In this astronomical event, most of the sun will be blocked out by the moon; but the moon's apparent diameter, as seen from earth, will appear 4.5% smaller, thus a thin sliver of the sun's light will appear around the moon - what astronomers call a "ring of fire," or an annulus.

The Visayas, Mindanao, Palawan, and some parts of south Luzon will see a partial eclipse between 5:20 and 7:33 am. General Santos City will have one of the best views in the country, where people will be able to see 19.2% of the sun's surface area obscured.

The total eclipse will be seen across northwest and northern Australia, parts of Papua New Guinea, and across several Pacific islands, taking a curved path more than 13,000 kilometers long, and between 171 to 225 km in width.

Queensland, Australia, will be one of the best places to view the eclipse - and it will be the state's second solar eclipse in the past 6 months, reports Space.com.

However, the best place to view the eclipse won't be on land - it will be somewhere in the middle of the Pacific, just a bit east of the Marshall Islands and Nauru.

In this spot - called the instant of greatest eclipse - the duration of the eclipse will be 6 minutes 3 seconds long.

Annularity (the ring of fire) will be visible throughout much of Papua New Guinea, parts of Western Australia and the Northern Territory and Queensland. And a partial eclipse will be visible to those in Hawaii, parts of Indonesia, and most Pacific Islands. The eclipse will have a magnitude of 0.9544. For further specifics, the image below should help to clarify.

For those in other regions, you can still watch the eclipse via the Slooh Space Camera, which will be covering it.

my general is not way past that. let us just say nga kong bright ka, PMA graduate and a few connections, you can become a general at a very young age.

your general, magkabata-bata, magka-pull-pull, magka-bright-bright nga pma-yer... becoming a general at a young age would at the very least make him 40 years old or thereabouts, when he became general.  granting, and in relation to you kay 1st lieutenant man kaha ni siya sa sundalo ka pa, mga 8 to 10 years old pa diay siya nga na-1st lieutenant?  aruy, ang mga kulto ra man sa ato ang naay ingon ana. ;D

“I saw the green eyes and I said, ‘My God in heaven, it’s Porsche!’” said Baumann.

Somehow the cat managed to travel eight miles through storm destruction, traffic and even over a bridge to get back to his original home.

“It’s just amazing how he found his way home,” said Baumann. “I wish he could talk.”

Baumann and Roberts plan to have Porsche checked out by a vet next week. They say however that it doesn’t look like he missed many meals in the past six months.

“You could see he was eating,” said Uranie. “His fur is sleek and soft.”

Whether he’s just extremely resourceful or truly does have nine lives, Baumann and Roberts are just glad to have him back.

“It’s wonderful,” said Baumann. “I missed him so bad.”

Cat that went missing after Sandy turns up at home six months later

By David Chang, NBCPhiladelphia.com

Uranie Roberts only has one way to describe it.

"It's a miracle," she said.

Lost for half a year, her beloved pet cat “Porsche” somehow found his way home.

Last November, Roberts and her family, including Porsche, had to be evacuated by boat from their home in the Chadwick Beach Island section of Toms River, N.J., after Superstorm Sandy hit the area. The family temporarily relocated to a relative’s home in Point Pleasant Borough before returning to Toms River. While the family was in Point Pleasant however, Porsche went missing.

“He got out of the house and that was the last we saw of him,” said Carol Baumann, Uranie’s daughter.

Baumann believed Porsche was gone for good. That was until Wednesday when she heard the familiar sound of meowing coming from the back deck of their Toms River home. When she walked toward it, she saw something she never thought she would see again.

because type nako ang trivia ug logic (of which i have a meager but useful supply, with apologies) let me do the math here...

college level ka adtong panahona.  ingnon na lang nato nga mga 18-20 years old ka.  it won't happen nga less than 18 ka kay di man tingali dawaton as volunteer kun menor de edad.  wa man tingali mauso sa ato ang child soldiers pareha sa somalia.

si kanhing 1st lieutenant sa una nga general na karon nga imong boss sa panahon sa imong soldierly adventure must have been in his mid-twenties; magkabata-bata, 21 tingali.  with enough backbending in my "analysis", ingnon na lang nato nga kaedad mo.

you've mentioned more than once here at tb that you're already 62.  your photos show as much, though compared with other men your age you have less wrinkles.  (congrats.  i know you're botox-free.)

so, that 1st lieutenant who's now a general must now be in his mid-60s or, at the very least, 62 like you, give or take a few years.

our soldiers, commissioned and non-commissioned officers included, retire at age 56 or after 30 years of service, whichever comes first.  your general is way past that.  i fear you might call a zombie at camp lapulapu.

this is to point out that this has nothing to do with IQs.  this is more about time travel... :-\

And comedian and actor Patton Oswalt Tweeted: "Dear Charles Ramsey: I am not a little pretty white girl, but I totally want to run into your black arms. #hero."

And the McDonald's Corp. couldn't resist reaching out on Twitter: "Way to go Charles Ramsey â€" we'll be in touch."

Charles Ramsey: Women's Rescuer Becomes Unlikely Hero, Online Sensation

By Elaine Aradillas
05/07/2013

Meet Charles Ramsey: Cleveland dishwasher, unlikely hero, sudden Internet sensation.

Ramsey is the man seen in the WEWS-TV video colorfully recounting how he helped save the three Ohio women from captivity after they'd been missing for more than a decade.

The video has gone viral, his sound bites lauded online as classics:

• "Bro, I knew something was wrong when a pretty little white girl ran into a black man’s arms. Something is wrong here."
#21932
COOPER:  She said that.

RAMSEY:  Yes.  I said well, how's that possible?  Because you wouldn't - if you got kidnapped, he was having sex with you?  Oh, Jesus.  That little girl is his?  Now we want to hurt you.

COOPER:  You felt that?

RAMSEY:  Bro, this will be a different interview, I told you that, if we had known that.  Man, I would be facing triple life.

COOPER:  Wow.  I'm glad it turned out this way.

http://cnnpressroom.blogs.cnn.com/

#21933

COOPER:  Has the FBI said anything about a reward or anything?  Because there was that - there was a reward for finding her.

RAMSEY:  I tell you what you do, give it to them.  Because if folks been following this case since last night, you been following me since last night, you know I got a job anyway.  Just went picked it up, paycheck.  What that address say?  That say?

COOPER:  I don't have my glasses.  I'm blind as a bat.

RAMSEY:  2203 Seymour.  Where are them girls living?  Right next door to this paycheck.  So yes, take that reward and give it to - that little girl came out the house and she was crying.  And I'm looking at her, right, I'm like your mama trying to help you, girl, shut up.  I don't know, right.  And she's like I want my daddy.  And I said, who's her daddy?  She said Ariel.
#21934

COOPER:  Because you know how it is.  There's a lot of people who turn away.

RAMSEY:  You have to have cajones, bro.

COOPER:  Keep walking down on the street.

RAMSEY:  That's all what it's about.  It's about cajones on this planet.
#21935

COOPER:  What does it - what does it feel like to have been living next to this for a year?

RAMSEY:  See, that's why now I'm having trouble sleeping.  See, up until yesterday, the only thing that kept me from losing sleep was the lack of money.  See what I'm saying?  So now that that's going on, and I could have done this last year, not this hero stuff, just do the right thing â€"

COOPER:  Do you feel like a hero?

RAMSEY:  No.

COOPER:  Because there's a lot of people, they're saying you're a hero.

RAMSEY:  No, no, no.  Bro, I'm a Christian, an American, and just like you.  We bleed same blood, put our pants on the same way.  It's just that you got to put that - being a coward, and I don't want to get in nobody's business.  You got to put that away for a minute.
#21936

Charles Ramsey -- the Cleveland man who helped free 3 missing women -- is the best kind of hero ... the kind that saves lives, and makes you laugh your ass off.(http://www.tmz.com/)

COOPER:  So you call 911.

RAMSEY:  Sure did.

COOPER:  How quickly did the police get there?

RAMSEY:  You know what, they got there so fast because I said moron.  Because I said hey, Amanda Berry is right in front of me right now.  Here's what she got on and I told him white tank top, blue sweatpants, nice tennis shoes, nice ponytail.  What else?  Oh, right.  She's panicking, idiot.  Put yourself in her shoes.  Like I said, Amanda Berry, that don't ring no damn bells, you being a cop and all?

COOPER:  But you - when you first saw her and she said the name Amanda Berry, did it â€"

RAMSEY:  It didn't - I didn't know.  Because I forgot.  Bro, this is Cleveland.  Since they haven't found that girl.

COOPER:  Right.

RAMSEY:  And I guess stopped looking for that girl, we figured that girl was - met her demise.

COOPER:  Right.

RAMSEY:  So Berry didn't register with me until I was on the phone like, wait a minute, I thought this girl was dead.
#21937
RAMSEY:  Heard her screaming, I'm eating my McDonald's, I come outside, and I see this girl going nuts trying to get out of a house.  So I go on the porch.  I go on the porch and she says, help me get out, I've been here a long time.  So you know, I figured it's a domestic violence dispute.  So I opened the door and we can't get in that way because how the door is, it's so much that a body can't fit through, only your hand.  So we kicked the bottom and she comes out with a little girl, and she says call 911, my name is Amanda Berry.

COOPER:  If not for the actions of Charles Ramsey and another neighbor who helped him, the three women may still be in that house here in Cleveland.
#21938

COOPER:  Amanda Berry then, what, asked to call 911?

RAMSEY:  Mm-hmm.  And I took her to my house.  Now I'm nervous as hell so I'm fumbling with my phone, so I finally get it right.  She can't wait and I don't blame her.  So what I do was tell her go across the street and use their phone.  Now we're both calling 911.  Now she gets through and I get through.  She deal with a moron, me, too.

COOPER:  You said there - what do you mean, a moron?

RAMSEY:  Idiot.

COOPER:  I heard the 911 call for her â€"

RAMSEY:  Imbecile.

COOPER:  And the woman kept â€"

RAMSEY:  Shouldn't have a damn job.

COOPER:  The woman was like hang up and wait for the police.

RAMSEY:  Really.  How about stay on and I will talk to you until they get there?

COOPER:  Right.
#21939

COOPER:  What did she look like?  I mean, what was she wearing?

RAMSEY:  Jumpsuit.  She had a white tank top on, rings on, mascara.  You know, she was well groomed.  She didn't look like she was kidnapped.  That's what I'm saying.  That's what threw me off.  She was like I'm in here trapped.  I'm like, well, you don't look kidnapped so maybe you got a boyfriend problem.  But I'm thinking I know who lives here and he's 50 something.  You can't be the boyfriend problem.  You know?  It can't be him.  Maybe you're dating his son.

COOPER:  And you'd never seen her before?

RAMSEY:  Bro â€"

COOPER:  In the year that you had been there?

RAMSEY:  Bro, that man, listen, never.  That woman didn't come out the house.  The only kids that came out the house were two little girls.  They played in the backyard.  He had two dogs and my - where I live naturally is next door, my bedroom was upstairs so when I hear kids playing, I know it's them.  They did the same thing, play in the backyard for a couple of hours, go back in the house.  Same thing every day.

The neighborhood knows them as his grandchildren.  So no big deal.  He had his grandkids over all the time, I thought.
#21940

COOPER:  So yesterday, what happened?

RAMSEY:  I'm going to tell it all.  Around 3:00, I was on my porch and the mailman put his mail in my mail.  I looked at it like here's his mail when he come home.  Couple of minutes later, he pulled up.  He checked the mailbox, grabbed his paper.  Before he went in the house, I said Ariel, here goes your mail.  We just had the same conversation when I hand him the mail.  He said, they can't get it right.  I said, damn postal service.  That's it.

He left.  I jumped on my bike, went to McDonald's.  Came back home, I'm in my house, but I'm in the living room and I'm right by the front door, because I'm looking out the front door, and man, this girl screamed like a car had hit a kid, which made me, you know, stop eating, what the hell was that.  You know, so when I got up, I saw this - my neighbor across the street, he run across the street and I'm, like - I'm thinking, where you going, because ain't nobody next door because I just saw Ariel leave.

And I know ain't nobody over there.  Heard that girl scream and saw him run across the street, and I went outside and wondered what he was doing, and - Amanda said, I'm stuck in here, help get me out.  So he - guy don't know English that well or panicked, he just looked at me and it's a girl.  And that's all he did.  So here I come with my, you know, half eaten Big Mac and I looked and I said well, what's up.

And she's like I've been trapped in here, he won't let me out, me and my baby.  I said well, we ain't going to talk no more, come on.  I'm trying to get the door open, I can't, because he torture chambered it some kind of way and locked it up, right?  So I did what I had to do and kicked the bottom of the door, and she crawled out of it.  She grabs her baby, which threw me off, all right, so fine.  I got some girl and her kid.

COOPER:  And so you moved in about a year ago.  You'd seen Ariel Castro around, right?

CHARLES RAMSEY:  When I moved there, only because he was my neighbor.

COOPER:  Right.

RAMSEY:  You know what I mean?

COOPER:  What was he like?

RAMSEY:  Cool.  He wasn't no freak of nature.  He was like me and you, because he talked about the same things you talk about.

COOPER:  Right.

RAMSEY:  You talk about you.  You know what I mean?  You know, regular stuff, bro.

Copies of the print are in many Western collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the British Museum in London, the Art Institute of Chicago, and in Claude Monet's house in Giverny, France. There is also a copy in the Asian Gallery of the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia.

This particular woodblock is one of the most recognized works of Japanese art in the world. It depicts an enormous wave threatening boats near the Japanese prefecture of Kanagawa.

While sometimes assumed to be a tsunami, the wave is, as the picture's title notes, more likely to be a large okinami â€" literally "wave of the open sea." As in all the prints in the series, it depicts the area around Mount Fuji under particular conditions, and the mountain itself appears in the background.

The Great Wave off Kanagawa (Kanagawa-oki nami-ura, lit. "Under a Wave off Kanagawa"), also known as The Great Wave or simply The Wave, is a woodblock print by the Japanese artist Hokusai.

An example of ukiyo-e art, it was published sometime between 1830 and 1833 (during the Edo Period) as the first in Hokusai's series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku sanjūrokkei), and is his most famous work.

let me get this straight because tb does not condone cruelty to animals, much less vegetables, or so i believe...

the cucumber that was simply standing up for its rights ended up being abused?

how did the case go?  was the judge biased?  who was the witness?  a carrot?  an eggplant?

was justice served?

here are hopes that, for once, fairness issued forth from our judicial courts.  (i hope too that the abuser didn't get pregnant.)

Despite the risks, Mayon and its near-perfect cone is a favourite spot for volcano watchers. Most enjoy the occasional nighttime spectacle of the rim lit by flowing lava .

The volcano has a trail to the crater that is walkable, though it is steep and strewn with rocks and debris from past eruptions.

Residents in towns around the volcano were surprised by the sudden activity .

"It was so sudden that many of us panicked," said Jun Marana, a 46-year-old bus driver and father of two. "When we stepped out we saw this huge column against the blue sky."

Marana said the ash column dispersed after about an hour, but said he was not taking his chances and was prepared to leave his home.

Yesterday's eruption was not unusual for the restive Mayon, said Renato Solidum, the head of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

The 2,460-metre mountain has erupted about 40 times during the last 400 years.

In 2010, thousands of residents moved to temporary shelters when the volcano ejected ash up to eight kilometres from the crater.

Solidum said no alert was raised after the latest eruption and no evacuation was being planned.

Climbers are not allowed when an alert is up. However, Solidum said that even with no alert raised, the immediate zone around the volcano is supposed to be a no-go area because of the risk of a sudden eruption.

"We will rappel the rescue team, and we will rappel them up again," he said from Legazpi, the provincial capital at the foot of the mountain.

An Austrian mountaineer and two Spaniards were rescued with small bruises, he said.

Marti Calleja, another local tour operator, said his company was guiding for some of the foreigners.

"It rained like hell with stones. It was sudden and there was no warning," Calleja said by telephone.

The group was initially trapped about half a kilometre below the crater, Calleja added.

Albay provincial governor Joey Salceda said everyone on the mountain had been accounted for at midday, with the exception of another foreigner.

Eight people were injured, and were winched off the mountain by helicopter. Salceda said the others were in the process of being brought down the mountain. Ash clouds have cleared over the volcano, which was quiet later in the morning.

"The injured are all foreigners ... They cannot walk. If you can imagine, the boulders there are as big as cars. Some of them slid and rolled down.

Twenty-seven people, including at least nine foreigners and their guides, had spent the night camping on the slopes of the mountain in two groups before setting out at daybreak for the crater of the volcano when the sudden explosion jolted the picturesque mountain, which is about 340 kilometres southeast of Manila, in Albay province.

Guide Kenneth Jesalva said rocks "as big as a living room" came raining down, killing and injuring members of his group, some of whom were in critical condition. Jesalva said he rushed back to the base camp at 914 metres to call for help.

Thank you Maám Isles, just wondering why the bride did not manage to go out in the limo, like triangular shape, i hope none.

i was wondering too, though i can't help but think that it's not easy to get out of a speeding vehicle and limo drivers can hardly hear their passengers because of a glass (or whatever transparent material it's made of) partition between the front seat and the passengers' seats at the back.  the fire must have conflagrated fast.

Newlywed Pinay, 4 others die in California limo fire

Manila Bulletin
07 May 2013

San Francisco (AP) - A limousine taking nine women to a night on the town to celebrate a newlywed Filipina bride erupted in flames, killing the bride and four others who were trapped inside as the other four escaped with burn and smoke inhalation injuries, authorities said Sunday.

Relatives told the San Francisco Chronicle and the San Jose Mercury News that one of the dead was Neriza Fojas, 31, a registered nurse from Fresno who recently wed and was planning to repeat her marriage vows in her native Philippines next month.

The driver, who was not hurt, told investigators he was driving the women on the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge Saturday night when one of them complained of smoke inside the passenger compartment, San Mateo County Coroner Robert Foucrault said.

Lobsang told the New York Times he disposed of 10 to 15 bodies a week and was paid about $5 for each one. "I come here every day, and its about the same. Some bodies smell worse. Some are bigger, heavier. No big deal."

http://factsanddetails.com/
#21988
When Lobsang finished cutting the body, he looked up at the vultures on the hillside. He signaled them, with a flick of the wrist, that it was feeding time. On cue the birds descended in a mass of flapping wings and pecking beaks, devouring the remains in minutes...No trace of the woman's body remained...The vultures, about of 50 of them, ambled slowly up the hill and took to the air with evident difficulty, overfed as they are from the daily ritual."
#21989
"He took one bone after another, placing them on a flat stone. Raising a small sledgehammer over his head, he smashed them into small pieces...so small they could be devoured by vultures...separating the yield into two small piles, flesh and bone...next to last came her skull, which burst into pieces with a sharp crack, when the hammer came down."

Description of a Sky Burial

Describing a sky burial held around noon near a Buddhist temple in the remote town of Lirong, in a Tibetan area in Sichuan, Seth Faison wrote in the New York Times, "The body of a 67-year-old woman was stiff after three days of transport from her home more than 200 miles away... Lobsang, the monk who performed this sky burial, tied a burlap bag around his waist like an apron. Working methodically, with the dispatch of a professional, he stripped the flesh from each of the woman's limbs." [Source: Seth Faison, New York Times, July 6, 1999]

Sky burial are usually performed in places where wood is scarce and the climate is cold. Tibetans can’t bury their dead because the ground is often frozen, nor can they burn them because there is little wood. The bones are collected and taken home and scattered. For important lamas the bones are mixed with mud and made into a chorten.

Communists officials banned sky burials in the 1960s and 70s. As part of tolerance for Tibetan customs and religious practices, sky burials were allowed again in the 1980s. The vice governor of Tibet told the New York Times in 1999, "We encourage cremation but we allow sky burial. It’s a Tibetan custom...Tibetans feel very strongly about sky burial. A few years ago, a Chinese soldier shot a vulture and was stoned by Tibetans. It was understandable. if vultures are fair game, who is going to do sky burial."
