U.S. federal prosecutors, by filing a criminal complaint, lay claim to a legal basis to make the request of the authorities in Hong Kong, the Post reported. The prosecutors now have 60 days to file an indictment and can then take steps to secure Snowden's extradition from Hong Kong for a criminal trial in the United States, the newspaper reported.

Snowden would be able to challenge the U.S. request for his extradition in court in Hong Kong, the Post reported.

The newspaper noted the U.S. extradition treaty with Hong Kong has an exception for political offenses, and that espionage has been viewed as a political offense.

Earlier, the Washington Post reported that U.S. prosecutors have filed a sealed criminal complaint charging Snowden with espionage, theft and conversion of government property. The Post also reported that the United States has asked Hong Kong to detain Snowden on a provisional arrest warrant.

The criminal complaint was filed in the Eastern District of Virginia, where Snowden's former employer, Booz Allen Hamilton, is located, the Post reported.

Documents leaked by Snowden revealed that U.S. security services had monitored data about phone calls from Verizon and Internet data from large companies such as Google and Facebook as part of counterterrorism efforts.

Edward Snowden

WASHINGTON, June 21 (Reuters) - The U.S. government has filed sealed criminal charges against former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden, who admitted leaking secrets about classified U.S. surveillance programs, U.S. sources said on Friday.

A U.S. Justice Department official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said a criminal complaint had been filed against Snowden, who disclosed documents detailing U.S. telephone and internet surveillance efforts.

Another U.S. source, also speaking on condition of anonymity, said the United States was preparing to seek Snowden's extradition from Hong Kong, where he is believed to be in hiding.

SLAVE LABOR CONTRIBUTES TO THE PRODUCTION OF AT LEAST 122 GOODS FROM 58 COUNTRIES WORLDWIDE.

Official U.S. government research identifies many products â€" such as diamonds from Africa, bricks from Brazil, and shrimp from Southeast Asia â€" as products that are commonly produced with slave labor. Around the world, people are forced to work with the threat of violence for little or no pay producing dozens of things we use every day, like soccer balls, flowers, and chocolate. MODERN SLAVERY GENERATES PROFIT OF OVER US $32 BILLION FOR SLAVEHOLDERS.

Modern slavery is profitable, generating at least US$32 billion in profits every year â€" more than the entire output of Iceland, Nicaragua, Rwanda, and Mongolia combined. And it isn’t just a problem in distant, poor countries; nearly half the total, an estimated $15.5 billion, is made in wealthy industrialized countries. SOURCE: INTERNATIONAL LABOR ORGANIZATION

THE VICTIMS OF SLAVERY CAN BE AS YOUNG AS FIVE OR SIX YEARS OLD.

Young children have their childhoods stolen from them. Teenagers who reach for a better life can find themselves tricked into accepting the offer of a job far away that turns into the nightmare of slavery. IT IS ESTIMATED THAT AT LEAST 20.9 MILLION PEOPLE ARE FORCED TO LIVE IN SLAVERY AROUND THE WORLD TODAY.

Many people think slavery was abolished years ago. But there are more people living in slavery today than the total number of people taken from Africa to America in the vast trans-Atlantic slave trade between the 17th and 19th centuries. And even a single person is one person too many. SOURCE: INTERNATIONAL LABOR ORGANIZATION

SLAVERY IS ILLEGAL IN ALMOST EVERY NATION ON EARTH BUT SLAVERY STILL EXISTS EVERYWHERE.

No matter where you are, it’s close to home. Modern slavery affects people in the world's richest and the world's poorest countries, within borders and across borders. Slavery can trap thousands in one place â€" like mines and factories â€" or happen at a small scale, where a single girl is trapped in a stranger’s home and forced to work without pay. LEARN MORE ABOUT MODERN SLAVERY

Today, people are living in slavery in countries all around the world. Slavery is hidden away in factories, on farms, and behind closed doors, in homes and other places in the cities and towns of the world’s richest and poorest nations. But with the power of a worldwide movement, social networks, and technologies, we can expose these hidden crimes â€" so that ours is the last generation that needs to fight the trade in human lives.

A "supermoon" is seen behind the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Sunday, May 6, 2012. A supermoon is the coincidence of a full moon (or a new moon) with the closest approach the moon makes to the Earth. (AP Photo/Victor R. Caivano)

Huge moon at moonrise

Usually the variation of the moon's distance is not readily apparent to observers viewing the moon directly.

Or is it?

When the perigee moon lies close to the horizon it can appear absolutely enormous. That is when the famous "moon illusion" combines with reality to produce a truly stunning view. For reasons not fully understood by astronomers or psychologists, a low-hanging moon looks incredibly large when hovering near to trees, buildings and other foreground objects. The fact that the moon will be much closer than usual this weekend will only serve to amplify this strange effect.

So a perigee moon, either rising in the east at sunset or dropping down in the west at sunrise might seem to make the moon appear so close that it almost appears that you could touch it.

Father Robert DeGrandis is a member of the Society of Saint Joseph serving the worldwide Catholic charismatic community since 1979.  Fr. DeGrandis has delivered his central message of God’s love and the healing power of forgiveness from little country churches to overflowing stadiums in more than 33 countries.  Over the years his messages have been broadcast on radio and television.

Supermoon's big tides

In addition, the near coincidence of Sunday's full moon with perigee will result in a dramatically large range of high and low ocean tides. The highest tides will not, however, coincide with the perigee moon but will actually lag by up to a couple of days depending on the specific coastal location.

For example, for New York City, high water (6.3 feet or 1.9 meters) at The Battery comes at 8:58 p.m. EDT on Sunday, or more than 12 hours after perigee. From Cape Fear, N.C., the highest tide (6.5 feet or 1.9 m) will be attained at 9:06 p.m. EDT on Monday, while at Boston Harbor a peak tide height of 12.3 feet (3.7 m) comes at 12:48 a.m. EDT on Tuesday, almost 2 days after the time of perigee.

STONEHENGE, England (AP) â€" Police say more than 20,000 celebrants have gathered at the famed Stonehenge monument to mark the summer solstice.

The cloud cover Friday morning prevented bright sunshine at dawn of the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere but a joyous spirit prevailed.

Police say there were fewer arrests than usual with 22 people taken into custody, most for drug-related offenses.

The solstice has typically drawn a wide and varied crowd to the mysterious set of standing stones whose purpose remains unclear.

The ancient stone circle on the Salisbury Plain about 80 miles (130 kilometers) southwest of London, was built in three phases between 3000 B.C. and 1600 B.C.

While the exact time of the full moon theoretically lasts just a moment, that moment is imperceptible to casual observers. The moon will appear full a couple of days before and after the actual full moon most will speak of seeing the nearly full moon as "full":  the shaded strip is so narrow, and changing in apparent width so slowly, that it is hard for the naked eye to tell in a casual glance whether it’s present or on which side it is.

During Sunday's supermoon, the moon will appear about 12.2 percent larger than it will look on Jan. 16, 2014, when it will be farthest from the Earth during its apogee.

The largest full moon of 2013, a so-called "supermoon," will light up the night sky this weekend, but there's more to this lunar delight than meets the eye.

On Sunday, June 23, at 7 a.m. EDT (1100 GMT), the moon will arrive at perigee â€" the point in its orbit bringing it closest to Earth), a distance of 221,824 miles (356,991 kilometers). Now the moon typically reaches perigee once each month (and on some occasions twice), with their respective distances to Earth varying by 3 percent.

But Sunday's lunar perigee will be the moon's closest to Earth of 2013. And 32 minutes later, the moon will officially turn full. The close timing of the moon's perigee and its full phase are what will bring about the biggest full moon of the year, a celestial event popularly defined by some as a "supermoon."

His appeals to return to the core of the Christian message are downright biblical: the Church stands for the incarnation of God and the "scandal of the cross," and it should not adapt to the world. In contrast to his predecessors and in keeping with Latin American precedent, Francis looks at the world from the point of view of mankind. At the same time, the Jesuit is completely aware of different theological traditions and systems. This style also marks his sermons, strongly influenced by Bible stories. They come across as pious but very lively, and often include improvised anecdotes.

Indications of major change

Francis has his own way of tackling change. In mid-April, he appointed a panel of eight cardinals from all over the world to advise him on a reform of the Vatican's power structure. The panel, led by Honduran Cardinal Oscar Andres Rodriguez Maradiaga, includes German Cardinal Reinhard Marx - but only one cardinal currently serving at the Vatican. The panel's first meeting in October will show in more detail where the pope plans to lead the Church and its headquarters.

The question remains, however, whether Francis actually has the strength to push for comprehensive change. He has but a small window of opportunity to initiate and launch reforms - after all, he's already 76 years old.
#22049
Expectations for reforms of the Vatican's fossilized administrative apparatus, the Roman Curia, remain high. Currently, departments within the system often work side by side or even against each other, and the Curia is often seen as posturing toward the rest of the Catholic world. Vatileaks and the scandals surrounding the Vatican Bank are prime examples of this dilapidated system.

In recent private talks with Latin American clerics, Pope Francis referred to these issues for the first time. The pontiff mentioned restorationist groups within the Church, he spoke of "pantheists" and lamented corruption, and he referred to the existence of a "gay lobby" in the Vatican. The pope also pointed out that ahead of the conclave, nearly all the cardinals had pushed for reforms of the Curia.
#22050
Where to begin?

Pope Francis' two meetings with his retired predecessor Benedict are among the defining images that immediately come to mind when thinking of his first weeks in office. They were important, as they stood for what was once completely unthinkable: a sitting Roman Catholic pope and his predecessor, peacefully united in prayer and conversation.

#22051

From the start, Francis has shown he has a new way of doing things

One hundred days into his pontificate, it's clear change is on the horizon for the Catholic Church and the way it is perceived. But it's not clear in each and every case how things will develop, and reforms are not likely to include core Church tenets: the role of women in the Church or celibacy, to name a couple examples.
#22052
Close to the people

Increasingly, the focus has moved from outward appearances to attentiveness to the message. The new pope has urged reform of the global economic system and has chastised excesses in the financial markets. He laments a culture of prosperity, a dominance of consumption as well as a "culture of extravagance."

#22053
Following his election, rumors of a four-word papal quote made the rounds: "The carnival is over." Pope Francis was reportedly not only referring to heavy brocade robes and costly red papal shoes, and he was certainly not targeting his predecessors - his remark merely foreshadowed a collective new earnestness.

In his first appearance 100 days ago, the pope described himself as hailing from "the other end of the world." The new head of the Catholic Church still finds difficult the manner in which parts of the Vatican prefer to interpret the papacy. The former Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio regards himself a man of the people, more a Bishop of Rome than a remote pope. His choice of name was an indicator, too - the great Francis. It resonates with more than simplicity in appearance and perspectives for the poor. In his way, Francis of Assisi was a capricious early 13th century revolutionary.
#22054

Pope Francis has shunned the traditional red shoes
#22055
Pope Francis does not reside in the Apostolic Palace high above St. Peter's Square, even 100 days after his election. Instead, he intends to stay in a suite at the Vatican's Santa Marta guesthouse indefinitely.

The spectacular aspect of this decision can not be stressed enough. Three months ago, anyone who would have predicted that the new pope would break with time-honored Vatican customs would have been labeled crazy, possibly even a militant critic of Rome. Francis himself has said that he likes to be surrounded by people, and has called the palace too remote. He has also mentioned the example of Jesus as a "poor leader."

Late strikes from Odil Ahmedov and Ulugbek Bakaev raised excitement to fever pitch but the clock quickly ticked through injury time and the former Soviet republic were kept waiting for a first foray to football’s biggest stage.

The towering Nagoya Grampus striker justified the substitution when he saved the day with a clinical, 83rd-minute header that not only sent the 80,000 crowd wild, but also dispatched his team to next year’s World Cup. -- AFP

In Tashkent, Uzbekistan needed a hatful of goals but it went behind when a botched pass out of defense gave Abdulqadir Ilyas an easy chance on 36 minutes.

Uzbekistan took up residence in Qatari territory and they finally got their reward through substitute striker Bahodir Nasimov’s toe-poke on 60 minutes.

Oleg Zoteev’s dribble and shot put Uzbekistan in front on 72 minutes, and the massed fans at Bunyodkor Stadium dared to dream when Nasimov scored their third from close range two minutes later.

Iran started the second period with more ambition and on 59 minutes, it was suddenly in front thanks to a defensive howler from Kim Young-Gwon and the alert thinking of Reza Ghoochannejhad.

Defender Kim failed to make a simple clearance on the touchline and had his pocket picked by Ghoochannejhad, who scampered goalwards and bent a left-footed shot around Jung Sung-Ryong.

South Korea pressed desperately for the equalizer and Kim Young-Gwon nearly made amends for his mistake but put a free header wide near the end. Lee Keun-Ho also came close to scoring in injury time.

"It was a very difficult match. We knew that we played a great team," Queiroz said. "My team played with a realistic approach, to try and wait for a weak point in the Korean team and with a counter-attacking attitude."

Iran, South Korea and Australia now join Japan, the Asian Cup-holder who booked its ticket a fortnight ago, at next year’s World Cup as the only countries to have qualified alongside host Brazil.

Although all four Asian qualifiers are familiar names at the World Cup, the year-long elimination process has been hard-fought and came down to the last week of the final group stage.

Tensions were high on Tuesday and especially in Ulsan, where South Korea had promised to "make life painful" for Iran and to draw "tears of blood" from their captain, Javad Nekounam.

Ex-Middlesbrough striker Lee Dong-Gook tested Rahman Ahmadi with a stinging attempt from distance but despite dominating the first half, South Korea struggled to create clear chances.

Another, @kcs9618, said: "I felt awful when seeing the Iranian players running around the stadium with their flag. But it felt even more awful seeing South Koreans throwing bottles towards them."

It emerged after that South Korea had also qualified as Uzbekistan, despite beating Qatar, 5-1, just missed out on goal difference. The Uzbeks will now face Jordan, a 1-0 victor over Oman thanks to Ahmad Ibrahim’s 57th-minute goal, in a playoff.

Australia left it late before substitute striker Josh Kennedy earned a 1-0 win over Iraq in Sydney, enough to take the Socceroos through to their third successive World Cup.

"I’m sorry it wasn’t pretty, but we beat them... Let’s look at the positives tonight -- we’re going to Brazil!" said captain Lucas Neill.

"There was no respect for the opposing team. They were not merely celebrating their victory. They stuck their tongues out at the crowd and jeered at them. They insulted and mocked South Korean soccer. The spirit of fair play and sportsmanship were completely forgotten," the paper added.

"Those who are only good at playing games but have no respect for sportsmanship do not deserve to go to the World Cup."

But some South Korean fans took to microblogging site Twitter with a different view of events.

"The water bottles thrown out to Iranian player showed to the whole world how ugly we are as a nation," tweeted one, @ulgongja.

SINGAPORE -- Asian giants Iran, South Korea and Australia scrambled into next year’s World Cup on Tuesday after scenes of crowd anger and high tension on the final night of group qualifying.

Irate South Korean fans hurled water bottles and other debris after Iran booked its ticket with a 1-0 smash-and-grab win in Ulsan, following a tetchy buildup between the two teams.

South Korea also accused Iran coach Carlos Queiroz of making an obscene hand gesture at his rival Choi Kang-Hee, and said they expected a FIFA investigation. No comment was immediately available from Queiroz.

A South Korean newspaper condemned Iran’s players and officials, but made little mention of their own fans’ poor behavior.

"When their victory was confirmed, all the Iranian players ran towards the South Korean bench, pumping their fists and making insulting gestures," the Sport Chosun daily wrote in an editorial.

Agyrophobics have a fear of crossing streets, highways and other thoroughfares, or a fear of thoroughfares themselves. This, of course, makes it very difficult to live comfortably in a city. The word comes from the Greek gyrus which means turning or whirling as the phobic avoids the whirl of traffic. The phobia covers several categories, wherein sufferers may fear wide roads specifically down to suburban single lane streets, and can also include fearing jaywalking or crossing anywhere on a street, even a designated intersection. This phobia is considered independent from the fear of cars. -- http://listverse.com/

This might be the strangest way of keeping aggressive men at bay, but we have to give it major points for being clever.

"Super sexy, summertime anti-pervert full-leg-of-hair stockings, essential for all young girls going out," @HappyZhangJiang describes the item on China's popular microblogging service, Sina Weibo.

They remind us somewhat of the less playful, more functional "anti-rape" lingerie developed recently by three engineering students in India. That garment is wired to deliver an electric shock to sexual attackers and can send an alert message, with GPS coordinates, to the attacked woman's friends and family.

The idea behind the hair stockings, we're guessing, is that lewd gropers wouldn't come anywhere near you. Tongue-in-cheek, but inventive nonetheless.
