Science and Research / Re: Comet Ison
July 21, 2013, 02:54:20 PM

Halley's Comet becomes visible to the unaided eye about every 76 years as it nears the sun. Image credit: Lick Observatory

Parts of a comet

The nucleus of a comet is a ball of ice and rocky dust particles that resembles a dirty snowball. The ice consists mainly of frozen water but may include other frozen substances, such as ammonia, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and methane. Scientists believe the nucleus of some comets may be fragile because several comets have split apart for no apparent reason.

As a comet nears the inner solar system, heat from the sun vaporizes some of the ice on the surface of the nucleus, spewing gas and dust particles into space. This gas and dust forms the comet's coma. Radiation from the sun pushes dust particles away from the coma. These particles form a tail called the dust tail. At the same time, the solar wind -- that is, the flow of high-speed electrically charged particles from the sun-converts some of the comet's gases into ions (charged particles). These ions also stream away from the coma, forming an ion tail. Because comet tails are pushed by solar radiation and the solar wind, they always point away from the sun.

Most comets are thought to have a nucleus that measures about 10 miles (16 kilometers) or less across. Some comas can reach diameters of nearly 1 million miles (1.6 million kilometers). Some tails extend to distances of 100 million miles (160 million kilometers).

Astronomers classify comets according to how long they take to orbit the sun. Short-period comets need less than 200 years to complete one orbit, while long-period comets take 200 years or longer.

Astronomers believe that comets are leftover debris from a collection of gas, ice, rocks, and dust that formed the outer planets about 4.6 billion years ago. Some scientists believe that comets originally brought to Earth some of the water and the carbon-based molecules that make up living things.

Comet

A comet (KOM iht) is an icy body that releases gas or dust. Most of the comets that can be seen from Earth travel around the sun in long, oval orbits. A comet consists of a solid nucleus (core) surrounded by a cloudy atmosphere called the coma and one or two tails. Most comets are too small or too faint to be seen without a telescope. Some comets, however, become visible to the unaided eye for several weeks as they pass close to the sun. We can see comets because the gas and dust in their comas and tails reflect sunlight. Also, the gases release energy absorbed from the sun, causing them to glow.

Echo and Narcissus by John William Waterhouse
#20718

Narcissus by Caravaggio depicts Narcissus gazing at his own reflection.
#20719
Narcissus or Narkissos (Greek: ΝάρκισσοÏ,), possibly derived from ναρκη (narke) meaning "sleep, numbness," in Greek mythology was a hunter from the territory of Thespiae in Boeotia who was renowned for his beauty. He was the son of a river god named Cephissus and a nymph named Liriope. He was exceptionally proud, in that he disdained those who loved him. Nemesis saw this and attracted Narcissus to a pool where he saw his own reflection in the water and fell in love with it, not realizing it was merely an image. Unable to leave the beauty of his reflection, Narcissus died. Narcissus is the origin of the term narcissism, a fixation with oneself. (wikipedia)
#20720
Narcissism is considered a personality disorder. The feeling of supreme haughtiness leaves no room for empathy for others. The disorder may stem from deep insecurities despite the person’s outright arrogant and self-confident behavior.

The narcissist may also feel unloved. It isn’t uncommon for a person with a narcissistic personality to use others to obtain what they really want or feel they deserve. Anybody who is around this person will be expected to shower him with adoration and attention. He will also look for constant reaffirmation of his greatness.

#20721
What is Narcissistic Personality?

A narcissist is somebody who is focused on their own wants and needs. A person with a narcissistic personality will use the power they wield over others to get what they want. They are consumed by feelings, which are unwarranted, of utter self-importance. Basically, they are the kings of their castles and feel entitled to every perk and all the riches in the world. The narcissist is convinced their way is the only way and everybody should do as instructed by him or her.

But the law school wasn't finished. Instead of the traditional hood that is given to law graduates, Baylor Law Professor Gerald Powell presented Skeeter with a purple collar and golden dog tag in the shape of a bone.

Amy Jones earned her law degree on Nov. 8 from Baylor Law School. At right is Skeeter, who served as her faithful companion and service dog during Jones' three years of law school.

 As Jones was presented with her law degree, Skeeter, too, also was honored with a diploma bearing the following tribute:

    WHEREAS Skeeter Jones, good and gentle Labrador, attended faithfully with Ms. Amy Jones all prescribed Baylor Law School classes, dog-day in and dog-day out, until completion;

    WHEREAS he showed uncommon bravery in yawning loudly in abject dog-boredom during a certain lecture of Professor Jeremy Counseller, caring but little for the intricacies of removal and remand;

    WHEREAS he successfully begged for donuts from Professor David Guinn, having been unfairly tempted by the hi-jinks of the latter;

    WHEREAS Good Dog Skeeter completed the Practice Court program without being called upon once or reading nary a case, all knowing that a snarl would rebuff any such intrusion;

    WHEREAS he is now an older, wiser and even a bit fatter dog;

    WHEREAS those who survive Baylor Law School are entitled to all barking rights, entitlements and appurtenances thereto;

    THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY DECREED that Baylor University School of Law confers upon Skeeter the Labrador this HONORARY JURIS 'DOG'TOR DEGREE

Baylor Law Commencement Includes Honorary Juris 'Dog'tor' Degree For Grad's Service Dog

Baylor Law Professor Gerald Powell presents Skeeter, faithful companion and service dog to Baylor Law graduate Amy Jones, with an honorary juris "dog"tor degree, as well as a purple collar and golden dog tag in the shape of a bone.

Nov. 11, 2008

Baylor Law School's fall commencement ceremony on Nov. 8 was an exciting and proud day for 16 law graduates, as they received their juris doctor degrees and heard from distinguished Baylor graduate and former FBI director William Sessions. But an additional highlight that has caught the nation's attention was the presentation of an honorary juris "dog"tor degree to "Skeeter," a Labrador retriever and faithful service dog to Baylor Law grad Amy Jones.

Jones, who earned her law degree on Saturday, was paralyzed in 2002 as the result of a skiing accident. The setback did not keep Jones from returning to school, along with Skeeter, to California State University at Chico, where in 2005, she earned her degree in construction management. As she attended three years of classes at Baylor Law School, Jones again was faithfully attended to by Skeeter, who was well-known and well-cared for by Jones' fellow Baylor Law students, faculty and staff.

'I'm going to go shoot up a school full of kids, lol': Teenager JAILED for posting 'joke' threat on Facebook after row with an online gaming partner

    18-year-old made joke after argument with online video game player
    Austin police say they take comments seriously after Sandy Hook

By Daily Mail Reporter

A Texas teenager has been in jail since February after making an offhand comment on Facebook about a video game he had been playing.

Justin Carter was 18 when he and a friend got into an argument with someone over a multiple player online video game, leading the teenager to post a comment he now regrets.

He now faces up to eight years in prison after saying 'I'm going to go shoot up a school full of kids and eat their still beating hearts' only two months after the Sandy Hook school massacre.

UK man gets more than 2 years in jail for making threat to US school on Facebook

July 9, 2013

Reece Elliott from South Shields in northeast England pleaded guilty in April to making malicious comments.

Judge James Goss sentenced 24-year-old Elliott to two years and four months in prison, telling him the "grossly offensive" comments were driven by "no more than self-indulgent nastiness."

Defense lawyer John Wilkinson told the judge at Newcastle Crown Court that Elliott could not explain his behavior, which the defendant called "idiotic, childish and pathetic."

Daniel Bangert

http://www.spiegel.de/
#20774
More Walks in the Future?

Nevertheless, news of the incident spread rapidly via Twitter and blogs, and the local media reported on it as well. "My grandma was angry with me," Bangert says. "She said: 'You have to be careful or you'll get sent to jail.'"

He wasn't sent to jail, of course. But the added interest in his invitation meant that some 70 people gathered on Saturday for the NSA safari in Griesheim -- along with two police cars, one in front and one behind. "Some members of the group tried to get the NSA spies to come out of their building," Bangert wrote on Facebook afterwards. Unfortunately, they didn't see "any real NSA spies." But they had a good time nonetheless -- to the point that many suggested another walk just like it.

So is he planning a repeat? "I didn't say that and I didn't write it anywhere," Bangert replies. The smart aleck.

http://www.spiegel.de/
#20775
Ignoring the Police

The officers, says Bangert, were unimpressed and called him a "smart aleck," before hinting strongly that he should obtain a demonstration permit before he embarked on his outing. They then told Bangert not to post anything about their visit on the web.

Bangert took their first piece of advice, registering his "demonstration" even though, as he says, "it wasn't supposed to be one." But he ignored the police's second suggestion and reported on their visit on his Facebook page. "How much more proof do you need," he wrote. "Everyone says that they aren't affected. But then I invite people for a walk and write obvious nonsense in the invitation and suddenly the federal police show up at my home."

The police spokeswoman sought to play down the incident. The officers from Central Commissariat 10 are responsible for public demonstrations, she said. And the fact that the American Military Police reported the Facebook post isn't surprising either, she said. The police, she noted, usually only learn of publicly announced Facebook parties when they are notified by those affected.
#20776
How, though, did the police get wind of Bangert's planned "nature" walk? A spokeswoman for the police in nearby Darmstadt told SPIEGEL ONLINE that the US Military Police had found the Facebook post and passed it along to German officials. The Military Police are responsible for security within the Dagger Complex, but outside the fence, it is the Germans who are in charge.

Not long later, Bangert got another call asking him to report to Central Commissariat 10 of the German federal police. They too then sent an officer to his home. "The wanted to know if I had connections with (anarchist groups) or other violent people," Bangert says. He told the officers that he didn't, repeating over and over that he "just wanted to go for a walk."
#20777
'I Couldn't Believe It'

Bangert's doorbell rang at almost the exact same time. The police on the telephone told him to talk with the officers outside of his door. Bangert quickly put on a T-shirt -- which had a picture of NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden on it along with the words "Team Edward" -- and answered the door. His neighbor was outside too so as not to miss the fun.

The police wanted to know more about what exactly Bangert had in mind. "I couldn't believe it. I thought: What? They are coming for such nonsense?"

Bangert says he answered all of the questions truthfully, saying that, yes, his intention was that of heading out to watch the spies. "The officers did smirk a bit," he notes.

He described the outing as though it were a nature walk. He wrote on Facebook that its purpose was to undertake "joint research into the threatened habitat of NSA spies." He added: "If we are really lucky, we might actually see a real NSA spy with our own eyes." He suggested that those interested in coming should bring along their cameras and "flowers of all kinds to improve the appearance of the NSA spies' habitat."

Perhaps not surprisingly, not many of his friends showed much interest in the venture. But the authorities did. Just four days after he posted the invitation, his mobile phone rang at 7:17 a.m. It was the police calling to talk about his Facebook post.

NSA Joke: US Military Intervene over Facebook Event

By Judith Horchert
SPIEGEL ONLINE International

Daniel Bangert just wanted to go for a walk.

As a joke, a German man recently invited some friends for a walk around a top secret NSA facility. But the Facebook invitation soon had German federal police knocking at his door. They had been alerted by the American authorities.

Normally, Daniel Bangert's Facebook posts tend to be of the serious variety. The 28-year-old includes news items and other bits of interest he encounters throughout the day. "I rarely post funny pictures," he says.

Recently, though, he decided to liven up his page with something a bit more amusing -- and decided to focus on the scandal surrounding the vast Internet surveillance perpetrated by the US intelligence service NSA. He invited his friends on an excursion to the top secret US facility known as the Dagger Complex in Griesheim, where Bangert is from.

if that post is about you, and that's a big "if" there, consider the following:

1.  why not think of "box" instead of "idiot"?

2.  you can very well afford the same dark glasses.

3.  cheer up.  that guy in the poster may look like you.

wow!  one of the real heroes we have the privilege of knowing in our lifetime.

years ago, my connecting flight from amsterdam to the philippines didn't wait for the delayed flight from frankfurt to amsterdam, where i was on.  desperate (i didn't know where to go; it meant staying overnight in amsterdam), i fretted and complained at the klm girl at the airport.

"please try to enjoy amsterdam, ma'am", she said.  "interesting people come here.  nelson mandela just arrived today."

whew!  she was right.  just the thought that nelson mandela was in the same place where i was was already something.  i calmed down.

of course, i didn't get to meet nelson mandela.

Tibetan Mastiff - they can grow up to 32 inches.

The Tibetan Mastiff is considered a primitive breed. It typically retains the hardiness which would be required for it to survive in Tibet and the high-altitude Himalayan range, including the northern part of Nepal, India and Bhutan.

i hope to see this one day.  i've already seen an alaskan husky (out-of-this-world handsome).  this is my next ambition.  i just want to see.  i don't really want to have dogs of some breed.  the homeless street dog is still my preference.  but seeing strange dogs is enough for me.

This year, Kimura's exhibition uses 5,000 goldfish displayed in 17 installations made of 70 aquariums.

The tanks are embellished with light displays and futuristic designs but also retain traditional symbols of Japanese culture such as kimonos, folding screens and lanterns.

The exhibition turns into a music lounge in the evenings (called Night Aquarium) and on the weekends.

Fantastical fishy installations at Tokyo show

By Frances Cha, CNN
July 17, 2013

(CNN) -- Of all the bizarre art niches out there, "goldfish aquarium art" must rank fairly high.

Yet the artist Hidetomo Kimura has built an entire career as an "art aquarist," and his weird and wonderful live installations are now on display again at an exhibition, "Edo -- the coolness of goldfish" (link in Japanese), at the Nihonbashi Mitsui Hall, in Tokyo.

First held in 2011 to mark the centenary of the Nihonbashi Bridge, where the hall is located, the unusual exhibit proved so popular it has been held each year since.

'Giyamanrium'
This year marks the third Art Aquarium. Last year, 200,000 people visited the exhibit over 39 days.

'Kingyo Collection'
The exhibition's subtitle -- "Edo: the coolness of goldfish" -- alludes to a Japanese custom of a century or so ago, when Tokyo was still called Edo. In summer, the city's inhabitants would spend time watching goldfish in ponds, hoping that would make them feel cooler.

'Kimonorium'
Produced by Japanese "art aquarist" Hidetomo Kimura, the live installations retain traditional elements of Japanese culture such as the kimono.
