How To Tips / Can't Sleep?
June 15, 2007, 07:12:43 AM
Can’t sleep? You may have tried medication. You know you have to stay away from bad guys like caffeine, alcohol and nicotine. And you’ve probably heard it’s not wise to exercise too vigorously or eat too big a meal a couple of hours before bedtime. Perhaps you’ve even tried to stick to a regular sleep-wake schedule. Still have problems getting a sound sleep? Try these snooze tips you may not have heard before.

1. Let go of your concerns and worries.

Anxieties often seem magnified in the still of the night. Dealing with them can help you sleep. Write down your worries and possible solutions before you go to bed, so you don’t need to ruminate in the middle of the night. A journal or “to do” list may be very helpful in letting you put away these concerns until the next day when you are fresh.

2. Do some deep-breathing exercises.

Find yourself constantly yawning? Some experts believe it may be linked to not getting enough oxygen to the brain. Deep-breathing exercises, in which you focus on taking long, deep abdominal breaths, may help relieve pent-up tension and the yawns.

3. Cut the light at night.

Avoid bright light, which signals the brain to be alert, within 2 to 3 hours of bedtime or if you wake up during the night. Using dimmer switches in living rooms and bathrooms before bed can be helpful. And consider blackout shades or an eye-shade to keep out early morning light.

4. Hide your clock.

A big, illuminated digital clock may cause you to focus on the time and make you feel stressed and anxious. This is very difficult for most of us, so turn the clock away from your eyes so you would have to turn it to see the time. You may decide not to make the effort and go right back to sleep.

5. Follow the 20-minute rule.

If you can’t fall asleep in about 20 minutes, whether at bedtime or after awakening in the night, don’t just lie in bed. Do something else, like reading, watching television, or listening to music, until you feel tired. The anxiety of being unable to fall asleep can actually contribute to insomnia.

6. Do some visualization.

Do not torture your mind with troubled thoughts which will not allow you to sleep. Instead focus all your attention on your toes or visualize walking down an endless stairwell. Thinking about repetitive or mindless things will help your brain to shut down and adjust to sleep.

7. Get up and eat some turkey.

Turkey contains tryptophan, a major building block for making serotonin, a neurotransmitter, which sends messages between nerve cells and causes feelings of sleepiness. Note that L-tryptophan doesn’t act on the brain unless you eat it on an empty stomach with no protein present, so keep some turkey in the refrigerator for 3am.

8. Redo your bedroom.

Make your bedroom more sleep-friendly. Make sure it is well ventilated and the temperature consistent. And try to keep it quiet. You could use a fan or a “white noise” machine to help block outside noises. Also replace a sagging mattress and deflated pillows. If you must keep a computer in the bedroom, cover the green light on the monitor with black electrical tape. And eliminate clutter, another possible anxiety inducer.

9. Wake up with the sun.

Sunlight helps the body’s internal biological clock reset itself each day. So if possible, expose yourself to bright light within an hour of waking up for the day, either by taking a 30-minute walk outside or by lingering in a part of the house that gets a lot of sunlight. (ririanproject.com)

How To Tips / Give yourself a lift...
June 15, 2007, 07:03:17 AM
(ririanproject.com)

1. Use your muscles.

Burning energy makes energy â€" doesn’t sound right, does it? But being active does make you feel more energetic. And laziness only begets more laziness. How can you be more active when you feel like slouching on the couch all day? This takes a bit of willpower and lots of persuasion. Go on regular walks with your dog or a friend, and visit the gym for a good 45-minute workout on a regular basis. Make this a habit, and you’ll always be known as the “Speedy Gonzalez” of the neighborhood.

2. A quick fix.

Cheap and readily available in coffee, soft drinks and pill form, caffeine has been the drug of choice for college students and truck drivers alike. Be careful, though, caffeine is a double-edged sword and too much of it can cause you to become jittery and can dehydrate you. As an alternative, try a power drink or a sports drink with added electrolytes.

3. Breakfast like a king.

They don’t call it the most important meal of the day for nothing. A sensible breakfast will give you the boost you need each morning to last you through the whole day. Hey, if you don’t put gas in your car, it won’t run. Same goes for healthy meals in the morning. To stay full longer, try oats. Oats are full of fiber and low on the glycemic index which means that the sugar is released into your bloodstream slowly, keeping your energy levels constant. Oats are also packed with B vitamins, which lower stress and help convert carbohydrates into energy.

4. Avoid quick-fix foods.

Candy, chocolate, hamburgers, chicken wings, french fries, etc., all these foods are high in sugar or fat and can do a huge number on your energy levels. A quick fact: sugar puts you to sleep. It does not, as most people think, give you more energy. So cut out all those candies and chocolates, and start eating more fruits and vegetables.

5. Tea for me.

Drinking tea regularly every day has been found to increase one’s stamina. However, the type of tea you drink is very important. You should stay away from tea that comes in tea bags, because chances are these contain high levels of caffeine. Instead, buy some dried herbs from your local supermarket and boil some water with them. Natural herbal teas are healthier than the bagged ones. A combination of Siberian Ginseng extract, peppermint, and green tea is a great choice.

6. Supplement your body.

Energy is generated in each and every cell in the body through a chemical reaction, which combines fuel from food and oxygen. The catalysts that make these reactions happen are the vitamins and minerals in out diet. Supplementing our diet can boost energy levels and make up for any deficiencies. The most effective energy boosting nutrients include B complex vitamins and Co-enzyme Q10. Chromium supplements also help stabilize blood sugar levels.

7. Head for a bar.

No, not the type that serves beer, I’m talking about energy bars. Jam-packed with carbs, these bars are designed to provide fuel for a short-term energy boost. Just make sure you read the nutritional breakdown on the label, some of them can contain more fat and sugar than a regular chocolate bar.

8. Drink more water.

Again, sounds obvious, but we’re not drinking enough fluids. This helps you stay hydrated, curbs your desire for an unhealthy snack and keeps you from getting drowsy. If you’re stuck in a boring meeting and you feel yourself nodding off, a sip of water will help you regain your focus.

9. Eat lunch every day.

Too many of us think we’re too busy to stop for lunch and don’t recognize that the resultant midday slump will impact our productivity and attention span. It’s always important to supply your body with a regular input of nutrients. You don’t need to have a heavy meat and potatoes meal at noon every day, but make sure you eat something. And avoid eating while you work at your desk; take a break for lunch even if it’s only 20 minutes.

10. Snack more often.

And avoid big meals. Eating a lot in one sitting causes the blood to divert from your brain and to your digestive system. This can make you feel lethargic. Instead, try eating four or five smaller meals each day. An apple or yogurt are good choices for a quick pick-me-up. Steer clear of chocolate bars or sugary donuts. Although they create a quick boost in energy, your blood sugar levels will drop even faster afterward, and you’ll feel more tired than ever.

11. Take a breather.

With each breath, cells are replenished with oxygen and the energy to perform all kinds of essential functions. You don’t need to be taught to breathe, right? Wrong. Most people use only a fraction of their lung capacity, which means they are only taking in one third of oxygen needed. Spend a few minutes each day working on your breathing. Make sure you are sitting comfortably, clear you mind and make sure to breathe in through your nose and out of your mouth in order to maximize your oxygen intake and carbon dioxide expenditure.

12. Sitting comfortably.

You wouldn’t expect a sedentary activity like sitting down to wear you out, would you? Actually, a bad sitting position puts the body under enormous stress and can leave us exhausted by the end of the day. Most people sitting at a desk slump forward. Apart from causing physical imbalance and discomfort, this also interferes with the natural working of the respiratory system and can starve the body of vital oxygen. So choose seating that supports healthy posture. Good posture helps to keep the natural curves of the spine relaxed and ready to absorb and distribute stress encountered during rest and activity.

13. Get some laughter.

There may be more to the song “Put on a Happy Face” than just a catchy tune - putting on a happy face is actually good for you, and those around you. If you really need to cheer up and increase your energy, then watch a sitcom for half an hour, or better yet, get tickets to your favorite comedy club. Laughter has been proven time and again to be the best therapy for depression and lack of energy.

14. Splash your face with cold water.

Just like your morning shower wakes you up, washing your face will refresh you. Try splashing a little cold water on your face and you might banish your lethargy. Often, just washing your hands will make you feel less sleepy.

15. Take a short break.

Did you know that a simple thing like getting up from your chair and going to the bathroom can work miracles for your productivity? Stand up and stretch. It doesn’t have to be big and showy, accompanied by a loud yawn. Just get up and turn around, shake your feet unobtrusively and flex your fingers. If you can’t leave the office, sit back and breathe deeply to relax yourself and increase your oxygen intake. Stretching will get the kinks out of your neck and shoulders and increase your blood circulation.

16. Move and get your blood flowing.

Go for a walk in the park, take the stairs or hand-deliver a memo to another department. Get the blood flowing in your body; it will increase your metabolic rate and decrease your drowsiness.

17. Catch some rays.

Optimize the amount of light you’re exposed to during the day. Walk around outside instead of using the elevator from the parking garage. Try to reposition your work surface so you can see out a window. Fluorescent lighting is draining as it gives off too much color (usually yellow) and does not mimic the color spectrum of natural daylight. It also lacks the ultraviolet light of sunlight, which helps the body to produce vitamin D, essential for body growth and repair.

18. Aromatherapy.

Aromatherapy has been used for centuries as a therapeutic aid for weakness, sleep deprivation, depression, and other psychological ailments. Don’t dismiss nice-smelling things as too feminine or pointless: truck drivers have always used the scent of oranges to stay awake during long drives. Seems there’s something in the zesty scent that keeps you mentally alert.

19. Work on a different task.

If your routine is getting to you, work on something else that allows you to be more creative for a little while, pick a totally random piece of a larger project, and complete it. Often, just challenging your brain will ward off the midday slump.

20. Learn to power nap.

About 85% of mammals get their quota of sleep as an accumulation of naps during the day and night. Ok, so your boss isn’t going to appreciate you nodding off wherever you please, but a well-timed nap can do wonders for your energy levels and productivity. A good time to get some shut-eye is after lunch when most of us experience a bit of a downturn in the energy stakes. Take off your shoes and put your calls on hold. The trick here is to avoid napping for too long. Fifteen minutes is all you need.

21. Interact with coworkers.

Strike up a conversation at the photocopy machine, go to someone’s desk instead of sending an e-mail or throw a stress ball to each other if your work area allows it. A friendly conversation can make the day go faster, and having a few laughs together can improve everyone’s mood.

22. Think positive.

Attitude can have a powerful influence on how dynamic we feel. There’s nothing quite like dreading a particular task to make us feel tired and unmotivated. Fortunately there’s a neat little mental trick we can play on ourselves to help us over negative hurdles. Instead of focusing on the potential horror of the task, concentrate on the feeling of satisfaction you will enjoy when you have finished that task.

23. Invest in an ionizer.

It‘s a well know that people generally feel better and more energetic when they are by the sea. A major cause of this feel good factor is an abundance of negative ions in the sea air. Negative ions improve clear headedness and energy are formed whenever there is flowing water. This is perhaps why showers can be more invigorating than baths. At home and in the office negative ions tend to be in short supply. An ionizer, which pumps out negative ions is no substitute for a fortnight in the Costa del Sol, but it can actually reduce fatigue and improve mental clarity at the same time.

24. Turn down the heat.

Working in a cooler environment keeps you alert. Warm surroundings evoke the physical sensations and mental images of sleep. However, if your coworkers start shivering, keep your hands off the thermostat and take a good look at your wardrobe choices. Remove your jacket after lunch and avoid wearing a sweater, turtleneck or heavy polo shirt.

25. Focus on your plans after work.

Write down your remaining tasks so that you can clearly see at what time you’ll be leaving. Take a moment to think of what you’ll be doing in the evening so you have something positive to think about. This could be picking up your spouse to go see a movie or simply getting together with buddies for a few beers. Whatever it is, it’ll help you get out of the rut. In return, knowing that you have to leave work at a certain time will likely help you be more productive.

26. Get to bed earlier.

Chronic insomnia could be a symptom of a bigger problem and will cause you to drag in the early afternoon. Too much partying can have the same effect. Try to get the amount of sleep your body needs and you’ll be better able to stay alert all day.

27. Reduce your stress.

Your constant exhaustion might result from dissatisfaction with your job, your home life or yourself. It could also be a sign of depression. And while short-term stress produces adrenalin in your body, making you more alert, long-term stress, longer than a few hours, will wear away at your body’s natural defences and leave you feeling over-tired. Be honest with yourself and take some action to reduce the stressors in your life so that you feel better all day, every day.

The number is growing. And the computers are crashing.  :D

Our second month anniversary will be next, next week, or three weeks before Chin invades Thailand to reunite with Rose and Paul, all Tubag Bohol peacekeepers.  ;D

Or three weeks before Tubag Bohol's PrinsesaSaDagat flies from Scotland to Bohol and tastes Alturas sliced bread all for the sake of gastronomic curiosity.  :P

Ladies and gentlemen, Tubag Bohol now has a PR Manager. Her name is Rose. She will also help Chin in welcoming and massaging newbies. Or massacring newbies?  ;D

These two lovely ladies have so many things in common. Now I'm in deep trouble.  ;D

Jokes and Humor / Judge
June 15, 2007, 05:51:10 AM
As a judge, I was sentencing criminal defendants when I saw a vaguely familiar face. I reviewed his record and found that the man was a career criminal, except for a five-year period in which there were no convictions. "Milton," I asked, puzzled, "how is it you were able to stay out of trouble for those five years?" "I was in prison," he answered. "You should know that -- you were the one who sent me there." "That's not possible," I said. "I wasn't even a judge then. "No, you weren't the judge," the defendant countered, smiling mischievously. "You were my lawyer." contributed by Philip R. Riley (Reader's Digest)

The Bible says that God is a spirit (without flesh and bones), and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth.

We can always meet God anytime, anywhere. The belief that we need to go to a place to meet God is completely wrong.

Going to church is not really intended to meet God but to have fellowship with the body of believers, thus encouraging each other.

You can meet God today by calling on His name through Jesus. In the Old Testament, God said: "Call unto Me, and I will answer thee."

And the New Testament says: "Whoever shall call the name of Jesus, will be saved."

This is so easy a climb to the pedestal. Mike, better upgrade your criteria based on quality and not on quantity. Peace!

Rose, do one thing: compile your posts and publish them into a book format.  :( I'm serious. Really.

I had mentioned somewhere else that I have been thinking of coming up with "The Best of Tubag Bohol" book - mga tinapok nga huna-huna ug pagbati sa mga Bol-anon nga nakabugto sa garter sa inyong panty, brief, ug bra tungod sa pagkatawa, pagkasuko, ug pagkakurat.  :)

P.S. Next time, Mike, you better ask Chin or me first before you do some welcoming of sorts.

Okay, I now divide the power to welcome new members.

Just one reminder: if you fail to welcome one new convert of Tubag Bohol, you'd be asked to bare your fighting form.

A traditional rule holds that in behalf of and on behalf of have distinct meanings. Accordingly, you should use in behalf of to mean “for the benefit of,” as in We raised money in behalf of the earthquake victims. And you should use on behalf of to mean “as the agent of, on the part of,” as in The guardian signed the contract on behalf of the child. But as the two meanings are quite close, the phrases are often used interchangeably, even by reputable writers. (bartleby.com)

Health and Food / Avoid Skin Cancer
June 14, 2007, 11:24:29 PM
(iVillage Total Health) - Dermatologists, cancer experts and public health officials are urging Americans to practice sun safety during the upcoming summer months of sunshine and outdoor activities. New studies and precautions have been announced in observance of Sun Safety Week, from June 3-9.

Among the safety precautions recommended by the American Cancer Society (ACS): wearing hats, long sleeves and pants, using sunscreen and avoiding the outdoors during hours when the sun is most intense (between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.).

New research from the University of Alabama at Birmingham suggests that drinking green tea may help sun worshippers avoid skin cancer. A study published in the May issue of the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry found that plant chemicals in green tea may aid in inhibiting tumor growth.

"Green tea prevents UV radiation induced suppression of the immune system, which has been considered a risk factor for the development of skin cancer," Santosh Katiyar, the lead Alabama researcher, said in a press release.

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. Despite warnings about the harmful effects of the sun, more than 1 million cases of non-melanoma skin cancer occur each year, according to the ACS. The deadliest form of skin cancer - melanoma - is strongly associated with excessive exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UV), which can come from sunlight or tanning booths and beds. The ACS estimates that 59,940 new cases of melanoma will be diagnosed and more than 8,000 people will die from melanoma in 2007.

Dr. Len Lichtenfeld, the ACS's deputy chief medical officer, said a new report on adolescent and teen sunburns showed that much work is still needed to prevent early sun exposure.

"Despite evidence that excessive sun exposure in childhood contributes to the risk of skin cancers later in life, our study reveals that sunburns remain common among adolescents," Lichtenfeld said in a radio interview. "Further, most teens still view a tan as not only a good look, but also a sign of good health."

To further the message of staying safe in the sun, the ACS is again promoting its Slip! Slop! Slap! campaign. It reminds people to slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen and slap on hat when going outdoors. Using sunglasses to protect the eyes is also recommended.

People who want to minimize their risk of skin cancer can do so by following these skin care recommendations:

    * Beware of sores that are not healing. People may think a sore or pimple is persistent, but it may be more serious and possibly an early form of skin cancer.

    * Monitor your moles. Melanoma usually develops in a pre-existing mole. Closely monitoring moles for changes in size, shape, color and number can help. If any change is noted, a physician should be consulted immediately.

    * Be cautious of bleeding and scabbing. Any area of the skin that is bleeding, scabbing or releasing fluids is extremely dangerous and a physician should be consulted immediately.

    * Monitor exposure to the sun. The more sun exposure, the greater risk of skin cancer. People who work outside or individuals who live in tropical climates must understand they are not immune to the sun and that the application of sunscreen is vital throughout the year. The sun is just as damaging to the skin during the winter months as it is in the summer months.

    * Know your genes. If there is a history of skin cancer in your family and you have light hair and light eyes, you are at a greater risk for skin cancer and should always protect yourself with sunscreen.

Health and Food / Self-care Remedy for Hair Loss
June 14, 2007, 11:22:23 PM
1. Massage the scalp with 2-3 drops of essential oil or a good vegetable oil. Massage well into the scalp so that the oil gets into deep roots of hair. Wrap the hair in plastic wrap and place a warm towel around it. Leave it for 2 to three hours or overnight. Shampoo the hair with a mild shampoo. Practicing this at regular basis would help your hair pores get rejuvenated.

2. Eat a handful of white sesame seeds every morning. One handful of these small seeds contains about 1,200 mg. of calcium and magnesium to ignite the required nourishments of your scalp not to loose hair.

3. Take some yogurt everyday (unless you are allergic to milk).

4. Rinse hair with a mix of apple cider vinegar tea to help hair grow.

5. Mix little warmer castor and almond oil and massage over scalp at least once a week.

6. Grind lime seeds and black pepper in equal number in some water and apply on the scalp at regular intervals.

7. Scrub the bald portion with onions till it becomes red. Then applying honey, scrub the scalp once a day.

8. Massage almond oil on scalp 2 to 3 times a day. Further hair loss will stop by doing this practice.

9. Massage coconut milk or Aloe Vera gel into the scalp and hair. Leave it for ½ hour, and then rinse with warm water. Repeat 3 times a week.

10. Massage honey with egg yolk into the scalp and hair. Leave for a 1/2 hour, then rinse to prevent hair loss.

Breast augmentation is less invasive than some surgeries, but it does introduce a foreign objectâ€"the breast implantâ€"into the body and this increases the risk of complications.

Medical Complications

The most common complication of breast implants is capsular contraction. This occurs when scar tissue forms around the breast implant and stiffens. This squeezes the implant, and causes the breast itself to feel hard. It may also cause rippling in the surface of the implant, resulting in some rippling at the surface of the breast itself and even some pain. The only way to treat capsular contraction is additional surgery to either remove the scar tissue or replace the implant itself.

Over time, there is also the risk that the implants may break and leak. If the implant is filled with saline, there is no immediate health risk, but the implant will quickly deflate because the body will absorb the saline naturally.

If the implants are filled with silicone, a leak may not be noticeable right away. The gel will accumulate inside the breast where the implant is placed and cause no noticeable difference in the breasts. However, if this silicone happens to pass into other parts of your body it may cause more of a problem. Because of this, the FDA recommends that every woman with silicone breast implants have an MRI of her breasts three years after the initial surgery and every two years after that to ensure that the implant is intact. Additionally, all implants should be replaced approximately every 10 years.

“A breast implant isn’t meant to last a lifetime,” says Dr. Deborah Bash, spokesperson for the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. “All types will wear out with time.”

Breast augmentation also carries the risk of numbness in the nipples or breast itself due to nerve damage. Most of the time this numbness subsides with time, but it may be permanent in some women. Oversensitivity is also sometimes a problem.

Infection is rare, but also a possibility. A small percentage of women will develop an infection after their surgery. If antibiotics are not successful, the implant may need to be removed until the infection clears.

Rarely, blood will collect inside the breast after the surgery and will not clear on its own. When this occurs, surgery will be needed to remove the excess blood and control the bleeding.

Lifestyle Factors

Breast implants will not interfere with pregnancy or breastfeeding. However, as the breasts often change shape and size during pregnancy, this may change how your breasts look and feel. If you are planning on getting pregnant, be sure to discuss this with your doctor prior to surgery.

It is also important to understand that breast implants may interfere with standard tools that screen for breast cancer. The implant may block view of abnormal growth in the breast and make mammography more difficult. It is essential, therefore, to inform the technician at the time of your annual mammogram that you have implants. Women with implants may need to have additional images taken that would not be part of a standard mammography. Though this will help to ensure that your technician gets a full view of your breast tissue, it is typically not covered by insurance and it is an expense you may want to consider when calculating the long-term cost of your surgery.(medicalnewstoday.com)

Maribojoc - Bohol / History of Maribojoc, Bohol
June 14, 2007, 10:34:58 PM
The earliest historical records about Maribojoc are linked with the Christianization of Bohol. Maribojoc was already a flourishing village when the Jesuit priests, Fr. Juan de Torres and Fr. Gabriel Sanchez landed in Baclayon in 1595 bringing the cross for the first time in Bohol. Fr. Francisco Colin, an early Jesuit historian, listed the town's name as Malabooch and later changed to Malabohoc. How it became Maribojoc is not known.

During the pre-Spanish era, the town's name was "Dunggoan", derived from the old port located at the shore of the famous bay where sailors used to land and engage business with the early settlers. Dunggoan was ruled by Datu Madag with Sadok and Pudit as his aides. The Maribojoc parish, officially known as "Paroquia de Sta. Cruz", was founded in 1767 when the Jesuits left Bohol. Maribojoc was one of the nine big villages founded by the Augustinian Recollect Friars when they took over in 1768. It was during the time of the Recollects that the foundation of the Maribojoc church was laid in 1798 on what was once a swampy land and was finished in 1816, after 18 years of work. At the back of the church is a flight of stone stairs built in 1864. Earlier, in 1796, the Punta Cruz watchtower was built as a lookout against marauding pirates.

The town of Maribojoc was officially organized on October 15, 1860. The Municipality of Maribojoc, Bohol is a 5th class municipality per DOF Order No. 49-91 dated September 14, 1991. Twenty-two barangays comprise the municipality occupying a total land area of 53.31 square kilometres with a population of approximately 17,000 people. Its inhabitants are warm and hospitable like any Boholano, speak Bisaya and able to speak and understand English and Filipino languages. Agriculture and fishing are the two main sources of livelihood of its inhabitants. (ncc.gov.ph)

Ug nadungog ang uban nga nag-ingon: "Naunsa man diay? Naunsa man diay? "Di ba sakto ang pagbasa sa hukom?"

Apan ang uban miingon: "Wa ba diay ka kadungog sa hunghong nga 'take it, take it, take it.'" "Ah kaingon ko ug dihay gipainom ug tiki-tiki."

"Naunsa man diay ni?"

Si Rose maoy mitubag: "Katulog ug balik, Judge."

Wala motubag si Judge ug misandig pagbalik sa iyang gilingkoran.

Miabot si Paul nga espoting kaayo.

"Kinsa man na sya?"

"Mao nay bana ni Rose."

"Ah mao ba." "Maayo nuon kay nahiabot sya."

"Rose," sangpit ni Paul sa iyang kapikas sa kinabuhi, "manguli na ta kay gikapoy na ko ug panglaba ug way tawo sa balay. Kalimti ning kasoha. Ngano ba diay pud ug dili nila dunggon atong consumisyon for reconsideration di man magsuol atong tiyan."
"Hala, tana, tana, tana, uli na ta."

Miliraw ang mga mata ni Paul: "Yuna pa, asa naman tong imong cellphone? Basin gikawat na pud to - kawaton gani cellphone sulod sa simbahan!"

"Naa ra to diha sulod sa shoulder bag. Kadyot lang gud, Paul, humanon sa gud nato ning kasoha."

Wala nalang pud motingog si Paul. (As usual...)

"Bitaw no, murag mao bitaw to siya."

"Mao gyud."

"Ngano kaha nga nagbakho man to siya ug way tingog-tingog."

"Kini Ang Akong Suliran, Kini Ang Akong Suliran...(with background music) ni Doktora, Abogada Lourdes Libres Rosaroso."

"Mga higala, atong saw-an karong hapona kining sulat-tampo suliran sa usa ka Bol-anon nga wa na kasabot sa pamati sa iyang lawas, ug kini siya gikan diay sa lungsod sa Ubay, lalawigan sa Bohol, akong lalawigan, ug taguon ta lang ang iyang pangalan ug hinganlan nato siya ug Maricel............."

One thousand one hundred seventy two officers and men of the 3rd Battalion of the 164th Infantry Regiment of the American Division under the command of Lt. Col. William H. Considine landed at the Tagbilaran Insular Wharf at 7:00 o'clock in the morning of April 11, 1945.

The convoy taking the American liberation forces to Bohol consisted of a flotilla of six landing ships (medium), six landing crafts (infantry), two landing crafts (support), and one landing craft (medium-rocket).

Upon arrival, the reinforced battalion combat team advanced rapidly to the east and northeast with the mission of destroying all hostile forces in Bohol. Motor patrols were immediately dispatched by Col. Considine, Task Force Commander, and combed the area to the north and east, approximately halfway across the island, but no enemies were found during the reconnaisance. Finally on April, an enemy group of undetermined strength was located to the north of Ginopolan in Valencia, near the Sierra-Bullones boundary.

By April 17, the Task Force was poised to strike in Ginopolan until the 25th, when it was confirmed that the bulk of the Japanese force had been destroyed and beaten in the ten days of action. Bohol was officially declared liberated on May 25, 1945 by Major General William H. Arnold, Commander of the American Division.

About this time, most officers and men of the Bohol Area Command had been processed by units of the United States Eighth Army. On May 31, 1945, the Bohol Area Command was officially deactivated upon orders of Lt. General Robert Eichelberger, Commanding General of the United States Eighth Army.          About fifty years had passed but the recollection of World War II still lingers in the minds of the Filipino people who witnessed the massive and wanton destruction of properties and human lives inflicted by the Japanese military forces. After four years of agony, pain and sufferings the Philippines was liberated. Liberation was a great jubiliation to the Filipino people although it was too costly to the lives of millions of civilians.

Liberation of the neighboring provinces of Leyte and Cebu took several days of fierce fighting both land and air assaults by the American Liberation Forces. But the liberation of Bohol was so dramatic that they landed without firing even a single shot. There was no beach shelling and assault that usually precede a landing in a hostile area. The American troops were welcomed with open arms by a happy crowd of provincial officials, guerilla officers and men and some civilians.

The American troops came after a number of bombings and strafing by American planes on Tagbilaran and the periodic attack at the Japanese garisson by the guerilla where there were more or less two hundred Japanese holed. The Japanese were able to elude from the hands of the Americans when they sneaked out of town when they could no longer hold out as a strong force to fight against the formidable American forces. They were able to wind up in the heavy forested mountains of Valencia, Sierra-Bullones and Jagna until they were caught by the American clearing operation.

Special unit of guerilla soldiers under the American Division was organized to guide and perform reconnaisance work for the American troops while operating against the Japanese stragglers. The Special Unit was under the command of Major Nunag. The American clearing operation and the Special Unit of the Bohol Area Command encountered skirmishes with the Japanese stragglers in the mountains of Valencia and Mayana, Jagna led by Lt. Patricio Pizarras. It was said it cost few American lives and most of the enemies were killed and captured. The negligible few of the remaining Japanese stragglers were entrusted to the hands of the Bohol Area Command. The Bohol liberation was officially proclaimed on May 25, 1945 by the American Liberation Forces. (compiled by JHAD Computer Services)

How To Tips / Refresh Your Soul
June 14, 2007, 04:18:58 PM
1. Learn to quiet your mind.

Is your mind awash in all kinds of debris - trivia, worries, “to do” lists? We tend to be unaware that we are thinking virtually all the time. The incessant stream of thoughts flowing through our minds leaves us very little respite for inner quiet.

But our most valuable and profound moments in life happen when our thoughts become momentarily quiet, and we open up to a direct heartfelt encounter with the world around us. So try some very basic meditation and remember, you’re striving for a quiet, focused mind. Don’t be discouraged. Learning to quiet your mind may take some time. Just keep trying.

2. Develop the happiness habit.

And do this by always looking at the bright side of life and endeavoring to be happy. Don’t let some outer circumstances decide your happiness for you. Happiness is here, within you. Just calm your mind and stay relaxed, and you will experience it. Happiness is inherent in our souls; it is not something to be gained anew, and all that is necessary to do is to uncover it.

3. Just lighten up.

Lighten up. Spring is here at last. The sun is shining, birds are singing and life in general seems that little bit brighter. G.K. Chesterton wrote: “Angels can fly because they can take themselves lightly.” And what works for angels can’t help but be good for us. Levity addresses worry’s tendency to obsess, scoffs at the demon of perfectionism, and exposes the self-absorption that lies at the root of unhappiness.

4. Hang up your troubles.

Before entering your house at night, walk over to a tree and close your eyes for a moment. Rather than taking your worries inside your house, hang them on that “worry tree.” You won’t believe how well it works, and when you’ll pause in the morning to collect your worries, most of them will be gone.

5. Develop tolerance, patience, tact and consideration for others.

Respect is key to our ability to function. It really is following this simple rule: Do unto others as you would have others do unto you. It is the value that makes the world a more decent and civilized place. And when you learn to acknowledge, accept, and value yourself and others you fundamentally shift your perspective in a way that changes how you think and act. So develop tolerance, tact, patience, respect and consideration for others.

6. Soulful housekeeping.

When you want clarity, joy or sexiness - de-clutter on the basis of your intention for a room. Be brave, be bold, be relentless. Once a room is set up, when you bring one thing in, take one thing out. You have to attend to it the way you attend to a garden. It’s about how you nurture yourself: if you’re not doing it with your home, you’re not doing it with yourself. De-cluttering is about the transformation of self. The relief you feel when you let go is amazing. You cannot carry your life around with you.

7. Conjuring everyday bliss.

To be happy we don’t need beauty, but we must accept and like ourselves. Instead of fame, we need optimism. Rather than wealth, we need a purpose. We don’t have to have a special talent but need a job or activities we enjoy. We need wisdom rather than intelligence, autonomy rather than conformity. Happy people resist social pressure and exert personal control. The things needed for happiness are all within our control, and we can work toward them. Act now!

8. Unwrap the present.

Accept the past, focus on the present and don’t stress about the future. The past is over and the future so uncertain. Nostalgia dwells on loss, and expectation is often nothing more than premeditated resentment. But when you reject them both - by wanting what you have, doing what you can, and being who you are - the gift of time is yours to savor.

9. Pray for someone you hate.

Have you ever tried to pray for someone you haven’t forgiven or you hold anger? Hatred was never good for the soul so close your eyes and imagine your enemy’s face in your mind; and then pray, “May so-and-so find peace within his or her soul.” It always works, you simply can’t hate a person and pray for him at the same time.

10. Take the love drug.

What does science know about love? Not much at all. But we do know that people who are in committed relationships and people who are sexually expressive are less depressed; a romantic-love relationship allows both partners to fill their physical, emotional, and intellectual needs without any losses or compromises. Such a relationship provides major personal benefits and increased pleasures from life. So immerse your soul in some love.

11. Pool your tears.

Learn from the ancient Hebrews, they kept tear cups on their mantels - those little porcelain cups in which they saved their tears. Next time you’re crying, try blessing your tears as they fall. And when others grieve, recognize your own tears in their eyes. When we pool our tears, they do everyone a world of good. When we wallow in them, we drown alone.

Though simple to practice, these tips are not easy to perfect. With spiritual no less than with physical exercise, it takes daily discipline to see results. Keep practicing. (ririanproject.com)

Bohol Directory / Bohol Underground Movement
June 14, 2007, 04:15:52 PM
In the early part of 1942 after a fierce battle between the Japanese invaders and the Filipino-American forces, Cebu surrendered and was occupied by the Japanese soldiers. In the middle part of May 1942 the first batch of Japanese soldiers entered Tagbilaran and occupied Bohol. They established garrisons in Tagbilaran  and in Guindulman as their bases of operation.

A small group of Filipino soldiers who were in hiding in the Central part of Bohol organized a guerilla unit under the command of Ismael Ingeniero, then a USAFFE lieutenant. Another group of Filipino soldiers who were hiding in the mountains of Guindulman organized a guerilla movement under the command of Esteban Bernido. These two troops of guerilla units were merged into Bohol Area Command (BAC) under the command of the fiery guerilla leader, Major Ismael Ingeniero and Chief of Staff Esteban Bernido. Two officers from the Philippine Military Academy namely Major Sofio Bayron and Major Heracleo Alano joined the staff together with a Philippine Air force pilot Nick Torrefranca.

A civil government for free Bohol was organized and in a conference held in Batuan with the members of the Provincial Board and Atty. Conrado Marapao (who became governor) agreed that the civil government will continue to function despite the Japanese presence in Tagbilaran and Guindulman with the coordination of the Bohol Area Command. Upon instruction of governor Marapao the Bohol Bolo Batalion and the WAS (Women Auxiliary Service) were activated after it was disbanded during the occupation of Bohol by the Japanese and were affiliated with the BAC. Almost all able-bodied men and women, government officials, teachers, civic and religious organizations joined the Bolo Battalions and WAS organization. Bolo men on one hand were assigned to guard check points and outposts, relay food supply and other important matters from different detachments to the firing lines and headquarters of the BAC. The women (WAS) on the other hand did a great and noble job not only in taking care of the wounded guerilla soldiers, but also in weaving mats, preparing food, making home made cigarettes and entertaining the soldiers by presenting plays and musical programs to boost their morale. Others were planting crops and vegetables besides rice and corn which increased foodstuff stock, enough to feed the soldiers and civilian evacuees from nearby islands.

The seat of the Resistance Government of Bohol was in Carmen. Colonel W. Fertigue of the U.S. Army (Mindanao) through radiogram received confirmation of Atty. Conrado Marapao, Sr.'s appointment as governor of Free Local Civil Government of Bohol on May 21,1943 by designated President Manuel Roxas, and the authorization to print emergency notes with the appointment of Provincial auditor Dalmacio Ramos, Sr. as Chairman of the Currency Board, Treasurer Doroteo Toledo and Fiscal Jose Borromeo as members of the board. Also included were the appointment of government officials who served the Free Local Civil Government in Carmen whose appointments were all approved and confirmed by President in exile Manuel L. Quezon and General Douglas MacArthur.

The Bohol Area Command (BAC) general headquarters was in Maitum, Catigbian, a wooded area between Batuan and Catigbian that later on became "Behind the Clouds", which served as a secret guerilla headquarters where most guerilla strategic plans were decided and where the enemy soldiers and spies were tried and silenced. It was a strictly forbidden place for civilians and served as meeting place for guerilla contact boys. It was in this place where the Moalong and Ubujan ambushcades plans were hatched and decided. Bohol Directory / Ambush in Bohol
June 14, 2007, 04:13:46 PM
In Rizalino Israel's "Captain Francisco Salazar Has Fallen", a biography of Vicente T. Cubero, he told the story of a brave Surigao-born Boholano who used the name Francisco Salazar as his war name. He was a warrior in the true sense of the word for the author. Israel said that this man believed that one's life must be sacrificed for God and country if man's soul is to be saved from eternal damnation.

However, on the other hand, Cubero was known to have possessed a talisman in the form of a libretto, according to Israel. Many claimed that Salazar became invulnerable to bullets and other weapons after uttering words from the strange tiny book.

During a meeting of Genaro Visarra, by then a congressman in the first district, and Ismael Ingenerio, then lieutenant who already organized a guerilla unit with temporary headquarters at Maitum, Balilihan, they assigned Francisco Salazar to conduct active combat operations against the Japanese soldiers.

The Ambush at Moalong - In Israel's book, it was on September 25, 1942 when Captain Francisco Salazar, Lt. Vicente Nunag, Jr., Captain Graciano Espinueva, Lt. Sales and Lt. Brigido Senano and their men left Maitum for Moalong, Loon for that ambush operation. It was sunday when they arrived at their destination on September 27, 1942.

Immediately, the guerilleros positioned themselves on an elevated area overlooking the road bend going up northwest at an intersection leading to a Sandigan Island barrio where a bridge also existed. The men were then at vantage point. This was the first ambush and the best against the enemies, said Israel in his book. One of the two truckloads of Japanese soldiers fell into the sea. A hand grenade was thrown at the place where Salazar was standing, yet he was never hurt despite the exploded grenade nearby. In this encounter, four guerilla fighters lost their lives and five soldiers were wounded after a second truckload of Japanese soldiers arrived.

The Planned Abatan Ambush - Believing that the Japanese soldiers would not go beyond Maribojoc or enter any part of the town of Loon, Salazar organized an ambush position in Abatan, Maribojoc near the bridge on October 14, 1942. The site of the ambushcade in Abatan was not different from that of Moalong; the guerilla fighters were atop an elevated flattened area overlooking the Abatan bridge. The failure to make an engagement with the enemy, according to the book, prompted Salazar to push forward and establish an ambushcade in the barrio of Ubujan, Tagbilaran on October 12, 1942.

Ubujan Encounter and the Death of a Hero - Salazar was said to be anxios to have another contact with the enemy. He chose Ubujan because the terrain was flat and the enemies would not think twice of any suspicion that an ambushcade on such a flat area would happen. A few hours before the encounter, there was the ominous sign, when Captain Salazar summoned Lt. Rogers - the nome de guerre of Lt. Juan Relampagos, and in a sad mood instructed the latter to evacuate all documents on classified matters to their rear Command Post in Cantaongon.

The site of the ambushcade in Ubujan Daku was along a road bend between kilometer 4 and at the Tagbilaran North National Road. The ambushers were occupying an area about 100 meters along the North National Road, right side of it facing seaward opposite the place where MB Liner Bus compound used to occupy.

It was a very hot afternoon but the men remained quiet and orderly. Salazar then instructed his men to advance and engaged the enemy in a hand to hand combat at his commnad. His men who believed in his proven power during the previous operations took the instruction without due fear. They were told that unless they would obey his command, they would die so they earnestly heeded his command. They had only about thirty firearms reinforced by the dynamite boys. The main force had only bolos with them. It has been said by old-folks-knowers that only a female could neutralize the power of a talisman. It had been coincidentally proven true in the case of Francisco Salazar because before the fight happened, a woman crossed the firing line, in the person of a certain Maria, who, together with a lad  pretended to be looking for a medicine man to cure her ailment but in reality was a Japanese spy. After the incident, three truckloads of Japanese soldiers in fully armed gear arrived. At the end, fourteen guerrilla fighters fell and eighty nine Japanese soldiers lost their lives in that encounter. Francisco Salazar died from the bullets of the Japanese soldiers and his charmed exploits ended too. (compiled by JHAD Computer Service)

It’s simple, your brain is at the center of everything you do, all you feel and think, and every nuance of how you relate to people. It’s both the supercomputer that runs your complex life and the tender organ that houses your soul. So it is very important to focus on keeping your brain in shape.

By regularly engaging in the right activities, you can increase your memory, improve your problem-solving skills and boost your creativity. Here are some extra tips on how to keep your brain in top nick.

1. Just stop.

Take 20-30 minutes out of your day to think about nothing. But don’t sleep â€" you’ve got to meditate. Sit still, reduce sensory input, and try to focus your mind on something like a calm scene or a color (to begin with thinking about something rather than trying to think of ‘nothing’ is easier). A study at the University of Kentucky revealed that subjects who took a late-afternoon test after meditating for 30 minutes had better scores than those who napped for the same time.

2. Hit the streets.

Lace up your running shoes and get moving. A study from the University of Illinois, US, revealed that aerobic exercise actually increases brain volume. They put two groups through different regimens - one did aerobic training three times weekly for one hour; the other group did just stretching and toning exercise. The aerobics group had increased their brain volume and white matter, which forms the connections between neurons.

3. Mix it up.

Exercise has long been hailed as an aid to brain-power longevity. But to ensure you’re not leaving the gas on in your eighties, vary your workout routines now. Try changing things up on a regular basis and you’ll stimulate your brain more because you’re not using the same pathway over and over again.

4. Read a book.

Choose from classic literature, science fiction or personal development books and give your brain a boost. Pick up a novel before your next flight or vacation. On top of the cerebral benefits, the escapism that comes from reading can be very relaxing. Reading helps you exercise your cognitive skills and increase your vocabulary. Do it regularly and you’ll be amazed at the information you absorb, which will make you a more interesting conversationalist.

5. One-cup-manship.

Swilling coffee could be the perfect accompaniment to the cryptic crossword. Austrian researchers measuring brain activity found short-term memory and concentration improved after consuming 100mg of caffeine - equal to an Americano. But after 40 minutes those guinea pigs were back to the dumbness levels of a twice-a-day Deal Or No Deal viewer.

6. Engage in a debate.

A lively discussion can be invigorating. As long as you avoid letting it digress into an argument, you can have a lot of fun debating the pros and cons of an issue with a friend or colleague. Playing with your brain stimulates blood flow and strengthens the connections (synapses) between nerve cells in the brain. You’ll practice your quick thinking skills, logic and creativity. And developing convincing theories on the spot will help you in your career and in your personal relationships.

7. Grab the Brainbox 360 controller.

Believe it or not, playing certain video games can actually be good for your health. You’ll develop stronger visual skills and make decisions 85% faster than non-gamers, say experts from the University of Rochester, New York. Gamers can read the newspaper, recognize a scene or pick out facial features faster in between fragging killer aliens.

8. Subscribe to a daily newsletter.

Make the most out of your web surfing. Whether it’s a “word of the day,” “quote of the day” or “this day in history” newsletter, receiving new information each day will add data to the hard drive in your head. The mental stimulation will increase your comprehension skills. The additional knowledge will also make you sound more worldly and intelligent.

9. Curry favours.

Tuck into a Ruby Murray tonight to clear the mental cobwebs. Scientists from University of California discovered that curcumin â€" a yellow-coloured compound found in the curry spice turmeric can slow the onset of memory loss. Small doses of curry could also help protect the brain against Alzheimer’s disease - at least that’s the effect in rats. Curries with a yellow tinge will have the highest curcumin count.

10. Grab a cue and play pool.

Rack ‘em up, grab a cue and concentrate on your strategy. Billiard players must focus on the immediate, blocking out distractions as they plan their next moves. Strategic planning increases mental clarity. Concentrating on the immediate helps keep your mind sharp. Furthermore, this game of angles demands that players think in terms of physics, something most of us rarely do in our everyday lives. And it’s a brilliant way to pass the time.

11. Learn an instrument.

A Stanford University research has found for the first time that musical training improves how the brain processes the spoken word. So pull out your old guitar, sign up for piano lessons, or rent a trumpet or a clarinet. Learning how to make music will stimulate your creativity. Reading music provides mental stimulation. Playing an instrument requires powers of recall as well as concentration to maintain tune and tempo.

12. Being boron.

Fat-busting snacks have the added benefit of enhancing your little grey cells. British Nutrition Foundation reports show low-fat dried fruits such as dates are a good source of brain-boosting boron. Get 200g of the fruit down you a day and you’re likely to score higher in motor skills than your raisin-less colleagues.

13. Fresh air golf playing.

Escape to the links and spend a few hours in the fresh air counting birdies, bogeys and mulligans. Just play! It is good for your spirit and good for your brain. Golf is a social sport and a great way to network and relax at the same time. Golfers get mental stimulation using their decision-making skills as they plan stroke strategies. As the sport involves the control of repetitive movements, it instills mind-body discipline.

14. Register, read, and post as many topics in Tubag Bohol as you want.

    Seek advice from the Trio.

15. Build a miniature model.

Remember the fun you had as a kid making model airplanes and cars? Recreate that by building a miniature model, it is a great way to activate your brain and keep it in good working condition. Following all those written instructions sharpens your powers of concentration. Focusing on the task at hand will also be very relaxing.

Remember to keep your mental faculties in tip-top shape by giving yourself plenty of opportunities for mental stimulation; by keeping your mind active you’ll reap great brain-boosting benefits . (ririanproject.com)

MANILA, Philippines (AP) - The Philippine government said Thursday it was surprised by the execution of a Filipino in Saudi Arabia, although it admitted that efforts to save his life through a settlement with the victim's family had failed.

Authorities said Reynaldo Cortez, 41, was beheaded in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday. The Saudi Interior Ministry
said he was convicted of fatally stabbing a Pakistani man in the capital, Riyadh, during a conflict that erupted between them.

"We were surprised over the situation. It was only now that we learned of the execution," said Eduardo Ermita, the Cabinet's most senior member.

Cortez, a welder who left behind a wife and six children in the Philippines, was convicted in 2003 and sentenced to death two years later, according to the Philippine Foreign Affairs Department.

During the trial, he said he killed the Pakistani taxi driver to defend himself from rape, the department said.

Since then, the government had tried unsuccessfully to negotiate a settlement with the victim's family that would spare Cortez's life, Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Esteban Conejos said.

He said the government had sent negotiating teams to Pakistan to ask relatives to accept «blood money,» but they refused. The practice of accepting payments in return for the pardon of a convicted criminal is common in the Muslim world.

He said 13 other Filipinos are on death row in the kingdom, out of a total of 34 worldwide.

More than 8 million Filipinos work abroad. Last year, they sent home a record US$12.8 billion (¤9.5 billion), fueling the local economy. (pr-inside.com)

Deployment of Filipino domestic helpers to the Middle East dropped by 9 to 10 percent in the first five months of 2007, but Labor Secretary Arturo Brion refused to attribute the decline to the government’s policy doubling the minimum salary for household service workers to $400 beginning December 15, 2006.

Brion told newsmen in an interview that the demand for HSWs has gone down while job orders for skilled workers and professionals like nurses, engineers and teachers have increased.

The drop in the deployment of domestic helpers did not seem to bother the labor chief at all. “What is most important is that the deployment of our professionals and skilled workers is going up," he stressed.

He noted that between January and May, professionals such as nurses, engineers, teachers and other skilled workers comprise the biggest bulk of deployment while domestic workers had fallen to third place.

“Our HSW are now in No.3 and leading in the deployment is the professionals and skilled workers," Brion said.

Labor attaché Romeo Young earlier reported that the Philippine Overseas Labor Office in Oman has verified at least 25 job orders in the first three months of the year, representing a significant increase from 18 job orders during the same period in 2006.

He said job orders in Oman for Filipino workers have increased and labor officials noted a shift from domestic helpers to services and technical workers.

The job orders would benefit at least 4, 234 Filipino workers, according to POEA Administrator Rosalinda Baldoz.

She said the shift is a positive sign that the reform package for Filipino household workers implemented since December 2006 has become effective in improving the quality of Filipino manpower required by foreign employers.

The labor attaché reported that job requests for household workers decreased to a low of 15 percent of the total job orders during the first quarter, from 60 percent in January to March 2006.

Baldoz noted that 52 percent of the demand was on service industry workers such as sales persons, waiters and waitresses, beauticians, building workers; and 16 percent from the engineering and construction industry sector.

She said she anticipates the shift in the quality of manpower demand in the Middle East, not only because of the implementation of the reform package for Filipino household service workers but also of the development of the tourism, oil and industry sectors in the region.

Another labor official, who did not want to be named, attributed the drop in the deployment of domestic helpers partly to the salary adjustment. He said many employers in the Middle East opted to extend the contract of their Filipino household service worker instead of giving her a plane ticket to go back to the Philippines.

The official said this was a way to avoid hiring back the same worker at the higher monthly salary of $400.

“Sa mga domestic helpers na nag-expire na ang mga kontrata hindi na sila umuuwi para mag-renew kasi ang ginagawa doon ngayon sa Middle East ng mga employers nila instead of buying them plane tickets ibinibigay na lang ito sa domestic workers to extend their contracts," the official said.

Other Middle Eastern employers hired domestic helpers from India and other Asian countries that offered lower salary for their workers.

Administrator Marianito Roque of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA)explained in a separate interview that only the new contracts processed by the POEA are covered by the US$400 minimum salary for HSW.

Asked if it is likely that employers are really extending the contracts of their workers without the approval from the Philippine government, Roque said, “It’s possible".

Earlier, recruiters from the GCC or the Cooperation Council of the Arab States in the Gulf had threatened to recommend a ban to Filipino domestic helpers until the Philippine government revises the policy mandating the $400 monthly salary and, at the same time, imposing a $13 penalty on foreign employers who would not comply with the contract provisions, such as delayed payment or underpayment of agreed salaries.

Members of the GCC are Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman.

In Bahrain, the demand for skilled Filipino workers has also posted a steady increase.

Philippine Ambassador Eduardo Maglaya noted a 17.7 percent increase in the number of Filipinos either hired or rehired in 2006, or from 9, 968 in 2006 to 11,736 in 2006.

"Filipinos have found a niche in Bahrain's labor market - which is in the service industry - and we expect more workers, particularly professionals, to come. There is also a need for middle and upper management level workers in the IT and banking industries, said Philippine Ambassador Eduardo Maglaya.

He also noted the signing of the memorandum of understanding between the Philippines and Bahrain in April this year, which will pave the way for Filipino nurses and doctors to go to Bahrain, while Bahraini health workers would come to the Philippines as part of the exchange program."

Maglaya said that the continued growing demand for workers from the Philippines represented the strong preference shown by Bahraini companies to Filipinos.

Since the $400 monthly salary rate took effect in January, Maglaya said the embassy has already processed more than 100 contracts for Filipino domestic workers.

"The Philippine government imposed this rule for a good reason and we only hope that others would follow suit. As for skilled Filipino workers, three of the biggest recruiters of Filipinos in Bahrain actually do not need to go to recruiting agencies - most of these giant companies send their own officials to the Philippines to hire workers," Maglaya said.

About 30,000 of the estimated 40,000 Filipinos in Bahrain are workers, 5,000 are dependents and another 5,000 were classified as undocumented workers. - GMANews.TV

Some 88,408 Filipinos are working in Taiwan as of April mostly as factory workers and caretakers/nursing aides, according to statistics released by the Council of Labor Affairs.

The statistics indicate that 58,756 Filipinos are working in factories while 26,553 are working as caretakers or nursing aides.

Manila Economic & Cultural Office Labor Representative Reynaldo C. Gopez said that more Filipinos workers are taking part in the manufacturing of electronics such as computer chips, wafers, LCDs, and television parts.

Gopez said that Taiwan electronics companies are keen to hiring Filipino workers due to their English-speaking ability.

Gopez said that Filipino workers have engaged in work commonly coined as the "3 D's" which stand for difficult, dirty, and dangerous and that the Philippine government is addressing the problem.

The strength of the Filipino workers, can also be found in its nursing aides as many foreign Filipino workers have completed studies in nursing institutions in the Philippines, said Gopez.

Combined with their English ability, Filipino nursing aides have an advantage in working in Taiwan, said Gopez.

"With their facility in English, Filipino nursing aides can read the labels of medicine in Taiwan," said Gopez.

Two main government agencies manage the deployment and the welfare of overseas Filipino workers, the Philippines Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA).

POEA implements policies relating to overseas workers, works on the marketing of the Filipino workers, and deploys the workers abroad.

OWWA handles situations that Filipino workers may face when they are overseas and attends to their needs when they return to the Philippines.

Gopez said that the Philippine government also facilitates the re-integration of overseas Filipino workers into their homeland when they return.

MECO holds lectures for Filipino workers in Taiwan on how to engage in business even while they are still in Taiwan.

While the Philippine government provides disability insurance for overseas Filipino workers, MECO has also opened offices in Taipei, Taichung, and Kaohsiung to serve the workers, Gopez said.

Gopez said that he is satisfied with the Council of Labor Affairs' treatment of Filipino workers.

Gopez cites radio programs for foreign workers, awards to outstanding foreign employees, and a day to commemorate deceased foreign workers as examples of the government's fair treatment of Filipino workers.

Swedish envoy to the Philippines has said that the country’s overseas migration program could not help fuel the Philippine economy in the long run if the government relies only on remittances.

“Relying only on overseas Filipino workers’ remittances is not a sustainable way. The Philippine government must find ways to invest in the knowledge OFWs have gained from other countries to develop the domestic productive capabilities." said Ambassador Annika Markovic to GMA news.TV.

Citing historical parallelism, Ambassador Marcovic said that a hundred years ago, Sweden and the Philippines had much in common. Both were poor rural countries. There were around four million Swedes and Filipinos were about the same.

The Swedish government allowed about one-fourth of the population to immigrate to rebuild their lives out there in foreign lands, especially the US.

“From the Swedish point of view, Swede immigrants [in the early 20th century] managed to restart their lives abroad. Like OFWs(Overseas Filipino Workers) of today, Swedes sent back money home. But many decided to move back. As they did, they brought with them money as well as good ideas from other countries."

The most important thing, she said, is that the Swedes came back with new ideas. They introduced new ways of doing things, new technologies, among others. They started new businesses and in the process helped develop the economy.

To this end, she said, the Philippine government must provide returning OFWs opportunities to develop entrepreneurial skills to help build up the local economy. Expatriates who have decided to move back should be given access to both short-term and long-term loans.

“As an economist, I am convinced that you can’t start a business if it’s going to grow with only your own savings. But it’s difficult for small savings to grow if you cannot go to a bank to borrow money at low interest for a long term," she said.

The ambassador discourages the idea that OFWs be given financial support. She thinks it is unsustainable. Instead, they should develop entrepreneurial skills, which involve taking risks for themselves.

Meanwhile, Jeremaiah M. Opiniano, executive director of the Institute for Migration & Development Issues, wrote in his article published by the OFW Journalism Consortium that the International Monetary Fund confirmed of the weak link between OFW money and investment. (original source: gmanews.tv)

Quotable Quotes / On Prayer
June 14, 2007, 03:24:09 PM
"The great people of the earth today are the people who pray. I do not mean
those who talk about prayer, nor those who say they believe in prayer, nor
yet those who can explain about prayer; but I mean these people who take
time and pray. They have not time. It must be taken from something else.
This something else is important, very important, and pressing, but still
less important and less pressing than prayer. There are people that put
prayer first, and group the other items in life's schedule around and after
prayer." -S. D. Gordon

Weird and Extreme / Man with HIV
June 14, 2007, 02:53:07 PM
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- A man who spent five years in jail for exposing sexual partners to HIV was sentenced to life in prison for knowingly exposing another woman to the virus.

Sean L. Sykes, 33, was sentenced Tuesday. He was found guilty in May of having unprotected sex with a St. Joseph woman without telling her he was HIV-positive. Testimony at his trial -- which was closed to the public to protect witnesses -- indicated that he had exposed at least eight women to HIV. At least three have tested positive.

"I think it's fairly clear he is a very dangerous individual," Buchanan County Prosecutor Dwight Scroggins said after the sentencing. "If he is not in prison, he would likely continue to spread HIV."

Sykes was convicted in 1997 of knowingly exposing someone to HIV. He was given the maximum sentence of 10 years, but was paroled in 2003.

Scroggins said Sykes has had "numerous" other unknown sexual contacts since he first tested positive 16 years ago.

"It's not an immediate death sentence," said assistant prosecutor Kathleen Fisher, "but that's what he's done to these people, his victims."

A 29-year-old woman who contracted HIV in the mid-1990s after having sex with Sykes testified at the sentencing hearing that her life had been destroyed by the virus.

The mother of two children -- neither of whom has tested positive for the disease -- said doctors have given her about two years to live.

"My family has left me -- they're scared of me," she said. "When I found out that Sean was on trial again for this, it drove me crazy. The main question is why? Why is he doing this?"

Prosecutors said Sykes began having a sexual relationship with a St. Joseph woman in 2004, never telling her that he had HIV.

Sykes contended at his trial that the woman knew he was HIV-positive. He apologized Tuesday for his behavior.

"I will admit my behavior in the early '90s, and up until my first conviction, was not appropriate," he said. "Even though (the St. Joseph woman) was aware of my status, I should have seen nothing good would come as far as a sexual relationship." (newsday.com)

How To Tips / 11 Great Ways To Start Your Day
June 14, 2007, 12:37:32 PM
“Be pleasant until ten o’clock in the morning and the rest of the day will take care of itself.” - Elbert Hubbard

Enjoy Your MorningsMornings… ugh… is there actually anyone who enjoys them? You may have heard that your mum’s friend’s neighbor’s sister is said to be a morning person, but do you actually know any of these mythical beasts in the flesh?

Some days it’s just really hard to get out of bed. There are the times when your head feels like lead and you just want to pull the covers over it and hide away.

But the way you spend your morning can add a certain flavor to the rest of your day. So, if the sound of the alarm clock is akin to fingernails on the blackboard then follow these simple steps. You’ll find your day gets off to a much better start so you don’t spend most of the morning battling through a fog.

Awaken Your Body

STEP 1: Wake up at the same time. You’ll be amazed at how much easier it is to face the morning if your body automatically wakes itself up. If you’re alarm clock dependent then you need to make sure you’re getting enough sleep. Get into a routine of going to bed and waking up at the same time - your body will thank you for it! Also try setting your stereo as an alarm you can lull yourself awake with your favorite tunes.

STEP 2: Take a shower. Most of you probably already do this, but if you normally shower at night consider a switch to the am. That blast of water is sure to wake you up, but don’t up the temperature too high or it’ll put you back to sleep!

STEP 3: Put on some music. Music therapy has been shown to reduce stress and have a positive effect on health. But you don’t need a therapist to enjoy some of the benefits music has to offer. Listening to music as you get ready and start your day will create positive energy and a soothing sense of peace (or a sense of fun, if you play party music). Music can compliment other healthy lifestyle habits, adding a sense of peace to a yoga workout, putting a spring in your step on a morning walk, or stimulating your mind as you write in your journal.

STEP 4: Exercise. I know that when you’re trying to open your eyes exercise is probably the furthest thing from your mind, but if you get into the habit of exercising first thing you’ll be amazed at how alert you will feel, not just for the morning but the whole day. You don’t need to become a gym junkie either, drag your boy or flatmate out of bed and head out for a quick jog. If that’s too much for you then consider doing STEP 5.

STEP 5: Stretch. A simple five minute, full-body stretch will give you a natural jumpstart, gently raising your heart rate so that your body feels awake and ready to handle the day’s challenges. In addition, unlike coffee, stretching improves the strength and flexibility of your muscles so that you’ll be more energetic hours, days, and even months down the road. Start by tensing and relaxing the muscles in your feet, then gently rotate each ankle, circling three or four times clockwise and then counter-clockwise to explore your full range of motion. Slowly work your way all the up from your feet to the top of your head, tensing each muscle group for a count of five and then releasing it, and giving every joint a few soft rotations. This should take you about five to seven minutes. When you’re done your whole body will be humming with endorphins, the naturally mood-elevating hormones that your system uses to reward itself for exercising, so you’ll feel great as you head into the next part of your morning routine!

Journaling For Your Mind

STEP 6: Journaling. Now that you’re body is ready to face any challenges your day throws at you, it’s time to rev up your brain. Recent scientific research has shown that writing on a regular increases happiness, relaxation and feelings of positivity, so try making this fun and easy practice a part of your morning routine.

Here are a few examples of the kinds of journaling topics that might make a great addition to your morning routine. Try writing about one of your favorite moments of achievement, recalling as many details as possible. Be vivid not only about how good it felt to reach a goal, but note the sounds, sights, even the smells of that moment! This kind of intense recall of a triumph will help you remember that success is in your grasp. You can also write about things that don’t make you feel successful at all. If there’s an issue in your life that you’re upset about or is bothering you, try writing about it. Get yourself to write down any positive aspects about it: if you can discover something you’ve learned in the struggle, you’ll feel more upbeat and hopeful about finding a solution to your problem.

Of course, these are just the tip of the iceberg for journaling topics: when it comes to what to write about, the sky’s the limit. Taking just ten or fifteen minutes to write about anything in the morning will help you wake up your brain by pumping it full of upbeat energy, so just have fun with it!

Fuel For Energy

STEP 7: Eat a balanced breakfast. I can’t say this enough, having a nice light breakfast in the morning is the best way to increase energy levels and hasten the body and it’s burning of fat cells. Instead of focusing on toast and jam, why not try the healthier option of grapes and plain acidophilus yoghurt. Grapes have amazing antioxidant properties and the live bacteria (don’t freak out â€" it’s a good thing) in the yoghurt supports the digestive system.

STEP 8: Drink green tea or some coffee. Sipping a warm cup of tea is a soothing activity that will help you prepare for the day ahead and feel nurtured. Green tea is loaded with antioxidants, so it’s a delicious and healthy lifestyle choice. Now about coffee, ok, so you’re not supposed to be dependent on caffeine to get you through the morning, but never have I read that a cup a day is bad for you! If you’re having a bad morning, then that magic mug of java may just give your brain that extra kick it needs.

STEP 9: Try to drink 2 glasses of water before you leave in the morning. During the day, if you can, try to drink a few bottles of water, and at the end of the day drink another 2-4 glasses with dinner, etc. This may seem like a lot at first, but your body actually does need 8-10 glasses of water to stay correctly hydrated. You may have to use the restroom more than usual when you first start. This is only temporary! As your body gets used to having all the water it needs, it will absorb into your system and your restroom visits will return to normal.

Enjoy Your Mornings

STEP 10: Think of it as extra social time. Embrace the period before you start work as extra time you have to yourself so don’t waste it staying in bed to the last possible minute! Meet up with your best friend for breakfast at a local cafe, sit at the dining room table and enjoy breakfast with your partner or read a chapter or two of your book.

STEP 11: Take a different route to work/uni/school. A change is as good as a holiday and even a small change like taking a different route can make you feel refreshed. By going an alternative way than your normal route you take away some of the monotony you associate with the journey. Even better, try a different mode of transport whether it be bus, walking, cycling or catching a ride with someone else.

Everyone has a morning routine, and whether it’s a leisurely soak in the tub or a frenzied dash for the bus, the way you spend your first half hour sets the tone for the rest of the day. With that in mind, get things started right with this simple morning routine. Try one or several steps, and experiment until you find what suits you.

So, Get Your Morning Off To a Good Start!

Inspiration & Hope / A Little Concern
June 14, 2007, 12:25:42 PM
from Our Daily Bread devotional

I will never leave you nor forsake you. â€"Hebrews 13:5

I know I’m not supposed to worry, but I’m a little concerned about something. Perhaps it’s because of a new situation in our family. As I look around, I can’t help but have a bit of anxiety. You see, my wife and I recently found out that we were going to be grandparents. This led me to think about the kind of world our grandchild will grow up in.

When he or she graduates from high school, it will be 2024. Will college cost $100,000 a year by then? If there’s any oil left, will gas cost $25 a gallon? Will morals and ethics be outmoded? And will the church still be making an impact?

The future can be a scary place. The unknown can be overwhelming, especially when the known has so many struggles. That’s why we need to trust in what God has promised.

No matter what situation our grandchildren will face, they can depend on God’s promise of helpâ€"regardless of what trouble the world will be in. God said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Heb. 13:5). And Jesus said, “I am with you always, even to the end of the age” (Matt. 28:20).

Those are great promises to depend on when we start to worry about the future, whether it’s ours or the next generation’s. â€"Dave Branon

Concern for future cares and problems
Will only bring us pain and sorrow;
The Lord has told us not to worry
About the troubles of tomorrow.
â€"Sper

We may not know what the future holds, but we can trust the One who holds the future.

Inspiration & Hope / Call Of The Chickadees
June 14, 2007, 12:18:30 PM
Our Daily Bread

Do not quench the Spirit. â€"1 Thessalonians 5:19

The black-capped chickadee has a surprising level of complexity in the noises it makes for alarm calls. Researchers found that chickadees use a high-frequency call to warn of danger in the air. Depending on the situation, the “chickadee” call can cue other birds about food that is nearby or predators that are perched too close for comfort.

Studies have also found that chickadees don’t sense danger from large predators such as the great horned owl, because they’re not likely to prey on such a petite bird. But smaller owls, which are closer to the size of the chickadee and more of a threat, prompt sentinel chickadees to repeat the alarm sound of their callsâ€"the chickadee’s distinctive “dee” note.

A similar level of awareness might serve us well. In the apostle Paul’s first letter to the Thessalonians, he didn’t just condemn the evils of the world. He also focused his attention on the matters of the heart that can do harm to us with barely a notice. “See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good.” “Do not quench the Spirit.” “Test all things” (1 Thess. 5:15,19,21).

With the Spirit’s help, let’s keep attuned to every caution in the Word about our heart. â€"Mart De Haan

How we need a keen awareness
Of God’s voice that is His Word,
Quiet whispers, gentle nudgings,
So we’ll make Him King and Lord. â€"Anon.

God speaks to those who are willing to listen.

Inspiration & Hope / Get In The Game
June 14, 2007, 12:15:37 PM
To this end I also labor, striving according to His working which works in me mightily. â€"Colossians 1:29

I love going to Chicago’s Wrigley Field for a baseball gameâ€"sitting in the stands, downing a great hot dog, and cheering the Cubs on to victory!

Unfortunately, Christianity has become a lot like professional sports. As a friend of mine has observed, there are nine guys on the baseball field doing all the work and thousands in the stands just watching. And as you probably know, that’s not God’s game plan for His people. He wants us to climb out of the stands, get out on the field, and join the team.

If you are wondering what good you can do on the field, wonder no more. What about your financial resources? Jesus can take your “silver and gold” and use it to accomplish great things for His glory.

But more than just getting out your checkbook, you have gifts you can contribute. God has given each of us spiritual gifts that can help advance His kingdom. Whether it’s teaching, encouraging, serving, showing hospitality, or extending mercy, each ability can yield great dividends. Let’s follow the example of Paul, who tirelessly served on God’s field for the joy of being used by Him (Col. 1:28-29).

Believe me, it’s far more rewarding to be on the field than to sit in the stands. â€"Joe Stowell

Start where you are in serving the Lord,
Claim His sure promise and trust in His Word;
God simply asks you to do what you can,
He’ll use your efforts to further His plan. â€"Anon.

Don’t make a cemetery of your life by burying your talents.
