The death toll from a fire early Sunday in a crowded nightclub in southern Brazil has climbed to 245, and hundreds of others were injured, local television reports said.

Reports quoted police sources as saying the death toll from the "Kiss" nightclub fire in Santa Maria could rise again as an investigation of the blaze continues.

There was a party for college students in the nightclub when the fire started, according to local reports. At around 2:30 a.m. (0430 GMT), a band member performing on stage reportedly lit fireworks that apparently caused the fire.

The fire developed very fast, with the room quickly filling with black smoke. There was only one exit for the nightclub, causing some trampling as partgoers tried to escape.

Mayor Gerson da Rosa Ferreira said the deaths were caused by asphyxiation or trampling and that 500 people were in the nightclub when the fire broke out.

Reports said the nightclub, which can hold 2,000 people, was popular among local youths and college students.

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, who was attending a summit between the 27-member European Union and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States in Chile, interrupted her visit to return home.

Rousseff telephoned Rio Grande do Sul Governor Tarso Genro on Sunday morning, offering federal aid to the tragedy at the nightclub.

Health and Food / Ugly Truth About Bottled Water
January 25, 2013, 08:12:05 AM
FACT : While the results of tap water contamination tests are made public, manufacturers of bottled water do not divulge their test results. Chalk it up to the protection of trade secrets. Every brand of bottled water has its own proprietary blend of pathogens, contaminants, and waste that give the product its uniquely refreshing taste.

The U.S. Defense Department has decided to abolish a 1994 rule excluding women from combat, opening hundreds of thousands of frontline jobs to servicewomen, reported the American Forces Press Service, Pentagon's information wing, on Wednesday.

The report quoted a senior defense official as saying that Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, are expected to announce the lifting of the direct combat ban on women in the military. But it provided no further details and did not reveal when the announcement might take place.

The policy change, which overturns a 1994 rule prohibiting women from being assigned to direct ground combat positions, will begin a process in which U.S. military services develop plans to implement the decision, the official said.

The move will expand the Pentagon's action last February to partially lift the ban, which opened up about 14,500 Army positions to women. The move last year opened positions such as tank mechanic and field artillery radar operator, which previously closed to women.

The decision to completely overturn the ban would open more than 230,000 jobs -- many in Army and Marine infantry units -- to women.

By Bohol Chronicle

Loboc Mayor Leon Calipusan came out somewhat  of a hero after backing out from the congressional race where he could have clashed against the incumbent, Rep. Arthur Yap, on May 13.

Calipusan drew admiration from fellow mayors in 3rd district and saved the harmony among 3rd district leaders. A few others were dismayed.

Calipusan filed his affidavit of withdrawal from the May 13 elections at the provincial Comelec office at 2:50 p.m. on January 9, indicating personal, family and health reasons.

In his official statement, Calipusan pointed out that it was not for pride and power that he supposedly wanted to be elected as congressman of third district, but to introduce reform.

Calipusan also made it clear that his main purpose of running for congressman was to support President Aquino's advocacy against corruption based on the slogan, “Daang Matuwid”, which he claimed he had implemented in his town.

He also admitted he has no enough funds and resources to match what he believes Yap has.
Calipusan takes pride in having accomplished as mayor of Loboc that earned him the nomination of the ruling Liberal Party.

However, he expressed disappointment that his supposed partymates had forsaken him and prefer to support Yap instead.

The mayor of Loboc said most of the mayors in 3rd district who run under LP did not recognize his nomination as the official candidate of LP and lamented that those in the higher positions in the party did nothing about this.

Calipusan pointed out that efforts to achieve effective reforms would be futile if politics of convenience through money is tolerated.

Happiness in Its Entirety - Only You Can Judge You

Being happy is a state of mind that only you can answer. What makes you happy may be something totally different than what makes someone else happy. Living life to achieve happiness is a happy median that ultimately makes you a much healthier person. The conscious and subconscious acts that you do is what defines you as a person, as only you can dictate what these are. Follow your heart, as passion is something that has to come from within, and always remember; "Only you can judge you."

The Body Heals Quickly - Why Doesn't the Mind?

Happiness Gained Through Enjoying the Journey

From a very young age we are taught to aim high, look to the future and wait for happiness to arrive after we have achieved our goals. The consequence of thinking like this is that happiness is only ever short lived. When we reach these goals we are not taught the skills of appreciating and enjoying the pleasure of this success. Being future goal driven, we soon forget the success we achieve (or forget the enjoyment we felt after achieving the goal). Our kinds soon focus on the next thing we need to achieve in order to be happy. Then term "I'll be happy when... " Becomes all too familiar.

When Bad Things Happen to Good People

If something bad happens to you, did you create or attract it? Proponents of the Law of Attraction would have you believe so. I disagree. There are too many examples of bad things happening to good people in our world today. Large scale disasters that no one deserves. Rather than focusing on trying to understand what we did to attract what has happened to us, here's another perspective I believe is much more productive.

Happiness Is a Solo Thing

You are the master of your own domain. Happiness is found within. No one or nothing can actually make you happy. Depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain that make some feel sad constantly while others can overcome this imbalance and still be productive. Happiness works in a similar way. It is not because of a new job. or new car. or new house that your level of happiness will increase drastically. If you are prone to being a happy person, none of these new changes in your life will make you happier than what you are already. The same goes for the ones that are unhappy. Maybe your level of unhappiness might change because of these new acquisitions, but might go back to being unhappy shortly right after. Its a innate feeling, not acquired.

Open Minds And Forgiving Hearts Create Happiness

It often appears that most of mankind is in a never - ending quest for true happiness. However, although they state that they seek happiness, few ever do what's necessary, take the necessary steps or action, or help themselves become really happy. All too often, the biggest enemy and obstacle to our happiness is ourselves, because many of us end up blaming others, resenting other people and their successes, or simply entering all circumstances in a judgmental manner, often adopting the my way or the highway philosophy. On the other hand, truly happy people are those with open minds, that forgive others for perceived as well as real transgressions.
