Being Children of God

23 Before the coming of this faith, we were held in custody under the law, locked up until the faith that was to come would be revealed. 24 So the law was our guardian until Christ came that we might be justified by faith. 25 Now that this faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian.

26 So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, 27 for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

The Law and the Promise

15 Brothers and sisters, let me take an example from everyday life. Just as no one can set aside or add to a human covenant that has been duly established, so it is in this case. 16 The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. Scripture does not say “and to seeds,” meaning many people, but “and to your seed,” meaning one person, who is Christ. 17 What I mean is this: The law, introduced 430 years later, does not set aside the covenant previously established by God and thus do away with the promise. 18 For if the inheritance depends on the law, then it no longer depends on the promise; but God in his grace gave it to Abraham through a promise.

19 Why, then, was the law given at all? It was added because of transgressions until the Seed to whom the promise referred had come. The law was given through angels and entrusted to a mediator. 20 A mediator, however, implies more than one party; but God is one.

21 Is the law, therefore, opposed to the promises of God? Absolutely not! For if a law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness would certainly have come by the law. 22 But Scripture has locked up everything under the control of sin, so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe.

-Galatians 3: 15-22

Learn English Online / Colloquialisms
March 06, 2011, 04:54:04 PM
colloquialism is a phrase that is common in everyday, unconstrained conversation, rather than in formal speech, academic writing, or paralinguistics.Dictionaries often display colloquial words and phrases with the abbreviation colloq. as an identifier. Colloquialisms are also sometimes referred to collectively as "colloquial language".

1. characteristic of or appropriate to ordinary or familiar conversation rather than formal speech or writing; informal. 2. involving or using conversation.

Some examples of informal colloquialisms can include words (such as "y'all" or "gonna" or "wanna"), phrases (such as "old as the hills" and "graveyard dead"), or sometimes even an entire aphorism ("There's more than one way to skin a cat").

"Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:
For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.”

Book Reviews / The History of Love: A Novel
March 06, 2011, 04:26:58 PM
The History of Love is a novel in the form of a homage to things lost, as well as to unsolved mysteries. The novel within the novel, also named The History of Love is the basis for all these questions.

Leo Gursky is an old man who feels as though he is disappearing. He tries at all costs to draw attention to himself, but he still feels he has a void in his life. Eventually, he goes on a quest to find his long-lost son and the novel that he wrote as a young man, now published in Chile under the name of Zvi Litvinoff. Alma Singer is a teenage girl who is trying to keep her family together after the loss of her father. Named after the heroine of The History of Love, Alma tries to console her widowed mother (who has recently been requested to translate the novel from Spanish) as well as keep her younger brother Bird (who believes he is a lamed vovnik) from becoming a social pariah.

The main characters are: Leo Gursky, Alma Singer, Bird Singer, Zvi Litvinoff, Bruno, Isaac Moritz, Alma Mereminksi, Misha.

History / Re: Chinese Emperor Qin Shi Huang
March 06, 2011, 03:13:44 PM
Qin Shi Huang was born in the Chinese month zhÄ"ng (æ£), the first month of the year in the Chinese calendar then in use, and so he received the name Zheng (æ"¿), both characters being used interchangeably in ancient China. In Chinese antiquity, people never joined family names and given names together as is customary today, so it is anachronistic to refer to Qin Shi Huang as "Ying Zheng". The given name was never used except by close relatives, therefore it is also incorrect to refer to the young Qin Shi Huang as "Prince Zheng", or as "King Zheng of Qin". As a king, he was referred to as "King of Qin" only. Had he received a posthumous name after his death like his father, he would have been known by historians as "King NN. (posthumous name) of Qin", but this never happened.

After conquering the last independent Chinese state in 221 BC, Qin Shi Huang was the king of a state of Qin ruling over the whole of China, an unprecedented accomplishment. Wishing to show that he was no longer a simple king like the kings of old during the Warring States Period, he created a new title, huangdi (皇帝), combining the word huang (皇) from the legendary Three Huang (Three August Ones) who ruled at the dawn of Chinese history, and the word di (帝) from the legendary Five Di (Five Sovereigns) who ruled immediately after the Three Huang. These Three Huang and Five Di were considered perfect rulers, of immense power and very long lives. The word huang also meant "big", "great". The word di also referred to the Supreme God in Heaven, creator of the world. Thus, by joining these two words for the first time, Qin Shi Huang created a title on a par with his feat of uniting the seemingly endless Chinese realm, in fact uniting the world. Ancient Chinese, like ancient Romans, believed their empire encompassed the whole world, a concept referred to as all under heaven.

This word huangdi is rendered in most Western languages as "emperor", a word which also has a long history dating back to ancient Rome, and which Europeans deem superior to the word "king". Qin Shi Huang adopted the name First Emperor (Shi Huangdi, literally "commencing emperor"). He abolished posthumous names, by which former kings were known after their death, judging them inappropriate and contrary to filial piety, and decided that future generations would refer to him as the First Emperor (Shi Huangdi). His successor would be referred to as the Second Emperor (Er Shi Huangdi, literally "second generation emperor"), the successor of his successor as the Third Emperor (San Shi Huangdi, literally "third generation emperor"), and so on, for ten thousand generations, as the Imperial house was supposed to rule China for ten thousand generations. "ten thousand" is equivalent to "forever" in Chinese, and it also signifies "good fortune".

Qin Shi Huang had now become the First Emperor of the State of Qin. The official name of the newly united China was still "State of Qin", as Qin had absorbed all the other states. The names Zhonghua (中華) or Zhongguo (中國) were never used officially for the country of China until 1912 when the Republic of China (中華æ°'國) was founded. Contemporaries called the emperor "First Emperor", dropping the phrase "of the State of Qin", which was obvious without saying. However, soon after the emperor's death, his regime collapsed, and China was beset by a civil war. Eventually, in 202 BC the Han Dynasty managed to reunify the whole of China, which now became officially known as the State of Han (漢國), or Empire of Han. Qin Shi Huang could no longer be called "First Emperor", as this would imply that he was the "First Emperor of the Empire of Han". The custom thus arose of preceding his name with Qin (秦), which no longer referred to the State of Qin, but to the Qin Dynasty, a dynasty replaced by the Han Dynasty. The word huangdi (emperor) in his name was also shortened to huang, so that he became known as Qin Shi Huang. It seems likely that huangdi was shortened to obtain a three-character name, because it is rare for Chinese people to have a name composed of four or more characters.

This name Qin Shi Huang (i.e., "First Emperor of the Qin Dynasty") is the name that appears in the Records of the Grand Historian written by Sima Qian, and is the name most favored today inside China when referring to the First Emperor. Westerners sometimes write "Qin Shi Huangdi", which is improper given Chinese naming conventions; it is more conventional to write "Qin Shi Huang" or "First Emperor".

Sir Calle,

If this is true, then there should be no pointing of fingers. From what I hear, it is apparently 'part' of the political processes to bribe the people. Running and opposition parties in any town in the Philippines do this. In defense lang sa former opposition group.

I wish that there will be a time that there will no longer be 'vote buying' in Philippine Politics.

I'm hard put to imagine anything racist or pejorative about the sound of crashing ceramic utensils. In fact, as far as I know it's a sign of good luck.

In America, some closed minded white Americans will joke around with Chinese Americans and ask them, "How did you get your name? Did your parents drop glassware on the floor and decide on a name because of the sound?"

It is referring to the foreign sounding Chinese names as compared to the typical "John, Mark, David, Sam, etc.

Believe me, to the Chinese and Asian-Americans who are asked these questions just because their names sounds 'different', it is a racist / ignorant statement.

Mr. Lorenzo:  So many mansions (Built and paid for by OFW's)  Not local employees.

The New Pablo O. Lim Memorial Astrodome was Number One: -  really not needed, we had a perfectly adequate community center. and Number Two: - financed by our former mayor and now Lt. Governor who pawned Badian Springs.  If the town defaults on the loan, you will have to go to Panglao to swim.

The restored Dome and interior of the Holy Infant Church, and the stained glass windows were paid for by US, Manila, Davao, Cebu, Saudi, UK, and USA balikbayans.  (There are plaques at the entrance to the church)  The LGU had nothing to do with this work.

I think the reason you do not see any negatives is because you have not spent any time here.

1. Yes, indeed, so many mansions. Ofws or not, they are still Valencianhons who send money back to Valencia , and in return the town benefits. Don't be so closed minded to think that just because they're 'OFWs' that makes them automatically outside the sphere of Valencia and the Valencianhon people.

Ako, i was born in Valencia, but raised in America. You might consider me 'OFW' but I do not consider myself an OFW, but a pure-blooded Valencianhon. ;)

2. The Pablo Lim Astrodome looks good. I don't know who designed it, but one thing is clear that it was named after the late Mayor Pablo Lim , who was also a very good friend of my late grandmother. Why so antagonistic against projects that are built to develop the infrastructure of the town? From what I was told (by former mayors and from political folks there in Valencia, the dome functions during formal ceremonies and during town festivals and events). Is there a possibility of expanding the astrodome?

3. Have you been to Badiang Springs? Its filled to the brim. I was there and visited few times and everytime it was filled to full capacity. I really don't think it will be taken away nor will the Valencianhon people have to drive to Panglao to swim. LoL.

Badiang Springs/ pool has been there since i can remember. Since as far back as i can remember, the pool has always been there. And considering the high rate of tourists/ visitors to the site, there is steady income. I'm sure the loan will be paid. And considering the Lt. Governor of Bohol is Dr. Concepcion Lim, i really doubt they will be doing anything to forfeit the Badiang Spring/ Pool.

4. Whether or not the new dome of the Church was funded by the OFWs or 'home' Valencianhons, they're still Valencianhons. ;D
Awww diba? We loose the right to take responsibility and to help out our beloved town just because we leave our Pinanggang Yutang na tawhan, diay?? You're telling me that just because USA Balikbayans donate something to the town, that they are separate entity aside from the town?

Mac, there is a community here in USA called the Valencianhon Assocation of the East Coast, which is composed of some 30-40 families and we donate and pool in money to help what we can for our town. Let alone celebrate the Fiesta of our town in the honor of Senyor Santo Nino EVERY year. So even tho we are not in Valencia, we celebrate in SPIRIT with our families and our friends back home in VALENCIA.

God Bless you, Mac! Viva Valencia! Viva Senyor Santo Nino!

sitting by the bridge on the corner of North Broadway idle
waiting, asking, begging,
pennies, quarters, nickle and dime
do you have some ?

hundreds of cars, presuming eyes with condescension
all for the sake of a dollar here and a dollar there
please help me, please help a needy soul
the request comes on deaf ears

the cold air surrounding deafens the frustration
where will i sleep tonight

life is hard, life is merciless, life is a struggle

Chinese names are beautiful and much more appreciated when written in the ancient Chinese calligraphy.

My great grandfather, who is 100% pure Han Chinese, used to teach my grandmother how to write in calligraphy.

I can remember in my youth my lola writing my name in Chinese calligraphy and would read me my Chinese-name.

Theirs (Chinese) is an ancient way. Remember that Chinese culture is over 5,000 years old.

Philippines as a country is only 60 some years old. The concept of 'Filipino' 'Filipinas' came into existence in 1565 when the Spaniards created it.

Hence, as a collective identity, we are only 400 some years old.

The Chinese have been a civilization and have been a collective identity, a race for over 5 millenia.

Before the Jews were even a civilization and practiced Judaism, the Chinese were already there.

Please be considerate of their culture and not insensitive to it.
#24172

In the Chinese (Han) way, the family surname comes first and then the given name comes later.

For example: Lee Yu Fang ; Lee is the family name, and the given name is Yu Fang.

Yu Fang is a beautiful feminine name.

Hence, Lee Yu Fang is a girl's name; in western (Romanized) version, it would be: Yu Fang Lee.

There in the shores of palau
sits an old sage lonely
sighing with a laugh
a fool in his own shadow

The loneliness of this sage
beckons insults to come
hurling it onto innocents
to remedy his torture.

Quiet and two faced apparel covering her so
swimming with fishes to pose for convergence,
receiving compliments from an old fool,
ah, the masquerade of these buffoons.

Eloquence?

Feigning it so , yet failing to achieve ever constantly.
Like poor men having wine tastes with beer pockets.
As pathetic as the caroling of drunkards on Christmas eve,
As redundant as the clamoring of a fading bald cymbal.

Ah, the constancy, the inevitability of two faces.

Poems and Poets / Oh little lady
March 05, 2011, 09:53:29 PM
How are you doing now little lady?
its been months since we last exchanged words
there have been empty letters
empty covers, unwritten coverheads
full pens, uncapped still.

How are your lips these days?
i wonder if they are as red
like the lava of raging volcanoes
are they cold as Tagaytay on winter nights
or as fiery hot as Bonaire on July days.

The trick to knowing two faced individuals is that you really don't know when they're showing their real face.

March 05, 2011, 04:52:44 AM
Appearing on New York experiences
So quick to denounce
Appreciating others' flaws so she can correct

Bit wait a moment my sweat little dear
Why so protective, defensive when you're not clear
Popping balloons are a hobby for you so
Long as it's not yours?

Invoke your little passions if necessary
They do entertain, over and over again.

Come, take off your mask.

He comes
He leaves
He laughs
He condescends
He demands
He curses
He laughs

He projects
He denies
He adores
He conceals
He yearns
He eats

He angers
He toils
He sleeps
He oils

He talks
He confesses
His solemn walks

His chatter
His calling
His wicked jokes
His momentous release

His silence
His reading
His nonchalance
His hurting heart
His yearning
His many regrets
His wishing to change
His inevitability .

His sigh hidden in a devilish smile.

The sage.

Oh senior nano na suko
Pa man ka gihapon
Di ba ma sakitan ka sa grudge
Sa imohang kasing kasing

Relasyon.

Naa ba ka?
Sigoro naa sigoro wala
Pero ang importanteng mensahe
Ay kini: ug makasa ka, pag angyo
Pood sa pasaylo.

Diba mag pasaylo man ang baba sa asawa
Pariho rapood sa bata sa ijang ginikanan
Baga ra sigoro imohang kasingkasing
Hypertrophied na.

Mag ampo ko para nimo.

I never knew Japan was a Maoist country. Certainly it did not enjoy the effects of the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Perhaps you are referring to Confucian culture?

Any case, Thailand is not Maoist because the country is still a hereditary monarchy, the antithesis of Maoist Communism. Communism in Thailand was crushed during the 80's.

sitting in catatonic gaze with arms outstretched
for hours like a centipede in open plain
basking in the sun.
but it is not the sun that you bask in, patient,
but the sound of nurses' feet, doctors' white coats fluttering,

what do you hear in that head of yours, when you show no slight emotional recoil
no sound, no reaction to even the simplest of commands.
you are alive, machines record your blood pressure,
stethoscopes actualize breath, heart, abdominal sounds,
yet you do not react.

as i come visit you from time to time, check up on you, your charts still reads the same.
: Catatonic Typal Schizophrenia.

what goes on in your mind, patient in room 157, bed 2?

Poems and Poets / the poisonous flower
March 05, 2011, 01:29:12 AM
amongst the daffodils, the lilies, plenitude of perennials , lies a lone flower.
a black rose
unlike other roses this one has no thorn, no outward defense.

beware, ye who would fall into folly to such a black rose.
for tho no outward defense , the smallest sniff from its petals,
shall cause immobility and death.

there is poison in even the most softest, delicate-looking flowers.

Poems and Poets / such an ostentatious fellow
March 05, 2011, 01:09:21 AM

library

sitting on the desk upstairs secluded from the rest
a man heavily coated, a whimsical fellow, flamboyant in attire and mannerism
sitting on an English colonial chair, legs crossed reading his book, fiction

as i extract my caramel macchiato  his eyes fix on mine
ambivalence on his stare until it was obvious, the coldness of the stare
sending a chill up my spine.

why did he stare? what was the purpose of such intrigue?

prepared to leave, finishing the drink, as i walk to my escape,
he gets up and tries to start a conversation.
in disgust, i evade, and briskly walk away.
