The Lifesaver Bottle

What you saw yesterday in science fiction movies can become the reality of our days. The fans of the Dune series may see now something resembling the stillsuit and the rehydrator that took water from sweat, fecal matters, or urine.

The Life Saver water bottle is employed by the troops as a water sanitizer that can turn the dirtiest water into drinkable water in a matter of seconds. The bottle with a small self-contained filter system does not only eliminate common pathogens, like protozoa and bacteria, but also kills viruses, cleaning even water that has been infested by fecal matters. All particles larger than 15 nm were removed without using chemical compounds.

The bottle's inventor, Michael Pritchard, first got the idea of developing this type of water bottle after seeing the problems with the drinkable water faced by the victims of Hurricane Katrina and the 2004 tsunami in Asia, who remained for days out of any source of clean water and many died from drinking contaminated water, in conditions which were ideal for outbreaks of epidemics related to infested water, like cholera.

But Pritchard's invention could have multiple uses. After exhibiting the bottle at a defense conference in the UK, Pritchard sold all 1,000 of his £190 ($385, 280 Euro) bottles in less than four hours.

Defense experts said the most impressive trait of the model was the fact that its filter functioned for cleaning up to 4,000 or 6,000 liters before it had to be replaced and would be crucial for troops in contaminated areas or those scarce in drinkable water, as the Middle East, the theater of many operations.

Besides military applications, the new bottle could reach also the consumer market, as it could be used as an emergency gear, but for camping and travel as well.

A study made on wild chimps in the West African village of Bossou in the Republic of Guinea has found that males steal desirable fruits from local farms and orchards to get the best sex partners. "We believe the males may be using crop-raids as a way to advertise their prowess to other group-members, especially the opposite sex. Such daring behavior certainly seems to be an attractive trait and possessing a sought-after food item, such as papaya, appears to draw even more positive attention from the females." said lead researcher, Dr Kimberley Hockings from the University of Stirling’s Department of Psychology.

This research is the only one observing regular sharing of plant foods by unrelated wild chimps. "It is unusual behavior as even though the major part of chimpanzees’ diets consists of plant foods, wild plant food sharing (defined as an individual holding a food item but allowing another individual to consume part of that item) occurs infrequently. However, in chimpanzee communities that engage in hunting, meat is frequently used as a ‘social tool’ for nurturing alliances and social bonds.", said Hockings.

"This research shows that chimpanzees at Bossou use crop-raiding as an opportunity to obtain and share desirable foods, providing further insights into the evolutionary basis of human food sharing. In humans, the pursuit of certain foods is also strongly sex-biased; for example, it has been proposed that men in hunter-gatherer societies acquire large and risky-to-obtain food packages for social strategizing and to garner attention."


An adult male chimpanzee steals papaya fruit

Fruit-stealing males shared most of the loot with females of reproductive age; especially with a female (within the group) which is extremely attractive for the male chimps, taking part in the majority of consortships (where a chimpanzee couple retreats to the periphery of their community for the male to be able to receive exclusive access to mating). A consortship increases a male's chances of fathering the offspring, as otherwise, both males and females are highly promiscuous, in many cases a female mating with several males at a time.

"The male who shared the most food with this female engaged in more consortships with her and received more grooming from her than the other males, even the alpha male. Therefore the male chimpanzees appear to be ‘showing off’ and trading their forbidden fruit for other currencies, i.e. ‘food-for-sex and â€"grooming’ ", said Hockings.

Cultivated plant foods were shared much more frequently than wild plant foods at Bossou, even if getting them meant risky raiding crops, that induced anxiety in the males (rough scratching and other symptoms of anxiety), due to their exposed locations and the human presence.

What Launches Your Antibodies Against the Sperm? - Scientists have decoded a mechanism of the immune infertility

Contaminants, stress and other factors brought by modern life are blamed for the increasing rates of infertility, but few have heard about immune infertility, a quite common cause of couple sterility.

Immune infertility is amongst the 80 autoimmune disorders discovered so far and the best known are Multiple Sclerosis and Type 1 Diabetes. This reproductive disease installs in both men and women, causing their immune systems to attack sperm cells.

A recent research at the University of Virginia Health System has found a new human protein, radial spoke protein 44 (RSP44), because of which the immune system attacks sperm. When put in the blood, RSP44 made infertile men synthesize antisperm antibodies (ASA).

"We’ve spent several years looking for sperm molecules that evoke antibody responses in humans. The identification of RSP44 gives us additional insight into immune infertility and may prove useful in diagnosing the disorder in a subset of men. RSP44 will likely not be a dominant antigen in everyone." said Dr. John C. Herr, director of UVa’s Center for Research in Contraceptive and Reproductive Health.

RSP44 is encountered in all men, being located in the sperm tail at the middle of a structure called axoneme. The axoneme contains microtubules that determine the sperm movement. Humans of both genders have RSP44 in hair-like strands, called cilia in the respiratory ducts and bronchioles of their lungs, the ventricles of their brains and the lumens of their thyroid gland.
Until this discovery, scientists thought that ASA only attacked the surface of the sperm membrane.

"Because RSP44 is located in the heart of the axoneme, it doesn’t appear to be directly involved in ASA binding at the sperm membrane. Identifying RSP44 as an antigen in several individuals indicates it may serve as a useful biomarker of the anti-sperm response. There may be mechanisms underlying infertility that are yet to be discovered." said lead author Dr. Jagat Shetty.

Women experiencing immune infertility have ASA in their reproductive ducts, that kill the sperms by piling them and destroying their membranes. Antisperm antibodies also cover receptors that cause sperm-egg binding and fertilization. Up to 15 % of sterility cases in women are due to ASA. There are cases when ASA caused anaphylactic shock in women following insemination.

Immune infertility in men has several causes, like vasectomies. Following a vasectomy, the sperms that cannot be released outside are "digested" by ASA. ASA can persist for years in the bloodstream of vasectomized men even when they underwent the reversed procedure (vasovasostomy), causing decreased fertility. Therapies like sperm washing and intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection are used to treat patients suffering from this disease.

Body Type and Motion Reveal If You're Gay or Straight - A master status category

A gay/lesbian is not completely successful in hiding his/her sexuality, as a new research has found that body motion and body type give subtle clues on sexual orientation of a person, which can be detected relatively easy by casual observers.

"We already know that men and women are built differently and walk differently from each other and that casual observers use this information as clues in making a range of social judgments. Now we've found that casual observers can use gait and body shape to judge whether a stranger is gay or straight with a small but perceptible amount of accuracy." said lead author Kerri Johnson, UCLA assistant professor of communication studies.

Johnson, with a team at New York University and Texas A&M made measurements of the the hips, waists and shoulders of 8 men and 8 women, half of whom were homosexual and half heterosexual.

The subjects were put to walk on a treadmill for two minutes while a 3D motion-capture system similar to those employed in the movies to create animated characters from living models assessed the precise level of shoulder swagger and hip sway in their gaits.

The measurements revealed that the homosexual subjects tended to display body types (hourglass shape for men, tubular bodies for women) and body motions (hip-swaying for men, shoulder-swaggering for women) not very typical for their gender.
112 undergraduate observers were put to watch videos of the backsides of the subjects while walking at various speeds on the treadmill. They could assess the subjects' sexual orientation with an overall level of accuracy much higher than chance, even if they could not see the subjects' faces or details of their clothing.

The team discovered that the casual observers found it easier to assess the orientation of males than females; they correctly assigned men's sexual orientation in over 60 % of the cases, but women's assignment did not overcome pure chance.
Previous studies have revealed that casual observers can often detect with precision the sexual orientation based on scarce information. A 1999 Harvard research discovered that college students could assess the sexual orientation in 55 % of the cases just by looking at images of seated strangers.



Volunteers were filmed and analyzed as they walked on a treadmill for two minutes. Researchers noted that gay subjects tended to have more gender-incongruent body types than their straight counterparts (hourglass figures for men, tubular bodies for women)

"Studies like ours are raising questions about the value of the military's 'don't ask, don't tell' policy. If casual observers can determine sexual orientation with minimal information, then the value in concealing this information certainly appears questionable. Given that we all appear to be able to deduce this information to some degree with just a glance, more comprehensive policies may be required to protect gays against discrimination based on their sexual orientation." said Johnson.

It appears that sexual orientation is a "master status category", a trait that observers will notice and dictates all social interactions.

"Once you know a person's sexual orientation, the fact has consequences for all subsequent interactions, and our findings suggest that this category of information can be deduced from subtle clues in body movement," said Johnson.

A new research conducted by Standard Life revealed that one in seven persons who can't sleep prefer to surge the Internet instead of doing anything else. Old news, I would say, as it's well known the fact that nowadays, most people browse the Internet and spend important parts of their free time on the web. According to Web User News, the insomniacs prefer to check their email and browse the webpages as their favorite activities. "An online poll found that some emailers, presumably in a rage due to a lack of shut-eye, began sending terse replies to spam emails - an activity security experts would advise against, as it only serves to confirm that your email address is geniune," the same source added.

The one who says the Internet is changing our lives is right. There are numerous technologies out there that simply turn their fans into addicted users who spend days browsing them. Look at YouTube for example. Since it was acquired by the Mountain View company, YouTube grew up a lot and became the clear leader of the category with no powerful rival to challenge it. And this especially due to the users who uploaded an impressive amount of videos which obviously attracted new viewers.

Another example is represented by the gaming industry as multiple persons died because they wanted to unblock a certain level in a game. Take World of Warcraft for instance. It is quite an addictive name and it is currently played by millions of users who spend days and nights to improve their character.

As you can see, the Internet can also have a bad influence on many of us. And because this new report reveals that most of the insomniacs prefer to browse the Internet when they can't sleep, the matter is getting more serious.
