historical ally.

The Mighty Spanish Empire's own Mother Country was occupied. Again, the reasons for this was because Spain's Military was abroad in its colonies. It was a classic example of a 'strategic nightmare'. Had Spain had its military in Spain at the time, there is no doubt that the Spanish Empire would have been able to stamp out the French Invasion , and as it did in the 16th century, invade France proper.
Napoleonic France took advantage of the situation, as it did during its war with the 1st 2nd Coalition. He effectively took advantage of Spain's weakness at the time. To the detriment of the Spanish Empire.

The suicide of Reyes and the loss of power of President Mubarak of Egypt this week is a lesson to us all.

1. The wealthy and powerful today are not so 'untouchable' as we speak.

-The reason why I say this is because both men led a corrupt life, a life of taking advantage of institution at hand, which ultimately will give way to truth. Mubarak, who was president of Egypt for over 30 year cede power to the protesters after a long standing revolt. To think that 3 weeks ago, this man sat as the modern day Pharaoh of Egypt, whose wealth is beyond 80 Billion Dollars. Now where is his wealth? Where is his power? He lost everything and learned a lesson late in his life--that is that God does not forget nor is God deaf and blind. Justice will come. God humbles those who take advantage of the poor and maligns those who are powerless. God's Justice may not be immediate, but His justice is surely definite and accords itself in His own time. Through His Grace.

As for Mr. Reyes, whatever life he lived, the corruption scandal that ate away at him, must have been so grave to have led him to despair and abandon life through suicide. His secrets that were made in the dark were revealed. And will always be revealed. He could not withstand the effects of the Truth, unforunately.

Truth will always come out, as what Holy Roman Catholic Bible reminds us brothers and sisters in Christ:

Luke 12:2-3

2For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known.

3 Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops.

Mao nay saktong Kristiyano... he/she knows he/she is not God!!!  ;D Morag si San Juan Bautista!!!  ;D

Of course, Fr. Roel. It is important for us to remind each other pood not to commit suicide. Because the act of suicide, is giving in to the temptation of the devil. It is the thesis of total despair. God does not want us to despair, he is the opposite of despair. He is the source of faith, hope, preservation, perserverance.

Christ died on the Cross for us all, so that we may have life through Him. All of our lives are precious to Him.

The act of taking it, is an affront to God who so died on the cross for us.

God Bless.
Just sharing my view lang, Fr. Roel.

Peace to all.

Only God know's what happen to Mr. Angelo Reyes who knows before the bullet hit him he actually have conversation with God and repent his sin.  So it is very uncharitable for all of us to judge him nga tua naa siya sa Hell. We can never know the mind of another person, or the state of their soul. That is known to God alone.
Ang Ginoo ray nasayod.God may still have forgiven him because his love and compassion are endless and we have no idea to the extent of Gods power is..

The tiniest gesture of faith can save a person. A man who embraces a crucifix on his deathbed can gain the kingdom of God. Once a woman told St. John Vianney that she was devastated because her husband had committed suicide. In a moment of mystical insight that only a great saint can receive, John Vianney exclaimed, "He is saved!" The woman was incredulous so the saint repeated, stressing each word, "I tell you he is saved. He is in Purgatory, and you must pray for him. Between the parapet of the bridge and the water he had time to make an act of contrition."*

God can save a person in an instance - by a single act of faith.

To Raquel and Father, yes that is indeed true. A single act of faith and repentance could have been powerful enough to grant his soul salvation from the eternal fires of hell. Since he shot himself in the chest, meaning his death was not as instant as a gun shot to the head--he could have , hypothetically speaking, asked God for his forgiveness as he was dying.

My point is that suicide is in itself a moral violation , and a direct  grave offense to the Life God has given us all stewardship of.

If we sin, if we have premarital sex, if we commit sins, and if these sins are so great that drives us to make penance through the Sacrament of Reconciliation, then the sins are absolved. Totally and Absolutely.

However, when an individual commits suicide, he or she denies the possiblity of repentance through the sacrament of reconciliation.

---

I will pray that God was merciful to Mr. Reyes. One can only hope for the saving grace of God--who searches all souls and sees truths behind lies.

Mr. Reyes should not have despaired. I can tell he was tormented severely by the devil , who hounded him to shoot himself. To escape the troubles of his life--a short term solution to such a short term problem.

The issue here is the long term. Eternal Life and the state of Grace.

I pray that God was merciful to him.

The Roman Catholic Church teaches that "Christ conferred the power to forgive sins only upon the apostles and their successors" (Spirago, Francis and Clarke, Richard. The Catechism Explained: An Exhaustive Explanation of the Catholic Religion, TAN Publishing, 1994). The Anglican and Eastern Orthodox communities generally agree with the Catholic Church on this position, though they challenge the Vatican's assertion that it solely represents apostolic authority today.

This is why "last rites" are given. So, if a person commits suicide, then presumably he or she has not had "last rites" administered, and he or she enters eternity with unconfessed sins (including and especially the final act of taking one's own life).

Considering Angelo Reyes was not given last rites prior to his suicide, and since he took  his life in such an act of desperation, his soul passed with unconfessed sin. He was, however, given Catholic burial.

I pray that God was just and merciful in his judgment. If his soul was spared the fires of hell and is in purgatory, then it is by the mercy of God who alone offers the breath of salvation.

diba ang high points of the Catechism on its teachings on suicide are as follows:

#1 "Everyone is responsible for his life before God who has given it to him. It is God who remains the sovereign Master of life. We are obliged to accept life gratefully and preserve it for his honor and the salvation of our souls. We are stewards, not owners, of the life God has entrusted to us. It is not ours to dispose of."

# 2 "Suicide contradicts the natural inclination of the human being to preserve and perpetuate his life. It is gravely contrary to the just love of self. It likewise offends love of neighbor because it unjustly breaks the ties of solidarity with family, nation, and other human societies to which we continue to have obligations. Suicide is contrary to love for the living God."

#3  "If suicide is committed with the intention of setting an example, especially to the young, it also takes on the gravity of scandal."

#4  "Voluntary co-operation in suicide is contrary to the moral law."

I don't love you, not at all; on the contrary, I detest you. You're a naught, gawky, foolish Cinderella.

You never write me; you don't love your own husband; you know what pleasures your letters give him, and yet you haven't written him six lines, dashed of so casually!

What do you do all day, Madam? What is the affair so important as to leave you no time to write to your devoted lover?

What affection stifles and puts to one side the love, the tender constant love you promised him?

Of what sort can be that marvellous being, that new lover that tyrannises over your days, and prevents your giving any attention to your husband?

Josephine, take care! Some fine night, the doors will be broken open and there I'll be.

Indeed, I am very uneasy, my love, at receiving no news of you; write me quickly for pages, pages full of agreeable things which shall fill my heart with the pleasantest feelings.

I hope before long to crush you in my arms and cover you with a million kisses as though beneath the equator.

Napoleon Bonaparte
#24922
Dec. 29, 1795

I awake all filled with you. Your image and the intoxicating pleasures of last night, allow my senses no rest.

Sweet and matchless Josephine, how strangely you work upon my heart.

Are you angry with me? Are you unhappy? Are you upset?

My soul is broken with grief and my love for you forbids repose. But how can I rest any more, when I yield to the feeling that masters my inmost self, when I quaff from your lips and from your heart a scorching flame?

Yes! One night has taught me how far your portrait falls short of yourself!

You start at midday: in three hours I shall see you again.

Till then, a thousand kisses, mio dolce amor! but give me none back for they set my blood on fire.

April 24, 1796

My brother will bring you this letter. I have the greatest love for him and I hope he will gain yours; he deserves it. Nature has given him a sweet and utterly good character; he is full of good qualities.

I am writing to Barras to get him appointed consul in some Italian port. He wants to live with his little wife far away from the hurly-burly and political affairs; I commend him to you.

I have your letters of the 16th and the 21st. There are many days when you don't write. What do you do, then?

No, my darling, I am not jealous, but sometimes worried.

Come soon; I warn you, if you delay, you will find me ill. Fatigue and your absence are too much.

Your letters are the joy of my days, and my days are happiness are not many.

Junot is bringing twenty-two flags to Paris. You must come back with him, do you understand?

Hopeless sorrow, inconsolable misery, sadness without end, if I am so unhappy as to see him return alone.

Adorable friend, he will see you, he will breathe in your temple; perhaps you will grant him the unique and perfect flavor of kissing your cheek, and I shall be alone and far, far away.

But you are coming, aren't you? You are going to be here beside me, in my arms, on my breast, on my mouth.

Take wing and come, come! But travel gently. The road is long, bad, tiring.

Suppose you had an accident, or fell ill; suppose fatigue- come gently, my adorable love, but I think of you often.

I have received a letter from Hortense. I will write to her. She is altogether charming. I love her and will soon send her the perfumes she wants.

Read Ossian's poem "Carthon" carefully, and sleep well and happily far from your good friend, but thinking of him.

A kiss on the heart, and one lower down, much lower!

B.

I don't know if you need money; you have never talked about your affairs. If so, you can ask my brother, who has 200 louis of mine.

Its quite shameful to think that in a supposed Catholic country, the level of corruption is so rampant. These officials who now feel the guilt of their actions after this man's suicide is not an excuse for their actions, nor does it exempt them from their dereliction of duty and abuse.

As for Reyes, the pressure of political ravelings should not have been a reason for his suicide. Former President Estrada never took his life even after his disgraceful loss of Presidential Power by People's Power a decade ago. The same goes for Former President Ferdinand Marcos, who himself was disgraced from political power.

It is a shame that he took his life, and his taking of his life does not pardon him of his abuse of power, nor does it give his name greater light. His apparent suicide is the very epitome of a coward.

I am sorry Mr. Reyes, but you cannot escape The Final Judge and His Judgment..where you are going. You may have evaded Philippine Justice, but you cannot hide from Providence now.

Suicide is an unpardonable Sin. His soul is now burning in eternal fires of hell.

It was really frustrating, for me, as a Filipino that he killed himself just like that. i think it was an easy way out for him, so frustrating, because the truth didnt come up. and what about the high hierarchy of the corrupt people behind of Mr. Reyes? will just laugh out loud kasi abswelto na naman sila? God Bless, Philippines!

He should not have committed suicide and taken the coward's way out. Instead, should have taken problems of life head on. These problems were lessons that God was sending him to teach him a lesson for his corrupt ways. Instead of learning, he tried to escape it--in this life.

Suicide, in Roman Catholic Teaching, is a great sin.

May God be merciful to his eternal soul.

Lately nakakita ko ug program nga giatake nila ang Katoliko. Kadtong mga "traditions" daw nga gisunod sa Katoliko like mass, bunjag sa bata, hasta ganing ang pagdili sa pari nga mag-asawa. ;D

Deign may I ask what version of the bible they are reading. Revisionist version probably. Christian Worship Tradition is fully and totally legitimized in Scripture:

Quote“Therefore, brethren, stand fast and hold the traditions which you were taught, whether by word or our epistle.”

--Thessalonians 2:15
Again, these iconic arguments of INC officials is typical of false doctrinal purveyors. The Doctrine of Scriptural Truth goes in line with the Doctrine of Religious Tradition.

Brother, one cannot expect the blind and deaf to hear if they are unwilling to receive treatment. They deny the Divinity of Jesus Christ. They are not Christian nor is their Church teaching Truth. It is falsehood to the extreme.

The Lake of Everlasting Fire, which is Hell, awaits them and those who deny Christ Jesus as Lord and Savior.

Today we're going to go drive out of the city, some 40 miles north to look for leather briefcases and a leather shoulder bag for the both of us.
Something that is sturdy, classy, yet reticent at the same time. Then spend the rest of the day out and about.

I need this weekend to relax and just enjoy my youth.

I'm going to see if we can visit this one really nice wine bar up north by the Italian District of Chicago.

It is very hard to see a patient pass. This one particular patient was in the ICU for quite sometime, hanging on, but developed pulmonary embolism even despite intensive care by well trained nurses, respiratory therapists, doctors. Doctors are not God. We cannot save everyone, nor can we treat and cure every single ailment. All our measures and abilities is to try to prolong life/ delay death.

The Master of all Life is The Lord God. It is He who deigns when life will begin, and when it shall end.

For those who read this, I do ask that you pray for me. Pray for me because the Medical Internship Years are truly the hardest years.

Anonymous Diary Blog / Re: Blowing Some Steam

Today , today. Today is a stressful day here in the hospital. I'm currently taking some 'time off' as I sit down in the medical resident/ medical student office. It seems like free time is running scarce here in the hospital. Kalingaw man ta i-orderan da. Jati-a!

Unsa...well let me think. (so much happened yesterday and today)!

Work is work (usual). Pero its getting more intense everyday. I attended an ACLS (advanced cardiac life support) class yesterday with EKG competency followup. The attending physician/physician instructor is hardcore. She teaches well and really went over good EKGs.
I feel much more competent in reading and interpreting patient EKGs now, from basis of their rhythm, rate, axis, qrs, pr intervals, u or t wave inversions. To be honest, before the class, my understanding of EKG was subpar, as were most of us. Attending the class really opened my interest in cardiac interpretation. In mean, through the class we were able to read and interpret not only wheter a patient was right axis deviated, left axis deviated or extreme right axis deviated, interpreted whether if the patient had a history of left ventricular hypertrophy, right atrial atrophy, could see if this patient had a previous MI, to prognosis of a possible MI. Amazing. The professor was tough, disciplined, and really broke us in order to build us up again. I was appreciative.

Today, as we started work. We had a patient that coded. Luoy pood. Code Blue was initiated and we rushed down to see the intensive cardiac resuscitative measures. The patient had a pulmonary embolism. We could not bring him back. The very first time I saw a patient flat line. It was intense. Shocking. Luoy pood intawn. Yesterday i was talking to him. Karon, wala na.

The lesson i learn from this is twofold:

1. Life is fragile; you will never know when your time is up, even when everything seems alright, stable.
2. Cardiac and pulmonary check ups are necessary and should be done regularly. This patient did not take care of himself, medically and mentally.

As a medical student, i try my best to be the best. And with honest and true intent. Pero, as I am learning now, through the medical internship years, i realize that we cannot save everyone. That the Hand of God chooses to take those whom He calls. And when He calls us home, we deign to bow to His decree.

My thought for the day.

This morning, as i did my surgical rounds, i was able to assist in a surgical excision of an adenomatous growth in the patient's sublingual apparatus. Surgery was completed through orthoscopic methods, with no instance of explorative surgery. it was amazing how quick surgical excision of said neoplasm on the patient's sublingual apparatus; the attending surgeon was, in my honest opinion, a 'pro'.

surgery took less than 20 minutes.

Manage Treatment:

Surgical treatment of adenomas may become necessary when the base of the polyp is too wide for snaring, increasing the risk of incomplete removal or perforation of the bowel wall. Suspicion of malignancy may also indicate surgery. Multiple adenomas not controlled by snare polypectomy can be treated by colectomy.

Treatment and Management : (Psychotherapy, Lifestyle Change, Psychopharmacology)

Medications that may be used include:

    *

Antidepressants called SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) are the most commonly used medications for panic disorder. They include fluoxetine (Prozac), sertraline (Zoloft), paroxetine (Paxil), fluvoxamine (Luvox), citalopram (Celexa), and escitalopram (Lexapro).
    *

Serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) and other antidepressants.
    *

If SSRIs or SNRIs do not help, benzodiazepines may be used. They include alprazolam (Xanax), clonazepam (Klonopin), and lorazepam (Ativan). However, people can become dependant on or addicted to drugs in this class of medications. Ideally, these drugs should be used only on a temporary basis.
    *

Other antidepressants and some anti-seizure drugs may be used for severe cases.
    *

Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), such as phenelzine (Nardil), tranylcypramine (Parnate), and isocarboxazid (Marplan), are only used when the other drugs do not work. Although they can be very helpful for treating panic disorders, MAOIs have serious side effects and can interact with other drugs and foods.

Cognitive-behavioral therapies should be used together with drug therapy. Ten to 20 visits with a mental health professional should take place over a number of weeks. Common parts of this therapy include:

    *

Gaining understanding of and control over distorted views of life stressors, such as other people's behavior or life events.
    *

Learning to recognize and replace panic-causing thoughts to decrease the sense of helplessness.
    *

Learning stress management and relaxation techniques to help when symptoms occur.
    *

Practicing systematic desensitization and exposure therapy, in which you are asked to relax, then imagine the things that cause the anxiety, working from the least fearful to the most fearful. Gradual exposure to the real-life situation also has been used with success to help people overcome their fears.

Panic disorder is a type of anxiety disorder in which someone has repeated attacks of intense fear that something bad will occur when not expected. The person lives in fear that another attack will occur.

Etiology and Epidemiology

The exact cause of panic disorders is unknown. Genetics may play a role. Studies suggest that if one identical twin has panic disorder, the other twin will also develop the condition 40% of the time. However, panic disorder often occurs when there is no family history.

Panic disorder is twice as common in women as in men. Symptoms usually begin before age 25, but may occur in the mid 30s. Although panic disorder may occur in children, it is often not diagnosed until they are older.

Before a diagnosis of panic disorder is made, people with this condition often have had visits to emergency rooms and health care providers for symptoms related to possible heart attack or other physical symptoms.

Clinical Signs and Symptoms:

With panic disorder, at least four of the following symptoms occur during an attack:

      Chest pain or discomfort

      Dizziness or faintness

      Fear of dying

Fear of losing control or impending doom

      Feeling of choking

      Feelings of detachment

      Feelings of unreality

      Nausea or upset stomach

Numbness or tingling in the hands, feet, or face

Palpitations, fast heart rate, or pounding heart

Sensation of shortness of breath or smothering

      Sweating, chills, or hot flashes

      Trembling or shaking

Science and Research / What Is Scoliosis?
February 09, 2011, 06:43:11 AM

Scoliosis is a curving of the spine. The spine curves away from the middle or sideways.

A doctor may suspect scoliosis if one shoulder appears to be higher than the other, or the pelvis appears to be tilted. Untrained observers often do not notice the curving in the earlier stages.

Other symptoms can include:

      Backache or low-back pain

      Fatigue

      Shoulders or hips appear uneven

Spine curves abnormally to the side (laterally)

There may be fatigue in the spine after prolonged sitting or standing. Pain will become persistent if there is irritation to the soft tissue and wear and tear of the spine bones.

Note: Kyphoscoliosis also involves abnormal front to back curvature, with a "rounded back" appearance
