10 Critical Elements of a Successful Business

By Megan Tough

The rules that a successful business operate by today are very different from the rules of 20 to 30 years ago. The widespread use of technology has dramatically cut response times and elevated customer expectations of service. Competitive advantage is the catch cry, but most business owners struggle to articulate what their point of difference is. The statistics are
well known: a staggering 40% of all new businesses fail within the first 12 months. Within 5 years, more than 80% will have failed. And yet, people are flocking to start up new businesses in ever increasing numbers.
What is it then, that sets apart the successful businesses from the unsuccessful ones? Here are my top ten tips for creating and maintaining a successful business. As you read, think to yourself - how does my business stack up?

1. Successful businesses have repeatable, scalable systems.
The processes in the business are clear, usually documented and followed religiously by all. This ensures the customer gets the same experience, every time they deal with the company.

2. They don't depend on one person.
If all the knowledge and skill resides in one person's hands or head, then the business is in serious trouble when that person wants to take a holiday, has to go to hospital, breaks an arm or leg etc.

3. Successful businesses can articulate what makes them different from others in their field.
Businesses that can do this run the risk of competing on price alone, a war that nobody wins (except the customer)

4. They always add value to the customer's experience.
The customer perceives that value has been added either through service, product features, distribution etc. The customer's perception is what's important - find out what's of value to them

5. Use strategies that recognize and reward their employees.
Reward and incentive programs should be based on performance, not just years of service or other demographic criteria. Employees are human; they respond to recognition - both financial and non-financial

6. Most successful businesses have a powerful vision.
They dream and think big, then they share it with their employees to create a uniting purpose

7. Planning - short term, long term, medium term.
There's no escaping it - working out where you want to go and planning to get there, will set you apart from the great majority of businesses that don't perform this activity well. Doing a plan at business start-up stage and never looking at it again doesn't really count as planning either. Plans should be reviewed at least twice per year, and done properly, can be your most powerful business tool

8. Product innovation - re-create or die.
The world moves on, people's needs change, and so must your products or services. If you don't offer it, no doubt your competitors will. Take time out to develop one or two new offers - road test them with your customers.

9. Surround themselves with the right support.
Successful business owners know what their skills are. They also know exactly what skills they don't have (and probably will never have). They employ or rent the expertise they don't have - after all, it's impossible to be an expert at everything

10. Have an exit strategy
Most people don't plan to be in their business until they reach the end of their lives, but
most people fail to plan how they will exit their business. Successful business owners know this before they start, and this drives the actions and decisions they make during the life of their business.

Business Start-up Strategy

Business Start-up Strategy by Greg Balanko-Dickson
July 20, 2004

I strongly suggest that would-be entrepreneurs do a business plan. As a result of completing the plan you will be much better prepared and know whether or not your business idea is feasible. Try the following article for a short-cut. However, I caution you on following a short-cut unless you have substantial experience or knowledge about your area. Proceed with caution without a business plan!

Six-Step Business-Start-Up Strategy
by Greg Balanko-Dickson
http://www.sbishere.com/article.html/547/

How is your business unique, and why will your goods or services appeal to customers? What are the primary differences between your company and your competitors? What are the driving factors to choose your business over another?
In other words, what is the underlying reason a customer would do business with your company?

1) Define Your Business & Vision
Defining your vision is important. It will become the driving force of your business. Here are questions that will help you clarify your vision:
Who is the customer?
What business are you in?
What do you sell (product/service)?
What is your plan for growth?
What is your primary competitive advantage?

2) Write Down Your Goals
Create a list of goals with a brief description of action items. If your business is a start up, you will want to put more effort into your short-term goals. Often a new business concept must go through a period of research and development before the outcome can be accurately predicted for longer time frames.
Create two sets of goals:
Short term: range from six to 12 months.
Long term: can be two to five years.
Explain, as specifically as possible, what you want to achieve. Start with your personal goals. Then list your business goals. Answer these questions:
As the owner of this business, what do you want to achieve?
How large or small do you want this business to be?
Do you want to include family in your business?
Staff: do you desire to provide employment, or perhaps, you have a strong opinion on not wanting to manage people.
Is there some cause that you want the business to address?
Describe the quality, quantity and/or service and customer satisfaction levels.
How would you describe your primary competitive advantage?
How do you see the business making a difference in the lives of your customers?

3) Understand Your Customer

It is not realistic to expect you can meet the needs of everyone, no business can. Choose your target market carefully. Overlook this area, and I guarantee you will be disappointed with the performance of your business. Get this right and you will be more than pleased with the results.
Needs: what unmet needs do your prospective customers have? How does your business meet those needs? It is usually something the customer does not have or a need that is not currently being met. Identify those unmet needs.
Wants: think of this as your customer's desire or wish. It can also be a deficiency.
Problems: remember people buy things to solve a specific problem. What problems does your product or service solve?
Perceptions: what are the negative and positive perceptions that customers have about you, your profession and its products or services? Identify both the negative and positive consequences.
You will be able to use what you learn when you start marketing and promoting your business.

4) Learn From Your Competition
You can learn a lot about your business and customers by looking at how your competitors do business. Here are some questions to help you learn from your competition and focus on your customer:
What do you know about your target market?
What competitors do you have?
How are competitors approaching the market?
What are the competitor's weaknesses and strengths?
How can you improve upon the competition's approach?
What are the lifestyles, demographics and psychographics of your ideal customer?

5) Financial Matters
How will you make money? What is your break-even point? How much profit potential does your business have? Take the time to invest in preparing financial projections.
These projections should take into account the collection period for your accounts receivables (outstanding customer accounts) as well as the payment terms for your suppliers. For example, you may pay your bills in 30 days, but have to wait 45-60 days to get paid from your customers.
A cash flow projection will show you how much working capital you will need during those "gaps" in your cash position.
We now offer a really neat, FREE, tool to help you do an initial financial analysis of your business called the Seven Step Starting Costs Wizard. This tool is not designed to replace detailed projections for cash flow and financial statements. However, this is a handy tool to test your assumptions and determine your break-even point and the validity of your plan. It produces a report and charts seven key areas:
Start up Investment
Assumptions
Running Monthly Overhead
Streamlined Sales Forecast
Cumulative Cash Chart
Break-even Charts
Conclusion
Identify Your Marketing Strategy
There are four steps to creating a marketing strategy for your business:
Identify All Target Markets: define WHO is your ideal customer or target market. Most companies experience 80% of their business from 20% of their customers. It makes sense then to direct your time and energy toward those customers who are most important.
Qualify the Best Target Markets: the purpose of this step is to further qualify and determine which customer profile meets the best odds of success. The strategy is to position your business at the same level as the majority of the buyers you are targeting. It is critical to figure out who your best customers are and how to best position your company in the marketplace.
Identify Tools, Strategies and Methods: a market you cannot access is a market you cannot serve. Marketing is the process of finding, communicating and educating your primary market about your products and services. Choose a combination of tools and strategies, that when combined, increase your odds of success.
Test Marketing Strategy and Tools: the assumptions we do not verify are typically the ones that have the potential to create business problems. Take the time to test all business assumptions, especially when you are making major expenditures.

Untold Pinoy Story No. 3

Her Motherââ,¬â,,¢s Joy

Her mother has always been proud of her. Mighty proud. And rightly so.
In the spring of 1991, Julia Roberts graced the cover of People Magazineââ,¬â,,¢s special issue featuring its annual list of The 50 Most Beautiful People in the World. Together with Julia Roberts in this ultimate list of the most beautiful people were Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Madonna, Mel Gibson, Whitney Houston, Michelle Pfeiffer, Isabella Rossellini, supermodels Claudia Schiffer & Naomi Campbell and oopsââ,¬Â¦a Filipina?
Yes, People Magazineââ,¬â,,¢s 1991 list of The 50 Most Beautiful People in the World included a true-blooded Filipina who was born, raised and educated in the Philippines .
Unlike most beautiful Filipinas who were the products of mixed marriages and who have therefore acquired foreign physical features, this Filipina was born to a Filipina mother and a Filipino father. It is no wonder that she does not typify a beautiful woman by any standard: She is short, standing only 5ââ,¬â,,¢2ââ,¬Â. She has a huge and deep acne scar on her forehead. She has that distinct Asian nose (read: flat). She uses only Avon cosmetics (gasp!) and applies makeup by herself. During her pre-Inno Sotto days, her clothes were not made by known couturiers: They were lovingly sewn at home by her mother who is a dressmaker. She does not even have the right genes to inherit beauty from: Her mother was plain, even stern-looking. Her father was a dark-skinned guy with the tough facial features of a hardened military man.
Although both the first names of her mother and father means happy in two different languages, their union was not as joyous. Her mother and father were never married, making her and her only brother illegitimate children. In the mistress hierarchy, her mother was not even her fatherââ,¬â,,¢s second woman. Her father had a first mistress who ranked above her mother. She and her brother only belong to their fatherââ,¬â,,¢s third family. And yes, the gay club performer who once appeared on national television was indeed her half-brother. She couldnââ,¬â,,¢t therefore be faulted for not talking about her father. In contrast, too much has been known about her mother. Her mother was always visible, too visible for comfort.
Her mother gave her the name Carmen and raised her in a province north of Manila . However, when it was time for her to go to school, her overprotective mother brought her and her brother to Manila to give them the best education. Carmen studied in Preciosa Solivenââ,¬â,,¢s Operation Brotherhood Montessori in Greenhills where she emerged as the schoolââ,¬â,,¢s valedictorian. However, Carmenââ,¬â,,¢s academic rival protested the schoolââ,¬â,,¢s decision to award Carmen the schoolââ,¬â,,¢s highest honors, claiming that she had better grades than Carmen. Carmenââ,¬â,,¢s rival even revealed that the schoolââ,¬â,,¢s owner, Mrs. Soliven, was only fond of Carmen because she always performed in school programs which gave Carmen an edge in extra-curricular activities. But academically, Carmen reportedly did not really rise above her rival.
Lured into show business, Carmen became part of German Morenoââ,¬â,,¢s inane daily afternoon TV show, Thatââ,¬â,,¢s Entertainment, where she got paired with comedian and now Quezon City Vice Mayor Herbert ââ,¬Å"Bistekââ,¬Â Bautista. (Some say that Vice Mayor Bautista was so enamored with Carmen that he later refused to marry his partner despite their having a child.) As one of the countless stars of Kuya Germââ,¬â,,¢s Thatââ,¬â,,¢s Entertainment, Carmenââ,¬â,,¢s talent was overshadowed by the ridiculous mass appeal of the triumvirate of Sheryl Cruz, Manilyn Reynes and Tina Paner.
Later, Carmen made a couple of forgettable films which were big flops. Unsuccessful in local show business, Carmen enrolled as a BS Biology student in Ateneo de Manila, hoping to become a doctor. However, the lure of fame and fortune shattered her medical ambition. She followed her other dream and landed inââ,¬Â¦Dreamland! Yes, instead of comforting innocent and fresh-smelling babies in a hospital, she ended up entertaining horny, sweaty and foul-smelling drunken men in seedy bars.
When Carmen was a little girl, a local manghuhula predicted that she would be crowned Miss Universe. Her mother, legally known as Miss Imutan, was ecstatic upon hearing this. Sadly, the prophecy did not come true. However, when Carmen was 18 years old, she bagged a beauty title. But it was farfetched from a Miss Universe crown. Carmen became Miss Saigon.
Yes, the only true-blooded Filipina who was included in People Magazineââ,¬â,,¢s The 50 Most Beautiful People in the World in 1991 is Feliciano Salonga and Ligaya ââ,¬Å"Joyââ,¬Â Imutanââ,¬â,,¢s only daughter: Carmen Lea Imutan Salonga.
Most of us know her simply as Lea Salonga.
And most of you know about her amazing journey to West End and Broadway

It Could Happen Only in the Movies

These two women move in different circles but they seem to lead parallel lives.
Barbara C. Gonzales is the great-granddaughter of national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal. Her great-grandmother is Dr. Jose Rizalââ,¬â,,¢s elder sister, Maria, a liberated woman who was separated from her husband Daniel. Barbara is more popularly known by her nickname, Tweetums. She once appeared in a Del Monte tomato sauce TV commercial featuring three generations of women in the kitchen. Yes, that was Tweetums with her daughter, Panjee, and Tweetumââ,¬â,,¢s mother whom they fondly called Mamu. Tweetums was married to Ramon Tapales, a successful businessman. Their daughter, Panjee Tapales (a.k.a. singer Panjee Gonzales), was co-host of ABS-CBNââ,¬â,,¢s daily morning show, Alas Singko Y Media (now Magandang Umaga Pilipinas) and its defunct Sunday morning game show with Roderick Paulate and Eric Quizon. Panjee soon became the second wife of ABS-CBN chairman, Gabby Lopez. (But thatââ,¬â,,¢s another story.) Tweetums writes about art and culture in her column for the Philippine Star. She has published a couple of books consisting of collections of her essays from her newspaper column. She remains a highly-respected media personality, being the president of a major advertising company.
Socorro Alicia R. Quirino is the granddaughter of former president Elpidio Quirino. More popularly known by her nickname, Cory, she hosts a lifestyle show on TV. Her kidnapping ordeal a few years ago was made into a movie entitled, The Cory Quirino Kidnap, which was directed by massacre king Carlo J. Caparas. Cory was married to Roman Cruz, Jr. who was the president of Philippine Airlines and head of Government Service Insurance System (GSIS). Cory writes a regular column on fitness and health for the Philippine Daily Inquirer. She also published a series of health, beauty and inspirational books. She remains a highly visible media personality with her radio and TV programs.
While Tweetums and Cory were both successful in their respective careers, their personal lives were not as rosy. Tweetums Gonzales and her husband, Ramon Tapales, eventually decided to lead separate lives. Likewise, Cory Quirino and her husband, Roman Cruz, Jr., soon parted ways.
Indeed, Tweetums and Cory seem to lead parallel lives.
Then, in a strange twist of fate, the unthinkable happened. . While geometry teaches us that parallel lines can never intersect, the parallel lives of Tweetums and Cory did intersect.
Tweetums Gonzales got married to Coryââ,¬â,,¢s former husband, Roman Cruz, Jr. Meanwhile, Cory Quirino got married to Tweetumââ,¬â,,¢s former husband, Ramon Tapales.
Just like in the movies.
And you know the rest of their story.

Beyond Sibling Rivalry

If your siblings are married to huge celebrities and you've just lost your chance of marrying one, would you still strive to surpass their feat?
But how could you beat being married to an award-winning actress whose mother is a beautiful actress and whose father is the original Agent X-44 of Philipine movies?
Or being the wife of Mr. Pure Energy?
Or being Mr. Megastar?
Now, arenââ,¬â,,¢t you glad that you're not among the Pangilinan siblings?
Former Penthouse Live co-host and newspaper columnist Anthony Pangilinan married Maricel Laxa, an excellent actress who is the lovechild of circa 60s actress Imelda Ilanan and action star Tony Ferrer. She is also the half-sister of 1990 Miss Asia runner-up Mutya Crisostomo Laxa.
Anthonyââ,¬â,,¢s brother, Senator Francis Pangilinan, was a campus figure in UP Diliman. He was the chairman of the UP Student Council in 1986. He married no less than the megastar, Sharon Cuneta.
Their sister, Angeli Pangilinan, was a campus beauty and brain while she was a student at the UP School of Economics in Diliman. Angeli married Mr. Pure Energy himself, Gary Valenciano.
REWIND: In the early 80s, teenager Edgardo José Martìn Santiago Valenciano or Gary V. to most of us, fell deeply in love with a teenage girl who eventually became his girlfriend. Gary ââ,¬â,,¢s true love, they said. And they really looked perfect together. Their friends said that they were truly meant for each other. They were the picture of pure bliss. But not for long.
Few weeks before Gary ââ,¬â,,¢s first major concert in 1984, a female singer became pregnant. And Gary was the alleged father. Gary did not deny it. At 19, Gary joined the growing list of unwed teenage fathers.
Gary ââ,¬â,,¢s former girlfriend was shocked upon hearing about Gary ââ,¬â,,¢s indiscretion. She felt betrayed by Gary and the female singer. Gary ââ,¬â,,¢s former girlfriend was devastated.
The pregnant singer who bore Gary ââ,¬â,,¢s child was a former Camay girl who joined the ultra exclusive league of several generations of Camay beauties from the first Camay girl Paquita Roces to her two daughters, Maritess Revilla (Ang lahat ay napapalingonââ,¬Â¦ At muling napapalingon) and Rosie Revilla to actress Rosa Rosalââ,¬â,,¢s daughter Toni Rose Gayda (Kutis porcelana) to concert pianist Ingrid Sala Santamariaââ,¬â,,¢s daughter Crispy Santamaria to a few others. The female singer indeed looked devastatingly beautiful in her memorable Camay TV commercial. But there was a teeny weeny objection among his friends: She was too old for the teenage and vibrant Gary whose popularity was just beginning to zoom up.
Everybody knows that the female singer who became pregnant with Gary ââ,¬â,,¢s child was Marìa Anna Elizabeth Nepomuceno Pangilinan. In 1985, Gary exchanged vows with the female singer who is more popularly known by her nickname: Angeli.
Angeli retired from her singing group, Music and Magic. Angeli sacrificed her flourishing singing career and left behind her fellow Music and Magic members led by jeepney driverââ,¬â,,¢s daughter-turned-nurse-turned-singer Kuh Ledesma, tenor singer-turned-Music and Magic co-founder-turned-musical director Jet Montelibano and singer-turned-comedian-turned TNT-turned-bogus political asylum seeker-turned-Michael Garfinkel endorser Fe de los Reyes. Angeli decided to become a full-time wife to Gary, baby Paoloââ,¬â,,¢s Mom and Garyââ,¬â,,¢s talent manager.
Meanwhile, the pain of losing Gary has left Gary ââ,¬â,,¢s former girlfriend in deep shock. Gary and his new bride tried to comfort her but Gary ââ,¬â,,¢s former girlfriend was inconsolable.
PLAY: Gary Valencianoââ,¬â,,¢s most inspired and most popular composition was first heard as the theme song of a Vilma Santos movie before it became the title of an Aga Muhlach-Lea Salonga flick and later, the title of a Kim Chiu-Gerald Anderson TV soap opera. The haunting melody and melancholy lyrics of this beautiful song make one wonder where Gary drew the passion and longing for lost love which every line of this song clearly evokes.

Listen:
Sana maulit muli
Ang mga oras nating nakaraan
Bakit nagkaganito
Naglaho na ba ang pag-ibig mo?
Sana'y maulit muli
Sana bigyan pansin ang himig ko
Kahapon, bukas, ngayon

This song was originally written by Gary in English. Ironically, the one who translated it to Tagalog was Gary ââ,¬â,,¢s wife, Angeli.

FAST FORWARD: Now, Gary has three grown-up children with Angeli. On the other hand, Gary ââ,¬â,,¢s former girlfriend is now known as Mrs. Buizon. She occasionally hosts a show on TV.
The pain has eased. Somehow. Even if the former lovers get to see each other regularly. They meet at her Momââ,¬â,,¢s house during important occasions: Christmas. New Year. Birthday of Mrs. Buizonââ,¬â,,¢s mother. Mrs. Buizonââ,¬â,,¢s birthday. Gary ââ,¬â,,¢s birthday. Holidays. Easter Sunday. Every Sunday, in fact.
Gary ââ,¬â,,¢s equally famous in-laws were witnesses to the former loversââ,¬â,,¢ meetings. But they do not mind at all.
Gary ââ,¬â,,¢s wife, Angeli, does not make a fuss over it.
Even the family matriarch, retired public school teacher Mommy Emma, is not bothered by it.
But the truth is, they could not prevent the former lovers from seeing each other.
Because Gary ââ,¬â,,¢s former girlfriend has to join her mother, siblings and in-laws during important family occasions.
And because Gary ââ,¬â,,¢s former girlfriend was Felichi Buizon.
And because before she got married, Gary ââ,¬â,,¢s former girlfriend was known as Felichi Pangilinan.
And yes, because Felichi Pangilinan-Buizon is the younger sister of Angeli Pangilinan-Valenciano.
And none of us would probably ever know the rest of this intriguing triangleââ,¬â,,¢s story.

Subject: A Korean Student's Essay on the Philippines

My Short Essay about the Philippines
Jaeyoun Kim
September 2003

Filipinos always complain about the corruption in the Philippines. Do you really think the corruption is the problem of the Philippines? I do not think so. I strongly believe that the problem is the lack of love for the Philippines.

Let me first talk about my country, Korea. It might help you understand my point. After the Korean War, South Korea was one of the poorest
countries in the world. Koreans had to start from scratch because entire country was destroyed completely after the Korean War, and we had no
natural resources.

Koreans used to talk about the Philippines, for Filipinos were very rich in Asia. We envy Filipinos. Koreans really wanted to be well off like Filipinos. Many Koreans died of famine. My father's brother also died because of famine.

Korean government was awfully corrupt and is still very corrupt beyond your imagination, but Korea was able to develop dramatically because
Koreans really did their best for the common good with their heart burning with patriotism. Koreans did not work just for themselves but also for their neighborhood and country. Education inspired young men with the spirit of patriotism.

40 years ago, President Park took over the government to reform Korea. He tried to borrow money from other countries, but it was not possible to get a loan and attract a foreign investment because the economy situation of South Korea was so bad. Korea had only three factories. So, President Park sent many mine workers and nurses to Germany so that they could send money to Korea to build a factory. They had to go through a horrible experience. In 1964, President Park visited Germany to borrow money. Hundred of Koreans in Germany came to the airport to welcome him and cried there as they saw the President Park. They asked to him, "President, when can we be well off?" That was the only question everyone asked to him. President Park cried with them and promised them that Korea would be well off if everyone works hard for Korea, and the President of Germany got the strong impression on them and lent money to Korea. So, President Park was able to build many factories in Korea.

He always asked Koreans to love their country from their heart. Many Korean scientists and engineers in the USA came back to Korea to help
developing country because they wanted their country to be well off.

Though they received very small salary, they did their best for Korea. They always hoped that their children would live in well off country.

My parents always brought me to the places where poor and physically handicapped people live. They wanted me to understand their life and help them. I also worked for Catholic Church when I was in the army. The only thing I learned from Catholic Church was that we have to love our neighborhood. And I have loved my neighborhood.

Have you cried for the Philippines? I have cried for my country several times. I also cried for the Philippines because of so many poor people.
I have been to the New Bilibid prison. What made me sad in the prison were the prisoners who do not have any love for their country. They go
to mass and work for Church. They pray everyday. However, they do not love the Philippines. I talked to two prisoners at the maximum security
compound, and both of them said that they would leave the Philippines right after they are released from the prison. They said that they would start a new life in other countries and never come back to the Philippines.

Many Koreans have a great love for Korea so that we were able to share our wealth with our neighborhood. The owners of factory and company were distributed their profit to their employees fairly so that employees could buy what they needed and saved money for the future and their
children.

When I was in Korea, I had a very strong faith and wanted to be a priest. However, when I came to the Philippines, I completely lost my
faith. I was very confused when I saw many unbelievable situations in the Philippines. Street kids always make me sad, and I see them
everyday. The Philippines is the only Catholic country in Asia, but there are too many poor people here. People go to church every Sunday to
pray, but nothing has been changed. My parents came to the Philippines last week and saw this situation. They told me that Korea was much
poorer than the present Philippines when they were young. They are so sorry that there so many beggars and street kids. When we went to
Pasangjan, I forced my parents to take a boat because it would fun. However, they were not happy after taking a boat. They said that they
would not take the boat again because they were sympathized the boat men, for the boat men were very poor and had a small frame. Most of people just took a boat and enjoyed it. But my parents did not enjoy it because of love for them.

My mother who has been working for Catholic Church since I was very young told me that if we just go to mass without changing ourselves, we
are not Catholic indeed. Faith should come with action. She added that I have to love Filipinos and do good things for them because all of us are
same and have received a great love from God.

I want Filipinos love their neighborhood and country as much as they love God so that the Philippines will be well off. I am sure that love
is the keyword which Filipinos should remember. We cannot change the sinful structure at once. It should start from person. Love must start
in everybody in a small scale and have to grow. A lot of things happen if we open up to love. Let's put away our prejudices and look at our worries with our new eyes. I discover that every person is worthy to be loved. Trust in love, because it makes changes possible. Love changes you and me. It changes people, contexts and relationships. It changes the world.

Please love your neighborhood and country. Jesus Christ said that whatever we do to others we do to Him. In the Philippines, there is God
who are abused and abandoned. There is God who is crying for love. If you have a child, teach them how to love the Philippines. Teach them why they have to love their neighborhood and country.

You already know that God also will be very happy if you love others. That's all I really want to ask you Filipinos.

500,000 Filipino mail-order brides worry Villar --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

500,000 Filipino mail-order brides worry Villar

Websites promoting marital match to be probed too

By Veronica Uy
INQUIRER.net
Last updated 04:20pm (Mla time) 08/31/2007

MANILA, Philippines -- Despite a law banning mail-order marriages about 300,000 to half a million Filipino mail-order brides continue to leave the country each year and Senate President Manuel Villar wants this investigated.

In Senate Resolution 101, Villar urged the Senate committee youth, women, and family relations to “inquire into the plight of these women and [into] the brazen violation of corresponding laws…with the end view of charting remedial measures to protect the dignity of Filipinas.”

He worried that criminal syndicates are behind mail-order bride operations.

The figures on the number of mail-order brides, said Villar’s staff, came from the women’s organization Gabriela.

Villar, whose election campaign last May banked partly on a pro-woman stance, also noted the proliferation of websites promoting mail-order matches, citing three sites as an example.

It said the first website advertises itself as a “world-class service for a 10th of a century [that] has been in business to introduce girls from the Philippines who would like to correspond, meet, and marry Western men through which Filipino women can be instantly ordered,” subject to a $5 processing fee.

The second website advertises “mail-order brides, pen pal girls exclusively from the Philippines, lovely Filipina ladies wishing to correspond and meet foreign gentlemen for romance and possible marriage.”

The third site boasts: “Philippine women from Luzon have masters degrees.”

Villar said Republic Act 6955 of 1990 “declare(s) as unlawful the practice of matching Filipino women for marriage to foreign nationals on a mail order basis and other similar practices, including the advertisement, publication, printing or distribution of brochures, fliers, and other propaganda materials in furtherance thereof and providing penalty therefore.”

“The government must implement the law prohibiting the violation of Filipino women, and should look after distressed Filipinas who have suffered abuses in the hands of foreign spouses,” he stressed.

Various non-government organizations working with women and migrant Filipinos note that many Filipino mail-order brides become prostitutes, are raped or abused.

Believe it or not--the church's teachings dont really play a key role--its more on economics than on religious. Afterall, the PHilippines is not an industrialized/westernized country. Read the comment I posted above--hope that helps.

I mean, I'd like to try to solve this by making specific inferences; you say that the Catholic Church's teachings is the causatory agent; however, have you seen and compared the birth rates of the Philippines to neighbouring countries?

+++++++++

Note that most of these countries have a populatory growth rate of over 1.5%, and these countries are muslim countries, buddhist, Hindu etc--which correlates to the Malthusian concept and strengthens that the Church's teachings has nothing to do with population growth in a thirld world/ developing country--instead it is pure and simple economics that makes these influences. Population growth rate is directly linked to the human development index of a country. As a country is industrializing--its population will be high to fuel industrialization--and is a country summits industrialization and becomes a 'modern' state--so too will its population as there will be no need to maintain such a high population. (As mentioned in prior posts)

If you read history, particularly in Europe--you will see this trend. During the late 19th century during the Age of European Imperialism--and during the age of European Industrialization--countries such as Great Britain, Germany, France, Spain etc created empires to fuel its industries at home--and the population in these countries swelled to the millions--thereby providing man power to build steel plants, trains, mills, ships, homes etc. As Europe (western europe to be exact) finished its industrialization process--and the standard of livign increased--leading to decreased child mortality rates---there no longer was a need to have so many xxxx children--as the economy wasn't so dependent on agrarian market--whereas it was now focused on inter-regional/ intercontinental trade, business and bankings e tc.

We see this now in economics and politics in South East Asia and Asia-Pacific--as countries in our region are industrializing---so too is the population to fuel and aid in the process---and so long as the country remains highly dependent on agrarian market--then the population growth rate will continue to at the stagnant 1.5%. WHEN the Philippines changes and becomes a service-focused market economy---then we will see a negative effect on our population growth--and it will decrease.

We see this in S. Korea, Japan, China, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia. (All of which had HIGH populatory growth rates when they were industrializing/developing)

This scattergraph shows that a country with a high infant mortality (many children dieing young) will tend to have a higher birth rate.

Index surges 111 pts on strong economic growth
Friday, August 31, 2007
The Philippine Daily Inquirer

Share prices closed 3.4 percent higher yesterday after the government reported its best quarterly economic growth numbers in two decades, dealers said.

The composite index added 110.81 points to 3,320.34, just off the day’s high of 3,321.85. It was the index’s best closing level since May 7.

The broader all-share index rose 64.71 points to 2,110.

Gainers led losers 119 to 11, while 34 stocks were unchanged. A total of 2.1 billion shares worth P4.2 billion were traded.

“The market’s steep turnaround was due to the robust growth of the economy which surprised the market, and the recovery on Wall Street,” said Ron Rodrigo of Unicapital Securities.

The gross domestic product (GDP) rose 7.5 percent from the previous year in the three months to June, boosted by the strong performance of the services sector and increased industrial output.

Officials said the full-year growth target of between 6.1 and 6.7 percent was now within reach, with a good chance that GDP growth may reach the seven-percent levels for the whole of 2007.

Rodrigo said that despite the strong growth, investors will continue to trade cautiously given the continued volatility in global financial markets.

“The local market’s fundamentals are solid, but financial markets are moving as one,” he added.

The Dow industrials rose almost 250 points on Wednesday, recovering most of its over 280-point loss on Tuesday.

Analysts said the growth momentum of the domestic economy may be difficult to be sustained in the remaining months, especially if there is a major fallout from the US subprime and credit problems.

“It would be hard to imagine the third quarter performing as well as the second quarter given the damage in the US consumer confidence. The credit problems are far from over,” said Jose Vistan of AB Capital Securities.

The government need to boost spending on infrastructure improvement if it is to achieve its full-year growth forecast, said Frances Cheung, an economist at Standard Chartered Bank in Hong Kong.

“Domestic investment is still weak that’s why government should spend more on infrastructure. This will also mitigate risks on the exports sector which may weaken if there is an economic slowdown in the US,” said Cheung. â€" AFP

RP can learn from Vietnam
By Willy E. Arcilla
Inquirer
Last updated 06:49pm (Mla time) 08/19/2007

OUR COUNTRY can learn a great deal from Vietnam, particularly in how our neighboring Asean state successfully revitalized its moribund economy starting in 1986.

Since then, Vietnam powered ahead with an average annual growth of 8 percent to earn the accolades of the global business community.

At the same time, it reduced poverty incidence at home, thus achieving the seemingly elusive goal of sustainable economic growth and equitable income distribution.

'Doi Moi'
Faced with stagnant growth, a severe food shortage, fiscal deficits, soaring inflation and chronic trade imbalances, the Sixth National Congress of Vietnam's Communist Party, held in December 1986, initiated an overall economic renovation policy.

Popularly known as "Doi Moi", the policy was aimed at making the country self-sufficient in food production and improving the standard of living of the people.

The core of "Doi Moi" was to reduce state intervention in business and open the country to foreign investment.

The government removed subsidies to drive efficiency and liberalized prices. A Foreign Investment Code was adopted, and the banking system reformed.

In the agricultural sector, land reform gave usage rights, tenure and greater autonomy to farmers.

Trade was liberalized in 1991, allowing more public and private firms to participate in external trade as export and import markets were expanded beyond the former Soviet Union and East European nations, Vietnam's traditional trading partners.

As a result of these reforms, exports have grown at a robust and consistent average rate of over 20 percent annually.

For the first half of 2007, Vietnam's exports have further accelerated to 22 percent against the Philippines' 6.6 percent, which has slowed considerably partly due to the strengthening of the peso.

It is noteworthy that despite Vietnam's export surge, and improvements in its balance of trade and balance of payments, the Vietnam currency dong continues to depreciate which manifests the government's support for exporters.

Foreign investments
Since "Doi Moi," Vietnam's foreign direct investments (FDI) have reached an accumulated invested capital of $80 billion, according to Vietnam Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, who spoke at a Business Forum in the Manila Hotel during his first state visit here.

In 2006 alone, FDI reached $10 billion compared to our $2 billion. This year, Vietnam projects to attract as much as $25 billion compared to our target of $2.5 billion.

From January to May, the Philippines' FDI hit only $900 million, 60 percent below 2006's.

Vietnam's projected FDI for 2007 represents nearly 50 percent of the FDI expected of China, even as China's population is 16 times that of Vietnam's, which is a strong indicator of the potential that foreign investors see and their confidence in Asia's next tiger economy.

This "gold rush" of investments into Vietnam can be attributed to several factors.

In meetings and interviews with foreign businessmen doing business in Ho Chi Minh, University of Asia and the Pacific economist and an organizer for the First Philippine-Vietnam Mission scheduled in Ho Chi Minh City in end-August, Florence Mojica-Sevilla, observed that foreign investors praised the Vietnam government for creating a climate conducive for investments.

It is a climate characterized by political stability, peace and order, an openness to market-oriented reforms, generous fiscal incentives, low corporate tax rates, a competitive cost structure, and a young, well-educated, productive, and highly skilled workforce.

An observer commented, "One of the most apparent differences between the Philippines and Vietnam is that in our country, there continues to be an obsession in politics, celebrities and entertainment, while in Vietnam, everyone simply works hard and fast."

Income distribution
Vietnam's GINI Coefficient, (an economist's measure of income inequality where a value of 1 means only 1 person owns 100 percent of a country's income) is only at 0.40, an admirable feat considering that the country has been independent for only 30 years since defeating the United States in the Vietnam War.

In contrast, the Philippines, which claims to be one of Asia's oldest independent and democratic republics, hovers nearer to 0.50, even higher than some African nations.

At the bilateral Business Forum, Vietnam's Vice Minister of Trade and Industry Nguyen Tan Deng added that as part of "Doi Moi," the government had adopted a pro-poor policy by prioritizing on food production and support for farmers via land reform, training, financing and farm-to-market infrastructure linkages.

Professor Rolando Dy, formerly with the World Bank and now the Dean of Agribusiness in the University of Asia and the Pacific, confirmed that Vietnam has already achieved self-sufficiency in food production.

Today, Vietnam is poised to overtake Thailand as the world's largest exporter of rice.

It also exports a wide variety of agricultural and marine products such as coffee, green tea, black pepper, rubber, cashew nuts, catfish, seabass, and tiger prawns.

Vietnam's per capita income of $700 is expected to reach $1,200 by 2010, representing a compounded annual growth rate of plus 15 percent, whereas the per capita GDP of the Philippines remained virtually unchanged for the past 50 years at around $1,200.

It is admirable for Vietnam to project raising per capita GDP even as it increases its population base to 100 million people while some Philippine government planners seem to blame our country's population for poverty, instead of harnessing their productivity.

Undaunted by China
Many countries including the Philippines appear to have given up on competing with China, the super factory of the world, but Vietnam remained undaunted.

Today, its food processing industry has not only achieved global standards, but has started to successfully compete with China's.

This is true as well in durable consumer goods like footwear and garments.

And now that the US and other markets have been spooked by reports of adulterated Chinese products ranging from canned food and candy, seafood and pet food, toys and children's clothes, tires and bicycles, Vietnam's exporters will stand to benefit as an alternative source, while China remedies its quality control issues.

In the field of high-value electronics, Intel is not only building its $1-billion factory in Vietnam but also its own school to train and recruit Vietnamese to supply its staffing needs.

Business mission
But the Philippines can take advantage of Vietnam's growth.

It is for this reason that a Philippine-Vietnam Business Mission will be held in Ho Chi Minh City from Aug. 29 to Sept. 1, 2007.

It is being initiated jointly by the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Department of Trade and Industry, ZMG Signium Ward Howell Inc. and the University of Asia and the Pacific in conjunction with the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Vietnam Trade Office in the Philippines.

Gigi Zulueta, managing director of ZMG Signium Ward Howell Inc., explained that the objectives of the mission are primarily to: (1) explore opportunities for Philippine companies to set up trade relationships directly with Vietnamese partners in import/export as well as direct and financial investments between the two Asean states; (2) obtain a better understanding of the success of Vietnam's "Doi Moi" that was started in 1986 for possible adaptation in the Philippines; and (3) enhance bilateral relations between the two countries.

Clearly, indicators leave no doubt that Vietnam is well-positioned to become Asia's next tiger economy, and it is thus imperative for the Philippines to learn from and participate in Vietnam's success story.

I've heard an interview with the Chief Economist, Finance Secretary and of the Gov. of Central Bank that massive flow of dollars into our economy / country has bad impact....and they are aware of that... to be in their action plan is to balance the effects to the economy...

They should to avoid "bubble economy"..

Manpower Export in the Philippines are one of the big contributors of this success.

We the overseas Filipinos are expected to send back $14.7 billion in remittances to our ancestral homeland in 2007 which represents 13.5% of the country's GDP.

Fifth suspect found in Bohol
By Jovy S. Taghoy
Sun.Star Staff Reporter

THE main suspect in the P2.5-million heist of Peninsula Rural Bank (Penbank) last Aug. 21 in Mandaue City was arrested yesterday in Bohol by a four-man team from the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO).

Rodulfo Atega, 21, was arrested past 7 a.m. in his house in Poblacion, San Miguel, Bohol Province based on a warrant for robbery issued by Regional Trial Court Judge Fortunato de Gracia last Tuesday.

Atega’s capture was made less than 24 hours after the arrest of robbery group leader Casimero “Meloy” Atega and three other members identified as Cresencio “Bruts” Reguya, a former civilian military volunteer, Gilven Nuez and Sofronio Remoreras.

Garcia’s group was arrested after shooting it out with the security guards of Bank of Commerce in Tagbilaran City that they had just robbed last Tuesday.

Supt. Pablo Labra II, team leader of the four-man team sent by acting CCPO Director Patrocinio Comendador to implement the arrest warrant, said Atega did not resist arrest during the operation.

The team was aided by elements of the San Miguel Police Station.

The arrest warrant against Atega is not in relation with the Penbank robbery but for allegedly robbing trader Jimmy Montaño of P12,000 cash last Feb. 28, 2007 in Sambag 2, Cebu City.

A bail of P100,000 is recommended for Atega.

From San Miguel, Bohol, the police team took Atega to Cebu City yesterday afternoon on board an inter-island vessel.

Atega has been tagged in the robberies of Vic Enterprises in Mabolo last April 20, Public Savings Bank along N. Bacalso Ave. last June 29, and Ormoc Bank in Mandaue City last Dec. 13, 2006.

Comendador said, Atega was also named in a bank robbery in Dasmariñas, Cavite and a robbery in Sta. Cruz, Manila all in 2003; armored van robbery in Montalban, Rizal, kidnapping of one Ryan Yu in an exclusive school with a ransom money of P2.9 million and the P3-million heist of an armored van in Imus, Cavite all in 2005.

Atega, who was presented to reporters yesterday, denied involvement in any of the robberies implicating him as one of the perpetrators.

He also denied being a member of the Casimero Garcia Robbery Group. He, however, admitted knowing Garcia because the latter was his schoolmate in high school in San Miguel.

Atega said it was not him but his brother Harris, who was gunned down last January on Tormis St., Sambag 1, who belonged to the robbery group.

It was Garcia who informed him and his family about the killing of Harris, he said.

He has not gone to Cebu for a long time already.

Atega said he has several witnesses to support his assertion that he was in San Miguel, Bohol when the robberies in Metro Cebu took place.

Meanwhile, Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 Director Silverio Alarcio Jr. said merit or efficiency medals are expected to be given to operatives responsible for the arrest of the robbery group.

However, he advised his men to stay alert as crimes will still be committed. He said other group may exploit the situation and take the opportunity to victimize establishments.

“We will not bring our guards down,” Alarcio said.

He said the arrest of the robbery group only proves that vigilance of the community, support of the LGU and the police doing its job is effective against criminality.

Cebu Provincial Police Office Director Carmelo Valmoria, during the monthly Talakayan sa Isyung Pulis forum yesterday said the Garcia group is neutralized but some members remain unaccounted for.

Valmoria did not discount the possibility they will create another group.

Comendador, during the same forum, supported Valmoria’s stand.

“The important thing is the police will do their job,” he said. (JST)

GDP in Q2 rises by 7.5% from 5.5%, fastest in 2 decades

By Lira Dalangin-Fernandez
INQUIRER.net

(UPDATE) MANILA, Philippines -- Buoyed by remittances from Filipinos abroad, gross domestic product (GDP) and gross national product (GNP) rose by 7.5 percent and 8.3 percent, respectively, in the second quarter of 2007.

No less than President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo made the announcement Thursday during a briefing in Malacanang with her economic team hours before she was due to depart for Malaysia.

"As I leave for Malaysia to join other ASEAN leaders in the 50th anniversary of Malaysia's independence from British rule, I am elated that for the second quarter of this year, our gross domestic product or GDP rose by 7.5 percent and gross national product or GNP by 8.3 percent, bringing to 7.3 percent our economic growth in the first half of the year," she said in a statement.

"We bring this elation and pride to Malaysia, the third largest economy in the region, and second home to thousands of overseas Filipino workers. I will bring thanks and congratulations to the Filipinos in Malaysia for their contribution to our GNP growth," she said.

Arroyo said the 7.5 percent GDP growth this year from 5.5 percent in the same quarter last year was the "fastest growth in two decades."

In her presentation of the second quarter economic performance, Estrella Domingo, secretary general of the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB), attributed the GDP growth to the strong remittance and robust performance in trade, construction, manufacturing and sustained increase in household spending and investment in construction.

Arroyo stayed on to listen to the presentation.

The GDP growth came despite the holding of the senatorial election last May, which some business sectors predict would slow down growth.

Acting socioeconomic planning secretary Augusto Santos said the strong performance of the economy showed that macroeconomic reforms have been effective.

But he said much needs to be done to push for policies to boost business, modernize agriculture, strengthen small entrepreneurs, expand enterprise, and spend more for social services, especially for education and health.

General Topic / Re: Who is Francisco Dagohoy?
August 29, 2007, 09:02:18 PM

Francisco Dagohoy

Dagohoy's real name is Francisco Sendrijas. He is a native of Inabanga, Bohol. Historians believe that his alias was derived from a belief that he had an amulet or “anting-anting” in the Tagalog language and “dagon” on the Cebuano dialect, that protected him from being harmed by his enemies. The people believed that he possessed the charm of a gentle wind or “hoyohoy” in the Cebuano dialect that allowed him to jump from one hill to another and from one side of the river to the other. He was believed to have a clear vision inside dark caves and be invisible whenever and wherever he wants to. The Dagohoy surname was derived from his local alias “Dagon sa hoyohoy.”

He led the longest revolt against the Spaniards. His struggle against the Spaniards was provoked when his older brother named Sagarino, who was then working for the church authorities, was asked to accompany a fugitive from the mountains. Sagarino failed to return. His body was recovered by Dagohoy in the mountains after a few days. The priest, who was Sagarino’s employer, refused to give Dagohoy’s brother a proper burial because he did not receive the sacrament of extreme unction prior to his death.

Dagohoy vowed to exact revenge on his brother’s untimely death. He did not obey the forced labor law implemented during the Spanish period. He encouraged the people to fight for their rights, defeat oppression and walk to the path of freedom. He was able to convince about three thousand Boholanos to stand up for their rights. The three thousand or so freedom fighters went to the mountains and launched surprise attacks against the Spaniards.

They assaulted the garrisons and looted churches and in the process, Dagohoy fulfilled his promise and was able to exact revenge on the priest who refused to give his brother the proper burial rites.

The freedom fighters built a virtual ecosystem in the mountains. It could probably be the reason why they were able to sustain the revolutionary movement for so long. Other natives of Bohol contributed to the revolt in other ways, some supplied weapons, money and food.

The Spaniards were able to suppress the revolt in 1828. They flexed their muscle and sent a great number of troops to eliminate the rebels. The Spaniards hired other natives to increase the number of “pacifiers” and subdue the rebels for a shorter period of time.

Peso falls to 3-1/2-month low on credit woes

Last updated 01:01pm (Mla time) 08/29/2007

MANILA, Philippines -- The Philippine peso fell to its lowest level against the US dollar in three and a half months in morning trade Wednesday, as investors dumped risky assets on fresh worries about the US economy and credit markets.

The peso weakened to P46.99 against the dollar in morning deals after closing at P46.71 on Tuesday. That was the peso's lowest level since May 16 when it hit P47.02.

Traders said there is talk that the central bank sold dollars in the spot market to prevent the local currency from slipping into the P47-area.

The pair averaged P46.93 at the midday break.

"Risk aversion continues because of renewed credit concerns," a trader with a local commercial bank said.

Merrill Lynch on Tuesday downgraded ratings on Citigroup, Bear Stearns and Lehman Brothers, saying these institutions have the most exposure to the problems in credit markets, while a report that US consumer confidence fell to a 12-month low in August added to anxiety on Wall Street, dragging Asian markets on Wednesday.

If the Peso is at 56 against 1 dollar, people are mad and say the government is useless, doing nothing.

If the Peso is at 45 against 1 dollar, people are still mad because the exporters are affected and the prices of goods still continue to go up.
