Casualties after Mayon spews ash

MANILA, Philippines (10th UPDATE) - Five people are confirmed dead after the Mayon Volcano spewed rocks and steam in a phreatic explosion Tuesday, May 7.

"Mayon Volcano at 8:00:25 AM today, produced a small phreatic event that lasted about 73 seconds," the Phivolcs said in its official advisory.

A phreatic explosion is caused by the heating of water by the magma underneath the volcano's crater, sending steam, water, and volcanic material out.

"The gray to brown clouds reached 500 meters above the summit and drifted west southwest. No volcanic earthquake was detected within the past 24-hour observation period," Phivolcs said.

The agency said levels of seismic and gas emissions from the volcano are still very low, which does not indicate any heightened activity.

The alert level for the volcano is still at zero, which means "no eruption is imminent." "However, small phreatic explosions including small steam and ash ejections may occur suddenly with little or no warning," the agency warned.

Solidum also told dzBB that they will continue monitoring Mayon to see if they need to raise the volcano's alert level.

"It is strongly advised that the public refrain from entering the 6-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) due to the threat of sudden steam-driven eruptions and rock falls from the upper and middle slopes of the volcano," Phivolcs added.

Casualties

Albay Governor Joey Salceda said on the ABS-CBN News Channel that 5 mountain climbers died after being hit by rocks cascading down the slopes of the volcano. Four were foreigners, he said, while the other one was a local tour guide.

He said they have yet to confirm the identities of the deceased climbers, as the bodies still have to be brought down from the volcano.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reports at least 7 climbers were also injured. There have been three groups of mountain climbers going up the volcano when the event happened, Eduardo del Rosario NDRRMC Executive Director, said on ANC.

Salceda, on his Facebook page, also said that the provincial government is already organizing a rescue mission for the mountaineers still on the slopes of Mayon.

He later issued a ban on all activities within the Permanent Danger Zone, including farming and mountain climbing.

Caught by suprise

Residents in towns around the picturesque volcano famous for its near-perfect cone said they were surprised by the sudden activity, which came as many were having breakfast.

"It was so sudden that many of us panicked," Jun Marana, a 46-year-old bus driver and father of two, told AFP by telephone.

"When we stepped out we saw this huge column against the blue sky."

Marana said the ash column was dispersed by winds after about an hour, but said he was not taking his chances and was prepared to leave his home anytime.

Mayon, about 330 kilometres (200 miles) southeast of Manila, has erupted 48 times in recorded history.

In 1814, more than 1,200 people were killed when lava flows buried the town of Cagsawa.

In December 2009 tens of thousands of villagers were displaced when Mayon spewed ash and lava.

The volcano also erupted in August 2006. There were no direct deaths caused by the explosion, but the following December a passing typhoon unleashed an avalanche of volcanic mud from its slopes that killed 1,000 people. - Rappler.com, with reports from Agence France-Presse

Three German tourists and their Filipino tour guide were killed yesterday when the Mayon volcano exploded into life, spewing massive boulders "as big as cars" and a giant ash cloud.

Another tourist is missing and presumed dead.

Twenty-seven people, including at least nine foreigners and their guides, had spent the night camping on the slopes of the mountain in two groups before setting out at daybreak for the crater of the volcano when the sudden explosion jolted the picturesque mountain, which is about 340 kilometres southeast of Manila, in Albay province.

Guide Kenneth Jesalva said rocks "as big as a living room" came raining down, killing and injuring members of his group, some of whom were in critical condition. Jesalva said he rushed back to the base camp at 914 metres to call for help.

Albay provincial governor Joey Salceda said everyone on the mountain had been accounted for at midday, with the exception of another foreigner.

Eight people were injured, and were winched off the mountain by helicopter. Salceda said the others were in the process of being brought down the mountain. Ash clouds have cleared over the volcano, which was quiet later in the morning.

"We will rappel the rescue team, and we will rappel them up again," he said from Legazpi, the provincial capital at the foot of the mountain.

An Austrian mountaineer and two Spaniards were rescued with small bruises, he said.

Marti Calleja, another local tour operator, said his company was guiding for some of the foreigners.

"It rained like hell with stones. It was sudden and there was no warning," Calleja said by telephone.

The group was initially trapped about half a kilometre below the crater, Calleja added.

Yesterday's eruption was not unusual for the restive Mayon, said Renato Solidum, the head of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

The 2,460-metre mountain has erupted about 40 times during the last 400 years.

In 2010, thousands of residents moved to temporary shelters when the volcano ejected ash up to eight kilometres from the crater.

Solidum said no alert was raised after the latest eruption and no evacuation was being planned.

Climbers are not allowed when an alert is up. However, Solidum said that even with no alert raised, the immediate zone around the volcano is supposed to be a no-go area because of the risk of a sudden eruption.

Despite the risks, Mayon and its near-perfect cone is a favourite spot for volcano watchers. Most enjoy the occasional nighttime spectacle of the rim lit by flowing lava .

The volcano has a trail to the crater that is walkable, though it is steep and strewn with rocks and debris from past eruptions.
