We are alive in earth for what? 60-70-80 years? Then what? Dust to dust, ashes to ashes. Ang lawas mo balik sa soil. Pero atong spirit...mo balik sa Ginoo.

Emperors, Kings, Presidents, all men with majesty all will die. They share the same fate as all of us commoners. Kita tanan are subject to the Law of Mortality.

Ikaw unsa man imo itubag? I'm sure (pretty much) dili jud moingon ang Ginoo, "Lorenzo, ingna si Bugsay o Hubag nga e denounce ila bahandi to gain perfection." But rather, "Lorenz, how 'bout renoucning all you have and then follow me? Sugot ka?"  ;D

I would renounce all the little accomplishments for sure. If I was standing in front of Jesus Christ, to see His face with my own eyes...to hear His voice with my own ears. It would be akin to the beautific vision. Mo ingon ko , "Oo Ginoo, gusto ko mo uban nimo..."

Eternal Life in Heaven is greater than this mortal life in earth, which is perishable.

Life in Heaven is imperishable. Mortal life is perishable.

Contemplation , indeed, Fr. Roel. Now you have me thinking about it. One thing is sure...one has to discern fully when assessing such things. As you said to me before, "go in a quiet room, and ask the Holy Spirit the meaning and answers to his questions."

One thing that I have been thinking about lately was the Crucifix. The contiguous nature of death , suffering, to life. Our Lord, the Creator of All Things, endured the cruelest way to die, cruel abuse, cruel words, condemnation (by his own chosen people, ISRAEL), so that we might Live.

God came down from Heaven, became man, suffered death, to satiate the Law and to free us from the power of Sin and Death. So that we might Live....

Imagine if we see Jesus Christ on the streets. Per se we see the Lord in the street. And say to Him, "Lord, Lord, pasayloa ako sa ahong mga sala, what can I do for you to forgive me?"

Ug mo ingon ang Ginoong Hesus Kristo nato, "Pag ampo, anak. Ug follow nako. Reject all that you have in this world and follow me lang. Ibuhi ang imong tanan nga possessions sa kalibotan og follow-ha ko. Ug pa tinuod jud ka, anak, maka adto jyud ka sa Langit"

Friends, what would you do? How would you react? Would you reject the Lord's answer as did the Jewish man who asked Him how to attain perfection......

Truly, Fr. Roel.

One thing that I really find quite interesting is that there is a clear and delineating difference in how the World defines "perfect" and how God (Jesus Christ) defines "perfect/ perfection".

We live in a world that places importance on performance. Right? From elementary school, to high school, to college, to medical school, and to graduate school, I was always taken how my teachers, instructors, professors, medical preceptor, medical directors always encouraged us to perform "perfectly". They view perfection as "100%". Top knotch score.

I would always remember my Professor of Medical Microbiology saying to my class, "Anyone who manages to get a Perfect score in my class will receive my respect!" What he referred to as a 'perfect' score was a 100%. And to be honest with you , managing to get a 90 on any of his exams was truly a feat for any student. (His exams were incredibly hard, and incredibly long, I will admit this-- I never got an A on his exams, but only B's). There was a student , a good friend of mine, who did manage to get a 94% on her final examination. It was truly a feat. However he said to her, "Close but no cigar! Still not perfect!"

Or how about when we think of our financial scores, financial ratios, etc. A score of 100% (700+) is akin to 'perfection'. It is rather amazing that how the world views 'perfect' is almost contrary to what Jesus views in perfection.

In this world we are encouraged by society and the forces in society to achieve economic feats, to gain educational knowledge etc. The more money you make, the better. The higher your status in society, the better.

But Jesus Christ is contrary to this.

The Jewish man asked Jesus Christ, "Lord, how can I reach perfection? What must I do to become perfect?"

Jesus answers him, " If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."

Giving all one's possessions that one worked hard for in the world, and to reject a life that one worked hard to reach in the world --and follow JESUS.

For me, I see that perfection in how the world views the word is different to how Jesus views it.

TRUE PERFECTION is to be free from  worldly slavery to money, idols, social events, etc. And to become a follower of Jesus Christ.

So, I guess the saying is true: "Perfection in Simplicity. Perfection in being Poor Financially , but Rich in the Christian Faith"

Blessings and Peace to All!

Backbiting

by: Wayne Blank

The term "backbiting" refers to a form of slander that is made against someone, not to their face, but "behind their back." It's most often used for one of two reasons; the accuser lacks the moral courage (there will be no cowards in the Kingdom of God i.e. "But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone," Revelation 21:8) to make their accusation directly to the one that they have found fault, or because their accusation is a lie that would be readily proved so by the accused person.

True Christians are not "backbiters" because true Christians are not liars ("Thou shalt not bear false witness"), and if they ever rightfully have a problem with a fellow Christian, Jesus Christ instructed how it was to be dealt with in an open and honest way:

"Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother. But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as a heathen man and a publican." (Matthew 18:15-17)

The apostle Paul encountered and warned against the same thing as David did. Paul used the Greek word, pronounced kat-al-al-os, which means a defamer, which is here translated as "backbitings":

"For I fear, lest, when I come, I shall not find you such as I would, and that I shall be found unto you such as ye would not: lest there be debates, envyings, wraths, strifes, backbitings, whisperings, swellings, tumults" (2 Corinthians 12:20 )

Paul warned against "backbitings" in the true Church of God because it causes division and falling away if not repented of. The same Greek word, kat-al-al-os, that is used to describe the backbiting in the verse quote above is also used to refer to one of the bitter fruits of apostasy i.e. "as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind":

"And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them" (Romans 1:28-32)

On backbiting. I have been in an unfortunate situation in the past where one friend was talking about another friend, where one person was spreading false witness against a man whom I regard as a friend. The friend that was receiving the ill treatment did not deserve such treatment.

We all know how much it can be displeasing to the spirit to know that one is being talked about in a negative way. Much more if those who talk ill about us or those whom you love are doing it behind your back. The put a facade of astute kindness, but behind their smiles, is the gnashing of teeth.

I have comforted friends who were the victims of such backbiting. And it truly hurt my heart to hear that all manner of false assumptions and lies were being hurled at them. I myself also have been the victim of backbiting; cruel jokes that were uttered for their own pleasure but at my own expense and the expense of my character. How did I address this matter? Through prayer.

In cases were people say ill things about you--it is better that we not stoop down to their level, rather, if you can--learn to forgive them and to look on. But do address it, civilly as possible.

In the end, it takes true character and spirit to look away at such incessant irritations. When we are irritated and hurt, we should close our eyes and remember that Christ Jesus our Lord was crucified on the cross and suffered the ultimate shame and hurt.

God Bless!

The precordial chest leads (V1-V6) is placed at the level of the 4th intercostal space. V1 is placed on the medial border of the 4th intercostal space at the level of the medial flank of the sternum. The V2 is placed on the left border of the 4th intercostal space. The V3 and V4 precordial chest leads are then placed further left and the V5-V6 are placed to the lateral border of the left chest.

These 6 precordial chest leads allows us to see different angles of the heart.

V1, V2 -- give us the electrical image of the interventricular septum

V3-V4 -- give us the image of the anterior surface of the left ventricle

V5-V6 -- give us the image of the lateral surface of the left ventricle

Psalm 23

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:

He leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul:

he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,

I will fear no evil: for thou art with me;
thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies:

thou anointest my head with oil;
my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life:

and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

Michael Ligalig asked, "Who is Jesus Christ to you?"

Several weeks ago, I found a poem written by Fr. Frank Pavone entitled, "Jesus Christ the King", which I believe answers the question raised.

--

Jesus Christ the King

by: Fr. Frank Pavone

Of every pond and stream that flows,

Of every rock and pebble small,

Of every river and ocean wide,

Out every mountain vast and tall,

Of every moon and star above,

Of every storm and rain and hail,

Of sleet and fog, of ice and smog,

Of summer breeze and winter gale,

Of every island in the sea,

Of every animal that walks,

Or crawls or swims or flies or rests,

Or chirps or barks or howls or squawks,

Of every place by men unknown,

Not yet discovered or explored,

Of every height and every depth,

Of sites beloved and abhorred,

Of every kingdom, empire, state,

Dominion, country, monarchy

Of village small and city great

Of men of power and majesty,

Of house and home and property,

Of kitchen and of living room,

Of bedroom, hallway, stairway long,

Of playground and of working room,

Of every act, desire, and wish,

Longing, passion, weakness, strength,

Of every heart that longs and laughs,

And cries and tries and waits at length,

Of all who suffer and who wait

For justice or for daily bread,

Of all who triumph and are glad,

Of all who middle paths do tread,

Of every woman, man and child,

Of every creature large and small,

Of every sinner, saint and angel,

Jesus Christ is King of all!

Yes He is King; yes, Christ is King!

No start or end and never failing,

His reign engulfs infinity

O'er all existing things prevailing.

Yet men are weak and often question

When many evil things they see.

Christ waits for them to realize

That He is wiser than are we.

He is aware of all that is,

He knows our problems, needs and fears,

His Providence is now at work

And Jesus’ final triumph nears.

Then let us rise in greater faith

To tell the world of His great name,

That when the King returns, we may

For lack of faith not blush with shame. Amen!

Doctors of Depravity

By CHRISTOPHER HUDSON
02 March 2007

After more than 60 years of silence, World War II's most enduring and horrible secret is being nudged into the light of day. One by one the participants, white-haired and mildmannered, line up to tell their dreadful stories before they die.

Akira Makino is a frail widower living near Osaka in Japan. His only unusual habit is to regularly visit an obscure little town in the southern Philippines, where he gives clothes to poor children and has set up war memorials.

Mr Makino was stationed there during the war. What he never told anybody, including his wife, was that during the four months before Japan's defeat in March 1945, he dissected ten Filipino prisoners of war, including two teenage girls. He cut out their livers, kidneys and wombs while they were still alive. Only when he cut open their hearts did they finally perish.

These barbaric acts were, he said this week, "educational", to improve his knowledge of anatomy. "We removed some of the organs and amputated legs and arms. Two of the victims were young women, 18 or 19 years old. I hesitate to say it but we opened up their wombs to show the younger soldiers. They knew very little about women - it was sex education."

Why did he do it? "It was the order of the emperor, and the emperor was a god. I had no choice. If I had disobeyed I would have been killed." But the vivisections were also a revenge on the "enemy" - Filipino tribespeople whom the Japanese suspected of spying for the Americans.

Disgusting..

-Isaiah 55:10-11

Thus says the LORD:
Just as from the heavens
the rain and snow come down
and do not return there
till they have watered the earth,
making it fertile and fruitful,
giving seed to the one who sows
and bread to the one who eats,
so shall my word be
that goes forth from my mouth;
my word shall not return to me void,
but shall do my will,
achieving the end for which I sent it.

Poems and Poets / An Old Man's Winter Night
July 11, 2011, 10:07:54 AM
by: Robert Frost

All out of doors looked darkly in at him
Through the thin frost, almost in separate stars,
That gathers on the pane in empty rooms.
What kept his eyes from giving back the gaze
Was the lamp tilted near them in his hand.
What kept him from remembering what it was
That brought him to that creaking room was age.
He stood with barrels round him -- at a loss.
And having scared the cellar under him
In clomping there, he scared it once again
In clomping off; -- and scared the outer night,
Which has its sounds, familiar, like the roar
Of trees and crack of branches, common things,
But nothing so like beating on a box.
A light he was to no one but himself
Where now he sat, concerned with he knew what,
A quiet light, and then not even that.
He consigned to the moon, such as she was,
So late-arising, to the broken moon
As better than the sun in any case
For such a charge, his snow upon the roof,
His icicles along the wall to keep;
And slept. The log that shifted with a jolt
Once in the stove, disturbed him and he shifted,
And eased his heavy breathing, but still slept.
One aged man -- one man -- can't keep a house,
A farm, a countryside, or if he can,
It's thus he does it of a winter night.

Attended a faculty meeting this week at the hospital, then drove to Northwestern Univ. last night to lecture on Advanced EKG for the new batch of students. I have 25 kids in my Advanced EKG class.

Yesterday was the first day for Advanced EKG. A student of mine, in her late 40's, came up and said to me, "You're our professor? You're too young!"

Ning respond pood ko, "Age is nothing but a number."

Ha, ha, ha. Overall, they are a good batch. It really is very rewarding-- to be able to teach and give back what you know to students.

The good thing about medicine is that one can practice -- and one can also instruct. Both aspects are very rewarding.

If China did not recoil from its territorial tussle with Japan, an economic superpower within its own league, over the Senkaku islands in an East China Sea incident last year, how can we expect it to go soft on us over the Spratly Islands? Japan's arrest of the Chinese fishing boat crew  set off a chain of saber rattling, retributive arrest of Japanese nationals, Chinese government-orchestrated sabotage of economic reciprocity which eventually resulted in Japan releasing the crew and then the captain after a few months.

We do not have the latitude to engage in such brinksmanship. But respond firmly we must. Japan was almost bullied, but when it symbollically held its ground through the arrest, China got the message.

As to the Spratlys, it would be more effective to bring this issue to the regional forum ASEAN, where our concerns resonate closer to home. The issue should be addressed through the law of the sea convention, and not through historical claims.

You are right, Tito Ben. The Philippines must hold its territorial claim , however, we should exhaust all diplomatic options -- per se bringing this issue into the ASEAN forum and to the United Nations.

A military response by the Philippines would be devastating for us, Filipinos, in that it would be used as pretext for an overwhelming Chinese military response. A war with China, in my honest opinion, is a foregone conclusion. But perhaps with the diplomatic support from key ASEAN players and from the United States and other influential nation states might provide enough clout to stave off further Chinese territorial incursion.

One can only remain hopeful.

Diplomatic formality. The Chinese Government is quick to deliver a compromise with the Philippines because of the alarming possibility of American intervention.

This reminds me of the 'calm' before the 1962 Sino-Indian Border War. The Chinese promised Nehru of peace via a state visit by Minister Zhou Enlai. Within months, the Chinese PLA invaded Northern India and forced the Indians to accept Chinese demands over territory.

I would say that the adjective you use to describe yourself is quite accurate.

Btw , just because China does not have a nationalized religion does not necessarily mean they, as a people, lack a moral compass. They still have a moral compass according to their Confucian Culture.
One in which they still, to this day, enforce and abide by.

The Chinese people are one of the most socially conservative in the world. An effect of their cultural dynamic.

China says it has sovereign rights over the entire South China Sea. The reported intrusions have set off anti-China protests.

About a dozen protesters burned two Chinese flags near the U.S. Embassy on Monday. In Vietnam, dozens of people held protests for a fifth straight week in Hanoi on Sunday, waving Vietnamese flags and chanting anti-Chinese slogans.

In the latest reported foreign intrusion into Philippine-claimed waters, an unidentified fighter plane buzzed just 20 feet (six meters) over the tip of an antenna on a boat carrying Filipino fishermen at Dalagang Bukid Shoal near the Spratlys, Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin said Tuesday.

The fishermen, shaken but unharmed by the June 4 incident, immediately left the area, about 130 miles (210 kilometers) off Palawan province's Balabac Island. The fishermen failed to identify the aircraft, Gazmin said.

On Feb. 25, a Chinese naval vessel allegedly fired to scare away Filipino fishermen from Jackson Atoll, also near the Spratlys. Chinese Ambassador to Manila Liu Jianchao denied that Chinese forces fired at the Filipino fishermen.

you are envying people
it, of what you
don't have
and you won't have.

you have this way
from times,
when you tried
to imitate other.

your jealousy,
didn't let you be,
pleased with
successes.

too much time you devoted
for preparing the strategy
fights against
the alleged enemy

now, you are an grumpy old man
and still you are lacking
what your idols had
talent and the God's spark

therefore still you are envying
and you are dealing with the other
people's property
with not one's success

grandfather....
take care of the grandson
maybe, at one time,
will count for you

Talk of the Town / Re: RH Bill Forum in Bohol
July 07, 2011, 12:15:19 AM
if the RH bill passes, then there will be a new open market for pharmaceutical companies to sell 'family planning' contraceptives.

misoprostol, a 'family planning' drug is also an abortion-inducing pill that dilates a woman's uterus and forces the uterus to shed its epithelial lining and thus killing the fetus within. the female patient taking this drug suffers through intense bleeding periods and my have to be hospitalized.

the philippines is a large , lucrative market of some 90 million people. 40 million at least are females. 25-30 million are child-bearing age.

if the RH bill passes, then big money for the pharmaceutical companies.

all for 'money'. disgusting.

*from http://index-china.com/main/people/confucianism.php

Sadly, I do not concur with you. The precept that Confucius reiterates in point #3, " A state, without law-abiding families and trustworthy gentlemen, without knowing the threat of external aggression, will perish," focuses on the need to know one's external environment.

"A state ...without knowing the threat of external aggresion, will perish..."

This relegates the importance of a nation having to defend itself from external aggression. If a state does not know the said threat(s), then it will perish.

The Chinese officials and military brass are now using the Spratlys as pretext to this point. In their view, I'm surmising, if they do not defend their claims in the Spratlys, then no power in the region will take China seriously or would openly confront China , to the interest and detriment of their nation.

In their view, the Philippine occupation of the Kalayaan Islands and claim in the Spratlys is see as a "threat of external aggression.."

gyera na! para maka bili na ng baril sa amerika! kelangan nila ang gyera!

A military provocation with China is a foregone conclusion. The United States does not have the power to fight China nor does it have the military and economic resources to engage the Chinese Superpower.

China owns hundreds of billions of dollars worth in American debt. In actuality, America is operating because of borrowed money from China. The Money that Obama used to fund his 'Programs' was borrowed from China. The money that the United States is using to fund its military programs and its domestic programs are borrowed from Chinese banks.

In case of  a war with CHina, China will revoke its investments in America and send the American economy plummeting. How can America fight a hypothetical war if its economy is in recession?

Remember. The recession that America experienced in 2008-2009 was only relieved by the American Government borrowing hundreds of billions of dollars from the Chinese Government.

---

One has to think about the logistics, and the costs of initiating a war. A war with China will not do America any good. America thinks for its own national interest. Will Washington risk relations with CHina to fight with the Philippines in case China attacks Philippines? I would say no. America would probably try to support Philippines by giving military aid or selling military equipment to the Philippine Military. But risking open war with the Chinese? I really doubt it.

every nation deserves to take pride in its particular history, but any history does not a superior race make.  even the name a people gives its country would not make them any better or worse than other nations.

it is not only the philippines but all the other claimants that the chinese do not seem to take seriously.  vietnam, for one, claims all of the spratlys like the chinese, unlike the philippines that claims only a part of it, specifically those islands and islets that are within the country's 200-nautical mile eez.

the chinese at the moment cannot be tagged as having dominated the pacific.  a closer look at their moves though would mean they may want to; after dominating trading and manufacturing, now they want territory, with sights set on the busy sea lanes where the spratlys is.  what they may wish for most is to keep u.s. influence out.

1. I agree with you. Unfortunately for us Filipinos, China does see itself as a Superior Society with an undaunted and practically unchanged continuous history of almost 5 millenia. In their view, even before the European civilizations started to build houses and when they were still living in caves, China already established itself as a civilization with a written language and the idea of a 'China'.

This is the reason why they are so adamant in their 'historical' premise and their right to 'claim' territories based on historical premises.

In Beijing's view, the Philippines is a weak nation that does not have the resources to challenge China. So, in regards to Confucian ideology, naturally, the weaker state is supposed to give in to the stronger and aggressive state. The Philippines and Vietnam challenging Chinese hegemony and domination in the South China Sea is seen as an affront to China and a slap in the face.

That is why they (their diplomatic representatives) are hostile to any Filipino challenge of their claims. This explains why the embassy representative raised his voice at a Filipino official.

2. There are many claimants to the Spratlys: Vietnam, the Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia, Brunei , Indonesia and China.

China does not recognize Taiwan, and prioritizes the reunification of Taiwan as an absolute must. China views Taiwan as a rogue province and has done everything in its power to enforce the '1 China Policy' throughout the world. Until recently, the Philippines recognized Taiwan as an independent state, however, the Philippines changed its policy and ultimately adhered to the '1 China Policy' under stress from Beijing. A payoff for this was increased lucrative trade between China and the Philippines.

China does not recognize the claims of Taiwan, Vietnam, The Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei. It only recognizes its own claim.

In the lat 1980s, China and Vietnam had a naval clash that resulted in the deaths of 70 Vietnamese marines and the sinking of a Vietnamese naval battlegroup by the PLAN (People's Liberation Army Navy) after the Vietnamese tried to seize islands that it claimed. China was quick in its response and obliterated the Vietnamese battlegroup and killed every single Vietnamese marine.

The Philippines was not engaged because at the time , there was a major American presence in the Philippines: Clark Air Force Base, Subic Bay Naval Base.

Any attack on Philippine military vehicles would have resulted in a quick and disastrous American air and naval response. But that was back in the 1980s.

3. China wants the United States out of its sphere of interest; naturally because China sees the United States as an interfering interloper in things that does not involve America, namely the Spratlys. The Spratlys is lucrative because of the following:

     a. the untold billions of units of natural gas reserves
     b. the South China Sea is an important sea lane in which 1/3 of the worlds ships passes through
     c. China no longer relies on the American Navy to patrol the South China Sea and now sees itself as capable to patrol its own sea lanes and to muster its own Blue-Water Navy to project Chinese interests abroad and in its own backyard.

2)  Confucius is one of the greatest educators.  He insisted that in education there should be no class distinctions. He established an education system for training in administrative and diplomatic arts.*

3)  A state, without law-abiding families and trustworthy gentlemen, without knowing the threat of external aggression, will perish.*

as for number 3, it looks like it is they with the current "aggression", with sights external.

*from http://index-china.com/main/people/confucianism.php

Chinese Confucian Culture is unique in that it focuses on the concept of Filial Piety. Filial Piety stresses respect for one's elders and those in authority. It requires one's noting that in ancient Chinese history and religion, the Emperor was considered to be the 'Son of Heaven' who has received the Mandate of Heaven to rule and guide the Empire and the subjects within as the mortal father of the entire nation.

In the Chinese view of 'Heaven', the Jade Empress bows before the Jade Emperor (the Emperor of Heaven); and so all the subjects in Heaven bow before the Heavenly Emperor.

And likewise , this relegates to Earth.

The Emperor of China must bow before the power and authority of Heaven. The Imperial Ministers and Privy Councilors , too, have to bow to the Emperor of China. The Generals must bow to the Ministers, the Governors must bow to the Ministers, and likewise, the soldiers bow to the General.

This also transmits to the microeconomic scale. In the family unit, the Mother / Wife will bow to the Husband/ Father. And the Children will bow before their parents.

It is a notion of harmonious acceptance of authority. It has always been part of Chinese culture to recognize that. And thus, it renders us to realize and to accept how they (China and the Chinese people) see their place in the world and how they want to effect change for their national interest.

A proper understanding of this process gives us, Filipino people, an idea how geopolitical changes will affect the interest and state of the Republic of the Philippines.

China may not have a nationalized religion, however, they do have a moral compass via their age-old Confucian Culture. In fact, China influenced many other east asian societies, namely Japan, Korea and in part Vietnam through Confucian Culture.

The Chinese superiority complex comes from their history. Prior to European colonization and encroachment, and before China's shutting of the outside world, it was common for the Imperial court to receive envoys from around Asia. In order to initiate lucrative trade with China, the envoys had to kowtow to the Emperor.

The Chinese see themselves as culturally superior to all races; be they asian or foreign peoples. Even the name of the country reiterates that. China is otherwise known as "ZHONG GUO" , which means, "The Land between Heaven and Earth".

It would be safe to surmise that the Chinese do not take the Filipno claim seriously because it does not see the Philippines as a serious contender. Nor does it see the Philippines as threat to Chinese domination of the Pacific.

This is antagonistic, of course, to Filipino national interest.

Today as I was coming back from errands, I was approached by a homeless man asking for money.

I looked at his fingernails and saw that he had spoon-shaped fingernails, which are indicative of Oxygen saturation deficiency. Etiology was probably untreated cardiomyopathy.

Government here should do more for the homeless in the streets. There should be more programs for aid for the marginalized.

Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed. 14As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy."

17Since you call on a Father who judges each man's work impartially, live your lives as strangers here in reverent fear. 18For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, 19but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 20He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. 21Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.

by: Lorenzo Lucino

There sits a log by the streams near anislag
i came to it some summer day
and woe did it talk back

such unwholesome talk this log permeated
to think that i did not hear his uttering lips
oh with discretion, respect, and posterity
did i address

however, the log continued to address only malcontent

so i walked on by and left the log
to the loneliness that it once had
and the companionship with a dull frog.

The Lord's Answer:

30 Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. 32 So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion. 34 He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 And the next day he took out two denarii [3] and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.’ 36 Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?” 37 He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” And Jesus said to him, “You go, and do likewise.”

History / A History Of The Beiyang Fleet
July 01, 2011, 02:13:46 PM
When the Beiyang (Northern Sea) Fleet started operations in 1871 in Weihaiwei, it consisted only of four ships patrolling China’s northern seas. At the time it was considered to be the weakest of the Qing’s Four Regional Fleets (the other three being the Nanyang Fleet, the Fujian Fleet, and the Guangdong Fleet). That all changed when Li Hongzhang, Viceroy of Zhili and trusted adviser of Empress Dowager Cixi, took command in the late 1870s. Using his influence over the empress dowager and the court, Li slowly diverted funds to the Beiyang Fleet until it recieved the majority of the Qing naval funds. By the mid 1880s the Beiyang Fleet was closing the gaps with the larger Nanyang Fleet and by 1890 it was the largest of the Four Regional Fleets.

At its height, the Qing Navy had seventy-eight vessels and grossed at nearly eighty four thousand tons The Beiyang Fleet constituted more than half of that number and it was just one of four Chinese fleets. The pride of the Beiyang fleet was two German built battleships, the Dingyuan and Zhenyuan, armed with four 12 in. guns each. Together with eight German and British built cruisers, they formed the backbone of the Beiyang Fleet.

Li did well to keep his fleet safe and combat ready. During the Sino-French War of 1884-1885, Li kept the Beiyang Fleet away from fighting. He competed vigorously for funds against the Qing’s Inner Asian campaigns and the opulent spending of the empress dowager. However Li’s enemies at court, particularly the emperor’s teacher Weng Tonghe (who happened to control the Ministry of Revenue), delayed and tried to deny Li his funds. The emperor, although willing to support him, feared the wrath of the empress dowager. And Cixi, caught up in her dreams of a new Summer Palace, diverted naval funds to help pay for her own expenses.

Li was caught in an awkward position. On one hand he realized that the ambitions of Japan needed to be dealt with and sought to keep upgrading his navy to prevent a loss in case war with Japan did indeed occur. On the other hand he was fiercely loyal to the empress dowager and could not refuse her wishes. As a result Li had to divert his coveted naval funds for the construction of the Summer Palace and despite opposition, sought donations for the palace by advertising it as for the navy. Nevertheless Li maintained a positive outlook and in a report to the Guangxu Emperor, he boasted that the Beiyang Fleet was larger than the American navy and Japan was not a worry.

Yet Li knew he could not match the Japanese in combat. His equipment was outdated and he lacked the shells needed for the powerful cannons. Corruption was rampant within the Beiyang Navy administration. Li’s advisers and generals diverted ammunition funds for their own personal use and stacked boxes of shells with coal. Some ships filled their shells with sand because gunpowder was nowhere to be found. Although all the corrupt officials were executed, the funds were nowhere to be found. In a training exercise meant to show the Qing government and foreign dignitaries the might of the Beiyang Fleet, Li planted explosives on the target ships and had them denoted by live sailors to simulate an accurate shot by the ships’ nonexistent shells. The Japanese dignitary, who was onboard, painted a grim picture of the event and caused the Japanese military to pay special attention to the Beiyang Fleet.

When the Sino-Japanese War broke out on July 24, 1894, foreign press was certain of a Chinese victory. Although construction of new ships stopped completely in 1888, the Qing fleet of sixty five ships was ranked 8th in the world while Japan’s thirty two ship fleet was ranked 11th. The Beiyang Fleet itself matched the Japanese in terms of ships and possessed superior firepower and armor. The Dingyuan and the Zhengyuan was said to be even more powerful than the Maine and the Texas, the largest ships of the American navy. Vice Admiral Ballard of the Royal Navy believed the Beiyang Fleet was ready for action and later assessment believed the Chinese was in a very good position to win the battle at sea. However two factors prevented that from happening.

The first, as mentioned above, was the lack of funding and ammunition. The Beiyang fleet could not service their ships and corruption of naval funds led to inadequate shells. In subsequent battles, the Chinese resorted to ramming Japanese ships because they had ran out of shells to fire. The other factor was the lack of a coordinated structure. The Qing had four navies, yet they were each their own separated entity and commanded by their own separate commander. And so while the Beiyang Fleet participate in battle, the other three Qing fleets sat idly by (the Nanyang Fleet considered it revenge for Li’s reluctance in aiding them during the Sino-French War) and watched from afar. The Japanese were able to concentrate their entire navy into smashing the Beiyang Fleet and the Nanyang Fleet sent ships only after the major battles were over.

Still the Qing government maintained a positive outlook when war broke out. The empress dowager agreed to stop construction of the Summer Palace and use palace funds to help Li Hongzhang. Admiral Ito Sukehiro, fearing the power of the Beiyang Fleet, even attempted a surprise naval attack on Weihaiwei. However a gun salute from a passing British vessel alerted the Chinese of the Japanese naval presence and Ito was forced to withdraw. The two fleets met again on September 17, 1894 at the Battle of the Yellow Sea (also known as the Battle of the Yalu River). It was the largest naval engagement of the war and sealed the fate of the Beiyang fleet.

Battle of the Yellow Sea by Korechika

Commanded by Admiral Ding Ruchang, the Beiyang fleet consisted of both the Dingyuan and the Zhengyuan, as well as seven cruisers and five other vessels; the bulk of the Beiyang Fleet. The Japanese was commanded by Admiral Ito and consisted of the battleship Matsushima and eight protected cruisers. The battle begun badly for the Chinese, their smaller ships were fired upon by larger Japanese vessels and the Chinese fleet failed to adjust its formation when the Japanese fleet split in half. This forced the Chinese to divide their firepower and target two opposing Japanese fleets at the same time.

The flagship Dingyuan then fired a straight salvo at the Japanese fleet, which turned out to be a costly mistake. When the Dingyuan underwent sea trials in 1883, the Germans specifically noted that the main guns should not be fired on an ahead bearing. Doing so would result in the destruction of the flying bridge and Admiral Ding, along with most of his officers, was injured by his own ship.

The Chinese fleet fired on the Japanese while the two fleets passed each other but failed to score any significant damage with their superior guns. One of the reasons being was the poor quality of the Chinese shells. The Japanese were able to do much more damage to the Chinese cruisers, which were made out of wood and covered with a layer of metal. Despite a higher hit rate by the Chinese, their inferior shells prevented much damage from being dealt to the Japanese. When the battle was over, eight Chinese ships were sunk while the Japanese only suffered four ships damaged. The remnants of the Beiyang force fled back to Lushunkou (Port Arthur) and stayed there until the Japanese captured it in November. The Beiyang fleet then regrouped at their last naval base, Weihaiwei.

Pressing their advantage, the Japanese fleet struck Weihaiwei two months later. The Beiyang fleet was now reduced to only fifteen ships, including the badly damaged Dingyuan and Zhengyuan. The Japanese had twenty five ships as well as ground troops who could rain down artillery fire on the Chinese defenders. Despite a brave defense, the battle proved to be a futile one. An attempted breakout by several Chinese vessels ended in total failure and the Dingyuan was scuttled after taking heavy fire. Knowing the battle was lost, Admiral Ding surrender Weihaiwei to the Japanese and committed suicide. His deputy, Admiral Liu, ordered his warship scuttled and also committed suicide. Likewise the Chinese land commander General Chang also committed suicide.

I have the same view as Martin Luther King Jr who said, "Science investigates; religion interprets. Science gives man knowledge which is power; religion gives man wisdom which is control. Science deals mainly with facts; religion deals mainly with values. The two are not rivals. They are complementary. Science keeps religion from sinking into the valley of crippling irrationalism and paralyzing obscurantism. Religion prevents science from falling into the marsh of obsolete materialism and moral nihilism."

I believe in Medical Healing. I also know that one's spiritual life can help in that person's coping of any medical ailments. Spirituality has a psychological empowering effect that can help reduce mental strain , particularly during intense /painful medical procedures.

The term "ant tribe" was coined by Lian Si, a professor who wrote a book with that title about the post-1980 generation.

"Unlike slums in South America or Southeast Asia, these villages are populated with educated young people as opposed to laborers or street peddlers," says Lian, who teaches at the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing.

The Chinese born after 1980 are among the most privileged generation in China's long history. Living after the communist government gave up the radical politics that tossed their parents and grandparents between chaos and penury, they have known only ever-rising levels of prosperity.

In their lifetimes, gleaming new office towers have remade China's cities. Hundreds of millions have been lifted from poverty. Travel abroad, private cars and apartments and a university education â€" all once the preserve of the elite â€" are increasingly common.

Vibrant megacities such as Beijing and Shanghai are the epitome of this good life. So the ant generation comes, bringing its aspirations.

But their very abundance keeps entry-level salaries low, while housing and other costs rise. Real estate prices have doubled in just three years in major cities, outpacing a 40 percent increase in urban wages from 2005 to 2009.

"This is the biggest struggle for China's young generation today," says Liu Neng, a sociology professor at Beijing University. "People in their 40s and 50s, now leaders in society, have already experienced hardships, but it's the younger generation's turn to face challenges before they become part of the country's elite." -- http://www.foxnews.com/world/2010/06/27/chinas-young-ant-tribe-generation-home-shared-bed-far-home/

Quite similar to the situation in the Philippines; where nurses are working as call center agents. Where accountants are working as starbucks sales associates.

Bible Study / The Bible on the 'Sluggard'
July 01, 2011, 11:20:55 AM
Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise. Without having any chief, officer, or ruler, she prepares her bread in summer and gathers her food in harvest. How long will you lie there, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, ...and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man.

Anyone who receives instruction in the word must share all good things with his instructor. Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God.  2

I know I'm gone so far away this time  :'(

There is no such thing as a person who is so far 'away' from the mercy of God, Tohnichi. If you repent of your sins and ask Jesus Christ for forgiveness and direction in your life, He will do it. Remember Peter ?

If you open your bible and open to Matthew Chapter 14, I want you to read verses 28 to 31. This is important.

In Chapter 14 of Matthew we notice that Jesus gets out of the boat and walks on water. This was part of God's Plan in ministering His Word and in the revelation of the Glory of His Son to the disciples. We notice that Peter says to the Lord Jesus Christ, "Lord command me to the waters and I will come!"

Jesus then tells Peter, "Come!".

This is important, Tohnicihi. Because Peter is in fact the proto-us. His role is that of us. Jesus invites him to come to the waters, meaning, to come to Jesus Christ. Just as we all are invited to Jesus Christ.

If you continue to read on. You notice that Peter does walk, but begins to sink after his fear gets the best of him.

As Peter begins to sink, he yells out, "LORD, HELP ME!"

And what does the Lord Jesus Christ do?

Verse 31 reiterates The Lord's Faith-fullness: "Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him."

We all should remember this; in that when we need Jesus Christ's help, we should reach out to Him and have Complete Trust in Him, as what Peter had. Christ will rescue you, no matter what.

He is the Maker, Redeemer, Savior, the Lord of All Things.

God Bless and stay strong!

Lazy people want much but get little, but those who work hard will prosper and be satisfied.

        -Proverbs 13:4

In this verse we see that both people who are lazy and those who exert themselves have wants and needs, but only “those who work hard” will be satisfied.  Not only that, those who work had will, in fact, prosper.  Look, I know it’s not nearly as easy as being lazy, but if you want to prosper, if you want to be satisfied, it looks like you’re going to have to work hard for it.

Combine the last two verses together and you see that we should forget about being lazy and/or trying get-rich-schemes to reach our goals.  Instead, we should take a disciplined approach to our work to earn some money and work hard to be wise with that money and save and invest some of it.  Over time that will grow into some wealth that we can use to support our family and help others.

And don’t forget the significance of the final phrase in this verse – “be satisfied.”  Isn’t that what we’re all really looking for – to reach a level of satisfaction with our lives?  Some extremely wealthy people are miserable in their lives while others who seem dirt poor might be completely satisfied with theirs.  There’s more to life that how big your net worth is.
