Bible Study / Re: Why did Lucifer rebel against God?
August 04, 2011, 12:42:33 AM
Quote from: statesville on August 03, 2011, 04:41:14 AM
According to Ezekiel 28:15 this exalted angel was sinless  for the first part of his existence,
but at a later point he defiled himself with behavior contrary to God's character.
Ezekiel 28:17 = states, "Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty"
In the scriptures, the word heart usually refers to the inner control center of a personal being.
In the seat of emotions (1 Sam 2:1)
                       the mind (Proverbs 23:7) and
the will   (Dan 1:8  thus all decisions are made in the heart
When the Bible mentions the lifting up of the heart in an evil sense, as it does in Ezekiel 28
it is referring to  inflating the inner control center with a disposition of pride (2Chron 26:16, 32:25,26)
Because he was  the most magnificent of God's creatures, this exalted angel willfully permitted his heart
  to be inflated with pride.
Through this means, sin began in him and he passed from a sinless state to a sinful state.
Thus pride was the cause of the radical change in this exalted angel.

Quote from: statesville on August 03, 2011, 05:04:20 AM
Because Satan wanted to be like God and because God  had a universal kingdom over which
He ruled as the sovereign  king, Satan determined that he too  had to have a universal kingdom
over which  he could rule as the sovereign king.
Because God  had angels serving Him in His kingdom, Satan determined  that he too must have angels
  serving him in his kingdom.
He, however had a problem. Because he was only a creature and not the Creator, he lacked the ability
  to create other  angels.
The most he could hope was to persuade God's angels to join him in rebellion against God.
Rev 123:4 = one-third of the angels  followed Satan and fell away from God.
Because they personally made this choice to rebel, they thereby lost their sinless state and became
permanently locked into a fallen, evil state.

Ma'am,

Salamat kaayo sa imohang biblical-based explanation for the metamorphosis of Lucifer from angelic being to accuser of God.

Daghang Salamat.

my understanding is that for everyday, common, unconstrained conversations, we may even pick up colloquialisms without knowing it.  it is our right to understand and to be understood in our daily interactions with people, and i believe colloquialisms serve as common ground, some kind of equalizer.  they're just not supposed to be used during formal speech or writing.

“what’s up?” is a colloquial, and no one is complaining, hehe.  i won't use it in a business letter though.

thank you, isles.

Bible Study / Re: The Faith of St. Stephen the Martyr
August 04, 2011, 12:27:01 AM
And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people.

Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia and of Asia, disputing with Stephen. And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake. Then they suborned men, which said, We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and against God. And they stirred up the people, and the elders, and the scribes, and came upon him, and caught him, and brought him to the council. And set up false witnesses, which said, This man ceaseth not to speak blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law: for we have heard him say, that this Jesus of Nazareth shall destroy this place, and shall change the customs which Moses delivered us.

And all that sat in the council, looking steadfastly on him, saw his face as it had been the face of an angel.

Then said the high priest, Are these things so?

And he said, Men, brethren, and fathers, hearken: [Stephen here makes his defense, concluding with a terrible, denunciation of the Jews as being stiffnecked and persecutors of their prophets,
and as betrayers and murderers of Jesus Christ.]

When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they, gnashed on him with their teeth.

But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up steadfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God, and said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.

Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord, and cast him out of, the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man's feet, whose name was Saul. And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.

And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

Acts 12:3â€"19 tells how Peter was put into prison by King Herod, but the night before his trial an angel appeared to him, and told him to leave. Peter's chains fell off, and he followed the angel out of prison, thinking it was a vision (verse 9). The prison doors opened of their own accord, and the angel led Peter into the city.

When the angel suddenly left him, Peter came to himself and returned to the house of Mary, the mother of John Mark. A servant girl called Rhoda came to answer the door, and when she heard Peter's voice she was so overjoyed that she rushed to tell the others, and forgot to open the door for Peter (verse 14). Eventually Peter is let in and describes "how the Lord had brought him out of prison" (verse 17). When his escape is discovered, Herod orders the guards put to death (verse 19).

This is holy Church, the one Church, the true Church, the Catholic Church, fighting against all heresies; she can fight, but she cannot be conquered. All heresies are expelled from her as if they were dead branches pruned from the vine; she herself, however, remains fixed in her root, in her vine, in her charity. In the life of the body a man is sometimes sick, and unless he takes medicine, he will die. Even so in the spiritual life, a man is sick on account of sin. For that reason he needs medicine so that he may be restored to health; and this grace is bestowed in the sacrament of Penance.

You're right, we should upgrade Pag-Asa Island's ability to accommodate air force jets.

Right now, the PAF should send some of its trainer jet fighters to the region to put emphasis on the Philippine Claim.

During the reign of President Marcos, the Philippine Armed Forces was the cream of the crop of the militaries in South East Asia. The full strength of the Philippine Armed Forces at the time, the active forces that is, was at 250,000 strong and some auxiliary reserves.

The Air Force had F-8 Phantoms and a fleet of F-5 Tiger II Air Superiority Fighters at the time. Did you know, Green, that a Soviet long range bomber that entered Philippine Air Space , at the time, was detected and trailed by Philippine Jet Fighters and forced out of our air space?

Philippine Air Force, at the time, was unchallenged.

My question : (to fr. roel, simplylee, statesville, mike, ben, and other bible readers, bible scholars)

Lucifer was the angel of the garden of eden, and the favorite angel of the Lord. In fact, he was beloved by the Most High. He also had the beautific vision, being able to see and approach the Lord God. Yet, still, he was consumed with hatred for his own Creator and Father.

How was this so?

Did Lucifer really think he could ascend the heavens and triumph over the Divine Triumvirate of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost?

What persuaded and what convinced 1/3rd of all the Angelic Hosts to join the War in Lucifer's Side?

Where they really that sure that they could successfully assault the Divine Thronehood of God?

‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says:

“‘You were the seal of perfection,
full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.
13 You were in Eden,
  the garden of God;
every precious stone adorned you:
  carnelian, chrysolite and emerald,
  topaz, onyx and jasper,
  lapis lazuli, turquoise and beryl.
Your settings and mountings were made of gold;
on the day you were created they were prepared.
14 You were anointed as a guardian cherub,
  for so I ordained you.
You were on the holy mount of God;
you walked among the fiery stones.
15 You were blameless in your ways
from the day you were created
till wickedness was found in you.
16 Through your widespread trade
  you were filled with violence,
  and you sinned.
So I drove you in disgrace from the mount of God,
and I expelled you, guardian cherub,
  from among the fiery stones.
17 Your heart became proud
  on account of your beauty,
and you corrupted your wisdom
  because of your splendor.
So I threw you to the earth;
I made a spectacle of you before kings.
18 By your many sins and dishonest trade
  you have desecrated your sanctuaries.
So I made a fire come out from you,
  and it consumed you,
and I reduced you to ashes on the ground
in the sight of all who were watching.
19 All the nations who knew you
  are appalled at you;
you have come to a horrible end
  and will be no more.’”

Sunni sources record Muhammad visited each of the seven heavens on his Mi'raj.  There he met Adam, Jesus Christ and John the Baptist, Joseph, Idris (considered by most scholars to be Enoch), Aaron, Moses and Abraham in the first to the seventh heaven in the mentioned order.  He made the travels to ultimately meet God and The Divine Throne above the heavens.*

n.b. it looks like the divine throne is beyond the seven heavens for the sunni.

so does islam have names for the seven heavens.

According to Shi'ite sources, a hadith from Imam Ali mentions the name of the seven heavens as mentioned below:

1.   Rafi' (the lowest heaven)
2.   Qaydum
3.   Marum
4.   Arfalun
5.   Hay'oun
6.    Arous
7.   Ajma'

Hehehe interesting. Araboth, the realm of heaven where The Lord God (JEHOVAH) is supposed to be located, was the target of the Rebellious Angelic Army. Lucifer, the leader of the Rebellious Angelic Army (1/3rd of the Angelic Hosts), claimed that he would usurp the throne of God and rise over the Divine Mountain.

Even before Lucifer, then the strongest Angel in Heaven, could finish his loud boast, he was pummeled out of Heaven by God Almighty.

Not recommended, isles. It's better to just stretch and walk around instead of taking this pill especially in the case of 'extended computer use'.

Walking around, stretching, even for 30-340 minutes a day can markedly reduce the possibility of thrombosis.

Quote"The poor have no powerful lobbyists," Bishop Ramirez told Obama. "But they have the most powerful moral claim on this process."
#20152
By Patricia Zapor
Catholic News Service

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- After a July 20 meeting with President Barack Obama, leaders of the faith-based Circle of Protection came away reassured about his commitment to protecting assistance for the poor in impending budget cuts.

But they remain worried that a deal to raise the federal debt ceiling and head off the economic crisis will include drastic cuts to services for the poor and might halve or eliminate some entire programs that provide aid to some of the world's disaster zones such as drought-stricken eastern Africa.

"There is a movement on to eliminate all emergency aid. ... It will cost lives," said Tony Hall, a former Democratic congressman from Ohio and now director of the Alliance to End Hunger. Hall also previously served as ambassador to the U.N. Agencies for Food and Agriculture.

"There are no votes there" among the world's poor, said Hall in a July 21 teleconference that included most of the participants in the meeting with the president. "Members of Congress can write it all off and they don't suffer for that when it comes to election time."

"The only voice they have is people like us," he said.

The 40-minute session with the president "was very enlightening and energizing," said Bishop Ricardo Ramirez of Las Cruces, N.M., a member of the U.S. bishops' Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development, one of the participants in the White House meeting.

"It was wonderful to see the president so engaged," the bishop told Catholic News Service in a separate interview. "He seems to accept our message."

That message is that political leaders should pay attention to the fundamental moral principle of putting the needs of the poor first in allocating scarce government resources, the bishop said.

He told the president that "as religious leaders, our concern is not which party wins the current political battles," but rather that "if we all don't speak up, who is likely to lose: the families trying to feed their kids, the jobless looking for work, the children who need health care, the hungry and sick and hopeless around the world."

Joining Bishop Ramirez for the meeting were representatives of the National Association of Evangelicals, the National Council of Churches, the Salvation Army, Bread for the World, Sojourners and others.

Candy Hill, senior vice president for social policy and government affairs for Catholic Charities USA, a participant in the Circle of Protection, but not a part of the White House delegation, told CNS that the debt-ceiling talks and the associated prospects of budget slashing are a roller-coaster ride.

For the poor and marginalized in the United States and beyond, "the best possible scenario is a bipartisan agreement and not a partisan political debate," she said. "The poor and marginalized are at risk whenever there is a partisan political debate."

She said at Catholic Charities and among similar organizations, "we know this is a crisis. We know there is a need for shared sacrifice." But the solutions don't lie in "turning off the faucets" of programs that provide a safety net for the poor. She said one example would be cutting the costs of bureaucracy before services.

John Carr, executive director of the U.S. bishops' Department of Justice, Peace and Human Development, who attended the White House meeting and moderated the teleconference the next day, said it was "an extraordinary meeting," bringing together people from organizations that do not typically work together on legislative agendas.

Barbara Williams-Skinner, co-facilitator of the African-American Clergy Network, said on the teleconference that the unusual nature of the delegation was not lost on Obama.

"The White House is used to being petitioned by people for the needs of their own organizations or themselves," she said. More rare is for organizations to seek help not for themselves but for entire segments of society, she said.

Bishop Ramirez told CNS that he told the president that from the perspective of New Mexicans, there are many "givens" in the debate over how to make the budget cuts congressional leaders are demanding in return for voting to raise the debt ceiling. Those include: for Republicans, no new taxes; for some Democrats, no cuts in Medicare; for others, no cuts in military spending; for the Obama administration, additional revenues.

"Sadly, if you listen to the debate it seems that protecting the poor and vulnerable is not a given," Bishop Ramirez said.

He and the others in the meeting asked the president to join their Circle of Protection, around programs and resources to support the lives and dignity of the poor.

The Circle of Protection is an effort of religious leaders to speak out on behalf of the poor to prevent funding cuts to programs that provide the safety net from poverty. Principles included in a statement of the effort include reducing future deficits and urging political leaders to review and consider tax revenues, military spending and entitlements as ways of addressing deficits.

Also, their statement emphasizes the moral dimension of answering Christ's call to protect "the least of these," as well as turning to prayer and fasting in asking for guidance for national leaders.

"The poor have no powerful lobbyists," Bishop Ramirez told Obama. "But they have the most powerful moral claim on this process."

He and the other participants asked the president to "be their voice."

"You are at your best when you echo the Scriptures and remind us we are our brothers' and sisters' keepers," the bishop said he told Obama. "We need more of that from you."

Bishop Ramirez said of his one-day trip to Washington: "It's not every day the U.S. bishops get invited to the White House and get to talk about something as crucial as care for the poor."

By Catholic News Service

BALTIMORE (CNS) -- Italian Archbishop Pietro Sambi, the Vatican nuncio to the United States, died late July 27 at Johns Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore after a hospitalization that began with lung surgery. He was 73.

On July 22, the apostolic nunciature in Washington announced that the archbishop had been "placed on assisted ventilation to attempt recovery of his lung function" two weeks after undergoing "a delicate lung surgery."

A veteran Vatican diplomat, Archbishop Sambi was appointed as U.S. nuncio, or ambassador, in December 2005 by Pope Benedict XVI. Prior to the U.S. appointment, he had been nuncio to Israel and Cyprus; he was the second Vatican ambassador to Israel, after the Vatican and Israel established diplomatic relations in 1994.

After he arrived in the United States Feb. 24, 2006, he said in an interview with Catholic News Service in Washington that he was impressed by the vitality of U.S. Catholicism, the level of weekly Mass attendance among U.S. Catholics and their generosity toward others.

The archbishop was known for his warm and affable manner, sense of humor and being open and ready to listen to people.

Archbishop Sambi, a native of central Italy, was ordained to the priesthood in 1964. He was named an archbishop and nuncio to Burundi in 1985, a position he held for six years until being named nuncio to Indonesia. In 1998, Pope John Paul II named him nuncio to Israel and Cyprus and apostolic delegate in Jerusalem and Palestine.

During Pope Benedict's April 2008 visit to the United States, Archbishop Sambi accompanied the pope and during the pontiff's stay in Washington hosted him at the Vatican Embassy, or nunciature, where the pope held a historic private meeting with five victims of clergy sexual abuse.

Before the pope's arrival, the archbishop said the pontiff was coming to "strengthen the faith, the hope and love of the Catholic Church in the United States," adding that he hoped the pope's visit would "bring a new wind of Pentecost ... a new springtime" to the U.S. church.

Among honors the archbishop received was a Living Stones Solidarity Award in 2009. Bestowed by the Holy Land Christian Ecumenical Foundation, it honors those who have made "a sustained and extraordinary effort to love, support and stand in solidarity with the Christians in the Holy Land." In May of this year, he was awarded an honorary doctor in public and ecclesial service degree from Jesuit-run Regis University in Denver.

During his U.S. tenure, Archbishop Sambi traveled throughout the country to attend the ordinations of bishops, celebrate Mass and participate in myriad events.

As a result he "understood and loved our nation," said New York Archbishop Timothy M. Dolan, president of the U.S. bishops' conference. The nuncio "enjoyed the highest respect and deepest affection" of the bishops and the nation's Catholics, the archbishop said in a statement July 28.

Last September, Archbishop Sambi was the principal celebrant of a Mass marking the 13th anniversary of the death of Blessed Teresa of Kolkata, which coincided with the U.S. Postal Service's issuance of a stamp bearing her likeness.

"This stamp looks almost like a holy card. I pray it may serve in some small way as a reminder of Mother Teresa," Archbishop Sambi said. "May Jesus stamp upon our hearts the same spirit as Mother's to love God, the church and the poorest of the poor more than ourselves."

In 2009 at a 10th anniversary observance of the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification signed by Catholics and Lutherans, Archbishop Sambi told a Washington audience that today's disciples of Jesus, like the first disciples, should be recognized by how they love each other and, guided by Jesus, they should walk together in a spirit of unity, mutual respect and brotherhood.

"Each act of unity is profession of faith in the Lord Jesus," said the archbishop.

Around the same time, he spoke in Garrison, N.Y., at a centennial celebration of the reception of the Franciscan Friars and Sisters of Atonement into the Catholic Church.

"The spirit of Jesus creates unity," said Archbishop Sambi. "Where there is love and unity, there is God. Where there is unity, there is a spirit of family."

Earlier that year, the archbishop hosted a reception at the Vatican Embassy for the Catholic Association of Latino Leaders, attended by hundreds as the group launched its first national outreach effort during Hispanic Heritage Month.

"To be a leader is to have a clear sense of identity," he said at the reception. "What I wish for all Latino leaders is that you have a sense of identity and of very clearly belonging."

Archbishop Sambi told the 2009 assembly of the Conference of Major Superiors of Men that the church should not be "a prisoner of sex scandals," nor should it be "a prisoner of the crisis of religious life," adding that he was "deeply convinced that the values and witness of religious life are extremely important for the renewal of the church."

Pointing out the challenges faced by today's priests and religious orders, the archbishop called the clergy abuse scandal "a horrible experience which has deprived all of us of our credibility before our faithful and before society."

At the 2007 convention of the National Catholic Educational Association, he called teachers "the greatest artists of the world ... because you sculpt the best of what you are, not in a piece of marble but in human beings who are the glory of God."

"Each of us has forgotten a lot of what we were told in school," he added, "but a lot of what's inside is from the example of teachers."

In his first remarks to a U.S. bishops' meeting, in June 2006 in Los Angeles, he described them as "a people of great experience, great holiness and also great suffering." He stressed the importance of evangelization and urged the bishops not to be disheartened by the clergy sexual abuse scandals that have plagued them in media headlines for the past four years.

In all his previous diplomatic posts from the Vatican, he said, he found that what is essential is faith in Jesus and the Gospel message of his resurrection.

To highlight the global role of the United States and the U.S. church, he shared with the bishops an anecdote from his time in Indonesia. He told of a Christmas he spent in a remote village there. In its street shops, he recalled, "I found Coca-Cola and Marlboros."

"I think the United States and the church of the United States has something more to bring to the world than Marlboros and Coca-Cola," he said.

In Washington, after he arrived as nuncio, he told CNS that in his travels as a papal diplomat, it was "difficult to find a part of the world where the charity of U.S. Catholics did not reach the poor or sick people."

Before he departed Israel, the one thing he would have liked to have seen during his tenure in Jerusalem, he said, was the development of a larger and more aggressive interreligious dialogue to show "that the holy city of Jerusalem (unites) human beings, not divides them."

There are times, Fr. Roel, that I think of my decision to abandon my decision to attend the Seminary. There was a time in college that I was convinced in becoming a Priest. It was on my 4th year of college that I decided not to (tho I had been discerning on the right decision from 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year).

There is something special in priesthood. The life of a priest, in my opinion, must be a truly rewarding one. Spiritually.

My life before You
I was a flame burning down
I was burning out

But You knew me better
For You there was never a doubt
God, since You gave me life
Something was different, I Knew it the instant
You put the light in me

The spark, the shot to the heart
You are the hope that leads me out of the dark
You let Your love shine down
So that the world could see
You put the light in me

The light, you put the light in me
The light, you put the light in me
The light, you put the light in me
The light, you put the light in me

You are the Maker, you tell the sun when to rise
I'm just a house on a hill
But You make me brighter than all the stars in the sky
Keep me from growing down

Cause in Your perfection, I'm just a reflection
So pull me closer to You
I catch like a fire and I'll hold You higher
Cause You put the light in me

The spark, the shot to the heart
You are the hope that leads me out of the dark
You let Your love shine down
So that the world could see
You put the light in me

The light, you put the light in me
The light, you put the light in me
The light, you put the light in me
The light, you put the light in me

I'll raise it high, I'll let it show
From the rooftops down to the streets below
In day and night, You will be known
And all will see
You put the light in me

Cause You put the light in me
The Spark, the shot to the heart
You are the hope that leads me out of the dark
You let Your love shine down
So that the world could see
You put the light in me

The light, you put the light in me
The light, you put the light in me
The light, you put the light in me
The light, you put the light in me

When I helped a friend who was in need, even tho gamay ra to para nako, dako na to para nija.

Some months later, when I was in need, and needed money to buy medical review books, out of no where, a friend who had the same set of review books decided to give me them for free. Without my needing to ask.

God helped me out. When it was my turn in 'needing'.

Tinuod jyud. If you give, God will give you back in due time...
