just a thought... maybe the philippines should stop calling the sea 'south china sea' for starters.  naming the whole area after one country is encouraging for that country to claim everything in it as its own.

in the middle east, there's a disputed island named kish that's being claimed by both the united arab emirates and iran.  naturally, it remains unsettled until now.  the thing is what used to be the 'persian gulf' surrounded by most of these middle east countries (and where kish is) is now called the 'arabian gulf'.  there really was no sense naming the gulf after only one country such as iran (persia).

why a sea surrounded by many countries including the philippines be named only after china challenges one's imagination.

right. and where do the chinese get this 'historical' claim basis. just because Zheng He was sent in a mission in the 1600s and visited the reef, therefore the PRC claims historical claim? chshitt na chshitt. Old malay (filipino) fishermen have been fishing these waters since time immemorial.

right. Philippines should just actively call the 'south china sea' as 'The Western Philippine Sea'. ;)

MANILA, Philippines -  Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago defended yesterday the move of the government to file a diplomatic protest against the People’s Republic of China (PROC) after two Chinese ships harassed a government research vessel conducting an oil exploration mission near the disputed Spratly Islands last March 2.

Santiago, a constitutional and international law expert, said the Philippines merely pursued its territorial claim over the disputed islands when it responded to a call from the research vessel for assistance after two Chinese ships hovered around them while conducting their seismic survey in the area.

Mr. Santiago, the Chinese don't care for international sea laws. If She did she would have never had destroyed a Vietnamese battle group during a disputed claim of Vietnamese-claimed spratlys.( A Chinese naval battle group sunk and destroyed the Vietnamese battle group....)

Why would the Philippines send a government research vessel by itself in disputed territory? Stupid!

The research vessel should have been given Philippine naval escort. They should have deployed 3 escort corvettes and should have fired warning shots against the 2 Chinese vessels. It was a government ship. An attack on a government ship is an act of war.

By giving into China's bullying, we indirectly submit to her supposed hegemony and strengthen their bold claims.

Santiago said under international law, a claimant country should be aggressive in seeking its claim to a disputed territory.

“The claim should be continuous and uninterrupted. You should always enforce your claim,” said Santiago who also explained that the Chinese actions might have also been an effort to re-assert its claim over the disputed islands.

Santiago told radio dzBB that the ownership claims would still take a long time to be resolved.

She even doubted if the country claimants, especially China, would allow the issue to be heard before the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

“I am sure China will not allow this. (The issue) will never reach the ICJ. In other words, it will never have a judicial settlement,” Santiago said.

Asked if the recent incident would affect the government’s appeal to stay the execution of three Filipinos who were sentenced to die last month for drug trafficking, Santiago did not rule out the possibility that China might use the Spratlys issue to further its cause.

Well considering that Philippines has now recognized the PRC and adheres to the One China Policy, thereby abandoning political recognition of Taiwan as 'China', we have already become part of the Chinese Sphere of Control/ Interest. Part of the greater Chinese plan of regional Chinese Hegemony.

We'll see what they do in 4-5 decades time when they have eclipsed America. Just watch how 'diplomatic' the Chinese government will be. She will swallow the whole Spratley chain as she did Arunchal Pradesh (a former Indian territory).

The Philippine Marine base in the Kalayaan group would be overwhelmed by Chinese Naval Marines. Remember China's tactical policy: strike first, strike hard, strike to overwhelm. Where there is a battalion of Philippine Marines, China will send an entire army corp to overwhelm any opposition.

If she claims all of Spratlys, what then would stop her from claiming all of Philippines in the future? If she plays the UN's Law of the Sea policy.

tsk tsk tsk.   :-\

Philippines has a population that is over 92 million. Okay. That is 3 times the population of Canada. That is almost 1/3rd the population of America. That is 9 times the population of Sweden , as well as that of Denmark.

Yet the Philippine Military is weak? With a nation with a population of over 90 million, the AFP's numbers should be swelling.

It should have an army of 250,000 (not 120,000 like it does now)
It should have an air fleet of at least 10-15 American F-16s for air supremacy, air tactical support
It should have at least 2-3 missile frigates, supported by 4-5 missile corvettes and support ships.
It should also have anti-submarine warefare capabilities (considering its greatest threat, CHINA, is a Submarine Power (nuclear and standard))
It should also have an advanced air defense grid platform.

Nations such as Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand have these. Why do we not have it? Are we not at par with these other countries ?

~~

Philippine Government! Wake Up!

You guys can give 50 million pesos to generals like Angelo Reyes upon retirement but you cant buy missile air craft and missile craft for the defense of the WHOLE country?

:-\
#23711
Because of the internal corruption within the government, the Philippine Armed Forces have been deprived of state of the art national defense grids and weapons. To this day, the AFP still does not have any air supremacy fighters, no new missile frigates, no anti-submarine warefare capabilities.
All she has is an army that has been fighting with itself (insurgents) for the past 50 years.

If the governmente was not so corrupt, the AFP could have at least had acquired 4-5 American F-16s already. Station 1 F-16 in the north, the south, and two in the west. These could be supported by its tainer aircraft.

Right now, China could launch an air offensive and the Philippine Military could do nothing to stop it. Manila, Cebu, Iloilo, Davao, Cagayon De Oro, Tacloban, General Santos could be attacked and there would be no air protection. Let alone the navy is sparse and aging. It would be sunk by any CHinese frigate, and submarines if she ever decided to.

What the heck is the Philippine Government doing on our national defense? Where is our forward defense?!

MANILA, Philippines â€" The Department of National Defense (DND) is verifying reports that China has erected a new structure in the disputed Spratly Islands in the South China Sea and ordered the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to conduct aerial reconnaissance.

“We are going to verify this, but apparently these are old structures. So we are going to verify this just to be sure, we are going to send reconnaissance flight there,” DND spokesman Eduardo Batac told defense reporters in a press briefing.

The surveillance was ordered following reports the Chinese have built a lighthouse at Subi Reef, well within inside the disputed areas claimed by the Philippines, China and Vietnam.

The lighthouse was spotted during an aerial reconnaissance of the disputed area last October. The structure, built on a reef, is 20×20 meters in size and is equipped with parabolic antennas and a dome.

“These structures were there before the declaration of conduct of parties in the South China Sea in 2002 .  . . so (these are)old structures. But in the meantime the decision or what we need (to do) is to verify this,” Batac explained.

The DND spokesman also said the lighthouse cannot be considered a military facility.

“That’s an aid  to maritime navigation (but) it is also (a) means by which countries can lay claim to that kind of territories, it can be considered proof of ownership . . . but there are many who are claiming ownerships of these reefs and atolls in that area,” Batac said.

But if the reconnaissance does turn up evidence of new structures, Batac said the matter would be the jurisdiction of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).

“We’ll have to coordinate with DFA because anything that would require international relationships will have to be coursed through the DFA and we cannot do any unilateral action on that,” Batac said.

Meanwhile, the military is denying it was the source of the photographs of the allegedly new structures, which were posted on several online new sites Wednesday.

“It did not come from us, it’s not from our source . . . this one did not came from us,” Air Force spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Miguel Ernesto Okol told defense reporters.

However, he acknowledged they conduct regular reconnaissance over the disputed island chain, which is more than 500 kilometers west of Palawan and is reputed to be rich in mineral and gas resources.

Of all the claimants to the Spratlys, the Philippines has the weakest military.

at the end of the day, useless gihapon ilang pagka superpower kay pobre gihapon most of their citizens because only very few people are rich. Much like in the Philippines

You have a strong point, eric. Right now, China's middle class is growing. The last time i read, she has an estimated 300 million people who composed the upper-middle class. Which in itself is a feat (since America's entire population is ~ 305 million). But China has a long way to go until it reaches it zenith. Meaning China will still be modernizing for a longer time. Yes, China has over 300 million people that composes its upper middle class- upper class, but that leaves about 1 Billion who are working/ lower middle class.

The fear here is the rising Chinese consumerism. China is growing, industrializing and progressing. Her middle class ranks are growing. And with this growth, comes in consumption of raw natural resources. As China grows, she will continue to increase her consumption of natural gas, petroleum, methane, coal etc.

There will be a time, in the future, when China's military will defend its natural interest, which could be the acquisition of raw, rich natural resources.

The problem here is that if China becomes a regional hegemon, there will be no power in the region that can counter her clout (military, and economic) if ever an occasion arises where She (China) would invade another country for resources. With over 1.3 Billion people at her disposal, she could swallow her neighbours and incorporate it as part of a 'Greater China'. Very easily.

i can only hope that it doesn't bully its smaller neighbors.  my only concern as a filipino is its insistence on claiming all of the spratlys, saying that such claim is historically based, while our claim is only part of the island chain, within the existing UN Convention on the Law of the Sea that stipulates that a country owns the sea and the resources thereof, including the seabed and rocks or islets, within 200 miles of its territory, which is the location of the kalayaan islands (the particular islands that our country claims; not the whole spratlys chain).

should china bully its way through and prevail in its claim of all of the spratlys, what would keep it from claiming the philippines as well, using the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea if it serves its interests, because if all of the spratlys go to china it would mean that the philippines is within 200 miles of chinese territory?

i shudder to think of a malevolent superpower.  i'd rather have the u.s., hands down.  you know, like they say, we'd rather have a bastard that we know than a bastard that we don't know.

China did not honor the former MacMahon Line, which the British drew that separated British India and Qing China. The People's Republic of China repudiated the MacMahon Line when she invaded India's Arunchal Pradesh in 1962, thereby starting the Sino-Indian War. The war was quick as it was decisive. It was a swift Chinese victory, as China overwhelmed and took the offensive, routing the Indian defense and thereby claiming what it held as 'historical territory'.

By doing this, China effectively silenced India's former compaints of Chinese take over of the former Tibetan State. China invaded India proper, and won.

The Chinese also later invaded Vietnam in 1979 after the Vietnamese government invaded Beijing-backed Khmer Rouge. The Chinese pulverized Vietnam's Northern border provinces and disciplined Vietnam in what Beijing claimed as a "warning against further encroaching".

Be it as it may, thank God Philippines is not in the Asian land continent. With how weak the Philippine Military is right now; its focused more on fighting itself (combating insurgents and separatists) than foreign invasion, there is no way the Philippines could even defend itself from a Chinese invasion.

The nation, Philippines, would be swallowed if such an invasion took place. And it would be made a 'Chinese extraterritorial province'.

The Chinese Province of Guangdong has a greater population than Philippines. China has 22 provinces. On average, the population of 1 Chinese province is equivalent to 2-3 nations.

hehe it brings to light the message from Matthew Chapter 6!!

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?  28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

That night, those two young men who steered me and many others to safety, and directed our escape in the underpass. I have a feeling that they were indeed Angels. I remember one man. He had the brightest, most beautiful blue eyes. Dark brown hair. And such a very comforting and reassuring voice.

He knocked on my window, as i was in my car praying the rosary (and worried, because the snow was literally covering my car tires already).

As i was praying, those two young men knocked on my window.

I do believe they were Angels. In the guise of man. :)

Isles. I do feel for you and the people.

On February the 3rd, 2011, the city of Chicago was hit with the largest snow storm the city had experienced in almost 100 years. The city, in a day's time, was hit about 4 feet of snow. That's the background.

Now let me tell you (and the rest of tubag bohol dot com) a personal story that intertwines my experience with that of the rest of the city.

During the storm, the main highway that cuts through the city, which runs and connects northern chicago with southern chicago, Lake Shore Drive (North and South) was pummeled by snow. The high way, which is located near the lake, was hit by not only 4 feet of snow but freezing wind chills that came from the lake. The highway was closed. And this included all the cars in it. Literally, thousands of cars and thousands of people were stuck in their cars with no help for hours. It was hard because the city staff and emergency personnel were being utilized during the snow storm as there were emergencies all around the city.

I literally was driving back from the hospital to home. After a 12 hour work shift. I was so tired. Then i was stuck in the highway by S. Fullerton Expressway for almost 6 hours. Then as i was waiting, and praying to God for help, a man and group of people were directing those who had SUVs/ Trucks out of the highway by telling us to go through the underpasses. Tho it was the opposite direction.

I put my Mitsubishi in 4 wheel drive / mountain climb mode and was able to slowly free myself from the snowy catacombs. I literally drove through the city , which was covered in 3-4 feet of snow. Police cars were stuck, Ambulances were tossed over, City Buses were flipped to the side, the whole city was dead and seemed deserted.

Chicago. The "Windy City". The third largest city in the United States and the financial capital of the Midwest. The city was Closed.

For 3 days the city was closed. By the time i got home (2 hour drive , tho only 5 mile distance) , i parked my car in a snow-filled roadway. The next morning, i went outside to see what happened. My car was covered literally with snow. Then temperatures fell to below freezing. -18 DEGREES Farenheit.

I found out in the news that the thousands of people that were stuck in Lake Shore Drive that night were rescued by emergency perssonel. And most of them were taken Sacred Heart Hospital (a catholic hospital) and other hospitals that were filled to the brim.

Amazingly. No casualties in the frozen highway.

I remember praying as i was driving back home. And He guided me home.

Prayer is the best tool when almost everything seems lost. :)

Seriously, can u tell me what love is??  :)

This is True Love:

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Inspiration & Hope / A true gift of love

"Can I see my baby?" the happy new mother asked.

When the bundle was nestled in her arms and she moved the fold of cloth to look upon his tiny face, she gasped.  The doctor turned quickly and looked out the tall hospital window.  The baby had been born without ears.

Time proved that the baby's hearing was perfect.  It was only his appearance that was marred.  When he rushed home from school one day and flung himself into his mother's arms, she sighed, knowing that his life was to be a succession of heartbreaks.

He blurted out the tragedy.  "A boy, a big boy...called me a freak."

He grew up, handsome for his misfortune.  A favorite with his fellow students, he might have been class president, but for that.  He developed a gift, a talent for literature and music.

"But you might mingle with other young people," his mother reproved him, but felt a kindness in her heart.

The boy's father had a session with the family physician...  "Could nothing be done?"

"I believe I could graft on a pair of outer ears, if they could be procured" the doctor decided.  Whereupon the search began for a person who would make such a sacrifice for a young man.

Two years went by.  One day, his father said to the son, "You're going to the hospital, son.  Mother and I have someone who will donate the ears you need.  But it's a secret," said the father.

The operation was a brilliant success, and a new person emerged. His talents blossomed into genius, and school and college became a series of triumphs.

Later he married and entered the diplomatic service.  One day, he asked his father, "Who gave me the ears?  Who gave me so much?  I could never do enough for him or her."

"I do not believe you could," said the father, "but the agreement was that you are not to know...not yet."

The years kept their profound secret, but the day did come.  One of the darkest days that ever pass through a son.  He stood with his father over his mother's casket.  Slowly, tenderly, the father stretched forth a hand and raised the thick, reddish brown hair to reveal the mother had no outer ears.

"Mother said she was glad she never let her hair be cut," his father whispered gently, "and nobody ever thought mother less beautiful, did they"?

      REMEMBER...

Real beauty lies not in the physical appearance,
      but in the heart.
Real treasure lies not in what can be seen,
      but what cannot be seen.
Real love lies not in what is done and known,
but in what that is done but not known.

Inspiration & Hope / Red Marbles
March 12, 2011, 05:45:39 AM
This story was sent to me via a very good friend. Enjoy!

:)

I was at the corner grocery store buying some early potatoes.

I noticed a small boy, delicate of bone and feature, ragged but clean, hungrily appraising a basket of freshly picked green peas. I paid for my potatoes but was also drawn to the display of fresh green peas. I am a pushover for creamed peas and new potatoes. Pondering the peas, I couldn't help overhearing the conversation between Mr. Miller (the store owner) and the ragged boy next to me.

"Hello Barry, how are you today?"

"H'lo, Mr. Miller. Fine, thank ya. Jus' admirin' them peas. They sure look good."

"They are good, Barry. How's your Ma?"

"Fine. Gittin' stronger alla' time."

"Good.

Anything I can help you with?"

"No, Sir. Jus' admirin' them peas."

"Would you like to take some home?" asked Mr. Miller.

"No, Sir. Got nuthin' to pay for 'em with."

"Well, what have you to trade me for some of those peas?"

"All I got's my prize marble here."

"Is that right?

Let me see it" said Miller.

"Here 'tis. She's a dandy."

"I can see that. Hmmmmm, only thing is this one is blue and I sort of go for red. Do you have a red one like this at home?" the store owner asked.

"Not zackley but almost."

"Tell you what. Take this sack of peas home with you and next trip this way let me look at that red marble" . Mr. Miller told the boy.

"Sure will. Thanks Mr. Miller."

Mrs. Miller, who had been standing nearby, came over to help me.

With a smile she said, "There are two other boys like him in our community, all three are in very poor circumstances
Jim just loves to bargain with them for peas, apples, tomatoes, or whatever. When they come back with their red marbles, and they always do, he decides he doesn't like red after all and he sends them home with a bag of produce for a green marble or an orange one, when they come on their next trip to the store."

I left the store smiling to myself, impressed with this man.

A short time later I moved to Colorado, but I never forgot the story of this man, the boys, and their bartering for marbles.

Several years went by, each more rapid than the previous one. Just recently I had occasion to visit some old friends in that Idaho community and while I was there learned that Mr. Miller had died. They were having his visitation that evening and knowing my friends wanted to go, I agreed to accompany them. Upon arrival at the mortuary we fell into line to meet the relatives of the deceased and to offer whatever words of comfort we could

Ahead of us in line were three young men. One was in an army uniform and the other two wore nice haircuts, dark suits and white shirts...all very professional looking. They approached Mrs. Miller, standing composed and smiling by her husband's casket. Each of the young men hugged her, kissed her on the cheek, spoke briefly with her and moved on to the casket.

Her misty light blue eyes followed them as, one by one, each young man stopped briefly and placed his own warm hand over the cold pale hand in the casket. Each left the mortuary awkwardly, wiping his eyes.

Our turn came to meet Mrs. Miller. I told her who I was and reminded her of the story from those many years ago and what she had told me about her husband's bartering for marbles. With her eyes glistening, she took my hand and led me to the casket.

"Those three young men who just left were the boys I told you about. They just told me how they appreciated the things Jim "traded" them. Now, at last, when Jim could not change his mind about color or size....they came to pay their debt."

"We've never had a great deal of the wealth of this world," she confided, "but right now, Jim would consider himself the richest man in Idaho ."

With loving gentleness she lifted the lifeless fingers of her deceased husband. Resting underneath were three exquisitely shined red marbles.

The Moral :
We will not be remembered by our words, but by our kind deeds.

Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath.

Gage’s case, therefore, had confirmed Ferrier’s findings that damage to the prefrontal cortex could result in personality changes while leaving other neurological functions intact. Gage’s case is one of the very first which provides evidence that the frontal cortex is involved in personality. Today, the role of frontal cortex in social cognition and executive function is relatively well established; however, this area of research is yet to blossom, and neuroscientists know little more about the relationship between the mind and the brain than did the early neurologists of the 19th century.

So, what of Phineas Gage himself? Unable to return to his previous job as a foreman after his accident, Gage is said to have travelled around New England, and even to Europe, with his tamping iron trying to earn money. It is also said that he even displayed himself as a curiosity at Barnum’s Circus in New York. However, the story of Phineas Gage is as much folklore as it is fact. Not only the exact nature of the neurological damage Gage sustained, but also the details of his life after the accident, are disputed to this day.

It is known that, from 1851 until just before his death, Gage worked as a coach driver, first in a livery stable at the Dartmouth Inn, in Hanover, New Hampshire, for about 18 months, and then in Chile for some 7 years. At some point in 1859, with his health deteriorating, Gage went to live with his mother. He died in San Francisco on 20th May, 1860, some 13 years after his accident, of complications arising as a result of epileptic convulsions. An autopsy on Gage’s brain was not conducted.

In 1867, Gage’s body was exhumed from its burial place in San Francisco’s Lone Mountain Cemetery. Gage’s brother-in-law took the skull and the tamping iron to Dr. Harlow, who was then living in Woburn, Massachusetts. They are now housed in the Warren Anatomical Museum at Harvard University School of Medicine.

Phineas Gage (1823-1860) is one of the earliest documented cases of severe brain injury. Gage is the index case of an individual who suffered major personality changes after brain trauma. As such, he is a legend in the annals of neurology, which is largely based on the study of brain-damaged patients.

Gage was foreman of a crew of railroad construction workers who were excavating rocks to make way for the railroad track. This involved drilling holes deep into the boulders and filling them with dynamite. A fuse was then inserted, and the entrance to the hole plugged with sand, so that the force of the explosion would be directed into the boulder. This was done with a crow bar-like tool called a tamping iron.

On 13th September, 1848, 25-year-old Gage and his crew were working on the Rutland and Burlington Railroad near Cavendish in Vermont. Gage was preparing for an explosion by compacting a bore with explosive powder using a tamping iron. While he was doing this, a spark from the tamping iron ignited the powder, causing the iron to be propelled at high speed straight through Gage’s skull. It entered under the left cheek bone and exited through the top of the head, and was later recovered some 30 yards from the site of the accident.

The doctor who later attended to him, John Martin Harlow, later noted that the tamping iron was found “several rods [1 rod= 5.02m] behind him, where it was afterward picked up by his men smeared with blood and brain”. The tamping iron was 3 ft. 8 inches in length and 1.25 inches in diameter at one end, not 1.25 inches in circumference, as reported in the newspaper report on the left. It tapered at one end, over a distance of about 1 ft., to a blunt end 0.25 inches in diameter, and weighed more than 6 kg.

Whether or not Gage lost consciousness is not known, but, remarkably, he was conscious and able to walk within minutes of the accident. He was then seated in an oxcart, on which he was transported three-quarters of a mile to the boarding house where he was staying. Here, he was attended to by Harlow, the local physician. At the boarding house, Harlow cleaned Gage’s wounds by removing small fragments of bone, and replaced some of the larger skull fragments that remained attached but had been displaced by the tamping iron. He then closed the larger wound at the top of Gauge’s head with adhesive straps, and covered the opening with a wet compress. Gage’s wounds were not treated surgically, but were instead left open to drain into the dressings.

Within a few days of his accident, one of Gage’s exposed brain became infected with a “fungus”, and he lapsed into a semi-comatose state. His family prepared a coffin for him, but Gage recovered. Two weeks after the accident, Harlow released 8 fluid ounces of pus from an abscess under Gage’s scalp, which would otherwise have leaked into the brain, with fatal consequences. By 1st January 1849, Gage was leading an apparently normal life.

Harlow’s case report of Gage’s injuries appeared as a letter to the editor of the Boston Medical and Surgical Journal. The report of the “hitherto unparalleled case” contains few neurological details, and was at first met with skepticism, because it was thought that no-one could survive such an extreme injury. Harlow describes Gage’s injury as follows:

[The tamping iron] entered the cranium, passing through the anterior left lobe of the cerebrum, and made its exit in the medial line, at the junction of the coronal and sagittal sutures, lacerating the longitudinal sinus, fracturing the parietal and frontal bones extensively, breaking up considerable portions of the brain, and protruding the globe of the left eye from its socket, by nearly half its diameter.

Harlow goes on to describe how, while examining Gage, he determined that no bone fragments remained inside the skull:

…in searching to ascertain if there were other foreign bodies there, I passed in the index finger its whole length, without the least resistance, in the direction of the sound [of the hemorrhaging?] in the cheek, which received the other finger in like manner.

A second report was published in 1850 by Henry J. Bigelow, a professor of surgery at Harvard University. Bigelow emphasised Gage’s lack of symptoms, and reported that Gage was “quite recovered in faculties of body and mind”. Because of the disbelief with which Harlow’s 1848 report was met, it was, for the next 20 years, Bigelow’s account that came to be generally accepted by the medical community.

Thus, the damage to Gage’s frontal cortex had resulted in a complete loss of social inhibitions, which often led to inappropriate behaviour. In effect, the tamping iron had performed a frontal lobotomy on Gage, but the exact nature of the damage incurred to his brain has been a subject of debate ever since the accident occurred. This is because the damage can only be inferred from the path of the tamping iron through Gage’s skull, which in turn can only be inferred from the damage to the skull.

Gage’s skull was damaged in three places: there is a small wound under the left zygomatic arch (cheek bone) where the tamping iron entered; another is located in the orbital bone in the base of the skull behind the orbit of the eye; and the third, and largest, wound is in the top of the skull, where the tamping iron exited. The exit wound was enormous, and never healed. It can be seen today in Gage’s as an irregularly-shaped triangular hole, about 2 inches wide and 4 inches in circumference, and another, nearly 3 inches in circumference. These are separated by one of the flaps of skull that was replaced by Harlow upon arriving at Gage’s boarding house. Because the circumference of the wound in the frontal bone is much larger than the maximum diameter of the tamping iron, it is difficult to determine precisely the trajectory of the iron and where it exited Gage’s skull.

In 1994, Hannah Damasio and her colleagues at the University of Iowa used neuroimaging techniques to reconstruct Gage’s skull. The conclusion of this study was that Gage incurred damage to both the left and right prefrontal cortices. But according to computer-generated three-dimensional reconstructions of a thin slice computed tomography scan of Gage’s skull performed by Liebert et al (see image and film clip above), the damage to Gage’s brain was limited to the left hemisphere.

Nevertheless, the case of Phineas Gage made important contributions to early modern neurology. The opposition to Harlow’s 1848 report was due in no small part to the popularity of phrenology at that time. The publication of Harlow’s 1868 report of Gage’s personality changes was significant, as it coincided with reports from other neurologists of the effects of specific lesions on behaviour.

This was a time when the death throes of phrenology overlapped with the birth of modern neuropsychology. In 1865, Paul Broca (1824-1880) described the speech centre in the left hemisphere of right-handed people; that brain region, in the inferior frontal gyrus, is now known as Broca’s area. Also in the 1860s, John Hughlings-Jackson (1835-1911) and David Ferrier carried out (1843-1928) physiological studies which pointed to the localization of cerebral function.

Jackson had been the first to hypothesize that psychopathological conditions could be correlated to brain damage. He also localized the auditory cortex and in 1864, confirmed Broca’s findings that, in right-handed people, speech was localized to a specific area of the left temporal lobe. Ferrier, an early proponent of the localization of cerebral function, used Gage’s case as the highlight of his famous Goulstonian lecture in 1878. In the same lecture, he also described experiments on monkeys, which led him to the conclusion that:

There are certain regions in the cortex to which definite functions can be assigned; and that the phenomena of cortical lesions will vary according to their seat and also to their character…removal or destruction…of the antero-frontal lobes is not followed by any definite physiological results…And yet, notwithstanding this apparent absence of physiological symptoms, I could perceive a very decided alteration in the animal’s character and behaviour, while it is difficult to state in precise terms the nature of the change…while not actually deprived of intelligence, they had lost, to all appearance, the faculty of the attentive and intelligent observation [Regarding the trajectory of the tamping iron through Gage's brain]…the absence of paralysis in this case is quite in harmony with the results of experimental physiology.

Dextrocardia is a condition in which the heart is pointed toward the right side of the chest instead of normally pointing to the left. It is present at birth (congenital).

Dimiao is located on the southern coast of the province. How it got its name is not known It is one of the oldest municipalities which had a population of 8,820 in 1897. This town used to occupy a large territory which included Valencia and Lila. Later, Valencia was separated from Dimiao because of increased population and Lila was made and independent municipality on January 1, 1915.

Murag Empire man diay ning Dimiao sa una. British Empire diay ni sija. Valencia is like the US Thirteen Colonies and Lila is the Dominion of Canada. :)

Thanks for the history, Mike.
