Medina's signature at the bottom of the second panel shows a date marked as "PMJR0313"

A day before the controversial comic strip was published, Inquirer published a Pugad Baboy strip criticizing those who are praising former president Ferdinand Marcos for supposedly being the best president of the Philippines. Other Pugad Baboy strips can be viewed here.

In a subsequent Facebook post, Medina also revealed that the Pugad Baboy strip that appeared Thursday, June 6, was supposed to have been published earlier on June 4.

"Akala ko na-reject dahil bumunot sila sa archives ng ipapalit na strip at 'yon pang St. Scho na strip na lumabas noon pang March and ipinalit,"Medina said in his Facebook account. (I thought it was rejected because they used a strip from the archives and it had to be the St Scho strip that appeared way back in March that was chosen as replacement.)

But fans of Pugad Baboy need not protest just yet. Medina has clarified he has not been fired, just suspended, until a consensus is reached on the matter.

Pol Medina Jr reacts: 'Cons-pig-racy?'

For the author, however, Inquirer's decision to temporarily suspend his comic strip may not only concern the particular strip.

In reaction to the news, Medina wrote on Facebook:

"if you zoom in on that particular strip that got me fired, you'll see that the strip first appeared in MARCH. no reaction then. it was reissued after i made a series of anti-marcos strips, then BOOM! nag-trending sa twitter. interesting. i smell a consPIGracy…."

The school said they are seeking an audience with the person in charge of the Comics section and Medina himself.

Their statement read: "If we will not hear from PDI this week, the lawsuit will be filed. If the dialogue will be arranged, we will be inviting administrators, faculty and students who care about this issue to join us. The entire Sisters community will be present."

St Scho threatens lawsuit

In a statement posted on its official Twitter account on Wednesday, the management of St Scholastica College said it sent a letter to the Inquirer on the day the comic strip was published to protest "in the strongest possible terms the way the school was singled out" and how their Sister-administrators were "accused of allowing homosexual relationships between its female students."
#22706
It went on to name a particular school in the last panel of the strip, drawing public ire. It read:

"O' nga no? Sa St Scho e wala kang makikitang magandang kulasa na walang girlfriend." (That's right, eh? In St Scho, you won't find a pretty St Scholastican without a girlfriend.)

"Di kaya tongril din yung mga madre?" (Maybe the nuns are also lesbians?)

First published in the Philippine Daily Inquirer in 1988, Pugad Baboy (pigpen) is known for its satire on Philippine society and politics, using pig-like characters.

It will be removed from the Inquirer's roster of daily comics pending investigation.

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Daily Inquirer is suspending publication of Pugad Baboy from its Comics section over a strip criticizing the supposed hypocrisy of Christians on the issue of homosexuality.

The comic strip in question by cartoonist Apolonio "Pol" Medina Jr appeared on inquirer.net on Monday, June 3. It depicted two characters talking about how hypocritical it is for Christians to denounce homosexuality when gays and lesbians are tolerated in Catholic all-girls schools.

A 66-year-old who lived his whole life as a man was given a surprising diagnosis after visiting the doctor in Hong Kong with a swollen abdomen -- he was a woman.

Doctors realised the patient was female after they found the swelling came from a large cyst on an ovary, the Hong Kong Medical Journal reported.

The condition was the result of two rare genetic disorders.

The subject had Turner syndrome, which affects girls and women and results from a problem with the chromosomes, with characteristics including infertility and short stature.

But he also had congenital adrenal hyperplasia, increasing male hormones and making the patient, who had a beard and a "micropenis", appear like a man.

"Were it not due to the huge ovarian cyst, his intriguing medical condition might never have been exposed," seven doctors from two of the city's hospitals wrote in the study published Monday.

The 1.37 meters (4.5 feet) tall patient, who grew up as an orphan, was found to have no testes, a history of urinary leakage since childhood, and stopped growing after puberty at the age of 10.

The doctors said there have been only six cases where both genetic disorders have been reported in medical literature. Turner Syndrome on its own affects only one in 2,500 to 3,000 females.

The Vietnam-born Chinese patient decided to continue "perceiving himself as having a male gender with the possible need of testosterone replacement," according to the journal.

Most men have a X and a Y chromosome and most women have a pair of X chromosomes. But people with Turner Syndrome tend to have only one X chromosome or are missing part of their second X chromosome.

Conclusion

Trading like George Soros is not for the faint of heart or the light of wallet. The downside of betting big and winning big is betting big and losing big. If you can't afford to take the loss, you can't afford to bet like Soros. While most global macro hedge fund traders are relatively quiet types, avoiding the spotlight while they earn their fortunes, Soros has taken very public stances on a host of economic and political issues.

His public stance and spectacular success put Soros largely in a class by himself. Over the course of more than three decades, he made the right moves nearly every time, generating legions of fans among traders and investors, and legions of detractors among those on the losing end of his speculative activities.

8)
#22719
Governments lived in fear that Soros would take an interest in their currencies. When he did, other speculators joined the fray in what's been described as a pack of wolves descending on a herd of elk. The massive amounts of money the speculators could borrow and leverage made it impossible for the governments to withstand the assault.

Despite his masterful successes, not every bet George Soros made worked in his favor. In 1987, he predicted that the U.S. markets would continue to rise. His fund lost $300 million during the crash, although it still delivered low double-digit returns for the year.

He also took a $2 billion hit during the Russian debt crisis in 1998 and lost $700 million in 1999 during the tech bubble when he bet on a decline. Stung by the loss, he bought big in anticipation of a rise. He lost nearly $3 billion when the market finally crashed.
#22720
He made a similar move with Asian currencies during the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis, participating in a speculative frenzy that resulted in the collapse of the baht (Thailand's currency). These trades were so effective because the national currencies the speculators bet against were pegged to other currencies, meaning that agreements were in place to "prop up" the currencies in order to make sure that they traded in a specific ratio against the currency to which they were pegged.

When the speculators placed their bets, the currency issuers were forced to attempt to maintain the ratios by buying their currencies on the open market. When the governments ran out of money and were forced to abandon that effort, the currency values plummeted.
#22721
Major Trades

George Soros will always be remembered as "the man who broke the Bank of England." A well-known currency speculator, Soros does not limit his efforts to a particular geographic area, instead considering the entire world when seeking opportunities. In September of 1992, he borrowed billions of dollars worth of British pounds and converted them to German marks.

When the pound crashed, Soros repaid his lenders based on the new, lower value of the pound, pocketing in excess of $1 billion in the difference between the value of the pound and the value of the mark during a single day's trading. He made nearly $2 billion in total after unwinding his position.
#22722
Housing prices provide an interesting example of his theory in action. When lenders make it easy to get loans, more people borrow money. With money in hand, these people buy homes, which results in a rise in demand for homes. Rising demand results in rising prices. Higher prices encourage lenders to lend more money. More money in the hands of borrowers results in rising demand for homes, and an upward spiraling cycle that results in housing prices that have been bid up way past where economic fundamentals would suggest is reasonable. The actions of the lenders and buyers have had a direct influence on the price of the commodity.

An investment based on the idea that the housing market will crash would reflect a classic Soros bet. Short-selling the shares of luxury home builders or shorting the shares of major housing lenders would be two potential investments seeking to profit when the housing boom goes bust.
#22723
Soros' Philosophy

George Soros is a short-term speculator. He makes massive, highly-leveraged bets on the direction of the financial markets. His famous hedge fund is known for its global macro strategy , a philosophy centered around making massive, one-way bets on the movements of currency rates, commodity prices, stocks, bonds, derivatives and other assets based on macroeconomic analysis.

Simply put, Soros bets that the value of these investments will either rise or fall. This is "seat of the pants" trading, based on research and executed on instinct. Soros studies his targets, letting the movements of the various financial markets and their participants dictate his trades. He refers to the philosophy behind his trading strategy as reflexivity . The theory eschews traditional ideas of an equilibrium-based market environment where all information is known to all market participants and thereby factored into prices. Instead, Soros believes that market participants themselves directly influence market fundamentals, and that their irrational behavior leads to booms and busts that present investment opportunities.

Did you know that a $1,000 investment with George Soros in 1969, would have been worth more than $4 million by now? This maverick hedge fund manager generated significant annual returns, after management fees. His flagship Quantum Fund is revered by investors. Despite the animosity generated by his trading tactics and the controversy surrounding his investment philosophy, George Soros spent decades at the head of the class among the world's elite investors. In 1981, Institutional Investor magazine named him "the world's greatest money manager."

The Bottom Line

Human psychology is a dangerous thing, and there are some alarmingly standard mistakes that people make again and again. It is very easy in the heat of the moment, or when subject to stress or temptation, to fall into one of these mind traps. The wrong perceptions, self-delusion, frantically trying to avoid realizing losses, desperately seeking the comfort of other victims, shutting out reality and more can all cost you dearly. Be aware of the nature of these traps and always be honest and realistic with yourself. Furthermore, seek advice from competent and knowledgeable people of integrity who will bring you back to reality before it is too late.

8)
#22727
Superiority Trap

For some people, the superiority trap is extremely dangerous. A lot of investors think they know better than the experts or than the market. Just being well educated and/or clever does not mean you don’t need good independent advice and, even more so, it does not mean you can outwit the pros and a complex system of markets. Many investors have lost a fortune through being convinced that they were better than the rest. Furthermore, these people are easy prey for some of the other traps mentioned above.

There are (and have always been) professors of finance at the best universities who really are brilliant technically, and this can delude them into thinking that the pickings are easy out there in the real world. Some really do cut it, but others are in for a rude awakening beyond the ivory tower. Odd as it may sound, someone with a Ph.D. in finance may in fact lead you in the wrong direction (too calculating, too confident), while someone with no more than a high school diploma may have an amazing feel for the market and make a fortune.
#22728
Relativity Trap

The relativity trap is also there waiting to lead you astray. Everyone has a different psychological make-up, combined with a unique set of circumstances extending to work, family, career prospects and likely inheritances. This means that although you need to be aware of what others are doing and saying, their situation and views are not necessarily relevant outside their own context.

Be aware, but beware too! You must invest for yourself and only in your own context. Your friends may have both the money and the risk-friendliness to speculate in pork belly futures (as in the movie "Trading Places"), but if you are a modest earning and nervy person, this is not for you.
#22729
Blindness

Situational blindness can exacerbate the situation. Even people who are not specifically seeking confirmation often just shut out the prevailing market realties in order to do nothing and postpone the evil day when the losses just have to be confronted. If you know deep down that there is a problem with your investments, such as a major scandal at the company or market warnings, but you read everything in the newspaper apart from the financial pages, you are probably suffering from this blinder effect.
#22730
Confirmation Trap

Linked to the above is the confirmation trap. People often seek out others who have made, and are still making, the same mistake. Make sure you get objective advice from fresh sources, rather than phoning up the person who gave you the bad advice in the first place. If you find yourself saying something like, "our stocks have dropped by 30%, but it’s surely best just to hang onto them, isn’t it?" - you are seeking confirmation from some other unfortunate in the same situation. You can comfort each other in the short run, but it’s just self-delusion.
#22731
Sunk Costs

The sunk cost trap is just as dangerous. This is about psychologically (but not in reality) protecting your previous choices or decisions, which is often disastrous for your investments. It is truly hard to take a loss and/or accept that you made the wrong choices or allowed someone else to make them for you. But if your investment is no good, or sinking fast, the sooner you get out of it and into something more promising, the better.

If you clung to stocks that you bought in 1999 at the height of the dot.com boom, you would have had to wait a decade to break even, and that is for non-hi-tech stocks. It's far better not to cling to the sunk cost and to get into other assets classes that are moving up fast. Emotional commitment to bad investments just makes things worse.
#22732
Anchoring

Firstly, there is the so-called anchoring trap, which refers to an over-reliance on what one originally thinks. For instance, if you think of a certain company as successful, you may be too confident that its stocks are a good bet. This preconception may be totally incorrect in the prevailing situation or at some point in the future. For example, the German consumer electronics company Grundig, which was the major European supplier in the 1970s, was wiped out in the 1980s by competition from Japan. Those trapped in the perception that Grundig was there to stay, lost a lot of money.

In order to avoid this trap, you need to remain flexible in your thinking, and open to new sources of information and the reality that any company can be here today and gone tomorrow. Any manager can disappear too, for that matter.

Various authors have written on psychological or behavioral traps that lead people in the wrong direction with their lives in general. Sometimes, these books touch on financial matters, but that is certainly not their main focus. In this article, the intention is to apply some classic forms of dysfunctional psychology directly to the investment arena. We will take a look at some of the most common traps and how to avoid them.

The law is a “landmark piece of labor and social legislation that recognizes domestic workers as similar to those in the formal sector,” Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said.

“The purpose of the law is to not only protect substantial rights and provide better privileges, but also to prepare domestic workers to become more productive citizens of the land,” she added.

The law is also in fulfillment of the country’s obligation under a United Nations convention on the protection of domestic workers globally.

The Philippines was the second country to ratify the International Labor Organization Convention 189 last year.

The Senate and the House of Representatives meanwhile approved the Kasambahay Law in November. It was signed by President Benigno Aquino III on January 18.

Minimum wage for kasambahays is meanwhile set at P2,000 for chartered cities and first class municipalities and P1,500 for those in other municipalities.

Domestic workers’ salaries should also be paid in cash and not in any other means, and should be given directly to the kasambahays.

Meanwhile, benefits should include contributions to the Social Security System (SSS), housing fund Pag-IBIG and the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth).

Kasambahays should also be entitled to 13th month pay, and service incentives and leaves under the law.

Local household helpers may heave a sigh of relief, as the law aimed at giving them protection and better working conditions takes effect.

The “Kasambahay Law” or Republic Act 10361 has taken effect Tuesday, June 4, ushering in new rules in the employment of household help.

This includes a minumum wage payable in cash for all household service workers as well as the provision of comprehensive benefits packages.

Under the new law, household workers in Metro Manila should receive not less than P2,500 a month.

7 Powerful Quotes About Family that Will Make You Think

Family quotes. They encourage us, inspire and shine a light on areas of our lives that we may be too busy to see on a regular basis.

The days zoom by so fast you may feel as though you are front and center on your very own racetrack. It's easy to forget about the good things, the important things. I'm the first to admit that there are many times that I get so caught up with work, errands and chores that I don't have time to live in the moment with my own family. I look at the day after it's ended, when those little ones are asleep in their bed.

Quotes are nuggets of wisdom that tend to put us back on track. They refresh, rejuvenate and prepare us for a new day with a brand new outlook in place. Family IS the most important thing. - By Nadia Carriere

Most buses in the capital do not have security cameras so it is difficult for authorities to collect evidence of harassment, police officer Xing Wei was quoted as saying.

The heaviest penalty for sexual harassment is 15 days in detention, according to Xing.

Women have been guaranteed broad equal treatment under Chinese law since Mao Zedong, the founder of communist China, declared that women "hold up half the sky".

But despite that, women in China still face old-fashioned attitudes among many men and few women hold op jobs in government or business. (Reporting by Sally Huang; Editing by Terril Yue Jones and Robert Birsel)

BEIJING (Reuters) - Police in the Chinese capital have warned women not to wear miniskirts, hot pants or other skimpy clothing on buses and subways during the hot summer in order to avoid sexual harassment, Chinese media reported on Wednesday.

Women should also shield themselves with bags or newspapers, and sit or stand in lower areas rather than in raised seats to avoid being surreptitiously photographed, according to guidelines issued by the traffic department of the Beijing Public Security Bureau and cited by the official China Daily.

Women often complain of groping and other harassment in Beijing's crowded buses and subways.

It was back in 2010 when the Oscar winning actor revealed that he was battling stage-four throat cancer.

Olarte pointed out that HPV, when transferred to one's throat can cause cancer, and it can happen through oral sex.

"Connected ang HPV to throat cancer as is it is transferred in acts like oral sex," said Olarte.

Aside from throat cancer, Olarte said oral sex can also result to other sexually-transmitted infections like gonorrhea and syphilis.

He then called on the public to avoid engaging in oral sex especially with multiple partners.

"Prevention is always better than cure. It is very important not to have multiple sexual partners because it could lead to oral cancer and other sexually transmitted infections," Olarte said. (HDT/Sunnex)

MANILA -- Aside from men, females engaged in oral sex are also at high risk of having throat cancer.

This was the warning of the Philippine Medical Association (PMA) in response to the recent report that actor Michael Douglas got his cancer from his previous engagement of cunnilingus, which is a type of oral sex.

"Men can also be carriers of human papilloma virus (HPV) so women are also at risk of getting throat cancer if they do fellatio," said PMA president Dr. Leo Olarte in an interview.

Earlier in the week, a report from the British newspaper, the Guardian, came out quoting Douglas as saying the type of cancer that he has is actually caused by oral sex.

Douglas also told The Guardian that oral sex was a cure for his cancer, something Siegel considers humorous. "Saying that oral sex is also the 'cure' is a joke," Seigel said. "He is trying to tell you about courage in the face of illness."

Although the evidence for preventing throat cancer by getting vaccinated for HPV isn't clear, Siegel believes that every boy 15 and older should get vaccinated before he becomes sexually active.

Kraus agreed that both boys and girls should be vaccinated against HPV, but he added that there's not enough data to know how much vaccination might help when it comes to throat cancer. "This is a cancer associated with HPV," he said. "The question is whether vaccination will change the face of this disease -- that's not clear."

"We are living through an HPV epidemic," said Dr. Dennis Kraus, director of the Center for Head and Neck Oncology at North Shore- LIJ Cancer Institute in Lake Success, N.Y. "We used to think of throat and neck cancer as a disease of smokers and drinkers," he said, but the demographics have changed and it's increasingly become a sexually contracted disease.

The good news is that there is an 80 percent treatment response rate for this type of cancer, Siegel noted.

"It's much more responsive than any other throat cancer. If the cancer is due to smoking or alcohol, the ballgame is over practically. This is very responsive, which is why I'm not surprised to see that he's cured," Siegel said.

If a woman has HPV, then having oral sex is also a risk for infection, Siegel said. "It's most likely transmitted from females to males," Kraus noted.

Douglas was diagnosed with cancer in 2010 and underwent two months of chemotherapy and radiation. He remains cancer-free, but has checkups often to catch any recurrence, he told the paper.

Seigel said most adults are at risk of contracting HPV, and 80 percent of people will test positive for HPV infection within five years of becoming sexually active. The virus is also thought to cause the vast majority of cervical cancers, which is why U.S. health authorities have recommended that boys and girls get inoculated with the HPV vaccine.

Another expert agreed that HPV contracted through oral sex can trigger throat cancer.

Michael Douglas Blames His Cancer on Oral Sex
Experts say the claim is probably correct, because tumors caused by HPV virus much more responsive to treatment
By Steven Reinberg

MONDAY, June 3 (HealthDay News) -- Hollywood star Michael Douglas says oral sex caused his recent bout with throat cancer.

"Without wanting to get too specific, this particular cancer is caused by HPV, which actually comes about from cunnilingus," Douglas, 68, told the British newspaper The Guardian. He added that he has had real success beating back the tumor with chemotherapy and, "with this kind of cancer, 95 percent of the time it doesn't come back."

Douglas is also a longtime smoker, and was at one time a heavy drinker -- both behaviors are risk factors for throat cancer. But experts say it's not farfetched to think oral sex may have been a contributing factor.

"This is no surprise to anybody who studies infectious diseases," said Dr. Marc Siegel, an associate professor of medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center, New York City said. "There is a big increase in HPV-related cancers, and one of the main ones, if not the main one, is throat cancer."

Rodolfo Bunggal has surrendered ownership to Lim prior to the dog’s trip to the U.S., noting that the veterinarian is in a better position to take care of Kabang.

Bunggal nonetheless sent a thank you note via Care for Kabang to doctors, donors and others who helped his dog recover.

“Ako po si Rudy Bunggal na nagpapasalamat nang taos puso kay Ma’am Karen (Kenggot), Sir Rob (Warren) at sa mga staff ng UC Davis doctors na gumamot kay Kabang,” the handwritten note read.

Kenggot was the founder of Care for Kabang, while Warren is communications and marketing director at the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital.

“Maraming maraming salamat po sa inyong lahat at sa mga donors na tumulong sa pagdonate para mapagamot si Kabang,” he added.

Procedures included the removal of the dog’s two upper teeth, the reconstruction of an eyelid damaged during the accident and correction of the dog’s facial injury.

“Because it was not possible to reconstruct Kabang’s snout and a functional upper jaw, the energetic young dog will never look like she did before her accident,” UC Davis said.

“However, because the facial wound has been closed, she will be better protected against infection and prepared for an active life when she returns to her family in the Philippines,” it added.

Veterinarian Lim has earlier noted, however, that Kabang may no longer return to her original master whose daughter and niece he served.

She was brought to the hospital to UC Davis in October 2012 by veterinarian Anton Lim for a planned surgery to reconstruct her snout and upper jaw.

The trip and other costs were paid for by donations in a movement called “Care for Kabang,” which attracted sponsors from the Philippines and abroad.

Doctors had to treat Kabang for other illnesses before performing surgery, however, after discovering that she also had heartworm disease and an infectious cancer.

“We were able to treat all of the complications that arose with the best specialists available,” said Professor Frank Verstraete, an expert in veterinary dentistry and oral surgery, who led the team which treated Kabang.

The open area just above her mouth is her new nasal cavity.

Hero dog “Kabang” has been released from the veterinary medical teaching hospital at the University of California (UC) Davis, the school said in its website Tuesday. Although experts failed to reconstruct her face, the dog is now safe from further infections.

Kabang made headlines when she jumped in front of two girls about to be hit by a motorcycle in Zamboanga. The accident left a gaping wound on her face.

The UN investigators, in their report to the UN Human Rights Council on Tuesday, warned the conflict had reached new levels of brutality.

“The desperation of the parties to the conflict has resulted in new levels of cruelty and brutality, bolstered by an increase in the availability of weapons,” the experts said.

Government forces and allied militias had committed war crimes and crimes against humanity, the commission said, pointing to massacres, the besieging of towns and the use of cluster bombs and other imprecise munitions.

Rebel groups have also committed various war crimes, especially by abducting alleged government collaborators, the report added.

Commission member Carla Del Ponte, a former UN war crimes prosecutor, said in May that there were testimonies pointing to rebels using banned chemicals. But the commission said Tuesday there was “no compelling evidence” for this.

Sarin is a highly toxic agent, which affects the nervous system, overstimulation muscles and vital organs. In high doses, it can cause suffocation.

While Western powers had threatened possible intervention in the case of chemical weapons use they have balked at the growing prominence of an al-Qaeda affiliates on the rebel side.

Mr. Fabius said he had handed the results Tuesday to Ake Sellstrom, head of the UN fact-finding mission into possible chemical weapons use in Syria.

“It would be unacceptable that those responsible for these crimes go unpunished,” he said.

The UN Commission of Inquiry, in its report, did not identify the kind of materials it suspected had been used in attacks but did list four suspected incidents of their use.

Two attacks allegedly took place in Aleppo and Damascus provinces on March 19, the third in Aleppo city on April 13, and the fourth in Idlib province on April 29, the commission said.

“We must both react and at the same time not block the possible (Geneva) peace conference,” he said, adding France was talking with its partners, including the US and Britain, about the situation.

Both sides in the conflict have been accused of deploying chemical weapons, but most of the allegations have concerned al-Assad’s forces.

Le Monde newspaper last week reported that it had witnessed several toxic gas attacks against rebel forces in the Jobar district of Damascus in recent weeks.

The paper collected samples from doctors that treated victims, which were among those used in the government tests.

U.S. President Barack Obama had previously said that the use of chemical weapons would be a “red line” in the conflict, which could trigger a military intervention. Britain and France had echoed those warnings.

For Mr. Fabius, “a line has been crossed, without question.” In terms of a response, “all options are on the table,” he said.

They ranged from not reacting at all to a response “that includes the use of arms against the place where the gas is produced, where it is held, where it is stored,” he said.

Asked if that meant bombing regime facilities, he said: “We’re not there yet.” He also ruled out an immediate decision to arm the opposition.
