At the end of the war, Oskar Schindler presented a speech to his Jewish factory workers stating: "Don’t thank me for your survival...Thank your valiant Stern and Pemper, who stared death in the face constantly."

Amon Leopold Goeth

Pemper testified against Amon Göth at his September 1946 trial in Kraków, Poland, following the end of the war.

He served as a consultant for Steven Spielberg's 1993 film, Schindler's List.

Pemper was portrayed by actor Grzegorz Kwas in the film.

Many on the list were personal Jewish workers for Schindler with additional names added just before the transport. Those on the list, including Pemper himself, were transferred to Schindler's new grenade factory located in Bruennlitz, Czechoslovakia, in October 1944. This transfer ended up saving the lives of those who were put on the list.

Jakob Pemper (Father), Regina Pemper (his mother), and Mietek Pemper

Schindler also included Pemper's father, mother and brother on the list. Pemper's mother Regina didn't make it to the new factory in Bruennlitz, because of her illness; she was left behind in Auschwitz and later liberated when the war had ended. (wikipedia)

Pemper helped collaborate the now famous "Schindler's List" to save as many Jewish workers as possible.

Pemper, in collaboration with Schindler and others in the PÅ,aszów concentration camp including Itzhak Stern, compiled and typed the list of over 1,000 Jewish inmates deemed "decisive for the Nazi war effort". (wikipedia)

MieczysÅ,aw "Mietek" Pemper (24 March 1920 â€" 7 June 2011)

[Mietek Pemper] was assigned as the personal secretary and stenographer to Amon Göth {the notorious commandant of PÅ,aszów, a Nazi labor and concentration camp in Poland) due to his previous work at the Kraków Ghetto's Judenrat.

Pemper's position as Göth's assistant gave him rare access to documents sent to Göth from Nazi authorities. By working in Göth's office, Pemper also became an acquaintance of Oskar Schindler, an ethnic German businessman and industrialist with ties to the black market. (wikipedia)

He was quoted as saying "I knew the people who worked for me... When you know people, you have to behave towards them like human beings."

The writer Herbert Steinhouse, who interviewed Schindler in 1948 at the behest of some of the surviving Schindlerjuden (Schindler's Jews), wrote:

"Oskar Schindler's exceptional deeds stemmed from just that elementary sense of decency and humanity that our sophisticated age seldom sincerely believes in. A repentant opportunist saw the light and rebelled against the sadism and vile criminality all around him. The inference may be disappointingly simple, especially for all amateur psychoanalysts who would prefer the deeper and more mysterious motive that may, if it is true, still lie unprobed and unappreciated. But an hour with Oskar Schindler encourages belief in the simple answer." (wikipedia)

Oskar Schindler's final resting place

Schindler's grave is located on the mountainside below Zion Gate and the Old City walls. Stones placed on top of the grave are a sign of gratitude from Jewish visitors, according to Jewish tradition, although Schindler himself was not Jewish. On his grave, the Hebrew inscription reads: "Righteous among the Nations", an honorific used by the State of Israel to describe non-Jews who risked their lives during the Holocaust to save Jews from extermination by the Nazis. The German inscription reads: "The Unforgettable Lifesaver of 1200 Persecuted Jews". (wikipedia)

In 1971, Schindler moved to live with friends at Goettingstrasse Nr. 30 in Hildesheim. Due to a heart complaint he was taken to the Saint Bernward Hospital in Hildesheim on 12 September 1974, where he died on 9 October 1974, at the age of 66. At the time of his death, he was surrounded by friends and family. He died penniless; the costs for his stay in the hospital were paid from social welfare of the city of Hildesheim. (wikipedia)

Oskar Schindler (center) with some of his Jewish workers at the Krakow enamel factory around 1943

As the Holocaust continued Schindler used his lists to protect the over 1,200 workers and their families on his list.

He would go out of his way to convince SS inspectors that women, children and even the disabled were essential workers in his factory to spare them from being sent to the camps.

Having spent his fortune on bribes and black-market wares to for his workers, a destitute Schindler and his wife fled to Austria after the war.

He died, penniless, in Germany in 1974 at the age of 66, and was buried in Jerusalem. His grave carries the Hebrew inscription 'Righteous among the Nations'.

He employed a large number of Jewish workers in his factory, mainly due to the lower costs of employing Jews after the German invasion.

After witnessing a raid during the liquidation of the Krakow ghetto, Oskar Schindler was shocked to find many of his employees murdered and created his legendary list of 'Schindlerjuden' (Schindler's Jews) to be spared from deportation to work in his factory.

It was made possible thanks to his German-speaking Jewish accountant Itzhak Stern and Schindler's close relationships with high-ranking SS officers in Krakow.

The Thing, also known as the Great Seal bug, was one of the first covert listening devices (or "bugs") to use passive techniques to transmit an audio signal. (wikipedia)

In 1946, Soviet school children presented a two foot wooden replica of the Great Seal of the United States to Ambassador Averell Harriman.

The Ambassador hung the seal in his office in Spaso House. During George F. Kennan’s ambassadorship in 1952, a routine security check discovered that the seal contained a microphone and a resonant cavity which could be stimulated from an outside radio signal. (http://jollyblog.squarespace.com/)

from forum members of http://forums.catholic.com/ on the question of how much does the pope receive as salary:

"If I'm not mistaken, JPII died with pretty much nothing to his name besides his favorite pair of shoes."

"The pope receives his salary after he passes away - he is buried with it. He receives one gold, silver, and copper euro coin for each year of service. I believe JPII was buried with just over 100 euro."

When he stepped down on Thursday, he said that he was glad to be “surrounded by the beauty of creation,” reported The Associated Press. “I am simply a pilgrim beginning the last leg of his pilgrimage on this Earth,” he added.

Next Monday, cardinals will meet to determine the next papal conclave to elect the new pope.

“May the College of Cardinals work like an orchestra, where diversityâ€"an expression of the universal churchâ€"always works toward a higher and harmonious agreement,” Benedict said, according to AP.

What about waiting to retire until 85, as Benedict did? The average American retires at about 64, so working that long is unusual, Johnson noted.

“If you have a job you love, it’s great,” he said.

“(But) just like the pope, the biggest determinant of retirement is health status. When your health starts to deteriorate, that’s what often pushes people into retirement, sometimes earlier than expected.”

Health care costs are one of the big risks that older Americans face, and while Medicare pays for the bulk of their expenses, many things are left uncovered, Johnson said. Meanwhile, the pope emeritus will continue to be a member of the Vatican’s generous private health care policy, the BBC reported.
#24439
The Roman Catholic Church will cover the expenses of Pope Emeritus Benedict, born Joseph Ratzinger, and will give him a Vatican home with cooked meals and housekeepers, the report said.

A big nest egg is not something the Pope emeritus has to worry about. The Roman Catholic Church will cover his living expenses, provide him with a spacious home inside the Vatican and pay for everything from cooked meals to housekeepers, according to The Telegraph.

Such services are not available to the typical American senior, unless he or she pays for an assisted living facility or resides in a nursing home, Johnson said.
#24440
That translates to almost $3,300, or close to the monthly maximum of $3,350 that Social Security will pay to an American who retires this year.

“That’s quite rare,” Richard Johnson of Urban Institute told the broadcaster. One would have to wait until 70 when they retire and would have had to make the maximum pay stipulated by Social Security for a long time.

“For most people, if you look at the median, Social Security counts for about 40 per cent of their income. So it’s important, but people rely a lot on other savings, like pensions or 401(k) savings,” Johnson added.

Pope Benedict’s retirement package

By Sam Eyoboka with Agency reportMarch 2, 2013

After Pope Benedict XVI retires, he will get a 2,500-euro pension, a home in the Vatican, and other amenities. How does his retirement package compare with others?

Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, the 264th successor of Pope Peter and the 265th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church, who made his final farewell Thursday evening, is likely to have a much better retirement package than most American seniors, according to a CNBC contributor.

The retired pontiff is expected to receive a monthly pension of 2,500 euros ($3,266), which is near the maximum a person could receive on US Social Security, according to Italian newspaper La Stampa.

as for the monetary figure, here's a believable one, the source/s of which i can share as well--

italian media speculations:

Pope Benedict XVI who announced his resignation from office with effect from February 28 will be paid a pension of 2,500 euros a month, or about $3,340 according to several Italian media outlets, which quoted the amount of the pension usually paid to bishops.

The head of the Catholic Church does not officially have an income and doesn’t really get paid, the Vatican has said repeatedly in response to inquiries from the press over the years, adding that “he has his every need provided for by the Holy See”.

The Italian press however said, “but we know what Benedict will make once he relinquishes the papacy on Feb. 28. He will be paid a pension of 2,500 euros a month, or about $3,340".

There is no precedent for a papal pension. The last one to resign was in 1415; everybody else died in office but there are cases of retired bishops, and the pope is officially also the bishop of Rome.

The Vatican press office did not confirm the amount, but a spokesperson said that the pope’s needs, as well as those of whatever staff he might choose to retain in the Vatican monastery he is retiring to, “will be met.” (http://www.porscheclassy.com/2013/02/pope-benedict-to-earn-3340-retirement.html)

still, this is pure media speculation and not an official information.  it had to be taken in context.  and there's a whale of a difference between 32,000 euro and 2,500 euro.

Benedict XVI’s action may be a small step in stripping the papal office of the ensnaring mystique and unnecessary burden it has accumulated through the years. Nonetheless, his resignation may provide a stable ground from which the church can make a giant leap.

His surprise resignation places the office of Peter in an irreversible trajectory where it can be construed in a way more attuned to a world radically changed almost 5 decades after the Second Vatican Council. - Rappler.com
#24451
Needless to say, if bishops are required to retire upon reaching a certain age, popes, many theologians suggest, should not be exempt. As yet church law only provides legal guarantees for the validity of papal resignation should it happen.

Benedict XVI did not wait for an incurable illness or serious impediment or death. In doing so he is helping rescind the mystique surrounding the figure of popes in the church. Because of this mystique, according to Bishop Kevin Dowling, there is more than a perception “that unquestioning obedience by the faithful to the pope is required and is a sign of the ethos and fidelity of a true Catholic.” Worse, not a few would in fact leave the realms of papal esteem and love to traverse into the territory of fanaticism and myth.
#24452
His resignation is unprecedented in the modern history of the papal office. Most modern popes consider themselves "father of God’s family" and paternity cannot be resigned. On two occasions John Paul II considered the possibility. But he did not after having concluded that a pope could not resign “except in the presence of an incurable illness or an impediment” that would prevent the exercise of the office.

Nonetheless, Benedict XVI’s resignation will hopefully set a precedent in a church accustomed to having popes ruling for life or bishops leading for decades. He is telling us that the office and its demands have priority over the human capacities or personal agenda of the office-holder.
#24453
Courageous leap of faith

Benedict XVI’s decision is also courageous. Why resign now when, as Bruce Bradley, SJ puts it, “we live in a church manifestly struggling to come to terms with its inheritance from Vatican II.” Does Benedict XVI no longer believe the memory of Vatican II as a powerful force for renewal in the church and in the world?

It does not seem he is turning his back on the Council, although the few who are hostile to its vision and spirit would like him to do so. He is rather opening the way for another person who will be more up to the task of reinvigorating the church leadership in coming to terms with the unfinished project of Vatican II. After almost 8 years in office much work remains to be done but, in surrendering the office to the unknown, Benedict XV is making a courageous leap of faith.
#24454
Humble is the leader who does not think and feel he is indispensable. To the whole world Benedict XVI has admitted that “his strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry.” Clearly, unlike many bishops and priests that I know, he does not see his office as a privilege, a status or an entitlement. His is the office of strengthening his fellow bishops, not to lord it over them (1 Peter 5:3). That is why he did not hang on to it and for all his defects he is able to publicly ask for pardon.

Wise is the leader who thinks not of his own good but only the good of the entity he represents. Benedict XVI considers his resignation “a decision of great importance to the life of the Church.” To continue exercising the ministry he inherited from Peter in such a very inadequate personal circumstance would only bring harm than good for the whole church.

It's a lesson for some Filipino bishops and priests who in their old age and obvious inadequacy would rather seek for extension in office or permanence in assignment. They virtually identify the church’s common good with their own personal status and are clueless that their people are unnecessarily bearing the brunt.
#24455
In his 10-minute speech a gentle but firm human being reminded us that theology can be fruitful only in honest and mutual relations with other scientific and intellectual pursuits. He also challenged us to ensure that future priests develop the habits of dialogue and collaboration with people of other competences and expertise. He then spent the rest of the hour attentively listening to our concerns and problems, particularly in our relation to bishops. In the end, he surprised us all by insisting to have a photo with us!

When news broke about Benedict XVI’s resignation, I could not help but recall the side of him that we saw on that memorable summer day. Just as his humility, wisdom and courage left in me a lasting impression, his decision to resign, albeit shocking, is typical of the man: humble, wise and courageous.

The other side of Benedict XVI

by Aloysius Lopez Cartagenas
02/27/2013

In the summer of 1999 I was in a small group which was invited to a meeting with the head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Little did we know he would later become Benedict XVI. We were all rectors of theological seminaries from different places in the world, and ours was the duty of training future priests and, in a certain way, future bishops as well. His was the duty to ensure the correctness of church teachings in these institutions.

All of us were very anxious. Based on portrayals we heard, we could not help but imagined him to be an ogre of a man and expected God’s Rottweiler to lecture us on orthodoxy. But we were all proven wrong.

Many are afraid of the stories they will tell. Or are they afraid to hear the truth and its demands?

“The Church tells the story of Jesus whose words often fell on deaf ears and who was executed so that he could be prevented from telling His story. So in Asia the Church pays tribute to Him by allowing itself to be the storyteller of the voiceless so that Jesus’ voice may be heard in their suppressed stories.”

No to 'triumphalistic, know-it-all' Church

TOO MUCH. For the Bacolod diocese's critics, this is an example of a church that oversteps its boundaries and meddles in partisan politics. Photo by Charlie Saceda

“You may be saying the right things but people will not listen if the manner by which you communicate reminds them of a triumphalistic, know-it-all institution.”

Best food, wine for priests? 'I am disturbed'

FIGHTING CLERICALISM. Cardinal Tagle says bishops and priests shouldn't receive special treatment. File photo from CBCPFIGHTING CLERICALISM. Cardinal Tagle says bishops and priests shouldn't receive special treatment. File photo from CBCP

“Ecclesiastical customs and persons, when naively and narrowly deified and glorified, might become hindrances to true worship and compassion. I am disturbed when some people who do not even know me personally conclude that my being a bishop automatically makes me closer to God than they could ever be. My words are God’s words, my desires are God’s, my anger is God’s, and my actions are God’s. If I am not cautious, I might just believe it and start demanding the offerings of the best food and wine, money, car, house, adulation, and submission. After all, I am 'God'! I might take so much delight in my stature and its benefits that I might end up being callous to the needs of the poor and the earth.”

Modern-day idols: profit, progress, national security

WORKERS' CRUSADER. Described as a 'bishop of the poor,' Cardinal Tagle fights for the rights of laborers. File photo from AFP

“It is sad that those who worship idols sacrifice other people while preserving themselves and their interests. How many factory workers are being denied the right wages for the god of profit? How many women are being sacrificed to the god of domination? How many children are being sacrificed to the god of lust? How many trees, rivers, hills are being sacrificed to the god of 'progress'? How many poor people are being sacrificed to the god of greed? How many defenseless people are being sacrificed to the god of national security?”

Tagle's words that struck the world

by Paterno Esmaquel II

WORLD STAGE. Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Tagle holds his audience 'spellbound' â€" the way Vatican Radio describes it â€" at the International Eucharistic Congress in 2012 in Dublin. Photo from the IEC website

MANILA, Philippines â€" Why do Vatican watchers consider Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle a papal contender?

His speeches, for one, impress them. Speaking at Vatican conferences, Tagle has driven priests to tears and captivated journalists who, even before Benedict XVI quit the papacy, considered him a papabile.

Rappler compiled transcripts from the Vatican, as well as other official sources, to paint a picture of Tagle on the global stage.

In the following speeches, Tagle â€" a former member of the Vatican's International Theological Commission â€" blasts “idols” like the “god of profit,” the “god of 'progress,'” and the “god of national security.” He also hits special treatment for priests, and says the Church needs more humility.

From key Catholic gatherings around the world, we bring you 7 of Tagle's best quotes.

A retailer in Bradford has also come forward to say she might have sold the man his Batman outfit a few days before the incident, which happened in the early hours of February 25.

Kathryn Sutcliffe, who runs The Joke Shop in Kirkgate Market, told BBC Radio 5 Live she remembered one customer because he wanted the 1960s Caped Crusader costume rather than the more recent Dark Knight version.

She said she only sold a couple of these older outfits every year.

Mrs Sutcliffe said: "He was quite a large guy and when I saw him on the CCTV I thought, 'he looks like a similar build'.

"I was quite busy at the time. I took it out, tried it against him and he said, 'oh yes, that's fine', and then he disappeared just as quick.

"He was in his 20s, dark brown hair, a bit of stubble and quite a nice-looking lad, really."

She said the man paid with a credit card, so she has a name, but she refused to reveal it.

'Batman' turns over 'burglar' to police

Just like the superhero in the movies, a man dressed as the mysterious caped crusader Batman has handed over a wanted man at a police station in Bradford, UK before disappearing into the night. Police said the costumed crime-fighter brought the suspect, now charged with stealing goods and other fraud offenses, in the early hours of February 25. Speculations abound on the identity of the 'Batman' after the West Yorkshire Police said they don't know who he is and if the incident was staged. A fancy dress store owner believes she sold the costume to the masked man.

it is not news to begin with.  it is only a feeble attempt, in poor writing at that, at trying to be funny.

if this were true, all the world's newspapers, radio and tv would have had this as their blazing headlines for days on end.  right in our own country, even the sabah issue would have been relegated to the inside pages for this.  there would have been pandemonium; our streets would have been filled with howls and our catholic churches, in possible disarray.  luckily for the writer of this spoof, catholicism does not issue a fatwa.
#24487
obviously just an irreverent spoof.  votive's post does not credit any author, but my understanding as i checked a certain website where this appears is that it's written (or reposted?) by one Emmett Eldred who describes himself as a "Music blogger for inyourspeakers.com, creativeedgemusic.com, and mediroid.com. Future comedian/writer/ruler of the world. He loves when you follow him on twitter (https://twitter.com/emmetteldred) and tweet angry things at him."

this self-styled future comedian still has a long way to go though.  the only funny thing here is how many commenters believe this to be true.  one more sign of the dumbing of america.

Australia is experiencing a mining boom, with thousands of workers attracted by high salaries to remote Outback mines. The West Australian said the miners who lost their jobs had six-figure salaries.

The unnamed worker who spoke to the newspaper said the miners were only "having a bit of fun." A Facebook page set up seeking their reinstatement carried comments supporting the workers as well as people saying safety regulations should be obeyed.

Paddy Gorman, spokesman for the Construction, Forestry, Mining, and Energy Union, said none of the miners at Agnew Gold Mine in resource-rich Western Australia state is a member of the mining union.

Up to 4,000 videos of "Harlem Shake" variations are uploaded on the Internet daily. The song "Harlem Shake," recorded by Brooklyn disc jockey and producer Baauer, is currently No.2 on the Australian singles chart.

Mine owner Barminco considered the stunt a safety issue and a breach of its "core values of safety, integrity and excellence," according to a dismissal letter cited by the paper.

The letter noted that Barminco would not allow the dancing workers "to be subcontracted by Barminco at any site domestically and globally."

It's not clear from the video what safety issues are raised. The dancing miners wear helmets, but five are shirtless. The sacked worker told the newspaper that shirts had been removed to ensure the Barminco name did not appear in the video.

Barminco, which has operations in Africa as well as its native Australia, did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday.

Report: Australian miners fired for 'Harlem Shake'

Monday, March 4, 2013

PERTH, Australia (AP) â€" Up to 15 miners were fired from their high-paying jobs in an Australian gold mine after a "Harlem Shake" performance underground was deemed a safety hazard, a newspaper reported on Monday.

A YouTube video shows eight miners wearing safety gear while performing the convulsive dance in the Agnew Gold Mine last week. The West Australian newspaper quoted a sacked worker who wouldn't give his name as saying up to 15 people were fired, including some who watched the performance but did not participate.

most welcome, sir balong.  i really love this story and i thought i should know more.

Reagan’s story inspired an outpouring of support on Facebook. Several people offered to buy him a bus pass in order to make it to his new job, but that won’t be necessary. After seeing the story on Fox59, a representative with IndyGo offered him a complimentary one year bus pass. (http://carnageandculture.blogspot.com/)

The farmers, through Gina S. Jarvina and Valentino Amador, et al, filed a complaint with the Office of the Ombudsman on September 2008. Despite follow-ups, nothing has been heard from the Ombudsman.

Now the man who purveyed their lands to the Bangko Sentral as foreclosed property due to non-payment of a 1.5 billion peso loan contracted for by his wife Cynthia, is running for president of the Philippines. And the poor farmers whose ancestors have continuously lived and cultivated the paltry lands of Norzagaray are deathly afraid that if Villar becomes president and his wife Cynthia becomes First Lady, they would lose their lands and their homes altogether.

-excerpts from Manny/Cynthia Villar vs. farmers of Bulacan, 23 February 2010, by Lito Banayo, from MALAYA; more at http://www.sulit.com.ph/index.php/view+topic/id/33978/manny/cynthia+villar+vs.+farmers+of+bulacan)
#24497
At one time, the farmers said, the Villar corporations sent security guards to drive them away from their land, but they resisted. This seems to be a pattern, as we shall see in other land disputes involving the Villars.

The farmers went from office to office, from the prosecutors office of Bulacan, as well as the DENR. They even went to the office of Senator Ping Lacson after they heard about the mysteries of the C-5 double appropriations. But Lacson’s Ethics Committee could not take cognizance of the letter-complaint of the farmers because then Sen. Pres. Manuel Villar was not yet a senator of the Republic at the time the complained offense was committed. He was yet a congressman, and later Speaker, and his wife Cynthia was not yet even a congresswoman at the time she signed the promissory notes to Bangko Sentral.

i'm far from being a nurse and such profession was never in my sights, but i won't vote for cynthia villar because, rightly or wrongly...

as the chair of the education committee cynthia villar opted to side with business rather than educational standards (and the threat of withholding CHED's funding if she didn't get her way; sadly, that's how congress exercises its power over the executive branch), there was also this almost-forgotten financial sleight-of-hand...

In fine, what the Villars, through Capitol/Optimum Bank and Manila Brickworks paid to the Bangko Sentral in partial settlement of their billion-peso loans, were FAKE titles! And aside form the BSP, which was clearly defrauded, victims now are the poor farmers of Norzagaray, who cannot have their titles reconstituted. If a farmer-family wants to obtain a loan so that they can send a son or daughter abroad to work as an OFW (Villar’s advertised beneficiaries of his generosity, for instance), they cannot do so, because the BSP also holds title to the same.

ooops, some say otherwise...

As CHEd chair, [Fr. Rolando V.] De la Rosa cracked down on substandard and fly-by-night nursing schools cashing in on the nursing-education boom. He resigned when he did not get the support of Congress and Malacañang.
