March 22, 2009, 12:38:46 AM
I was told by Cebu-based Atty. Jane Carabuena - Paredes of Smart Communications that her company will construct a much better viewing deck on the lake.  Wow! Mangadto na jud ta ana didto. After sa beach, mangadto ta sa lake, mag bird watching.
#2404
Inum-inum, kanta-kanta.

Loon - Bohol / Re: Kidnapping of Small Kids in Bohol
March 22, 2009, 12:28:10 AM
#2407
Giingnan tingali nga "mag Tagalog ka". Mao nga ga wika sya ng Tagalig.
#2408
Cabilao is quite different from other islands in Bohol. You have to visit it and be amazed by its scenery and people. Hapit na pista didto. May 7!
#2409
Smart girl. During the Q&A, Maricel was asked: Which experience exclusive only to women that you want men to experience? Her answer was "dysmenorrhea" (sakto ba ni nga spelling?). Taas-taas iyang answer, and she concluded that if men had dysmenorrhea, even just for once, they would be more compassionate to women, better understand their nature, and be more respectful to them. Bravo!

Congratulations, Mayor Lloyd!

Nganong nahimo man intawong COME BANGAY ang origin nga panahon pa man diay to sa mga Katsila? Dihi sa Bohol, daghan tag mga baryo nga nagsugod og syllable nga "Cam-" ug "Can-" which is roughly translated to "belonging to", or "inhabited by". Mao na nga naa tay Can-ugis, Cantaongon, Canjulao, Cansubayon, Cambinocot, Cambaquiz, Campatud, etc. Cambangay is a common last name in San Miguel.

Agriculture plays a major role in the economic progress of San Miguel.  In fact, migrants, mostly from Loon, opened new lands for rice farming in Mayana, Capayas, Tomoc, etc.  This significant part of San Miguel's history, however, is never told in its history records.  The same holds true for Danao, Dagohoy, Catigbian, etc.
#2413

did you know that the panggangan causeway in calape is, at about 7km, the longest causeway in bohol? inig ka hapon, daghan kaayong mga langgam. nice kaayo kuhaan og hulagway, backlighted sa sunset.
#2415
apo, wala ra ba koy koy digicam, sukad masukad. diha koy SLR that I bought in the US many years ago, Minolta XG1, pero guba na.
#2416
nganong na "Dimiao Church in Loon" na man hinoon na?  One time didto pud ko sa Ayala Museum, diha puy usa ka tibuuk side altar nga identified as gikan sa Bohol, and donated by a certain Lopez Family. Tingalig ang mga Lopez ni nga kagikan og Iloilo, some of them collectors of antiques.
#2417
Nakadungog ko sa una og Can-omantad Falls. Asa tuod ni siya dapit? I hope this subject on "unknown" places with potential for tourism will encourage residents of all towns in Bohol to take pride in their own beautiful scenery, including historical places. Who knows, these sites will attract investors and, as a result, translate into employment opportunities among the locals.
#2418
#2420
All are in Loon. Danicop Hidden Valley is, well, a small valley surrounded by trees on one side and boulders on the other. Nindot nga lugar, ideal for nature tripping and picnicking.  Ang Island Lake naa sa Cabilao Island, daku nga lake, frequented by migratory birds. Naay viewing deck, istambayan maghulat sa sunset or inig subang sa bulan. The Cantam-is Caves are found in Barangay Cantam-is Baslay. Nice stalactites and stalagmites. Very accessible.
#2421
Have you heard of Danicop Hidden Valley? Island Lake? Kabantian Falls? Cantam-is Caves? (30 caves in one barangay alone!). Which "unknown" places in Bohol have you been to? Share some info here.  Describe their distinct features and advantage as potential tourist destinations.

Has anybody given us real data on how much money is poured into Bohol by way of sales in tourism products, goods and services, etc. during every TBTK? Sometimes I pity the Sandugo Streetdancing and Miss Bohol Sandugo committees who go from town to town practically begging the mayors to send delegates to these events. There was even a time when they showed pictures of potential candidates for Ms. Sandugo (2005?) and all the mayors had to do was "select and fund". For one edition of the Sandugo Streetdancing, the committee had to invite contingents from other provinces because it could not get enough delegates from Bohol LGUs. TBTK is a good vehicle for uniting Boholanos from around the globe. But for us who, in one way or another, are involved in some of its Bohol-based preparations and actual activities, we can't feel this goal has ever been achieved.  In 2003 we participated in the Ms. Bohol International pageant and prepared a beautiful and quite expensive float for our candidate (who eventually was declared first runner-up). On the day of the parade, another candidate boarded our float, even if the name of our sponsoring group appears in very big letters on all sides of the vehicle!  When we told her balikbayan adviser that it was our float, she arrogantly told us to stay away insisting that we should give priority to them because they are visitors. She was so angry, we really stepped back. A good Samaritan lent us his pick-up sans balloons and flowers.  I am sure that other TBTK frontliners have their own sad stories.  I am not for abolishing TBTK.  I only wish that balikbayans will see us hosts as co-equals, and not as "tig-".

Bohol Directory / Re: The Eskaya Tribe, a Fact
March 19, 2009, 12:20:55 AM
Si Mariano Sumatra, nga taga Loon, later surnamed Datahan (founder of Eskaya in Bohol, particulalry in Biabas, Guindulman) ug si Fabian Baha, ang nag lead sa "extension" community of the Eskaya sa Taytay, Duero nag-abot pa sa kinabuhi. Therefore, the Eskaya community in Bohol is not pre-Hispanic.
#2427
Ha ha ha ha! Hurooooot na jud ahong bilib nimu Raqz! With documented proofs of a culture-nurturing Bol-anon! Amen! Amen! Amen! Bow!

Bohol Directory / Re: The Eskaya Tribe, a Fact
March 16, 2009, 11:18:58 PM
Si Mariano Datahan, whose real name is Mariano Sumatra taga Loon, and most of the original members of the Eskaya community in Biabas, Guindulman were his friends and relatives that he recruited from Loon. They also adopted a communal system of agriculture, diin si Mariano or Anoy maoy hatagan sa pahat sa abot aron ibaligya, ang halin gamiton ipalit og inputs for the next cropping season.

#2430
Next time mouli ka, try pagbuwad og lukot aron madala nimo diha. Then, you only have to rehydrate it kon kan-on na.
Unya kay Binul-anon man, so nahimong binagow, which means giluto sa bagol. Imagine a clay pot, kanang atong naandan nga ku'on, half-filled with water. Patungan na siya og naghayang nga perforated half of a bagol. Adto ibutang ang dried grated cassava, plain, kinamayan or with butung. . . kaon na!

There's must be something about karst islands that make their food products superior than elsewhere's. Sa yuta tingali na. When it comes to mangoes man gani, superior ang sa isla sa Guimaras.

Loon - Bohol / Re: Kidnapping of Small Kids in Bohol
March 15, 2009, 07:58:45 PM
The incident happened in Barangay Moto Sur. The Grade 2 kids are enrolled at Loon South Central Elementary School.  There have been a lot of talk about kid kidnapping a few months back. Now it is actually happening, a although frustrated attempt.
#2434
Ha ha ha! Over sad ka Raqz, da. You should try sa bag-ong hina-un nga binago, humut, humuk, lami kaayo iparis og kinilaw! Naay puti lang, naa puy kinamayan. Naa pa juy butangan og strips of young coconut meat.
#2435
I correct myself, "kahoja", not "jahoja".
#2436
We should be proud ani ni jane censoria cajes kay national president jud sa SK. Taga diin man ni sya? Di ba taga Tagbilaran man ni sya? But I was told taga Trinidad kuno ni siya. Pero ang iyang older sister nga kanhi provincial SK chairman taga Talibon man to. Congrats, Jane!
#2437
Kon gusto mo moadto sa cabilao, sakay lang mo sa cogon terminal, naay diresto sa sandingan. from there, 10 minutes lang across ang cabilao. then sakay og habal habal paingon sa la estrella. nindot sya nga place. kasagaran mga europeans ang mga clients. wala kaayo ma hype sa bohol kay ang booking nya sa europe man and through the internet. tapad ana, naay polaris beach and dive resort. nindut pud kaayo. mga hidden getaways ni sila sa bohol.
#2438
Breadfruit ba. Labu pud kaayo. Pwedi nimong i barbecue, or isugba tibuok fruit, with panit. Then hiwaon. Simhota, di ba kay maglaway ka!
#2439
Nice ang pool underneath it. Go na kamo, pero mas maayo naa moy expert guide.
#2440
kanang inyong gihaon sa lamesa samtang nakakita inyong mga bana, apili nag dajok, di ba kay  mosuka jud na silag samot. patan-awa nga imong i-stretch and salted tina-i, ug itulon pinaisa ang kamot. ha ha ha!
#2441
that photo of the cortes church shows only the ornate "capital" (top) of a column. tingalig na misspell lang ang "capital" ug inadvertently nahimong "capitol". nice photos jud bitaw. sakto ang mga reviews. loon church is also nice kon kuhaan inig gawas jud sa adlaw. ang resulta, morag mag yellow ang mga stone slabs. kanang abatan river, taken from the word "abat", to meet, or "abatanan" a meeting place. sa wala pay tulay anha mangabat ang mga bangkero sa isig ka tampi sa suba. kanang pagatpatan sa panggangan daghan kaayo nag mga birds labi na inig ka hapon.
#2442
pero kon kanang bayhana imong kauban maka relax kaha ta, nga morag makagasto man ta anag daku, ha ha ha!  pag maintain lang anang iyang hair extensions, purdoy na ta.

In fact, tibuok Southern Leyte. All 19 municipalities, "j" jud na sila. Bajad, tataja, nanaja, baboja. jahoja, ba'ja, taytajan, lataylatajan, tikjup, bantaji, etc.

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) confers the Local Government Leadership Award (LGLA) to outstanding public officials and role models in governance. In Bohol, only the following were honored with this prestigious award:

Erico B. Aumentado, Outstanding Governor
Dan Neri Lim, Outstanding City Mayor
Dr. Cesar Tomas M. Lopez (Loon), Outstanding Municipal Mayor (He is now senior member of the Bohol Provincial Board)

We have quite a lot of outstanding mayor awardees, but the awards were conferred by sociocivic associations (kuno) that require the awardees to pay for their own copies of the souvenir program, dinner (usually good for two) and citation plaques.  Yes, friends, daghan ga negosyo og mga awards.  Pangutana ra gud mos mga mayor.

Naay miingon nga kanang lugara naa jud kunoy tighunong nga van ilabi na kon palis, which is maoy time sa pagka hitabo.  Taliawan man jud kuno nang lugara. Naa man gani kunoy tig pa deliver og construction materials diha, pero walay silingan nga nakaila sa addressee. Kon tinuod man ugaling nang mga pangidnap, unsaon man kaha nila ang mga bata? ibaligya sa mga pedophile? kuhaan og mga vital organs aron ibaligya sa Amerika? Pagka makahahadlok baya sa mga possibilities! Mag-amping lang gyud ang tanan.  By the way, hain na man kaha tong duha ka mga dalagang estudyante sa Bohol High nga nangawala? Taud-taud na baya to.
#2449
Ikaw, Yee, modawat man kaha kag labada in the future, asa dapit imong itukod nga laundry shop? Ang underwear karon Side A; pagka ugma, kay wa may nalabhan, Side B na of the same piece. Pagka sunod adlaw, Side AA!, meaning Side A Again!

#2450
watch out for other boholano fashion designers: kate torralba (she designs for kris aquino and other showbiz personalities); lino "linoi" almirol, a well-known manila-based designer of haute couture and casuals, more sought-after for his bridal gowns; and mario rotersos, who represented the philippines in a fashion design competition in honghong about ten years ago. he is now based in europe.

Naa pa tay usa ka boxer:

Santos Cartagenas. I think he has an Oriental boxing title. Calling the Cartagenas families of Mansasa and Loon: please provide details.
#2453
#2454
raqz, affordable ra kaayo nang 15p basta usa lang pud ka van nang imong batalyon. ayaw lang pag dala og usa ka trak. mas barato man tingali ang charge sa bata.  by the way, daghan na jug bayranan nato ang sagbayan peak owners kay gasigi tag advertize dinhi sa ilang resort.
#2455
#2456
Kabkab is ground cassava, flattened and sundried. The mash could also be cut into strips before sundrying. When fried, they extend into cracker-like pieces. Traditionally paired with "latik". As far as I know, Vicky Wallace is the only person that serves kabkab with pesto sauce, green tomato bits and cheese.

Lutgardo "Gardy" Labad also won another Best Musical Score Award for Nora Aunor's "Naglalayag".

Other Boholanos of note:

Anna Maris Igpit, Bb. Pilipinas - World 2006 (?), competed in Poland, was in the top 20 in best in swimsuit.

Michael Dadap, internationally known classical guitarist; his brother (I forgot his name), is also a known choir trainer and conductor, specializing in nationalistic songs.

Gigi Galon, singer from Calape (was always seen on Seeing Stars with Joe Quirino), asa na kaha siya karon?

Jinky Vidal, another singer from Calape

Salvacion Oppus - Yniguez, soprano, has performed abroad representing the Philippines; former governor of Southern Leyte; her daughter Rosette Y. Lerias became member of the House of Representatives representing the lone district of Southern Leyte.

Ricardo Miranda, governor of the not-yet-divided Davao province

SOMEBODY SHOULD KEEP A RECORD OF ALL THESE INFO FOR FUTURE REFERENCE OR, PERHAPS, PUBLICATION.

most probably maribojoc, overlooking barangay bood.
#2459
Vicky is worth emulating. Some of her treats are common knowledge but nobody except her has dared to venture into this kind of health and wellness business with environmental consciousness. Her kabkab is served not with the usual latik but with pesto sauce made more mouthwatering by some chunks of green tomatoes and crushed cheese. Naglaway na ko!

Interesting! Anoy Datahan's original name is Mariano Sumatra and the Wikipedia source says that the Eskayas originated in Sumatra.  There are still a lot of Sumatras in Loon, Anoy's jometown.

I agree. In fact tungod sa iyang mga initiatives during the time of Gov. Rene Relampagos, nagbunga og maayo ang cultural renaissance program sa Bohol, ug kini gi recognize pinaagi sa usa ka Gawad Galing Pook, the most prestigious national award for best models in good governance.

By the way, how true is it nga sigi nag pinalitay og yuta sa Getafe, especially sa dapit diin tukuron ang approach sa tulay?

James Warren writes that the raids were economic in nature. In fact, the southerners in his book were not called Muslims but Magindanaw, Balangingi, Laut, Illanon or Iranon, and Tiron (pl. Tirones). Thus the raids could not have been religious in nature.   The "mangdadagit" or "mangangayaw" swooped down on coastal communities of Mindanao up to Batanes not only to look for goods and gold but also to caputre ablebodied men who would work on their farms, dive for pearls, collect sea cucumbers and beeswax, etc.  All these they would trade with Europeans and Chinese. The other captives would row their "pangku" (boats);  the women served their royalty as maids or concubines; the younger captives were sometimes sold to Chinese merchants.  The raids were also done to fill a gap created by the Europeans who enslaved many of the Magindanaw, etc. some of whom they took with them to Europe or wherever they sailed.  The raiders were fierce warriors. I suspect that the word "Tirong" that the old folks use to warn misbehaving kids ("Hala, paglangas mo kay ipahaon jud mo sa Tirong.") was derived from "Tiron".

Loon commemorates the Battle of Moalong every September 27 as mandated by an ordinance.  This event has been observed since 2001 to coincide with the Municipal Day of Prayer for World Peace that also started after 9/11.  The provincial government responded to the call for world peace shortly, on October 6.

Do we say, "Gedele ang paghekot sa kandeng denheng dapeta."? Funny, di ba? But this is quite common in southwestern up to the southeastern rim of Bohol. The majority of Bol-anons, however, would say, "Gidili ang hikut sa kanding dinhing dapita."

Every old church in Bohol has its own unique features. Morag museum kada usa. It's true that many non-Boholano couples have made Bohol their wedding venue. Late last year two doctor friends of mine (from Cebu and Bacolod), both having no relatives in Bohol decided to get married at the beautiful Dauis Church. Their wedding reception was held at nearby Terraza de Marivelez behind the convent.

I admire Apothecary for the wealth of information he has been sharing with us.  By the way, anybody who needs more information on Bohol's churches can get hold of Jose Trota's Visita Iglesia Bohol, so far providing the most complete and in-depth description of the province's churches. On the cover is the Our Lady of Light church in Loon.

At the back of the Loon church are four flights of coral-stone steps called Inang-angan that connects Napo, Loon's original settlement, to the present town center that sits on a plateau. The four flights have a total of 174 steps, not 165. There is a fifth flight that leads to the old convent, now Sacred Heart Academy. It has 38 steps. All in all, Inang-angan has 212 steps.  I think no other built heritage of such magnitude exists in the country.  Meanwhile, the name "Napo" means "dapit nga balason", which is the character of the barangay.  This explains why there are interior barangays in Bohol that are called Napo. They are located near sandy river banks.

i agree with the tourist guide. great ang choco hills for those who love nature at its best. sagbayan peak has a lot of potential, pero not for foreign tourists nga naay mas superior infra facilities sa ilang dapit. kon i-redesign unta ang sagbayan peak, kanang naa juy klaro nga unifying element, pwede siya mahimong world class. sa pagka karon, dili na ko tigdala og mga friends didto. There is also an attempt to make their restaurant a photo gallery of sort. But there are no messages that describe the photos. I am sure the pictures have lots of stories to tell.

These are tidbits of what I know about the Eskayas. Mariano Sumatra of Loon town went with a priest to Manila (to study perhaps) and surfaced in Mindanao as a pro-Katipunan organizer. He went back to Bohol and settled in Biabas, Guindulman where he started a community that used its own alphabet, signs and languages reportedly to continue his advocacy and evade suspecting authorities. He introduced a communal system of agriculture with him providing the inputs and the farmers giving back to him a portion of their harvest, thus he became a "datahan", someone to whom one makes a "data", or installment payment. While the Eskayas could be considered as a tribe, this may be as far only as their unique social, economic and learning systems. If we consider race, they do not belong to one other than ours. While in Biabas, Anoy frequently visited his hometown and even convinced some of his friends and relatives to join him in Biabas.  This may explain why surnames that are common in Loon are carried by some households in Guindulman and in Duero, where another Eskaya community was established.  The many Datahans and Sumatras in Bohol are, therefore, blood relatives.

In our research on the Boholano language, the vowels "i" and "u", rather than "e" and "o", are more frequently used in most parts of Bohol. The "e" and "o' are more common among Boholanos on the southwest  up to the southeast part of the province.

The second time Bb. Pilipinas World Anna Maris Igpit joined (and won) in the Miss Sandugo it was an open competition.  In fact many from her batch were pageant shoppers/veterans.  A runner-up was even later proclaimed Miss Cebu 2007 (Angelique Tan?). In this same contest full-blooded Boholana Joan Kristine Uy (Ms. Bohol International First Runner-up) was among the 12 finalists and even got three special awards.  Loonanon Uy, who once studied at Bohol Wisdom School also held the titles Miss Northern Samar and Miss Cordova (Cebu). Bohol Directory / Re: Boholano / Bisaya Language
February 17, 2009, 09:41:33 PM
Binul-anon is a level above a dialect.  In fact it is a variety of the Sinugbuanon language. That is why Boholanos always use the Sinugbuanon in public speech, letters, literary arts, etc.  Even in drama or stage plays, Sinugbuanon gyud ang gigamit nato sa Bohol, except usahay kon naay mga comic characters.  In most parts of Bohol, the vowels used are "i" and "u".  This is the case for all towns north of Tagbilaran up to the northeast, as well as almost all central towns.  The "o" and "e" are common in Panglao, Dauis, and almost all southern towns up to the southeastern part of the province. There are words unique to Bohol, like those already mentioned. Other examples: himi, danggay, ituk, gunja, iti (to dry up) etc.  "Gunja" cannot be "Cebuanized" into "gunya". Similarly, "jamo" should not be "yamo", because "jamo" is "jamo", whose Arabic origin means total or absolute. Other peculiarities: 1) a "y" that ends a word becomes "j" if a suffix is appended to the word (latay / latajan). This, however is more pronounced in Southern Leyte (mas daghan ilang "j" kay sa molupyo sa Bohol. Examples in Southern Leyte: nanay / nanaja; baboy/ baboja; kahoy / kahoja. 2) an "l" that ends a word becomes a "w" (kasal / kasaw; tubol / tubow; kural / kuraw; habol / habow); 3) if the "l" is straddled between two "o" or "u", it is lost in the pronunciation (Dipolog / Dipo'og; nahulog / nahu'og; tulo / tu'o (three or drip); padulong / padu'ong; gipamulong / gipamu'ong = to speak or utter. 4) However, in Maribojoc, Loon, Antequera, San Miguel, Sta. Fe (Danao), etc., if this word is pronounced "gipamUng", with the "U" as in "church", the word will now mean "looking for something".  5) Did you know that in Dimiao, instead of saying "Para asa man ni?" (What is this for?), they utter "Asa man ni para?" Morag nagsakay no? Well, sakto tingali sila kay sa ininglis nauwahi man pud ang "for". 6) In Dauis, note that sometimes they do not use prepositions or identifiers "Adto ko (sa) inyo". "Wala (si) Nanay diri".  During the pre-Spanish period, Dauis used to be a business center for some Chinese traders. In dealing with them, the locals had to use shortcuts. This practice stuck. 7) In Dauis, Panglao and some southern towns, the syllable is actually pronounced like, in "gakaWO, taWO, baWO, etc.

In the following examples, pronounce the letter "U" as it is pronounced in the word "church". This is most common in Alicia, Maribojoc, Antequera, San Miguel, Loon, Danao, etc.

In some parts of Bohol, the letter “r” is replaced with “d” when it is found “inside” the word. Examples: iding, ido, kadaU-kadaU, kaliding, UdUy.

“Naku, naku, naku . . . mahuhulog ang bata!” / Binul-anUn: “AU, aU, aU . . . mahu’ug ang bata!” / Ay, ay ay . . . mahulog ang bata!”

“Naku, ang pangit naman niyan.” / Binul-aNun: “AU, maUta pUd ana.” / SinugbuanUn: “Ay, kamaot pod ana.”

“Sabi pupunta ka, hindi ka raw dumating.  / Binul-anUn: BUk rag moadto ka, wa man kuno ka moabut. “ / SinugbuanUn: “Ingon moadto ka, wala man kuno ka moabot.”

The word “bUk” is unique to Binul-anUn.

Nakalimot na ko sa title ani, but I remember this was used during our Grade IV entrance march for a mass dance (field demonstration). Here are a few lines:

Motchokoy sprikiti kaguykoy sprikiti rikitoy rikiti rikitoy
Singharoy aguruy agukoy 2x
Motchokoy sprikiti kaguykoy sprikiti rikitoy rikiti rikitoy
Singharoy hoy hoy, singharoy hoy hoy, butangi kay gatutoy!

Yoyoy is a genius novelty song composer, walay makalupig. In fact, I consider him one of the great artists Bohol ever produced. Negative lang ko niya on two issues: 1) when he said he was Cebuano when interviwed on TV by the late Joe Quirino (Seeing Stars with Joe Quirino). I swear, I saw that episode with us neighbors trooping to the only house in our neighborhood that had a TV set at that time (early '70s), because it was announced that Yoyoy would appear on TV that night. Namalikas jud ang ubang mga tiguwang pagpanguli and 2) he inspired the filming of or allegedly wrote the script for "Bol-anon Ko Nyor", retitled into "El Byahedor" after a Boholano lawyer filed a compalint against the producers and won. The movie (I never saw it) allegedly made fun of Boholanos.  Kon akoy pangutan-on, gusto ko motan-aw ana nga movie aron ma confirm nato kon unsay tan-aw nila ni Yoyoy (and those non-Boholanos who were involved in the film's production) natong mga Bol-anon sa una. By the way, that lawyer who sued the film outfit should also be remembered tungod sa iyang nabuhat. Kinsa kahay nakaila pa ana niya?  Going back to Yoyoy and his songs, kinsa pa bay makalupig niya? Pero kon maminaw jud kag maayo, very educational ang iyang mga kanta: Philippine geography, the benefits of a morning exercise, words ending in "tion" (shon), kinds of seashells, kinds of bombs/armaments, heritage (preserving the "sayaw sa mga older" in "Alimukoy"), etc. Diha pa man gani toy ubang kanta nga walay airplay kay sa Kinampay Records pa man to gi produce. I hope the Bohol museum will consider having a complete collection of his songs/albums.

Mr. Bean:

Here are some information regarding the late Justino ‘Ning’ R. Romea: composer of the Bohol Hymn or "Awit sa Bohol" and many school anthems.  He is best remembered for the love song "Ako Kang Paabuton", the folk song "Sa Daplin sa Baybayon" as well as most of the songs featured in the annual ‘drama’ presentations in his native Napo for which he served as writer, director and musical arranger.

Additional information regarding his father, Bernardo "Leon" Vidal Romea: Rondalla Trainer; Scriptwriter, Director and Musical Arranger for the "Drama" in Napo. Bernardo or "Pantaleon" or "Leon", as he was more popularly known, was born on March 12, 1895 in Barangay Napo to spouses Marcelo (Oyong Eloy) and Maria (Oyang Iyay) Vidal, a second wife.  His grandparents were Domingo Romea and Cecilia Ordubanes of Barangay Taytay. After completing his elementary education and first year of high school, the latter at Bohol High School, he qualified for a teaching post, a feat in those days.  On June 16, 1910, at age 15, he was appointed temporary teacher in Loon.  A few years later, he passed the teachers' examinations and went on to become principal for 19 years. Romea's command of the English language was grammatically flawless.  He bought American books and subscribed to local English magazines (e.g. Free Press, Graphics, etc.) hoping that his children would love or develop the habit of reading. They indeed became bookworms and their communication skills improved. His passion for music was such that he composed songs, organized rondallas wherever he was assigned in his teaching career, and promoted and participated in competitions.  This went on even through his retirement years.  He could skillfully play any of the string instruments in the rondalla but was at his best with the banduria.  Romea was keen in distinguishing the slightest discord that at times during rondalla rehearsals, he would suddenly wave a hand for a pause just to tune up a dissonant instrument. Romea was also called a "dramaturgo" for he wrote and directed stage plays or "drama" which always served as the culminating feature of the barrio fiesta celebration in Napo.  In fact, he is acknowledged as the original playwright, director and composerâ€"musical arranger of Napo’s stage plays that are now mounted on May 25 of each year without fail.  It is believed that Napo holds the record of staging the longest running series of annual plays in Bohol, if not the whole country.

By the way, Mr. Bean, Mr. Eugene Mejares, who might also be your neighbor in Maribojoc, is also from Napo, Loon, Bohol. He collects 'drama' scripts and had directed quite a few stage plays during his prime.

That is why walay Diocese of Tacloban, but Diocese of Palo. "Mo-unlod na pud ang Bohol kay pista man", they would say in jest.

The Bohol hymn was composed by the late Justino "Ning" R. Romea of Napo, Loon, Bohol who later settled in Maribojoc with his wife Susana Miranda (also rom Napo) and family because they were able to acquire a property there.  Hilig man gud mamulinaw tong Tatay ni Nong Tining, si Leon Romea (drama director in Napo, like his son). The song was composed in 1970 or early '70s with English lyrics. Then Gov. Lino Chatto launched a binisaya-translation-of-the-song contest. He could have translated it himself man gud. And I know he could do justice sa pag translate kay siya gud ang nakahibalo pag-ayo sa iyang gi sulat.  Tuod man, napadayon jud ang contest (won by Ma'am Ganade of Holy Spirit School), ug ang binisaya na ang nahibaw-an sa kadaghanan. Tungod kay managlahi man ang phrasing sa ininglis ug sa binisaya, expected jud nga naay ma "lost in translation".  Pananglit, the very beautiful line nga "caressed by the sun, bathed by the sea, and kissed by the cool breeze" nahimo na lang nga "dinasig sa kinaiyahan". Ang "night and day" nahimong "sa adlaw'g gabii, taknang tanan".

Romea also composed many school anthems (UB Hymn, BSAT Hymn, etc) and is best remembered for the love song "Ako Kang Paabuton" (kanunay masaypan nga "Buhi sa Kanunay"), the folk song "Sa Daplin sa Baybayon" as well as most of the songs featured in the annual ‘drama’ presentations in his native Napo for which he served as writer, director and musical arranger. Lately, I was surprised to listen to a downloaded version of "Ako Kang Paabuton" by Bayang Barrios.

Nong Tining was also a revered columnist of Bohol Chronicle. Up to this day, wala pay makatupong sa kanindot niyang mosulat og column, according to the current crop of journalists nga nakaabot pa niya.  In act, front page jud to iyang column, defying editing rules) kay daghan man mag-atang.

When we celebrated the centennial of our independence in 1998, the Cultural Center of the Philippines launched a coffetable book that recognized the Top 100 Filipinos in Culture.  Three are Boholanos. One of them is Napoleon "Billy" Veloso Abueva, National Artist in Sculpture. The other two are Loonanon brothers Jose "Pete" F. Lacaba Jr. and Emmanuel Agapito F. Lacaba.  Both are top-calibre writers of poetry, prose and film scripts. They are described below:

Jose ‘Pete’ F. Lacaba Jr. - brother of Emmanuel ‘Eman’ Agapito F. Lacaba and former member of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board. Pete is a poet, editor and scriptwriter of some of Lino Brocka’s memorable films.  He is currently the executive editor of Yes! magazine. He has authored six poetry collections in Filipino and a collection of journalistic reportage entitled Days of Disquiet, Nights of Rage. He has also written screenplays for award-winning films including Jaguar, Bayan Ko: Kapit sa Patalim, Orapronobis, Sister Stella L, Eskapo, Segurista and Rizal sa Dapitan.  The 10th Osian's - Cinefan Festival of Asian and Arab Cinema honored him with the Aruna Vasudev Lifetime Achievement Award for his writings on cinema.

Emmanuel ‘Eman’ Agapito F. Lacaba + - considered the only poet warrior of the Philippines and a genius while studying at the Ateneo de Manila University.  The book Six Young Filipino Martyrs states, “Not many poets are given the honor of becoming martyrs for their country. In the Philippines there are only two: Jose Rizal and a disciple he never knew." That disciple is Eman, son of Jose Monreal Lacaba, a Loonanon. The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) confers the Gawad Eman Lacaba to young poets.  Eman wrote the lyrics of “Awit ni Kuala”, the song sung by Lolita Rodriguez in the classic Lino Brocka film masterpiece "Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang". He also composed new revolutionary lyrics in Cebuano for some wellâ€"known folk songs.

The first and only time I met Jimmy was in a recording studio where he was recording a jingle for Fastpak, a courier service company. He was, at that time, a sought-after jingle maker in cebu. Later, I saw one edition of the Manila Metro Pop where a song of his (Ang Iibigin ay Ikaw) was a finalist. I think, the song introduced Lani MIsalucha to the mainstream music industry. It was also used as theme song of a GMA teleserye of the same title.  It has remained my favorite among his compositions.  Correct me Jimmy if I'm wrong: Is it true that the song was first entered in the Cebu Pop with Binisaya lyrics?

Yoyoy was a genius! If you read between the lines of his so-called novelty songs, you will know how serious he is as a songwriter. In "Alimokoy" he talks about our Boholano heritage as being similar to a tree. He advises "ayaw pagputla kay makaluluoy. Kon imong putlon, mangabali ang sanga, mangalarag ang dahon ... aber, atong sayawon ang sayaw sa mga older, aron ikumparar ta sa sayaw sa mga teenager ...".  His only mistake, though, was, when he was still introduced to showbiz, he reavealed on "Seeing Stars with Joe Quirino" that he was from Cebu. I swear I saw and heard that on TV. Bag-o pa ang TV sa amo niadto. So ang tanang ako ug mga silingan excited kaayo mi kay nahibaw-an man nga naa kuno si Yoyoy sa JQ, only to be dismayed (especially me) by his remarks. Another was when he suggested the title and most of the scenes sa movie nga "Bol-anon Ko, Nyor", which was retitled "El Byahedor" after an angry Boholano filed a suit against Yoyoy and the movie outfit.  Dugay na nakong napasaylo si Yoyoy.  Mipatigbabaw jud ang akong pag idolize niya.  Nag-inusara siya. Walay makatupong sa iyang nahimo in the field of novelty music.  Sa buhi pa to sya, pirmi lang to sila ni Max Surban mag back-to-back concert tour. Yoyoy's music must always stay in every Bol-anon's heart!

The data  presented here are results of a survey that was conducted using random sampling.  In reasearch there are always margins of error, either wide or slim. Loon's case is not isolated. Data for other municipalities are as glaring. In all of Bohol public service still has a lot of room for improvement. But it is people's good deeds including discipline that make improvements in the socioeconomic data.

We can speculate that there are limited employment opportunities in the town. But this is also common in all other towns of Bohol as well as Tagbilaran. But among Boholanos, ang mga Loonanon ang labing latagaw aron lamang mangita sa proverbial green parture, land of milk and honey and the pot of gold. Blame it on poor agricultural production due to poor soil condition, mountainous topography and the people's aspirations. Kon nakasuroy mo sa mga public markets in all of Leyte, Samar and Biliran as well as in Siquijor, Negros, Masbate and most parts of Mindanao you will be amazed upon discovering that Loonanons are lording it over in the retail business in these places. And they continue to import their kins from their hometown aron patrabahoon or paeskwelahon. Loon's two DepEd districts and seven high schools also indicate a relatively high literacy, which means that there are a lot of high school graduates entering college as well as lots of college graduates and professionals who have left their town to practice their profession. A town in southern Bohol claims that it is the town of adventurers. That still has to be confirmed considering the proclivity of Loonanons to tread on unfamiliar paths.  Even before the Second World War, many of them have gone abroad. In California, a group called Loonanon Pioneers of America has been in existence since the 1930s. The drop in Loon's population has not, however, hindered the development of the town and its people. This could be attributed to its relatively high number of OFWs and to new investments.

You're right again, Grazie7y. Mao nay takla! Although there are many varieties of takla, the main characteristics are the enlarged pincers (paak), sometimes as large as the body.

Many things have been asked about the takla. Mao ni akong mga apas-sumpay: Takla is not endemic to Calape. The first one in 2000 was named Uli Calape. A friend of mine, who was an SB member (later lost and now have returnee to the SB) sought my help in conceptualizing the streetdancing festival there. The dancers mimicked the takla's movement, that of flicking its telson (tail) against its back to produce the characteristic takla sound. The basketball court of the town's new cultural center bears a huge painting of the takla to symbolize Calape.

Grazie7y, you're right, mora'g pasayan ang takla, pero mas bus-ok. Mas sayon kan-on. Similar to pinasugbu ang processing sa tinunlob, but tinunlob does not have sesame seeds.
