News - New York in the grip of "historic" storm

A blizzard for the history books is how some forecasters are calling the snowstorm which is pummelling the Northeastern United States. Five governors have declared states of emergency as around 350000 homes and businesses lost electricity, roads were closed and thousands of flights disrupted. New York's three major airports shut down with stranded passengers at Laguardia being offered emergency bedding. Over four thousand flights were cancelled. Winds gusted to 60 kilometres per hour driving the snow expected to reach up to 60 centimetres in some areas. There is no let up with forecasters predicting the storm was just ramping up to full strength. "And by the time the storm passes early Saturday afternoon we are expecting to have accumulations of ten to fourteen inches across the five boroughs based on the latest national weather service," Michael Bloomberg, Mayor of New York told reporters. People were warned to stay off the roads, advised to remain at home and to stock up on food and other supplies. The storm is raging along the New York to Boston corridor which is home to some 25 million people and for many the devastation of October's hurricane Sandy is still fresh in their minds. Meanwhile in Canada its reported a snowstorm driving across southern Ontario has left at least three people dead

NEW YORK (CNN) -- A potentially historic winter storm closed in on New England on Friday, with tens of millions of people in its path and already a trail of thousands of canceled flights. Late Friday afternoon, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo issued a state of emergency. The latest forecast suggests that the worst of the weather could hit Boston, from about 5 pm Friday until Saturday morning, and bring in just under 2 feet of snow. All cars and trucks, except emergency vehicles, must be off Massachusetts roads by 4 pm Light to moderate accumulations will continue through Saturday evening, as two storm systems converge across the Northeast and spawn travel headaches for a large swath of the country. In New York, the heaviest snowfall is expected to start falling at 7 pm Friday, with accumulations of up to about a foot. High winds could also stir up trouble at sea and push flood waters up and over New England coastlines. "It's going to be one of the strongest winter storms we've seen in a very long time," CNN meteorologist Pedram Javaheri said. Check arrivals and departures at South Florida airports. But by early next week, much of the Northeast will re-emerge from the white blanket, as temperatures in many places are expected to rise above 40 degrees. The gathering snowstorm is driving droves of New Englanders into shops to gather supplies and brace for possible record-breaking weather. California lawmakers are proposing an anti-Second Amendment law that will rival the one recently passed in New York. Democrats in control of the state Legislature unveiled ten proposals they boasted will make California the most restrictive state in the nation for possessing legally purchased firearms. The new law would outlaw all semiautomatic weapons in the state and force gun owners to load bullets one at a time. Kaitlyn Collins is a former Green Bay Packers cheerleader. She's also a real live human being with thoughts and feelings and emotions, something that didn't occur to commenters on the Chicago Bears Fan Facebook page. On Monday night, that page ran a photo of Collins with the caption "Like If You Agree The Packers Have The Worst Cheerleaders In The NFL!" The Bears fan page is a popular place, with 86000-plus likes. You know the Bears-Packers rivalry runs deep, and thus, the comments got vicious in a hurry. In response, Collins made the following video, calling out not just the page but several commenters by name: That video, a silent spool of signs, is well worth watching. "Cyberbullying" may seem like a media concoction or an overreaction, but to the people who have suffered the words of others, it's real and it's painful to the point of real damage. Facebook apparently didn't agree that the post met its definition of cyberbullying, and so did not take the post down. But as the comments on the post softened and even chastised the very idea of such a cheap shot, the Fan Page decided to take down the post on its own. "NADINE KOMM" rief Runa und ich ging zu ihr. "Hier ist ein Tür" sagte sie und ich ging rüber zur Tür und öffnete sie. "Ja sie ist auf" sagte ich stolz und wir gingen rein. "Wo sind wir jetzt hier?" fragte Runa.. "So wie es aussieht im Keller" wir gingen in alle Räume rein um zu gucken ob nicht vielleicht eine Treppe ist die zum Haus führt. Bis ich vor einer stand. Das muss sie sein! "Runa komm ich hab eine Treppe gefunden" sagte ich und wir gingen hoch und wir waren im Flur. "Das ist kein Keller das ist ein Labyrinth" sagte Runa und ließ sich auf die Couch fallen.. Ich sah auf die Uhr und wir hatten noch reichlich Zeit bis heute Abend. Ehrlich gesagt geh ich nur wegen Runa dorthin. Ich meine ich bin kein One Direction Fan und war auch nie einer. Und wie unfreundlich Harry zu mir war im Restaurant war versteh ich auch nicht erst lächelte er mich die ganze Zeit an und dann schwups war er total anders. Naja so sind die Stars halt ich glaube er hält sich für etwas besonderes. Was wenn die andere Jungs genau so sind? Ich will echt den Abend lieber hier verbringen anstatt dort. Choirmaster Michael Brewer Guilty Of Sex Abuse

The woman at the centre of sex abuse allegations involving top choirmaster Michael Brewer killed herself during the trial, it has emerged. The body of violin teacher Frances Andrade, 48, was found at her home less than a week after she gave evidence against Michael Brewer at Manchester Crown Court. In a statement released after the verdicts were delivered, her son claimed she had not received the help she needed from authorities despite two previous attempts to kill herself. Brewer, a former National Youth Choir music director, and his ex-wife were found guilty on five counts of indecently assaulting the former music student more than 30 years ago. The 68-year-old was convicted of sexually abusing her in his office at Chetham's School of Music in Manchester when she was aged 14 and 15. Frances Andrade was described as "an amazing person" His ex-wife, Kay Brewer, 68, was also convicted of indecently assaulting Mrs Andrade, then known as Shorney, when she was an adult at their former family home. The jury returned not guilty verdicts on charges that Brewer raped her when she was aged 18 and that Mrs Brewer aided and abetted the attack. Brewer was also cleared of one charge of indecently assaulting Mrs Andrade when she was a child in his home. The Crown Prosecution Service decided to continue with the trial and the judge ruled that news of Mrs Andrade's death should be kept from jurors until after they reached their verdicts. Music is all from Evanescence's The Open Door album from 2006. I am sorry that it's such a long video, but when dealing with special fx make up and the like you've got to explain things very very carefully. It can be tricky and when done wrong it can ruin the whole look. You can save a bad prosthetic with a good color job. You can ruin a great prosthetic with a bad color job.
