A scarecrow or hay-man is a decoy or mannequin in the shape of a human which is dressed in old clothes and placed in fields to discourage birds such as crows or sparrows from disturbing and feeding on recently cast seed and growing crops. (wikipedia)

"It's probably one of the worst things I've seen," Union Pacific Special Agent Sal Pina, who untied the animal from the tracks after the close call on April 2, said in a statement released Tuesday.

"I've never seen something like this," said Pina, who owns the same breed of dog.

Riverside officials said the dog was healthy and friendly. Although he made several TV appearances, he's no publicity hound; a vet tech takes him home every night to work on his timid temperament, officials said.

Hundreds of adoption offers from across the country poured in and officials said they expect Banjo -- named after old traffic signals found on some rail lines -- will have a new home by Monday.

Dog tied to railroad tracks saved by eagle-eyed engineer

By Tracy Connor, Staff Writer, NBC News

An elderly man who wanted to get rid of his dog tied the pooch to the train tracks, but his dastardly plan was foiled by an eagle-eyed engineer, according to authorities.

The railroad operator hit the emergency brakes and the 10-month-old poodle terrier mix -- nicknamed Banjo by animal-control officials in Riverside County, Calif. -- was saved.

His owner was detained but will not be charged with a crime because he may have dementia, officials said. He told investigators he didn't want the dog but didn't know what to do with him.

Like a veteran racehorse, Hubble is hitting its stride â€" but that hasn't always been the case. The first couple of years of operation were hampered by a flaw in the telescope's main mirror. Equipment to compensate for the problem was installed during a crucial series of spacewalks 20 years ago, in 1993. The shuttle Atlantis paid a final servicing visit to Hubble in 2009, and the telescope has been working just fine since then.

Hubble operations have been extended through 2016 â€" and if the telescope remains in good working order, it's likely to continue being funded at least until 2018, when the $8.8 billion James Webb Space Telescope is scheduled for launch. Eventually, Hubble will have to be sent down to a fiery doom. But who knows? Maybe the old telescope will hang around to experience life after 30.

The infrared glow, captured by Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3, lights up the nebula's clouds from within. Liske says it's "a fitting celebration of an incredible 23 years of the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope."

The Hubble team traditionally releases an eye-popping shot to celebrate the anniversary of the space telescope's launch on April 24, 1990. As part of this year's celebration, the Hubble Heritage Project asked astronomers around the world to send in their own Horsehead Nebula photos, and you can see the collection via Flickr and Tumblr.

Hubble celebrates 23 years on the job with a Horsehead of a different color

NASA / ESA / AURA / STScI
The Horsehead Nebula shines in a Hubble Space Telescope image that marks this month's 23rd anniversary of the orbiting observatory's launch.

By Alan Boyle, Science Editor, NBC News

Astronomers have come out with a Horsehead Nebula of a different color to celebrate the Hubble Space Telescope's 23rd birthday.

The iconic nebula in the constellation Orion, about 1,500 light-years away, can be seen even through small telescopes. In visible light, it's a dark dust cloud in the shape of a horse's head, silhouetted against a backdrop of glowing hydrogen gas. But the Horsehead takes on a completely different look in the new view released Friday.

"This image was taken in the infrared," Joe Liske, an astronomer from the European Southern Observatory, explains in a video introducing the picture. "In infrared light, we can pierce right through some of the bulky plumes of dusty material which usually mask and obscure the inner regions of the Horsehead. The result is this rather fragile-looking structure, made of delicate, wispy folds of gas â€" very different to the nebula's appearance in the visible."

Lynn Clay via WOOD TV
Lynn Clay grabbed her camera to snap a frame of the floodwaters outside one of the windows in her office building at the Riverfront Plaza in Grand Rapids, Mich., and captured a little fish swimming by. She didn't even realize the fish was in the frame until she looked at it later and, as even the most seasoned photographer will admit, she said, "I got lucky!"

Clay told NBCNews.com she has never seen the Grand River this high before. "The water is usually only 18 inches to 2 feet deep outside the building, but now it's probably 20 feet deep. It's up over the walkways, the roads, and up the buildings to the windows."

while framing my question i simultaneously viewed another window and caught something, lorenz.  the word does exist for things spiritual...

The condescension of the Savior may be traced back to premortal life, where He “was like unto God” (Abraham 3:24), and compared with God’s other spirit offspring, Christ was “more intelligent than they all” (3:19). Elder Neal A. Maxwell of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles explained, “In intelligence and performance, He far surpasses the individual and the composite capacities and achievements of all who have lived, live now, and will yet live!”[1] With no other premortal individual worthy or able to open the way of salvation for a mortal world (see Revelation 5:1â€"6), Jesus, the Lamb of God, volunteered, “Here am I, send me” (Abraham 3:27). Only He could fulfill the conditions required for the infinite Atonement. (http://rsc.byu.edu/)

thanks again, lorenz.  i will no longer agonize over this word. :)

Quote from: Lorenzo on April 22, 2013, 02:40:55 PMSt. Anthony, you are glorious for your miracles and for the condescension of Jesus Who came as a little child to lie in your arms. Obtain for me from His bounty the grace which I ardently desire. You were so compassionate toward sinners, do not regard my unworthiness. Let the glory of God be magnified by you in connection with the particular request that I earnestly present to you.

thanks, lorenz.  i have always been comfortable with this saint.  he's one of the best saints to intercede for lost things.  so thanks for this accessible novena.  but tell me again, is that really the word in the prayer?  pedestrian me is not comfortable with it because of its negative connotations.

But hair conformity is nothing new in North Korea. The Daily Mail reports that in 2005 state TV aired a five part series on haircut guidelines for today’s modern socialist lifestyle, and it seems the concept is reemerging under North Korea’s new leader. There are a couple theories as to why this mandate is in place, including that Kim is not a fan of previous styles. Perhaps he just wants to avoid having to grow a pompadour like his father’s.

Men are prohibited from growing their hair longer than 5 cm â€" less than 2 inches â€" while older men can get away with up to 7 cm (3 inches).
Oddly enough, the list falls short of including its young leader Kim Jong Un’s current look â€" a variation on the high-and-tight that may be too much of a power ‘do for North Korea’s non-elite.

The Telegraph reports that the world’s favorite hermit state is implementing state-sanctioned haircuts for men and women. Women are allowed to choose one of 14 styles; married women are instructed to keep their tresses short, while the single ladies are allowed let loose with longer, curlier locks. (We’re partial to no. 6 on the ladies’ list, which pays homage to the fabulous feathering that dominated so much of 1980s.)

John Kanive said he executed the photo-bomb, “just because I thought it was funny,” but it proved to have a more strategic advantage.

“It did create a lot of traffic to our ad,” he said

Less than 24 hours after the ad was posted, the apartment the Kanives have called home for three years was rented.

“I would say pretty much everybody that replied to the ad had something to say about the dog in the pictures, mostly like, ‘P.s., I love your dog,’” John Kanive said. (http://abcnews.go.com/)

Craigslist Ad Enhanced by Photobombing Dog

By Katie Kindelan
Mar 25, 2013

There was no need to include a “pet-friendly” mention in the description of a Chicago apartment for rent on Craigslist.

Instead, a four-legged pet with an eye for the camera turned the two-bedroom apartment’s ad on the popular website into a veritable game of “Where’s Waldo,” or, in this case, “Where’s Otis.”

Otis is the Great Dane-German Shepherd mix belonging to John, 29, and Sara, 28, Kanive, the Chicago couple who posted their $1,900 per month rental in the city’s Lakeview East neighborhood on Craigslist earlier this month.  The ad, describing the apartment’s “open layout” and “tall ceilings,” was your standard, run-of-the-mill posting had it not been for Otis photobombing each shot.
