Hello,
My group and I will be in Bohol from Nov 11-14. How do we get to Tubag? Is that the beach in the homepage? We would love to visit that beach!
Anybody who can help? Pls email me at bong.azana@yahoo.com. How to get there from the airport or Tagbilaran City mismo. Would appreciate if you could include inns or transient houses near that beach where we could stay (we're cost-cutting that's why as much as possible we avoid hotels! hehe...).
Much appreciation if anybody could list down all the scenic and tourist spots we can visit while in Bohol - plus of course how to get to those spots.
Hope anybody could email me back before we leave on the 11th.
Daghan salamat Boholanos!
Bong

Forgive the article, pecious, because it just relies mostly on general stereotypes. Given, after reading the article, I noticed that there tends to be some truths and some false statements on part of the Filipino and the American. It really is due to the fact that both peoples are in different societies whose cultures are foreign from one another. In one side, you have the Filipinos who practice a form of filial piety--a general obeisance and respect for the elder--such is observed in Filipino social etiquette of the 'Mano Po'--which is when the Filipino child or younger person takes the hand of the elder and touches it to his/her forehead--thereby showing filial piety and respect. This is rather universal in most parts of East and South East Asia--you observe this in Japan and South Korea where the younger generation bow before the elder in showing respect. The same is seen in Laos, Cambodia and Thailand--where the younger generation will give a 'wai' when they clasp their hands together and bow before the elder--either a relative etc. For Indians, I've noticed my friends who touch their foreheands on the foot of their grandparents, uncles, aunts etc to show filial piety.
However, for western societies such as the United States, Canada, UK etc---there seems to be a prevalent discourse in the form of 'indivualism' and the concept of 'imuha imuha--akoha-ako'. The United States is a progressive country with multi ethnic customs--and tends to have more of a general acceptance of different cultures--considering the demographics of the country: 65% of Americans are European-Americans, 16% are Latin-Americans, 15% are African Americans and 5% being Asian-Americans and the rest being mixed races. It is without doubt that the United States tends to be rather heterogenous, whereas the Philippines is almost completely homgenous--most of the population are part of the Malay Race (the same with Malaysians, Indonesians, Bruneians, and Southern Thais) with over 95% Filipinos being Malay and a minor 3% having some kind of Spanish or European blood and another 2% having some kind of foreign Asian blood (Chinese, Japanese, etc). So of course one will observe a stronger unified Filipino culture compared to the United States--which really has a mixed culture due the 'salad bowl/ melting pot' phenomenon of the nation state.
I would like to say that not all Filipinos behave accordingly to the said article, as is the same for not all Americans behave accordingly to the said stereotype. Though such stereotypes are flawed because as Filipinos assimilate to American society--they too pick up and adopt 'American' traits--the same can be said for Americans who live and assimilate within the Philippines. The point is made.
Just dont take it too personally, guys. Take it lightly and laugh..
God Bless all of you!!

Personally, I like beauty that continues to shine, not beauty that comes with a flash but fades in time.
I think it's only inner beauty that has this quality. Unlike physical beauty, which comes as a full-course meal in one serving, inner beauty reveals itself in small servings but with ever increasing radiance.
We see this beauty in a person's attitude, in the thoughts we share, even in our unguarded moments of joy, sadness, surprise...
That's why in this vast coffeeshop of the cyberworld, I chose the seat closest to you here at TB. You are the most beautiful people on earth.

to answer the question, no serious issues have to be adjusted that much. like ms da bins, i used to work, but when i got married, home becomes my place the whole day. when i was still in the phils, we already agreed that i wouldn't work. he got his early pension at age 49, and from that he said it would just be enough for us to live simply. part of our agreement was that, he would be the cook and i would be his assistant(tigtilaw, hehe). but even then, i tried my very best to learn how to cook the belgian way. here, you will only prepare one major meal, and they call it a dinner even if you prepare it during noon. they don't normally eat during breakfast and lunch. but of course, if i'm hungry, maningkamot lang sad ko,hehe!
my husband may not be rich financially but his love is more than the diamonds in antwerp, belgium.hehehe!

Basta I am glad I have another set of family here. Ginger and Mr. Jun, "decimal point" lang inyong kadaghanon sa amo coz we were 13 (1 died of a vehicular accident) but still gapang accept pa among family ug "honorary" brothers and sisters. All our friends who visit our humble and happy home, you are so welcome to call our parents Mom and Dad too. Speaking of which, a TB brother is visiting our family later today - hopefully. When I told Mom about it, first thing she asked was: "Ging, mag ininglis na sija?" Intawon sa akong inahan. Told her, kon ininglisan ka Mi, ingna lang ajaw ko ininglisi Doy! Heheheh

Hello Mr. Bene,
Thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts to us. I could say, and I am almost certain I share my views to most that you are one of the icons of knowledge of TB. I read your posts as I read my favorite authors' books.
Lumine and I are sisters. Cagayan de Oro has a special place to us, our second home as we spent some good years there - Lumine as a student and I as an employee in one local-based corporation. Needless to say, Bohol is our first home. We grew up there and we will always be a true and proud Boholanos. Someday I will be able to go back in Bohol and retrace memories.
By the way, Lumine's husband Herman is not an American. He is a Belgian who fell in love with the Philippines the first time he got there. Of course, it must have something to do with his profound love to my dear sister, Lumine.Herman is a very wonderful man! He may not be so fluent in conversational English but he well managed to communicate is kind heartedness and his generosity and his love to us.
Quote from: benelynne on November 04, 2007, 08:35:26 AM
Hi Lumine,
I have always been mistaken for a Japanese. When I went to Bohol with my tan-skinned wife, two equally sun-browned kids in tow, a few years ago, the Cebuana ladies beside her whispered "Your Japanese husband speaks Tagalog perfectly."
You can just imagine how astonished they were when I responded in Binisaya, "Mura diay kog Hapon ug nawong? Bol-anon intawon ko."
Honestly, I consider it a more heart-warming compliment to elicit the first impression of that of a Filipino who speaks Japanese well than a Japanese who speaks English or Tagalog perfectly.
By the way, CDO is my second home after Bohol. I actually spent more years there than in Bohol. I hope to see you there one of these days.
Quote from: benelynne on November 04, 2007, 08:53:33 AM
Lumine,
No offense meant to your American hubby. I am sure your choice of partner is as impeccable as your English... although we all have human lapses despite our best intentions...
Quote from: benelynne on November 04, 2007, 08:46:35 AM
By the way, na OT naman diay ko.
Anyway, going back to the thought of this thread, I would just like to say that Filipinos are born with a talent for languages.
Kani ganing mga so-called "native English speakers", usahay dili magkasinabot. When I was studying Japanese at the Tokyo University School of Foreign Languages for one year, I was the interpreter between a British and an American classmate. Unya naa pay niabot nga Australian student nga nakurat mi kay nisulti, "I am going to the hospital to die" (and pasabot man diay "I am going to the hospital today").
Ato-ato ra, pero confident ko nga at any time of the day, I can beat Americans in a grammar and spelling test. I am sure most of us at TB can!
. if taas tulog baby matt, i will post my poem when i was still in college.

You've illuminated the point, Lumine. A word lost in translation or in transmission can make a whole world of difference.
If less than 50% of American high school students can tell where Canada, Russia or the Philippines is, how can you expect them to know what languages are spoken in these places?
Check out these interesting statistics at http://www.nationmaster.com/red/graph/edu_geo_apt_res-education-geographical-aptitude-results. The Philippines is actually #1 in an on-line geographical aptitude test while the US is only #96.
Besides, I've always found it easy to deal with someone who badmouths my English ability. Like Grazie, just speak to them in your best English. In Japan, when know you are a foreigner, they immediately presume you don't know the language. Following the Japanese culture of fake humility, I apologize for my limited Japanese ability in the finest, politest Japanese I can muster. Then they're speechless.
