And last week, adto unta sa munisipyo. In both occasions wala siya motunga. Wala poy explanations. Kon ania pa lang gyud kamo diri sa Bohol, makahibalo gyud mo nga out of the winnable circle si Cesar. Lupigon siya sa machinery, kay ang ubang kandidato, like Chatto, lig-on na kaayo og mass base, kada barangay gyud. Cesar's winning in Bohol during the last elections for senator wala magpasabot nga modaug pud siya isip gobernador. Nahu'og man gud to nga, hala ibutang sa balota kay Bol-anon.

Makurat man pud ta nimo aduy, uy. Mokalit ra man kag Tinagalog.

Nag celebrate ang among banay og Father's Day ug belated Mother's day, ug mao kini ang among gipangaon: pansit bihon, crispy pata, chopsuey, pinakbet, fried chicken, tuna steak, sinuglaw (sinugbang baboy ug kinilaw nga tuna), gilled pork belly, ground pork giputos og dahon sa gabi ug gitunoan, bottomless iced tea, shakes.

Of course there are intelligent voters who cannot be swayed by money, pero mas bug-at gyud sa timbangan ang mapalit og kwarta. Namatud-an na kini in the last three eletions nga dia ko sa Bohol.

Hi Bennelyne,

I've met Lynn and your younger sister (unexpectedly) the other day and invited me for a refreshing Vita drink with a chat in one of the cafes at the City Square.

On your question whether I have plans for politics? As of this time, I don't have definite plans yet.  Though I've been hearing rumors in Anda that I might be running for Mayor as I enlisted or registered with Comelec as a voter for 2010.  Maybe some people speculated due to my affiliation with the community projects of some political figures in the province.

Mo apply unya kong consultant sa Mayor's Office, he he.

It was Koddi Prudente who told me about this thread. I met him at an arts council meeting in Tagbilaran lately, and he narrated to me his excitement of seeing this reunion dream being fulfilled through TubagBohol.com and of course with the unflinching assistance of Bulak.

I hope this heartwarming story will be duplicated a thousand times. All over the Philippines there are thousands of Boholanos who for decades have lost their roots in Bohol. Thank God, technology will bridge the past and the present.
I hope you can write about this, Mike, for national newspapers. Or better still, witness the act of reuniting.  A good article on TB's role in this case will certainly attract more Boholanos to know about and join TB. That will increase our rating from 4 to 10!

Actually, my Nanay is the Prudente in the family. She was from San Carlos City in Negros Occidental where I was born long time ago in the middle of sugarcane fields. Pit-os kaayo among kahimtang kaniadto (hangtud karon, he he). The family transferred to Bohol when I was about a year old, kay ang akong Tatay dili gusto nga mag Negros Slasher mi (ngalan ni sa NegOcc basketball team sa una, but in our case, kon wala mi mamalhin sa Bohol, tigtub-os og tubo). When my mother died five years later, wala na mi maka contact sa among mga uncles and aunts as well as my cousins, except one who is married to a Boholano and who gets a chance to visit us when she and her husband comes home in Dauis. The Prudentes kuno are from Pototan, Iloilo. And I was told by a teacher in college, whose mother is also a Prudente, that many of them migrated to Mindanao. Thanks daan Grazie, kon maka connect ka for us.

In 2006, Boholano Palanca award winner and La Salle professor Marjorie Evasco (of Maribojoc) authored “Ani: The Life and Art of Hermogena Borja Lungay, Boholano Painter”. The book is beautifully reviewed by Flaudette May V. Datuin (“Blossoms of Wisdom from a Turtle-Shaped Island”) in Ctrl + Pdf (Journal of Contemporary Art).  I had the privilege of attending the launching of the book at MetroCentre in Tagbilaran. How our eyes welled when it was time for Ma’am Nene to speak on her experiences as a mother, wife and artist.

Excerpts from Datuin’s review:

(In) . . . her home-island of Bohol, . . . (Lungay) is “committed to the lifelong practice of her art. She is of Bohol, in spirit and soul. This keen sense of place is not mere context for her art; it is the heart-source from which her visual imagination draws its living waters.”

A strong presence in Bohol today, Lungay is role model to new generations of Boholano artists. In her workshops, she not only teaches technique on how to paint well, but also how to live well. In one telling incident that took place in a gathering of Visayan artists, she sent a strong message: artists must learn how to strike a balance “between the need to survive in the world and the desire to serve one’s art.” When a male artist admonished young participants that “they shouldn’t get stuck with painting flowers and fruits,” the kind which collectors prefer, she countered: “Do not forget how to paint your flowers and fruits. These will help you survive in the world. But take care to paint each one very well.”

And these are the lines that I can remember:

"Ligid, ligid . . .  pak!"  (The children were playing mudballs, nagpa contest kon kang kinsang bola ang mapusgay inig bangga.)

"Apil diri Inday. Inday apil diri." ( A reading and comprehension exercise.

"Tiring-ting-ting! . . . Tiring-ting-ting! Pak! Pak! Pak! . . . Pak! Pak! Pak!" (This is that part of the reading exercise book nga ang setting nagtapok ang banay human sa panihapon, unya nag program-program, which was what our family also did sa una especially kon magpasiga si Tatay og Petromax bisan kon dili manu'o sa dagat.)

Paging taga CDO ug Bukidnon. This species of kahoy baligya na sa public market didto sa Malaybalay.

I am very very happy for Luisa, I could almost cry. You see, Nanay died when I was only 6 and I still had a younger brother and sister. So wala gyud koy fond memories niya kay nag-atiman man siya og mga gamay.  But that did not deter me from giving my best shot in whatever I was involved in.

I would particularly advocate for changes in the language policy, nga unta hatagan og pagtagad ang pagpalambo sa mga regional languages aron dili mawala sa dayon. Maluoy ko sa mga beginners karon sa elementary kay gawas nga magkalisud pa sila sa subject (for example, Science), maglisud pa pud sila sa language kay Tinagalog man. That's two concerns in one classroom setting. Unlike sa una nga ang mga subjects sa Grade 1 and 2 were taught in the mother tongue, which resulted in better comprehension. UNICEF declared last year that the mother tongue should be used in teaching beginners as this will give them a chance to learn more and fast.

The Lungays, particularly the family of UP-educated Ma'am Nene Borja Lungay, are respected artists in Bohol. Ma'am Nene graduated with honors at the UP College of Fine Arts. Ka-batch niya ang national artist in visual arts nga si Jose Joya. Her children include Nelia (painter, sculptor and women's rights advocate) and Europe-based Gene . Another guy, Brydon, is a kayak maker. That's sculpture, too, with fiberglass as medium. I am certain that Fr. Chicogon and these Lungays are very much related as their roots are in Catigbian and Balilihan.

Music and Video / Re: Karen Carpenter "Resurrected"
June 20, 2009, 03:59:43 AM
More than a year ago, Richard Carpenter also met up with our very own Claire de la Fuente after some referrals. After hearing Claire's voice, Richard was impressed. What followed was a Richard-Claire collaboration that resulted in an album produced in the US that included compositions of Boholano Jimmy Borja. (Bisa'g asa maka saliut-ut gyud ang Bol-anon!). You can google for "Claire de la Fuente Richard Carpenter" for more details. You can also post Claire's music video "Something in Your Eyes" featuring Richard himself.  Meanwhile, you can read the backgrounder below.

CLAIRE  DELA  FUENTE  TO  RECORD  CARPENTER  SPECIAL  SONG

MANILA, DECEMBER 7, 2007 (STAR) FUNFARE By Ricardo F. Lo - It’s a song waiting to be sung — and recorded —, composed by no less than Richard Carpenter for his sister Karen back in the ’80s after she died due to complications of anorexia. Almost two decades later, Richard has found the perfect singer for what may be his best and most moving tribute to Karen with whom he partnered in many hit songs that have been remade by other artists and remained popular up to now (among them We’ve Only Just Begun, Yesterday Once More, Rainy Days and Mondays).

The lucky singer? Yes, our very own Claire dela Fuente who is known as the Karen Carpenter of the Philippines because of “very Karen Carpenter” voice which at once became obvious when she sang the Hope cigaret jingle in the early ’80s when the Carpenters were at the peak of their short-lived reign as pop stars.

The song is called Something In Your Eyes which Richard has been keeping while waiting for the right alto to sing it. Many tried but none of them got Richard’s nod — until Claire came along and, I could imagine Richard exclaiming, “Eureka!”

“I just learned that Richard loves alto women,” Claire told Funfare in an exclusive phone interview a few hours after she personally met Richard last Monday, Dec. 3, at his home in North Ranch Club, Thousand Oaks, L.A. “It was during our meeting that I also learned na maraming nag-try kumanta n’ung song, pero walang nagustuhan si Richard.”

You may be wondering: How did Claire get wind of the song and eventually bag the assignment?

As Claire herself told Funfare, it was US record producer Christian de Walden who was instrumental in all this. De Walden is the same guy who produced for Viva Records some songs, including Magkasuyo Buong Gabi and who acted as distributor of Freddie Aguilar’s Anak in the international market. It was Viva boss Vic del Rosario Jr. who introduced Claire to De Walden who then introduced Claire to Pamela Phillips Oland, lyricist of the Carpenters. To make a long story short, Oland heard Claire sing and she was impressed. That was a few months ago. Then, Claire secretly flew to L.A. to do a demo-tape of Something In Your Eyes. She brought the demo tape with her when she — together with De Walden, Oland and Claire’s lawyer Teresita Marbibi — dropped by Richard’s house for a “Hi-hello!” visit that extended to more than 45 minutes!

“We arrived at exactly 12 noon that day,” said Claire. “We were told that Richard was going to a tennis match at 12:30. True enough, when we arrived, Richard was in his tennis outfit and he apologized for it. His wife was also there. At first, he was a bit shy but very accommodating. Then, he invited us to his recording room at the basement where he listened to the demo tape. I noticed that medyo tinitimpla-timpla niya ‘yung demo tape while he was listening to it intently.”

Seated beside Richard, Claire shed tears while also listening to the demo tape. “I need some tissue,” Claire recalled herself saying. Richard promptly ran upstairs and came back with a box of tissue paper and handed it to Claire.

“It’s beautiful!” said Richard. “It’s going to be a hit!”

To be recorded by Christian de Walden for Viva Records, Something In Your Eyes will be the carrier single of Claire’s album which will be recorded in the US. The album will also carry four original Tagalog songs composed by Jimmy Borja and STAR columnist Baby Gil. Claire will be back from L.A. next week and will go back early next year to start recording.

The good news is that Richard Carpenter might fly to the Philippines to grace the album’s release in March next year.

These three towns can become an agribusiness-based metro area in the future.

Gawas nga naay sprayer nga dagko, naa pud silay soil aerator. Mga tubo or pipe nga binuslotan, ilubong sa yuta, then bombahan og hangin. I remember your kind of farm as similar to the farms I saw in Iowa many years back while I was studying at Iowa State U. Gipapili ming mga students kon asa mi nga klase sa farm mag Labor Day weekend. I chose the small farm. Tiaw bay pagkadaku sa ilang small farm, as far as your eyes can see jud ang corn ug soybeans. Pulipulihon lang og tanom kay ang legumes, like soybeans, mo-fix man og atmospheric nitrogen in the soil which is essential to plant growth. Corn needs nitrogen man in huge amounts. Kanang Illinois daghan pud nag kamote. In fact, ang Illinois State U maoy leading institute in sweetpotato breeding.

Here's an official press release from the camp of Chito Castillo, member of the 1971 Constitutional Convention

Former ConCon delegate lambasts ConAss

SCHEMING, DECEITFUL, SHAMEFUL is how Natalio “Chito” Castillo Jr., former delegate to the 1971 Constitutional Convention (ConCon), describes the act of Congress whose members loyal to Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo approved last week in record time a resolution pushing for a constituent assembly (ConAss) that will amend the 1987 constitution.

The move to change the fundamental law of the land was included in Arroyo’s campaign platform during the 2004 elections and was considered as a high priority. Immediately after her victory the president issued Executive Order No. 453 creating a consultative commission whose task was to propose the "necessary" revisions on the charter.

After about a year of consultations, the commission came up with proposals that included, among others, a shift to a unicameral parliamentary form of government.  This has been met with storms of protest from various sectors.  As a matter of record, then Speaker Jose de Venecia, alarmed by the enormity of such public outrage, announced in Malacañang that the House of Representatives will no longer pursue ChaCha.

Subsequent turn of events, however, prove that the much abhorred ChaCha is not dead. It has been resurrected by scheming members of Congress whose terms of office will end in 2010.  Majority of the Filipinos, however, are opposed to any amendment of the constitution claiming that these cunning legislators connived for the passing of the ConAss resolution.

Having similar sentiment as that of countless Arroyo critics, Castillo warns that in countries where a unicameral parliamentary system is adopted there are no term limits of elected officials.  Thus, what he describes as the indecent haste by which the president’s minions passed House Resolution 1109 last Tuesday will pave the way for Charter Change (ChaCha) the primary aim of which is to lift the term limits of incumbent officials, specifically that of the president.

The feisty defender of the constitution condemns the insistence of the officials of the Arroyo administration to push for ChaCha. “They do everything in their power to maliciously and immorally extend their positions in government,” he states.

Arroyo has visited her district in Pampanga at least 16 times since January of this year to, according to her critics, ensure her election in 2010 as assemblyman under the amended constitution and to be elected as prime minister by her bootlickers in Parliament. Castillo views this as a ploy that will allow her to remain in control of the reins of government and continue to evade prosecution for the reported scams hounding her administration.

Passing the ConAss resolution in just one day and half-a-night is, according to Castillo, an insult to the intellect of the majority of Filipinos who strongly believe that a ready-made version of a new constitution is, at any time, ready to be shoved to the public in a plebiscite before the scheduled 2010 elections.

“Why force the issue?” Castillo remarked, citing that past and current surveys reveal that a good three-fourths of the Filipinos are against changing the constitution.

As regards economic development, the former ConCon delegate asserts that ChaCha will not immediately nor for the next ten to 15 years eradicate poverty and hunger which most of our brother Filipinos are mired in today.  According to him, amending the constitution will not build 40,000 school buildings nor generate enough jobs for the burgeoning number of unemployed college graduates. Above all, it will not give dignity back to the long-abandoned farmers and fisherfolks.

Castillo then appeals to the three congressmen of Bohol to convince Arroyo, just this once and for the higher interest of the majority of the Filipino people, to reconsider the very unpopular move that is ChaCha.

“Our representatives in Congress should persuade their president to leave ChaCha to the next administration and abandon this road to perdition or they themselves will face the wrath of an angry constituency,” he stresses.

A son of Natalio Sr., former congressman and executive secretary of Pres. Carlos P. Garcia, Castillo also appeals to all Boholanos to stand up and be counted at this point in time more than ever in the past to stop the president and her political allies from “gang-raping” the constitution after having filched the national coffers through their reported scams and shady deals.

“We should not forever be deceived and muted like clowns seemingly enjoying the mockery done to our revered constitution,” Castillo advises his “paisanos”.

Lastly, the former ConCon delegate calls on every Boholano to pray for his country that it be spared from a dreadful catastrophe should the present leadership insists on the folly to extend the terms in office of elected government officials.

Mariano Sumatra of Loon town went with a priest to Manila (to study perhaps) and surfaced in Mindanao as a pro-Katipunan organizer. He went back to Bohol and settled in Biabas, Guindulman where he started a community that used its own alphabet, signs and languages reportedly to continue his advocacy and evade suspecting authorities. He introduced a communal system of agriculture with him providing the inputs and the farmers giving back to him a portion of their harvest, thus he became a "datahan", someone to whom one makes a "data", or installment payment. While the Eskayas could be considered as a tribe, this may be as far only as their unique social, economic and learning systems are concerned. If we consider race, they do not belong to one other than ours. A lot of research and "scholarly" works have been done on Eskaya, unya ingon lang diay niini ka yano ang iyang sugilanon.

While in Biabas, Anoy frequently visited his hometown and even convinced some of his friends and relatives to join him in Biabas.  This may explain why surnames that are common in Loon (most if not all are in Spanish) are carried by some households in Guindulman and in Duero, where another Eskaya community was established.  The many Datahans and Sumatras in Bohol are, therefore, blood relatives.

Excluded in this list are those priests who are sent for further studies elsewhere including abroad, and those who are at the Seminario Mayor de San Carlos, like Fr. Aloysius L. She should also visit Cabilao Island, which has received the same distinction as one of the best dive sites in the world. Mas extensive ang diving areas. So far, in the Philippines, sa Cabilao pa na sight ang pygmy seahorse, which is endemic to Southeast Asia.

What about if a man has mole(s) in around his genitalia region? What is the meaning for that?

A few towns also had caruajes.
