Hurricane Dorian strengthened into a Category 4 storm on Friday night with 145 mph winds, but the Saturday morning forecast shows Florida may be spared a direct hit.

The projected path by the National Hurricane Center as of its 5 a.m. forecast showed the storm strafing the northern Bahamas Sunday and Monday, but then taking a sharp right so the center of the storm doesn't make Florida landfall.

The state's east coast from Fort Lauderdale up to Cape Canaveral and inland to Orlando are still within the three-day cone of uncertainty, though. The five-day projection includes even more of the state, but the consensus path now has the storm headed for landfall near the South Carolina and Georgia border.

Hurricane Dorian cone of uncertainty as of 5 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, 2019. (National Hurricane Center/National Hurricane Center)
The path has shifted several times since Thursday with projected landfalls suggesting it would slam into Florida as far south as West Palm Beach and as far north as Flagler Beach. Its path all day Friday had it targeting Orlando, but the various computer models kept shifting the path farther east.

The hurricane center said a hurricane watch may be issued for parts of Florida later today.

Hurricane-force winds extend out 30 miles from the storm's center with tropical storm-force winds extending out 105 miles. The current forecast has the center of the storm parked off Florida's coast still as a Category 4 hurricane with 130 mph winds near Brevard County by Tuesday morning. It is then projected to head more north skirting Florida's coast and diminish speed, but still a dangerous Category 3 level hurricane with 125 mph winds by Wednesday morning near St. Augustine.

The state will begin to feel tropical storm-force winds, though, as early as midday Sunday with Orlando projected to feel those winds by Sunday night.

"Life-threatening storm surge and devastating hurricane-force winds are still possible along portions of the Florida east coast by the early to middle part of next week, but since Dorian is forecast to slow down and turn northward near the coast, it is too soon to determine when or where the highest surge and winds will occur," the NHC said.

The expected arrival of the storm is now on the tail end of Labor Day weekend as its forward speed has slowed, but Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said Friday morning that is good and bad news.

"Floridians need to be prepared," DeSantis said. "The bad news of the storm going slower is that that could potentially have some negative impacts once it reaches landfall, but you do have time before it reaches to prepare if you have not done so."

Orlando International Airport announced it will cease commercial flight operations on at 2 a.m. Monday. Passengers should check with individual airlines for flight information and schedules.

"Hurricane Dorian has strengthened and slowed. Our plan currently is to run full operations through Sunday," said Phil Brown, CEO of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority in a press release. "We don't know exactly where Dorian is going but we do know that it will have a significant impact on the entire state of Florida. So in order to allow the airport's 25,000 employees time to secure their homes and families we feel it is prudent to cease operations in a timely fashion."

SunRail said it was suspending service all of next week.

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer predicted there were be thousands of downed trees and localized flooding in the city if the storm is as bad as predicted. The City of Orlando also will be opening city parking garages for people to put their cars in a secure environment, although he didn't specify a time they would open.

Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings said the county is prepared for whatever Dorian brings.

"It's showtime," Demings said. "We're ready."

Homes in the county's barrier islands and other flood-prone areas and residents living in manufactured or mobile homes are told to leave the area 8 a.m. Sunday, Sheriff Wayne Ivey said in a video posted to Facebook.

DeSantis also warned of power outages and said utility companies were pre-positioning workers to restore electricity for customers after Dorian passes.

The Orlando Utilities Commission has tripled its resources, with help coming from Nebraska, Michigan and Missouri, said Jenise Osani, a spokeswoman for the utility.

Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody has activated the state's price gouging hotline, giving residents a way to report businesses violating the law by charging too much for lodging and goods during Hurricane Dorian. Moody said gouging could be reported by (866) 966-7226 or online at myfloridalegal.com

The threat of winds in Orlando has prompted companies Lime and HOPR to begin removing their fleets of bicycles that are strewn across the city.

The path of the storm has coastal concerns making moves including Port Canaveral on alert and cruise lines shifting ships and changing itineraries. Also, major airlines began allowing travelers to change their reservations without a fee.

The Hurricane Center also began tracking a tropical wave off the coast of Africa that as of 2 a.m. Saturday had a 10 percent chance of tropical system formation in the next 48 hours, and 50 percent chance in the next five days. If it forms, it will be the seventh tropical depression of the 2019 Atlantic hurricane season. If it grows into a named storm, it would become Tropical Storm Fernand. The hurricane center was also tracking a storm in the southern Gulf of Mexico given a 10 percent chance of tropical system formation in the next 48 hours, and 20 percent chance in the next five days.

Hurricane Dorian could be worst storm to hit Central Florida in three decades if current track holds, meteorologist says
Florida's governor declared a state of emergency as Hurricane Dorian is forecast to be a Category 3 storm at landfall this weekend.

Rapide E will be Aston Martin's first fully electric vehicle. The 612-horsepower car can reach a top speed of 155 mph and can go zero-to-60 mph in four seconds.

The $330,000 car has a range of around 200 miles and can be fully charged in three hours in ideal conditions.

Only 155 units of the Rapide E will be made available with deliveries starting in 2020. One of them may be driven by Daniel Craig in the next James Bond film, according to British media reports.

Or so it seems
One life for yourself
And one for your dreams

You drift through the years
And life seems tame
'Til one dream appears
And Love is its name

And love is a stranger
Who'll beckon you on
Don't think of the danger
Or the stranger is gone

This dream is for you
So pay the price
Make one dream come true
You only live twice

And love is a stranger
Who'll beckon you on
Don't think of the danger

You Only Live Twice (1967)

After the success of Thunderball, Eon radically shifted the series in a new direction with You Only Live Twice, dropping Ian Fleming's story completely and retaining the Japanese locations and the character names. Instead the producers brought in Roald Dahl to write the screenplay.

The film sees SPECTRE meddling in the space race between the United States and USSR going on at the time. It was released 18 months before Apollo 8 became the first manned spacecraft to orbit the Moon and a two full years before the Apollo 11 Moon landing.

With Sean Connery announcing the film as his last appearance as 007 the pressure was really on the producers; Sean Connery WAS James Bond. How could the series continue without him?
When an American spacecraft disappears from orbit the United states immediate suspects the Soviet Union. However, since the British tracked the craft to the Sea of Japan they decide to dispatch James Bond to Tokyo to investigate.

James Bond, assisted by Tiger Tanaka, as well as Bond girls Aki and Kissy, uncovers a plot by SPECTRE to start World War III by hijacking American and Russian spacecraft, while making it look like the work of the other side. 007 must prevent Blofeld's plan before it is too late.

You Only Live Twice marks a turning point in the series, as it is the first James Bond film that was not based on an Ian Fleming story.

While Fleming's novel of the same name is set in Japan and features Blofeld, little else remains apart from the characters Tiger Tanaka and Dikko Henderson – and while he is a colourful character in the book, Henderson is completely wasted in the film.

It is notable that the same basic story was reused in The Spy Who Love Me and slightly less obviously in Moonraker, both with Roger Moore.

"To All The Girls I've Loved Before"

To all the girls I've loved before
Who travelled in and out my door
I'm glad they came along
I dedicate this song
To all the girls I've loved before

To all the girls I once caressed
And may I say I've held the best
For helping me to grow
I owe a lot I know
To all the girls I've loved before

The winds of change are always blowing
And every time I try to stay
The winds of change continue blowing
And they just carry me away

To all the girls who shared my life
Who now are someone else's wives
I'm glad they came along
I dedicate this song
To all the girls I've loved before

To all the girls who cared for me
Who filled my nights with ecstasy
They live within my heart
I'll always be a part
Of all the girls I've loved before

The winds of change are always blowing
And every time I try to stay
The winds of change continue blowing
And they just carry me away

To all the girls we've loved before
Who travelled in and out our doors
We're glad they came along
We dedicate this song
To all the girls we've loved before

To all the girls we've loved before
Who travelled in and out our doors
We're glad they came along
We dedicate this song
To all the girls we've loved before

Thunderball (1965)

Where Goldfinger went big, Thunderball went bigger. Back came the DB5 for the pre-title sequence as well as a Bell-Textron jet pack in this story of SPECTRE holding the West to ransom after hijacking a Vulcan bomber loaded with two atomic bombs; again the series taps into the threat of vaporisation by nuclear weapons.

Filmed largely in The Bahamas, the underwater scenes are sometimes criticised for slowing the film down and making it difficult to follow, but it has a great John Barry score and Sean Connery is in fine form as 007.

When two atomic bombs are stolen by SPECTRE  countdown begins to locate them before time is up; if a ransom is not paid then the warheads will be used against western targets and all available agents are scrambled into action.

James Bond is sent to the Bahamas after spotting a link between pilot Francois Derval and his sister, Domino, who is in Nassau with her "guardian" Emilio Largo.

With Felix Leiter to assist him, Bond finds the Vulcan bomber on which the bombs were carried hidden on the sea bed; however, there is no trace of the bombs themselves which the atomic bombs were carried.

Goldfinger (1964)

In many ways the quintessential James Bond movie, in introducing the gadget-packed Aston Martin DB5 Goldfinger began to shift the series away from Ian Fleming's vision of James Bond. It also turned generations of boys that followed into avid collectors.

The film improves on the book substantially by making a small but important change to the villain's scheme. It also features one of the most memorable Bond girls in the shape of Pussy Galore and a pre-title sequence to which few of the films that followed have even come close in equalling. Whether or not Goldfinger is the best film in the series is a moot point. Without a doubt though, it is the most iconic Bond film

James Bond is sent to investigate the smuggling operation of gold magnate Auric Goldfinger.

After first encountering him in Miami, Bond arranges a "chance" meeting at Goldfinger's golf club, where they play a high stakes round for a gold bar during which Goldfinger and his henchman cheat.

Trailing the millionaire to Switzerland in his Aston Martin DB5, 007 finds out how his smuggling operation works; however, after hearing about Operation Grand Slam he is captured.

Sparing his life at the last minute, Bond awakes on Goldfinger's private jet on the way to Kentucky where he owns a stud farm. Here he witnesses a meeting with a number of criminal gangs who have provided materials for to Goldfinger and overhears the details of Operation Grand Slam; to irradiate America's gold supply at Fort Knox thereby increasing the value of his own gold and helping the Chinese.

James Bond must try and foil Operation Grand Slam as Goldfinger's plan swings into action.

Goldfinger is perhaps the quintessential James Bond film, with the right balance of plot, girls, villain, henchman and, in the Aston Martin DB5, gadgets. It is also, notably, the only Bond film based on an Ian Fleming novel that improves on the original story.

When Dr No proved to be a hit Eon Productions quickly followed it up with From Russia With Love, considered by Fleming to be his best work. However, rather than the Cold War plot pitting the Russians and SMERSH against 007 the screenplay features SPECTRE play the Russians against MI6 in order to assassinate 007 and get hold of the Lektor code machine.

The second Bond film makes great use of the location work in Istanbul, as well as the scenes on board the Orient Express as Bond, Tania and Kerim flee with the Lektor. Bond's claustrophobic fight with Red Grant, highlighted by Peter Hunt's groundbreaking editing, has rarely been equalled in the series.

An assassin pulls a length of wire from his watch and silently approaches James Bond from behind. Looping the wire around Bond's neck, the assassin pulls it tight and holds it there until Bond gasps his last breath.

From Russia With Love is the first James Bond film to feature the now obligatory pre-title sequence, and although the murdered man is immediately revealed to be wearing a mask of 007, the short sequence is atmospheric and full of suspense. Since James Bond does not appear until much later in the plot, this device must have been designed to introduce Sean Connery into the story much sooner than he would have otherwise done.

Differing only slightly (but vitally) from the Fleming story, From Russia With Love is probably the only Bond film not to have at its finale a huge exploding set. Instead of a 007-by-numbers world domination theme, the film concerns a plot by SPECTRE (SMERSH in the book) to assassinate Bond in compromising circumstances and at the same time obtain a Russian cipher machine in order to sell it back to the Russians.

From Russia With Love is the first film to feature the much loved Desmond Llewellyn (introduced by M as 'The Equipment Officer' from 'Q-Branch' and billed as Boothroyd in the credits) and follows the same structure as the book, with the beginning of the film devoted to planning the assassination, and although this makes the first half a little slow at times, the local colour provided by the locations and characters fleshes out the story to ultimately make it much more believable than most of the films.

This highlights one of the weaknesses of the film series from the 1970s onwards, when Fleming's worldly sophistication was replaced almost entirely by a thin veneer of glamour and scenes like the gypsy camp, which is effectively used to provide local colour while driving the plot forward, have been replaced by the anonymity of the five star hotel and the needless action scene. With few gadgets, Bond has to rely upon his wits and during a gun flight at the gypsy camp he stands amid the confusion not knowing what to do, far from the decisive agent we see in most of the films.

By the time the story has progressed to the Orient Express the film is full of suspense and while locked in a sleeping compartment with SPECTRE assassin 'Red' Grant, Bond is force to fight to the death in a terrifyingly claustrophobic sequence accompanied by the rhythmic knock of the rails in the background.

At times some of the acting from supporting characters is a little weak, and whenever Kerim, the head of the Istanbul MI6 station, fires a gun he snatches at the trigger so that the whole weapon wobbles impossibly, but overall the cast play the roles well and unlike some of the series the film is coherent due to its reliance on Ian Fleming's plot. With none of the over the top gadgets, plots and pyrotechnics that have become so closely associated with James Bond, From Russia With Love remains one of the best of the series.

Thanks a lot, Gwyneth.

A Canadian woman who tried out a controversial steaming procedure once favored by GOOP guru Gwyneth Paltrow was left with severe second-degree burns on her vagina.

The case was reported in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Canada, with lead author Dr. Magali Robert explaining that even though vaginal steaming has long been used in some Asian and African cultures, doctors should be aware of the risks of the procedure.

The 62-year-old woman's traditional Chinese doctor advised her to mix an herbal medicine blend in a pan of boiling water and sit over it for 20 minutes. The woman told her doctors she did this twice, then sought a second opinion — at which point doctors found she had sustained the second-degree burns.

Vaginal steaming usually involves squatting over a pot of steam infused with herbs as an alleged way of reducing vaginal prolapse, relieving cramps or bringing about other vague "cleansing" benefits.

In 2015, Paltrow's lifestyle website GOOP raved about the procedure at a spa in Los Angeles. "This is a thousands-of-years-old practice in Korean spas," she told Fast Company.

Since then, the procedure has become startlingly popular — even internet best friend Chrissy Teigen has tried it out.

However, even though we shouldn't have to say this, vaginal steaming is not advisable. Dr. Jennifer Wider told Women's Health that the supposed benefits of vaginal steaming haven't been scientifically proven and, like our poor Canadian friend, could result in painful burns.

"The vaginal area is sensitive and these types of burns can be painful and difficult to treat," says Wider.

Seriously, do not try this at home.

In 1961 Albert R "Cubby" Broccoli found that Harry Saltzman had a six-month option to film the James Bond novels and tried to buy him out. But when Saltzman refused they teamed up instead and created Eon Productions to put 007 on the big screen.

Dr No remains a fairly faithful adaptation  of the novel but the screenwriters added a number of scenes. They also added Felix Leiter, who did not appear in the book. But while many of the classic Bond elements were introduced, the first Bond film lacks a John Barry score. Apart from the James Bond Theme the music is largely unmemorable.

Dr No is often overlooked, but it sets many of the elements in place for the later James Bond movies and Ursula Andress' appearance on the beach is now an iconic screen moment. Although it features the James Bond Theme, one notable thing lacking is the "Bond sound", first introduced by John Barry in From Russia With Love

Dr No (1962)

Following the disappearance of the head of the local secret service station in Jamaica and his assistant, M send James Bond to investigate. Bond quickly teams up with the CIA's Felix Leiter and with the help of the CIA man and his local hand, Quarrel, Bond follows up a series of leads.
His investigations point him towards Crab Key, home to the enigmatic Dr No, and he and Quarrel set sail at night to investigate. After arriving, Bond awakes to find a bikini-clad girl collecting shells on the beach.

It turns out that Honey Ryder also sailed overnight, but alerted by the sail on her dinghy, Dr No sends a motor patrol boat to deal with the trespassers. Disappearing into the mangrove swamp, the three come face to face with a march buggy armed with a flame-thrower dressed up to look like a dragon.

After seeing Quarrel being scorched to death, Bond and Honey are taken to Dr No's base after surrendering, where the two are surprised to find they have been expected in what appears to be some kind of luxury clinic. After dinner with the Doctor, during which he reveals that he has been interfering with American missile tests on behalf of SPECTRE, Bond is taken to a cell.

Escaping though a ventilation shaft, Bond tracks Dr No down to his laboratory and kills him. While a chain of gigantic explosions begins to rock the complex all around, Bond rescues Honey, and they make their escape from the island in a boat.

Connery's hard edge, flawless delivery of one liners, a simple plot and absence of gadgets all work in the film's favour and with a freshness that has evaded the series since Goldfinger, Dr No remains one of the best Bond films.

It's hard to imagine a world without the James Bond films, which have been with us since Dr No hit the big screen in 1962.

The impact of Dr No on cinema audiences of the time was dramatic. There had never been anything like it before. It catapulted Sean Connery to fame and introduced us to an exciting and, for many, unimaginably sophisticated world.

It took James Bond from being a successful series of books to an unprecedented worldwide phenomenon, hitting its peak in the mid-1960s.

The actor may change. The style of each film reflects the time in which it was made. But more than 50 years later we still eagerly await each new instalment in the series.

USA and Canada / America Weeps for the Fallen
August 11, 2019, 04:22:24 AM
Hi Rene,

America weeps for the fallen," said President Trump in his address to the nation on Monday morning, after the weekend shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio.

Eloquent, elegant.

That's quite a word, "weep." It's old Middle English. It means to cry, of course; but more than that, to mourn and lament over a deep, painful loss.

At least, the line resonated with me. I'm busy, probably just like you. I have things happening in life and business, probably just like you. But pause for a moment, take a breath. It's so sad.

And ponder the cruelty of fate. You weren't there? Not injured? Hey... It could've been you. So maybe mutter something like... What. The. Hell.  Or words to that effect.

An awful person – two awful people last weekend; both deeply, profoundly troubled – killed a group of (mostly) strangers. (Note: the Dayton guy killed his sister! Ugh.) It was indiscriminate.

Psychiatrists tell us that people who don't value their own life tend not to value the lives of others.

In other words, someone who's already in a very dark room drags us all in there with him.

And it's pretty much always a "him." For over half a century, almost every mass-killer in the U.S. has been male. (Only one female.)

This kind of mass-killing has happened so many times that there's even a profile. Alienated. Disassociated. Childhood trauma. Bad parenting; almost always an absent father. Lack of socialization. Outcast. Radicalized. Lone wolf. Mentally ill. Psychotropic drugs, in many instances.

In recent decades, add in that people are conditioned to violence through a lifetime of routine media horror, and desensitized to death by now-common video games. Spun-up by Internet lures, and social media click-bait. As my friend Jim Kunstler wrote, "this is exactly what you get in a culture where anything goes and nothing matters."

We live in a nation of 330 million people. If one-one-hundredth of one percent are truly, deeply troubled – perhaps even certifiably nuts – that's 33,000 potentially very dangerous people out there. At some point, some people are wound so tight, they simply snap...

So, yes... weep for the fallen; and weep for what this whole thing says about our country.

"This whole thing?" You probably know what I mean... The personal loss, and the follow-on political theater.

Because when will the politicians get through with this? Well, here's the calculus. Two horrible, awful, total strangers committed mass-murder, and we'll all lose our freedoms because of it.
Saturday, I boarded an airplane in Vancouver. Dutifully, per federal air regulations, I shut off my smart phone. Five hours later, I landed in Detroit. The El Paso news was burning the wires.

By the time I landed in Pittsburgh, airport security was unusually tight. I walked out past the security perimeter, into the non-TSA spaces where the place was crawling with police officers wearing body armor, carrying shotguns and M-16s.

And the next day, the morning news was from Dayton. Two mass-shootings in less than 24 hours. Unbelievable...

When I first saw the news about El Paso, I had a flashback.

I've been inside that Walmart. It was in 2011. I flew to El Paso and met up with Agora Financial colleague Matt Insley. We went on a road trip to visit a series of mining projects in West Texas and New Mexico.

At El Paso International, Matt and I rented a car. We drove to the Walmart just south of the airport, off Interstate-10.

Inside Walmart, we bought a couple of regional maps, cold drinks and a few odds and ends to tide us over for the next couple of days in the field.

I recall that the Walmart was crowded, much of the clientele was Hispanic, and most signage was in spanish.

I turned to Matt and remarked, "Looks like we're in a serious border town."

A casual comment, but Spanish signage in a West Texas store was nothing new to me. Long ago, in the late 1970s, I worked in that part of the world as a geologist for the old Gulf Oil Company, now part of Chevron.

When you spend time in the "Texican" oil patch, and hang out amongst oil workers, you realize that the border isn't really a solid line, as lines go. Indeed, you get a feel for how the cultures of Mexico and Texas meet and mix.

The border between the U.S. and Mexico has long been fluid; at least, socially fluid. There are lines on maps. There's fencing along the border; even a "wall" in places. People carry different kinds of driver's licenses.

But the actual border is more like a mixing zone. It's similar to how two great rivers merge and combine their waters. Two different "upstream" channels join, to yield a new and different chemistry as they flow downstream. It's a force of nature.

The weekend news brought other flashbacks, too.

I remember the first time I heard about a mass shooting. I was ten years old; it was August 1966. A very troubled man – Charles Whitmore, with a large tumor squeezing his brain – climbed a tower and shot up the University of Texas.

Whitmore's episode was the worst mass-shooting in U.S. history until the massacre at San Ysidro, California in July 1984. I was in the Navy, stationed nearby in San Diego; but deployed offshore at the time. Still, that shootout left an impression. You may not be safe, even buying a hamburger at McDonalds.

In October 1991, San Ysidro was surpassed by the Luby's Restaurant massacre in Killeen, Texas. I was in the Middle East, just after Desert Storm. I heard the news and remember thinking... I'm over here, and back home people are shooting up restaurants.

Then there was Columbine, Colorado; April 1999. Again, I was far away in Bahrain when the news hit. I recall being in a room full of Navy SEALs. The discussion turned to being deployed on the other side of the world, defending so-called "American interests" while at home the country was falling apart.

Of course, there have been many other locales; other mass-shootings. Several come to mind (and the list is truly far longer than I can lay out here). Virginia Tech, April 2007. Fort Hood, November 2009. Aurora, Colorado, July 2012. Newtown, Connecticut, December 2012. San Bernardino, December 2015. Orlando, June 2016. Las Vegas, October 2017. Pittsburgh, October 2018.

Different people, different stories and motives. But definitely lone wolf-types. Sick people. Radicalized; and in some instances, sick angles on religion. I hold no medical license, but I'll opine that all of the shooters were mentally ill.

After each event, politicians made hay while looking for scapegoats. They called for more laws, more regulation. Blame the gun, of course... And that creates an instant political conflict with a fundamental right; 2nd Amendment.

Face it. Guns are not just about duck hunting. The "gun issue" is a critical political right, forged in the Revolutionary War and encased in the Constitution at about the time of the Whiskey Rebellion.

Somehow or other, though, the idea is that "government" – local, state or federal – will grab some new level of power over guns, gun sales, ownership, training, licensing, whatever... and keep us all safe from the baddies. Because... well, tight gun laws have worked so well in places like Chicago, Baltimore, Washington, D.C. and more. Right? Oh, wait...

Here's the bottom line in it all...

Over many years, more and more mentally ill people have been committing more and more horrific acts, and we are all on the trajectory to hold fewer freedoms. Even if you've never owned or fired a gun in your life; you are going to come out of all this less free.

Some guy goes off the deep end and shoots a group of innocents. Now, we're all walking through the airport under the watchful eyeballs of cops, holding their guns at the ready.

So yes, this week I pause and weep for the fallen. What happened in El Paso and Dayton breaks my heart and burns my soul.

I don't know anyone who is directly affected by El Paso or Dayton; not that I'm aware, anyhow. But I get the pain and emptiness of survivors; the sense of bottomless loss. There's no such thing as "get over it," as the glib saying goes.

If you're lucky, after you lose someone you learn to live with what happened; as in, you wake up each day and go about life. It's like having a deep scar, if not a missing limb. Losing someone to random violence is a cross that people forever carry up a long hill, where the top keeps on receding.

And as for the rest of us? We're all touched as well... Because government power, oversight, surveillance and control is about to increase. It's another great loss, about which you might want to weep.

On that point, I rest my case.

Thank you for subscribing and reading...

Best wishes,
Byron King
