Foundation has P18M for Sinulog 2008 activities
« on: January 18, 2008, 10:41:08 PM »
SINULOG organizers have at least P18 million in financial aid and sponsorships to fund the grand parade and other activities, which are estimated to cost P17.5 million.

But it’s the non-monetary assistance from the Cebu City Government and the Basilica del Santo Niño officials that makes the event successful every year, said Ricky Ballesteros, executive director of the Sinulog Foundation Inc. (SFI).

SFI, a private entity, is relying on the City’s financial aid of P8 million and sponsorships from private companies and organizations.

Ballesteros said the sponsorships are still coming in but they expect to get P8 million from their sponsors, excluding the ex-deals they will get, which would include beverages, food and souvenir items.

Another P2 million will be raised from ticket sales, and proceeds from the registration of floats and photographers who will join the photography contest.

A bulk of the Sinulog funds will be spent on cash prizes for the winning contingents and entries, which will amount to P7.3 million.

Other expenses include subsidies for out-of-town contingents (P600,000), the labor and décor for the stage (P800,000), trophies (P350,000) and food for the crowd control team and other volunteers (P450,000).

Support

“We are a private organization but we still rely heavily on the City Government, not only for funding. It’s the non-monetary support the City gives that ensures the success of the event, from the manpower to vehicles and equipment,” Ballesteros told Sun.Star Cebu.

In any religious festival as big as the Sinulog, good relations with the local government and church officials is important, he said.

“In the many festival organization and management seminars I attended, that is always emphasized. No matter how good the people are in putting together the Sinulog, if you don’t have vehicles to transport the people, if you don’t have policemen looking after security or street sweepers cleaning the city after the parade, your event will not be a success,” Ballesteros continued.

Each of the 63 committees working for the staging of the Sinulog grand parade has a liaison officer who deals with the Basilica priests to ensure that the religious aspect of the celebration is preserved and there is no conflict in the schedule of activities.

Civic groups, the academe and volunteers like the firefighters, paramedics, reservists, and utility companies have also contributed to make sure this Sunday’s parade will be successful.

Last year, the Sinulog 2007 grand parade, nightly activities at the city’s parks, the Festival Queen awarding, advertisements, souvenir programs and other expenses cost the SFI P18.36 million.

The foundation got a total of P21.1 million from donations and financial assistance, sponsorships, ticket sales, registration fees and booth rentals.

“At the end of each year’s Sinulog, we earn a little amount, which we use for the administrative and operating expenses. But I think we have to work harder because the foundation also has to earn so we don’t scamper for sponsorships every year. We need to have seed money so the event can improve,” Ballesteros said.
