Pagasa monitoring LPA near Mindanao

MANILA, Philippines ? A low pressure area near Mindanao is being monitored Monday by the state weather bureau.

The LPA was last seen 1,120 kilometers east of Southern Mindanao, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said.

Although there are a few LPAs formed at this time of the year, weather forecaster Jori Loiz told INQUIRER.net that the chances are not "unusual."

Meanwhile, the northeast monsoon continued to prevail over Luzon.

"The regions of CARAGA, Davao and Soccsksargen will experience cloudy skies with moderate to heavy rainshowers and thunderstorms which may trigger flashfloods and ...Keep on reading: Pagasa monitoring LPA near Mindanao

Yen weakens in Asia after G20 talks

TOKYO ? The yen weakened in early Asian trade Monday after a G20 meeting ended with the world's leading economies pledging not to devalue their currencies, but without targeting Tokyo over the yen's plunge.

The dollar strengthened to 93.90 yen, against 93.53 yen in New York on Friday, while the euro fetched 125.40 yen, from 124.97 yen in US trading.

The G20 pledge echoed a similar recent statement by the G7 richest nations which was also approved by Japan, whose monetary policy has been heavily criticised over claims it guided the yen's steep fall in recent months.

Current stars celebrate Jordan at 50

HOUSTON ? Michael Jordan turned 50 on Sunday, giving this year's NBA All-Stars a chance to reflect on his illustrious career and how much he still means to the sport.

In a weekend filled with the NBA's greatest players, Jordan was the topic no one could stop talking about. Though he hasn't played since the 2002-03 season, Jordan's influence still permeates the league and its players.

Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade said, "everything he did was groundbreaking."

Jordan won six titles and picked up five MVP awards during a career spent mostly with the Chicago Bulls that began in 1984.

Winning the war against electronic waste

MANILA, Philippines?By the time you get your hands on the newest phone model you?ve always wanted, a faster, smaller and perhaps even cheaper version comes out of the pipeline.

Such is the blistering pace of today?s advances in technology that any product becomes obsolete in a matter of months.

The accelerating rate of replacement, however, has resulted in a serious problem that is growing in magnitude?the proliferation of electronic waste worldwide.

According to data from the International Environmental Technology Center of the United Nations Environment Program, an estimated 50 million tons of e-waste are produced every year.

Global Warming Consensus Looking More Like A Myth

Environment: The global warming alarmists repeat the line endlessly. They claim that there is a consensus among scientists that man is causing climate change. Fact is, they're not even close. Yes, many climate scientists believe that emissions of greenhouse gases are heating the earth. Of course there are some who don't. But when confining the question to geoscientists and engineers, it turns out that only 36% believe that human activities are

Good News: Delay Of ObamaCare's Launch More Likely

New HUD Regulations Will Make Discrimination Worse, Not Better

A recent regulation issued by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), purportedly designed to prevent housing discrimination, would effectively increase discrimination and require that mortgage lenders, insurers, and landlords abandon economically sound business practices. Brash New Texas Senator Ted Cruz Isn't Holding Back

Ted Cruz is not going to win Senator Congeniality. Not that he cares. The newly arrived Texas Republican has come out, well, guns blazing -- and not just on guns. The traditional stance for a freshman senator is to hold back a bit. What Will The State Of The Union Do For Tech Stocks?

Could technology comments in the State of the Union speech and a new cybersecurity executive order actually help government contractors, security firms, solar companies and electric car makers? Tech stock action was mixed Wednesday, so investors are not exactly rallying the broad ideas. But long run, security and alternative energy industries in particular might see effects from Obama administration policies emphasized in the SOTU address. Obama

Has Intel cracked the TV problem that Apple couldn't?

Raise your hand if you think Intel (INTC) can offer a significantly better TV set-top box and Internet streaming video service than Apple (AAPL), Roku, Boxee and other players already in the market.
Yeah, that's what I thought. I don't think so either.
The chipmaker made a big splash Tuesday with its announcement that it would build its own consumer electronics device and provide a TV service for it later this year. Speaking at the D: Dive Into Media conference, Erik Huggers, corporate vice president at Intel Media, said the company is developing an Internet television platform and has staffed the new division with people from Apple, Google (GOOG) and Netflix (NFLX).
"For the first time, we will deliver a new consumer electronics product under a new brand," Huggers said. "We'll offer consumers a box, and they'll buy this directly from us. It'll be an Intel-powered device with fantastic industrial design. But it's not just a device. We're working with the entire industry to figure out how we get live TV to consumers over the Internet."
The box and service will provide live TV, on-demand video, "catch-up TV," and apps as well, he said.
Intel should call its new set-top box the WTF, because that was my response when I heard about it.
With Intel's core PC market softening, the Santa Clara, Calif.-based company is searching for new markets for its chips. Mobile devices are one and TV is another. But Intel has a poor track record with...

Microsoft can't figure out the target market for Surface Pro

Many TV viewers watching the Grammy Awards Sunday night at one point had to be scratching their heads and thinking, "What the hell was that about?"
Not after Taylor Swift's bizarre, circus-inspired music number, but Microsoft's (MSFT) Surface Pro commercials.
Microsoft's Surface Pro convertible tablet-notebook was supposed to be marketed to professionals. After all, it's a full Windows 8 PC with Intel (INTC) processors, capable of running Office and other enterprise-strength software. Earlier model Surface devices have low-power ARM (ARMH) -based processors and a new operating system, Windows RT, which runs only specially designed apps. Windows RT tablets debuted in October and were marketed to consumers, but have sold poorly so far.
Microsoft started selling the Surface Pro on Saturday. It saved its big advertising firepower for the highly watched Grammy Awards on CBS. But the ads misfired.
The first commercial, called "The Vibe," is set in an office, but the workers spend their time dancing around, tapping out beats with their stylus pens and getting no real work done. It doesn't even attempt to explain why any professional would want to buy one. For $1,000 for the tablet and keyboard, you sure as heck better make a compelling sales pitch, not some version of a "Step Up"
