MANILA -- Aside from men, females engaged in oral sex are also at high risk of having throat cancer.

This was the warning of the Philippine Medical Association (PMA) in response to the recent report that actor Michael Douglas got his cancer from his previous engagement of cunnilingus, which is a type of oral sex.

"Men can also be carriers of human papilloma virus (HPV) so women are also at risk of getting throat cancer if they do fellatio," said PMA president Dr. Leo Olarte in an interview.

Earlier in the week, a report from the British newspaper, the Guardian, came out quoting Douglas as saying the type of cancer that he has is actually caused by oral sex.

It was back in 2010 when the Oscar winning actor revealed that he was battling stage-four throat cancer.

Olarte pointed out that HPV, when transferred to one's throat can cause cancer, and it can happen through oral sex.

"Connected ang HPV to throat cancer as is it is transferred in acts like oral sex," said Olarte.

Aside from throat cancer, Olarte said oral sex can also result to other sexually-transmitted infections like gonorrhea and syphilis.

He then called on the public to avoid engaging in oral sex especially with multiple partners.

"Prevention is always better than cure. It is very important not to have multiple sexual partners because it could lead to oral cancer and other sexually transmitted infections," Olarte said. (HDT/Sunnex)
