He employed a large number of Jewish workers in his factory, mainly due to the lower costs of employing Jews after the German invasion.

After witnessing a raid during the liquidation of the Krakow ghetto, Oskar Schindler was shocked to find many of his employees murdered and created his legendary list of 'Schindlerjuden' (Schindler's Jews) to be spared from deportation to work in his factory.

It was made possible thanks to his German-speaking Jewish accountant Itzhak Stern and Schindler's close relationships with high-ranking SS officers in Krakow.

In 1971, Schindler moved to live with friends at Goettingstrasse Nr. 30 in Hildesheim. Due to a heart complaint he was taken to the Saint Bernward Hospital in Hildesheim on 12 September 1974, where he died on 9 October 1974, at the age of 66. At the time of his death, he was surrounded by friends and family. He died penniless; the costs for his stay in the hospital were paid from social welfare of the city of Hildesheim. (wikipedia)

Oskar Schindler's final resting place

Schindler's grave is located on the mountainside below Zion Gate and the Old City walls. Stones placed on top of the grave are a sign of gratitude from Jewish visitors, according to Jewish tradition, although Schindler himself was not Jewish. On his grave, the Hebrew inscription reads: "Righteous among the Nations", an honorific used by the State of Israel to describe non-Jews who risked their lives during the Holocaust to save Jews from extermination by the Nazis. The German inscription reads: "The Unforgettable Lifesaver of 1200 Persecuted Jews". (wikipedia)

Mieczysław "Mietek" Pemper (24 March 1920 – 7 June 2011)

[Mietek Pemper] was assigned as the personal secretary and stenographer to Amon Göth {the notorious commandant of Płaszów, a Nazi labor and concentration camp in Poland) due to his previous work at the Kraków Ghetto's Judenrat.

Pemper's position as Göth's assistant gave him rare access to documents sent to Göth from Nazi authorities. By working in Göth's office, Pemper also became an acquaintance of Oskar Schindler, an ethnic German businessman and industrialist with ties to the black market. (wikipedia)

Many on the list were personal Jewish workers for Schindler with additional names added just before the transport. Those on the list, including Pemper himself, were transferred to Schindler's new grenade factory located in Bruennlitz, Czechoslovakia, in October 1944. This transfer ended up saving the lives of those who were put on the list.

Schindler also included Pemper's father, mother and brother on the list. Pemper's mother Regina didn't make it to the new factory in Bruennlitz, because of her illness; she was left behind in Auschwitz and later liberated when the war had ended. (wikipedia)
