Filipinos in Belgium can now look forward to having freshly made Pinoy dishes as a Filipino restaurant finally opens in Brussels.

The Le Duc de Fer restaurant which has a seating capacity of 65, boasts of Filipino and Belgian dishes prepared by a Filipino chef, Walter Coneras.

Manager Olive Gravidez informed Balitang Europe that they serve tapsilog, tocilog, longsilog and arroz caldo during breakfast which are all-time favorites of Filipinos.

"Bukas na kasi kami ng 7:30 ng umaga kaya maraming kababayan natin ang dumadaan dito sa restaurant para mag-almusal (We are already open at 7:30 so many of our fellow Filipinos drop by our restaurant to have breakfast)," she said.

But Chef Coneras admitted that crepe (pancakes for Filipinos) remains the number one choice for Belgians in the morning. That’s why he just makes sure that all customers will be satisfied with every dish he prepares.

"Inilalagay ko ang sarili ko sa lugar ng mga customers. Kaya sinisigurado kong masasarapan sila sa lahat ng aking inihahanda (I put myself in the shoes of all the customers so I make sure they will find everything I prepare delicious)," he said.

On the other hand, proprietor of Le Duc De Fer Candido Gravidez stated that he still aims to introduce a variety of our native dishes to Belgians.

"Sa ngayon ang aking objective ay kung paano ko maiintroduce ang ating mga produktong Pilipino. Pero sa aking pag-uumpisa, nakikita ko na nagustuhan ng mga Belgians ito (As of now, my main objective is to introduce Filipino products to the Belgians but with this start I see that they will like them)," he confirmed.

His statement was supported by Henry Desmet, a Belgian engineer who enjoyed eating lumpia (spring rolls).

"This is the first time I tasted Philippine food that’s very good, very nice, very tasty", he said.

Olive Gravidez confirmed that in a few weeks time, they will launch palabok (rice noodles topped with seafood sauce) and halo-halo (shave ice with mixed sweet fruit and milk).

The restaurant which is open from 7:30 am to 8 pm everyday assures its customers of 3 great deals which will definitely set them apart from their competitors----good food, personalized service and value for their money.

SILVER SPRING, Maryland - It’s been called the “Mother of all Philippine festivals”. Carrying its infectious drumbeat and shouts of “hala bira!”, Fil-Americans from Washington D.C., Maryland and Northern Virginia braved a light snow dusting and freezing temperatures to stage the Ati-Atihan and Sinulog here, marking the feast of the Sto. Niño.

The Christ the King Church community center was filled to capacity. Over a hundred Fil-Am devotees of the Sto. Niño or image of the Child Jesus, joined by curious American friends, celebrated the annual religious feast commemorating the Philippine’s conversion from paganism to Christianity in the 16th century.

“It is a very important Philippine tradition and our history,” said lawyer Arnedo Valera of the Migrant Heritage Commission (MHC).

Fraternity is something that humanity itself will contribute as an expression of the third aspect of divinity, basing it on right contact and right reaction to contact. Thus there will be developed gradually the true life-theme of humanity, which is brotherhood, founded on divine origin (equality) and leading to a free and true expression of divinity (liberty).

                                           How We Started

1973 A year after the Philippines archipelago WRIT OF HABEAS CORPUS was suspended, the whole country was under MARTIAL LAW of then PRES. FERDINAND E. MARCOS.

At Bukidnon, a province of Mindanao island at the southern part of the archipelago, the CENTRAL MINDANAO UNIVERSITY is located. And this is the school where SIGMA UPSILON - UPSILON LAMBDA Fraternity & Sorority was organized underground.

The fifty (52) students who conceptualized the group did not intend to organize a fraternity. Nobody among them knew what a fraternity was. Their ideas was to solidify a group TO HELP ONE ANOTHER IN TIMES OF NEEDS & PROTECT ONE ANOTHER IN TIMES OF HARM. (Named the group "UNITY OF LIVES ASSOCIATION").

The 52 students all boys were discussing off their bad feelings and sad experiences at SUNRISE MENS HALL DORMITORY as harassment of senior students to the new students was so rampant.

The only professional person among the group MARFORI AGUS, a teacher who listened to the sad experiences of the boys all freshmen then. The group was filled with enthusiasm and were determined to unite when a suggestion to form a group was carried out at ROOM 207of the dormitory.

Their minds were focused in polishing the conceived idea, UNITY. But one thing overlooked was the determination & sincerity of everyone for the cause. Finally, a series of exchange paddling was approved by the group, a test to measure everyones determination and sincerity.

Some places of importance in the foundation of the group are; MT. MUSUAN (Musuan Peak) about four (4) km. Northeast of the campus, & the heart shaped LAKE APO, about twelve (12) km. Southwest of the campus.

On the other hand, the places of the series of exchange paddling where done at; CMU COFFE PLANTATION adjacent to the DAIRY RANCH; old bridge of the BEEF RANCH; CMU RUBBER PLANTATION; CMU SUGAR PLANTATION; CMU WATER RESERVOIR; FOOT OF MT. MUSUAN; Then back to the CMU SUGAR PALNTATION & RUBBER PLANTATION (in sequence).

The final of the series was set as agrees at LAKE APO on AUGUST 16, 1973 Of the 52 students who started the organization, only18 made it to the finals. But for unknown reasons, two (2) of them resigned and waived their loyalty to other fraternity. As merit of loyalty, only sixteen (16) were named in the official set of founders.

On the same year, the set of founders initiated the first two ULPHANS FLOR MURILLO from MUSUAN BUKIDNON & BEATRIZ RAMOS from Banaybanay, Davao Oriental. One of that SIGMA UPSILON - UPSILON LAMBDA expanded to Cagayan de Oro City in 1974.

The effort of KNIGHTS MARFORI AGUS, EUGENE AGUS, JOSE ACERA JR. & REY AGUILOR (one of the pioneers), were not futile. After some visitations with their old pals enrolled in different schools of the City, they succeeded to recruit. One of those recruited was RUEL WAGA helped in the recruitment by convincing his friend to join with him.

On September 16, 1974, twenty four (24) male & female college students from Cagayan de Oro College, Liceo de Cagayan & Xavier University where initiated and rites held at BALOY, TABLON, Cagayan de Oro College schools was named BETA CHAPTER with Cagayan de Oro College as the host school.

SIR KNIGHT RUEL WAGA headed the BETA CHAPTER, as first SUPREME KNIGHT. His emphasis was focused on the true meaning of BROTHERHOOD, SISTERHOOD & DICIPLINE. He held his position for four (4) years, and was unselfish dedication and deep concern to each and every one of them to the organization itself.

Like wild fire, the spirit of UNITY, BROTHERHOOD, SISTERHOOD and FELLOWSHIP spread over MINDANAO and the VISAYAS REGION SIR KNIGHT ROEL WAGA's rapport was so efficient to reach different cities by recruiting and initiating new aspirants and organizing new chapters. His achievements made the fraternity and sorority organizers of his time.

The GAMMA CHAPTER in Iligan was mentored by Sir Knight Ruel Waga. Assisting him was Sir Knight Dioscoro Ratunil Jr. ( One of the Founders ) and lady Ulphan Norma Ramos. Epsilon and Zeta Chapter was assisted by Sir Knight Milnor . Linan. Sir Knigh junnie Vallejos, Sir Knight George Dadulo Sir Knight Cyrus Manla, and Sir Knight Ric Magno. A lot more helped in the expansion of the organization.

To mentioned, Ulphan Norma Ramos , organized the Delta Chapter at Cabacan North Cotabato. University of Southern Mindanao Sir Knight Wilson Gomez organized the PSI Chapter at Bay.

Yesterday is pain and agony, torture and mockery.
We strove to be a noble and strove ourselves worthy of being a noble.
We made ourselves a strong foundation, a ladder to our ambition.
We made ourselves a living sacrifice to break the cage we're in.
And the Chain on our wrist is the symbol of being a slave.

So here's our ambition and here's our success.
For yesterday was just a nightmare a rummage to forget.
Today is the tomorrow we dreamed yesterday.
So let us burn the traces of the past and be a KNIGHT | ULPHAN
for the rest of our lives.

Duero - Bohol / Municipality of Duero
January 24, 2008, 11:36:46 AM

           Municipality of Duero

        Simbahan

        Mercado sa Duero

Duero is located in the southeastern part of the Visayan, the land is plain and situated near the sea. It is ten kilometers from jagna amd fifteen kilometers from Guindulman, its adjacent towns and two towns of Sierra Bullones and Pilar, north of the town.

The town of Duero is erected in February 11, 1863 by a decree of the superior government - Governor General Rafael Echaue. The tenientes of the barangays or barrios of Guinsularan and Madua had initiated the course of action to the creation of the town and parish of Duero, Bohol. The toponym of the new town and parish was named after a very important and beautiful river in northeastern part of Spain called Duero.

This consists of the titlle of the new town Duero for having proven that the barrios of Guinsularan and Madua which  before belongs to the towns of Guindulman and Jagna meet the circumtances and requirements provided for by law was erected into a town with its own civil and spiritual jurisdiction. The Council of Administration, Office of the Governor and Royal Vice Patron established the barrios Guinsularan and Madua into the town of Duero with civil and spiritual jurisdiction independent from its respective matrix Guindulman and Jagna, District of Cebu.

His Excellency Politico-Military Governor of the Visayas was authorized and put in charge of marking and, through the Governor District of Cebu, set the landmarks upon the rural boundaries of the new town.

Today, Duero is among the many bustling towns east of the province of Bohol. It has stood the test of time and today the see, the sturdy branches and the life giving leaves of the vision of its early forefeathers have borne fruits. Duero is fast becoming the province tourist destination, has established economic stability and self-reliance, pulsating with life, steered by new breed of leaders who have the same fate and vision of their fore bearers. Duero now is a paradise reclaimed where one would wish to build his home and stay forever.

So far, so good.

May the best man win, sabi nga nila.

"Five out of 12 correct rounds" is a failure for the three judges.

God bless us all. Hanggang

MANILA, Philippines -- This time, trainer Freddie Roach wants to make sure there will be no hassle and distraction as Manny Pacquiao prepares for his world title showdown with Juan Manuel Marquez.

Roach, usually accommodating to fans, has decided to keep his Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles off limits to the public throughout the Filipino ring icon’s training for Pacquiao-Marquez II on March 15.

The closed-door policy adopted by Roach was reported by Ricardo Lois of Boxing Confidential on Sunday.

Obviously, Roach, the two-time Trainer of the Year, has learned his lessons.

Whenever Pacquiao works out at the gym, inconspicuously located at the second floor of a semi-concrete building at Vine Street, fans, Latinos and US-based Filipinos alike usually come in droves to watch, seek autographs or request for photo sessions.

Roach also had to deal with Pacman fans when his prized ward trained at Rex “Wakee” Salud’s gym in Cebu City last year during the early phase of his training for his rematch against Marco Antonio Barrera last year.

Knowing that Pacquiao is in for the toughest fight of his career against the Mexican World Boxing Council super featherweight titlist, Roach wants to keep Manny focused on his buildup.

The bespectacled Roach also wants to prevent possible spies, posing as Hispanic fans, from the Marquez camp invading the Wild Card gym.

Pacquiao started his training at Wild Card on Wednesday (Thursday in Manila) and was reported to be in good shape with his weight hovering between 138-140 pounds.

The Pacquiao entourage is expected to motor to Las Vegas less than a week before the bout dubbed “The Unfinished Business” is held at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino. Roy Luarca

SINGAPORE -- Singapore scrambled two F-16 fighter jets to intercept a civilian plane that flew into the city-state's airspace without permission, the defense ministry said Wednesday.

The warplanes sprung into action at 6:42 pm (1042 GMT) on Tuesday to intercept the Cessna 208 plane, which was escorted to land at Changi Airport, defense ministry spokesman Colonel Darius Lim said in a statement.

The Straits Times newspaper reported that the incident led authorities to shut down Singapore's commercial airspace for 50 minutes, disrupting flights in and out of Changi.

Lim said the civilian aircraft "was heading towards Singapore airspace without an approved flight plan."

He said the Singapore Police Force was investigating the accident and that the Republic of Singapore Air Force "continues to maintain a high state of readiness."

No other details were given, but the Straits Times said the turboprop engine plane was believed to be flying from the Thai resort island of Koh Samui.

Singapore is a staunch ally of the United States in the global fight against "terrorism" and officials have repeatedly warned that the wealthy island-nation remains a top target by militants.

In August 2003, two air force jets intercepted a Portuguese-registered civilian aircraft that entered into Singapore airspace, the Straits Times said.

The plane's 61-year-old pilot had run into electrical problems and tried to land at an airbase before two A4 Skyhawks intercepted it.

Air forces worldwide have been on alert for unauthorized civilian flights due to fears of a repeat of the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United

Unfazed by alleged plots to overthrow her government, President Arroyo flew to Switzerland Tuesday afternoon to attend the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos and kick off her seven-day working visit to the Western Europe country and Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

"Global engagement and a robust foreign policy are central pillars of our plan for a safe and strong Philippines. We depart today (Tuesday) for Europe and the Middle East to continue to advance the strategic interests of the Philippines and press the need for closer economic, political and social relations between the Philippines and the world," Mrs. Arroyo said in her departure statement.

At the WEF in the ski resort city of Davos, the President said she is scheduled to meet with a number of world leaders "who are partners with the Philippines in bringing peace to Mindanao, aid assistance to our poor and greater security in the fight against terrorism."

Mrs. Arroyo said she will "relentless" promote the Philippines to foreign investors and businessmen during her trip.

"For the first time in a generation, the Philippine economy is on a path to sustained economic growth, creating millions of new jobs and billions of new pesos in revenue to invest in our people and our infrastructure to build up our nation. Foreign investment is central to that progress. We are proud of the results of our ability to attract more and more business to the Philippines the last seven years," she added.

The President said she will also meet with the International Board of Advisors, which is composed of the world’s top business leaders, to help "communicate the dynamism and the very positive new environment for business that is being created in our nation."

The President is expected to arrive in Zurich 11 p.m. Tuesday (6 a.m. Wednesday Manila time) for her four-day visit to Switzerland that will be highlighted by her attendance at the annual WEF.

More than 2,500 participants from 88 countries, including 27 heads of state or government, 113 Cabinet members, along with religious and media leaders, and heads of non-governmental organizations, are expected to attend the forum.

President Arroyo is also expected to address the high-level plenary session of the Swiss Congress.

On Saturday morning the President will leave for Dubai to meet with top businessmen in UAE.

"This is also a country that employs hundreds of thousands of our countrymen and women. We will work to ensure that they continue to enjoy the positive working conditions that they deserve. In our meetings with these fellow Filipinos we will assure them that their contributions to their families and their country are recognized and appreciated," she said.

Mrs. Arroyo added: "These visits are part of the commitment of our administration to global engagement that broadens and deepens our ties, strengthens our security alliances, encourages trade and investment agreements, and protects our overseas Filipino workers."

Urges joint effort to ease recession fears

Meanwhile Agence France-Presse reported that Mrs. Arroyo also called on Tuesday for a concerted effort to ease fears that the US economy is headed for recession.

Speaking as she left for the annual meeting of the WEF in Davos, Switzerland, Arroyo said she would be looking for ways to alleviate the impact of a recession in the United States -- the Philippines biggest trading partner -- in her talks with other leaders and business chiefs.

In Manila, the stock market plunged 5.5 percent for its biggest single-day loss in five months as investors dumped stocks in what many analysts described as panic selling.

"It is important we work together, especially now when we face not only the high price of oil but the weakening of the economy in America that could have an effect on the Philippines," Arroyo told her cabinet before leaving.

The United States is the biggest market for Philippine exports and is home to millions of overseas-based Filipino workers whose remittances help prop up the domestic economy. With a report from Agence France-Presse

The Philippine Star

Sports officials need not look far in their search for Filipinos who may help fuel the country’s ambitious campaign in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Forbes Magazine recently published its distinguished list of billionaires from around the world. And for the first time in years, Filipinos were among them â€" Jaime Zobel de Ayala and Henry Sy who were in the top 350 with identical net worth of $2.6 billion.

The Forbes list did not escape the eyes of Bacolod Rep. Monico Puentevella, chef-de-mission of the RP delegation to the Beijing Olympics in August.

Forbes also released the list of the 40 wealthiest Filipinos.

"That’s the list where they all come from," said Puentevella of the potential donors to the RP Olympic campaign being spearheaded by President Arroyo and First Gentleman Mike Arroyo.

Puentevella is currently preparing a short list of individuals that may be tapped for the Olympic program expected to cost more than a million dollars.

"It’s not yet complete," said Puentevella of his star-studded wish list. While the families of Zobel de Ayala, Sy and Lucio Tan ($1.6 billion) led the Top 40 list of the wealthiest Filipinos, there were names that ring a bell when it comes to sports.

These include container port magnate and golf patron Enrique Razon Jr. (No. 8 with $820 million), San Miguel big boss and former basketball godfather Eduardo "Danding" Cojuangco (No. 13 with $540 million), Philippine Basketball Association team (Alaska Milk) owner and triathlete Wilfred Steven Uytengsu (No. 31 with $60 million), and PLDT/Smart chairman and Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president Manny V. Pangilinan (No. 38 with $35 million).

Pangilinan has already pledged his full support to the Philippine boxing and taekwondo teams not only for the Beijing Olympics but also all the way to the 2012 London Olympics.

"I’m still talking to some of them this week. Give me two weeks to finalize everything," said Puentevella, hoping that those who helped the Filipino athletes during the 2005 Manila SEA Games, will be around once again.

THE Theft and Robbery Section (TRS) arrested five people, four of them women, at the corner of Legazpi and Colon Sts. in Barangay Sto. Nino, Cebu City last Saturday night.

TRS Chief Michael Bastes, in a report submitted to the operations section, identified the suspected thieves as Jomar L. Alvares, 36; Ritdhell S. Sanchez, 21; Juvy T. Montalban, alias Juvy Nunez, 31; and Karen V. Cruz, 20.

They came from Cagayan de Oro City and were staying temporarily in Sitio Kalubihan, Banawa, Cebu City. They were arrested at 9 p.m. Saturday after the team found them allegedly loitering in the area.

IDs

The five failed to show identification cards, so the police took them to the TRS Office at the Camp Sotero Cabahug for questioning.

At the TRS office, the police reportedly found in their possessions documents owned by other people, cellular phones with several SIM packs and a credit card under the name of a man residing in Butuan City.

There is also a check pay to the order of a known lawyer in Cebu.

Because of the evidence confiscated from them, the five were placed under arrest.

Montalban, in an interview at the stockade, denied they were pickpockets.

Sinulog

She said they came to Cebu City to take part in the Sinulog festivities.

Meanwhile, three men from Barangay Tambolilid, Ormoc City were also arrested by the TRS after they were caught victimizing a woman who was watching the Sinulog parade in Barangay Lorega at 11 a.m. yesterday.

TRS arrested Archie Tomada, 25; Fernando Valera,31, and Nick Alquino, 29, with the help of the Barangay Intelligence Network members in the area.

Tomada told reporters they arrived at dawn yesterday on board an inter-island vessel.

He pointed to a certain Allan, who escaped during the operation, as the one who was about to victimize the unidentified woman.

He said they were not aware that Allan is a pickpocket until they arrived in the city.

He said it was his first time to visit Cebu City supposedly

CEBU’S twin fiesta celebrations stretched over 14 hours with no major snags, and even the only thing organizers couldn’t controlâ€"bad weatherâ€"failed to drive the crowds away.

No major alarms disrupted the religious and cultural activities, from Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal’s mass at 6 a.m. to the end of the Sinulog grand parade at 7:30 p.m.

“It’s terrific, the Sinulog is world-class. The choreography, imagination and execution just gets better and better every year,” said Sen. Manuel Roxas II, who watched the entire parade from the grandstand, said the rest of the country can learn from the Cebu experience.

“It’s a tribute to all the Cebuanos for staying focused and being united. If we all do well, I think the same thing can happen to our country,” he told reporters after the Sinulog’s grand finale.

Roxas also witnessed the exchange of pleasantries between Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña and Gov. Gwen Garcia, amid a conflict over an aborted land exchange deal.

After seeing some 30,000 revelers enjoy the Sinulog 2008 parade and grand finale, Osmeña said the City’s investments in the festival have paid off.

Osmeña said he was impressed with the improvements he saw in the parade, including the stage and production numbers patterned after shows in Las Vegas, which cost organizers P1.3 million.

Vegas trip

“That is something new. We always want it to look different every year... that’s why I said it’s a good investment to send people to Las Vegas,” he said, referring to the Sinulog Foundation Inc. (SFI) officials’ trip to Nevada in the United States last year to observe the shows there.

The mayor was also happy with the crowd turnout and the participation of more contingents from other towns and provinces.

He congratulated the Cebuanos for cooperating and behaving to make Sinulog 2008 successful, saying the credit goes to all Cebuanos, and not just the organizers and city officials.

“That is what’s special about Cebu. We don’t look down on other places unlike Manila. We’re so open to the out-of-towners and that’s something different here. They feel that they are welcome because that is our culture,” Osmeña added.

But for the next Sinulog, the mayor wants organizers to put more emphasis on the Sinulog Festival Queen competition, saying last Saturday night’s contest was underrated.

The search for the most graceful and beautiful female lead dancer is rich in terms of cultural and aesthetic value, with all lead dancers parading in their costumes. It is even better than the Ms. Philippines pageant, Osmeña said, but it was overlooked and not given enough publicity.

Stagecraft

Before he could rest after the day’s exertions, one of the organizers was already thinking of what can be done better next year.

SFI Executive Director Ricky Ballesteros said they will change the design of the stage next year in such a way that water will drain to the ground after the rain, allowing the dancers to perform on stage without slipping.

“Every year, we have to look for something new to improve the Sinulog. The stage would be one thing we have to improve because the dancers cannot perform there when it’s raining. So maybe we can put holes on the stage so the water drains to the ground,” he told Sun.Star Cebu.

Except for two brief encounters between the warring Crips and Bloods gangs on the streets of T. Padilla and B. Rodriguez, and several reports about drunk persons, the Sinulog was generally peaceful and orderly, Cebu City Police Office Director Patrocinio Comendador said last night.

There were no major alarms, he added.

As of 3 p.m., the Fuente Osmeña Police Station recorded only two cases of pickpockets, while one other case reached the Waterfront Police Station’s desk.

Less crime

Compared last year, the Cebu City police chief said, the number of criminal incidents declined dramatically. As of noon time in last year’s parade, Comendador recalled, there were more than 20 incidents of pickpockets and petty theft cases received by Fuente police.

For Comendador and Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 Director Ronald Roderos, the success of yesterday’s celebration can be attributed to the “Cebuano spirit” and the public’s cooperation in keeping the festivity peaceful and orderly.

Aside from the sector commanders assigned by the Cebu City office, Director Roderos also designated officers from his directorial staff as sector supervisors, to help Comendador.

Roderos told reporters he did not want the Cebu City police chief to be overworked, which was why his officials, all ranked senior superintendent, were deployed throughout the carousel route. Roderos himself inspected the parade route yesterday morning, calling the attention of police officers who did not wear their uniforms properly.

He also talked to members of the Alpha Kappa Rho (Akrho) fraternity after learning that someone tried to burn their float.

Junrey Tindoy, Akrho president of the Cebu supreme council, said four men wearing cloth masks opened fire at their brothers who were putting the finishing touches on their float at 2:30 a.m. yesterday.

Full alert

Four men on two motorcycles suddenly appeared and pointed a gun at the guard of the San Fernando Funeral Homes, which is operated by Akrho regional president Richard Buscaino.

They then hurled gasoline at the flowers atop the float and tossed a lighted cigarette on top of it, so that it caught fire.

No one was hurt, but the incident left two gunshot holes on the float. Asked if this discouraged them from continuing with the parade, Tindoy said the incident only strengthened the fraternity’s resolve to participate in the Sinulog.

Comendador congratulated the Cebu City police and back-up teams from the Regional Mobile Group 7 and Regional Training School 7 for their sacrifice. They were on the streets as early as 5:45 a.m. and stayed until the parade ended around 7:30 p.m.

Cebu’s police forces were on full alert since noon last Friday. All stations were ordered to tighten security measures of “vital installations, economic key points, places of convergence and other probable vulnerable targets.”

Police chiefs in Lapu-Lapu, Toledo, Bogo, Danao, Talisay, Tabuelan, Santander, Argao, Oslob and Naga were ordered to pay special attention to terminals and piers where tourists and locals arrived to witness the grand parade in Cebu City. (LCR/JST/

A physically challenged Filipino has proven that there is life after losing an arm.

Joebel Gurang is the star guitarist of Pinoy scholars studying at Wageningen University in Wageningen, The Netherlands.

There are about 80 Filipino scholars in the Netherlands. They came from the Philippines and other countries to take up their Masters or Doctorate in Philosophy degrees in the different universities here. Gurang, who is studying Masters in Communications, is one of them.

In a recent gathering of Pinoy scholars at the Philippine embassy in The Hague, the guests and students themselves stood in awe as Gurang strummed his guitar, providing the accompaniment to a musical skit that the Wageningen scholars presented.

Gurang lost half of his right arm when he was 11 years old due to a New Year’s Eve accident involving firecrackers. He doesn't want to discuss it anymore.

"I got this sadly from the New Year’s celebration back in 1988. I was eleven then. It’s a long story. It got amputated kasi medyo grabe ang itsura (because it looked horrivble)," Gurang said.

But four years after the accident, he developed an interest in the guitar. His physical disability didn’t stop him from trying this seemingly impossible venture.

So from the age of 15, Gurang studied how to manipulate the world’s most popular musical instrument, to the point that he was able to master the chords and most importantly, strumming with his half right arm.

"I don’t know, maybe I just like playing music siguro (I guess). At saka I think I’m enjoying it naman at saka masaya dahil nakakapagpasaya (I think I'm enjoying it because it's fun and it provides fun)," Gurang said.

The vibrant Pinoy scholar had always strived hard to become a role model for all with physical disabilities.

"Maybe I just got motivated with my environment dahil (because) I felt that I have lots of energy. Pero alam ko ang limitation ko (I know my limitations). Para bang gustong-gusto kong gumalaw, pero limited nga dahil sa aking sitwasyon but maybe the energy just got me into it and inisip kong gumawa ng mga bagay-bagay beyond my physical abilities (It's as if I want to move but my movements are limited...I thought about doing things...)," Gurang told ABS-CBN's Balitang Europe.

He made it a guiding principle in life to attain what is beyond his means and has only that sad incident in his youth to thank for because it made him what he is now.

When Gurang plays the guitar, he uses his right arm to strum the chords and does this with a breeze.

In fact, he has invented a device which allows him to play the guitar as if he has a right hand.

"Meron akong nilalagay na gadget which I invented actually. It’s a simple machine na nanggaling sa isang container ng alcohol. Nilagyan ko para makakapag-strum ako and siguro mukha namang wala ring pinag-iba dun sa tunog kapag dalawang kamay na ang tumutugtog. So I think it’s a matter of knowing your limitations and doing something that you would like to do," Gurang said.

(I attached the gadget that I invented...It's a simple machine that came from an alcohol container. I attached it so that I can strum and well, it's not different from strumming when you have both hands.)

Gurang said he cut the top and bottom of a green alcohol plastic bottle, the good size of two lady’s bangle bracelets and attaches it to the amputated arm, which he then uses for strumming.

The music generated is heavenly.

The representative of a Manila-based commercial bank watched Gurang perform in veneration. He even took video clips of Gurang’s performance via his mobile phone.

"I’m trying to learn how to play the guitar but it’s been very difficult for me. But with what I saw, I think I will have a stronger faith in myself that I would be able to do it," Tito Rabago said.

"I thought he started early but when I found out that he started at the age of 15, it must have been difficult for him and yet he was able to come with such a skill today and he amazes me," Rabago added.

Gurang is truly amazing because even if he has already worked for non-government organizations and the Department of Social Welfare, his quest to help and to inspire continues.

"I think na-prove ko na lahat. I’m just here because nakikita ko na may kulang or gusto ko pang makapag-serve ng mas quality sa atin sa Pilipinas and at the same time, gusto ko pang makapag-reach out sa mas marami dun sa trabaho ko kasi I am a development worker," Gurang said.

(I think I've proven everything already. I'm just here because I see that there's something missing or I want to serve more in the Philippines and at the same time, to reach out to more Filipinos through my work because I'm a development worker.)

"Mahirap magkipagtrabaho na nagbibigay ng serbisyo sa tao na mali ang approach mo dahil buhay ng tao ang naapektuhan (It's hard to work in public service if you're approach is wrong because people's lives are affected)," Gurang added.

As a development worker, Gurang works with poor communities in the Philippines in order to help them realize their potentials and also identify the really needy or the poor communities.

"Dun kami nakikipag-work para makabangon sila sa kahirapan and we formulate with them various programs and projects. Nung nasa DSW ako, yung anti-poverty program. Nung nasa isang NGO ako dati, isang child-focus program."

(We work with them to help them recover from poverty. When I was in the Department of Social Work, there's the anti-poverty program. When I was in an NGO, it was the child-focus program.)

Gurang hopes to be a symbol of strength and determination in order to inspire a lot of those with physical disabilities who had given up on hope.

"Ang makapag-inspire din ng mga katulad ko [na] dati na sa tingin nila eh medyo malayo ang bukas, na sana ma-inspire sila para mag-strive further (I hope to inspire others like me who think that's dawn's so far away, I hope to inspire them to make them strive further)."

After succeeding in his battle for the betterment of knowledge in The Netherlands, Gurang plans to go back to the Philippines to share his blessings as well as to impart his wealth of mind.

"I think babalik din ako sa Pilipinas doing the same thing but this time with more quality and mas makaka-serve ng mas maraming tao and also mas focused din sa talagang nangangailangan din at saka makatulong and share knowledge sa mga kasama ko na development practitioners."

(I'll return to the Philippines doing the same thing but this time with more quality and I hope to serve more people and have a more focused approach to those who are really in need and to help and share my knowledge to my colleagues.)

Gurang also hopes to strum a new chord in stopping "brain drain" in the country and sustain the flow of "brain gain."

When your star's on the rise, you know you've got it made when someone tries to sell a sex video about you in an attempt to cash in on your fame.

Journey frontman Arnel Pineda is all smiles when he talks about the alleged sex scandal involving him.  "It really does look like me!" he says outside an ABS-CBN studio.

His manager, Bert de Leon, also laughs off the news. "It couldn't be you because you aren't singing 'Open Arms' while doing it."

"And it doesn't end with me singing the Hallelujah Chorus," adds Pineda.

It's refreshing to see this future rock star in high spirits, which he says only masks the jitters he's been having since he got back from the US after recording Journey's latest album.

"Everything hasn't sunk in yet. It's like a dream," he says.

The 40-year-old vocalist freely admits that he is psyching himself for the long journey ahead. Pineda's baptism of fire as official Journey frontman starts at the Festival de Viña del Mar at Quinta Vergara Arena in Chile on Feb. 21, 2008. He will also perform at Estadio San Carlos de Apoquindo in Santiago on February 23 and at Grand Hotel and Casino of Viña del Mar on February 24, both in Chile.

The band is also set to perform for a private Remax Convention event at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on March 6 before taking a brief respite ahead of a US and Europe tour. Before the end of the year, Journey is slated to do concerts in Japan, Australia and finally, the Philippines.

"Well, it would be a breathtaking experience for me. I hope I do very, very good. I also get to fulfill my dream of traveling," Pineda says.

Pineda's story is now official YouTube legend: Journey axeman Neal Schon discovered the Pinoy vocalist after a fan, Noel Gomez, posted videos of Pineda and his band Zoo singing covers of Journey, Foreigner and Air Supply hits on the popular video-sharing site.

Pineda says he initially dismissed as a hoax Schon's e-mailed invitation to audition for Journey. "I told Noel, this must be the work of a prankster. A guitar god like him would not do something like this - contact a Filipino singer like this. But [Noel] was persistent. He said it might be a chance of a lifetime, and it was."

He says Schon called him up 10 minutes after he replied to the guitarist's e-mail. "He really did have to spend time convincing me that he really was Neal Schon. But what nailed it was when he asked me to audition in San Francisco for the band," he recalls.

Pineda credits his mom for his early training on music by getting him hooked on Karen Carpenter and Barbra Streisand songs. He also credits his past experience in different bands for giving him valuable vocal training.

What keeps his feet on the ground, however, is his family.

Pineda downplays criticism from avid Journey fans that he would never fill the place of the band's most famous vocalist, Steve Perry.

"When I heard the criticisms, it just made me even more proud to be from the Philippines. It's amazing how this band has come to embrace so many cultures, including our own," he says.

To prepare for the tour, Pineda has been hitting the gym and vocalizing regularly. "I know it's a job but I want to do it well and I want to do it right," he says.

He also reveals his secret to staying away from groupies and possible sex scandals. "I'll just pass it on to the road manager and let him handle it. I'll just stay in my room and live like a monk," he laughs

The remains of a Filipina spa supervisor who was killed in a suicide attack at a luxury hotel in Afghanistan arrived in Manila Saturday evening.

The body of Zennia Aguilan arrived 10:35 p.m. via Emirates flight EK 334.

Her remains were met by her two siblings. They however declined to give any statement.

At least eight people, including Aguilan who was working as a spa supervisor at Serena Hotel, were killed when armed men stormed the building in Kabul the capital of Afghanistan.

Aguilan reportedly died from injuries she sustained from the suicide bombing and armed attack on the hotel.

The attack killed at least seven others including a US citizen and a Norwegian newspaper reporter, Carsten Thomassen, 38.

A Reuters report said up to four attackers threw hand grenades at the gates, shot their way into the high-walled compound and at some point set off a suicide bomb near the hotel, which was housing Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere. Stoere was unhurt in the attack.

Robert Stewart, an American who witnessed the attack, said a Filipino woman was shot. The Filipino woman had been shot "critically through the lung," he told CNN.

Meanwhile, Aguilan's relatives are mourning the unexpected loss of their family member.

Veronica Dumawa, the victim's aunt said they saw Aguilan, the youngest of five children, in July 2007 when she went home to Baguio City for a vacation. The victim planned to return for another vacation

Mike you're right Fisher did lived in Baguio between 2000 & 2002, see story below:

Fischer has a Pinoy heir born in Baguio -- friends

BAGUIO CITY -- A generation still remembers American chess genius Bobby Fischer as a recluse. It is hard to picture this bearded legend playing tennis matches at a country club or walking hand in hand with a Filipina.

But this generation will have to embrace this new image of the 64-year-old Fischer shaped before his death on Thursday in Reykjavik, Iceland.

Fischer played tennis at the Baguio Country Club and had romanced a 30-year-old woman from Davao in Baguio City before he went on exile to Iceland.

The man became an American icon for defeating Soviet grandmaster Boris Spassky at the height of the Cold War and again in a highly publicized match in Yugoslavia in 1992 that later led him to renounce his American citizenship.

The American government sanctioned Fischer for playing in Yugoslavia. It said he violated the United Nations embargo imposed on Serb leader Slobodan Milosevic who fomented war in the Balkans.

Fischer became more notorious when he gave brazen speeches and interviews over various radio stations around the world that depicted the United States as an evil nation run by Jewish conspirators.

But the man who styled himself as a modern American outlaw made the American-built Baguio his home between 2000 and 2002 after he renounced his American citizenship, his Filipino friends here said on Saturday.

Fischer's certified Filipino heir was born in 2002 at the Saint Louis University Sacred Heart Hospital here. Her birth certificate bore her father’s name.

The 6-foot-tall Fischer used to consume large servings of Filipino cuisine and adored sinigang (a popular soup dish) while he stayed here for almost two years, said Marilin Torre, wife of Filipino grandmaster Eugene Torre.

Marilin said Fischer used to consume five balut (boiled duck eggs in embryonic stage) in one sitting every day, years before he decided to stay in Baguio.

Fischer asked Marilin to bring him 50 balut eggs when she went to Yugoslavia with her husband for Fischer's match with Spassky. Eugene served as Fischer's second in the match.

Eugene, Asia's first grandmaster, became Fischer's bosom friend and one of the few people he trusted until his death.

Fischer had lived a nomadic life, pursued by what he described as a cabal of Jews that controlled the world, so he entertained only a small circle of friends like Torre when he decided to stay in the Philippines, said Leonides "Des" Bautista, a close friend of another chess icon, Florencio Campomanes.

Despite his reputation, Fischer kept a normal home with his sweetheart in the city, according to Marilin.

A top executive of the Government Service Insurance System briefly hosted Fischer at the country club for three months in 2000.

Jimmy Tangalin, 49, a professional tennis coach of the club, supervised Fischer for a while, and found the man "kind and entertaining."

"It was Eugene who introduced me to Fischer. I knew about [Fischer's] celebrity status. But it was still a pleasant surprise. We just met, but he immediately opened up a conversation about Jews and the US. These conversations were awkward for me," Tangalin said.

Fischer leased a home inside the compound owned by former Baguio Councilor Elmo Nevada where the Torre family used to stay.

Elements of Fischer's bizarre reputation cropped up from time to time, Marilin said. "When he showered, he didn't use any shampoo. He preferred to wash with just water and soap. He brushed his teeth without toothpaste."

Why he decided to make "a former American colony and city" his home for a while still confounds his friends.

Bautista said Campomanes had a hand in bringing Fischer to the country back in the 1970s at the height of martial law.

Since then, Fischer occasionally visited the Philippines.

He had been a close friend of New York-based Filipino artist Isabel Diaz whom he sometimes accompanied to the country whenever she returned for a visit, Marilin related.

But he began to frequent Baguio when he became close to Torre, Bautista said.

Bautista said his first meeting with Fischer gave him some insight as to why Baguio was the American’s sanctuary.

"You don't recognize him. He wears a hat. For the older generation, we remember him as clean-shaven so we would not recognize him if he approached you. He had a beard and was balding. But when Eugene introduced us, he was so comfortable."

"Fischer lived in his own world," he added, and being incognito fitted well with a community where people minded their own business.

Bautista said the old Baguio culture developed this habit because residents were used to Caucasians who lived in the city.

"That's what Bobby loved about Baguio," he said.

Fischer never lost this connection to the city. When he was arrested by the Japanese authorities in July 2004 for holding an expired US passport, he telephoned friends in Baguio.

Marilin Torre said Fischer’s sweetheart, then already based in Davao, kept in close touch with Fischer even after another friend, Miyoko Watari, publicly declared that she would marry the controversial celebrity to keep him out of Japanese prison.

SINULOG organizers have at least P18 million in financial aid and sponsorships to fund the grand parade and other activities, which are estimated to cost P17.5 million.

But it’s the non-monetary assistance from the Cebu City Government and the Basilica del Santo Niño officials that makes the event successful every year, said Ricky Ballesteros, executive director of the Sinulog Foundation Inc. (SFI).

SFI, a private entity, is relying on the City’s financial aid of P8 million and sponsorships from private companies and organizations.

Ballesteros said the sponsorships are still coming in but they expect to get P8 million from their sponsors, excluding the ex-deals they will get, which would include beverages, food and souvenir items.

Another P2 million will be raised from ticket sales, and proceeds from the registration of floats and photographers who will join the photography contest.

A bulk of the Sinulog funds will be spent on cash prizes for the winning contingents and entries, which will amount to P7.3 million.

Other expenses include subsidies for out-of-town contingents (P600,000), the labor and décor for the stage (P800,000), trophies (P350,000) and food for the crowd control team and other volunteers (P450,000).

Support

“We are a private organization but we still rely heavily on the City Government, not only for funding. It’s the non-monetary support the City gives that ensures the success of the event, from the manpower to vehicles and equipment,” Ballesteros told Sun.Star Cebu.

In any religious festival as big as the Sinulog, good relations with the local government and church officials is important, he said.

“In the many festival organization and management seminars I attended, that is always emphasized. No matter how good the people are in putting together the Sinulog, if you don’t have vehicles to transport the people, if you don’t have policemen looking after security or street sweepers cleaning the city after the parade, your event will not be a success,” Ballesteros continued.

Each of the 63 committees working for the staging of the Sinulog grand parade has a liaison officer who deals with the Basilica priests to ensure that the religious aspect of the celebration is preserved and there is no conflict in the schedule of activities.

Civic groups, the academe and volunteers like the firefighters, paramedics, reservists, and utility companies have also contributed to make sure this Sunday’s parade will be successful.

Last year, the Sinulog 2007 grand parade, nightly activities at the city’s parks, the Festival Queen awarding, advertisements, souvenir programs and other expenses cost the SFI P18.36 million.

The foundation got a total of P21.1 million from donations and financial assistance, sponsorships, ticket sales, registration fees and booth rentals.

“At the end of each year’s Sinulog, we earn a little amount, which we use for the administrative and operating expenses. But I think we have to work harder because the foundation also has to earn so we don’t scamper for sponsorships every year. We need to have seed money so the event can improve,” Ballesteros said. REYKJAVIK, Iceland - Bobby Fischer, the reclusive chess genius who became a Cold War icon by dethroning the Soviet world champion in 1972 and later renounced his American citizenship, has died. He was 64.

Fisher died in a Reykjavik hospital on Thursday, his spokesman, Gardar Sverrisson, said Friday. There was no immediate word on cause of death.

Born in Chicago and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., Fischer was wanted in the United States for playing a 1992 rematch against Boris Spassky in Yugoslavia in defiance of international sanctions. In 2005, he moved to Iceland, a chess-mad nation and site of his greatest triumph.

Garry Kasparov, the former Russian chess champion, said Fischer's ascent in the chess world in the 1960s and his promotion of chess worldwide was "a revolutionary breakthrough" for the game. But Fischer's reputation as a genius of chess was eclipsed, in the eyes of many, by his idiosyncrasies.

"The tragedy is that he left this world too early, and his extravagant life and scandalous statements did not contribute to the popularity of chess," Kasparov told The Associated Press.

He lost his world title in 1975 after refusing to defend it against Anatoly Karpov. He dropped out of competitive chess and largely out of view, emerging occasionally to make erratic and often anti-Semitic comments, although his mother was Jewish.

Spassky said in a brief phone call from his home in France that he was "very sorry" to hear of the death of his friend and rival.

An American chess champion at 14 and a grand master at 15, Fischer dethroned the Spassky in 1972 in a series of games in Iceland's capital, Reykjavik, to claim America's first world chess championship in more than a century.

The match, at the height of the Cold War, took on mythic dimensions as a clash between the world's two superpowers.

Fischer played â€" and won â€" an exhibition rematch against Spassky on the resort island of Sveti Stefan, but the game was in violation of U.S. sanctions imposed to punish then-President Slobodan Milosevic.

In July 2004, Fischer was arrested at Japan's Narita airport for traveling on a revoked U.S. passport and threatened with extradition to the United States. He spent nine months in custody before the dispute was resolved when Iceland granted him citizenship.

In his final years, Fischer railed against the chess establishment, alleging that the outcomes of many top-level chess matches were decided in advance.

Instead, he championed his concept of random chess, in which pieces are shuffled at the beginning of each match in a bid to reinvigorate the game.

"I don't play the old chess," he told reporters when he arrived in Iceland in 2005. "But obviously if I did, I would be the best."

Born in Chicago in March 9, 1943, Robert James Fischer was a child prodigy, playing competitively from the age of 8.

At 13, he became the youngest player to win the United States Junior Championship. At 14, he won the United States Open Championship for the first of eight times.

At 15, he gained the title of international grand master, the youngest person to hold the title.

Tall, charismatic and with striking looks, he was a chess star â€" but already gaining a reputation for volatile behavior.

He turned up late for tournaments, walked out of matches, refused to play unless the lighting suited him and was intolerant of photographers and cartoonists. He was convinced of his own superiority and called the Soviets "Commie cheats."

His behavior often unsettled opponents â€" to Fischer's advantage.

This was seen most famously in the showdown with Spassky in Reykjavik between July and September 1972. Having agreed to play Spassky in Yugoslavia, Fischer raised one objection after another to the arrangements and they wound up playing in Iceland.

When play got under way, days late, Fischer lost the first game with an elementary blunder after discovering that television cameras he had reluctantly accepted were not unseen and unheard, but right behind the players' chairs.

He boycotted the second game and the referee awarded the point to Spassky, putting the Russian ahead 2-0.

But then Spassky agreed to Fischer's demand that the games be played in a back room away from cameras. Fischer went on to beat Spassky, 12.5 points to 8.5 points in 21 games.

Americans, gripped in their millions by the contest, rejoiced in the victory over their Cold War adversary.

In the recent book "White King and Red Queen," the British author Daniel Johnson said the match was "an abstract antagonism on an abstract battleground using abstract weapons ... yet their struggle embraced all human life."

"In Spassky's submission to his fate and Fischer's fierce exultant triumph, the Cold War's denouement was already foreshadowed."
