From 1976 until 2005 Princess Lilian attended the annual Nobel Prize-giving ceremony, adorned in royal jewels and the Royal Order of the Seraphim, Sweden’s highest order of chivalry. At the age of 91 she discontinued this tradition, deciding that she was too old. (wikipedia)

Prince Bertil

Bertil never had to become regent since his father, the king (who ascended the throne in 1950), lived long enough to see his grandson, Carl Gustaf, come of age. Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden ascended the throne in 1973, and, having married a commoner himself, he approved Bertil's and Lilian's marriage. They were married on 7 December 1976 at the church of Drottningholm Palace in the presence of the king and the queen. (wikipedia)

In 1943 she met the Swedish Prince Bertil, Duke of Halland, in London, reportedly at a cocktail party for her 28th birthday. Soon after their meeting they became lovers, although she was at that time married to her first husband, whom she divorced two years later in 1945. By the time she and Bertil became involved, Lilian and Ivan Craig were separated. When the couple were reunited after the war, Craig expressed his wish to marry another woman; an amicable divorce followed on 7 November 1947.

Bertil's older brother, Prince Gustaf Adolf, Duke of Västerbotten, was second-in-line to the Swedish throne, but in 1947 he died. As Gustaf Adolf's son, Carl Gustaf, was less than one year old, it seemed likely that when the king and the crown prince died Bertil would have to serve as regent (other heirs having given up their places in the succession because of unacceptable marriages). For this reason Bertil chose not to marry Lilian, so the couple simply lived together discreetly for more than 30 years. In 1946 Prince Bertil acquired a house in Sainte-Maxime, France, that became their private retreat. (wikipedia)

Lillian May Davies was born on 30 August 1915, in Swansea, South Wales, the daughter of William John Davies and his wife Gladys Mary (née Curran). She dropped one 'l' from her first name when she became a fashion model. She was seen in fashion magazines like Vogue. Her parents separated in the 1920s, but they did not divorce formally until 1939.

In 1940 she married Scottish actor Ivan Craig (1912â€"1998) in Horsham, West Sussex. Shortly after their wedding, Craig joined the British Army and left for Africa, where he served during World War II. In his absence, Lilian worked at a factory that made radios for the Royal Navy and at a hospital for wounded soldiers. (wikipedia)

as for st. francis of assisi--

St. Francis of Assisi (Italian: San Francesco d'Assisi, baptized Giovanni, born Francesco di Pietro di Bernardone;[2] 1181/1182 â€" October 3, 1226) was an Italian Catholic friar and preacher. He founded the men's Franciscan Order, the women’s Order of St. Clare, and the Third Order of Saint Francis for men and women not able to live the lives of itinerant preachers followed by the early members of the Order of Friars Minor or the monastic lives of the Poor Clares. Though he was never ordained to the Catholic priesthood, Francis is one of the most venerated religious figures in history. (wikipedia)

St. Francis Xavier, born Francisco de Jasso y Azpilicueta (7 April 1506 â€" 3 December 1552) was a Roman Catholic missionary born in Xavier, Kingdom of Navarre (now part of Spain), and co-founder of the Society of Jesus. He was a student of Ignatius of Loyola and one of the first seven Jesuits, dedicated at Montmartre in 1534. He led an extensive mission into Asia, mainly in the Portuguese Empire of the time. He was influential in the spreading and upkeep of Catholicism most notably in India, but also ventured into Japan, Borneo, the Moluccas, and other areas which had thus far not been visited by Christian missionaries. In these areas, being a pioneer and struggling to learn the local languages in the face of opposition, he had less success than he had enjoyed in India. (wikipedia)

Koko mulls libel case vs Migz for claiming that he's a wife-beater

By: Lira Dalangin-Fernandez, InterAksyon.com
March 16, 2013 4:06 PM

MANAOAG, Pangasinan - Reelectionist Senator Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel III on Saturday said that he had asked his lawyers to study the possibility of filing a libel case against fellow senatorial bet Juan Miguel "Migz" Zubiri over the latter's statement on television that Pimentel was a wife-beater.

"My lawyers are studying possible libel, we will discuss the draft complaint when I go back to Manila," Pimentel told reporters in an interview here.

Zubiri made the remarks in a face-off with Pimentel in a television talk show. Zubiri claimed that Pimentel's wife, Jewel May Lobaton-Pimentel, who is Zubiri's distant cousin, confessed to him that she was being beaten up by her husband. "His estranged wife is my cousin and she herself confided to me that she is a battered wife."

On Friday, Jewel issued a letter denying Zubiri's statement.

Pimentel has been engaged in a word war the past few days with Zubiri, a candidate of the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA), whom Pimentel accused of misrepresenting his achievements in Bukidnon, where the Zubiris are among the most established political families.

Zubiri had served as senator for four years, then resigned with two years left in his term, shortly before the Senate Electoral Tribunal ruled Pimentel was a victim of poll fraud and should have taken the seat that Zubiri occupied for two-thirds of the usual six-year term.

Koko's Jewel refutes Migz: I was never a battered wife

MANILA, Philippines â€" I was never a battered wife. Leave me out of your political campaign. This was the message sent Friday by the wife of reelectionist Sen. Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III, Jewel May Lobaton-Pimentel, as she refuted Migz Zubiri’s claim that she was a battered wife.

“I categorically state that I have never claimed nor complained to Migz Zubiri that I was a battered wife. In the close to twelve years that we lived together, my husband Koko Pimentel has never ever physically hurt me,” Lobaton-Pimentel said in a statement released by the media office of Team PNoy, the LP-led coalition where the senator is seeking reelection.

“For the best interest of my children, please keep my marital issues out of the campaign issues for a Senate seat this 2013 elections. My marital issues are not national issues. And my children have been greatly affected. Please spare my two sons, as they are mere children aged 8 and 3 years old respectively,” Lobaton-Pimentel said.

vatican tourists photo ops

next to impossible man gyod intawon nga makapa-picture ang tourist with the pope gawas kun cardinal ka or visiting head of state, aw, there's always the swiss guard.

It has also increasingly come to serve a public relations role of sorts: today, the brightly uniformed guards represent a historic tourist attraction in and of themselves, and are the most visible representatives of the Vatican on a day to day level. (http://romaistanbul2010.blogspot.com/)

#24131
pa-clown-clown ra na silag sinena, but they're really badasses.  in real dire situations, one's best defense against them is speed in flight of foot.  wa na lang sa maka-tetanus nang ilang weapon nga partisan.

Today, the Swiss Guard is in every respect a world class security force, akin less to an army than to the United States Secret Service â€" they operate behind the scenes as well as filling their more public roles, accompanying the pope and patrolling his palace in plain clothes. Supplementing their traditional halberds and swords is the weaponry of the modern Swiss Army, “such as the H&K submachine gun and the SIG Sauer 9 mm pistol;” Guards “also train at close-quarters fighting… tactical movement… security and counter-terrorism techniques.” While their modern guns and specialized training are not visible to the eye of the tourist, they are readily available to the Guards at all times should they have the need to employ them. The Philippines recognize the One China Policy but has relations to the Republic of China through the Manila Economic and Cultural Office in Taipei and Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Manila. Both offices were established in 1975 and were organized as non-profit and non-stock private corporations.

The Republic of China has non-diplomatic, unofficial relations with the European Union and at least 47 states, recognizing the People's Republic of China, that maintain "Economic, Trade and/or Cultural" (or similar) offices in Taiwan. These relations are not inter-Governmental nor are they officially diplomatic or political. However, they ultimately do function as de facto 'embassies', including the processing of visas, cultural exchanges and to some extent, unofficial diplomatic and governmental exchanges.

the philippines ended its diplomatic relations with the ROC in 1975.

Earlier, in October 1971, Resolution 2758 was passed by the UN General Assembly... declaring that

"the representatives of the Government of the People's Republic of China (PRC)are the only lawful representatives of China to the United Nations" and thus do not regard the Republic of China (ROC) as legitimately representing the whole of China. (wikipedia)

an aside--

People Republic of China (PRC) is mainland China or Communist China or Red China

Republic of China (ROC) is Taiwan and regarded by the PROC only as a breakaway province

As of 2011, 22 UN member states and the Holy See officially recognize the Republic of China, as the PRC makes breaking ties with the ROC and recognizing the PRC as the sole legitimate government of China (including Taiwan) the prerequisite to establishing diplomatic relations with the PRC. The association told Reuters it had no immediate reaction to the pope's election. Joseph Kung, president of the Cardinal Kung Foundation in the United States which advocates religious freedom for Catholics in China, said the new pope would likely be unable to mend fences.

"The Chinese government wants to do something contrary to the basic dogma of the church," he said by phone. "No pope can ever change it until the Chinese government wakes up."

Catholics prayed inside Beijing's sanctioned East Catholic Church on Thursday. Images of the pope were displayed on large screens lining the central isle under an ornate vaulted ceiling.

"It is normal that religion is not accepted in an atheist country, but we Christians believe in Jesus," said Chen Jingshuang, who works at a cigarette factory in Beijing.

"We worship God directly."

China's constitution enshrines freedom of religion, but stability-obsessed leaders in the officially atheist government are wary of the appeal of a higher moral power.

The Vatican has previously condemned what it called "external pressures and constrictions" on Chinese Catholics, and the government has detained Vatican-appointed bishops who split from the Catholic Patriotic Association.

Chinese Bishop Thaddeus Ma Daqin, ordained by the Vatican, has been held under house arrest at the Sheshan seminary in Shanghai since July after he announced that he was leaving the association.

The Vatican had refused to recognize China's ordination to the state-run Church of Reverend Joseph Yue Fusheng, complaining he had not been blessed by the pope.

Catholic activists say other bishops have gone missing or have to contend with house arrest and surveillance.

Taiwan, for its part, said it believed its religious, academic and cultural partnership with the Vatican would deepen under the new pope.

Hua's comments reasserted China's stance that the Vatican and Pope Francis of Argentina, elected on Wednesday as the first non-European pontiff in nearly 1,300 years, would have to make the first move.

Former Pope Benedict, the first pontiff in hundreds of years to step down, had encouraged reconciliation between the two sides of the divided Chinese church and engaged in a low-key dialogue with Beijing about political ties.

"We are sincere in wanting to improve relations," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told reporters, offering congratulations to Pope Francis.

But the Vatican "must stop interfering in China's internal affairs, including in the name of religion", Hua said, adding that the Holy See must end diplomatic recognition of Taiwan.

"We hope that the Catholic Church, under the leadership of the new pope, can work hard together with China and create beneficial conditions for improving relations," she said.

China urges Vatican to drop Taiwan ties day after pope elected

By Ben Blanchard and Michael Martina
BEIJING | Thu Mar 14, 2013 5:55am EDT

(Reuters) - China hopes for improved ties with the Roman Catholic Church, it said on Thursday, a day after the election of the new pope, but it stressed the Vatican must take the initiative and end diplomatic relations with Taiwan.

China's 8-12 million Catholics are divided between the Communist Party-run Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association, that has installed bishops without Vatican approval, and an underground church, whose members meet in private, wary of state control.

China severed diplomatic relations with the Vatican shortly after the Communists took power in 1949 and has since demanded that it cut ties with self-ruled Taiwan, which Beijing considers a breakaway province.

precursors of the swiss guard uniform, as painted:

#24147
why is their uniform "that way"?  (an american online commenter's words: "in america, it's called a clown.")

The official dress uniform is of blue, red, orange and yellow with a distinctly Renaissance appearance. Commandant Jules Repond (1910â€"1921) created the current uniforms in 1914.

While both Michelangelo and a painting of the Pontifical Swiss Guard bearing Pope Julius II on a litter (by Raphael) are often cited as inspiration for the Pontifical Swiss Guard uniform, the actual uniforms worn by those soldiers are of the style which appears by today's standards as a large skirt, a common style in uniforms during the Renaissance.

A very clear expression of the modern Pontifical Swiss Guard uniform can be seen in a 1577 fresco by Jacopo Coppi of the Empress Eudoxia conversing with Pope Sixtus III. It is clearly the precursor of today's recognizable three-colored uniform... (wikipedia)

Perhaps due to these rigorous requirements, sources indicate that the Guard has faced a degree of difficulty in filling their ranks in recent years, and recruitment efforts have been stepped up across Switzerland to ensure the ongoing survival of this elite military force.

One guard in the late 1990s, asked whether or not he enjoyed his post, simply replied "Not really. We have a midnight curfew, and if you want to go to discotheques or pick up girls, it's not great,” a statement which clearly points to shifting social and cultural values as factors in the increasing difficulty of recruitment. The Swiss Guard’s unique status as both a fully functional security force and a ceremonial, historic military unit is reflected in its entrance requirements.

In addition to more standard items such as completion of basic Swiss military training and service and an age of under 30 years, the entry requirements currently posted on the Guard’s website also include items such as Catholic faith, Swiss nationality, “irreproachable reputation,” and celibacy until the age of 25, then only to be abandoned by those having achieved the rank of Corporal. #24152
Qualified candidates must apply to serve. If accepted, new guards are sworn on May 6 every year in the San Damaso Courtyard (Italian: Cortile di San Damaso) in the Vatican (May 6 is the anniversary of the Sack of Rome). The chaplain of the guard reads aloud the oath in the language of the guard (mostly German, but there are Italian, French and English versions of the oath):

(English version) "I swear I will faithfully, loyally and honourably serve the Supreme Pontiff [name of actual Pope] and his legitimate successors, and also dedicate myself to them with all my strength, sacrificing if necessary also my life to defend them. I assume this same commitment with regard to the Sacred College of Cardinals whenever the See is vacant. Furthermore I promise to the Commanding Captain and my other superiors, respect, fidelity and obedience. This I swear! May God and our Holy Patrons assist me!"

When his name is called, each new guard approaches the Pontifical Swiss Guard's flag, grasping the banner in his left hand. He raises his right hand with his thumb, index, and middle finger extended along three axes, a gesture that symbolizes the Holy Trinity, and speaks:

(English version) "I, [name of the new guard], swear diligently and faithfully to abide by all that has just been read out to me, so grant me God and so help me his Saints."

Recruitment

Recruits to the guards must be Catholic, single males with Swiss citizenship who have completed basic training with the Swiss military and can obtain certificates of good conduct.

Recruits must have a professional degree or high school diploma and must be between 19 and 30 years of age and at least 174 cm (5 ft, 8.5 in) tall.

In 2009, the Pontifical Swiss Guard commandant, Daniel Anrig, suggested that the Guard might someday be open to recruiting women, but he added that the admission of female recruits remained far in the future.

The tailors of the uniforms work inside the Pontifical Swiss Guard barracks and tailor-make the uniform for each guardsman individually. The uniform weighs 8 pounds (3.6 kg), and may be the heaviest uniform in use by any standing army today. The Renaissance style makes them one of the most complicated to construct. A single uniform requires 154 pieces and takes nearly 32 hours and 3 fittings to complete. (wikipedia)
