The Philippines could be dragged into a war in the South China Sea as part of the continuing dispute over the Spratly chain of islands, reports an Australian think-tank.

The report was issued after the United States Senate yesterday passed a resolution deploring China’s military assertiveness against the Philippines and Vietnam in the crowded sea lanes of the South China Sea.

Chinese authorities later responded to the resolution, saying third parties should not be involved in bilateral conflicts that should only be resolved between the parties involved.

China is locked in territorial disputes with the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia and Brunei over ownership of the Spratly Islands and the Paracel Islands, which are believed to be rich in oil and gas deposits.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton last week expressed concern over developments in the South China Sea. In a joint press conference with visiting Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto del Rosario, Clinton said the US opposed the use of force in that regional dispute.

“The United States does not take sides on territorial disputes over land features in the South China Sea, but we oppose the use of force or the threat of force to advance the claim of any party,” Clinton said.

The Philippines and the US are signatories in a Mutual Defense Treaty that mandates each side to come to the aid of the other when confronted with an external attack. Clinton said the US is now reviewing a Philippine request for military equipment that will help secure the Philippines’ sea borders.

“We are determined and committed to supporting the defense of the Philippines and that means trying to find ways of providing affordable material and equipment that will assist the Philippine military to take the steps to defend itself,” Clinton said.

The US and the Philippines will be holding maritime security exercises in the South China Sea this week. With a report from Rodney Jaleco, ABS-CBN North America Bureau

MANILA - Archbishop Emeritus Oscar Cruz said the number of annulment cases has declined by at least 10% to 15% over the years.

“I think it’s less than 10 to 15 percent as far as our cases here are concerned because there are also cases that go directly to Rome that do not pass by us,” said Cruz, based on a report by the CBCP News.

The former president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) said the majority of the cases are in Metro Manila.

He said, however, that couples are now opting to co-habilitate sans any contracts. “[This is] precisely because of the trend that if they do that, they could also part whatever time they like.”

“Marriage is more difficult here (Metro Manila) precisely because of the influence of the First World countries which allow divorce and same-sex marriage, among others,” he said.

Cruz is the judicial vicar of the National Appellate for Matrimonial Tribunal.

When you have a property to protect from intruders, a Rottweiler, Cane Corso or Doberman Pinscher looking like an outtake from a Jack Lemmon film might seem to fit the bill. However, you always have the option of taking the alternative approach and recruiting a guard donkey instead of a guard dog.

Guard donkeys can be trained to direct their herd-defending instincts against threats to the property with surprisingly effective results and are becoming recognized as a viable option to property protection and livestock security.

These “kick-ass” domestic defenders will fearlessly charge human and animal intruders before confronting them with carnivore-like snarls, bared incisor teeth and ready hooves. Stomping attacks will prevent future run-ins with livestock predators.

English Dictionary / Re: Burlesque
June 18, 2013, 03:22:49 PM
http://en.wikipedia.org/

Burlesque is a literary, dramatic or musical work intended to cause laughter by caricaturing the manner or spirit of serious works, or by ludicrous treatment of their subjects. The word derives from the Italian burlesco, which, in turn, is derived from the Italian burla â€" a joke, ridicule or mockery.

Burlesque overlaps in meaning with caricature, parody and travesty, and, in its theatrical sense, with extravaganza, as presented during the Victorian era. "Burlesque" has been used in English in this literary and theatrical sense since the late 17th century. It has been applied retrospectively to works of Chaucer and Shakespeare and to the Graeco-Roman classics. Contrasting examples of literary burlesque are Alexander Pope's sly The Rape of the Lock and Samuel Butler's irreverent Hudibras. An example of musical burlesque is Richard Strauss's 1890 Burleske for piano and orchestra. Examples of theatrical burlesques include W. S. Gilbert's Robert the Devil and the A. C. Torr â€" Meyer Lutz shows, including Ruy Blas and the Blasé Roué.

A later use of the term, particularly in the United States, refers to performances in a variety show format. These were popular from the 1860s to the 1940s, often in cabarets and clubs, as well as theatres, and featured bawdy comedy and female striptease. Some Hollywood films attempted to recreate the spirit of these performances from the 1930s to the 1960s, or included burlesque-style scenes within dramatic films, such as 1972's Cabaret and 1979's All That Jazz, among others. There has been a resurgence of interest in this format since the 1990s.

burlesque,  in literature, comic imitation of a serious literary or artistic form that relies on an extravagant incongruity between a subject and its treatment. In burlesque the serious is treated lightly and the frivolous seriously; genuine emotion is sentimentalized, and trivial emotions are elevated to a dignified plane. Burlesque is closely related to parody, in which the language and style of a particular author, poem, or other work is mimicked, although burlesque is generally broader and coarser.

"We are not, unless there is a big shift in position on his part, going to get a common position with him at the G8."

The United States said last week it would step up military aid to Syrian rebels - a move which officials said would involve supplying the Western-backed Supreme Military Council with automatic weapons, light mortars and rocket-propelled grenades.

The European Union has also dropped its arms embargo on Syria, allowing France and Britain to arm the rebels, though the two countries say they have no immediate plans to do so.

Obama and Putin are due to meet at about 6:30 pm local time at the Lough Erne golf resort about 10 km (7 miles) outside the Northern Irish town of Enniskillen, scene of an IRA bomb attack in 1987 that killed 11 people.
#22163
But as G8 leaders gathered at a resort in Northern Ireland, Russia said it would not permit no-fly zones to be imposed over Syria.

"I think we fundamentally would not allow this scenario," Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said in Moscow.

On Sunday, Putin had described Assad's foes as cannibals who ate their enemies' intestines in front of media cameras.

"Are these the people you want to support? Is it them who you want to supply with weapons?" Putin said in London on his way to the G8.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper was equally blunt, saying that Putin, Assad's only big-power ally at the G8 table, was supporting thugs.

ENNISKILLEN, Northern Ireland (Reuters) - President Barack Obama faces what could be a frosty G8 meeting with Vladimir Putin on Monday after the Russian leader clashed with the West over plans to arm Syrian rebels fighting President Bashar al-Assad.

At their first face-to-face meeting in a year, Obama will try to convince Putin to bring Assad to the negotiating table but the Kremlin chief has warned the West it risks sowing turmoil across the Middle East by stoking the conflict.

British Prime Minister David Cameron, who chairs the G8 summit, acknowledged there was "a big difference" between the positions of Russia and the West on Syria, but stressed there was also common ground between the world's richest powers.

Higher education may give students more familiarity with normative change and more experience negotiating differences. In the Pew survey referred to above, adults with a college degree were only half as likely as those with only a high school diploma to say it is generally better for a marriage if a husband out-earns a wife.

The demand for long-term commitments seems to be steadily declining among both women and men. Philip Cohen persuasively asserts that we should stop bemoaning this change and adapt to a world in which fewer adults marry.

But it is also worth noting that inflexible rules and sticky gender roles impede adjustments that could help increase both the demand for and supply of potential spouses. The sociologist Kathleen Gerson develops this position in some detail in her book “The Unfinished Revolution.”

As same-sex couples have profoundly demonstrated, the demand for marriage is not based on some natural sexual division of labor, but on the desire to give personal commitments public recognition.

Men and women who get this point probably enjoy a distinct advantage in finding a partner, whether or not they are lucky enough to achieve long-run equilibrium with someone they love.

Nancy Folbre is an economics professor at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
#22174
These economists also contend that couples in which the wife earns more than the husband are less satisfied with their marriage and are more likely to divorce. But as the sociologist Philip Cohen points out, this assertion is based on data more than 20 years old and disregards a large body of sociological research.

Some attitudes have recently changed in the United States. According to a recent survey by the Pew Research Center, only about 28 percent of respondents this year agreed that “it was generally better for a marriage if a husband earns more than his wife,” compared with 40 percent in 1997.

Economic factors may shape the pace of attitudinal change. In a fascinating study of nonmarriage among women college graduates in Japan, Jisoo Hwang observes that men whose mothers were employed have less traditional attitudes than other men and were also more likely to marry. She hypothesizes that the relatively recent and abrupt increase in female employment in that country made it more difficult for men there to adjust.

Some evidence from the United States suggests that class and education also influence role flexibility. Affluent couples are more likely to marry than other Americans, perhaps because they don’t need to renegotiate gender roles; they can purchase substitutes for wives’ traditional domestic work in the form of restaurant meals, child care and cleaning services.
#22175
In these circumstances, as the economist Shoshana Grossbard puts it, husbands can pay a low “quasi-wage” for domestic services.

If the supply of women who want to marry decreases, the terms of marriage move in favor of women. They are likely to receive a larger share of joint income and leisure time. Husbands become more likely to relinquish some decision-making power and do more housework and child care.

Marriage market dynamics mean that a bride’s bargaining power is partly determined by the number of other choices her groom has (and vice versa). The changing terms of marriage complicate the effects of women’s improved economic position. On the one hand, men should like the prospect of sharing income with a high-earning woman. On the other hand, they may find it difficult to adjust to a new social role.

Considerable research suggests that gender roles are, in fact, pretty sticky. In a recent article, Marianne Bertrand, Jessica Pan and Emir Kamenica offer evidence that wives often try to enact traditional gender roles in an apparent effort to reassure their husbands that they are not a threat. (The New York Times took note of their findings in an article and a commentary.)
#22176
As a contractual commitment, marriage has a price. It offers both costs and benefits to potential partners. The contract involves commitments for financial support and family care on terms that can be completely egalitarian.

But the terms can also be more advantageous to men or to women. For example, Anglo-American law traditionally gave men greater rights than women in marriage, and some religious traditions today encourage wives, but not husbands, to promise obedience.

Economic prospects matter: not just the relative earnings of men and women but also their relative contributions of time and energy to domestic work and family care.

Women are willing to pay a higher price for marriage than men if they have few alternatives, as when their opportunities for economic independence are restricted. An increase in the supply of women who want to marry drives the price of marriage down for men.

The Declining Demand for Husbands

Once upon a time women seemed more eager than men to marry. Today such generalizations no longer apply.

Is it women’s preferences (the demand for husbands) or men’s preferences (the supply of husbands) that are driving the trend toward less marriage? It’s hard to tell, but some gender asymmetries are apparent. For instance, a recent poll of unmarried blacks of prime marrying age found that only 25 percent of women were seeking a long-term relationship compared with 43 percent of men.

Some people may dislike application of concepts like supply and demand to the search for potential lifetime partners. After all, we like to think of ourselves â€" and our partners â€" as unique individuals, not as substitutes or next-best choices.

But the concept of a marriage market offers some useful insights into the evolution of marriage as an institution. It also helps explain why markets don’t always generate efficient adjustments to new circumstances.

Unrequited love is the very pain of God. The Crucifix is a snapshot of unrequited love. God doesn’t minimize this pain. Suffering it can be a profound identification with Christ’s pain over the lack of appreciation He receives from His Bride. Suffering can be an expression of love and profound sanity. Without love all is demonic chaos. In A Grief Observed, C.S. Lewis said he never imagined grief felt so much like fear. And so it should. Grief follows separation and echoes the ultimate calamity of separation from God. As the unity of man and woman in one flesh mirrors the image and likeness of God, so too the separation of man from woman conjures the cruelty and fragmentation of Hell. But some loves must die, if they are not from God they are not really loves anyway, but still it hurts, like Hell. All death hurts like Hell, because God did not make it. (See Wisdom 1:13-14) But He did redeem it by entering into our separations.

Even the death of a loved one has a clean finality to it, and, normally, is not a deliberate choice on the part of the other to be free of you. Advice from others all sounds cliché. Especially from those well meaning but insensitive vocational terrorists who zoom in with, “Well, maybe God wants you for himself! Have you considered that possibility?” As if you haven’t. Besides, someone heartbroken from rejection, grief, and loss is in no mood to have the joys of celibacy preached at them. The subject of vocation is holy ground where we take off our shoes and tread softly, not go charging in with golf cleats and glib answers. Especially when it’s someone else’s vocation. Unrequited love is real valid agony. And no one has a right to rob you of it so cheaply, especially if they’re stacking false guilt over “not following God’s will” on top of it. It must be endured. And can be.

The Spirituality of Unrequited Love

Unrequited love feels like death. In fact, there are times when death would seem preferable to the unrelenting pain and frustration. There are those, even in the Church, who would seek to minimize or make light of this most unique agony: “Oh, don’t worry about it! Women (or men) are like street cars, there’s another one along any minute!” Like Hell. I don’t think there is any other pain quite like that of unrequited love, especially when rejection is involved, although that might even be preferable to being strung along with hopes raised and dashed with punishing regularity. “Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a wish fulfilled is the tree of life.” (Proverbs 13:12)

Thundering Harley engines nearly drowned out the recitation of the "Our Father" prayer in Latin that accompanied Francis as he greeted the crowd before Mass. In St. Peter's Square, bikers in their trademark leather Harley vests sat alongside nuns and tens of thousands of faithful Catholics taking part in an unrelated, two-day pro-life rally, the centerpiece of which was Francis' Mass.

Francis addressed them both after Mass, giving a blessing to the "numerous participants" of the Harley rally.

Tens of thousands of Harley owners from around the world descended on Rome for the anniversary.

Pam Shaw (pictured, above, with what looks to be a lady mullet) is ready to be deflowered.

The 70-year-old virgin does not believe in sex before marriage â€" and because she’s spent the last 50 years hard at work building her career as a cabaret singer, things, well, got a little dusty down yonder. But now Shaw is rearing to go. “I’m hoping to bag a tall, dark and handsome millionaire,” she admits. “I feel I am ready to give marriage a go and maybe go to bed with a man.”

You go, Pamela! Anyone have a rich, single grandpa who has equipment that still works? Hey, she was a knockout back in the day. -- http://blog.trutv.com/
