How true are Chinese names taken from the sound effects of a crashing ceramic utensils ?

like crashing plates, potteries etc....

names like, Yao Ming, Teong Hua, Po Ken Mon, Kim Tong, Ma Mon Luk, etc....

There are Chinese-Filipinos here who find this rather racist and offensive.

In the Chinese (Han) way, the family surname comes first and then the given name comes later.

For example: Lee Yu Fang ; Lee is the family name, and the given name is Yu Fang.

Yu Fang is a beautiful feminine name.

Hence, Lee Yu Fang is a girl's name; in western (Romanized) version, it would be: Yu Fang Lee.

Chinese names are beautiful and much more appreciated when written in the ancient Chinese calligraphy.

My great grandfather, who is 100% pure Han Chinese, used to teach my grandmother how to write in calligraphy.

I can remember in my youth my lola writing my name in Chinese calligraphy and would read me my Chinese-name.

Theirs (Chinese) is an ancient way. Remember that Chinese culture is over 5,000 years old.

Philippines as a country is only 60 some years old. The concept of 'Filipino' 'Filipinas' came into existence in 1565 when the Spaniards created it.

Hence, as a collective identity, we are only 400 some years old.

The Chinese have been a civilization and have been a collective identity, a race for over 5 millenia.

Before the Jews were even a civilization and practiced Judaism, the Chinese were already there.

Please be considerate of their culture and not insensitive to it.

In America, some closed minded white Americans will joke around with Chinese Americans and ask them, "How did you get your name? Did your parents drop glassware on the floor and decide on a name because of the sound?"

It is referring to the foreign sounding Chinese names as compared to the typical "John, Mark, David, Sam, etc.

Believe me, to the Chinese and Asian-Americans who are asked these questions just because their names sounds 'different', it is a racist / ignorant statement.

ps. early christians, and from christian art, most of all the old testament prophets and even jesus christ was depicted as having a beard.
