On August 23, 2008, 51-year-old Michael Hearon traveled from his condo to his farm in Happy Valley, Tennessee with plans to mow the lawn. That morning, neighbors saw Michael leaving the farm on his ATVâ€"the last known sighting of him. The next day, Michael’s friends visited the farm and saw his truck parked on the road with the windows rolled down. Michael’s trailer was also attached to the vehicle with his lawnmower loaded on top of it, but the farm’s lawn had not been mowed. His friends returned the next day and became concerned when they saw his truck parked in the same location and noticed that his keys, cell phone, and wallet were still inside.Three days after Michael’s disappearance, investigators uncovered their only clue when they found Michael’s ATV on a steep hill about 1.5 kilometers (1 mi) from his home, a location he was never known to visit. Other than that, no major leads have surfaced and authorities could find no physical evidence to suggest foul play. Michael was not known to have any enemies or any reason to disappear on his own, so his whereabouts are a truly baffling mystery. -- http://listverse.com/

Brian Shaffer was a 27-year-old medical student from Ohio State University who went to a bar called the Ugly Tuna Saloona on the evening of April 1, 2006. Sometime between 1:30 and 2:00 AM, he mysteriously vanished. He had been drinking heavily that night and, after talking to his girlfriend on his cell phone, was last seen speaking to two young women. However, no one at the bar could remember seeing him after that. The most baffling unanswered question in this case is how Brian exited the bar. The establishment’s surveillance footage clearly showed him arriving, but no footage could be found of his exit! None of his friends or family believed that he disappeared on his own. While he had been upset about his mother passing away three weeks beforehand, he was doing well in school and had plans to go on vacation with his girlfriend. But if Brian was abducted and met with foul play, how did the perpetrator get him out of the bar without being seen by any witnesses or the security cameras? -- http://listverse.com/

"There is no subject on which more dangerous nonsense is talked and thought than marriage. If the mischief stopped at talking and thinking it would be bad enough; but it goes further, into disastrous anarchical action. Because our marriage law is inhuman and unreasonable to the point of downright abomination, the bolder and more rebellious spirits form illicit unions, defiantly sending cards round to their friends announcing what they have done. Young women come to me and ask me whether I think they ought to consent to marry the man they have decided to live with; and they are perplexed and astonished when I, who am supposed (heaven knows why!) to have the most advanced views attainable on the subject, urge them on no account to compromise themselves without the security of an authentic wedding ring. They cite the example of George Eliot, who formed an illicit union with Lewes. They quote a saying attributed to Nietzsche, that a married philosopher is ridiculous, though the men of their choice are not philosophers. When they finally give up the idea of reforming our marriage institutions by private enterprise and personal righteousness, and consent to be led to the Registry or even to the altar, they insist on first arriving at an explicit understanding that both parties are to be perfectly free to sip every flower and change every hour, as their fancy may dictate, in spite of the legal bond. I do not observe that their unions prove less monogamic than other people’s: rather the contrary, in fact; consequently, I do not know whether they make less fuss than ordinary people when either party claims the benefit of the treaty; but the existence of the treaty shows the same anarchical notion that the law can be set aside by any two private persons by the simple process of promising one another to ignore it."

“We are only doing this for one day. The INC activity is also significant and this is for a good cause,” he said.

Last night, Tumulak said the City deployed some 10 Kaohsiung buses to help ferry the people from SRP to outside the area.

This, so the jeepneys and buses could go back to their routes the soonest time possible, to address also the people stranded in terminals and city streets. (Jasmine Ninia S. Puthiyaveetil, USJ-R Mass Comm Intern)
#20128
As of 8 p.m. Friday, Tumulak could not yet say how many emergency incidents they responded to because they were still monitoring the activity.

Despite the inconvenience caused by the activity Friday, Yap, in a separate interview, said he would still prefer for the event to be held at the SRP and not in the Fuente Osmeña rotunda, saying that the traffic would’ve been harder to manage.

He told the riding public to be patient, saying the INC activity and road closures are rare.
#20129
“Daghan man gud sa ila nagtambay sa baywalk mao nang nanga-slide (Many of them stayed in the baywalk area and some of them slipped),” he said.

Those who responded to such incidents were the Basak Pardo Emergency Rescue Unit, Inawayan Rescue Unit and the Labangon Rescue Unit.

These three units, Tumulak said, responded to the emergencies since the INC medical team was not enough.

Walked

When the LDRRMC took over, they no longer allowed vehicles going to the SRP to use the tunnel. It was only used for vehicles going out of the SRP.

This left people going to the site with no choice but to walk from the area near the Compaña Maritima to the SRP.

Aside from people who fainted, Tumulak said there were also people who were taken by emergency response units after incurring fractures.

Since INC no longer seemed able to control the crowd, Tumulak said, he declared the activity around 1:30 p.m. under the control of the City Government, particularly the Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (LDRRMC).

He said this move had Mayor Michael Rama’s approval.

Early estimates placed the crowd at 200,000, but 350,000 was Cebu City Police Office Chief Mariano Natuel’s estimate.

Tunnel

Tumulak, who went to the site to oversee the activity as ordered by Mayor Michael Rama, lamented lack of crowd control by the security and communications team of the INC.

“Wa gyud nila mapugngi ang mga tawo (They couldn’t control the people),” he said.

Some of those who used the tunnel fainted due to the lack of ventilation inside, he said.

“The tunnel is not designed for parking. It is designed for moving vehicles mao nang ing-ana ang nahitabo (that’s why this happened). It was very risky,” the councilor said.
#20138
Citom deployed a total of 50 traffic enforcers at the SRP to manage the traffic as well as 50 jaywalking and clamping personnel to augment their force.

The INC’s evangelical mission was held at the site where the national thanksgiving mass for the sainthood of Pedro Calungsod was also held. Their parking area is the site where the VIPs were placed during the thanksgiving mass.

In their evangelical mission, the INC extended medical assistance to their constituents in the province and city and gave them sacks of rice as well.

In the tunnel, some of the vehicles were stranded for two to three hours, said Councilor Dave Tumulak, as the INC began to distribute their sacks of rice on the main road of the SRP.
#20139
Slow

Yap, in an interview Frirday, said what contributed to the heavy traffic was the slow movement of vehicles going to the site of the activity.

“There were some problems with parking because of the heavy rains recently. Most of the drivers were looking for an area that was not muddy. So traffic was slow-moving.

But at least (it was) moving,” he said.

Yap said the vehicles going to site occupied three lanes of the SRP instead of two lanes.

That was over and above the private vehicles that were used by some of the participants to go to the SRP.

Due to the event, City Traffic Operations and Management (Citom) executive director Atty. Rafael Yap said heavy traffic was experienced Friday on C. Padilla St. Mambaling Access Road was closed from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. to pave the way for the INC activity.

Heavy traffic was also reported on the Cebu South Coastal Road tunnel going to Talisay City, as well as in the neighboring intersections, including the area near the Cebu City Hall.
#20142
The INC rented a total of 490 public utility vehicles for their evangelical mission at the SRP to celebrate their 99th anniversary.

Based on their records, Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) regional director Ahmed Cuizon said they issued special permits to 245 vehicles, 130 buses and 115 jeepneys to be used by the INC in transporting people, both members and non-members, from different places in the province and the city to the SRP.

CEBU CITY -- Commuters heading home at the end of the workweek complained about the heavy traffic caused by an Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) activity Friday afternoon that gathered an estimated 350,000 people at the South Road Properties (SRP).

Hundreds of passengers from various parts of this city and Cebu province were stranded, while others took several rides to reach their destination.

Postcript:

I feel constrained to add yet another turn on my Florida retirement musing. Florida is fine for what I would call Stage One retirement. This is when the retiree, though old and tired and with a medley of aches and pains, is still active and alert. Stage Two retirement occurs when said retiree becomes really sick or very old, and activity and alertness diminish considerably. This may happen, of course, at any time â€" people get very old at different ages and really sick at any age. The thing about Florida is that at some point you’re likely to not be able to drive anymore, which means that you won’t need all those parking spots. You’ll also have bought every blessed thing in the strip malls, so you won’t care so much about the shopping. Your appetite will diminish, which means the good, cheap food won’t be as appealing. Golf and mahjong will also lose their allure, especially if you can’t walk or see straight. During this stage of retirement, from what I gather (I get this, mind you, second-hand through my in-laws), there begins an exodus back to the Northeast to be with children and relatives who care for (or at least have to care for) you.

Given that Stage Two retirement may mean returning to where you came from, I figure it makes sense to stay put and learn Mandarin. • 27 March 2013 -- http://thesmartset.com/
#20148
But that’s the thing. When you’re not ready to retire, you think of retirement in pretty exciting terms. Once you’re ready, you probably don’t want that much excitement. That’s when Florida, with its parking lots, Early Bird Specials, mock-Venetian waterways, and non-malaria-inducing tropical scenery, starts to look pretty damn good. I imagine that’s also when you start liking T-shirts with Swarovksi crystals.
#20149
My only problem with Florida now is the idea of retirement that goes with it. I mean when I do retire I have things I’d like to do. For example: take up mountain climbing or train for a half-marathon. Or maybe learn Mandarin and spend a year teaching in China. I might work for Habitat for Humanity or go somewhere in the real tropics and help out Doctors without Borders. None of these pursuits can be done easily in Florida.
#20150
It’s true that many of the people living in this area of Florida are old, but is that bad? Old people, I’ve come to feel, are often very interesting people â€" a fact that becomes increasingly evident as I grow old myself.

Also, since people are old, doctors are plentiful. This again is nice to know if you happen to be sick â€" or expect to be sick some day.
#20151
Food, by the way, is very good and very cheap in East Florida, especially if you go in for the Early Bird Special â€" despite the long wait at the Cheesecake Factory, even at 4:30 p.m. You can eat al fresco, which can make you think, if you close your eyes, that you’re in Florence or, if you happen to be near one of those drainage canals, Venice.
#20152
I admit that my New York City loyalties rebel at the car and mall culture of the Florida landscape (not to mention the esthetic of Swarovski crystals on T-shirts), but there’s something to be said for cruising along in balmy weather under non-malaria-inducing palm trees and turning into this or that strip mall to look over the latest batch of lime green espadrilles and pink tartan tennis skirts. It’s nice to have a perky young man at the Publix Supermarket carry your grocery bags to your car.
#20153
Never did I imagine such a thought would enter my head. But there it was, an epiphany: I could understand the allure of Florida. The weather is warm â€" OK, it’s hot â€" but what’s wrong with hot if you have a pool nearby and an air-conditioned condo? And unlike New York City, where you have to mortgage your soul to have a car, Florida is supremely car friendly. There’s lots of parking, so you can drive around, admittedly very slowly (given that some of the drivers keep under 30 mph), and always get a spot when you pull into one of those strip malls with shops full of things like T-shirts with Swarovski crystals. And there’s palm trees, making for a tropical feel but without the downside (i.e. malaria and jungles).
#20154
Lately, however, I’ve begun to understand where that generation was coming from. Just the other day, I was trying to get somewhere in New York City. The wind was whipping fiercely, a light but chill rain was falling, and no cab would pick me up â€" armies of them, passing me by, all with their not in service lights on. The subway was two avenues and three blocks away; it was rush hour; I had packages, uncomfortable shoes, and a jacket that wouldn’t button. That’s when I thought the unthinkable: “Wouldn’t it be nice to be in Florida?”
#20155
For their children â€" of which I count myself one â€" it was hard to understand. Florida seemed so unlike what we thought of as the center of the world: New York City. In fact, Florida was pretty much the anti-New York City. But that, for our parents, was the point. They grew up in New York and had had enough of it. They wanted peace and quiet, sunshine and poolside, canasta and golf. Florida was leisurely, pastel-colored, and sun-drenched, not fast, grubby, and overcast. New York was exciting, but they’d had enough of exciting.

Lifestyle, Culture and Arts / Retiring to Florida
July 27, 2013, 08:51:43 AM
By Paula Marantz Cohen

It used to be that people from my ethnicity (Jewish) and my geography (the Northeast) retired to Florida when they reached the age of 65. Sometimes, if they could afford it, they retired at 60 and gave themselves a few extra years in the sun. The East Coast of Florida, whose informal capital is Boca Raton, was the mecca for those who wanted to take it easy after years of hard labor. Most retirees were small merchants and entrepreneurs who’d risen early every morning and come home late every night in order to buy the split level in the suburbs and send their kids to college. Now, they could reap the rewards and lead the good life.

And I will stick sa sarili naming investigation," pahayag ni Gille.

GOING into the second half of his term, President Benigno Aquino III might want to take note of what Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma thinks he should do.

The president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) said Aquino’s job is far from being done as several matters continue to be wanting of his attention and solution.

“On their own end, may sinasabi sila na mga magandang nagagawa pero yung sa CBCP naman, may mga komentaryo na hindi naman ganyan lang dapat ang pagtingin,” said Palma.

Topping the prelate’s list is the review of the reproductive health (RH) law, which the Catholic Church has strongly opposed.

“Yung question ng RH law. Sabi nga natin talaga bang ito ang solusyon sa kahirapan? Hanggang kailan tayo maniniwala na kung babawasan natin yung tao, karamihan sa atin gaganda ang buhay,” said Palma.

He also said that the problem with the environment, particularly on the flooding woes, needs his attention.

“Kung noon bihira lang bumabaha ng malalim, ngayon nagiging rampant na” said Palma.

Finally, Palma said there is a need to review the goal of the economic development being aimed by the administration saying it should be a type that is inclusive.

“Sinasabi din ng CBCP na kung development, hindi lang basta mga gross and profit kundi yung talagang nadarama ng mahihirap. Does it cascade down to the poor?” said the CBCP chief.

Palma’s statement comes on the eve of the fourth State of the Nation Address (Sona) of Aquino on Monday. (HDT/Sunnex)
