MANILA, Philippines
-- Novelty singer and comedian Roman “Yoyoy” Villame died Friday afternoon of an apparent heart attack, some five hours after being rushed to the Las Piñas Medical Center complaining of chest pains, hospital staff and family members said.

Dr Joel Santos, who worked the morning shift, administered cardio-pulmonary resuscitation on Villame shortly after he was helped into the hospital’s emergency room around 9 a.m. He was pronounced dead due to cardio-pulmonary arrest.

Born in 1938, Villame was a former jeepney (minibus) and bus driver from the island province of Bohol and is best known for his comedic antics, as well as his Tagalog and Visayan novelty songs.

One of his songs, the popular “Mag-exercise Tayo,” hit the charts in 1977. He also composed the cutesy tongue twister "Butse Kik."

His first recording entitled Magellan (1972), “was the beginning of a long span of albums and recordings of Yoyoy’s humorous yet politically relevant songs in Visayan, Tagalog and English that was uniquely his own style,” said the Organisasyon ng Pilipinong Mang-aawit in its Online Registry of Filipino Musical Artists.

Dubbed "The Novelty King," Villame recorded more than 40 albums in his career as a singer.

He also starred in several movies during the 1970s, including "Biktima" and "Limasawa". Villame last starred in the critically-acclaimed movie "Ang Babae sa Breakwater."

His nephew, Bernard Villame, recalled his uncle as a very generous fellow who helped him and his children in dire times.

"He gave Jeffrey, one of my sons, a tricycle because my son worked for him as a driver," Bernard said.

His nephew also used to work on Villame’s staff when he was still a city councilor. "Every time I needed assistance, he gave it," Bernard said in Filipino.

Villame was a former councilor of Las Piñas City, having been elected in 1988. His nephew, Bernard Villame, said his uncle served for 10 years as councilor. He ran in 1995 as vice mayor but lost.

"He planned to ran again as councilor this year, but he backed out," Bernard told the Philippine Daily Inquirer, parent company of INQUIRER.net.

Bernard said his uncle was a funny man even off-stage. During parties, he would sing and poke fun at himself -- "up to the point of making visitors pee in their pants from laughter."

At the time of his death, Villame lived at the Doña Josefa Subdivision in Pilar Village, Las Piñas City.

He is survived by his children Hannah, who is also a singer; Apple, Olivia, Roman Jr., Lillian and John.

Sale of cellular phones skyrocketed to an unexpected level since after last Monday's elections.

This could be the most visible effect of the huge cash flow received by Boholanos from "uwan-uwan" or "inangayan" which is the Cebuano term of money received from vote buying during elections.

"I was surprised why our sale of cellphone tripled last Wednesday," a shop owner revealed saying that it was the highest sales he ever had (after operating his shop for five years).

Random check made by the Chronicle on election day showed that vote-buying was all over. No barangay visited by reporters of "DYRD Election Live" would say there was no vote buying either on the eve of election day or two days before the polls.

The "biggest buy" was in Panglao wherein voters receive no less than P3,200 each, presuming he gets from both camps of Mayor-elect Benedicto Alcala and defeated mayor Doloreich Dumaluan. There were even reports that a bigger wave of cash bonanza was ready for the electorate should the other party released another surge of cash.

In the neighboring town of Dauis, leaders of reelected Mayor Lulu Bongalos was reportedly giving P700 cash to the voters on election eve. This reportedly shifted the tilt to Bongalos, instead to newcomer US-based philanthropist Victorio Migriño who has been giving dole-outs over the year. Voters interviewed said they thought Migriño will give more than P700 since he was perceived to be wealthier than the incumbent mayor only to find out that there was nothing more than P100/voter coming from Migriño's camp. Until today, electorates are still puzzled on what caused Migriño to hold on the much expected release of funds to buy votes.

A more business-like approach was noted in the coastal town of Loay where a candidate presented his bonanza through a "packaged deal," wherein a household was arranged to "vote straight" in exchange for P10,000 or P20,000 (depending on the number of households).

This reportedly blocked the victory of the power-cast team of former Mayor Ondoy Clarin and former Mayor Eddie Tiongco together with their popular mayoralty bet, Vice Mayor Bong Bullecer.

The combined forces of two former and an incumbent town leaders was not able to match up the overflowing budget from the camp of lady mayoralty bet May Lim-Imboy.

In the city's hotly contested one-on-one rematch of Mayor Dan Lim and former Mayor Joe Torralba, it was not as "financially bloody" as expected (compared to some towns).

A whole ticket "pay" reportedly tagged P300 or P400 per voter. However, the bonanza became bigger since majority of the candidates for city councilors did "special ops" distributing their individual sample ballots (with their own budget) of P20 to P50 per voter. So, if each kagawad-bet pays P20, a voter would receive no less than P500 from the entire slate.

In most towns, the buying was noted to be no less than P100 per voter (the least).

Meanwhile, some senatoriables allegedly did their own "special ops." Reported to have sent their men to field sample ballots (attached with few hundreds) were the camps of senatoriables Prospero Pichay who landed second in the counting; Ed Angara, Mike Defensor, Migs Zubir and Manny Villar. (With reports from Danny Reyes, Willie Maestrado, Ben Pingkian)  - published in the Bohol Chronicle on May 20, 2007

Former Gov. Rene Relampagos made public his allegations of blatant fraud committed during the canvassing of votes in the third congressional derby which comprises the biggest voting district in the province.

Relampagos, LDP, who run for congressman revealed that he "won the elections, but he just want to know where and how he was cheated."

The categorical statement of the former governor came after he alleged of highly irregular conduct in the municipal board of canvassers in the towns of Loay, Sierra-Bullones, Pilar and Alicia.

He cited the case of Loay, his hometown, wherein the certificate of votes showed him leading over proclaimed winner, Rep-elect Adam Jala by 2,300 votes. However, when the final tally was done, his lead was reduced to a little over 800 votes.

Relampagos likewise alleged that his supporters in Sierra-Bullones town were intimidated narrating voters' testimonies that they were blocked on the way to the precincts in order for them to forcibly pass by the residence of vice mayoralty bet Fredo Gamalo. He said that these intimidations could confirm an earlier survey result which showed that 90% of the people in S-Bullones refuse to answer questions when asked by the Holy Name University Bohol Poll on their voting preference. The HNU survey conducted third week of April is an indication that people there are afraid to "voice out their preference on whom to vote on election day."

Relampagos, during a radio interview said a certain Kag Ending Coja in Pilar reported that Rep. Eladio Jala, father of newly elected solon was seen at the area where the canvassing of votes was conducted. In fact, the solon went inside the SB session hall together with Ms. Sopsop of the municipal board of canvassers. The same report was true in Carmen town, he alleged.

The former governor also reported that four precincts in S-Bullones town had their certificate of canvass of votes not released despite several requests made by his watchers. The S-Bullones board of canvassers delayed the release of the four precincts which was also confirmed by NAMFREL in the city. His watchers were surprised since the COC was given to a represenative of a senatorial candidate who visited the area earlier in the day,. But, when the watcher of Relampagos asked for a copy of the COC, he was flatly denied. The COC was released late afternoon of Thursday.

Lawyer Lord Marapao IV told the Chronicle that they filed electoral protests with the provincial board of canvassers. However, Comelec Supervisor Veronico Petalcorin did not find time to look into the protest papers saying that it should have been filed with the municipal board of canvassers.

The Relampagos counsel asked the Comelec official to just manifest in writing that the protests were submitted and duly noted by him. Petalcorin declined to put into writing and instead asked the counsel to just look at the minutes of the proceedings which were not available until yesterday.

Marapao also reported that in Pilar only 13 election returns were made available, out of the 66 precints in the area.

He said there was a pre-proclamation controversy which erupted last Thursday but Petalcorin did not suspend the proceedings of the canvass.

For his part, Rep-elect Jala bared during a radio interview that they did not violate any election rule while assuming that he will be abiding with what the Comelec prescribes. If the election protests were being "noted" by the Comelec supervisor then Petalcorin has the legal reasons why it has to be conducted that way, Jala stressed.

During the early input of election returns tabulated by NAMFREL, Relampagos made an uptrend lead.He was also a consistent survey leader in two surveys conducted by the Hol;y Name University Research Center

In the final tally, Jala garnered 65,081 votes while Relampagos pooled 62,106 votes.

The Bohol Chronicle

Two father and son teams who are both running for the mayoralty and vice mayoralty posts in their towns during the recent polls failed to prove their dominance in local politics.

In both cases, the fathers, who are serving their third and last terms as mayor, tapped their sons to gun for their municipality's top position while both also decided to slide down as vice mayoralty candidates.

In Guindulman town, incumbent Mayor Oriculo Granada, ran for vice mayor alongside his son Renanti Granada and both were crushed by their opponents who are also sisters, Ma. Fe Piezas and Marivic Golosino.

Likewise, in the town of Albur , mayoralty bet Ephraim Tungol and runningmate-father, incumbent Mayor Efren Tungol, lost by a wide margin against their opponents former mayor Jose Ugdoracion and runningmate Cirilo Jalad.

While viewed by many as a refusal to give way to other equally qualified aspirants, many "political families" in this island province are practically handing down their elective posts to relatives.

While the two father and son teams suffered political upsets, the mother and son tandem of incumbent Buenavista Mayor Elsa Tirol and vice mayoralty aspirant Lowell Tirol came out with convincing victories against their opponents.

The younger Tirol was an eleventh-hour replacement owing to the demise of his father (former mayor Leandro Tirol, who was then incumbent/re-electionist vice mayor) a few weeks into the polls.

This could be an indication of the Tirols' continued dominance in Buenavista despite the passing of their patriarch who is considered by many as one of the political kingpins of northern Bohol.

On the other hand, the father and daughter team-up of re-electionist Sagbayan Mayor Jimmy Torrefranca and runningmate-daughter Valerie Torrefranca-Narona also won against their rivals. The younger Torrefranca winning by a slim margin against her opponent.

Some quarters say that the good showing of political families in the recent elections may be attributed to the satisfactory performance of the family member currently in office or their formidable clout in their respective towns.

An example of which is the clean sweep made by newly-elected Inabanga Mayor Jose Jono Jumamoy and his entire slate.

Despite being branded a product of a political dynasty, the Jumamoy's having held the Inabanga officialdom for over two decades, the U.S. educated young Jumamoy proved he has endeared the Inabangnons as he defeated his opponent by a margin of more than 11,000 votes.

Meanwhile, in Bien Unido, re-electionist Mayor Marianita Garcia and her uncle incumbent Vice Mayor Bernardino Garcia also lost to their opponents.

The incumbent chief executive, wife of the former town mayor Lingging Garcia, was beaten by a young newcomer in Bien Unido politics, Nino Rey Boniel.

INABANGA, Bohol, Philippines - Newly elected Inabanga Mayor Jose Jono Jumamoy could be the youngest local chief executive to assume office in the country at only 21 years old.

But for Jono, who was elected via a landslide victory over his opponent with over a margin of over 6,000 votes, serving the people of his hometown comes as a great responsibility even with his extensive exposure to local politics and his academic preparations.

The US educated mayor-elect, son of Inabanga's former mayors, graduated with a double degree in Management and International Business at Northwood University in West Palm Beach, Florida.

While Jumamoy admits he is a product of a political family, he says his decision to come home and run for mayor in his hometown came after finishing college in the US last November 2006.

In fact, he disclosed, it was never an easy decision considering he was able to secure a working permit in the States and a position at the World Bank which he applied for was already at hand.

"I could have lived a simple without the hassles of politics but I had to weigh my options," he said.

The realization that his education and training in the US could be a great asset if he comes home and, more so, if he will be given a chance to serve in his hometown, came not because his mother, incumbent Mayor Josephine Jumamoy was to end her third term.

The incumbent mayor ran and won as provincial board member in Bohol's second congressional district.

The young Jumamoy bared that he "owes it to the people" of Inabanga for being elected as their mayor. "When you are 21-years old, to be mayor is a big responsibility."

In fact, he was given a clear mandate with the election of his entire slate, from the vice mayor down to his eight candidates for councilor.

"I would be able to handle the position well," Jumamoy assured as he points out that growing up in a family of politicians, he was exposed early to politics as he was also a Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) president of Inabanga and vice president of the SK Bohol Federation before leaving to study in the States.

When asked if his age would be a burden in running the affairs of his town, Jumamoy explained "that's the drawback of being young. You may not have the wisdom of an old man but you do have the energy, the passion and the drive for change and progress."

Jumamoy knows people have different expectations from him. He recalls during his campaign sorties in Inabanga's 50 barangays that most folks used to tell him they still see him as that little boy in tow with his father and mother, when both graced barangay fiestas.

Even his opponent in the elections exploited his age as an issue. He said they tried to project him as immature and incapable of handling the responsibilities of a town mayor.

But, according to Jumamoy, the people instead took his youth as an advantage.

"Qualifications alone is not a guarantee that one can be a good public servant," he said, "one must have a heart for the people to be a successful public servant."

His mother, the incumbent mayor, remembered how the young Jono, then an elementary student in Tagbilaran City, took money from his piggy bank and bought a set of kitchen utensils which was given to an old beggar he saw cooking food in a tin can.

PROGRAM OF GOVERNANCE

The new elected mayor said he will prioritize poverty reduction in his town.

Inabanga, which was recently elevated as a third class municipality, is home to a flourishing raffia-weaving industry.

Jumamoy said if they could tie-up with direct exporters of their finished products, it would mean a growth in the livelihood of Inabanga's grassroots who are involved in loom weaving.

Other priorities are environmental rehabilitation, which the town has started during the administration of the incumbent mayor, improved health care program and population control.

Inabanga, is the birthplace of Francisco Dagohoy, the Boholano who led the Philippine's longest revolt against Spanish rule.

Hi Mike,

Pagka way mga uwaw!

Hello Capitan,

Karong lang ko kapakli sa imong gi-post. Down akong Internet connection for the past two days.

Daug diay ang anak nga Jala. Kung mao na lupig na ang record ni Gov. Aumentado. Dili na siya ang pinakabata nga politiko nga napili sa Bohol.

Nganong dali ra man kaayo ta mailad?

Mike,

Could it be that Bol-anons or for that matter most Filipino tribes have built-in codes in their DNA that defines this idiosyncracy as in "ija-ija aho-aho" norm in their social character?

Capitan,

Not really an ija-ija-aho-aho. My best guess is that we are still carrying the DNA of the cruelties of the bastard Spaniards who for so long deprived us of exercising our true humanity.

GIRL STONED TO DEATH FOR FALLING IN LOVE

A teenage girl lies dead on the ground in a pool of her own blood.

Her once groomed hair is cast across her face like a rag doll's, her skirt pulled up to complete her humiliation.

In another image, she is seen lying on her side, her face battered and bloodied, barely recognisable.

The concrete block used to smash in her face lies next to her.

Du'a Khalil Aswad was beaten, kicked and stoned for 30 minutes at the hands of a lynch mob before one of her attackers launched a carefully aimed fatal blow.

The murder was carried out in public, watched by hundreds of men cheering and yelling. Du'a's crime? To fall in love with a Sunni boy. Her family practised the Yezidi religion.

The Sunnis and Yezidis hate each other. When Du'a ran away with her Sunni boyfriend, a sentence of death was passed on her.

This act of medieval savagery took place last month in a town in northern Iraq, in the fledgling 'democracy' created by Bush and Blair when they invaded the country in 2003 and 'freed' its people.

The sickening scenes, which defy belief in every sense, were captured by some of the observers and participants who thought it would be proper to record these harrowing events as some sort of memento.

Perhaps they thought it would serve as a warning to other young people who dared to follow their hearts - not the strictures of a religion which will not brook dissent - and punishes adolescent impetuosity with the most brutal of public murders.

The killing was filmed on a number of mobile phones. The images were then - all too predictably - posted on the internet.

The Mail takes no pleasure in publishing these pictures. But we believe our readers should witness the depths of the depravity still being carried out in the 21st century in the name of 'honour'.

Perhaps, then, something can be done to prevent it happening again.

Of course, anyone who takes even a passing interest in news is all too aware of the tragedy that has engulfed the people of Iraq: the daily bombings, murders and kidnappings.

The subjugation of its women, however, has been largely ignored. Yet according to cultural observers, the number of so-called 'honour killings' has increased in Iraq since the fall of Saddam Hussein.

Campaigners say there is an 'epidemic' of such killings in the wartorn country. Autopsy reports in Baghdad often conclude with the verdict: "Killed to wash away her disgrace."

The filming of Du'a's death was just one more macabre element of her killing, but it has achieved something those bloodthirsty amateur filmmakers could not have predicted: it has brought such practices into the open and exposed them to the wider world.

It is, of course, too late for Du'a, a strikingly pretty young girl with long auburn hair. The 17-year-old must have hoped that the 'liberation' of her country would afford her opportunities she might otherwise never have had - for her education and a life of happiness free from oppression.

She lived with her family in the town of Bashika, near Mosul. They were neither rich nor poor.

It is believed Du'a met her Sunni boyfriend - whose name is not known - several months ago. They had grown up in an environment where hatred against rival factions is the norm.

The Yezidis - a Gnostic sect which combines Islamic teachings with Persian religions - despise the Sunnis; the Sunnis loathe the Yezidis.

Du'a and her boyfriend would have been all too aware that theirs was a forbidden love. But like so many teenagers before them, right back to the illicit love of Romeo and Juliet, they couldn't help themselves.

For a while, they met in secret. It was during one such highly charged meeting that they came up with a plan to run away together.

It is not clear whether this desperate measure was a result of their having sought and been refused permission to marry, or if they decided to do it knowing that such permission would never be obtained.

"Her family would never have agreed to such a marriage," says Diana Nammi, a leading Kurdish women's rights campaigner.

Some Muslim groups have claimed that Du'a converted to Islam shortly before her murder. According to other reports, her boyfriend denies this.

They ran away together to an address in Bashika. The girl's family alerted the police and Du'a and her boyfriend were found just a few days later.

According to Ms Nammi, who is calling for the girl's killers to be brought to justice, Du'a was arrested and put into prison.

A few days later, the police apparently received assurances from the leader of her tribe - who Ms Nammi believes is Du'a's uncle - that the girl would not be harmed.

What happened next is the subject of conflicting reports. According to some, the house of the tribal leader was stormed by a mob and Du'a dragged out and killed.

Ms Nammi, however, says she has information that it was the tribal leader who betrayed his niece to the mob. In this man's eyes, Du'a had committed an unforgiveable crime, punishable by death.

The family's 'honour' had been besmirched. The moment Du'a was placed in his house, her fate was sealed.

On April 7, Du'a was brought out of the house in a headlock to face the lynch mob. Hundreds of men were waiting for her - the excited atmosphere is said to have resembled a large sporting event - but no women.

On the video, Du'a's screams can be heard as she is dragged to the ground. In a further humiliation, her lower body has been stripped.

Instinctively, Du'a tries to cover herself; only later was a piece of clothing thrown over her.

She is surrounded by an enormous crowd jockeying for a good view of the ritualistic killing. About nine men take part in the attack, including, it is thought, members of the girl's family.

To any father of a daughter, that a helpless girl should be set upon with such cowardly savagery is beyond comprehension. One can barely imagine her terror.

It is a profoundly disturbing spectacle. One man kicks her hard between the legs as she screams in agony. Du'a tries to lift herself up, but someone hurls a concrete block into her face.

Another man stamps on her face. Someone kicks her in the stomach. Police officers stand idly by, some of them apparently enjoying the spectacle as much as anyone else.

Meanwhile, some observers film the execution on their mobile phones - the modern world intruding on a spectacle that belongs more in the Roman arena than in an apparently civilised society.

After half an hour of this savagery, Du'a is finally - mercifully, perhaps - dead. In a final humiliation, a man tries to lift her up, but drops her again, and her bloodied body is rolled face down into a puddle of blood. The family has had its 'honour' restored.

According to Ms Nammi, Du'a's parents did not want her to be stoned, though it is not clear whether they might have agreed for her to be killed in some other way.

After her murder, according to Ms Nammi, two men were arrested by Iraqi police, but she has heard they were subsequently released without charge.

Reports suggest that two of Du'a's uncles and four other people fled the town as investigators began to search for the culprits. It is thought these included her brother, who appeared in the video of the murder.

As for Du'a's boyfriend - who has lost the girl he loved in the most awful circumstances imaginable - he went into hiding for a while, but it is believed that no action has been taken against him.

Du'a was buried in a simple unmarked grave. Later, says Ms Nammi, her body was exhumed by the Kurdish authorities, who have autonomous control of the region, and sent to the Medico-legal Institute in Mosul.

There her body was examined to find out whether she had been a virgin or not, before being returned to the Sheikh Shams cemetery.

To our Western eyes, this posthumous assault on Du'a's body is the final insult. But according to Ms Nammi, it did at least establish that she was still a virgin and innocent of the 'crime' of which she had been accused.

However, Ms Nammi believes the mere fact that Du'a had run off with a Sunni boy would have been enough to have her sentenced to death.

Meanwhile, the cycle of tit-for-tat murders continues in Iraq. In this instance, in an apparent act of retaliation for Du'a's murder, 23 Yezidi workers were attacked and killed two weeks later, apparently by members of an armed Sunni group.

The men were travelling on a bus between Mosul and Bashika when their vehicle was halted by the gunmen, who made them disembark before killing them.

Tomorrow evening, Ms Nammi, founding member of the Iranian and Kurdish Women's Rights Organisation, will lead a group of women meeting in Shoreditch, East London, to remember Du'a Khalil Aswad and give back to her the dignity torn from her by her violent death.

The women are pledged to campaign against the entrenched beliefs which lead to such senseless deaths - and the fact that the people who commit these crimes are not regarded as murderers, but as heroes of the community.

According to Ms Nammi, there have been an estimated 10,000 cases of honour killings in the Kurdistan region in the past decade.

Under Iraqi law, the punishment for anyone found guilty of an honour killing is just six months in prison.

"Something has to be done to stop this," says Ms Nammi, who came to Britain in 1996. "There is an epidemic of so-called honour killings. It is almost routine and utterly unacceptable.

"We would greatly appreciate any contribution from the British Government in preventing these murders of women in Iraq."

Ms Nammi has the support of Amnesty International.

"This young girl's murder is truly abhorrent and her killers must be brought to justice," says Kate Allen, Amnesty International UK Director.

"Unless the authorities respond vigorously to this and other reports of crimes in the name of "honour", we must fear for the future of the women in Iraq."

For the sake of 17-year-old Du'a, an innocent girl who simply fell in love with the wrong man, it is all too little, too late.

Da Vinci’s Prescription for Life (reprinted from Dave Dewitt's Da Vinci’s Kitchen: A Secret History of Italian Cuisine):

If you want to be healthy observe this regime.

Do not eat when you have no appetite, and dine lightly,

Chew well, and whatever you take into you

Should be well-cooked and of simple ingredients

He who takes medicine is ill advised.

Beware anger and avoid stuffy air.

Stay standing a while when you get up from a meal.

Make sure you do not sleep at midday.

Let your wine be mixed with water, take little and often,

Not between meals, not on an empty stomach.

Neither delay nor prolong your visit to the toilet.

If you take exercise, let it not be too strenuous.

Do not lie with your stomach upward and your head

Downward. Be well covered at night,

And rest your head and keep your mind cheerful.

Avoid wantonness and keep to this diet.

Elaboration by productdose.com

Seems pretty straightforward, but maybe it's easier to abide by the prescription in 15th century Italy. Living is a little more complicated in our fast paced world. It'd be an interesting comparison to see how each of his prescriptions translates to modern life. Let's see:

   1. Do not eat when you have no appetite, and dine lightly

Sounds like a good idea, but don't listen to me. Here's what Elaine Magee, Ph D has to say: Eat when you're hungry, stop when you're comfortable. "There's a difference between stuffed and comfortable," she says. "If you truly follow that concept, you should be hungry every two or three hours." (WebMD)

   2. Chew well, and whatever you take into you
Should be well-cooked and of simple ingredients

Yup, even our President can attest to this one. Dubya on the wisdom of mothers: "If my mother is listening, mother, I should have listened to you: Always chew your pretzels before you swallow." (CNN )

   3. He who takes medicine is ill advised

He's spot on about this one too. It's been well-publicized in the last couple of decades that we're an overmedicated society. We take pills for minor aches and pains, and there seems to be a pill for everything we presume to suffer, from ADD and baldness to vomiting and diarrhea. Doctors are too much influenced by big pharma so do not always have the patient's best interest in mind. For those self-administering, treating an ailment with the wrong medication make matters even worse (Mott Children's Hospital).

   4. Beware anger and avoid stuffy air

We all know anger kills. What's this about stuffy air? Turns out being inside can sometimes be pretty bad for your health too. There are biological pollutants such as mites, molds, dander, and cockroaches. Then you have cigarette smoke, asbestos, lead dust, carbon monoxide, the list goes on. Being inside is as hazardous to your health as standing in the middle of rush hour traffic huffing exhaust fumes.

   5. Stay standing a while when you get up from a meal

Gravity helps keep food where it belongs, in the stomach area and not backing up into the esophagus area, thus decreasing the likelihood of heartburn. Simple physics.

   6. Make sure you do not sleep at midday

Avoiding naps during the day leads to more restful sleep at night.

   7. Let your wine be mixed with water, take little and often,
Not between meals, not on an empty stomach

It wasn't until the 1990s that Americans realized the health benefits of regular wine-drinking. Alcohol has been used for its curative properties for millennia; the Egyptians were brewing beer 5000 years ago to treat illnesses. It took a French scientist, Dr. Serge Renaud, to deliver us from our benightedness. We should've just studied Leonardo's Last Supper a little more closely to see what the Apostles were drinking.

   8. Neither delay nor prolong your visit to the toilet

Now, this prescription I'm curious about because we've all enjoyed an entire magazine while on the throne. It's one of the more relaxing times of the day for many of us, the far stall being a great place to avoid the boss. I was shocked to discover that just sitting on the toilet too long can lead to hemorrhoidal flare-ups because it increases the pressure on the veins of the anus. Get on and get off. Don't linger like a panhandler outside a 7-Eleven.

   9. If you take exercise, let it not be too strenuous

Those who do little vigorous exercise actually die from heart attacks less often versus those who train long and hard. Seems counterintuitive as heck but, as with everything, moderation seems to be the key.

  10. Do not lie with your stomach upward and your head
      Downward

We've already mentioned the heartburn reducing benefits of keeping your stomach below your head; there are also other downsides of having your head below your belly. Giraffes graze from treetops because if they bend down to nibble low-lying grass when they straighten back up they can lose consciousness because of the sudden change of pressure when the blood pooled in the head region flows back into the body. So, hanging upside down for long periods may cause several health issues, such as hemorrhaging, even though your neck probably isn't as long as a giraffe's.

  11. Be well covered at night
And rest your head and keep your mind cheerful

From another smart and talented fellow, Benjamin Franklin, "A cheerful face is nearly as good for an invalid as healthy weather". Old Ben Franklin was another polymath of some renown so I'll go with it.

  12. Avoid wantonness and keep to this diet

Leonardo had one close female friend his entire life, his closest companions being his lifelong pupils Salai and Melzi. It's been speculated that he may have been gay but it seems more likely he was asexual, not having a high regard for **** at all. He commented "the act of procreation and anything that has any relation to it is so disgusting that human beings would soon die out if there were no pretty faces and sensuous dispositions". Hmm, this one I'll suffer the consequences of not abiding by. A man can't live on virtue alone.

Seems old Leo knew much of which he spoke. The more history reveals about Da Vinci, the more impressive his legend becomes. His stature resides in his multitude of skills and talents but one has to wonder what would he have been if he had concentrated on one discipline. What if he had focused his energies on building war machines for the Italian military? He did develop a close friendship with Machiavelli. Maybe it was for the best he chose to disperse his impossible mind across many disciplines. As for the rest of us mortals, we now have the map to being like Leo.

My early comments ........

1) With the loss of Atty. Nuevas Tirol Montes and the failure to make it to the City Council of aspiring politician in Leah Tirol Magno coupled with the apparent inability to dislodge V-Gov. Julius Herrera by Mrs. Freda Tirol, do these developments signal the dimming of the Tirol influence in the Bohol political firmament?

2) We, from the third congressional district, has proven our collective worth as a politically mature electorate by not having succumbed to money politics and gave someone with a "less evil" perception to represent us in Congress! No thanks for the help of another dynastic political clan some forty kilometers east from Tagbilaran!

3) With the election of a mayor perceived to be a Capitol lackey in Carmen, will the Choco Hills complex be offered on a silver platter to the vested interests now sitting at the Provincial Tourism Council that has been for a long time salivating on having the op to run the facility.

More to come!!!

Angayan nga motubag ang katawhang Bol-anon sa mga pangutana ni Capitan Berong. Ania ang akong Tubag:

1. There are many factors to be considered when we want to make a political analysis. Well, Capitan Berong's simple diagnosis on the waning clout of the Tirol clan is something to think about. Maybe, just maybe, the Tirols in Bohol are experiencing the so-called "declining marketability." I don't really know. Let Capitan Berong explore more on this angle.

2. I would be scared to live in the third district of my province if the son Jala won in the elections. For me, it's unimaginable that a young boy who just graduated from Ateneo and did not really live in Bohol would be taking care of 19 towns of Bohol. He does not even know the location of my barangay.

3. That's it! The Chocolate Hills Complex has been a monument of shame. Talking of world-class tourism?
No, we are overrating the Chocolate Hills. Look at the toilet over there. The Choco complex has to be handled by a capable entity. Whoever will handle the Choco complex, I just hope the future manager (if there would be change of ownership/management) would put the interest of Bohol over personal gratification.

Inspiration & Hope / The Waggle Dance
May 15, 2007, 04:11:14 PM
Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did. â€"John 4:29

How do bees lead one another to nectar? Scientists say it’s all about the “waggle” dance. The theory was regarded with skepticism when it was first proposed by Nobel Prize-winning zoologist Karl von Frisch in the 1960s. But now, researchers in the United Kingdom have used tiny radar responders attached to worker bees to support von Frisch’s theory. They’ve confirmed that the bee orients its body toward the food source and uses the intensity of its waggle dance to signal the distance to other bees.

The woman who met Jesus at Jacob’s well also found a way to lead the rest of her community to what she had foundâ€"living water (John 4:10). They were drawn to discover why this woman with five ex-husbands and a current live-in was saying, “Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did” (v.29).

As the crowd was on its way, the One who on other occasions had called Himself “the bread of life” (6:48) was telling His disciples that His food was found in doing the will of God (4:32,34).

Jesus is living water and food for our soul. Joining Him to do the will of God and finish the work He has given us to do is the ultimate source of nourishment. â€"Mart De Haan

All their works they do to be seen by men. â€"Matthew 23:5

An increasing number of antique leather-bound books are being purchased for their covers and not their content. Interior designers buy them by the linear yard and use them to create a warm, old-world atmosphere in the homes of affluent clients. Of prime importance is whether they match a room’s decor. One wealthy businessman purchased 13,000 antique books he will never read just to create a library look in his renovated home. Those books are just for show.

Focusing on outward appearances can be a pleasing way to decorate a house, but it’s a dangerous way to live. Jesus reprimanded many religious leaders of His day because they did not practice what they preached. They were addicted to receiving praise and feeling self-important. Instead of opening the kingdom of heaven to people, they shut the door in their faces. Jesus said of them, “All their works they do to be seen by men” (Matt. 23:5).

The Lord calls us to be people of inner substance, not just outward appearance. We are to demonstrate the reality of His presence in us by an attitude of humility. “He who is greatest among you shall be your servant” (v.11).

In living for Jesus, our content is far more important than our cover. We are here for more than show. â€"David C. McCasland

Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her. â€"Proverbs 31:28

Many people have been richly blessed by what they learned at their mother’s knee. Consider John and Charles Wesley. Their names would probably never have lighted the pages of history if it hadn’t been for their godly mother who taught them that the law of love and Christian witness was to be their daily guide.

Susannah Wesley spent one hour each day praying for her 17 children. In addition, she took each child aside for a full hour every week to discuss spiritual matters with him or her. No wonder John and Charles were used of God to bring blessing around the world.

Here are a few rules she followed in training her children: Subdue self-will in a child and work together with God. Teach him to pray as soon as he can speak. Give him nothing he cries for and only what is good for him if he asks for it politely. To prevent lying, punish no fault that is freely confessed, but never allow a rebellious, sinful act to go unchecked. Commend and reward good behavior. Strictly observe all promises you have made to your child.

Let us honor our godly mothers today, not only with words of praise for them but with lives that reflect the impact of their holy influence! â€"Henry G. Bosch

Inspiration & Hope / No Need To Panic
May 15, 2007, 04:05:11 PM
Do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you. â€"1 Peter 4:12

On a Bible-teaching cruise in the Caribbean, I was listening to the customary first-day safety briefing. The precautions were vital in case the ship should have to be evacuated.

The instructions from the ship’s personnel concluded with a simple but significant explanation. A specific combination of air-horn blasts, indicating a drill, would be distinctly different from those indicating a real emergency. The distinction was critical. A drill did not constitute a need to evacuate. If passengers were to panic during the drill, it could result in chaos.

When we don’t understand the circumstances that surround us, it’s easy to be shaken by life’s alarms. Peter’s generation experienced the same thing. His warning was simple: “Do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you” (1 Peter 4:12).

The trials and heartaches of life may sound like a call to evacuateâ€"to run away or to respond to life in ways that are disheartening and destructive. But we would do well to listen more closely to our Lord. The trial may be nothing more than a reminder that our trust is to be in God, not in people. We can trust Him in those times when the alarms start to sound. â€"Bill Crowder

My flesh and my heart fail; but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. â€"Psalm 73:26

David fled Jerusalem, driven from his home by his son Absalom, who had gathered an army of supporters. As he escaped, he instructed Zadok, his priest, to take the ark of God back to Jerusalem and to lead his people in worship there. “If I find favor in the eyes of the Lord,” he mused, “He will bring me back and show me both it and His dwelling place.” But if not, “Here I am, let Him do to me as seems good to Him” (2 Sam. 15:25-26).

Perhaps, like David, you’ve lost the power of self-determination. Someone has seized control of your life, or so it seems.

You may fear that circumstance and human caprice have overturned your plans. But nothing can frustrate God’s loving intention. Tertullian (150â€"220 AD) wrote, “[Do not regret] a thing which has been taken away . . . by the Lord God, without whose will neither does a leaf glide down from a tree, nor a sparrow of one farthing’s worth fall to the earth.”

Our heavenly Father knows how to care for His children and will allow only what He deems best. We can rest in His infinite wisdom and goodness.

Thus we can echo David’s words: “Here I am, let Him do to me as seems good to Him.” â€"David H. Roper

If you are helpless in life’s fray,
God’s mighty power will be your stay;
Your failing strength He can renew,

Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” â€"Matthew 16:16

When Jesus asked a question, it was not because He didn’t know the answer. You can be sure He was making a point.

Jesus and His disciples were in Caesarea Philippi, away from their own territory. It was a place of idolatry and oppressionâ€"a threatening place both politically and spiritually. In this environment, Jesus posed two important questions about the perception of His identity. He wasn’t interested in His popularity rating. He wanted His followers to be sure about the One they were following.

Today our culture is just as hostile and opposed to Jesus as when He first asked the question: “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?” (Matt. 16:13). As in Jesus’ day, people offer a long list of inadequate and incorrect ideas about Jesus, ranging from “just a good teacher” all the way to “divisive” and “intolerant.”

The real question was and continues to be: “Who do you say that I am?” (16:15). Peter boldly declared, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God” (v.16). Jesus said that Peter’s accurate confession was a God-given insight and that he was blessed because of his declaration (v.17).

Join Peter in confessing that Jesus is your Savior. Your life will be bolstered and blessed. â€"Joe Stowell

David did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, . . . except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite. â€"1 Kings 15:5

One of the problems that writers face is the challenge of being honest about evil. When I write, I want the good guys to always be right. But even the best people have flaws. So to be credible, writers must be honest about the evil that lurks in good people.

One reason I believe the Bible is true is that the Author did not cover up the flaws of His chosen people. God was honest about the failures of those He hand-picked for leadership positions. He didn’t excuse their bad behavior, minimize their failures, or look the other way. He reported it, judged it, measured out the consequences, and forgave it.

The most prominent example in Scripture is King David. Not only did he take another man’s wife, he then took the man’s life to cover up his adultery. Yet despite his despicable deeds, when he was confronted, David repented. He became the standard by which future kings of Israel were judged because his heart was “loyal to the Lord” (1 Kings 15:3,11).

God knows the heart of everyone, and He is no respecter of persons. Although the truth of sin can be painful, when it’s confessed and forgiven, it can be used to turn our hearts toward God. â€"Julie Ackerman Link

Who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this? â€"Esther 4:14

When I was about 7, I was in the car with my mom and two sisters when my mother pulled over to the side of the road to study the map. “Are we lost, Mom?” I was worried.

“Oh, no,” she replied cheerfully, quickly folding up the map. “We’re on an adventure.” My sisters and I exchanged doubtful glances as one of them whispered knowingly, “We’re lost.”

Adventures can be funâ€"and scary. They usually involve a bit of the unknown. As we walk in fellowship with God, it’s likely that our lives will have many unique adventuresâ€"opportunities to serve Him. If we’re reluctant or scared and we turn down an opportunity, we miss out. Will God still get the job done? Of course. But someone else will receive the blessing.

In Esther 4, Mordecai encouraged the young queen Esther to help rescue her people. He cautioned: “If you remain completely silent . . . deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. Yet who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” (v.14).

Esther was naturally frightened to take this assignment. But God used her courage and faith to deliver her people. Trust God to show you the way. Adventure ahead! â€"Cindy Hess Kasper

I bow my knees to the Father . . . that He would grant you . . . to be strengthened with might through His Spirit. â€"Ephesians 3:14,16

A friend sent me an e-mail that concluded with a list of prayer requests. She said, “Spiritually, I am confused, so pray for understanding. Physically, I am tired, so pray for rest. Emotionally, I am very weak, so pray for strength. Mentally, I am worried, so pray for peace.”

When I saw her later, I told her, “I’ve been SPEM praying for you.” She looked confused, so I told her I was praying for her spiritual, physical, emotional, and mental well-being.

Scripture illustrates God’s care in each of these areas.

Spiritual: Jesus prayed for His disciples: “Sanctify them by Your truth” (John 17:17). Truth leads to spiritual understanding, eliminating confusion.

Physical: Peter had a physical needâ€"release from jail. His friends prayedâ€"and he got out (Acts 12:1-11). In God’s care we find security and rest (Ps. 16:9).

Emotional: Often the psalmists asked God for relief from distress (4:1; 18:6; 107:6-7). He brings hope.

Mental: Insight and wisdom are promised for those who cry out to God (Prov. 2:3-6; James 1:5-7). Through prayer and reading His Word, the peace of God can be found.

Are you struggling? Ask God for spiritual, physical, emotional, and mental assistance. â€"Dave Branon

Inspiration & Hope / Source of Gladness
May 15, 2007, 02:31:13 PM
As sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things. â€"2 Corinthians 6:10

Paul Gerhardt, a pastor in Germany during the 17th century, had every reason not to be glad. His wife and four of his children died; the Thirty Years’ War brought death and devastation across Germany; church conflict and political interference filled his life with distress. Yet despite great personal suffering, he wrote more than 130 hymns, many of them characterized by joy and devotion to Jesus Christ.

One of Gerhardt’s hymns, “Holy Spirit, Source Of Gladness,” contains this verse:

Let that love which knows no measure
Now in quickening showers descend,
Bringing us the richest treasures
Man can wish or God can send;
Hear our earnest supplication,
Every struggling heart release;
Rest upon this congregation,
Spirit of untroubled peace.

Because God’s abounding love is poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit (Rom. 5:5), is there any situation in which we cannot experience the joy He gives?

During a time of great personal hardship, the apostle Paul described his experience as being “sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things” (2 Cor. 6:10).

Pain and sorrow are inescapable facts of life. Yet the Holy Spirit is our source of gladness, “bringing us the richest treasures man can wish or God can send.” â€"David C. McCasland

Happiness depends on happenings, but joy depends on Jesus.

Inspiration & Hope / Talent Search
May 15, 2007, 02:29:14 PM
I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” â€"Isaiah 6:8

Television shows like American Idol have become a global phenomenon. Millions wait anxiously to find out who will be the next singer eliminated in the musical talent hunt.

Some call it “a new concept in entertainment,” but it’s hardly a new idea. As a boy, I remember watching Ted Mack’s Original Amateur Hour. That show was followed by the bizarre talent hunt The Gong Show in the 70s, and then by Star Search in the 80s. It is an ongoing theme of television to search for someone unknown and make him or her famous.

Dreams of fame and fortune, however, are not at the heart of the search that is truly timeless. That search is God’s own pursuit of hearts that are available for His work in the world.

In Isaiah, the Lord asks: “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” And then we read Isaiah’s ready response: “Here am I! Send me” 6:8.

God is not seeking the most qualified or talented; rather, He is seeking hearts that are surrendered to Him. He is seeking those who are available, dependable, and willing to be used. In those lives, God will show Himself strong, and He will be glorified.

Are you available? â€"Bill Crowder

Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. â€"Hebrews 12:2

When my son Joe was a child, I took him to the local YMCA for swimming lessons. I could almost see an Olympic gold medal swinging around his neck.

To my chagrin, Joe didn’t “wow” the class. Instead, he took one look at the water, one look at the instructor, and started bawling.

I thought, Oh, no, I’ve fathered a coward! To make matters worse, the instructor motioned for me to take Joe back to the locker room. In the midst of his sobs and pleas to go home, I gave him a little pep talk: “You can do it, Joe! I’ll come to all your lessons, and we’ll have a signal. When you get scared you can look up at me, and when I hold my thumb up you’ll know it’s going to be okay because I’m here cheering you on.” Joe finally agreed, and today he can swim circles around me.

How often we too face situations that seem overwhelming and impossible. It’s in those times that we need to find our confidence in Jesus. Our first instinct may be to back away in fear. But that’s exactly when we need to look to Jesus, “the author and finisher of our faith” (Heb. 12:2), who will raise His nail-scarred hand and say, “Stay with it. Run the race. I’ve run it before you, and in My power you can win. You can do it!” â€"Joe Stowell

I saw that wisdom excels folly as light excels darkness. â€"Ecclesiastes 2:13

Brewster Kahle has a vision for the Internet. He dreams of universal access to all human knowledge. As Digital Librarian and Director and co-founder of Internet Archive, Kahle believes we have only begun to tap the vast potential of the Internet to change and improve our world. “My interest,” he says, “is to build the great library. . . . It is now technically possible to live up to the dream of the Library of Alexandria.” He’s referring to a huge vault of writings in ancient Egypt that was said to house all the world’s knowledge.

But knowledge is not the same as wisdom. King Solomon was a man of vast knowledge (1 Kings 4:29-34). In his better moments, he used his God-given capacity to collect information and insight from every corner of life. In unguarded moments, however, he showed that all the knowledge in the world does not keep a person from missing the purpose of life (Eccl. 1:16-18). In spite of his knowledge, Solomon married many women, and when he was old he built altars to their gods (1 Kings 11:1-11). His foolishness eventually led to his downfall.

Wisdom is the application of knowledge. Don’t get caught in a web of knowledge without true wisdom that comes from the fear of the Lord (Prov. 1:7; 9:10). â€"Mart De Haan

True wisdom is in living

True wisdom is in walking
Where He shall lead the way.

This article is very informative, and should be read by Filipino educators.

The problem is that some Tagalog-speaking idiots want that Tagalog be used in public classrooms. We people in the Visayas - can we also suggest that Bisaya be used as medium of instruction? Why just Tagalog? What's so special in Tagalog? They just filed a petition in the Supreme Court to push for the use of Tagalog as medium of instruction in the primary level, which is very critical in a child's learning development.

The IMF wants to be repaid for the money it lent to a country. Stockholders of IMF, usually corporate giants in America (can also be individuals), will not also stop pounding the IMF board that it should keep on pursuing its debtors, small countries like the Philippines.

LGU Philippines / Who is Pito Honculada?
May 08, 2007, 09:57:53 AM
Lately, emails from a person named Pito Honculada flooded the Internet, pronouncing his or her anti-Toto Veloso footnotes.

This Pito Honculada claimed that Mr. Veloso, who is running for vice-mayor in Tagbilaran, is allegedly behind a Masiao operation in the city, and that Toto Veloso is allegedly involved in some mahjong sessions.

Is there any truth to these claims?

We want to know the truth so we can be guided who to vote for. We cannot just waste our votes on candidates who cannot stand as ideal posters for public decency.

And who is Pito Honculada? How much he knew about Toto Veloso? Can we still hear of the name Pito Honculada after the elections?

Two Boholanos are among the 38 senatorial bets jockeying for the 12 posts in the Senate during the May 14 elections.

Sonia Malasarte Roco, wife of late Senator Raul Roco is running under the Genuine Opposition (GO) while international award winning movie actor/director Cesar Montano was picked to replace Leyte Gov. Jericho Petilla under the administration's Team Unity.

Roco is the daughter of the late Boholano Congressman Pablo and Petra Malasarte from Bilar and Calape towns, respectively.

Montano, whose real name is Cesar Manhilot is the son of lawyer Genovevo Q. Manhilot of Baclayon town while his mother, Emma de Montano is from Iloilo.

The development of these two Boholanos joining the senatorial race raised hopes that Bohol might again gain the glory of having produced another senator.

It maybe recalled that the province has produced five senators.

They were Senate Pro-tempore Jose A. Clarin during the American regime in 1920; Senator Juan S. Torralba, shortly before the abolition of the Senate in 1935; Senator Carlos P. Garcia (who later became the President), in 1941; Senator Olegario B. Clarin in 1946 and Senator Ernesto Herrera in 1987.

Ms. Roco's inclusion in the opposition ticket came as supporters of her late husband endorsed her to the senatorial race. She is running under the Aksyon Demokratiko Party.

During an interview yesterday while on the campaign trail in Rizal province, the 63-year old senatorial bet viewed her decision to run for senator to be anchored with a vision of pursuing the unfinished agenda of her late husband of providing quality education to the majority of the Filipinos especially those in the rural areas. The late Sen. Roco served as education secretary before his demise.

"Improving the present curriculum" is her priority concern in tandem with the need to advance the welfare of the thousands of public school teachers who are considered "the unsung heroes," she declared.

The be-medalled academe from the University of the Philippines said her exposure is with the non-government organization including St Micahel Foundation which takes care of indigent cancer patients. She recalled having been given a "second life" after she miraculously survived during an earthquake which hit Bagiuo City. She was recovered alive days after she was penned beneath the rubbles of Hyatt-Baguio Hotel.

Meanwhile, Montano was in high spirit attending the Team Unity proclamation rally in Cebu City yesterday afternoon.

During an interview with the Chronicle after the Cebu rally, the movie actor said that this opportunity of serving the Filipinos just "came into his lap" as he did not expect to replace Leyte Gov. Petilla in the administration senatorial ticket. However, he admitted being aware that he was included in the short list of Malacañang's choices for the administration's senatorial line-up.

Asked if he applied, Montano said, "I was offered."

Pressed to comment on reactions that he is just being used by the administration to generate votes in the May 14 polls, Montano reacted saying "it is quite unfair to say that since even without me, the Team Unity will still win."

"I'm taking this as a rare opportunity in my life," he said.

When asked to comment on what he can do in the Senate, the multi-awarded movie director said he will prioritize the need to "restore the genuine Filipino culture and arts which has been relegated by this modern generation."

He said that serving the people is not new to him as he has been running his Panaghoy Children Foundation which was established after he personally went to the hinterland barangay of Mabini town where 27 innocent children perished due to mass food poisoning some five years ago.

He could not help but assure the Boholanos that "charity would begin at home" once elected as senator.

ACTOR IN THE SENATE?

Montano was not picked because of his being an actor, declared Secretary Ace Durano, campaign manager of Team Unity, during a separate interview with the Chronicle last night in Cebu City.

"His being an actor is just accidental," he said citing that Montano's credibility as a person augurs well for a good statesman.

He said that the choice for the Team Unity is anchored on their credibility to advocate the existing 10-point agenda of the administration.

Sec. Durano said the legislative initiatives to be done by them once elected are already guided by the 10-point agenda which he enumerated as balanced budget, education for all, infrastructure and transportation, end hostilities with MILF and NPA, automated election by 2010, healing of wounds in the EDSA I and II, electrification, employment and decentralized development.

MONTANO

The award-winning actor Montano is a Boholano native. Although his showbiz career has kept him in Manila most of the time, the actor is actually a registered voter of barangay San Roque, Baclayon town where he has established his residency for the past 5-years and 9-months.

Montano's claim to fame started in 1998 when he portrayed our national hero Jose Rizal in the movie of the same title.

Then came Muro-Ami, a movie which was almost wholly filmed here in Bohol, which also became an opportunity for another Boholano, Rebecca Lusterio to be discovered.

In 2001, Montano starred in Bagong Buwan, a film which tackled the plight of Filipino Muslims.

His success in the film industry paved the way for producing and even directing his own films.

In 2004, he acted, directed and shelled out P25-million to produce the critically acclaimed Panaghoy sa Suba, which was a Visayan-language film with English subtitles.

Montano was awarded Best Director for the film in the Brussels International Film Festival last December.

The actor was also featured in the Miramax film The Great Raid which was released in mid-2005 along with Hollywood actors Joseph Fiennes, Benjamin Bratt and Connie Nielsen.

ROCO

Sonia Roco said she hopes to get as much votes as her late husband (an adopted son of Bohol) who placed second to the former Senate President Marcelo Fernan (who hails from Cebu) during his last senatorial bid.

At a young age, Sonia already exhibited the traits of a natural leader and was a consistent honor student who graduated Magna Cum Laude from St. Joseph's College in Quezon City with a degree in Liberal Arts and Bachelor of Science in Education.

She was awarded as one of the Most Outstanding Students of the Philippines (MOSP) in 1964 and was a recipient of the Cardinal Santos Leadership Award for her achievements as a student leader and her involvement in the Student Catholic Action (SCA) and the National Union of Students of the Philippines (NUSP).

As a lover of the Theater and the Arts, she trained in speech and drama in London and was able to teach, act, direct and produce musicals and plays.

Sonia holds a masters degree in Communication Arts and in Social Psychology from the Ateneo de Manila University.

Together with her husband Raul, the Rocos were bestowed the Golden Parents' Award for 1995 by the Golden Mother and Father Foundation, Inc.

The three Bohol congressmen are challenged by former OIC Gov. Victor dela Serna to open their bank accounts including that of their immediate family to prove that they have not enriched themselves through their pork barrel allocations.

In a press statement, Dela Serna claimed that each congressman received an average of P50 million every year in pork barrel funds or a combined total of P1.05 billion considering the number of years representatives Edgar Chatto, Roberto Cajes and Eladio Jala had been in office.

Both Chatto and Cajes are running for re-election to serve their final three-year term while Jala is on his way out.

Dela Serna, in his press statement, could only present the alleged questionable purchase of second-hand computer units aside from the usual speculations of kickbacks in projects facilitated by the solons.

Dela Serna alleged that Chatto, Cajes and Jala have "spent through their pork barrel funds this year to buy obsolete and second-hand computers at the price of P80,000 per unit." These computers were reportedly acquired through the Department of Education.

Accordingly, these computers are actually worth P8,000.

The former OIC governor stated that he is ready to prepare a legal document for Chatto, Cajes and Jala to waive their rights under the Bank Secrecy Law.

With the waiver, bank accounts of the solons including those of their spouses and children can be scrutinized.

"In the event that no ill-gotten wealth is discovered," dela Serna stated, "I will apologize" personally to the three congressmen and that they are indeed "beyond reproach."

"HARRASSMENT"

Reacting to Dela Serna's statement, Rep. Chatto defended himself calling the former OIC governor's latest tirade as harassment.

Chatto criticized dela Serna for "generalizing" all congressmen as "thieves".

However, in another press statement as a rejoinder to Chatto's comment, dela Serna stated that a refusal to open their bank accounts to public scrutiny leads to "an escapable conclusion" that the congressmen are "hiding stolen money."

Residents and businessmen of Guindulman town fear for their lives as robbery-holdup suspect Ian Bautista and his group remain at large and are reportedly recruiting new members in the coastal town.

Two residents of Guindulman described to the Chronicle how stores, business establishments and households close down as early as 6 o'clock in the evening as they fear Bautista's group might strike. Identities of the two locales are withheld for security reasons.

They said residents of barangays Catungawan, Casbo, Bato, Bulawan and Guinacot have organized volunteer groups that conduct patrols during nighttime in order to secure their neighborhood as Bautista's group has been spotted several times aboard two motorcycles roaming their area.

Bautista has been tagged as prime suspect of a murder and hold-upping incident last January 9 in Catungawan, a barangay approximately three kilometers from Poblacion, Guindulman. The barangay has six volunteers who complement barangay tanods.
