A picture of Lolo Mariano when he was only 23 years old.
This was his entry immigration paper from the Empire of China to the Philippines (then an American territory).
This picture was taken in 1903.

his port of entry was Jolo, Philippines. he came to the Philippines with 3 of his brothers. one went to Cebu, one went to leyte and 2 (lolo and his brother) went to Bohol.

Even those we recognize as our public officials in Bohol are of chinese descent like the name Clarin, Butalid, Borja, Torralba or the Boholano hero Dah go Hoy is Chinese. The names of towns and barrios of Panglao Island are of Chinese origin like Dauis, Sung Ku Lan, Toh To Lan, Tang Nan, Beh king...etc...etc...

I did not know that the Borja Family were of Chinese ancestry. I know Mr. Eddie Borja (the Tagbilaran City Councilor); he is a very good friend of mine. My younger brother's maninoy is Atty. Abe Borja. Interesting.

I also did not know that the Torralba Family are part Chinese. Interesting.

My hometown, Valencia, is dominated by Chinese. The Lim Family have ruled Valencia for many years. The former Mayor and now current Vice Governor of Bohol, Dra. Concepcion Lim, is part Chinese. A very good family friend (good friend of my grandmother) and former Mayor, Dr. Plinio Lim is also part Chinese. (The two are of different parties tho; they are not allies in politics).

My Great Grandfather , Tan Ngai He (Mariano Tan), was a pure blooded Chinese who came to the Philippines in 1901. He was born and raised in the city of Guangzhou of the Province of Guangdong, China :)

I am a very big fan of Dr. Rizal. While many revolutionaries were philosophers, lawyers, military men (generals, admirals) and even persons of royalty, Jose Rizal was different in many ways.

His written word was more powerful than the sword, and his death rallied an enslaved nation to its throes. His death sparked the Philippine Revolution.

His chosen profession, of all things, was a physician. He was an ophthalmologist. :)

Then the LORD said to Moses, “See, I have chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, ability and knowledge in all kinds of crafts-
â€" Exodus 31:1-3

-----

What is interesting about Bezalel is that he was filled with the Spirit of God to build the tabernacle. When we think of people filled with the Spirit, does a builder come across your mind? How about an accountant? A doctor? A housewife? When we see the ramifications of Bezalel, we see that God’s anointing is not just for pastors on Sunday services or music, but God’s empowerment was meant for all areas of life. Find out what you are uniquely empowered by God to do, then do it with all your might.

Time is so precious -- time with our families, our children, our parents, our friends, as well as our brothers and sisters in Christ. How do you invest your time? Where do you invest it? You know, it's really more valuable than the money we invest. Once it's gone, it can't be reclaimed. So as you begin each day, ask God that you will be able to "know the time," to see it for what it is and to use it for its greatest good. Time passes quickly, and like the shadows of early evening, it's not long before it is absorbed into the gathering darkness of night.

Eternal God, please give me the wisdom to use the time given me today to do what is best, right, good, and profitable. I want to invest my time in what is truly enduring. Please help me use my time to influence and to bless all those with whom I interact so that they are brought closer to you. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Inspiration & Hope / Re: Smile makes life beautiful
April 14, 2011, 08:23:22 AM
Quote from: Scarb on December 21, 2007, 04:32:33 AM
If in our daily life we can smile, if we can be peaceful and happy,
not only we, but everyone will profit from it.
This is the most basic kind of peace work.

Because of your smile, you make life more beautiful.

Hope is important because it can make
the present moment less difficult to bear.
If we believe that tomorrow will be better, we can bear a hardship today.

We have more possibilities available in each moment than we realize.

There is no enlightenment outside of daily life.

Reconciliation is to understand both sides; to go to one side and describe
the suffering being endured by the other side,
and then go to the other side and describe the suffering being endured by the first side.

If you look deeply into the palm of your hand,
you will see your parents and all generations of your ancestors.
All of them are alive in this moment.
Each is present in your body.
You are the continuation of each of these people.

Harm no person, animal, plant or mineral.

Each and everyone one of us are going
through tough times right now and then, but God
is getting ready to bless you in a way that only He can.
Keep the faith.

prayer is powerful, and prayer is one of the best gifts we receive.
There is no cost but a lot of rewards.
Let's continue to pray for one another.

yes, a smile can really change an attitude. today, two filipinas made me smile during an interview.

I talked to my mother today. So my sister graduates her 2nd year this summer and is going back to Bohol with my mom for a month or so.
Lipay ko kaayo kai hapit na human ahong igsoon baji. Our dream of starting a Family-Owned Multi-Specialty Clinic is an inspiration for both of us. We also have to make sure to care for our 2 younger brothers when we are done. I particulary want to reduce the economic burden that is on my parents. I realize that being a doctor is quite hectic really. Professional requirements and then there are the personal requirements that lay on one's mind.

The financial burden of sending 2 children to medical school and then supporting them financially and emotionally is quite enormous. I am so very lucky to have such gracious parents. I can never forget about their sacrifices. Never.

I just found out that I have to do a 10 minute presentation on the Integumentary System this Friday. I'm presenting for a group of nursing students who asked me to teach more information on the Integumentary System-- particularly more so on disease pathology.

So I have to prepare some slides later today on power point for the presentation.

I am very happy to increase the breadth of nursing students' understanding of the integumentary system as what is taught in their curriculum. I actually approve of Medical Doctors/ Medical Interns role in further educating nursing staff on the body so as to increase the allied health professionals understanding. Team Orientation gud ta diri. :)

PS. I am being reimbursed for this so i'm also happy pood. haha

kujaw ang cardiothoracic surgeon.

these guys do 3-4 surgeries a day.

a. quadruple bypass costs ~ $85,000-$100,000 (a surgeon's professional fee is 1/2 of that amount)
b. colonoscopy costs ~ $2500 (surgeon's professional fee is 1/2 of that)
c. cardiac stent installation ~ $12,000- $15,000 (surgeon's professional fee is 1/2 of that)

in a given day, a cardiothoracic surgeon makes about an average ~ $20,000 - $50,000

In regards to this colorful thread and posts :

What is with the double standard ? It seems to me that alot of people put a negative connotation in being Filipina and marrying someone who is non-Filipino.

This is ridiculous. Not all Filipinas who marry foreigners do so to get away from the Philippines and to use the foreigner husband.

My aunt, who is a graduate of Southwestern University in Bachelor's in Nursing, came to America in the 1980s as a nurse (now she's a Trauma Nurse in Atlantic City as well as a School Nurse on the side) married my uncle Steve, who is not Filipino but an Irish-American. Both of them are nurses, and both of them met each other in the hospital. Both of them working, honest, hard working professionals.

There are THOUSANDS of Filipinas here in the United States who are educated professionals and marry foreigners because of similarities to one another.

Just because a Filipina comes back to the Philippines with her non-Filipino husband doesn't mean she married him for money. It could just mean that two people looked past their ethnic differences and fell in love with one another.

I know alot of Filipino guys who dated, and then married non-Filipinas. But no one seems to put so much emphasis on the pinoys marrying non-pinays.

Seriously. enough with this double standard. And even if some Filipinas marry foreigners to get out of the Philippines, its really none of our business. Diba?

Just my two cents.

no doctors back home who are at the forefront of rabies cases have advised us to have our daughter vaccinated for rabies even if she's not bitten.

i underwent a series of anti-rabies shots (5 in all) last christmas break because i was bitten by a puppy that we picked up (her mother was about to be executed).  i was to leave the country in four days' time, so there was no more 10-day observation period for what may happen to the puppy.  now i'm immune from rabies for two years.  i can actually bite you and your only fear would be tetanus. ;D

thats good, isles. just make sure you ask your little daughter if she has been bitten or not.

good to see that you've taken your rabies vaccine and rightly so considering your exposure to so many animals, given your fransiscan-esque love for animals.

ps. why would you want to bite me? you can hug me instead. :)

Always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

-Ephesians 5:20

LORD, thank you for all your instructions, for humbling me when i needed to be humbled, for inspiring me when needing inspiration, for encouraging me through family, friends and loved ones. For all the sweet, salty and sharp experiences in this life. May you always keep us grounded in your Love and in Your Word.

God Bless all of Us!

When dealing with pathogenic cases that can lead to devastating neurological sequelae, rabies for example, vaccination should be considered if exposed to a plethora of animal species and if unsure if said animals are up to date in their veterinary shots.

Rabies travels via retrograde transport. This makes it rather hard to treat and almost impossible if the disease has taken its full course.

because of this story and the fact that we have a good number of various pets at home, i had to tell our little daughter once again to never keep secret from us even the most minor of scratches from a cat or a dog.  all our pets go through annual deworming and a series of vaccinations, but any wound accidentally inflicted by them may still get infected, and i want to avoid that.

Is your daughter vaccinated for rabies? It might be something you and your husband should consider. Prophylactic initiative.

Filling up surgical consultation paper work is a pain in the arse. Anyways, the highlight of the day was assisting in a tracheotomy and in laparoscopic surgery today. Exciting.

I love surgery. The hours are not as long and work is not as repetitive as my last Internal Medicine Rotation.

Separation in the Hospital System/ Hospital Setting

I notice that in the cafeteria and even in the communal areas, there is a separation between professionals. I notice that nurses stay with nurses, doctors and medical interns with their own, respiratory technicians with other allied field technicians etc etc.

I wonder why?

Today during lunch, I decided to sit with some of the Filipina nurses and converse with them while eating. The nurses in the hospital wear red - colored scrubs while doctors and medical interns wear blue or green (surgery) scrubs and then white coats over. I guess because i wore a white coat and my green scrubs, the nurses saw me and stopped their conversation when I came to sit with them.

I decided to sit with my good friend Lulu, and Kuya Jon (a really good pinoy nurse whom i am friends with; the guy is from Bicol, but he speaks cebuano/bol-anon).

I asked them ngano nang quiet quiet man ang nursing staff when i was sitting with them. Dili kono normal nga mo lingkod ang mga doctors / medical iterns with the nursing staff sa cafeteria daw. doctors sit with doctors ra daw. It was kinda akward at first. But eventually the nurses started to talk to me afterwards.

I felt that I was an intruder, seriously, and i was happy to see that they opened up to me. Well at least the Pinoy/ Pinay nurses were conversationally active with me. :)

I don't believe in separation and sitting apart. I say all medical professionals should sit with each other. None of this superiority point of view. I mean, we're all in this health industry. We are a team.

Trying out my 'green' thumb. :P

So far, babycakes and I bought 8 different plants this weekend. Yucca plant, money tree, basil, thyme, mint, bamboo plants and more.
It's quite stress-relieving, actually. The planting-aspect. :)

2201 The conjugal community is established upon the consent of the spouses. Marriage and the family are ordered to the good of the spouses and to the procreation and education of children. the love of the spouses and the begetting of children create among members of the same family personal relationships and primordial responsibilities.

2202 A man and a woman united in marriage, together with their children, form a family. This institution is prior to any recognition by public authority, which has an obligation to recognize it. It should be considered the normal reference point by which the different forms of family relationship are to be evaluated.

2203 In creating man and woman, God instituted the human family and endowed it with its fundamental constitution. Its members are persons equal in dignity. For the common good of its members and of society, the family necessarily has manifold responsibilities, rights, and duties.

2149 Oaths which misuse God's name, though without the intention of blasphemy, show lack of respect for the Lord. the second commandment also forbids magical use of the divine name.

[God's] name is great when spoken with respect for the greatness of his majesty. God's name is holy when said with veneration and fear of offending him.

2142 The second commandment prescribes respect for the Lord's name. Like the first commandment, it belongs to the virtue of religion and more particularly it governs our use of speech in sacred matters.

2143 Among all the words of Revelation, there is one which is unique: the revealed name of God. God confides his name to those who believe in him; he reveals himself to them in his personal mystery. the gift of a name belongs to the order of trust and intimacy. "The Lord's name is holy." For this reason man must not abuse it. He must keep it in mind in silent, loving adoration. He will not introduce it into his own speech except to bless, praise, and glorify it.

2144 Respect for his name is an expression of the respect owed to the mystery of God himself and to the whole sacred reality it evokes. the sense of the sacred is part of the virtue of religion:

Are these feelings of fear and awe Christian feelings or not? . . . I say this, then, which I think no one can reasonably dispute. They are the class of feelings we should have - yes, have to an intense degree - if we literally had the sight of Almighty God; therefore they are the class of feelings which we shall have, if we realize His presence. In proportion as we believe that He is present, we shall have them; and not to have them, is not to realize, not to believe that He is present.75

2145 The faithful should bear witness to the Lord's name by confessing the faith without giving way to fear.76 Preaching and catechizing should be permeated with adoration and respect for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
